MARK FORTUNE This edition of The Beacon comes to you following the Memorial Day holiday – and despite the fact that this issue comes after the speeches, parades, barbeques, picnics and visits to the cemetery, I hope you paused to reflect on the sacrifices that our brave men and women in uniform have made to keep our country free. These past sacrifices – and continuing sacrifices – allow us to watch the baseball games, vote, drive from state to state without any papers save the driver’s license and proof of insurance, talk and write about our elected officials in just about any vein we wish and basically enjoy all that this great country offers. Are we going through some difficult times? Certainly. We have endured tough times before – and much worse times

than we are currently seeing. We are at war, but not a world war. We have high unemployment rates – but not anywhere near the rates during the Great Depression years. Most of us can watch the Cavaliers pound on the Orlando Magic (We hope so!) root our beloved Buckeyes on to victory in the horseshoe – and enjoy a grilled steak or hamburger with a cool beverage of our choosing on a warm summer evening.

Hasn’t the weather during the past couple of weeks been absolutely gorgeous?

Warm, blue skies kissed by the sun and cool evenings with a gentle breeze. Except for fall I am not sure it gets much better than this in Coshocton County.

Speaking of moving forward, the long anticipated access to broadband has arrived! Dorothy Skowrunski, Campus Administrator at the Coshocton Campus of COTC, said in a letter of support to the Coshocton County Commissioners, “As the Campus Administrator for the Coshocton County Campus of Central Ohio Technical College, I strongly support the broadband initiative as it directly relates to the needs of our students in the Coshocton community and their advancement through higher education. Access to high speed internet throughout the county is critical to all residents but especially to students who use the tools and resources available on the worldwide web”. According to the commissioner’s office, broadband access points have been installed on towers in New Castle and Killbuck. Permission has been granted for Conesville and the WOSU tower near River View High School. The commissioners also have pointed out that if you have contacted Lightspeed for broadband access and they are not

able to help you right now – this does not mean that you will not have access in the future. Our county commissioners and others involved with this project deserve to be complimented for being visionary enough to give this effort the legs to help ensure better long-term economic and educational viability of our community.

The theme for this year’s Bible school at Roscoe United Methodist is “Crocodile Dock.”

The fun starts Monday, June 8th and runs through Friday, June 12th, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm each day. Preschoolers will attend Rocky’s Preschool Playhouse. They will join the older kids for opening and closing each day and in between they will enjoy fun age appropriate Bible learning activities, games and snacks. Preschoolers are children four years old and who have not yet attended Kindergarten. Each day they will receive a new buddy and learn the Bible point of

the day. There will be two classes of preschoolers that will be divided by ages after enrollments have been received. “Bayou Crews” are children in Kindergarten through sixth grade (current school year 2008-2009).

The children will have their Bible School program on Sunday, June 14th during the 10:30 am worship service.

Camp Invention coming to Coshocton The Camp Invention® program is coming to Central Elementary School in Coshocton this summer.

Children will learn and apply Newton’s Three Laws of Physics during an innovative program hosted at local schools this summer. At the Camp Invention program, children are challenged with hands-on activities that foster creativity, teamwork, science literacy, and inventive-thinking skills.

The program was created by the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation in 1990, with support from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The top priority of the Camp Invention program is to provide quality enrichment activities for children entering first through sixth grades. An inquiry-based program offered to your local school district, participants’ understanding of science, math, history, and the arts is enhanced as they participate daily in five activityoriented thematic modules.

The program runs for one week from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Each day, up to 110 children rotate between five thematic modules that build upon what was learned the previous day. The program’s integrated curricula align with national and state education standards and are taught by certified teachers from the local community.

The Camp Invention program was featured in the September 2006 issue of Child magazine as a program that fosters the current “hands-on, mindson” philosophy of leading educators. Due to its innovative approach to learning, it has also been highlighted on National Public Radio’s Science Friday and in newspapers, magazines, and educational journals across the

country.

Since its inception, the program has grown to include more than 1,000 sites in 48 states. In 2008, more than 66,000 children participated nationwide. “We’re getting to the root of innovation by providing motivation to learn, create and excel, particularly in the critical areas of math and science,” said Michael J. Oister, president of Invent Now Kids, the subsidiary company that provides education enrichment for the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation.

At the Coshocton program children will not only figure out a way to live on a foreign planet during the Problem Solving on Planet ZAK® module, but also save a polluted city from grown-ups’ neglect in the Saving Sludge City™ module, and create amusement park rides during the Imagination Point: Ride Physics™module.

Each year, every program features the I Can Invent: Complicated Machines & Fantasy Inventions™ module. This module continues to reinvent itself year after year. This summer, younger children will take apart discarded household appliances and create new inventions, while older children will build Rube Goldberg machines. During the Recess Remix™ module, children will put their own spin on classic games of yesteryear.

The Thompsons say they have had some great adventures ballooning and have even made water landings on the Ohio River. Kathy says that many pilots are able to design their balloon envelopes so the artwork and the names of the balloons reflect their owners’ personalities. “We think Shared Magic with its bright colors and sprinkling of stars fits us perfectly,” she said.

Kelly Kendall, Manager of Administration and Office Services at the Frontier Power Company, is pleased that Frontier Power is able to sponsor the Balloon Festival again this year. “We’ve committed to the festival because we feel it’s a wonderful event not only for our community but for the entire State of Ohio,” said Kendall. “We are fortunate that it’s able to remain a free event and it offers something for everyone.”

A full slate of fun and entertainment will also take place over the weekend at the Fairgrounds. Visitors can enjoy midway attractions, craft booths, carnival rides, fireworks, photo contest, kiddie tractor pull, 5K race, flag ceremony, nightglow, musical entertainment, food vendors and many other family-oriented

activities. On Friday night, enjoy free musical entertainment by Timothy Paul from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the fireworks display beginning at 9:15 p.m. Saturday night Phil Dirt and the Dozers will perform from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the popular balloon ‘Night Glow’ will be held at 9:15 p.m.

Balloon launches and fly-ins will take place (weather permitting) on Friday, June 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, June 6, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 7, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Kendall says the employees at Frontier Power help in many ways with the event and truly enjoy the weekend. “We have employees who are balloon chase crew members, some work in the T-shirt tent and I serve as a member of the Balloon Festival Committee,” she said. “We all look forward to this annual festival and are happy that The Frontier Power Company is able to help. Coshocton is very fortunate to have such an event and we hope it continues long into the future.”

Remington says that this is the longest running hot air balloon festival in Ohio and that the balloon pilots love coming to Coshocton. “Hot air balloons have a way of creating happiness and putting a smile on faces,” added Remington. “Plus the event is wonderful for our local tourism.

It brings in hundreds, if not thousands of visitors to Coshocton each year. Many families near and far enjoy taking advantage of this fun, free event.”

Look Up and See the Balloons Next Weekend

ot air balloons will soon be flying over Coshocton County again as the 28th Annual Frontier Power Hot Air Balloon Festival will be held on Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7. Launches and fly-ins will take place at the Fairgrounds.

Admission and entertainment are free.

Carol Remington, Executive Director of the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce says the balloon sponsorships have been wonderful. “So far we have 23 balloons coming to participate,” said Remington.

“And we are so pleased that Frontier Power is our major corporate sponsor again this year. They also donate the propane for the balloons.

ITM Marketing is sponsoring the entertainment, so that is free to attend as well.”

Bill and Kathy Thompson are a husband and wife team who will be returning this year with their balloon Shared Magic. “We fly in about a dozen organized balloon events each year,” said Kathy. “Coshocton is definitely one of our favorites and is just the prettiest place to fly. Everyone in the city is so warm and friendly. Our sponsors are great and we’ve met the most welcoming landowners!”

Both Bill and Kathy are commercially rated pilots although they fly mostly as a hobby. “There are a number of couples who are both balloon pilots,” said Kathy, “however, we’re a little unusual since we make a real effort to take turns flying

The Senior Center in Coshocton celebrated Older American Month with root beer floats, live bluegrass music, good food, good company and a hat contest.

On Tuesday, May 19, the Coshocton Senior Center recognized Older American Month, which is every year in May. Every senior in the Coshocton area were welcome to come and celebrate. Around 10 a.m., guests started arriving and were greeted with a delicious root beer or orange float made fresh in the Senior Citizen kitchen. Upon arrival, everyone was given a ticket for door prizes and also a placemat and a napkin for lunch.

blood pressure checks and blood sugar screenings until noon. Cantwell Creek Garden Center also had flowers for sale and were available to answer any question regarding gardening.

At around 11 a.m., the Jerry Weaver band arrived to perform some old-fashioned music. Mr. Weaver played his banjo with some of his father’s piano recordings.

He led a rousing sing-a-long, which was enjoyed by everyone, and included songs like Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, and The Band Played On. Mr. Weaver also told a few jokes and then ended his performance shortly before noon with a grand finale

“This is in recognition of older Americans,” said senior center director Jamie Thomas, “It’s just getting a group together once a year to have some fun. It’s something our residents here in Coshocton County look forward to every year.”

At noon, Jamie Thomas led the group in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance and then introduced the staff of the Coshocton Senior Center and gave information on upcoming events at the senior center. Afterward, door prizes were drawn and the winners received gift certificates from Buehler’s, Bob Evans Family Restaurant and a free car wash.

After door prizes were awarded, the long-anticipated hat contest began. Prizes were given to the most unique, colorful and craziest hat. Each winner received a small gift bag from Avon.

Maxine Carnahan won for the most unique hat, Hugh Lawlance for the craziest, and Grace Newlun for most colorful.

The day ended with a lunch provided by the senior center.

Coshocton County Youth Leadership (CCYL) held a graduation reception on April 15, 2009 in the Grace United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall to honor the Class of 2009, the 15th class to graduation from CCYL. Joy Padgett gave the keynote address.

Gordon Spillman, chair of the Leadership Coshocton County Board of Directors, presented a certificate of graduation plaque to each class member. Participants in the Class of 2009 include: Lila Borton - Coshocton; Brooke Bookless - River View; Kyle Bradford - Ridgewood; Kimberyl Croft - River View; Kayla Finton - Ridgewood; Andrew Frank - Coshocton; Andrew Gates - Ridgewood; Joel Hamric - River View; Kimberly Michael - Ridgewood; Meghann Shalosky - Ridgewood; Sarah Sheldon - Coshocton; Ted Shipitalo - River View; Ryan Shutt -

Coshocton; and Brianna Stevens - River View.

Coshocton County Youth Leadership, a Coshocton Foundation program, provided a basic foundation of leadership skills for these high school juniors to build upon.

It assisted in the development of communication skills and presented an opportunity to interact with community leaders and fellow participants. Though this experience CCYL participants gained an awareness of Coshocton County’s resources, challenges and opportunities. CCYL began in July with a two-day retreat followed by eight monthly half-day sessions. This program receives financial support from the Coshocton Foundation, the Coshocton Kiwanis Foundation, Coshocton Rotary, Endsley Insurance Agency, Coshocton Grain Company and numerous individual donors.

Insource Resource Outsource Garden Contributes to Community L. Wilson, director of community service projects, and the brainchild behind the “Insource Resource Outsource Garden”, recently invited local officials to this community project that is located in the community garden near the former Family Physicians office on Browns Lane. Coshocton Mayor Steve Mercer said of the project, “For citizens to take the initiative to help both the city and the county is a great asset that will benefit our community. We bridged the gap to-

day”. L. Wilson stated that, “the workers are appointed through the courts. We are raising green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, leaf lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets and later this summer we will be planting watermelon and cantaloupe. We received contributions of seed from Cantwell Creek, Emerson Gardens and The Garden Patch. County Commissioner D. Curtis Lee was on hand for the ceremony and commented, “It’s great that she is using local citizens to help feed

people at the jail – and also providing these people with some self-esteem and life skills”. L. Wilson added, “This will help save money for the taxpayers as we feed the inmates. It was Irene Miller’s idea to utilize the garden for community service workers.

This project not only helps save money in our community but it also provides something worthwhile for and provides a sense of accomplishment for these workers”.

Donna Douglas, perhaps more widely known from her role of many years as “Elly Mae Clampett”, on The Beverly Hillbillies from 1962 to 1971 – was in town a week and a half ago speaking at both the Coshocton and River View Baccalaureate service.

Ron Davis said, “We’re so thankful that we can have this kind of service here”.

Gideon’s presented a new testament to any graduating senior that chose to have one. Douglas told the gathered seniors and guests at both services that, “There’s no one like you!

New York City. Douglas never compromised her position or her moral values, and has reaped the rewards of standing her ground throughout a long career. Douglas also told the seniors that they need to, “Go to those Grandma’s and Grandpa’s for advice.

The word of God is your handbook. When you can’t see around the corner, you stand on character. Remember that God can see further down the road than you can!”

As far as landing her role on The Beverly Hillbillies, Douglas simply said that, “It was God’s time. Elly Mae didn’t get kissed by a lot of guys but she got kissed by a lot of critters”.

The show ran for nine years in primetime, and was either first, second or third in the ratings for all nine years. In conclusion, Douglas reinforced her message of faith, optimism and down-home humor by telling the graduates that’s “Nobody can hold you back but you!”

Scott Poland, senior class president at River View, said of the class of 2009 that, “We’re a close knit group and we accept each other and the differences in ourselves”. As far as Douglas’ talk, Poland stated that, “She was really good – and has seen the world – she offered a lot of life experience. It gives us a lot of motivation – to know that we can do great things with our life”. Poland said that his favorite memory during his high school experience was getting to lead the soccer team back to the regional finals for the second year as a captain.

Mechanical Music Machines with Dick Hoover Riverside Manor It’s one thing to marvel at spring-driven, pocket-sized phonographs, ornamental calliope music boxes, and a 20-inch diameter petuniashaped horn, but it’s another to hear these mechanical music machines play music.

You will have your chance to do just that at 2:00 on any Sunday afternoon in June at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum. Dick Hoover, mechanical machine enthusiast, will explain and demonstrate a selection of the machines.

Before electricity powered our toys and machines, people who wanted to listen to music in their homes relied on hand-powered devices such as phonographs, organettes and music boxes.

Play it again, Sam!, a temporary exhibit of mechanical music machines originating from the late 19th to early 20th century, is currently on display at the museum.

Included in this display are music boxes—some small enough to fit in the hand, while others definitely fit

4-H Public Speaking Event. On May 28th 4-H members will have the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills by participating in the 4-H Health and Safety Speaking, 4-H Topic, or 4-H Living History/Horse Speaking Contests.

Informational Meeting. Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church will offer an informational meeting concerning the Great Food For All program at their facility on Saturday, June 6 at 8:30am. Non-profit groups and representatives of area churches, especially, are encouraged to come to learn more about the program, which is being hosted at the church located at 45494 C.R. 23, Coshocton. Representatives of the Great Food For All program will be on hand to discuss the impact that this ministry is having in local communities. “This nondenominational ministry reaches folks in local communities with good food at great prices, operating as the hands of Jesus through groups and churches,” says Pastor Everett

After Rachel Lozowski has established her flock of Shetlands, she will be encouraged to pay back to the Youth Conservationist Program by donating a ewe to another youth. Already several recipients have donated back to the program, assisting other youth to fulfill their dreams of owning a flock of Heritage Sheep.

The Youth Conservationist Program has just finished its 11th year, and has awarded ewes to well over 125 young shepherds.
