Keith Davis graduated from the University of Southern California with his team’s highest grade point average and a degree in Business Finance. While at U.S.C., Keith was allconference and was selected to the All-American Strength Team. Keith also played in one of college football’s biggest bowl games, the Rose Bowl. He has won two championship rings.

After college, Keith signed his professional football contract with the New York Giants.

During the pre-season, he was one of the strongest players on the team. Keith Davis stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 265 lbs., bench presses 515 lbs. and leg presses 1800 lbs.

River View Ministerial Association is excited to present Keith as their speaker this year, Keith was chosen because of his abilities to motivate students and because he presents feats of strength. Coshocton Head Start has annual carnival

BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Head Start had their annual endof-the-year carnival on May 9 at the Fairgrounds.

The event was a kick-off for the Head Start fundraiser to inform the community about their intent to renovate part of the Head Start building, located on County Road 16. A variety of educational stations were set up outside of the Commercial Building where children and their guardians could play and have fun. A Coshocton County EMS ambulance and a school bus were on hand for the children to tour, as well as a cruiser from the Coshocton County Sheriff’s office.

“We want to educate the community on the importance of head start in the lives of children and for the next generation,” said Carly Griffth, who is in charge of enrollment and parent activity at Head Start.

Coshocton County Head Start serves children infant through kindergarten.

gives 700 hours of law enforcement control for holidays and special programing. The total amount of the grant is $27,799.63 and is 100 percent reimbursable. The money used for the grant last year is still available, so no money increase is needed.

“It’s a good grant,” said Crawford. “It puts the cruisers on the street where they need to be and doesn’t cost the tax payers money.”

The commissioners approved a motion for Crawford to apply for the grant again this year.

To close the meeting, Jeff Wherley updated the commissioners on regulations to install new park benches at the court square and on Main Street. The goal is to replace the current wooden benches with 20 new plastic benches made from recycled plastic. Each bench will need to be labeled with a plaque stating that the benches were paid for by Coshocton Solid Waste District.

Benches are $300 each and plaques would cost around $100.

Among other items on the agenda, the commissioners approved a motion to sign Resolution 2013-14 for the Brine Permit Application from Walhonding Valley Sand and Gravel for the surface application of salt brine to the company’s haul road, lot for dust control and on stock piles for ice control.

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Commissioners met today, May 8 to discuss a possible partnership with MARC’s towers for a new push to talk radio systems that will be installed in the county. Darryl L. Anderson, program director, gave a brief history of MARC’s towers in the state of Ohio and stressed the need for one more tower between Coshocton and West Lafayette.

There are currently 218 MARC’s towers statewide, 10 of those being in Coshocton County and the surrounding areas. These towers have outgrown their capacity on the current system being used, so Anderson wants to upgrade those towers to the new P25 platform, which should be completed in the county this time next year.

Currently, Coshocton County tower locations include Conesville, White Eyes, Killbuck, New Castle, and Brinkhaven. These towers, along with the others located in the surrounding areas, will be upgraded for a total of 3.5 million dollars within the next year. The plan is to build a new tower in between West Lafayette and Coshocton on the site of the old county home.

All of the local towers provide access to incar radios used by emergency responders in our county. The weakest signal area where not much coverage is provided is in West Lafayette. A new tower should eliminate this problem.

This new 250-foot tower would be built by county funds and MARCs would maintain the tower after it is built. The company would also reimburse 50 percent of the cost in user fee credits. The estimated cost of the potentially new West Lafayette tower is $650,000.

The commissioners then met with Lt. Jim Crawford about applying for a 2014 high visibility enforcement grant. This federal grant

Poetry and Music Night Write-On Writers Guild Thursday, May 16 7 - 9 p.m.

Tim Hortons poetry has been recently published in the Ohio Poetry Association anthology, Everything Stops and Listens. All teens from the community are invited to read their own poems or favorite poems by others. Also featured is Ben Rader, best know to the Ohio Poetry Association as a haiku expert who enjoys many flavors of poetry.

Ben, from Norwalk, Ohio, is a retired educator and a Sherlockian. He has been published in small press magazines such as Pudding, Skyline, Grasslands Review, Ohio Writer, and Peripatetic Poets. He has also been published in anthologies from various sources, including the Ohio Poetry Association, Pudding House Publications, Green Panda Press, Bottom Dog Press, and Press Here to Begin Press. Musician for the evening is Charlie Berwinkle from Dover, Ohio. Charlie has been a professional guitarist and teacher for over forty years and has taught guitar to many teens in our area. Specializing in music to relax by, his styles include the following: Classical – He studied with a contemporary of Segovia, world renowned classical guitarist. Jazz - He studied in Pittsburgh with a renowned Orchestra guitarist.

Chet Atkins - He performed in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in 1999.

May 17th, 1953 We all scream for ice cream! A new Dari shop had just opened that Saturday on Otsego Avenue in Coshocton. The Dari Delite, owned

by Paul Markley, who also owned the adjacent gas station, offered different-sized cones or sundaes, malts, and milkshakes. The machine installed to make these frozen treats had the capacity to make 30 gallons an hour and used a special formula to ensure every treat tasted delicious. The building measured 16 by 24 feet and Markley placed a large Dari Delite sign on top of the building that could be seen in both directions.

May 19th, 1963 The Coshocton General Electric Plant had yet another award to add to their collection.

The plant had recently received their 17th safety award in the last 12 years and to commemorate the occasion, each employee received a first aid auto kit. Oct. 17, 1950 was the last recorded lost-time accident the Coshocton plant had had. Since that time, employees had over 17 million man hours without another such accident. Roy Jones of the Coshocton plant had been actively interested in safety at work for 30 years. He was presently conducting a first aid course for local GE supervisors.

1973

May 15th, 1973 One of the most disastrous fires in the downtown business district occurred at 3:43 p.m. at Sears-Roebuck Store with an excess of $150,000 in damage. Luckily, no one was injured and part of the store was spared. A clerk discovered the flames coming from the ceiling over the women’s lounge, and she and two others tried to extinguish the flames as 911 was called. It took firefighters until 7 p.m. to get the flames under control. The only section of the building to escape damage was the tire and battery section.

1983

May 15th, 1983 Sue Hall painted mostly for fun. A self-taught painter, Hall painted with tole, a type of lacquered or enameled metal ware, usually dark-green, ivory, or black. When she saw a ‘For Rent’ sign in one of the train cars at the Unusual Junction, Hall began forming the idea of selling her works of art. After a talk with Bob McKenna, owner of Unusual Junction, her dream became realized and she opened, ‘The Tole Train’. She painted on canvas, wood, boxes, saws, and pretty much anything else. She hoped one day to teach a tole class to children.

Warsaw Elementary receives school of honor designation

WARSAW - Warsaw Elementary School received a letter from Dr. Richard A. Ross, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Ohio Department of Education dated April 29, 2013, that named the school as a High Performing School of Honor, based on the 2011-2012 Local Report Card.

The department established the High Performing Schools of Honor and High Progress Schools of Honor programs this year to recognize Ohio schools that have sustained or increased student achievement over time in reading, math and graduation rates, while serving many disadvantaged students.

Ross wrote in the letter, “What your school has done to serve students from all backgrounds is working, and I urge you to share your strategies with other Ohio schools. The department plans to spotlight your school as an outstanding example of what is possible when students, educators, parents and community members come together and believe that all students can succeed. Please share my gratitude with all of those who contributed to your school’s success.

In the coming weeks, we will be sending you a Schools of Honor banner to display in your school building.

Congratulations and my very best wishes for continued success. I know that the determination and compassion for students that led to your school’s success will continue to make you an asset to your community.”

Mr. Frank Polen, Warsaw Elementary School principal, said of the honor, “This is a tremendous honor. You find out that you are one of only thirty-eight of the nearly six thousand schools there are (in Ohio). It shows consistency over a five year period, ninety percent passage rate on math and reading. It’s just a tribute to our students and staff, and parents’ hard work developing them. We always stress that it’s what we do day to day that makes the big difference. That’s what allows for awards to come, because we don’t ask them to be excellent one day, we ask them to do that day after day and that’s the consistency. We

have students in our building who know no other way and that’s real exciting. The community involvement and the trust the families give us with their kids and our school environment has made all the difference. It’s a whole culture, we talk about a “Culture of Excellence”, and that’s from bus drivers, cooks, custodians, everyone has an impact on our children.”

Mr. Dalton Summers, River View Local Schools superintendent, said, “This is another award that Warsaw has gotten. Warsaw traditionally has been a school of promise for several years. This is a newer award that just came out from the Ohio Department of Education this year. It’s another example of where Warsaw is excelling with student achievement. It’s basically an award that show how, with a diverse socio-economic population, we’re still able to meet the standards that are being set at the state level and as always we’re very proud of Warsaw as we are all of our elementary schools. It’s a great honor and the teachers there deserve to be happy. Mr. Polen is doing an outstanding job and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”

COSHOCTON - OSU Extension and Local Bounty Coshocton, LLC are collaborating to offer a series of kids cooking classes this spring and summer. The hands-on classes will give students the opportunity to explore different foods and see how fun cooking can be. Classes will be at Local Bounty.

Kids ages 4-10 who have an interest in cooking are encouraged to register for this fun, hands-on, summer-long series of classes. Some of the class session topics include: planting a kitchen garden, salsa party, honey and granola pops and more.

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Elks received a $2000 Grant from the Elks National Foundation and presented checks to three organizations in the community. The Elks National Foundation began in 1928 and since that time has used only the interest on the original investment that includes any donations throughout the years. The ENF is second only to the United States Government in the number of scholarships given each year. They also support youth activities such as Drug Awareness programs, Soccer Shoot, Hoop Shoot, Student of the Month/Year and Americanism. The ENF supports the National Veterans Service Commission with Reps at VA Hospitals and Veterans Homes throughout the 50 states. The Coshocton Elks are very proud to support and honor these three organizations.

Habitat has last Women’s Build Day

WEST LAFAYETTE - Habitat For Humanity had their last Women’s Build Day on Saturday, May 11 at their current housing project in West Lafayette. More than 200 women signed up to volunteer during the three Women’s Build Day dates with 86 women volunteering on the last day.

“It’s been beyond our expectations how many women have signed up,” said Jane Mautz, building chair.

On the last day of the build, the volunteers were putting up walls, nailing siding to the outer structure, and installing windows and doors.

“These guys are doing such an awesome job today,” said Paula Emery, who was in charge of the Women’s Build Day. “A lot of women have never even nailed in their lives. They never thought they could do something like that. There’s a real sense of accomplishment.”

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Senior Center had their first Mid-Ohio Food Bank Mobile Market on May 8 from 1 – 3 p.m. Seniors over the age of 60 who live in Coshocton County and meet certain low-income guidelines are eligible to participate in the program the second Wednesday of each month.

“Right away, we knew it was definitely something we needed to bring to our seniors,” said Jamie Thomas, director of the Senior Center.

“We’ve seen the need for food increasing, especially for our seniors. It’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet.”

A refrigerated truck will provide seniors who meet requirements with free fresh produce, eggs, milk, potatoes, bread, etc. Participants only need to bring a shopping bag with them.

Seniors can go through the line and chose what they want from each station. They do not need to take anything they will not use.

Twenty-five volunteers from the community came out to help with distributing food during

the May 8 event.

“We really appreciate everyone who’s volunteered in this project,” said Thomas.

“We absolutely could not have this here without them.

It’s been great to have so many volunteers to come in and help with this project.”

To qualify for the project, seniors over 60 need to meet specific income guidelines. For a one-member household, have an income of no more than $1,861 per month, and for a twomember household, no more than $2,521 per month. Add $660 for each additional member.

The Coshocton Senior Center has partnered with Mid-Ohio Foodbanks before with their commodity program, which is able to serve 240 seniors a month.

Coshocton Health and Rehab was at the event to serve refreshments to those waiting in the food distribution line.

The next food distribution at the Senior Center will be June 12.

The Taste for Summer is a fundraiser for garden projects at Clary Gardens, specifically towards the developing children’s garden.

Tickets for the Taste For Summer event are $5 for admission. Wine tasting tickets are an additional $10 for 10 wine tastings (which includes a complimentary wine glass), and the beer tastings are $5 for six beer tastings. Parking is free.

FRESNO - Fresno Alumni Banquet will be on Saturday, June 8 at Ridgewood High School located at 602 Johnson St. at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Honored classes will be 70th year, 1943, and 60th year, 1953. Seniors that were awarded the Fresno scholarship will be introduced.

River View Local Schools each year and this year’s event, held Saturday, May 11 from 10 am to 2 pm, was no exception. With art exhibits, singing, bounce houses in the gym, pony rides and animal petting opportunities in the FFA area, a fly-in by Med Flight and of course, the dunk tank on a typical chilly day, hundreds of students and their families enjoyed a day of activities and fun.

Renee Anderson, who coordinates the event, said, “This is our sixth annual Black Bear Fest. We do this every year to celebrate the educational excellence of our school district. It’s just a good time to showcase student work. We have a new art show display this year, dunk tank for Relay for Life, there’s so much to do. We just want everyone to come out and have a good day.”

“It’s important to showcase our school district and get a lot of people involved. We like to let people know all the good things about our school district. It’s just a time where the volunteers come together, the teachers work hard behind the scenes and it just takes everybody to put this event on for the day.”

Erma Downer of Coshocton celebrated her 90th birthday on May 7 at a party held in her honor by the Coshocton County Health Department. Downer works as a file clerk in Maternal & Child Health office two days a week for three hours each day. Erma began working for the Health Department in October, 2008. Many co-workers, family, and friends attended the festive occasion for this special senior well known for her zest for life and infectious sense of humor.

COSHOCTON - Hundreds of customers and guests attended the twelfth annual customer appreciation day held at the Frontier Power property on South Second Street in Coshocton on Friday, May 10. Employees of Frontier Power, Frontier Propane, Frontier Supply, Whit’s Frozen Custard and Progressive Water staffed the event.

Kelly Kendall, who is the Manager of Administration and Office Services for the company, said, “This is our twelfth annual event and we just like to show the community how much we appreciate their support.

We like to do this annually and we have had a very good day so far. I would say we are close to 900 people today. It’s been good; the rain has held off, we have been very fortunate.”

Guests enjoyed grilled hot dogs, grilled hamburgers, chips, and a choice of chocolate or original Whit’s Frozen Custard and cold beverages of choice. Kendall said, “It’s a lot of work but our people enjoy it.”

Frontier Power is the main sponsor of the 32nd annual Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival, which will be held June 8, 9 and 10 at the fairgrounds.

“We’re very happy to be able to be a position to sponsor that and we’re looking forward to it.”

Kendall said that the company’s employees enjoy the day because, “I think they enjoy seeing everyone. There are people who have been here most of the afternoon. They just come and visit. We have a setup with the water, we have a generator out here, most of our Frontier Power employees are out here, and you can talk about whatever you would like to talk about.

I just think it’s being here for the community.”

Swim coach resigns CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

COSHOCTON - Coshocton High School Athletic Department is sad to announce that Mr. Nat McColley, Head Swim Coach has resigned his coaching position.

Coach McColley has been the boys and girls head coach from 1998 thru 2013. His teams have earned a combined six Sectional Championships, three ECOL Championships, and five Seosl Championships. Coach McColley had 11 Individual State Qualifiers, four Relay State Qualifiers, and seven Individual All State Award Winners.

All 12 of the 12 girl’s records and 6 of the 12 boy’s records were set during Coach McColley’s tenure.

Coach McColley was named ECOL Women’s and Men’s Coach of the Year three times each.

Coach McColley’s overall record is: Boys 159-60-1 with the 2007-2008 team going 12-0; Girls 147-68-1; making his career record: 306128-2.

St. John’s Church to offer new community outreach program COSHOCTON - St. John’s United Church of Christ will be introducing a new community outreach program in Coshocton on May 18 called Caring Essentially for Coshocton, which will distribute personal care items, cleaning supplies, and baby products to members of the community for free. The church hopes to continue this program the third Saturday of each month.

“We hope the people who need it will be the ones who come,” said Kay Dunfee, co-director of the program. “But they don’t need to show proof of income, just have a need.”

However, there are a few items people will need to bring. If this is your first time coming and you have children under the age of 18, please bring their birth certificate or custody papers. Each time, you will also need to bring a photo ID and a recent utility bill showing your current address.

The church is in need of donations of any

everyday household item. These include but are not limited to trash bags, razors, shaving cream, hand soap, laundry detergent, wash clothes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and many other such items. They are in great need for baby diapers or monetary donations to help furnish baby diapers.

“We are hoping to get other churches, organizations, and individuals involved because we want it to be a community-involved mission,” said Dunfee.

Volunteers are also needed to help stock shelves and work on distribution days.

“This is a new mission for us and we have been looking for a mission to do in the community,” said Dunfee. “People can go to food pantries, but they can’t buy these items with food stamps. We just felt there was a real need for it.”

“She was so helpful,” said Dunfee. “She thinks this is such a good idea. She’s all for it and has helped us so much. We are very grateful.”

Caring Essentially for Coshocton will be open the third Saturday of the month at St. John’s United Church of Christ, located on the corner of 8th and Orange Streets from 10 – 11:30 a.m.

“We really need community involvement because we would like to do this every month and keep it going,” said Dunfee.

St. John’s also received a grant from the Coshocton Foundation to start their community outreach program.

4-H Summer Camp Opportunities COSHOCTON - Coshocton County 4-H is again offering two day camps and one weeklong summer camp. The first day camp will be Cloverbud Camp on June 8 at Lake Park from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cloverbud Camp is for any youth at least five years old and in kindergarten as of Jan. 1 this year through the second grade. The theme for this year is “Around the World”. Kids will get to go fishing, participate in a nature hike, make a craft, and play games all following the theme. They will travel from country to country taking their passport with them along the way.

Lunch will be provided. Cost is $15 for the first child and $10 for any sibling.

The second day camp that will be offered is Giddy-Up-Go Horse Camp on June 15 from 9 a.m.

WARSAW - Junior Achievement USA is committed to developing and implementing vital and innovative programs to help students understand the importance of planning for their financial future. Junior Achievement USA is a nonprofit organization financed by businesses, foundations, government, and individuals.

Recently Mr. Bob Bigrigg, President of Ohio Heritage, volunteered his time to teach Personal Finance with the students from River View High School utilizing Junior Achievement resources to instruct. Mrs. Moran’s Personal Finance classes allowed Mr. Bigrigg to present topics about Plan to Earn, Saving for Life, The Budget Game, Credit Choices, and Savvy Consumer.

He met with the students once a week for five weeks. The experience was very enriching for the students to integrate and learn the financial issues faced by teens and young adults in today’s world.

The next meeting will be June 2 at Wakatomika Township Hall. Recreation was by Dylan Walker. Meeting was adjourned by Joe Sidwell and second by Chase Courtright.

COSHOCTON - Entries for the annual Big Tree Contest are now being taken. This contest is sponsored by the Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District. It is open to all species of trees growing on privately owned property in Coshocton County. Property line trees and trees growing on federal, state or local government owned land are not eligible. Any person can enter a tree physically located in Coshocton County whether or not the tree is growing on the nominator’s property.

Again in 2013, there will be two winning trees chosen. The Big Tree Contest is a countywide contest, while the Coshocton Is Blooming category is limited to trees growing within the City of Coshocton. Coshocton SWCD encourages you to submit as many entries as you like for you or your neighbors’ trees.

Entries will be measured by a representative from the Coshocton SWCD using the national standardized measurement criteria.

COSHOCTON COUNTY - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has released the Geographic Distribution of VA Expenditures (GDX) Report for 2012.

The report details VA expenditures at the state, county, and Congressional District level.

The Report includes categories such as Compensation and Pension, Construction, Insurance, and Medical Care. Veteran population estimates and the number of unique patients who used VA health care services are also available.

In Coshocton County, the VA reports a total expenditure of $11,269,000 (million).

Included in that amount is $5,640,000 in compensation and pension payments; $474,000 in education, vocational rehabilitation and employment; $119,000 in insurance and indemnities; and $5,035,000 in medical care.

The VA estimates that Coshocton County has a veteran population of 3,088.

“These figures are largely representative of the efforts that take place in your local Veterans Service Office,” said Jim Barstow, Veterans Service Officer. “Veterans come to us to help with enrollment into the VA healthcare system, to file a claim for service-connected conditions and/or injuries or are in need of pension.

“What is especially gratifying is to know that a significant portion of the compensation and pension payments that our veterans receive flows right back into the local economy as they buy homes, cars, groceries and other necessities of life.”

The Veterans Service Office operated on a budget of $359,830 in 2012.

“We are proud to be able to provide these many services to our deserving veterans,” Barstow added.

Butterfly Workshop. Join the Roscoe Village Landscape Department as it present a two-part workshop on The Butterflies of Coshocton. On Thursday, May 23, David Woodmansee will be the guest speaker when he focuses on what butterflies frequent the Coshocton area and their habits. The second session will take place in June with a hands-on approach.

Participants will work with Connie Miller in the Butterfly Garden at Roscoe Village in planting nectar perennials and host plants. Following the June session, perennials which attract butterflies will be handed out. There is a limit of 15 for this two-part workshop and a fee of $5 helps to cover cost of the perennials.

Riders 4 Relief. Riders 4 Relief motorcycle show and family day will be Sunday, May 26 in Roscoe Village. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a Christian bike service and music with the House of Prayer Ellettsville. Operation Give Back. Operation Give Back Community Service Day will be Saturday, June 8 at the River View Community Park from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

There will also be a unit family day from noon – 5 p.m. at the River View Community Park. Soldiers should report to Warsaw at 8:30 a.m. for a unit formation at the park at 8:45 a.m. Community service projects will begin at 9 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. A unit formation at the town square for a flag pole dedication will be at 1 p.m. The Warsaw swimming pool and park will open at 11 a.m. for the unit family day. No admission fee. Music entertainment will begin at noon. A rubber duck race will be at 2 p.m. and a cornhole tournament will be at 2:30 p.m. The day will end with a cookout from 3 – 5 p.m. provided by local veteran organizations.

Main Street Cruz. This year’s Main Street Cruz event will be June 22 from 4 p.m. until midnight. Featuring food, games, and 70’s music. Cruise like we did in high school and support a great cause. NEWARK - The Ohio State University at Newark Marketing and Public Relations (MPR) office received a Merit Award in the Annual Report category for the Ohio State Newark Progress Report, “Forging One Ohio State.” Winners were recently announced in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards, sponsored by Higher Education Marketing Report.

It was 28 years ago that this national competition began its efforts to recognize the field of educational marketing and advertising. Today, the industry has matured into a sophisticated and competitive field, meeting the needs of knowledgeable prospects that are making their own educational decisions.

The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country. This year, close to 3,000 entries were received from more than one-thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all fifty states and several foreign countries.

The annual progress report, designed by Leslie Lenzo McLaughlin, senior graphic designer, highlights the innovative and engaging activities and projects of Ohio State Newark over the past year.

“This award exemplifies the commitment to quality that this department continually strives to achieve,” said Alice Hutzel-Bateson, marketing and public relations director. “I’m so proud to be part of dedicated team of professionals.”

Judges for the Educational Advertising Awards consisted of national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and the editorial board of Higher Education Marketing Report.

American Legion Post 65 presented Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County a donation totaling $3,520 to be used toward Habitat’s veteran build. Free tax prep program offered CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON - A grant through the Ohio Benefit Bank provided funds for a partnership between the United Way and Job and Family Services that allowed volunteers to prepare simple tax returns at no cost. During a reception at Job and Family Services on April 22, the 12 volunteers were acknowledged for a job well done and informed that their efforts allowed for the filing of 167 total tax returns for this past tax season. Site Supervisor Tonja Ward said of this first year, “Not knowing exactly what to expect, having dependable volunteers played a very important part of the success and it makes me look forward to being a part of it next year, if given the opportunity.”

Pam Chaney, one of the 12 volunteers said, “When Tonja asked if I would help out, I thought it would be nice to help many of those I see on a regular basis anyway, and because probably 90% of the people filing received a return, it was a very positive experience!”

The Senior Center also filed free tax returns with the AARP program and they served approximately 360 individuals.

The United Way is hoping to partner with OBB and Job and Family Services again next year in order to provide the same free tax services next year to even more qualifying families and individuals. The focus of the United Way is on education, health and income. We have the capacity to recruit people and organizations who can lend their time and passion to advance the common good, therefore creating a better life for all.
