DEMOLISHED Demolition crews started the teardown and removal of Lincoln Elementary School on Monday morning, July 7. A small crowd of onlookers watched as more than 100 years of memories faded away. Kaylee Kreis, who attended Lincoln, as did her sister and father said, “Lincoln was not just a school. Lincoln was a second home to many of us. A home where friendships were formed and memories were made. These are the memories that everyone will want to cherish for the rest of their lives.” For more photos visit our website coshoctonbeacontoday.com. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met Wednesday, July 2 with Emily Adams of the OSU Extension Office and Danielle Erwin-Ellis, a co-chair of the levy committee, to discuss the OSU Extension Levy renewal for the November 2014 ballot. “Everything I’ve seen and experienced has been beneficial,” said Erwin-Ellis, “Everybody is affected by the extension in some way in the community in a positive way.” In 2009, OSU Extension was removed from the county budget. Erwin-Ellis and Adams asked if it would be possible to be reinstated on the county budget before pursuing another five-year levy renewal. The commissioners agreed that the extension would be better funded through the levy. However, it is required that the extension ask to be reinstated on the county budget before discussing the renewal of the levy. There will be one change on the 2014 November ballot. Due to the Ohio Revised Code, in November 2013, the wording that will appear on the ballot has changed from the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service, as seen on the 2009 ballot, to the OSU Extension. The 2015 five-year levy is estimated at $291,000. Currently, 10 counties in Ohio have OSU Extension operating through levies. Donations to help fund the OSU Extension Levy are appreciated and can be sent to Ohio Heritage

Coshocton County Extension 1965-1989 4-H Youth Development

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY EMILY ADAMS COSHOCTON - There were several 4-H agents in Coshocton County during the 60s and 70s. T. Roy Bogle served from 1963-66, John R. Veley from 1966-69, Donald E. Swonger in 1970, and Dale M. Johnson in 1971. Debra J. Endsley served as the 4-H Agent from 1972-74. I had the opportunity to chat with Endsley this week about her experiences in this role. She shared that the early 70s were a time of transition and change for the 4-H program in Ohio. Up until that time the 4-H agents attended individual club meetings and were an integral part of local club leadership. At that point 4-H Agents were asked to lead more county wide programs and events, and volunteers were asked to accept more responsibility for leading clubs at the local level. It took time for the transition in thinking, but the dedication of the volunteers allowed for even more opportunities in Coshocton County. Endsley mentioned that she had not participated in 4-H Camp until she was the 4-H Agent. Her first camp experience was enjoyable due to a talented and caring group of teenage counselors who made sure camp was a safe and happy experience for the younger campers. Endsley also remembers that at that time 4-H clubs were still separated by gender. The girls took mainly sewing and cooking projects together in clubs, while the boys took livestock projects in different clubs. There were some other projects available, but for the most part 4-H members were completing at least one traditional project. Endsley has continued to be very active with Coshocton County 4-H as a volunteer. She was even inducted into the Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame in 1999 in recognition of her many services to 4-H in Coshocton County and throughout Ohio. For Endsley, there are many things that have changed since her involvement began with Coshocton County 4-H in 1972, but the most important things have remained the same. 4-H members who have positive learning experiences and develop meaningful relationships grow up and want their own children to experience the same. 4-H can be proud of its heritage. Following Endsley, James Jonard was the 4-H Agent from 1974-76 and then James R. Totts from 1976-79. Sarah Jane Lindsey became the 4-H Agent in 1979 and retired in 2009. Look for more about Sarah Jane in a few weeks and all the impacts she made on the future and current leaders in our county and beyond. Emily G. Adams is the OSU Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources County Extension Director for Coshocton County.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON throughout Ohio, and allow local courts to innovate and tailor to meet their community’s needs and resources. “Continued community support, Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices and the Friends of Coshocton County Drug Court have allowed us to continue offering this program since its inception in 2004, even with new stricter guidelines”, said Blanchard. Recommended practices outlined in the certification process include establishing eligibility requirements, evaluating effectiveness of the specialized docket, and assembling a treatment team for implementing daily operations of the specialized docket. The team can include licensed treatment providers, law enforcement, court personnel, and is headed by the specialized docket judge. The Commission on Specialized Dockets has 22 members who advise the Supreme Court and its staff regarding the promotion of statewide rules and uniform standards concerning specialized dockets in Ohio courts; the development and delivery of specialized docket services to Ohio courts; and the creation of training programs for judges and court personnel. The commission makes all decisions regarding final certification.

COSHOCTON - The Juvenile Drug Court of the Coshocton County Juvenile Court has earned Final Certification from the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on Specialized Dockets. In order to receive the certification, the local court had to submit an application, undergo a site visit, and provide specific program materials in response to certification standards that went in to effect in January 2014. Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor congratulated the Coshocton Juvenile Court and Judge Van Blanchard II for receiving final certification. “Specialized dockets have proven effective at addressing persistent criminal behaviors,” said O’Connor. “Specialized dockets result in significantly lower recidivism rates which means offenders become productive members of society, for which we all benefit.” Specialized dockets are courts that are dedicated to specific types of offenses or offenders and use a combination of different techniques for holding offenders accountable while also addressing the underlying causes of their behavior. There are more than 150 specialized dockets in Ohio courts that deal with issues such as: drugs and alcohol, mental health, domestic violence, and sex offenses. The new standards provide a minimum level of uniform practices for specialized dockets

1954

JULY 11TH, 1954 Stan Shaw of Coshocton first became interested in telescopes while living in Phoenix when he first saw a homemade telescope that was made by one of his friends. His fascination grew and after getting a design idea from a book, Shaw decided to make his own star-gazing device in his back yard at his Cambridge Road home. This local amateur astronomer, and art director for Shaw Barton Inc., had recently completed the installation of his 12.5-inch mirror telescope on a special mounting. On certain nights, Shaw, friends, and neighbors could be seen searching for far-off planets or simply gazing at the sky.

1964

JULY 12TH, 1964 Deemed one of the biggest Sundays in Sandlot baseball, two teams were to come face-toface at Coshocton Lake Park, the Coshocton Merts and the Coshocton Oldtimers, in what promised to be an unforgettable battle. Many of the Sandlot players in the 40s and 50s would return to their old haunting grounds that day to take on the youngesters. The Oldtimers had rceently suffered a devastating loss as star pitcher, Gene Darr would not be able to play due to a fall. Spectators were encouraged to bring a bottle of ointment to give to the Oldtimers as comfort after the game.

1974

JULY 14TH, 1974 The theme of the week was baseball as Coshocton geared up for their Tag Days event to be that Friday and Saturday. Little League players were scourging the town selling tickets to the Injury Fund Project Night for a donation which would go to further improve and build new facilities, take care of improvements at Lake Park, and the new field at South Sixth Street. In addition to the baseball games, all city schools and the fairgrounds had events planned for children during the week.

1984

JULY 12TH, 1984 Power outages, broken tree branches, and heavy rainfall were reported the previous day as what West Lafayette Police Chief Jay Fortune termed, “an extremely powerful thunderstorm” hit the area just before 1 p.m. One West Lafayette resident reported that the rain was so heavy, it looked like snow. Homes and cars were severely damaged when trees fell and a smoke stack toppled on the Penn Michigan Plant along the Conrail railroad tracks due to high winds. The Coshocton Fire Department also responded to an electrical fire on the corner of Sixth and Chestnut Street.

Farmer’s Market hosting a hog roast FRESNO - Got BBQ? Well if you don’t, we do at the Fresno Farmers’ Market this coming Saturday, July 12. Your vendors, along with Mark and Kathy McCoy, are hosting a lip-smacking hog roast with all the trimmings, plus live music and an herbal workshop. Sounds like a good time to me! Slow roasted pulled pork, Verna Keims’ homemade chicken and noodles, fresh from the garden cole slaw and a juicy peachy dessert....I can hardly wait. We are all about “farm to table” goodness here in downtown Fresno and this Saturday that is exactly what you will experience. Our good friend Rod Bradford will be performing his style of country and gospel music for our listening enjoyment. That man sure does like to sing for his supper and we are certainly grateful. Master Herbalist, yours truly, will be giving a free medicinal herbal workshop for beginners, “Food should be your medicine and medicine should be your food” starting at approx. 9 a.m. Be sure to bring a pad and pencil for note taking. There will be a quiz following! Who knows you might even win something. Hint, hint! One thing is for sure when good people come together with good food, good music and good fellowship, the outcome can only be great! Local growers and producers are bringing that “farm to table” freshness in by the bushel, like: summer squash, sweet onions, crisp cabbages, (coming soon green beans) red beets, dark green kale, red ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh juicy peaches, black raspberries, rhubarb and much more. Our bakers are busy; even on these hot days with homemade noodles, artisian breads, fruit pies, lemon bars, coffee cakes, soft chewy cookies, rich chocolate fudge and many other sweet temptations. I saw a sign the other day that said it all

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY JULIA BROWN “Remember that Stressed spelled backwards is Desserts”. So, if you’re stressed out, our bakers can help you out! We all invite you out to the Fresno Farmers’ Market for some great market shopping and mouthwatering BBQ this Saturday! The BBQ will begin about 10 a.m., but come early and shop first. So, get it up, get it washed and dressed and come on out to the Fresno Market. We’ll have the coffee on for you and waiting. Here is a fresh “farm to table” recipe that will incorporate some the herbs you can learn about this Saturday that is full of flavor, refreshing and good for you too. Roasted New Potatoes with Fresh Herbs 1 - 2 lbs. new red potatoes washed & cut in half or quartered depending on their size 3 - 4 tbs. olive oil 2 cloves fresh garlic crushed 2 Tbs. fresh chopped rosemary 1 Tbs. fresh thyme leaves pulled from stem 3 Tbs. fresh chopped parsley kosher salt and black cracked pepper to taste In a large bowl, combine and mix well all of the above so that potatoes are coated evenly with herbs and oil mixture. Transfer to a rimmed cookie sheet and roast at 350 for about 40 minutes (turning once or twice to prevent burning) or until fork tender. The Fresno Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday morning 8 a.m. - noon, rain or shine, located at McCoy’s Auto Service in downtown Fresno. Signs are posted. For more information, call 545-0997 or 545-0849 anytime.

each year. This year’s show will focus on Oliver tractors and equipment with the help of guests from the Buckeye Oliver Association. “Next year will be MinneapolisMoline and then we will start the circle over,” Wyler said. “There were about five or six main ones used here in Coshocton and we like to feature different ones to give people who owned them the opportunity to bring them or (other farm) equipment in. I’m amazed by the pieces of equipment that people bring in and we don’t know what they are.” In addition to the display of tractors and farm equipment, there also will be a garden tractor pull on Sunday, hosted by a group from Adamsville and several games played throughout the event. “We play games with tractors,” Wyler said. “We have slow, fast and barrel races.” The group also is planning softball, hay bale, wrench and skillet throws, a nail driving contest, money scramble for the kids and a kiddie tractor pull.

“We are pretty busy,” Wyler said. “There also are not only antique tractors, but antique trucks and cars. There weren’t too many last year, but we are hoping for a few more this year.” There also will be hit and miss engines on display. “You can join us just for fun,” Wyler said. “You don’t have to have old machinery or tractors to be part of the group. We have great camaraderie with one another and enjoy doing things together. I’ve made friendships that I never would have made if it wasn’t for this club.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

FREEDOM FEST Hopewell Industries hosted their annual Freedom Fest on Thursday, July 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a variety of fun and games for the community. Guest speaker at the event was Marci Straughter from Columbus who has just finished her second year of college and hopes to work with people with disabilities when she graduates. The event was filled with laughter, fellowship, and enjoying being together, with the occasional water balloon sailing through the air! Activities included a dank tank, friendly water balloon fights, a variety of games inside, a silent cake auction, and a pie-in-the-face stand where many people took advantage of hitting their friends with an aluminum pie pan filled with whipped cream. There was also a military truck for kids to climb in, an EMS vehicle, and a sheriff’s car for the kids to explore. Money from the cake auction went to the Firefighters Toy Drive. “We are just so fortunate for all of these donations,” said Mona Eick, Hopewell administrator. “I just hear so much positive coming from the people we’re serving every day. They are so happy.” For more photos of the Freedom Fest, see our website www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com. BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT

CHURCH PROGRAM Children worked together Tuesday, July 1, to act out stories from the Bible at a day camp hosted by Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The camp was for children ages 6 to 13 and attendees enjoyed crafts, singing, games, sports and Bible study. The week-long camp was held at the church and was a cooperative effort of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Ohio. “It was shared with me that in our community only 15 percent of children in this age group say they are Christians,” said Dana Kittner, organizer of the camp. “This is an opportunity for them to see and experience Christianity in an active, fun and safe way. Our hope is that we will get to interact with them and then their faith will take off.” Emmanuel Lutheran Church has offered day camp for roughly 15 years now and Kittner said the late Sarah Fox was a driving force behind getting the church involved in the program. met. “Now that we have this generator, if we need a place for people with higher medical needs to live at, they have a place to go,” said Farrah Cunningham, service and support administrator for the Coshocton County Board of DD. “I want to make sure the Coshocton Foundation knows how much we appreciate their help with this.” There were four people living in the home when the need for the generator was discovered and currently there are three who reside there. “The closest hotel we could find to stay at during that outage was in Canton,” said Wendy McMorrow, home management professional. She and her staff are happy they won’t have to put the residents through that situation again. The three who still live there showed their appreciation by posing for a picture with a thank you poster made for the Coshocton Foundation. “If you ask them, they will tell you that having to leave makes them feel fear,” Cunningham said. “It can cause a lot of unnecessary stress.” Those residing in the home receive 24 hour care from direct care support professionals who help make sure their needs are met. “Each and every one of us, whether we have a disability or not deserve to live a good life,” Cunningham said. “Our goal is to help them achieve that.” The Coshocton Community Housing Inc. does its part to help by using its 11 residences in the community to give 23 people with disabilities a place to call home. “It’s all about the idea of freedom,” Champagne said. “Like everyone else, they (people with disabilities) just want to live in their own home.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
