2008 The Coshocton County Beacon

The Coshocton County Career Center has entered into a partnership with the Knox County Career Center (KCCC) to offer adult education classes in Coshocton. Starting May 12, KCCC will be offering a series of introductory computer classes, including computer concepts, Windows XP, how to surf the web, keyboarding, Microsoft Word 2007 and Excel 2007.

The classes will be in the evenings at the Coshocton County Career Center, 23640 Airport Road.

Registrations are being accepted now by calling KCCC at 740-393-2933. There is a deadline for registration and payment must be received in advance.

Textbook is comprehensive and will be used for all computer classes. It only needs to be purchased once.

Dogwood festival off to a great start

Anne Cornell, director of the Pomerene Center for the Arts, said at Monday’s performance, “It is a gorgeous day! This is the 25th year of the Dogwood Festival. The Dogwood Festival is a community celebration of the performing and visual arts which is a really strong component of our community. People that move in to the community or come and visit are always surprised at how vital and dynamic our arts community is and this is something that we can be proud of.

It’s also an energy driver. There is some vitality down the line with our young people – this is really a “push forward” celebration”.

Despite inclement weather, over 80 people showed up at the Court Square last Saturday morning to help, and we know that there were many groups around the county doing their own projects too!

Of concern to the hospital is the increasing amount of charity care and uncompensated care being provided to the community. This amount was almost 10 million dollars in 2009, which Nowak attributes to the economic climate in the area and was a significant increase over 2008.

Following the meeting, Mr. Nowak responded to the question, “What is the biggest challenge facing the hospital in 2010?”, “I think it’s going to be for the people in our area to utilize the services that we have here. If people don’t utilize the services then they won’t have a hospital in the future. We’ve serviced the public in the past and I think we can continue doing that.

The secret is going to be offering the services needed, making the services more convenient and working with our doctors in the community to discover how we can better meet the needs of the residents. There are a lot of residents here due to the economy skipping treatment or waiting until the last minute, which is really sad.

We take care of the patients and we’re trying to do what is right for the patient”.

“As we head into our 101st year, it’s kind of exciting. Change during the first 100 years was fairly evenly paced. I think what we’re going to see during the second 100 years is a faster pace of change. Whether we want it to or not, it’s going to change”.

Nowak concluded, “We’re here to do what is right for the patients and people of Coshocton County”.

County Commissioner D. Curtis Lee, remarked, “It’s important to have a local hospital, someplace you can go for your needs, emergencies, especially when time is of the essence like a heart attack or stroke. It’s important to have something close by. It’s a big asset to our community. The hospital is involved in a lot of things and they are doing a lot of work they are not being paid for. They’re just a vital asset to our community”.

The Coshocton County Memorial Hospital celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2009 and hospital administrator, Greg Nowak, explained during the recent annual meeting that, “We have been through difficult times and it is remarkable when you think of all the things the hospital has been through in that one hundred years”.

Following opening remarks by Jason Bradford, Board of Trustees vice chairperson, Nowak explained that the annual meeting is, “A means of communicating what is happening at the hospital. You can never communicate enough”.

Highlights of 2009 include; utilizing 15 swing beds on the fourth floor of the hospital, celebrating 100 year anniversary, opening a new medical clinic in Warsaw, continuing to reduce operating expenses and adjusting to current economic conditions and working with the East Ohio Hospital Alliance to help reduce costs of services and also to increase the availability of new services.

Three new physicians were recruited to the community in 2009; Dr. Wendy Redmond, family medicine, Dr. Arthur Papadopol, family medicine, and Dr. William Schultz, family medicine. Dr. Redmond and Dr. Papadopol are practicing in the Pleasant Valley Medical Clinic while Dr. Schultz joined the Arrowhead Clinic.

Preliminary spring 2010 headcount enrollment at Central Ohio Technical College has reached a record of 4,591, an increase of 18.6 percent over spring 2009 and the highest enrollment in the college’s history. The figure includes students taking classes at the four COTC locations: Newark, Coshocton, Knox, and Pataskala, as well as online enrollment.

COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D., credits the exceptional growth to a combination of factors and COTC initiatives, including: Students taking online classes have increased more than 25 percent (1,522 this year versus.

May 5th, 1950 The McClelland and Kennard grocery store, located on Main St in West Lafayette, was ablaze with flames of fire. The fire, believed to have been caused by a defective compressor in a cooler, destroyed the interior of the store as well as all the stock. The residence part of the building was also severely damaged and Mr. and Mrs. Strasser’s furniture and other household items were completely lost. The owner, Walter C. Blind, said he could not give an estimate of loss at the time, although he expects it to be great. He said he is in debt to the West Lafayette and Coshocton firefighters for saving the exterior of the building.

The fire was believed to have started at 3:30 a.m. and spread quickly.

May 6th, 1960 Turn on the tube. The Coshocton Beta Sigma Phi sorority presented a television set to the residents of the county home. This is the second time the sorority has donated a television set to the home.

The proceeds from the sorority’s Sweetheart Ball were used to purchase the set. Mrs. Catt, president of the sorority, presented the set to superintendent and matron of the home, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reiss. Special guests for the event included county commissioner Floyd Stillebauer and his wife. The evening also consisted of entertainment including a vocal quartet, tap dancing, a jitterbug dance, games and refreshments.

River View track team placed second out of thirteen teams participating in the New Lexington Invitational meet. The Bears scored a total of 44.5 points, only 14.5 points behind the champion team, New Lexington. Art Sampsel even broke a school record at the meet as he scored 12’3” on the pole vault. He took first place in the event. The Bear’s shuttle hurdles relay team also broke a school record and took second in the event. All-in-all, the boys gave a fine performance and put up a fight for first place, but was awarded second place, which was nothing to be ashamed of. They were rewarded at the end for their efforts with a handsome runners-up trophy.

Mrs. Edna Voshall really understood the meaning of the word “volunteer”. She was recognized for her 50 years of volunteer service at the Coshocton Memorial Hospital during a volunteer luncheon.

Not only did she volunteer her services, but donated her musical talents as well by playing the piano for several occasions. Because of her many years of service, Mrs. Voshall received an award from Gov. James Rhodes at the Ohio State Fair in 1978. She said that volunteering has become a part of her life and that she has received so much more than she has given. In addition to volunteering, she was also a long-time member of many women’s clubs in Coshocton.

Need a reason to celebrate? Then come on down to the 3rd annual Black Bear Festival Celebration of Excellence on Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m.

– 2 p.m. at the River View High School.

The Black Bear Festival started when the school district received an Excellent rating from the state three years ago. That rating is still going strong and the staff wanted to show off their students and why their school is so great. Their goal is finding what each student excels in and display their works in the High School hallway.

They also try to display at least one piece per student and exhibit a wide variety of subjects.

“This is the kid’s opportunity to show off to the public what they’re best at and what makes us excellent,” said Amanda Meiser, committee member.

There’s something for the whole community at this event. Along with the Halls of Excellence where the student’s works will be shown, there will also be music provided by each music department, crafts, bingo, pony rides and a petting zoo from the River View FFA, a kid’s zone including five inflatable play houses which are set up and torn down by the high school football team, a donation dunk tank where students can pay a couple of bucks to dunk their teachers, administrators and community members, (all proceeds from the dunk tank will go to Relay for Life), face painting, model airplanes, snow cones, delicious sweets from the FCCLA and the Family and Consumer Science classes, (win at

Bingo and your prize is a delicious pastry), an information fair where non-profit area businesses can set up a booth with free information about their services, free popcorn, and don’t forget the 3rd annual car show.

The car show will feature both vintage and modern cars. A trophy will be awarded to Best of Show, cars and trucks that are pre- and post-1950. Registration will be from 11 a.m. – Noon and the event will be on the lawn in front of the River View High School.

Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 50 cars.

Something new this year will be the pancake fundraiser put on by the music departments and the music boosters. The music students are going to Disney to perform and are selling pancakes from 8 a.m. – Noon at the festival to help defer cost. Pancakes are $4 for adults and $2 for kids.

“Accomplishment is what this is all about,” said Renee Anderson, committee member, “and to be able to celebrate that with the community.”

This event is completely self-funded through sponsors and donations. Every year, a couple hundred teachers and students volunteer their time to make this event possible.

“It’s an opportunity for the kids to feel like they are a part of something and to give something back,” said Sheri Fortune, past committee member and volunteer.

The emergency squads in Coshocton County will be at the festival to show off their equipment. Med Flight will also be present for a demonstration. The Zemba Brothers are also bringing their equipment for the kids to play on under adult supervision.

A couple of weeks ago, the children at the Coshocton County Head Start released some balloons into the air as part of National Young Child’s Week in hopes that someone would find them and write back. Well, a few days later, a woman in West Virginia was outside and saw her horse playing with a balloon. She realized it had come a long way because it had a note attached to it from the Coshocton County Head Start. She immediately wrote back and the students received the letter only days after they released their balloons.

You can help stamp out hunger this Saturday, May 8, by donating nonperishable food items and placing them in a bag by your mailbox or, for rural routes, in your mailbox. The National Association of Letter Carriers will be collecting the food during their Saturday mail delivery. According to the www.nalc.org website, this is the 18th annual food drive and is the largest one day food drive in the nation. Carriers collected a record 73.4 million pounds of food in last year’s drive. Donations from this year’s drive are expected to push the overall total since the annual drive began 18 years ago to over 1 billion pounds. Help stamp out local hunger by supporting your postal carrier this Saturday, May 8th!

Those were the words spoken by Murray McMillen, one of the keynote speakers at the annual cancer Survivors banquet. The banquet was held at the Moose Lodge in Coshocton on Thursday evening, Apr. 29. The banquet is held annually so that cancer survivors and caregivers can join together to celebrate the support and for the community to show support for our cancer survivors. Over two hundred survivors and caregivers attended the event with a theme of, “Survivor Birthday Celebration”. Members of the Moose Lodge family center prepared a delicious meal which was served by the registered nurses association.

Lisa Murray, who coordinated the event, said, “The evening has been wonderful. The turnout has been excellent and the help has been great. My family here at the Moose, Don Freed, the kitchen manager, Lisa, everyone is just wonderful. Kim Gress, Emily Kobel and Laurie Stephan have been just great, my husband, the nurses here helping serve, and my family all here helping out. I appreciate them so much.” Murray added, “It’s important to have this to show cancer survivors how much we appreciate them. They can talk together, share some tips, the care and treatment they’re getting. Thank you so much to the community for helping – everyone has been wonderful!”

Murray McMillen, said, “I have survived.

McMillen said that he had his life planned out the way it was supposed to go. I had passed all of the tests I needed to (for Officer Candidate School) – I thought I was going to be an airplane pilot in the Air Force. I had my life planned out and God shut the door. Two years later, we went in to see the Preacher, we had been dating for about two years, and he said, “Murray, have you ever thought about being a Pastor?” There are times in our life when we just don’t understand what God is doing. But if we give him enough time, and we are patient with him, he’ll let us know. I’m standing here tonight because I was diagnosed with cancer”.

Special entertainment was provided by Barbara Moody, who sang, “The Climb”, Bill Moody, who played a song written just two weeks ago by Dan Mitchell, titled, “The Edge” and also later performed, “The Dance”.

An emotional Tina Johnson then spoke about her cancer ordeal with daughter Lauren, who was diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer that affects the retina at only six months of age. “I cried happy tears the first time I saw

Relay for Life

Powder Puff Football. River View is having its Annual Powder Puff Football Game to kick-off Black Bear Fest. The game will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday May 6 at the Don Rushing Football Stadium. This is a fundraiser for River View’s Relay for Life team, and is being put on by the High School Letterman’s Club.

This is the first of many activities taking place this weekend as part of Black Bear Fest going on May 8. We would like to invite the community to support this charity event!

Spaghetti Dinner. The Presbyterian Women of the Coshocton Presbyterian Church are sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on Friday, May 7 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the church. Tickets prices are $6 for adults, children 2-10 are $3 and under 2 is free. All proceeds will go to Lauren’s Team for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Coshocton. Lauren is a fourth grader at Conesville who was diagnosed at 6 months of age with retinoblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer that affects the retina.

Lauren has been cancer-free for eight years! Tickets are available from any Presbyterian woman, in the church office or at the door. Further information may be obtained by calling 622-0486.

Complete with a chorus and orchestra, the performance was directed by Deborah English with assistant directors Danie Casey and James Rose. A delicious dinner was available before the show on both evenings, giving members of the cast time to mingle with family members and friends prior to the show. Starring junior Kasi Karr as the precocious Laurey Skidmore and Colby Tarrh as cowboy Curly in the lead roles, the play also saw the acting and vocal talents of Autumn Appis, Austin Bible, Tricia Brown, Neal Fox, Kendall Meek, Nathan Shutt and Ethan “Peddler” Widder, among many other gifted students at River View. Each actor or actress was comfortable in their role, so much so that when I saw Ethan Widder on Sunday I half expected him to have that big bag of “merchandise” with him, the jaunty hat and pants about 6 inches too high! But he didn’t.

Senior Joel Hamric, who has been in the choir, said, “I’ve never done any acting on the stage before. It’s a lot of fun up there. It’s been a blast. I would encourage a lot of other students to try and do it. I’ve made a lot of friends”.

Sophomore Kendall Meek, who played the flirty Ado Annie, said laughingly, “All the guys like my character, the women don’t. I was kind of surprised to get a lead role, but also excited. It’s a lot of fun”.

Renowned musician and Coshocton Community Choir director, Mr. Charles R. Snyder, was named the 2010 winner of the Coshoctonian Award during the 28th annual Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce dinner on Friday evening, Apr. 30.

Following a dinner catered by the Coshocton Hospital dietary unit, Don Hutchins, President of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors gave the opening remarks and introduced Executive Director Carol Remington. Remington told the audience that, “The Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce is strong, vibrant and growing”. She also provided an update on Chamber activities and accomplishments during the past year. Robert and Renee Guilliams of Ravens Glenn Winery were given special recognition for providing the wine and glasses for the evening’s events and for being one of four businesses recognized by the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance. Ravens’ Glenn received the award of Excellence for Tourism.

Neal Lillibridge, of Property Data Services, was one of the winners. He has worked at Property Data Services for more than 25 years. 86 years old, Lillibridge remarked, “It feels kind of good.

I’ve been in the background pretty much all of my life. I enjoyed winning the award and it’s been fun!”

Beatrice Guilliams, known to most as Bea, was the other recipient of the award. Guilliams has worked at Riverside Towers for twenty years and is actively involved in the community.

She commented on her award, “What a shock!

When I started working at the high rise, my Dad told me, “Don’t you ever shame me”. This is for him. “I feel proud and honored to be in this group”. She was nominated by her supervisor.

A 75 year old locally owned and operated business, Hahn Oil was awarded with the Richard Rea Small Business of the Year Award, sponsored by the Coshocton Kiwanis Club.

T.J. Justice, President of the club, presented an emotional Ellen Conkle with the clock trophy that is the hallmark of this award. Hahn Oil now employs 19 and has been in the current location since 1955. Conkle commented, “I feel wonderful. This is a small town, everyone knows everybody, you know people by name and we know our customers. It’s just awesome to live in a town like this. The support is awesome. The family is wonderful, we all work together, and it’s just great that we can all work together. I just wish my parents were here to see it”.

Following an introduction of previous Coshoctonian Award winners that were in attendance, Robin Coffman delivered his usual well prepared preamble to the formal announcement of this year’s Coshoctonian Award winner, Mr. Charles R. Snyder.

Snyder said, “It’s been a real kick, I think, an emotional paycheck to have kids audition for the Children’s Choir who are children of students when I taught. The relationships with the people keep me going. Just loving the people. One of the things that have happened since we started the children’s choir 23 years ago is that the first time when there was something when all the kids from the high schools got together and found out that they could be friends. One of the cool things is to go to athletic or musical events and find kids from other schools who know these kids and they root these kids on in their events. It makes me believe that maybe peace in the world is possible”.

Snyder remarked when asked, “If you could put this award into a song, what would it be”, “Impossible Dream!” It just makes me think of all of these people that have helped me along the way and it really makes me miss my parents, who planted so many wonderful seeds in me, Roy McKinley, who got this choir started and Helen Wright, who came and talked to me when

america in bloom coshocton update: it’s a Plant sale!

Plans are progressing for America in Bloom Coshocton (ABC). The judges will be in the city June 21 and 22 and spend the two days touring different parts of Coshocton. To help with extra expenses, a plant sale is set for May 22.

So, if you want plants, then come to the ABC/Roscoe Plant Sale on Saturday for this joint fund raiser. The Roscoe Village Landscape Department and America in Bloom Coshocton committee are combining efforts to raise money for two separate projects. At Roscoe, monies will help buy plants for a new shelter that is being built at the Roscoe Village Visitor Center.

Money is also needed for extra expenses for America in Bloom, such as flyers, posters, and meals for the judges on Monday and Tuesday.

The ABC/Roscoe Plant Sale will be Saturday, May 22 from 8:30 a.m. - Noon at the

Coshocton County will be celebrating its Bicentennial next year and the America in Bloom Coshocton committee wants to begin the celebration with an exchange of daffodil bulbs called “Daffodil Daze.”

This free exchange will be a great opportunity to give away and receive bulbs that will emerge with a burst of color next spring.

In Bill Freund’s words, “Those who have, give, and those who want, get.”

This project will really get underway in June, which is two months away, but now is the time to be marking the daffodils in your flower beds that you wish to dig and donate before you forget the colors and placement of them.

Over three hundred area youngsters were supported by their moms, dads, grandpa’s grandmas and others at the annual Lake Park Fishing Derby held Saturday, May 1.

The derby, sponsored by the Coshocton County Sportsmen’s Association, provided an opportunity for area boys and girls to spend time with their family and learn something about fishing. 30-foot tree Dick Jones proudly displays this 30 foot tall Wisteria plant that he has had for fifteen years in his backyard. He says the plant has never reached these heights before, but didn’t bloom last year. He thinks this is the reason why it has grown so tall this year. This plant usually takes four to five years after planting to bloom, and usually blooms earlier in the year. But Dick thinks the cooler weather we have been having has made this plant a late bloomer this year. When the club moved to the fairgrounds in 1992, their goal was to have a mainline track finished. Those twenty years have come and gone, but still no mainline. However, don’t let that discourage you. The layout is still more than impressive and President Beighley says it will probably be another 10 – 15 years before the entire layout is completed.

“We can remember when a train went through town and the engineer would wave at you and there would always be a guy on the caboose and he would wave at you. I always wished I could go all the interesting places they go,” said member Richard Jones.

But the real pride and joy of the club is the old machine manufactured in the early 1900s used in Quincy, Ohio to route trains through interlocking sections of the track. This huge machine now runs a much smaller system at the Model Railroad Club, and is one of the few clubs in the nation that has one. You can’t miss it!

“This is our way of actually miniaturizing the real thing,” said President Beighley, “We are interested in locomotives and we try to replicate it in miniatures. We just love it!”

The next project on the club’s list is to create a life-like logging industry. With all the talent they possess, there is no doubt that any project they create will be creative, realistic, and absolutely amazing.

The Model Railroad Club has their regular meetings on Friday nights at 8 p.m. in their building at the fairgrounds. To get to their building, enter the fairground’s main entrance and go straight until you see the locomotive on your left.

Whether you’re young or just young at heart, the Model Railroad Club is enjoyable for everyone. So this Saturday, take a journey through time when locomotive trains used to run through Coshocton County and the engineer would tip his hat and blow that whistle!

Over two hundred students from Conesville Elementary enjoyed breakfast with Dad at the 3rd annual All-Pro Dads Breakfast sponsored by the Coshocton County Fatherhood Initiative and Dad-n-Family.

The breakfast was Thursday, April 29 and Friday, April 30 from 7:45 until around 8:45 a.m. Fourteen volunteers from the community including DJFS, Family PACCT, Coshocton County Head Start, OSU Extension Office, and Help Me Grow were on-hand to serve pancakes and help with the fun activities in the gym.

The Coshocton Canal Quilters wrapped up their annual quilt show on Sunday, May 2, and have begun preparation for the 2011 show. Event co-chair, Mary Louise Newell, exclaimed, “It’s been a great success.

We’ve had an excellent turnout and a wonderful time with it even though the weather didn’t quite cooperate. We had over 175 quilts on display and a quilt made by Pam Williams was judged the “Best of Show” by the community”. Newell added that anyone interested in joining the Canal Quilters can contact one of the members of the group. They are always looking for more quilters!
