Stockdale, who was hired by the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and started work June 18, replaces Carol Remington who retired June 15.

She has vast experience working with a variety of local businesses inside and outside of Coshocton County. She also brings experience in areas such as fundraising, event planning, marketing and communications as well as a desire to keep Coshocton a thriving community.

“I love Coshocton,” Stockdale said. “There are great people, good schools and it’s a very caring community.”

Board president Amy Hasseman believes Stockdale will be a great asset to the Chamber.

“As a life-long resident of our community, she understands how important it is for our Chamber to be a strong and vital partner to area businesses,” Hasseman said.

The mission for the Coshocton County Chamber is to promote a partnership of business, professional and community leaders working together to advance business success, economic development, and employment opportunities in our community.

“I’m interested in finding out what the businesses and the board are looking for from the Chamber,” Stockdale said. “The businesses are members of the Chamber and I want to know what their needs are.”

The Chamber is dedicated to accomplishing its mission by being a strong advocate and excellent resource on issues important to our area businesses. Its vision is for a prosperous community blessed with sustained economic growth and increased employment opportunities for all.

The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission’s Summer Crisis Program is underway. This program, funded through the Ohio Department of Development, Office of Community Assistance, will assist households with a resident age 60 and older or those with a household member with a qualifying medical condition or a household with a disconnect on their electric bill or are already disconnected.

In addition air conditioners may be available to qualifying households.

The maximum benefit amount is up to $250 applied as payment to the household’s electric bill. The cost of the air conditioner must be factored in and cannot exceed the maximum total benefit after paying the electric bill for those households seeking them.

Income guidelines are based at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and are as follows: Household size of one may earn up to $22,340, household of two $30,260, household of three $38,180, household of four $46,100, household of five $54,020 and household of six $61,940.

Income can also be calculated using the past three months, whichever benefits the client.

Other documentation is also required.

The program will operate June 1 – Aug. 31, 2012 or until funds are depleted, whichever occurs first. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, phone the Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland CAC office at 622-9801.

The six-session video-discussion program will be on Wednesdays, beginning July 11, from 10 a.m. - Noon through Aug. 15, at The Mentoring Center , located at 410 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Coshocton.

“We are proud to offer Active Parenting Now to the parents in our community,” said Sheila Mayse, Executive Director of The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County. “This program combines entertaining videos and discussion to help parents learn how to raise children who are cooperative, responsible and able to resist peer pressure. It also guides parents in dealing with sensitive issues such as drugs, sexuality and violence.”

Warsaw Class of 1962 unites

REUNION The 50th reunion of the Warsaw Class of 1962 met at the Warsaw Fire Station after the Warsaw Alumni Banquet on May 19. Fifteen classmates attended out of 26 original graduates. Six classmates are deceased. Classmate Bob Arnold traveled from Sanford, FL for his 50th reunion. The class of 1962 is the first graduating Warsaw class to give a scholarship to a River View High School graduating senior. They gave $1,275 to a senior that went to Warsaw Elementary School. On Sunday morning, 11 of the classmates went to Gospel Hill together. There are some new faces leading youth at Coshocton Church of the Nazarene.

Trevor Lanz and James Rose both started their new positions on June 1. Lanz is the new children’s pastor and Rose is the youth pastor.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the kids, the people and the church,” Rose said.

Rose is a graduate of River View High School and Lanz is from Point Pleasant, W.Va. “I had been working in Powell and commuting so when this youth job became available I sent my resume and it all worked out,” Rose said. “Now my commute is less than five minutes.”

Lanz was planning on going to graduate school, but when he was told about the job opening in Coshocton, his plans changed.

“Everything unfolded and fell into place,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going to camp, Vacation Bible School and the school year starting. Since its summer, there is kind of a break in our activity.”

Rose also hopes to do some work with the schools and develop adult leadership with the youth.

“I want them to take their faith past high school graduation,” Rose said. “So many times teens and young adults leave the church or question their faith once they graduate. I want to give them a firm foundation and help them understand their faith so they continue to grow.”

Lanz also hopes he can help the children at the church and their families.

“I don’t want it to be just about the children,” he said. “I want it to be about them and their families. I want to give them the resources to get connected.”

Lanz will lead children under seventh grade and Rose will be in charge of the seventh through 12th graders.

Grandma Edna’s Spiced Christmas Beets

Bring beets to boil until fork tender, drain and peel skins. Cut into chunks or leave whole if small enough, place into 6 sterilized pint canning jars. Bring vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and all spice to a rolling boil. Pour hot liquid over beets; add one cinnamon stick, 2 cloves and 1 lemon slice to each jar. Seal jars as normal. (Grandma called these her “Christmas Beets” because we all got 1 jar as part of our Christmas present every year). Mine are good, but I still wish I got a jar from her instead!

Many of us don’t remember the “Victory Garden”, myself included or even know what was for that matter. Well lucky for you all, I’m about to enlighten you on the subject of the time-honored “Victory Garden”. During WWII, the US Government asked Americans to tighten their belts and plant vegetable gardens to help support the war effort. Wow, did the American public ever respond. In 1943, more than 24 million tons of produce was grown in backyards, neighborhoods and on farms across this great land of ours. Not only did these “Victory Gardens” help to support our forces, they also boosted the American spirit. The vendors at the Fresno Farmers’ Market are capable of not only boosting our spirits now in 2012, but are willing and eager to bring the “farm to your family’s table” with the same desire to produce quality healthful foods at a value that everyone can afford, just like Americans have been doing for decades.

The “Victory Gardens” not only produced great vegetables, they taught us economical principles, food value, and preparation, as well as freedom from processed foods and preservatives. Plus, it’s just plain fun to play in the dirt! in her decision to study nursing at COTC. She earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in nursing from COTC in 1994 and became a registered nurse. Nixon was promoted to Unit Manager and then to Director of Nursing, a role she has had since 2007.

She is responsible for staffing and compliance needs for the diverse populations her institution serves, including rehabilitation, long-term care, and hospice patients. Nixon participates yearly in the American Heart Association Walk, Pink Strides Wellness Walk for Breast Cancer, and the Arthritis Association’s Arthritis Walk. She was the recipient of the 2002 Hospice of Central Ohio’s Compassionate Care Partner’s Award.

She was nominated for the award by Betsy McPherson, Admissions and Marketing Director at the Arlington Care Center.

June 22nd, 1952 The Board of Education made a hard decision when it was decided to close Bancroft School to students and teachers forever due to the decreasing number of students enrolling in the school each fall and the health hazards the building presented. Supt. G.A. McConagha informed the board that for the 1952-53 school year, the number of students enrolled in the school would be below 50 and most present at the meeting agreed that less than 50 students wasn’t enough to keep the school open. When all Bancroft students were located on a map, it was discovered that they could easily attend other schools.

June 25th, 1962 Despite the threat of rain and cancellation of the event, over 2,000 spectators came out to Walnut Street Hill to watch 15-yearold Bill McClister win the 25th Soap Box Derby. Streaking across the finish line in his revamped low-slung black racer, Bill would represent Coshocton in Akron during the All-American Derby in August where he would compete for $30,000 in scholarships. In Coshocton, Bill received a $500 savings bond and a trophy. All other awards to participants were presented at a dinner later that night.

Bill’s ambition was to study engineering at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland.

Kids America team finishes second

June 21st, 1972 The lost arts of the past such as shingle splitting, broom making, and throwing pots was to be revitalized in Roscoe Village for summer entertainment. The program, headed by former art teacher Rollin France, would also include needlework, hand spinning, and other arts. Costumed hostesses and craftsmen demonstrated the old crafts using original tools and implements. Many of their items would then be sold to visitors. France taught the crafts to the hostesses and hoped to open a class for the public in the fall.

June 22nd, 1982 In addition to the Queens contest in the West Lafayette Homecoming Festival, the Chamber of Commerce had planned activities for the public to enjoy for the whole weekend. The theme was “American Landmarks” and the festival would kick off with a parade which would feature every type of entertainment from bikes, wagons and ponies, to antique cars and fire trucks. A barbeque was also planned with Don Jackson making his famous secret chicken barbeque recipe and would be cooking 650 chicken halves. Music would be provided by Donnie McVay and His Country Gentlemen, and Junior and the County Echoes.

This isn’t the first time Coshocton Hospital and Genesis have worked closely together. Nine years ago, Coshocton Hospital had seen an overwhelming amount of patients who were in need of a sleep lab. They formed a venture with Genesis and they were able to help Coshocton begin their own sleep lab locally.

“Our goal every day is to strive to be better today than we were yesterday,” said Miller.

Miller, current CEO of Coshocton Hospital, will become employed by the Genesis management company. Coshocton Hospital’s chief financial officer position will be filled and the person in this role will also be part of the management company.

More information about this agreement between Coshocton Hospital and Genesis HealthCare System will be available within the next couple of months.

In the past five years, Coshocton Hospital has been losing money. Within the last year, less money has been flowing into the hospital while more money has been going out. Money in their savings was becoming less and less, and their choice was to either cut services or do something different. Signing with Genesis allows them to not only improve their health care and services, but also to gain $5 million in credit, which will help stabilize their cash flow crisis.

Sacred Heart has egg drop

Sacred Heart Schools had an egg drop on May 22 for all of the students in kindergarten through sixth grade. A group project was constructed by each grade from kindergarten through second grades, and individual projects were done in grades three through six. The students constructed containers in which their uncooked eggs were placed and then dropped from the hook and ladder fire truck.

The project was postponed from the day before due to a fire. Most of the eggs were unbroken after being dropped from the ladder.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and contraception.

The rule is set to take effect Wednesday, Aug. 1. Non-profit religious employers that do not now provide such coverage, and are not exempt under the rule’s extremely narrow definition of religious employer, will be given one year—until Aug. 1, 2013—to comply. The Administration’s Feb. 10 “accommodation” still forces objecting organizations and individuals to pay for “services” that violate their religious convictions.

In addition to the HHS mandate, the United States Catholic bishops have also recognized that religious liberty is being threatened in other areas such as state immigration laws and attempts to alter Church structure and governance at home and abroad. This is a serious threat to all religious liberty, not just the Catholic tradition.

The U.S. bishops have called for a Fortnight for Freedom that takes place from Thursday, June 21 to Wednesday, July 4. Sacred Heart Church, in union with the U.S. bishops, will participate in this two-week prayer by celebrating a special evening prayer liturgy that we will pray every evening of this fortnight. It is a scripturally based structured liturgical prayer, consisting of psalms of lament, canticles and responses that invite participation from those who attend.

Jack Baumgardener touched the lives of many residents in Coshocton. Being very active in his community, Jack was President of the local Kiwanis Club, and Lieutenant Governor at the State level. He served for 22 years on Coshocton City Council and chaired the first Coshocton Chamber of Commerce auction. He was awarded the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce Goodwill Ambassador Award in 1984 and the

But most people, especially school children, in Coshocton remember Jack for his 39-year portrayal of Johnny Appleseed. In his memory, the Coshocton Kiwanis Club planted two fruit-bearing apple trees at Lake Park. Mayor Steve Mercer dedicated the two trees on Wednesday, June 13, calling the two trees a “fitting memory and honor of Jack Ray Baumgardener.”

“You obviously touch a lot of lives in the course of 94 years,” said Mercer, “and for me, Jack touched my life. I really got to know him when I was on city council. He’d already been on there for many years, and it was always a pleasure to serve with him and his attitude in serving council and what he did. How he looked at what he did in public service, to me, was also an inspiration, so I appreciate that.”

Dick Baumgardener, Jack’s brother, was present for the dedication of the two trees. He read a letter from Mervin Baumgardener, Jack’s son, who could not be at the dedication. In Mervin’s letter, Jack is remembered especially for his words of wisdom.

“It means a great deal,” said Dick about the trees. “I was proud of my brother. He was 14 years older than I am, but I’ll be 80 in October and if I can do as good as he did when he was 94 years old, I’ll be tickled.”

Many of Jack’s former co-workers were also on hand to share memories about Jack.

BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT “We worked in the education department together,” said Rholanda Hunt, supervisor of the education department at Roscoe Village “Jack loved trees, and of course, he loved Johnny Appleseed and that was one thing, even when we would have a school group tour, if Jack needed to wait a few minutes before going into an exhibit area, he might offer some tidbits to the students about Johnny Appleseed and whenever we would have a staff dinner, Jack would always have some tidbits and words of wisdom, and usually a quote or two from Johnny Appleseed.”

The reason for planting two trees instead of just one is that apple trees will not produce fruit on their own and there must be two trees planted together so they can pollenate one another. The idea of planting a non-bearing apple tree was out of the question for the Kiwanis Club. Although Lake Park usually forbids planting fruit-bearing trees, Lori Everhart, Director of Lake Park, made an exception for Jack. Kiwanis members plan to clean up the apples from Lake Park on a regular basis.

“John Chaplin’s mission to plant not only seeds of apple trees but seeds of God’s Word, was also a personal reflection of the life Jack lived and the one he took to heart,” said Mercer.

During their regular meeting, Kiwanis also celebrated the 95th birthday of one of its members, Ralph Wisenburg. He was presented with a birthday cake from Roberta’s for the special occasion.

Garden tour scheduled

Millfork Valley 4-H Club meets

A Rain Barrels Away workshop was in March and a requirement for the participants was that they host a garden tour showcasing their rain barrels this summer. Two dates are scheduled: Sunday, June 24, from 2 - 4 p.m. and Tuesday, June 26, from 6 - 8 p.m. A map of the names and locations of the tours will be available at the Coshocton SWCD or OSU Extension offices, Roscoe Village Visitors Center, The Garden Patch, and Cantwell Creek.

The Rain Barrels Away workshop was a collaborative effort of the Coshocton Soil & Water Conservation District, OSU Extension, Coshocton County, Clary Gardens, and Roscoe Village Landscaping Department, with financial support through an ODNR Watershed Education Mini-Grant. If you have questions about the tour, contact Deb Bigelow at 622-8087, Ext. 4.

The Millfork Valley 4-H Club had a regular meeting May 22 at the home of 4-H member Colt Eaton.

Prior to the meeting, the club met and put flags on veterans’ graves.

The meeting was called to order by Club Advisor Elaine Ashcraft at 7 p.m.

Devon Fortune led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, Kennedy Webb led the 4-H Pledge, and William Fortune recited the 4-H Motto. Roll call was answered by favorite animal. There were 11 members present and five advisors. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.

In old business, the members discussed t-shirt orders, collected pennies for Relay for Life, participation in cleanup at Relay for Life, flower planting on SR 541 and CR 58 and plans for Memorial Day Parade.

In new business, members were reminded of the speaking contest.

Members were given project requirement papers, ownership papers for female goat projects and information about 4-H Jr. Camp.

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. The featured band performs from 7 – 9 p.m. and acoustic jam follows from 9:15 – 11 p.m. The featured band for June 23 is Wills Creek Bluegrass Band.

Cruz Main Street. The River View class of 1978 is hosting the cruz at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 23. All participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated in support of Shepherd’s Christian Assembly and New Life Ministries of Coshocton.

WTNS-FM will play 70’s music and participants are welcome to bring lawn chairs and sit on the Courthouse Square and visit. All River View, Ridgewood and Coshocton graduates also are invited to attend and help their school collect the most food. Community Festival. A free community festival will be at the Lafayette Pointe Nursing and Rehab on Saturday, June 23 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The event will feature a hog roast, bounce houses, antique tractor show, face painting, cornhole, and games. The West Lafayette Fire Department will be onsite for kids photos and Hayley Watson will entertain the crowd from Noon – 2 p.m. This is a free event, so bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the afternoon. Lafayette Pointe is located at 620 E. Main Street in West Lafayette.

Moto Cross Race. The second annual Moto Cross Race will be June 23 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 1 p.m., registration begins at 2 p.m., practice is at 3:30 p.m., and the race will be at 5 p.m. Admission is $5. Pit pass is $10. There will be a food stand and beer garden. The event is sponsored by the Coshocton County Fairboard and conducted

by Faircross Promotions.

Guitar - In. Think Cruise-In, only with guitars, not cars.

The Pomerene Center will be hosting a Guitar-In on Sunday, June 24 from 3 - 7 p.m. Tim Farrell will be headlining and SportsZone will be grilling. The Pomerene Center is located at 317 Mulberry Street.

Canal Days Festival. The Coshocton Canal Days Festival will be Aug. 10 - 12. The Coshocton Towne Centre Association is once again sponsoring this annual event which began in 1970 and celebrates the Canal Era. This change to the second weekend in August will be more convenient for the community. Crowning of the 2012 Junior Queen will be Thursday evening at the Courtsquare Gazebo and the festival will officially begin on Friday, Aug. 10 with the crowning of the 2012 Queen, Senior Queen and Princess. Saturday, Aug. 11 will be a full day of events with the Fabulous 50’s Car Show on Main Street, family fun with vendors, food and games on the courtsquare, and the Grand Parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Plans are being made for a Civil War Display, a corn hole tournament, and a quilt display at the Civic Hall by local quilters. The excitement will continue on Sunday with the vendors, family activities, and Mayor’s Promenade. There will be local entertainers each day at the gazebo and a concert of Main Street following the parade. Free musical series. Every Saturday from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. until September the Yellow Butterfly Winery is having a free musical series. The Yellow Butterfly Winery is located at 11661 Blue Ridge Rd in Newcomerstown.

Announcements Ask the Experts. Autumn Healthcare will be hosting a Senior Care and Share “Ask the Experts” Saturday, June 23 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Autumn Healthcare at 1433 Walnut Street. The menu will include barbecue and herb chicken, pasta salad, baked beans, and a create-your-own sundae bar. The experts will be available for information on Medicare, rehabilitation services, and Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Blood pressure and blood sugar will be checked for free on site.

Art. Barbara Hill-Rickman is showing her acrylic paintings at the West Lafayette Library during the month of June. Her art can be viewed at the library during normal operating hours, located at 601 East Main Street, West Lafayette.

Volunteers needed. United Way of Coshocton County and the Ohio Benefit Bank are teaming up once again next spring to offer local families with a total household income of less than $60,000 free tax preparation. In order to service more families next spring, they need more volunteers to be trained to offer this valuable service. This training session will be Friday, July 6 from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at COTC, room 465. No experience is necessary, but some computer literacy is helpful. NATIVE HISTORY Dave Apple, retired teacher at both Coshocton and Ridge-

wood, gave an oral presentation at the West Lafayette Library on Tuesday, June 12 about Native American history in Coshocton County. Apple has been collecting Native American and Early American artifacts his entire life and shared some of his findings with local residents who gathered at the outdoor library shelter to hear his stories. He talked about Native history and incorporated local roads and how they date back to Native times and how the Natives used them. Holding up one of his spearheads, he said, “To call anything before 500 years ago an arrowhead is wrong. They had no bows back then.” In this picture, he is displaying what many believed to be a huge spearhead. Apple explained that this was actually used as currency. Gospel in the Park

MUSIC Gospel in the Park was held June 16 and included music from various

church groups and a spaghetti dinner at Burt Park in West Lafayette. The first group to perform was Liberty Worship, which was followed by Chloe and Addie Crouso, Cheryl Peiter and X4J – Coshocton Christian Tabernacle Youth Group. “It wasn’t hard to get people to perform,” said Patty Griffith, who organized the entertainment. “I just had to ask and people volunteered.” The event was planned by the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, which plans to use funds raised to renovate the eat stand. “We wanted to get people out and give them something to do,” said Christie Maurer, president of the Chamber of Commerce. Retro-games tournament set

Yarn Art Camp is coming to the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum Monday, June 25, and winding up on Friday, June 29. The four-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon and is geared to girls and boys, ages 9 to 13.

Participants will work on a new yarn project each day. Monday is decorative yarn globes; Tuesday is hemp necklaces and friendship bracelets; Wednesday is crocheting a granny square; and Thursday is crocheting a personal project, such as a hacky sack, scarf or flower. Each participant will crochet a granny square to contribute to an afghan for the museum. The afghan will be put on display and later auctioned off to benefit the museum.

Instructor for Yarn Art Camp is Jessie Tubbs. Cost is $40 ($35 for Friends of the Museum) and includes all materials). Prepaid registration is required. The former Judy Stark and Chuck Finnell were united in marriage July 1, 1962 at the Canal Lewisville Methodist Church by Rev. Russell Hoy. Judy is the daughter of the late Clarence and Neva Stark, and Chuck is the son of the late William and Helen Finnell.

The couple have a daughter, Sherri (Mark) Gibson and a son, Scott (Amy) Finnell. They also have five grandchildren, Taylor and Jessie Gibson and Josie, Emily, and David Finnell.

Judy is a photographer and is retired from American Electric Power and Chuck is retired from General Electric.
