accompanied the Celebration Singers, the high school choir since its inception five years ago. She helps with VBS and also served as a leader for the church’s Youth Group. “It was a total surprise,” said Heading. “When you do this kind of work and you enjoy it as much as I do, it doesn’t feel like work.” The Celtic Cross is a bronze medallion with a yellow cross against a dark blue background and hangs from a blue and green plaid ribbon. The award also comes with a personalized certificate. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Presbyterian Scouters (NAPS) and co-sponsored by P.R.A.Y. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

FLAGS All Coshocton County Veterans were invited to pay tribute and honor to our fallen heroes on Saturday, May 18 at South Lawn Cemetery and others throughout the county by placing an American flag on each grave of a veteran. Pictured here is Dean Kittell, commander of the Sons of the American Legion, and Rick Valentine of the Sons of the American Legion placing a flag on a veteran’s grave. Flags were provided by the Coshocton County Veteran’s Service, and after only a short time, the whole of South Lawn Cemetery was covered with the stars and stripes. Displaying flags on veteran’s graves used to take up to two hours, but due to more help in recent years, the process now only takes about half an hour. The flags were displayed as a sign of honor and tribute for Armed Forces Day, which was Saturday, and the upcoming Memorial Day, Flag Day, and July 4th holidays. Memorial Day
COSHOCTON – The Oak Ridge Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in town and used to be host to a Memorial Day program every year. Lewis “Pooch” Blackson would like to share some of his memories he has of this impressive Memorial Day salute. “I want to share this with the community,” said Blackson. “We used to go to Oak Ridge and they had wonderful programs, really impressive programs and I remember the two boys who used to play Taps.” Those two boys were Jim Powell and Dick Stipes. One would play on top of the Oak Ridge Cemetery hill while the other played the haunting echo down in the stockyards. Blackson also remembers the biggest and most patriotic parade used to take place prior to the Memorial Day program at Oak Ridge. In between Second and Water Streets, the elementary school children would line up all dressed in their patriotic best, waving flags, and marching to the cemetery. Residents used to stand on the side of the streets, some joining in the parade and others watching and cheering. Once they arrived at the top of Oak Ridge, the children and members of the community would pay tribute to the brave men who had served their country in what Blackson called an impressive program, and something that has stood out in his mind for 75 years. Military men would be present, all dressed in their uniforms while county dignitaries would sit on an old farm wagon. But to a 10-yearold Blackson, what he really wanted to see and hear was Tillie Sheffield singing, “A Land Beyond the River”. “That was the highlight of the program,” said Blackson. “The highlight of the day was my good friend, Tillie, singing ‘A Land Beyond the River’. After all these years, it still brings a tear to my eye.” Although many years have passed since the Oak Ridge Cemetery has had their Memorial Day program, Blackson still makes a pilgrimage every year to the same spot where he remembers so vividly the impressive program from his youth. Taking a mouth harp, he quietly plays Taps as he remembers all the children in the parade, the waving flags, the men in their smart uniforms, and especially Tillie softly singing, ‘A Land Beyond the River’. The ARC program is faith-based and work-based where individuals use a 12-step recovery in the Life Recovery Bible. Participants must attend Bible study and worship services where they will learn to live independently without the crutch of drugs and alcohol. The training for John and Tricia can take up to a year and then they will be moved into an ARC facility in close proximity to their training program. Cornelius said that, although he believes New Jersey is where the Lord wants him and his wife to be at this time in their lives, he will miss the people and community of Coshocton greatly. “It never ceases to amaze me how good God is and how the people here respond and stand up to help support everything,” said Cornelius. “We’ll always carry the people in our hearts wherever we go. The people of Coshocton will always be with us.” New Jersey isn’t completely unfamiliar territory to John and Tricia as they both did ministry in Newark, NJ when they attended seminary, and there will be a couple familiar faces to greet them when they arrive on June 26.

This type of ensemble became popular in the late 19th century before the advent of recordings as a way to reproduce and study symphonic works. “We don’t know a lot of people there, but we know God will be there,” said Cornelius. When Cornelius reflects on his time in Coshocton, he recalls that so many wonderful things and blessings have happened in Coshocton County. To the person who received a little extra help with paying rent to the person who accepted Jesus for the first time, Cornelius and his wife will treasure all of these memories for years to come. “Everything we have done here is a reflection of the community,” said Cornelius. “We give all the glory to God,” After John and Tricia move to New Jersey, Majors Steven and Hermas Pearl will be taking over this charge in Coshocton. Cornelius has every belief that God will work through them and that Coshocton will embrace them with open arms and hearts. “We know the people coming will be able to pick up and go in so many directions here in Coshocton County,” said Cornelius. “They will find that Coshocton is an incredible community. Fresno Farmer’s Market gears up for Memorial Day
Judge Blanchard interacts with students
Probate and Juvenile Court Judge Van Blanchard II spent his lunch hour recently at Union Elementary School reading to the Second Grade Students. The effort was to help support the Coshocton Rotary Club and its literacy project in which each child receives a free book. Coshocton County Juvenile Court Staff and Judge Van Blanchard II recently hosted the K-Kids from South Lawn Elementary School. The Coshocton Kiwanis Club Members Rick Merrill and Angela Richcreek arranged for the tour of the Court and educational session (mock detention hearing) in which students participated. Kiwanis oversees the Club to promote positive decisions and community involvement. PHOTO

Mix all of the above ingredients together, let chill for one hour and serve with fresh tender radishes, baby carrots and fresh green onions. It also goes good with wheat crackers. The vendors at the Fresno Farmers’ Market would also like to take this opportunity to wish all area graduates the very best as they embark on their new voyage into adulthood. Good Luck in all avenues! This is a very exciting time in their young lives. And as always we look forward to bringing the farm to your family’s table and picnic table for graduation celebrations. The Fresno Market is open every Saturday morning rain or shine from 8:00 to noon, in downtown Fresno at McCoy’s Auto. Signs are posted. For more information about the market or to become a vendor please call 740-545-0849 or 740-545-0997. Also if you have any ideas or suggestions for the Fresno Market we would love to hear them. FRESNO - The vendors at the Fresno Market wish to extend a very happy and safe Memorial Day to all area residents, families and friends. Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer. With school out and most graduations over, the long three day weekend, filled with barbeques and picnics, is a great time to come do your shopping with us here in Fresno. More importantly, it is a time to pause and reflect on the Americans who paid the ultimate price for our freedom and our country. The holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day, but was changed by Congress in 1882 to what we now know as Memorial Day. Since 1911 the Indianapolis 500 has been run in conjunction with the holiday along with memorial dedications and parades. Truly this holiday is steeped in many traditions. So “gentlemen start your engines” and head out to the Fresno Farmers’ Market for all of your holiday market needs. All of the vendors at the Fresno Market are more than happy to assist you in planning your Memorial Day celebrations. The market will open as usual on Saturday at 8:00 until noon to provide you with all of the essentials for a great holiday meal; homemade bread for sandwiches, fresh pies, cinnamon rolls, cakes and cookies for dessert, fresh brown eggs for egg salad or deviled eggs, fresh tender spinach & lettuce for salads, fresh rhubarb for pies or crumbles and homemade noodles for a pot of chicken and noodles would round out any great picnic.

Riders 4 Relief this weekend at Roscoe Village BY BETH SCOTT
COSHOCTON – Riders 4 Relief is entering its fifth year of raising money for local food pantries. This family-friendly event started when co-founder Amy Taylor worked in New Orleans and saw how the city was affected by Katrina. When she returned home, she and Tom Edwards started Riders 4 Relief with half the money going to New Orleans and half staying here in the county. For the past two years, and this year, all the monies raised will stay in the county. The motorcycle show started at Auer Ace Hardware, which sponsors the event each year, but fortunately, grew too big for the store to handle. The event has been at Roscoe Village for the past three years and because of that, more activities are able to be offered. “We keep getting bigger and bigger,” said Taylor. “We have people coming in from all over the country and we’re really excited about that.” The event kicks off with a Christian motorcycle service at 9 a.m. and participants can register their bikes by noon. There is a $5 entry fee for each bike entered in the show and a non-perishable food item. There will also be a 75-mile drive through the county for $5 per rider. The public is admitted free and parking is free. Bikers do not have to enter the show as there will also be a biker cruise-in. There will be something for everyone at the motorcycle show. There will be a basket raffle, a Red Cross blood drive, live reptiles, carnival rides, face painting, crafts, and vendors. At 1 p.m., the first ever National Onion Ring Eating contest will take place with some of the nation’s top eating contestants participating. At 3 p.m., Uncorked will be providing live music. Awards will be handed out at 2:30 or 3 p.m., depending on when the eating contest ends. Raffle winners will also be announced at that time. Winners do not need to be present to win. Awards are handmade this year by The Front Porch. “It’s a family event,” said Taylor. “It’s not your typical motorcycle show. There’s something for everybody. I’m very blessed we’ve got so many people that support us in what we do.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Warehouse Steak n’ Stein to host first National Onion Ring Eating Contest BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – Attention all onion ring lovers! The Warehouse Steak n’ Stein and Auer Ace Hardware are sponsoring the first ever National Onion Ring Eating Competition during the Riders For Relief event on Sunday, May 26 in Roscoe Village. The contest will start at 1 p.m. with 15 contestants. Two contestants will be local and the remaining are national eating contestants. Part of Whitewoman Street will be closed for the competition, which will take place on a flatbed truck provided by Coshocton Trucking. This contest is an official All Pro Eating sanctioned Competitive Eating Championship. By the end of the event, a new Onion Ring Eating Champion will be crowned and a new All Pro Eating National Onion Ring Eating Record will be established. The 2012 Competitive Eating Rookie of the Year, Jamie ‘The Bear’ McDonald was crowned the world’s number one independent competitive eater and is scheduled to participate in the Onion Ring Eating event. Each contestant will have eight minutes to eat as many onion rings as possible with only a glass of water to help them. According to John Larson, owner of The Warehouse Steak n’ Stein, an estimated nine to 12 pounds of onion rings will be eaten during the contest. Larson also estimates that 150 pounds of onions will be used for the contest alone. A Pepsi trailer will be on hand selling onion rings to the general public. The Warehouse Steak n’ Stein will also have food available outdoors. “The key is to just have fun and get people in to Coshocton,” said Larson. The All Pro Eating Promotions was founded in 2004 and is the world’s only recognized Independent Competitive Eating organization. They have sanctioned over 180 major competitive eating competitions throughout the world. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Wholesome Valley Farm We are sending down some freshly ground grains this week including cornmeal, spelt and wheat. They also have past-date milk available at half off which are still perfectly suitable for baking and cooking. Windy Hill Berry Farm & Vineyard The fancy mixed salad greens are finally ready, thanks to our new Hoop House. Try them in this salad recipe from Walnut Creek Cheese. Also our English Muffins will be back this week. Try them toasted with some of our Remembrance, Rosemary Grape jelly. We will be bringing flats of 30 eggs for $4, laid by our new pullet (young) hens, two of which equal one large egg. Are you in the mood for egg salad? Before you boil the eggs add a small amount of salt to the water to toughen the shell. Another trick is to add two teaspoons of white vinegar to the water, which may also prevent cracking. The vinegar tends to soften the shell allowing the interior more room for expansion. Immediately cool the eggs in ice water then peel them before storing in the refrigerator. Enjoy the nice weather this weekend; plan a picnic! Thanks so much for your support! - Local Bounty Vendors

We will have ground lamb (it goes quickly!), lamb chops (fantastic on the grill), boneless leg roasts, and more. As always, our lamb is grassfed and all natural. Mullet Apiaries Spring is in bloom! The succession of blossoms changes from week to week giving all the pollinators reason to get out there and work. This week we noticed the wild black raspberries are beginning to bud, the May Apple flowers have unfolded, as have the wild geranium and cinquefoil. The honeybees are busy gathering pollen and nectar from many sources. Be sure to taste the fruits of their labor in Mullet Apiaries honey and creamed honey. You can use it in place of sugar in those cool summer drinks we will all soon be sipping!

Known as the home of The Battlers, Knight said he likes the atmosphere and the area at Philippi. Knight, who played football as a senior for the Black Bears, said he will play defense as a safety most likely. He played wing and safety for the Bears last season and helped the Bears to a 5-5 season. Knight, who lettered four years in baseball for River View, will be studying athletic training. Josh said about his years at River View and what he learned about being able to play at the next level, “You have to be a leader, keep working hard and never giving up and you never know what will happen if you try.” Knight said his memories of last fall’s

I think next year will even be better.” Knight gave credit for his abilities to his parents, sister, girlfriend and her parents, and coaching staff at River View. “I’m going to miss the teachers, everybody here at River View”, Josh said. Looking ahead, he said, “It’s going to be fun. It will be a new experience, a faster paced game.” River View athletic director Rod Lindsey said about Knight, “When Josh was a freshman we had him in the baseball program. Josh is a four year baseball letter winner and I had the privilege of coaching him for two years. He is very athletic, and very talented, he is kind of a unique athlete. We talked to him until we were blue in the face about coming out for football and finally in his senior year he did and earned an Honorable Mention All Ohio. We saw that he was very athletic when he came over from the junior high. He is a great kid and works hard. I’m glad to see him take that talent to the next level and hopefully he will put in four good years at A-B.” The Battlers open the 2013 season against Pace University on Saturday, Sept. 7 in their new multi-sport athletic facility. SPEAKER Honorary speaker Shirley Kirkpatrick told the survivors at the 2013 Coshocton County Relay for Life to “laugh a lot, smile a lot and have faith in your God.” BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Relay for Life raised over $112,000 as dozens of survivors, caregivers and hundreds of team members and volunteers gathered for the 18th annual event held this past weekend at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Shirley Kirkpatrick gave an inspiring opening talk, telling those gathered at the opening ceremony that “There are more of us here because more
of us are surviving”, which drew applause from the audience. “We are not only surviving we are surviving longer than we used to”, said Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick asked the crowd to give their caregivers “a baseball roar” which they did. “We love you and we can’t do without you”. “To you survivors, I say laugh a lot, smile a lot, and have faith in your God. Always try to think positive, stay out of negatives corner, keep fighting, keep up the good work and one day we’ll outgrow the pavilion at Lake Park”, said Kirkpatrick as she referenced the survivor’s dinner held a few weeks ago. When you wonder why so many people would give up their scarce and precious time to bake cookies, help out with the many fundraisers, sell candy bars, attend the meetings to be organized for the Relay, and field numerous questions from new team members and volunteers, you only need to talk to Amber Mercer, a member of Team Alana, who participates in the Relay each year to remember her sister, Alana Branstetter. Alana was a loved young woman from our community who lost a courageous fight with cancer in 2006. Amber said, “It’s important to keep the awareness out there. Screening is very important, early detection is always the key and to make

MISS RELAY In another finger nail biting contest for the judges, “Gertrude D. Clow”, aka Ben Doyle, was named the 2013 Miss Relay for Life. “If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right”. Ben said he was going for, “the senile old woman” look. Doyle was a member of the Clow Water Systems Relay for Life team. Doyle said about being involved in the Relay, “It’s just a good thing all around. It’s helping people; it’s in memory of a lot of people. This is about my fifth or sixth Miss Relay contest. Doyle was named “Miss Congeniality” last year and was Miss Relay a few years ago.” Jodi Seibert of Miss Jodi’s Dance was the emcee. “She said, “When they asked me last year, it was just a fluke. Now I’m hooked. It’s the best thing ever. It makes you smile. It gives you a happy thought because of the situation and everyone has to smile when they do it. This year’s contestants were beautiful, just beautiful. Not too shaved, but beautiful nonetheless. I think we were a little lacking in the beauty, but they were gorgeous. They were intelligent, somewhat.” With this year’s winner being perhaps the “oldest” winner ever, Seibert said, “I think this adds a new element. We can still be beautiful and elderly. Just because you’re young, doesn’t mean you’re going to win everything. Maybe the experience won out this year.” BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

people aware that it is possible to detect it. We relay because of my sister, Alana. That’s the reason why we started this team in 2006 and she is the driving force behind it. We also do it for several other people and it’s just a reminder that no one has to be alone. That’s why we’re here. It’s brought us closer as a family.” With a goal of $132,000 to be met by the end of December, the Coshocton County Relay for Life is one of the state’s best. Chelsea Edwards, who is with the Zanesville American Cancer Society office, said, “We certainly had an eventful 24 hours. We raised over $112,000 to fund the fight against cancer. You can’t beat that no matter how you shape it. It’s been a great time, I think everyone had a great time, we had fun. We can’t wait to keep fund-raising and looking forward to next year. I can’t say enough about the volunteers here in Coshocton. They work so hard and truly Relay all year long, every day, all day. I am constantly inspired by their commitment to this cause.” The Keene United Methodist Church raised over $17,000 this year to be the number one team in raising funds, followed by Bears Recognizing Victims. tary School, enjoys petting Tucker, a seven year old miniature horse, who was “visiting” the classroom as part of career week with his certified trainer, Jacqueline Woodward. The visit to Mrs. Katina Wilson’s class is the highlight of career week that the first graders concluded on Friday. Jacqueline is a graduate of The Ohio State University and her website is www.hfhaflingers.com. The kids also got to hear from a school superintendent, a school principal, a radio news reporter, a newspaper reporter, a law enforcement officer, a farmer and other professions during the week. Mrs. Wilson started career week about five years ago and it is now an annual event for the first graders. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FOR-
