Busy Bee Play & Learn Camp for children ages 3 to 6 is Monday, July 29, through Wednesday, July 31. There are two time sessions: The morning session runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session runs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Busy Bee Play & Learn Camp is designed with young learners in mind. Children get hands-on with art and science in this threeday program. Each day introduces a new topic to campers through basic, easy to understand activities. Campers build confidence through problem solving while developing social skills and interacting in a group setting.

Camp Invention for children ages 7 to 11 begins Monday, Aug. 5, and continues until Friday, Aug. 9. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to

COSHOCTON - The Works is bringing the fun of science and art to the Coshocton campus of Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) with two children’s camps this summer. Busy Bee Play & Learn Camp and Camp Invention present fundamental education concepts in the unique style of The Works to spark imagination and creativity. A limited number of scholarships to send children to camp are available through a donation from the Simpson Family Fund.

“What could be more fun than learning by inventing, experimenting and creating?” said Teri Holder, COTC Special Assistant to the

The Camp Invention CREATE program is packed with five days of hands-on activities, brainstorming, experimentation and unbelievable action. Campers are immersed in the wondrous world of science fiction as they use their creative and critical thinking skills to keep them safe and nourished after crashlanding on a strange planet.

Tomma Bordenkircher gave an update on the 80th anniversary celebration scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Frontier Power. She also discussed possible fall fundraisers and $47 was collected for First Step.

COSHOCTON – Jack Lyons had a great time in Washington D.C. He’d go back in a minute and take Jack Patterson with him.

“He was wonderful to me,” said Lyons who is a World War II veteran.

Patterson was his guardian on the May 18 Honor Flight out of Columbus and had a wheelchair and umbrella ready for him if he needed it. The flight is a one day, free trip to D.C. for World War II and Korean War veterans to see their memorials. Guardians like Patterson pay their own way to go on the trip and help the veterans.

“We got to see almost all the memorials and our buses were escorted,” Patterson said. “We never stopped for a red light in D.C. We were treated well and were a top priority.”

He and Lyons shared their thoughts on the trip during a presentation July 11, at the Senior Center.

Vietnam Veteran Dave Dilly has organized three of these trips for local veterans and encourages more to take part in the program.

“To go to D.C. with these veterans is very special for me,” he said. “I appreciate that you allow us to be part of your life and accompany you to D.C.” Nelva Fogle also was thankful for the opportunity to go on the trip as a guardian. She was the first female to go with a group from

Coshocton and she was sponsored by the local Blue Star Mothers.

“I enjoyed it,” she said. “It’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.”

Many of the veterans who took the trip also spoke about how much they appreciated the people who gathered to welcome them at the airports.

“There were so many people you couldn’t get through,” Lyons said. “You really felt like you had done something.”

World War II veteran Terry Shaw also felt honored while on the trip.

“It felt so good to be appreciated,” he said.

“I’ll never forget this.”

Terry’s guardian was his son, Steve Shaw.

“I highly recommend veterans get their applications in and do this,” he said. “It’s a really awesome trip.”

Dilly is planning to get another group of Coshocton veterans together to go on the Honor Flight in September. NEWARK - Students can now earn a Bachelor of Science in Social Work (B.S.S.W.) at The Ohio State University at Newark. The Undergraduate Social Work program at Ohio State Newark prepares students to assume beginning professional roles as direct service practitioners in social welfare organizations and lays the foundation for further social work education at the graduate level.

Beginning in autumn semester 2013, juniorlevel social work major courses will be offered at Ohio State Newark. Both junior and seniorlevel major social work courses will be offered beginning in autumn semester 2014. Admission requirements to the social work major are the same for the social work degree offered on Ohio State University’s Columbus campus.

The Newark campus program blends distancelearning technologies with traditional classroom instruction. Courses at Newark are taught by both faculty within the College of Social Work and regional campus instructors. Regional campus students can receive the same comprehensive social work education that they would receive on OSU’s Columbus campus.

Students were already able to take almost all the classes necessary to earn a master in Social Work (M.S.W.) at Ohio State Newark, with just a few classes required at the Columbus campus. Now students will be able to experience a seamless transition from the undergraduate to the graduate program, all at Ohio State Newark.

July 17th, 1953 The last of the Ohio canal boat skippers had recently passed away in Coshocton at the ripe age of 102. He was born Dec. 23, 1850 and inherited his love of the canal from his father who was also a boat captain. Captain William Smart was first introduced to the canal at the age 12 as a tug hand. He began an apprenticeship under his father and saved up his money to buy his own boat at the age of 22. The mule-powered boats carried produce and merchandise and Captain Smart and his family lived on the boats much of the time.

1963

July 17th, 1963 For the first time in 15 years, the wail of a steam engine was heard in Coshocton as The General, famed Civil War railroad locomotive, puffed into Coshocton, her bell clanging proudly. About 2,000 people came out that afternoon to greet the train, which stayed in Coshocton for two hours before her trip through Ohio to Toledo where it would eventually go to the Ford museum. The General traveled at 20 to 25 miles an hour and had to stop every 25 miles for water. The old Louisville and Nashville coach had been in a Chattanooga train shed for 70 years before touring as part of the Civil War Centennial.

1973

July 19th, 1973 Is that hail? Or ping pong balls falling from the skies? The Chamber of Commerce had their annual sidewalk sale for two days and as part of the sales, 7,200 ping pong balls dropped onto Main Street to thousands of eager spectators. Each ping pong ball contained an offer good in the participating firm marked on the ball and had to be redeemed the two days of the sale, Friday or Saturday. Four of those 7,200 ping pong balls were redeemable for $25 each at the Chamber office and did not have to be used the days of the sale. Shoppers were asked to park off of Main Street during that time so cars would not be damaged by the ping pongs or the eager residents searching for fallen balls.

1983

July 17th, 1983 The Muskingum Valley Council Scout Reservation near Conesville had just received an ‘A’ rating from the Boy Scouts of America national camp inspection team for the 10th consecutive year. Rev. Tim Lehman, camp director, said the camp has come a long way since it opened in 1968. This 515-acre site offered an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 16 lakes including some for boating, a rifle range, and archery range. The camp was home to about 800 Boy Scouts from all over the state each summer for their six-week camp. The camp was used yearround for Girl Scouts and church retreats.

The church will celebrate the 115th anniversary of its dedication with its beer, brats and band event featuring music by The Booze Brothers. The fun will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 20, on the church’s north lawn right after the regular 5 p.m. mass. Parish members and the community are welcome to come and enjoy food, fun and fellowship.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the church window restoration project.

“Several years ago an inspection of the windows was done,” said Father Bill Hritsko.

“We got the information and set it aside because at the time fixing the windows was not an emergency. It’s not an emergency now either, but when an inspection of all our buildings was (recently) done we were told we should consider the repair and restoration of the (church) windows.”

The church has 27 windows/openings that were installed in 1898.

“This is something that has been on my mind for a number of years,” Hritsko said. “I don’t want to lose the treasure that these windows are.”

The initial proposal the church received on fixing the windows in 2010 was for $39,000.

Trying to replace them would cost a minimum of $250,000.

“It’s about more than repair,” Hritsko said. “It’s also about restoration because the paint is disintegrating. There are people with no faces and decorations that have flaked off.”

Upgrades also would be made to protect the windows from the elements and allow better light to pass through them. Hritsko estimates that the project could now cost more than $50,000 and is in the process of getting a more definite figure.

Other fundraisers such as the opportunity to adopt a window and purchase portraits of the church are being organized.

The public is encouraged to call the parish office at 622-8817 to learn more about the window restoration project and to simply come enjoy itself on July 20.

“The Booze Brothers are a DJ party crew and I think they play just about everything,” Hritsko said. “They are locally known and fun entertainers with the music.”

Attendees also will enjoy Johnsville Brats and Nathan’s Hotdogs.

“They will be $2 each and the Lions will be doing the grilling for us,” Hritsko said. “We also will have all the fixings and chips. We are trying to keep it simple since this is our first time doing something like this.”

Beer will be $2 a can and soft drinks and chips will both be a $1.

“You will be able to get a beer, brat and chips for $5 and feed a family of four for $20,” Hritsko said.

Plans also are being made to have cornhole games set up.

“We are hoping to make this an annual event,” Hritsko said.

“Outdoor warnings have limited effectiveness,” he said. “Not many people live within range of them. This hits the whole county. At 3 a.m. a lot of people are not going to hear the sirens because they are asleep, but if the phone rings at that time you are going to wonder if something is wrong.”

COSHOCTON – Have you signed up for the CodeRed emergency telephone calling system?

The system is used to alert the public about a variety of emergency situations.

“I can have calls sent out to the whole county, an entire township or just a couple of houses and businesses,” said Rob McMasters, Coshocton County Emergency Management Director. “It has that much flexibility.”

The county started using the system in 2004 and has a little over 13,000 numbers in its database, which were gathered from various sources.

Numbers come from the Emergency Communications Network, utility billing data, business license data, 911 data and community members who enter their information by visiting www.coshoctonema.com and clicking on the CodeRed icon.

“The county has a population of 36,000 so we really want to build this database up with as many numbers as we can,” McMasters said. “No one should assume they are already in it.”

Home and cell phone numbers can be entered into the system and iPhone and Android users can download a CodeRed Mobile Alert App. People also can choose to receive not only calls from the system, but also texts and e-mails.

“The mobile app is a little different though,” McMasters said. “The calling system uses your address but the mobile app is geographically centered. If you are traveling and are in a community that has the CodeRed system you will get alerts from that area.”

The system can be activated by the EMA, the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office and Coshocton Fire.

“It’s not just used for weather issues,” McMasters said. “The Sheriff’s Office used it

COSHOCTON – Triston Conn likes to use his imagination and the Triple Locks Theater is the perfect place for him to do that.

“You get to be someone else when you are on stage,” he said.

Conn plays the Baker in the Coshocton Footlight Players Summer Youth Production, “Into the Woods, Jr.,” which will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 18-20 and 25-27, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21 and July 28, at the Triple Locks Theater.

The cast of 43 young actors is directed by Susan Metz.

“When these kids are up and singing you will get goose bumps because they are awesome,” she said.

The play is a musical comedy written by James Lapine and featuring music by Stephen Sondheim.

“I saw the adult version of the play in New York City and liked it and the music,” Metz said.

“When I found out there was a junior version I was very interested, but I was concerned because it has difficult music.”

That concern, however, went away once musical director Mike Abood started working with the cast.

“He’s done an amazing job with the kids and they’ve got it,” Metz said.

In addition to musical numbers, the play also features familiar fairy tale characters woven into one story.

“It’s about people and what they wish for and how they go about making those wishes come true,” Metz said. “It’s very creative.”

During the play the Baker and his wife discover the witch next door put a curse on them that will prevent them from having children.

During their quest to break the spell, they come across people such as Cinderella who is played

by Madison Miller.

“I like the part because I know her story and she is easy to play,” Miller said.

Cinderella’s stepsisters also make an appearance.

“I play Lucinda,” said Annie Bosson. “I love being mean. When you act, you get to create a whole different character and I like seeing the way it comes out on stage.”

COSHOCTON – America in Bloom judges, Ed Hooker and Alex Pearl, were in Coshocton last week to assess the progress the city has made in regards to suggestions judges made last year.

The judges met with Jan Myers, Coshocton Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director; Amy Stockdale, Coshocton Chamber of Commerce executive director; and Dorothy Skowrunski, Coshocton Port Authority executive director at the Coshocton Convention and Visitors Bureau at 10 a.m. on Thursday for an update of activities and events happening in Coshocton.

Myers began the meeting by talking to the judges about all Coshocton has to offer with our many festivals, which not only bring our community together, but bring tourists to our community. She touched briefly on the Apple Butter Festival, Hot Air Balloon Festival, Christmas Candlelighting, Canal Days, Dulcimer Days, Crow Homecoming, and a new festival that will premier in 2014 which will focus on our Native American Heritage. She also mentioned community organizations that have been in this area for many years including the Coshocton Community Band and the

Stockdale updated the judges on the business growth in Coshocton, including Commonwealth Americana, located at Kiefer’s Florist.

“We’re really proud of Commonwealth Americana,” Stockdale said. “It’s been a really unique venue for our local artists.”

She also discussed the new Coshocton Cash Mob, which is a monthly event that encourages shoppers to spend at least $10 in a previouslychosen local business. Stockdale mentioned the many awards and recognitions that are awarded to prominent members of the community, such as the Coshoctonian award, Small Business of the Year award, and Employee of the Year award.

Skowrunski updated the America in Bloom judges on the economics and jobs in Coshocton, and drew special attention to the challenges and opportunities of the ATEX Pipeline.

“The oil and gas industry is on our doorstep, so it’s very important that we do this right,” she said.

“We spent a lot of time physically working on this space, now we are working on energizing this space,” she said. “Without people, there is no energy in a community.”

Across the street at the Court House, the judges met Tim France and Deb Gaumer to discuss the court square layout and flowers.

France updated them on the monuments in the court square and maintenance of the trees and flowers. France also talked about the community service program, which has been a success in the community for a lot of minor offenders.

Gaumer discussed the plant selection, growing, and maintaining the flowers in the court square. She also said the hanging baskets on Main Street have encouraged people to plant in hanging baskets in their own front yard.

“It stimulates community involvement in their private homes,” she said about the hanging baskets on Main Street. “It’s fun working with people. Planting no matter what is exciting to me. We’re proud of our city. We’re proud of our court house. It’s beautiful.”

The group then had lunch at Oscar Rose where Debra Wallace discussed the community tree program, removing dead trees and stumps, and pruning trees. Her goal is to start a tree commission.

“We are determined and we are making progress,” she said.

Local singers head to All-Ohio Youth Choir at State Fair COSHOCTON – More than 20 local students have been chosen to sing in the 51st edition of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus this summer. Founded in 1963 by Glenville D. Thomas, the Youth Choir has appeared in concert around Ohio and abroad, marched in a number of national parades, and has sung for several gubernatorial inaugurations.

Since 1992, the All-Ohio Youth Choir has been led by Charles R. Snyder, Coshocton.

Snyder is the director of music at The Presbyterian Church, Coshocton, and music director and conductor of the Coshocton Community Choir, a 100-voice auditioned ensemble he founded in 1971. He also conducts the Coshocton Children’s Choir, a regional choir for young singers in grades 4-8 that he organized in 1987. In 2002, he created the Coshocton Youth Chorale, a high school ensemble that includes 52 singers from several counties.

After converging at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus on July 18, choir members will

spend five days in rigorous rehearsals prior to the official opening of the 158th Ohio State Fair on Wednesday, July 24. Each day of the fair, the Youth Choir will sing for some 60,000 fairgoers as they perform at six to eight sites on the 360acre grounds in more than 100 performances over the run of the fair. On Saturday, Aug. 3, the Choir will be joined by hundreds of alumni in a celebration of song.

The Youth Choir’s 2013 show is entitled “Sing Together,” a musical celebration of the unifying gift of song.

COSHOCTON – A new permanent dog license tag will go into effect on Dec. 1, 2013 in accordance with a newly-passed state law. The new law will be for a 10-year dog tag with an expiration date featured on the tag.

Rusty Dreher, dog warden, also reported that a kennel licenser in Millersburg had his rabbits killed and/or injured by his neighbor’s four dogs. The owner of the dog has been charged with criminal charges and has pleaded guilty. A fine of $180 is asked to be paid. The attack was caught on camera.

The commissioners also discussed a recommendation from the Coshocton County Regional Planning Commission Executive Committee to grant J.A.R. Investors, LLC a private road subdivision off of a County Road 9 gravel road in Oxford Township. The road is 26 feet in width and land on the County Road can only be used as residential and is not intended for commercial use. J.A.R. is asking that the road be left as it is and not updated to a township road, although it can be updated in the future, but for now is intended to be a private road.

“It continues to be very well maintained and there’s no doubt that it will be in the future,” said Tiffany Swigert, Regional Planning Director.

During the meeting, the commissioners also approved: • A motion to sign Resolution 2013-36 for the surface application of salt brine to be applied to the private road leading to and around the Porcher Trailer Park located at 60040 TR 104, Newcomerstown, Ohio • A motion to sign Resolution 2013-37 requesting County Auditor certification for a 2.8 Mill levy for DD/for the maintenance and operation of Hopewell School, Workshop and

Lewis & Clark Expedition scout, York, to visit Coshocton COSHOCTON — Ohio Chautauqua, presented by the Ohio Humanities Council, will be in Coshocton July 23-27 presenting When Ohio Was the Western Frontier. Marvin Jefferson, from Mont Clair, NJ, will be among the fiveperson troupe and will portray York, a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

Jefferson has been a professional actor and director for over 30 years and has toured with chautauqua programs in eight states. He was introduced to first-person interpretation in 1997 when he was asked by the New Jersey Historical Commission to develop Paul Robeson as a character.

“My first time to Ohio was in 2010 when I toured with Ohio Chautauqua as Paul Robeson,” said Jefferson. “I have also portrayed Martin Luther King, Jr. many times as both an actor and as a chautauqua character.”

Jefferson says that York is a new character for him. “Ohio Chautauqua suggested this character to me to develop,” he said. “Last summer was my first time to portray York, and it went over really well with audiences.”

York was a bit difficult for Jefferson to research and develop since there was no written material available written by York himself.

“Many people have no idea how integral York was to the Lewis and Clark Expedition,” said Jefferson. “York’s story is very riveting and audience members learn a lot about York’s interactions with the Native Americans encountered during the expedition as well as about his life after the expedition.”

Jefferson is looking forward to coming to Coshocton for his first time. “I hope people come in and want to hear York’s story,” he said, “and that they come away with a greater appreciation of him and his contribution to history.”

York will take the stage under the Ohio Chautauqua tent located at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds, 707 Kenilworth Avenue on Friday, July 26, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Prior to his performance, there will be musical entertainment by Wildwood and Friends at 6:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

Marvin Jefferson will offer a youth workshop entitled ‘Telling a Tall Tale’ for youth ages 4th grade and up at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, 142 N. 4th Street at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24. His Adult Workshop on ‘York, William Clark, Slavery and American History’ will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at Central Ohio Technical College, 200 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton.

Along with York, the other characters who

will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. under the Ohio Chautauqua Tent during the week of July 2327 are: Jeremy Meier as the Battle of Lake Erie hero Oliver Hazard Perry; Debra Conner as frontier aristocrat Margaret Blennerhassett; Dan Cutler as Iroquois leader Chief John Logan; and Hank Fincken as naturalist and folk hero Johnny Appleseed.

Each of the scholars will also lead free workshops for both youth and adults throughout the week. The youth workshops are appropriate for youth ages ten and older. The youth workshops are hosted by the Coshocton Public Library and will be held at 10:30 a.m. each day from July 23-27 at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, 142 N. 4th Street, Coshocton. The adult workshops are hosted by Central Ohio Technical College and will take place at 2 p.m. each day at COTC-Coshocton Campus, 200 N. Whitewoman Street.

Ohio Chautauqua offers workshops and performances

COSHOCTON – Ohio Chautauqua is coming to Coshocton July 23 – 27. All events are free to attend. The youth workshops are sponsored by the Coshocton Public Library and will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, located at 142 N. 4th Street in Coshocton, due to the need for a larger meeting space. Adult workshops will be at 2 p.m. at the Central Ohio Technical College, located at 200 N. Whitewoman St. in Roscoe Village. These are open to the public.

Evening performances will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Coshocton Fairgrounds under the big red and white tent. The performances will be preceded by evening musical entertainment at 6:30 p.m., which will be under the big red and white tent as well. The fairgrounds are located at 707 Kenilworth Ave, Coshocton. Evening performances are presented in first-person by the characters portrayed.

related to the veterinary medical field. He has spent time in Mongolia, Georgia (the country), Honduras, and Azerbaijan. Just recently, he returned from his second trip to Liberia, where he most recently served as a US-AID volunteer.

Professionally, besides the global outreach, he also does relief and consulting work in Central and Eastern Ohio and New Zealand, filling in wherever there is a need.

The Caldwells are happily taking care of their beautiful farm and their many animals on scenic County Road 193 in Keene Township. In between his trips around the world as a volunteer or around the state for relief and consulting work, Dr. Caldwell enjoys biking and walking as hobbies. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, a trustee on the Killbuck Watershed Land Trust, serves on the Home Loan and Savings Board of Directors and is a member of the National Science Foundation Appalachian Rural Systemic Advisory Committee.

When asked about Coshocton County’s future, he states, “I feel Coshocton has a bright future, primarily because of the people who live and work here. There are many community activities, services and volunteers in the area.

The community’s strength is in its people and ideas and enthusiasm along with all sorts of community efforts.”

Dr. Neal Caldwell recommends everyone sign up for the LCC experience as an opportunity to explore areas of and learn about the assets of the community. He says that it is a great resource for collaboration of people and organizations available and it gives you a greater awareness of who and what is in Coshocton County.

COSHOCTON – Leadership Coshocton County is featuring local graduates through interviews done by Chris Sycks, who was part of the class of 2007. The first article is on Neal Caldwell, who completed the class in 1992.

Neal and Barb Caldwell have two grown children, Kimberly and Heath, and two grandchildren. Neal was originally from Belmont County Ohio where he attended high school at Beallsville, then through a series of events, ended up calling Coshocton County his home in 1973. He is a graduate from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and worked in mixed veterinary practices in Quakertown, Pa., and Kaitaia, New Zealand before partnering with Dr. Peter Bowen in their own practice in this area. Doctors Caldwell and Bowen had been classmates and friends at OSU and were in separate veterinary practices, both

in New Zealand, before deciding to return to Ohio and go into business for themselves in Coshocton. Dr. Caldwell retired from the Coshocton Veterinary Clinic in 2003.

Neal is a 1992 alumnus of the very first Leadership Coshocton County (LCC) Class and says that the highlight of the LCC experience was getting to know the people in class better and to learn about their vocations and work life. The continued friendship with LCC classmates is still strong today.

“Their friendships gave deeper insight into their work and their contribution to the area,” he said.

Also, learning how people can work together in their professions and in the community was a very important result as well as discovering more about the county.

Dr. Caldwell said that it opened doors and avenues to businesses, organizations, and people in Coshocton County that he probably would never have met before.

“It expanded and made me more aware of the positive things in Coshocton, like the parks, the educational system, and our strong agricultural and industrial base,” he said.

Participation in the Leadership Coshocton County class also spurred him on to becoming involved with outreach service. His outreach, however, goes beyond our local community, and he is touching the global community. Neal has traveled around the world assisting with animal health, consulting and directing many projects

Sautéed Zucchini with Peppers and Onions 2 small or 1 nice size zucchini - cut into chunks 1 large sweet onion sliced into half moons 1 can white Italian or dark red kidney beans drained and rinsed well 1 green pepper chopped 1 red sweet pepper chopped 2 cloves crushed garlic 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tbsp. fresh basil chopped (1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan or Romano cheese to toss with above after cooked) Sauté all of the above in a large non-stick skillet until all of the veggies are fork tender.

All kidding aside, the local gardens are doing amazingly well inspite of all the recent rain. The growers and local producers at the Fresno Farmers’ Market have been bringing a terrific assortment of fruits and veggies to market. Beautiful red beets, broccoli, cabbage, dark red cherries, blueberries, peaches, large sweet onions, dark green kale, newly-dug potatoes, red vine ripe tomatoes, and of course, zucchini. My list could go on and on.

How blessed we are to have such easy access to all this farm to table goodness. A person has to feel good about the freshness and quality that they can give to their families. It makes me want to get in my kitchen and create something marvelous! Speaking of great things coming from area kitchens, our market bakers and crafters are doing an outstanding job of their own. I am overwhelmed each Saturday at the amount of work and effort these ladies put into tempting my sweet tooth. The gorgeous angel food cakes, homemade artisan breads, lattice top pies, cookies, donuts, golden honey, jams and jellies, herbal tea blends, and all the handmade items are impressive to say the least.

We are not only blessed with producers and farmers, but we are well equipped with good old-fashioned know how and ingenuity too. Not only can we be self sufficient, there is a definite sense of community support and fellowship that comes along with making and providing quality items for our market shoppers. Take for instants the dedicated folks that each week diligently set up the hot dog stand to help support Martha’s Cupboard for the Fresno Methodist Church.

Talk about commitment to ones community: Howard, Jackie, Marilyn, Jim and Norma, plus all the others that make the hot dog stand happen each Saturday, we appreciate all that you do and you make a darn good coney sauce to boot!

Calling all Kids!. Coshocton Baptist Church and the Coshocton McDonald’s are teaming up to share information about the Ronald McDonald House in Akron. Kids in preschool through 8th grade are invited to join their AWANA clubs. Meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 8 p.m. at the Coshocton Baptist Church on Denman Avenue. Photo ID, utility, or other bill showing current address, and birth certificates or custody papers for children in the residence are required to receive services.

Kids learn all about nature at Clary Gardens

TREES AND BEES Clary Gardens had their annual Kids Nature Camp last week for kids ages 6 – 12. On average, about 20 kids came to camp each day and learned about different aspects of nature including bees, toads, birds, maple trees, and the diverse wildlife at Clary Gardens. On Tuesday, in keeping with their bee theme, the kids played a game called Trees and Bees where half the kids pretended to be trees and the other half were bees. The bees had to swarm around the trees, making funny faces, and tried to get the trees to move without touching them. It doesn’t seem too hard for the trees, except they had to stand on only one foot. All the proceeds from the camp will go toward the Children’s Garden at Clary. Museum to host White Night

At 6:30 p.m. the evening of the event, the table hosts may set up their tables. At 7:30 p.m. the fete formally begins with a toast to the museum and to the splendid White Night. Department of Veterans Affairs announces director COLUMBUS — The Department of Veterans Affairs announces the appointment of Keith Sullivan as the new director of the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center. Sullivan will oversee delivery of health care to more than 39,000 veterans and an operating budget of $164 million.

“We are excited to bring Mr. Sullivan on board as the new director of the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center” said Jack Hetrick, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 10 Director. “Mr. Sullivan has been the Associate Director at Chillicothe VA Medical Center for the past 12 years, and I am certain he will continue to be a valuable asset to the Central Ohio employees, volunteers, community and health care partners, and most importantly, for the veterans we are honored to serve.”

Sullivan joined the VA 33 years ago and has had progressive leadership positions at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center in Chillicothe.

Sullivan currently manages an operating budget in excess of $180 million and a staff of over 1,400 employees serving 21,000 veterans.

Sullivan has a bachelor of accounting from Miami University in Miami, Ohio. He is also a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Certified VHA Mentor.

With 1,000 staff and community-based outpatient clinics in Grove City, Marion, Newark, Cambridge and Zanesville, the Chalmers P. Local youth gathered at Local Bounty July 11 for a kids cooking class. The item on the menu for this particular class was pizza. The children were each given a piece of pitta bread to cover with a variety of toppings from every color of the rainbow. Once they finished putting on their toppings, the pizzas were cooked on a grill and ate as a snack. There will be two more classes held this summer on Thursday, July 25 and Wednesday, Aug. 28. COSHOCTON – The reopening of the ethanol plant is great news for Erik Chaffer.

“The last four or five years have been a little lonely here,” he said.

The Coshocton Ethanol plant on County Road 271 closed in October 2008, but Chaffer has been part of a small group of people working to maintain it while hoping for new owners.

That new owner is C.E. Acquisitions LLC, which includes Lakeview Energy and Crestwood Energy of Illinois.

The 58 acre facility was purchased for $27 million and will be called Three Rivers Energy.

Chaffer will stay on as the environmental health and safety manger, but several of the plant’s 40 full-time positions are still open and advertised at coshoctonjfs.org.

Jim Galvin, chief executive officer and director for Lakeview Energy said the plant was purchased for several reasons.

“We paid cash for it and will be starting

with very little debt,” he said. “We also have another (ethanol) plant in Iowa that used similar technology and was built around the same time as this one. This plant also is in good working order and that’s important when it comes to

corn,” Galvin said. “We can’t get that all locally, but a significant portion of it can come from here.

Our plant will help other businesses grow. It’s as much about logistics as it is anything else.”

He also believes that ethanol has a bright future.

“Ethanol is still in the very early stages of development,” Galvin said. “We are just scratching the surface of what can be done with biorefineries.”

COSHOCTON - Sam Bennett is working on a monument to honor all coal miners and pay respect to those who died in mining accidents in Coshocton County over the past 160 years.

Each month, The Beacon will honor the minors who died. The list of those who died during the month of July includes: • Irwin Emler – July 26, 1923 • David M. Jennings – July 8, 1924 • Lewis Bodnar – July 22, 1942 A total of $60,000 will be needed for the project, which includes the marble monument, a bronze statue of a coal miner, landscaping around both and brick paths to the area. The total project will cost $57,300 and the remaining funds will be used to maintain the area.

Bennett has setup an account for the monument and is selling bricks as a fundraiser.

AddySTRONG Scholarship Fund established CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON The AddySTRONG Scholarship Fund has been established at the Coshocton Foundation by Pat and Stephanie Snyder in honor and memory of their daughter Addy Anne, who died earlier this year at the age of eight months.

A groundswell of support for Addy and her family grew in the months before she passed away. Known as “AddySTRONG”, friends and family of the Snyders demonstrated their caring through fundraisers and wearing T-shirts proclaiming “AddySTRONG”.

The scholarship, which will be a minimum of $500, will be awarded for the first time in 2014.

Eligible applicants will be graduating seniors from River View High School who plan a career in any aspect of the medical or health care field.

Donations which were previously received in Addy’s memory to the River View Schools Fund of the Coshocton Foundation have been transferred to the AddySTRONG Scholarship Fund, with the approval of the River View Schools Fund advisors.
