CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY EMILY ADAMS COSHOCTON - Lawrence E. Sarbaugh was the first 4-H agent hired in Coshocton County in 1946. Up until that time, the agriculture and home demonstration agents worked with both youth and adults in their programming. Following Sarbaugh there were seven other 4-H agents in this time period. The agents were: Roger L. Lawrence (1949-1950), Joseph H. Brooks (1950-52), S.P. “Fred” Bruny (1952-54), J. Orville Nicholson (1954-56), Lowell H. Reed (1956-59), David R. Miskell (1959-63), and T. Roy Bogle (1963-66). 4-H members were elementary school through high school age. During the 1940s and 1950s there was also a program for college and post high school students called the County Older Rural Youth Program. By 1940 there were more than 100 different 4-H projects offered. Some of these projects included: Vegetable Gardening for Beginners, Let’s Tailor, Baking for Victory (part of the Ohio 4-H Wartime program), Market Pig, and Salads, Sandwiches & Summer Drinks. The most popular projects in 1940 were clothing for girls and dairy for agriculture projects. In the 1950s some new projects included Farm Electricity, Undergarments for the Well-Dressed 4-H Club Girl, Our Insects and Their Kin, Outdoor Cookery and Teenage Talkover. It was in 1954 that Governor Lausche turned the ceremonial shovel for the Youth Center. This center provided overnight housing for 1,100 youth, a cafeteria and an auditorium with a capacity of 3,000. Many 4-H members from Coshocton County have earned the opportunity to take their 4-H projects to the Ohio State Fair in that building. Also members of the Coshocton County 4-H Junior Leadership Club no doubt have memories of staying in the Youth Center during the annual “Columbus Trip.” The International Farm Youth Exchange program (IFYE) was the first 4-H international program. Ohio began sending 4-H delegates to other countries in 1950. Between 1950 and 1959, 59 Ohio 4-H members traveled to 35 different countries. The 4-H members lived with host families and stayed in the host country for several months. The 50th anniversary of 4-H was celebrated in 1952. A commemorative stamp was issued for the special occasion. More than 400,000 stamps received first-day cancellations from the Springfield, Ohio Post Office (birthplace of 4-H) which was the largest one-day stamp sale in the history of Springfield. Emily G. Adams is the OSU Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources County Extension Director for Coshocton County.

Celebrate Father’s Day at the Fresno market CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY JULIA BROWN

FRESNO - Dear Old Dad - Happy Father’s Day! You are the fixer of broken bike chains, the killer of big hairy spiders, the “yes” man when Mom says “no,” the buyer of ice cream before dinner and the mender of first date broken hearts. For all of these reasons and many more, we salute and celebrate your special day! We invite you out to the Fresno Farmers’ Market for some excellent “farm to table” shopping and a free cup of Joe, your vendors will having everything to make Dad’s special day even better. Homemade fruit pies, angel food cakes, cookies, homemade noodles and breads, large brown eggs, fresh whole broiling chickens, locally grown produce like: Strawberries, lettuce, cucumbers, onions, radishes, rhubarb, cabbages and much more. One of the awesome things about the Fresno Market is the diverse array of generations and backgrounds that make up our vendors. At one end you have the young teenager from Turkey Hill Farm selling his eggs and chickens, on the other end you have growers well into their 70s setting up produce displays and somewhere in the middle you have the young Amish girls helping their Mother bake pies and cakes. We definitely are an eclectic group of individuals. But the one thing we share as a whole is our desire to bring the “farm to your families table” each week. As we honor and celebrate Dad this weekend, I also want to thank all of the producers, growers, farmers and bakers that make it possible for the rest of us to enjoy quality, wholesome and nutritious foods. The Fresno Market is open every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon in downtown Fresno at McCoy’s Auto Service, signs are posted. For more information you can call 545-0849 or 545-0997. Here is a recipe that’s sure to make Dad smile: Beer Can Up The Chicken’s .........(well you know) 1 whole fresh roasting chicken 1 can of beer 1 small onion Sprig of fresh rosemary Sprig of fresh thyme Olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Rinse bird well and pat dry, oil him up and season skin with salt and pepper. Discard or pour out half of the beer from the can or (just drink it - waste not want not) Insert the can into the part of the bird that went over the fence last. (You can buy a special holder for this recipe at Wal-Mart) Stuff the herbs and the onion in the other end. Sit beer can holder on BBQ grill on a medium flame with the lid closed - roasting time will vary depending of the size of your bird. Cook until skin is golden and juices run clear. This is one of the moist and flavorful chickens you’ll ever eat, not to mention crazy.

BY JOSIE SELLERS Harrah said. “That’s quite a bit of food. Every year our collection gets bigger and bigger. The evening also will feature a 50/50 drawing and t-shirts for sale. “A girlfriend of mine is designing the t-shirts and they look pretty cool,” Harrah said. Local artists and crafters and high school booster clubs are invited to setup booths. Harrah also welcomes more food vendors as long as they have a vendors’ license. “This is a nice safe family event,” Harrah said. “It’s good, clean fun like we used to have in high school.” Most of the people who attend graduated in the 50s, 60s, or 70s, but the Main Street Cruz is really open to anyone. “If you didn’t cruise in high school come learn how to cruise,” Harrah said. “You also don’t have to have a classic car to come. As long as it had gas in it and the doors opened we’d cruise in it.” Anyone who has questions about the Main Street Cruz or wants more information on setting up a booth can contact Harrah at 614-301-9473, harrahm@att.net or by looking up Main Street Cruz on Facebook. “There is no charge to setup,” Harrah said. “I’m all about promoting the community.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – What started out as a trip down memory lane between friends has become an event for the whole community to enjoy. “I asked my girlfriends if they wanted to cruise Main Street like we used to,” said Holly Harrah, who graduated from River View High School in 1978 and is the coordinator of the Main Street Cruz. “They said, ‘Sure we’d love to,’ and it ended up turning into a benefit for the community.” The third annual Main Street Cruz will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, June 21, on the courthouse square in downtown Coshocton. “Back in the 70s it used to take two hours to get up and down Main Street,” Harrah said. “It took at least an hour to go up the street and then you’d turn around at the library and come back down. It was the placed to be seen.” The Main Street Cruz will give people a chance to reminisce about high school and the way Main Street used to be while enjoying food, games, oldies music and cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s. There also will be a competition between River View, Coshocton and Ridgewood graduates to see which school can collect the most canned goods. “River View has won the competition hands down the last two years,” Harrah said. “I put a big challenge out there to Coshocton and Ridgewood. Beating River View is going to be a challenge though.” The donated food will be divided between local food banks at Shepherd’s Christian Assembly and New Life Ministries. “We filled one bed of a pickup truck with what we collected (at the event last year),”

COSHOCTON – The Elks 376 feels for the local children and families who have had to use Nationwide Children’s Hospital and wanted to do their part to help. “RD Promotions raises money for the hospital, specifically for the emergency room and cancer department, which are the two areas most frequented by our community,” said Davonna Markley, office manager at the Elks. “This is a cause we wanted to be involved in because any parent who has had a child at Children’s can sympathize with the children and families there and the need for funds to make their stay as comfortable as possible.” To help do that, the Elks decided to host a community barbeque Saturday, June 14, at the lodge at 434 Chestnut St. All activities will be outside in the back parking lot. Food will be served from 2 to 7 p.m., with a chicken dinner costing $8 and hamburger or hotdog meals being $5. There also will be a hotdog eating contest at 2:30 p.m., open mic/DJ services provided by RD Promotions, emergency vehicles on display such as the MRAP, fire trucks and ambulances, jail house and bake sale. There also will be a dunk tank with community celebrities Deputy Dave Stone, Jerry Stenner and Zach Bush, from Rent to Own, which is sponsoring the hotdog eating contest. “The jail house is fun,” Markley said. “You

They are very high energy and a lot of fun. They are perfect for this.” There also will be raffles and 50/50s. “It is a community event and open to families,” Markley said. “Bring your kids and have fun.” She also is very appreciative of the community’s support for this event. “We’ve had a great response from different area business owners and our members for donations to help make this happen,” Markley said. JUNE 14TH, 1964 Buckeyes Motor Inc. of Coshocton was celebrating their silver anniversary. The history of the auto sales and service organization goes back to June 1939 when Garney Banahan, president, and the late Jack Raber formed a partnership and purchased a Dodge and Plymouth agency. The two men ran the business until 1942 when both men entered the service. Upon returning home, the two partners took up their Dodge and Plymouth agency. In the fall of 1954, the two took over the local Ford agency, but continued to run their Dodge and Plymouth agency until it was surrendered in 1955. The men continued their joint partnership until Raber’s death.

BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – The 40th consecutive Coshocton Dulcimer Days promises to be filled with old-fashioned entertainment, educational opportunities, and a chance to see and hear previous national dulcimer contest winners. This year’s festival is back in its original home in Roscoe Village for the third year and will be June 13 – 15. The festival begins Friday at 1 p.m. with a variety of workshops at Central Ohio Technical College. Six workshops will be presented from 1 – 2 p.m., 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., and 4 – 5 p.m. on Friday. Instructors will include headliners Stephen Seifert, Cathy Barton and Dave Para, as well as Bing Futch, David and Annette Lindsey, Jan Hammond, Paul Conrad, Nathaniel Samsel, Mark Wade, and many others. Each workshop is $15 and there are beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. Tickets can be picked up at the central registration table near the Warehouse Restaurant or at the information table at COTC. “People come for the workshops,” said Louise Cardenzana. “That’s the only thing we charge for during the festival, so the workshops are very important.” Relax in the Warehouse Courtyard and listen to the mini-concerts from 5:30 – 7:45 p.m. The day will end with a jam session in the COTC parlor from 8 – 10 p.m. Workshops continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at COTC. Mini-concerts will also be in the Warehouse Courtyard from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. which will feature two vendors and winners from the 2013 National Championship, Nate Pultorak and Nathaniel Samsel. Pultorak placed third on the hammered dulcimer and Samsel placed second on the mountain dulcimer. Make sure to also check out jam sessions happening all day throughout the village. Saturday will conclude with the headliner concert at Roscoe United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. featuring Seifert, Barton, and Para. “At the concert on Saturday night, we have a good group of local people and it’s free,” said Cardenzana. “We pay our performers through very generous people in the community.” Sunday begins with a brunch at the Warehouse Restaurant at 9:30 a.m. with a gospel sing to follow. After the gospel sing, there will be the duet competition and the Mid-East Regional Dulcimer Championships at noon on the Main Stage in the Village. The Dulcimer Days Festival is an accredited site for the Mid-East Regional Dulcimer Championships, and winners go on to compete at nationals. The Dulcimer Days will also feature five items for raffle. David and Annette Lindsey are donating a hammered dulcimer to be raffled. Paul Conrad is donating one of his mountain dulcimer, Terry Kirby is giving a bowed psaltery to be raffled, and Wildwood Music is donating a Larivee D-02 guitar. Jan Myers at the Coshocton Visitor’s Bureau is donating a selection of Coshocton County wines. Tickets are available at the information table at the festival and are $1 for one, six for $5 and 13 for $10. “The dulcimer is associated with old time and Appalachian music and people who come are people who come for love of the instrument,” said Cardenzana. “They spend a lot of money on these instruments and they just love them. It’s a tight-knit community. You can sit down with these instruments and very quickly, play music, and it’s also the opportunity to play with other people.” For more information on Dulcimer Days, visit www. coshoctondulcimerdays.com. Former preachers also were invited to attend and share their memories. “I was here two years and they were the best two years of my life,” said Kevin Jarrells, who once preached at the church. If someone has lost someone to suicide, talk to them. A lot of people want to talk about their family member.” The coalition also had its second annual butterfly release to end the event. REPUBLIC COVIC Chris Covic started waxing cars in the driveway of his mom and dad’s house when he was 14-years-old. That eventually grew to a family business, which has been in Coshocton for more than 30 years, and is owned by Covic and his wife Pam. In January of this year, Covic bought the former Coshocton Glass Business and has recently developed a drive-thru car wash. They had an open house on Saturday, June 7, with refreshments and memorabilia. The business employs 15 people. “I have great staff here,” said Covic. “I I couldn’t do this without the staff.” The business also has an air conditioned waiting area with a television and coffee. In 2007, the company bought Republic Industrial Maintenance Supply and they sell the supplies they use. They also offer a janitorial and carpet cleaning service for commercial and residential. AAA9 receives grant to help low-income seniors CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON - Many seniors struggle to pay their Medicare premiums, deductibles and co-pays; still many aren’t aware that they may qualify for help in covering those expenses. The Area Agency on Aging Region 9 (AAA9) received a grant from the Ohio Department of Aging to help older adults apply for extra help through Social Security’s Extra Help Program. The grant is part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA). Couples and individuals can have a significant income and assets and still be eligible for help. The yearly income limit for an individual $17,235; for a married couple it is $23,265. Resource limit for an individual is $13,300; for a married couple living together it is $26,580. By applying for these benefits, seniors may qualify for significant savings with their Medicare Part D premiums, deductibles and co-pays. Additionally, Medicare covers an extensive range of services to prevent, detect, and manage diseases so complications can be avoided. It is important to utilize Medicare preventative services and screenings to ensure a healthier and longer life. Further information regarding preventative and wellness benefits can be viewed on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid website. The grant concludes at the end of September 2014, and the Social Security Administration indicates that many older adults who are eligible for the program have not yet applied. For an application or to speak with someone about the assistance please contact AAA9 at 800-945-4250 or locally at 740-435-4904. There is no cost to apply. For further information about the Area Agency on Aging Region 9, Inc. and the programs offered, call toll-free 800-945-4250 or visit their website at http://www.aaa9.org.

COSHOCTON – The third annual Indian Mud Run promises to be a muddy and fun time. “Every year we asked people what they think we can do better and we go by those reviews to improve the race,” said Hubie Cushman, event coordinator. “The big thing people asked for was more mud so this year our goal is to have four different mud pits. People are going to get muddy early and often.” The Indian Mud Run will be held Saturday, June 21, at Lake Park. “It’s an obstacle course race that takes you through mud,” Cushman said. “The whole idea is to get out, get dirty and have fun. We are still working on a couple of obstacles, but we are going to have over 30. A couple of them are part of the trail but we consider them obstacle.” One of the most popular obstacles is the water slide, but he also has heard great feedback about the monkey bars over the canal and the climbing wall. People also have fun with the water blob pillow and Cushman said this year they also will get to experience zorb balls, which are inflatable beach balls that people climb inside of.

“I think what makes our race standout though is the terrain and our natural obstacles,” Cushman said. “We get a lot of comments about that and the views.” The Indian Mud Run also features a kids’ course. “We kind of pushed it this year,” Cushman said. “We are getting a lot of feedback from people out of town who want to bring their kids. Chris Spielman (who played football for OSU and professionally) even came last year with his daughters for it.” He also believes the t-shirts are helping make the Indian Mud Run popular. “We are getting the word out about our run,” Cushman said. “A guy from Buffalo, N.Y. messaged me and he’s done over 40 mud runs. He was looking for different mud runs and ours came up as a good one to do. He’s driving over eight hours just to do this mud run and that makes me feel good. We set up the shirt so the top placers names are on it and that is starting to pay off. We are getting the diehards like this guy who want their names on the shirt. I think it’s going to get more competitive.” Last year there was room to basically put the names of everybody who did the race on the shirts, but this year they will only have the top finishers in each age group. The registration deadline to guarantee receiving a t-shirt has passed, but Cushman said there is still a chance of getting one if you register

BY JOSIE SELLERS ASAP. If they run out of t-shirts they will start handing out last year’s to racers. Medals also are handed out to finishers. “I don’t know for sure how many people we will have because we expect to get a lot of late entries,” Cushman said. “I’m guessing there will be close to 800 and most likely more than that. Last year we had two sold out waves and we have four sold out already. I expect we will end up with six or eight sold out.” The race has 17 waves with the first one starting at 8 a.m. and the last one heading out at 4 p.m. People can register and look at wave times by visiting www.indianmudrun.com. Cushman started the Indian Mud Run as a way to help the Coshocton Park District, but now also donates proceeds to any volunteer fire department, REACT and sheriff auxiliary organizations that help on race day. “Last year we broke even because we expected a better turnout, but there are so many expenses we had last year that we don’t this year so we are expecting to do really well,” he said. The event also has the help of corporate sponsor Wiley Organics. “I can’t say enough about how good they’ve been with not only promoting the race, but helping us get it up and running,” Cushman said. “They’ve been great.” Volunteers are still needed to help put finishing touches on the course and help on race day. Anyone interested in lending a hand is welcome to contact Cushman at 502-5013 or hubie3@roadrunner.com. “We have people coming from all over the state and five different states,” Cushman said. “I want people to walk away impressed with the race and the community.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Balloon festival packed with entertainment

Safety Saturday teaches kids about emergency vehicles SAFETY SATURDAY Will Baldwin, 5-years-old of Zanesville, enjoyed climbing up in the fire truck at Safety Saturday, which was at the Balloon Festival on Saturday, June 7. The goal of Safety Saturday was to get kids familiar with emergency vehicles and personnel and to teach them to stay away from streets if they hear an emergency vehicle coming toward them. special something’ about getting to return to my hometown that makes that day (and show) one that I know, I will treasure forever.” Like, McVay, Peck also believes it is the people of Coshocton that make it special. “I believe that the ‘extra special something’ is really all of the great people within the community. And so many friends, family members, and familiar faces, who have always believed in me, showing me such amazing support throughout my career. I love you all so much.” Several area companies helped sponsor the entertainment at this year’s festival. Jeff Drennen Dealerships was responsible for Peck’s concert and the sales staff from there had the opportunity to go on stage with her and accept an autographed guitar. The festival also couldn’t have been possible without the dedicated committee who helped organize it. “We have a very faithful committee that sticks together,” Kendall said. “Everyone knows their jobs and they do them.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

It was a center point in Ohio for a lot of them to come out to.” Another act with Coshocton roots was Timothy Paul (McVay), who was born and raised in Coshocton. “I enjoy the people here,” said McVay, who played Saturday, June 7. “There is nothing else like Coshocton County. The community supports each other and comes together when needed. I couldn’t pass up coming here when I was asked to.” The entertainment at the festival wrapped up with a performance by Danielle Peck, who also is from Coshocton. “It’s an honor to be performing for the 33rd Annual Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival,” she said. “I am so thankful, and feel extremely blessed to get to do what I love so much, as my job. COSHOCTON – Unbelievable. That’s how Kelly Kendall explained the experience of flying in a hot air balloon. “It’s calm, peaceful and quiet,” she said. “You can hear everything on the ground.” Kendall is the manager of administration and office services at The Frontier Power Company, which presented the 2014 Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival, June 5-7, at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. She also serves on the committee of community members that helped organize the event. “We (at Frontier Power) are fortunate that we are in the position to do this for the community,” she said. “There’s free admission, free parking and free entertainment. You didn’t have to spend a penny if you didn’t want to. It’s a family event and we definitely wanted to see it continue.” In addition to hot air balloon launches the festival also featured a midway with games, rides and food stands and nightly entertainment.

that would have a lot of public viewing,” Beall said. “They then had to do a PowerPoint presentation for Mr. (Grant) Fauver (CHS’s principal). They learned how to work with their client and meet their needs.” The mural is made up of three separate panels and has a theme of school pride. The center panel has the Redskin mascot, whose pride is so intense that it knocks down the brick wall he is standing behind. Pieces of the brick wall are flying off to create a 3-D effect and each brick represents a different subject taught at the school. The left side of the panel says CHS and the right says PRIDE, which the class used to spell out, “Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Enthusiasm.” “I think this gives community members who come in and the students more pride in our building,” Fauver said. The students who worked on the project were: 2014 graduates - Josh Hilgenberg, Jessica

COSHOCTON – Coshocton High School students have a lot to be proud of and that can now be seen in a new mural in the cafeteria. The 13 feet wide and four feet high mural was created by students in Myrtle Beall’s visual communications class and was unveiled during a special ceremony June 4. “They worked really hard on this,” she said. “It was a long process, but they learned to work together as a team.” The 10 students in the class also learned how to present a project to a client. “We toured the building and found a place

Nemeth, Phoenix Troendly, Kelsey Wilson; seniors – Keeley Misener, Morgan Unger, Kristina Vickers; and juniors Kristin Baker, Courtney Nutter and Phillip Scott. Each of them was assigned one of the featured bricks in the mural to design and tried to make sure they represented what is available at the school. “My first thought was to go to each of the history teachers and ask them what their favorite thing to teach was,” Unger said. In addition to history, the bricks also represent: Art, sports, technology, math, foreign language, literature, science, family and consumer science and there also was a drama and music one. “It feels good to know that I did this,” said Troendly, who graduated this year. She and Wilson, who also graduated, were both excited to know that CHS students will be seeing their work for years to come and they will be able to tell younger relatives that they helped create it. Scott, who will be a junior, also is excited to see the project completed. “It feels pretty amazing,” he said. “We spent almost the whole second semester doing this. I learned that it’s always great to work with a team and when you work hard on something it will turn out for the good.” Beall has taught the visual communications class for about 20 years. They used to work on projects in her room, but about three years ago they had to expand outside of it and she is very happy with this year’s project. “School pride is not just about sports,” Beall said. “Each one of the bricks on this mural represents an area of the school we can be proud of.” Fauver also was impressed. “I love seeing these projects,” he said. “Thank you for what you did. You guys should be proud.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
