trafficking work being done by American Baptist International Ministries. “I heard about it a few years ago and it just stuck with me,” he said. “After I graduated I wanted to go on an adventure, but if I was putting my time and effort into something I wanted it to be for a benefit.” Zambrows started his tour of the country in June and recently made a stop in Coshocton, where he shared his message during the July 4th celebration at the fairgrounds. “My experiences have been good,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot of thank yous for what I’m doing and made a lot of people aware of the problem.” Zambrows also has had many kind hosts, such as the Rev Joseph Sanders from the First Baptist Church in Coshocton. “So far I have not had to use my tent during my trip,” Zambrows said. The entire trip will take him through 34 states and last until roughly November. “It’s going to be an adventure and I’m going to meet millions of people,” Zambrows said. He also is putting his film degree to use while on his trip. “I have a camera mounted on my bike to chronicle my actual journey and will use my videos to make a documentary,” Zambrows said. Anyone interested in helping Zambrows with his cause can look up more information at www.ridingagainsttraffic.org. He also asked that people turn their lights on when they are driving to make them more visible and to simply be aware of the problem of human trafficking. “It’s a problem everywhere, especially where there are desperate people,” Zambrows said. “I also challenge others to just be good humans and see the value of others beyond their looks, intelligence or even their political views. We are all valuable.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – Doug and Jane Johnston believe in downtown. “People say there is nothing here, but that won’t change until someone goes downtown and gives it a shot,” Doug said. The couple owns Shaker House Antiques in Roscoe Village, but they also want to see people shopping on Main Street. “There will be people that will only come to town to shop in Roscoe and others who will only come for downtown,” Doug said. “We want to see them cross the bridge and there are other shop owners in Roscoe who want to see both sides of town flourish.” John Larson from The Warehouse Steak n’ Stein showed his faith by opening Oscar Rose Steak & Seafood and the Johnstons are showing theirs with the opening of The Vault 416 on Main. “We were running out of room in Roscoe and we’ve almost already outgrown this space,” Doug said. The Vault opened at the beginning of June and Doug said sales have been going well so far. “We have primitive to nice fine antiques,” Doug said. “We also have more artwork at this store because we have more wall space.” The items in the store also are locally purchased. “We only go to two or three counties for auctions and we also have Coshocton-made
items,” Doug said. “People who come to Roscoe and want to leave with a local antique to take home will find that in our stores.” The store also does wish lists, layaway if a deposit is put down and consignment with a 30 percent commission when items are sold. “If you let us know what you are looking for we will be happy to give you a call if we find it,” Doug said. He also will help you do his best to find out what your personal antiques might be worth. “I’m not a certified appraiser, but I’ll be happy to take a look at something and give you a ballpark figure,” he said. The Vault is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and if you can’t find what you are looking for there, you can travel to Roscoe and Shaker House Antiques from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week. “We just hope people continue to come and see what we have to offer,” Doug said. COSHOCTON TOWNE CENTRE
COSHOCTON - Thanks to everyone who made the July 4th Independence Celebration and Fireworks Display possible! Each July 4, the volunteers of the Coshocton Towne Centre set a goal of having a fun, family-oriented celebration at the Coshocton fairgrounds that focuses on patriotism and pride in the country. The event has been a success over the past few years, so this year we set out to expand the day’s activities and add more vendors, live entertainment, activities, and fun for kids. The entire day gave families the opportunity to celebrate up until the fantastic fireworks display. We are proud to announce that this year was a success, with gate donations totally over $4,200 and the Mayor’s Challenge generating $6,620.00 with special thanks to Buckeye Brine and the Jeff Drennen Dealerships who answered the Mayor’s call. The Coshocton Towne Centre volunteers and committee members would like to thank each and every donator who made this year’s celebration successful. Without the generous support of the community, the annual July 4th celebration would not be possible! The Towne Centre Association would also like to thank their business partners who pledge over $3800.00 to the July 4th Independence Day Celebration: The Coshocton Rotary Club, Central Ohio Technical College Coshocton Campus, Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, Organic Technologies, Rock Tenn, The City of Coshocton, Marylyn’s Natural Foods, Mineral Fiber Manufacturing, Auer Ace Hardware, John DeCosky Ford Dealership, Kiwanis Club of Coshocton, WTNS, Warehouse Steak & Stein, Coshocton County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Jacobs Vanaman Insurance, Century 21 Court Square Realty The Towne Centre Association is looking towards next year’s July 4th Independence Day celebration, with a new goal set to make it even bigger and better than this year.

WITH CARE
COSHOCTON – Mayor Steve Mercer wants Coshocton to be known as “The Made in the U.S.A.” city and Becky Lowe is doing her part to help spread that theme in Ohio. After this summer, hundreds of people will know that Coshocton is the home of handmade pottery that comes from Lowe’s Liberty Pottery in Roscoe Village. Lowe and her crew have spent the last couple of months working on an order of 900 bowls for the Troy Daily News in Troy. “If you sign up for a subscription to their paper at the Shelby, Miami or Darke county fair they give you a free piece of Ohio-made pottery,” Lowe said. “The Troy Daily News has offered its customers pottery for the past five years and switched to Liberty Pottery for its sixth year of the program.” The Troy Daily News has used its unique buckeye leaf design each year, but changes the style of pottery it’s placed on. The bowls Lowe made for them this year are signed, dated and numbered and the bottom also lets people know that they were made in Roscoe Village. “They’ve been very successful doing this and I think it’s a good way to promote Ohio,” Lowe said. “They’ve also been super easy to work with. I think they found us through our website.” The project is normally started in January, but Lowe said she was not contacted until March and the details weren’t finalized until May. “May 6 we threw our first bowl and they needed 900 total,” Lowe said. “It’s an enormous project and all the girls have been helping. We’ll
probably have done 1,000 by the time you add in the samples and rejects.” Lowe said there is very little handmade pottery in Ohio now and the Troy Daily News is trying to work in five year increments with those who still practice the art. “I hope they are happy with us so we can get samples out to them in October or November and start working on next year’s project in January,” she said. Lowe was still working on the project in July, but was glad she took it on. “Each bowl takes five days, but these have
a historical value because they are a signed and dated piece of Ohio pottery,” she said. “They also promote Roscoe and the Mayor’s saying that we are ‘The Made in the U.S.A.’ city.” Filling the Troy Daily News’ order has also shown Lowe that she still has what it takes even though she is semi-retired. “It’s been long, hard physical days doing 30-50 bowls a day, but even though I’ll be 64 in September I can still do this,” she said. “It’s been fun and challenging. Since we had a short list to start with, we requested others contact family members and friends who they believed would be interested. Attendees traveled from various parts of Ohio and the following states: California, Florida, New York and Virginia to meet with local residents to reminisce, and meet with long ago friends. As with the reunion in 2009, the gathering on June 2, 2013 was another success. Once again, friends and former neighbors from near and far shared their photos, scrapbooks and stories from mostly the 1940-1970 eras. Both of the last two reunions were held at the “party garage” of Bobbi (Emerson) and Don Lawrence of West Lafayette. NEWARK— Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is re-launching the engineering technology department with a diverse array of engineering technology degrees and certificate programs. “If I were asked to describe the COTC engineering technologies in one word, it would be revitalized,” said Dean Vicki Deketelaere, Ph.D. “The new programs are cutting-edge, directly connected to the job market and will prepare students with the skills most in demand by employers.” “The new engineering technology program readies students to participate in a wide variety
of industries after graduation,” said Assistant Professor and Program Director Amir Nassirharand, Ph.D. “This is so because the breadth of the program is expanded while having a depth in each particular discipline.” To deliver information about the re-designed programs and career opportunities, multiple meetings with the engineering technology dean, faculty and advisors will be this summer. July 11th, 1963 The local Chacos building had been chosen as the Coshocton location for installing a new air pollution unit from the Ohio Department of Health as part of measuring air pollution in the city. This site was one of 22 stations in Ohio with the unit installed by the health department in an attempt to determine levels of air pollution in different areas. Samples were to be taken twice a month to indicate the amount of dust and smoke in the air, and also the amount of lung cancer-producing agents contained in the samples.

July 15th, 1973 Local artist, Annette Salrin, had recently created a second edition souvenir plate relating to the Roscoe Village Restoration in continuation of her first plate, which had depicted the Blacksmith Shop in Roscoe. Her newest creation pictured the restored Jackson Township Hall in the Village. Salrin was a commercial artist who had only the previous year published a folio of color sketches of restored structures in Roscoe Village. The artist stated that she also planned to create a third commemorative plate in 1974 to carry on the series.

July 16th, 1983 Becky Fletcher had always been close with her brother, Fritz Brokaw, and she was about to show her unconditional love for her brother the next week, by giving him one of her kidneys. Since that April, Fritz had to make three trips a week to Columbus to be on dialysis as both of his kidneys had been removed. This surgery would hopefully put a stop to those trips, depending on if Fritz’s body accepted or rejected his sister’s kidney. Becky and Fritz’s other two sisters had gone through tests to see who would be the best match for Fritz, and they found that Becky and Fritz were exact matches.

As with a visit to any town, a positive image creates a lasting memory and this is why the Overall Impression category is so important. Businesses and residents worked hard with the spring clean-up to beautify Coshocton and they continue to do so. Cleanliness, lack of litter and maintenance of properties help to make Coshocton a show place and the CIB committee thanks everyone for doing their part to welcome the judges.

Do you have a good story, a memory, a favorite athlete or even a folkloric yarn to share? The more fun facts, the better. These Our Town Story sessions are being videotaped for posterity. Don’t let our local history be forgotten. Our Town Stories begins at noon, and all are welcome to attend. JHM’s Our Town Stories meets on the second Thursday of each month to discuss an array of local history topics. The atmosphere is casual and the discussion is always informative, fun and surprising. Free beverages and cookies will be provided, and admission for the program is free. August’s topic will be Ice, ice cream—homemade and purchased, sodas and soft drinks, including the shops where you could purchase them. MARTINSBURG - The week of July 4th is the traditional week for Coshocton County youth to attend 4-H Camp Ohio and approximately 150 area boys and girls did just that. And despite the daily rains, torrential downpours and thunderstorms, the kids had fun and made the best of the weather. Alex Williams, who attends Union School, said this about camp, “I’m enjoying the swimming, seeing people play and everything. I like it.” Alex said he just dealt with the rain and he was looking forward to the dance later that evening (Saturday). He declined to tell The Beacon if he was going to dance with anyone special. When asked about the food, he replied “Awesome!” Alex said, “It’s pretty cool here,” and he would encourage other youth to attend camp next year. “It is fun to do.” Lindsey Mandau, who is the program director at Camp Ohio, said, “I enjoy everything about this. I was a camper here, a counselor here, adult staff, I worked seasonal positions here and now am employed full time. I love everything about this camp. I think this camp is special because of all the activities that we do. We have our adventure tower, zip line, climbing wall, a high ropes course, we do all the 4-H shooting sports disciplines. We try to make it special for everybody.” “It’s important to get kids out doors, getting experience in nature, just making new friends, getting all these life experiences. This year we’re doing something new, called “Health Rocks.” It’s a grant that focuses on healthy lifestyle choices. A lot of that plays into getting the right nutrition, getting physical and all those good things.” “We typically don’t cancel anything unless it thunderstorms. The kids take rain ponchos, umbrellas and make the best of it. A lot of times they’re just happy to get wet. A lot of the campers will grow up and become counselors. The experiences they get here keep them coming back.” Lindsey said that the experiences gained at camp and 4-H help young people become successful future leaders in their communities and that camp exemplifies those traditions.” MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

FRESNO - Ah, the bounty of local gardens. What a wonderful thing! The fresh local produce is streaming into the Fresno Farmers’ Market, much to everyone’s delight. I think that my BULK MULCH appreciation of homegrown fresh foods came Double Ground Hardwood Mulch from my Grandmother Edna, who raised the Brown • Red • Black $27/yard most immaculate garden imaginable, never a BULK MUSHROOM weed to be found. It was her who taught me how COMPOST 740.622.8915 to “put things up” as she called it. I remember PICK-UP & DELIVERY 52441 CR16, watching her can red beets, one of my favorites 9am-5pm Monday thru Saturday Evenings & Sundays by Appointment West Lafayette, OH to this very day, and thinking how fun it was to put my little hands into all that red juice. Fast forward 40 years and today it seems that most kids have never seen a pressure cooker or listened to canning jars “pop” on the counter-top as they seal. Have we become that disconnected from our food as a society that we don’t appreciate where it originated from? I certainly hope that’s not the case. If you are like me and the rest of the vendors at the Fresno Market and want to be connected to the food that you serve your family, then you have come to the right place. Knowing the where, what and from whom your food is produced is what farm to table is all about. It is privilege here at the Fresno Market to have Hershberger Country Store our the opportunity to do just that, every Saturday 2 ½ miles S.W. of New Bedford on TR 220 morning here in downtown Fresno. Open M, T, Th & Sat 7:30 - 5 • W & F 7:30 - 8 pm • Closed Sun Some of the items coming into market that scream “farm to table” are: Cabbage, broccoli crowns, red ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, rainbow swiss chard, sugar snap peas, blueberries, sweet onions, garlic, yellow summer squash, zucchini, kohlrabi, radishes and of course my favorite, red beets. There also are fresh large brown eggs, local maple syrup, homemade 321 South 6th Street, Coshocton 740.622.1649 • 740.502.1743 Cell

Fresh produce streaming into Fresno Farmers’ Market
wheat, flax-seed and Italian breads, fruit pies, angel food cakes, homemade donuts, herbal tea blends, homemade laundry soap, soy candles, wooden blue bird boxes, and so much more. Now that’s what I’m talking about! Homegrown and homemade items, produced by caring individuals, at a great value. Every year since my family and I have lived here in Fresno, I have planted a row of red beets in remembrance of my Grandma Edna and every year when I stand at my sink and put my hands in that red juice, I smile! It’s that kind of farm to table memories that we hope to invoke in our families and in yours. From all of us, thank you for letting the Fresno Farmers’ Market be your choice in providing that same farm fresh goodness to your families. I know that not everyone is a red beet fan, like myself, but here is a delicious way to try them, that brings out their natural sugars. Roasted Red Beets 1 nice bunch of tender red beets, washed good, stems trimmed away. On a cookie sheet, arrange beets. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with coarse salt. In a 350 degree oven, roast beets until fork tender, turning them several times, about 40 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet and let cool enough so that you can handle them without getting burnt. Run under cold water to remove skins. Slice beets on a platter, dust with a little cinnamon and sugar if you desire or simply sprinkle with salt and pepper. Red beets are highly nutritious. They are heart healthy and their unique pigment has antiaging effects, plus they help lower cholesterol levels. See why everyone should like beets! The Fresno Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday morning, rain or shine, at McCoy’s Auto. Signs are posted. For information or to join us as a vendor, please call 545-0849 or 545-0997 anytime.

COSHOCTON – Looking for boots? Fortune’s Boot Shop & Shoe Repair has 4,250 pairs of them in its new and bigger location at 23024 County Road 621. The business moved to the County Road 621 location from Main Street 11 years ago, but had outgrown its 4,000 square foot spot and decided
JOSIE SELLERS to move a few doors down to expand to 7,500 square feet on July 1. “The biggest difference is that our stock is more centrally located and you can see it,” said Sheri Fortune. Her husband Brent operates the business. “The store is more shopper friendly,” he said. “It’s easier for people to come and find what they want.” Shoppers will find much more than boots at the business. It also features socks, hats, Liberty Bibs, work and western wear, leather goods and boot care products. Fortune’s also still does shoe repair, which Brent’s father Pinky has been
