COSHOCTON – When most people think of human trafficking, they automatically think of third-world countries. However, this crime has been happening in the United States for many years and has found its way to Ohio, and Coshocton County. Vicki Laudick and Robin Snider of First Step and Leane Rohr of Family and Children First Council has started a coalition to bring awareness to human trafficking and find ways to educate residents about this crime. The group had its first meeting May 18 at COTC to discuss human trafficking in Ohio. The coalition is sponsored by a grant made possible through the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund. Toledo, OH is the fourth-highest city in the United States in human trafficking and it is the second-leading crime in the country. The average age is 13, but girls as young as nine years old are being sold as sex slaves. Sellers, known as Johns, are looking for young, vulnerable women to prey on, and once their trust has been earned, the girls are then sold to buyers, usually rich older men or women. Sellers can make on average $500 - $1,000 a SEE COALITION ON PAGE 21
