Frank Merrill and Emma Jean (Winans) Sharier Sr. of West Lafayette, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 3, with an open house at their home 51596 TR 159 in West Lafayette. A family celebration will take place at 4 p.m.

The couple was married May 3, 1952, by the town clerk in Nogales,

Mexico. On May 3, 1975, the couple renewed their vows at The Holiness Church Scriptural in Newcomerstown, by the Rev. William A. Gamble.

Emma is the daughter of the late Brent Winans and Evelyn Ruby. She graduated from Burnsville High School in West Virginia. She retired in July 1994 from a custodian position in the Ridgewood School District.

Frank is the son of the late John and Elizabeth Sharier. He graduated from Norton Center High School in Norton. He is an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. The couple is members of VFW 2040 and its auxiliary, the Loyal Order of the Moose and the American Legion and its auxiliary.

They have six children, Elizabeth (William) Herrell of Zanesville; Raine (Richard) Hammond and Frank (Sandra) Sharier of West Lafayette; John (Robin) Sharier, Brent (Loretta) Sharier and Harold (Yolanda) Sharier, all of Coshocton. They also have 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, 14 step-greatgrandchildren, and 12 step-greatgreat grandchildren.

The local Connect Your Community headquarters is moving down the street.

“The building we are in now was sold and a restaurant is going to be put in here,” said Sue Shipitalo, compliance manger for the organization. “We are moving down to where Three Rivers Infusion was.”

The organization is currently in the process of closing up operations at its 509 Main St. location and plans to offer classes starting Monday, April 23, at its new home at 238 Main St. The federally funded computer program started in September 2010, and has served 4,500 people in 17 Ohio Appalachian counties. There are offices located in Coshocton, Zanesville and Cambridge. Locally 1,200 people have been served.

“We teach basic computer skills and all classes are free,” Shipitalo said. “We also help get you connected at home by helping you get a computer and Internet service. You have to take and complete the class.”

Connect Your Community can help qualifying individuals get refurbished laptops for $80 and desktops for $50. They also can get special deals through Best Buy. The class also focuses on virus protection and ways to prevent online identify theft.

“We also want to teach you to be able to

The classes are 15 to 20 hours long and can be set up and offered any place where there are at least 1015 interested in learning computer skills.

“We have a mobile lab that we bring and set up,” Shipitalo said. “Our main targets are people who don’t use computers or get on the Internet, but we will offer classes to special groups wanting to learn Excel or Word.”

Kate Wolford has taken the basic computer class twice.

“I needed to learn computer skills,” she said.

“Nowadays you almost have to have computer skills, but when I was in school they were not thought of.”

Wolford was impressed with the teachers and said she is now using her computer at home.

“I’m doing stuff for my church, things I enjoy and even sending e-mails,” she said. “This is convenient, ongoing and you can come back and get help.”

Martha McGrady was enjoying her first round of computer classes.

“Things are going real good and I’m learning a lot,” she said. “The teacher is wonderful. She is patient and helps us a lot, which is really nice.”

Donna Mason also was learning a lot from the class.

“I have 20 years of office experience, but my computer skills weren’t that great so I thought I would come here to learn more and hopefully help myself find a job,” she said. “Computers are so prevalent. You can’t get away from them.”

He was born Aug. 10, 1915 in Cambridge to the late McCormick A. and Edna M. (Blackstone) Davis. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in Europe.

While living in Ohio, he was employed as a mechanic and union welder. In December of 1965, he and his wife Rosella moved to Sedona, AZ, where he was employed as a mechanic and ranch foremen into the late 1980’s. He and his wife moved back to Ohio in December of 2009. He was a former member of the Ironworkers Local Union, Moose, NRA, and a former member of the Sedona Assembly of God Church, and Gospel Hill Ministry.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rosella (Leddy) Davis of Warsaw, who he married Feb. 8, 1940. Also surviving are two sons; Ron (Jeannette) Davis of Warsaw, and Carl (Joyce) Davis of Nellie, three grandchildren; Lori (Ed) Robinette of Warsaw, Rhonda (Craig) Ringwalt of Warsaw, and Doug (Dee) Davis of Columbus, nine great-grandchildren; Josh Young, Stephanie Spang, Matt Robinette, Jandi Young, Tiffany Spang, Taylor Spang, Rachel Robinette, Jordyn Ringwalt, and Samantha Ringwalt, and two great-great-grandchildren; Jada Simmons & Lachlan Van Dusen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and one great-great grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday April 18, 2012 at Gospel Hill Ministry, 27610 TR 45 Warsaw, with Pastor Ron Davis officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation is one hour prior to service time at the church.

Alzheimer’s program planned CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The Alzheimer’s Association and the nursing outreach of the Warsaw United Methodist Church will host “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Warsaw United Methodist Church, 130 E. Church St., in Warsaw.

Attendees will learn the basics of Alzheimer’s and how it may differ from other types of dementia or memory loss conditions.

Risk factors, diagnosis, stages and treatments also will be covered. A representative from Leech, Scherbel, Peddicord & Given, LTD also will be on hand to provide information on Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and Living Wills.

Alzheimer’s affects millions of people and the number is expected to grow. People once believed that the loss of memory was part of getting old. Scientists and physicians now agree that Alzheimer’s, not old age, is the major cause of progressive memory loss in people over 65.

Lida was a guest in the home of Catherine Miller who had met Lida at an Irkutsk, Russia Rotary meeting several years ago. This was her third visit to West Lafayette and she has always been a welcome visitor to the Lafayette Club. Not only did she participate as a client in the health fair, but she is taking ideas of the health fair back to Russia as a possible project for her home club in Irkutsk. Clary Gardens to celebrate Earth Day

Clary Gardens is hosting a Family Earth Day Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

Bring a snack to enjoy on the lawn while we share about the importance and meaning of Earth Day. Following this brief introduction join Kerry Rapp, garden director and Chris Campbell, event coordinator on a guided interactive hike titled “The History & Mystery of Trees.” Bring a clean, empty vegetable or juice can that will be turned into a recycled “make it-take it” pencil holder from items collected on the hike.

This event is open to children ages 3-12 and accompanying adults. Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing and should be able to walk ½ mile on the woodland trail. This is a free event but donations to Clary Gardens are appreciated. All donations will go toward the development of the

“Some of our current staff will play and we are trying to get players to come back that people will recognize,” Hemming said.

He knows other schools that have used the Harlem All-Stars as a fundraiser and been successful.

“It’s very family orientated just like the Globetrotters are,” Hemming said. “I think it will be fun.”

Funds raised for the event will be used to help the entire athletic department cover expenses and not just for a specific project.

“Our gate revenue was off a little bit this year and general expenses keep rising so it’s another way for us to make some money,” Hemming said.

April 19th, 1952 The Boy Scouts presented their third annual circus at the Coshocton High School with about 1,000 boys and leaders participating.

The Scouts gave an interesting presentation on three different aspects of history: Native American, pioneer, and Ohio history. Over 100 Scouts portrayed everyday Native life and performed 10 interpretive dances to drums under the direction of Chief Wilmar Cochran.

Early pioneer life was portrayed as troops paraded around the stage in costumes of early settlers with covered wagons. Early industry in Ohio was portrayed by Scouts dressed up as shoe cobblers, blacksmiths, butchers, carpenters, and handicraft workers.

For the past three years, the local fire departments and sheriff’s office have met head-on on the court for their annual Guns vs. Hoses game to benefit a person in the community. This year’s charity basketball game will be Saturday, April 21 at noon at Kids America to benefit Breanna “Breezy” Williams.

“We usually pick someone to benefit from the event that is going through some sort of hardship,” said Shannon Devore, event coordinator. “Three out of the last four years it has helped a cancer patient.”

Williams was diagnosed last September with stage four breast cancer which has now spread to her chest and lymph nodes.

April 18th, 1982 Coshocton’s High School boy’s tennis team won their invitational for the fifth year in a row. The boys rallied to beat the runner-up, Hilland on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Redskins earned the champion trophy and Coach Jeff Wortman was presented with a plaque. First place medals were awarded to Steve Stoker and Rob Outz and a runner-up medal was given to Craig Powell. Coshocton’s overall record so far that season was 7-3 and they were to host Cambridge that Tuesday.

April 22nd, 1972 The two-day Future Teachers of America Convention was held at River View High School, the first time ever to be conducted at a rural high school. During the event, River View junior, Marla Arthurs of Conesville received the surprise of her life when she was named Future Teachers of America State President for the 1972-73 school year. Other officers selected were from all over Ohio.

Delegates and members were housed by students and teachers from River View and advisors stayed in the Park Hotel.

Admission and concession stand items are cost by donation. In addition to the basketball game, there will be a 50/50 drawing and area businesses have donated a variety of items to be included in gift baskets to be raffled off.

“You don’t have to be there to win,” Devore said. “As long as all your information is on the back of the ticket, we will get a hold of you and arrange for you to get your prize. Door prize tickets also will be given as you come in and make a donation for your entry.”

“The community and local businesses really support our local cause,” said McKee. “As long as they continue to support us, we will continue to support somebody in the community. There’s no greater feeling than helping somebody.”

The halftime show will be provided by members of Jody’s Dance.

As far as bragging rights goes, the sheriff’s office claimed victory the first two years and the firefighters took the court last year and are confident that they will win again this year.

“It’ll be tied at the end of this year because we’re going to win this year,” said McKee. “The firemen really take it seriously,” Devore said. “They seem to have quite a bit of practices but the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t. It’s all in good fun. We don’t always get to see each other in this kind of light. It’s nice to get out there and play a little ball and see each other out there, but it also doesn’t hurt to win.”

For those who can’t attend the game but still want to help, donations can also be made at any Home Loan Savings Bank office.

“It’s a great thing to be a part of and it’s a great thing to watch,” said McKee. “It’s great to see how much a little bit can go a long way and letting her know that a whole community is behind her in her fight will be beneficial to her.”

Community Calendar Clean Up Day. Coshocton Clean Up Day will be Saturday, April 21 from 8:30 – 11 a.m. at the Court Square. The first 100 participants receive a free t-shirt.

Donuts, bottled water, safety vests, and garbage bags will be provided. Participants will receive assigned areas at registration. The Tire Collection Day will also be at the fairgrounds that day. For passenger tires, $2 will be paid, for rear-wheel tires, $25 will be paid, and for all sizes in between, $15 will be paid.

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. The featured band performs from 7 – 9 p.m. and acoustic jam follows from 9:15 – 11 p.m. The featured band for April 28 is Frosty Morning Bluegrass Band.

Yellow Flag Community Yard Sale. The sale will be Friday and Saturday, May 4-5. The signup deadline to be part of media maps is Wednesday, April 25, at Brother’s Hardware and Variety Store. Announcements Cemetery Clean-Up. The Union (Smith Hill) Cemetery Association in Bedford Township is ready for its annual spring cleanup. Anyone who wants to save grave blankets, wreaths or other miscellaneous items must remove them by Friday, April 20.

Checking Hydrants. The Coshocton Fire Department will be checking hydrants in the city, weather permitting, starting April 30. The duty shift will notify WTNS radio and the Tribune which area of the city they will be checking each day. The residents in the area being tested may experience some discoloration in their water. Just let the water run for a few minutes and it should clear up. The hydrants are tested each spring and fall to ensure that each hydrant works correctly.

Rent a Wrestler. The Ridgewood Rent-a-Wrestler Day will be April 28 starting at 8 a.m. Area residents can rent a wrestler for a maximum of two hours to do odd jobs around the house. A donation of at least $10 per wrestler is required. Please pay accordingly for job severity. Wrestlers will work in pairs and will do odd jobs such as clean up, help residents with hauling, loading, yard work, painting, lifting, organizing, etc.

Certain activities are restricted such as operating heavy machinery and all work must be done on site.

Wednesday, April 18, 25: Preschool Story Time: Coshocton Public Library: Children 3 - 5 years old are invited to Preschool Story Time every Wednesday from 10:30 - 11 a.m. Register by calling 622-0956.

This spring session will last for five weeks, with the Tea Party on April 25.

Wednesday, April 18: Teen Poetry Slam: Coshocton Public Library: Grades 7 - 12 are invited to celebrate National Poetry Month by participating in this Poetry Slam. Teens may enter in one of the following categories, or both. 1. Original Work- This category is for original poetry that has been written by the teen that has entered it and will be judged on writing only. Poems may be up to 30 lines. Only one entry in this category per teen. 2. Recited Work- This category is for a teen who is reading a poem written by a famous poet, a friend, a family member, etc, and will be judged strictly on the delivery/interpretation of poem. Only one entry in this category per teen.

Top Winner in each category will win a Tim Horton’s Gift card, journal and pen. Runner-up prizes will be awarded.

Thursday, April 19: Pizza and Pages--Children’s Book Club: Coshocton Public Library: Pizza and Pages--The Book Club for children in 4th, 5th, or 6th grades, will be in The Small Meeting Room each month during the school year except for December.

The book for April is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle. Contact Mrs. Custer at the library to register for this event. 4 - 5 p.m.

Thursday, April 19: W.L. B.E.S.T. Night @ the Branch (Teens): West Lafayette Branch Library: Books. Electronics. Snacks. Teens. It’s the best night for teens to be at the Branch. Grades 7 - 12 are invited to the Branch library for time on laptops, games on the PlayStation2, book talks, friends and snacks. Check your email or Facebook, play online games, catch up on homework, find a new read, and so much more. Space is limited. Must be registered.
