Gibbs bill to enhance truck safety
CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bob Gibbs introduced H.R. 3093 the Correct the Safety Analysis Act of 2015. The CSA Act will improve compliance and safety ratings systems used by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program has substantial flaws that negatively affect a trucking business’ reputation and safety rating. Under the current CSA program, an accident not caused by a truck driver will impact the carrier’s score. This can result in lost business and unintended economic damage to the trucking industry. H.R. 3093 directs FMCSA to use CSA scores internally for resource allocation that will ultimately determine if a carrier is safe to use. With this revised system, the public can rely on one clear safety designation, rather than trying to navigate raw CSA scores. The CSA Act aims to reform the FMCSA program that is causing undue and unnecessary harm to the private sector. After introducing H.R. 3093, Congressman Gibbs released the following statement: “Truck drivers are the backbone of our nation’s commerce and the FMCSA’s regulations are not treating this vital industry fairly. Everyone wants to be secure on the road, but misrepresenting safety records of motor carriers does not make our highways safer. The CSA Act will ensure the FMCSA’s safety scoring program is applied responsibly to determine a carrier’s safety rating without unfairly harming the carrier’s safety reputation. Tom Balzer of the Ohio Trucking Association (OTA) also commented: “On behalf of our members, I want to thank Congressman Gibbs for his leadership on this important issue. Members of the trucking industry are hard-working people that want to deliver America’s products safely and quickly. The FMCSA’s program has made it more costly to do business and the reforms in the CSA Act will help alleviate that burden.”
Gibbs to President Obama
CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON WASHINGTON, DC – Following the President’s press conference about yesterday’s announcement of the agreement with Iran, Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement: “In the past day, I have had the opportunity to learn more about the agreement that Secretary Kerry negotiated with Iran. My number one concern is how any deal with Iran affects the safety and security of America and our ally Israel. This deal effectively gives Iran 24 days to protest and delay any inspections. This is unacceptable. Iran must agree to and comply with unannounced, unimpeded inspections at any location and any time. “This afternoon, the President referred to Iran’s ability to create covert nuclear research sites ‘funny business’. There is nothing funny about the existential threat a nuclear-armed Iran poses to our allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia. “I call on my colleagues to vote against a bad deal that does not enhance America’s interests or protect our allies.”

In 1972 I was licensed as a realtor in Ohio and have spent almost all of those years with Stoffer Real Estate in Coshocton. In 1985 I attended Reppert Auction School in Decatur, Indiana. Dale Gress was gracious enough to allow me to apprentice under him. That was a great experience. Later that year I was licensed as an auctioneer in Ohio and my passion for the auction business began. 30 years later I have moved my experience to a new office. I have joined the staff at Peddicord Rice Auction Realty. I believe with all of our combined experience we offer Coshocton and surrounding counties their best option to sell their real and personal property. Call our office and ask for Larry Corder. FRESNO - Rolling countryside, fresh clean air, homegrown freshness, smiling faces, and farm-to-table goodness. That’s what the Fresno Farmers’ Market is made of. But what is farmto-table all about? Well, here it is in a nutshell! Farm-to-table is knowing the “what, where and who” of your food. Simply put, the quality our growers and producers put into their products are the same qualities you as the consumer get out of them. The hands that plowed the fields, pulled the weeds, harvested the beans, kneaded the bread and rolled the pie dough, in short, are the same hands you get to shake come Saturday morning. The satisfaction of knowing the care and timely effort that went into your farm-to-table experience, plus being able to put a face along with it, makes everything taste even that much better. Local produce that was picked at the break of dawn and set out for sale by 8 a.m. from less than three miles away, well, it doesn’t get much fresher or closer to the farm than that. Not only is shopping at local farmers’

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COLUMBUS – Eighty-two community partnerships will share more than $6.8 million as part of Ohio’s new Community Connectors school mentorship program. In all, the state received 192 applications for funding and each application included a business, civic and values-based partner organization. Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich proposed the creation of the Community Connectors program in his 2014 State of the State address to help give more Ohio students access to role models who can help motivate and inspire them, as well as help them develop skills that lead to success in school and the workplace. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive to the Community Connectors grant opportunity,” said Dr. Richard A. Ross, state superintendent of public instruction. “The grant application process initiated new relationships and conversations in communities across the state on how to inspire and help more young people to reach their goals. Our boys and girls need an adult, a mentor they can trust, who can help them reach their potential and show them their future.” Dr. Ross will continue to analyze and work with the other grant applicants over the next month in an effort to award $3.2 million in remaining funding to additional mentorship efforts. In light of the overwhelming interest in the new program, lawmakers recently agreed to provide an additional $20 million in the state budget to fund more projects over the next two years. A diverse group of Ohio businesses, nonprofits and others are coming together to help mentor students, including: AEP, Cardinal Health, PNC Bank, Nordson Corporation, Nucor Steel, Highlights for Children, the Greater Cleveland Partnership and many local chambers of commerce. Community nonprofits and values-based organizations in these unique partnerships are: University Hospitals East, Goodwill, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Cleveland Foundation, The United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs, Easter Seals, various ministerial associations, The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Wright State University, Eastern Gateway Community College, University of Toledo and many others. Dr. Ross selected the award winners after considering a number of important factors, including the mission and vision of Community Connectors. The program provides $3 for every $1 provided by local partnerships for activities specifically associated with one-to-one mentoring. A look at the first round of winning applicants includes First Step Family Violence Intervention Services in Coshocton County. The amount awarded was $84,761.13. The program will provide mentoring and prevention education, including helping students write their own empowerment plan and discovering what the students wants to accomplish in the three years of After School mentoring program in terms of college/ career readiness. Some of the educational activities taking place during the festival are the outdoor living demonstrations, wood working, spoon making, throwing pottery, and flintknapping. Roscoe Village is a restored canal town that flourished in the early 1800s as the Ohio and Erie Canal wound its way through Ohio, and many of the original buildings still stand along the original canal bed. Costumed interpreters spin the tales of the early 19th century during a Canal Town Journey tour which is included in the festival admission. A nearby canal boat offers a taste of life on the canal with its horse-drawn rides. On Friday and Saturday evening, the eerie candlelight tour, Spirit of Roscoe, will be offered at 7 p.m. at a cost of $9.95 for adults and $4.95 for students. This autumn tour walks the guests through our historic village while telling the tales of the spirited folk who once made this quaint canal town their home. Reservations are recommended for the candlelight tour. Throughout the weekend, younger visitors can enjoy the kids’ activity area complete with tin punching, various crafts, and photo opportunities. An annual quilt raffle will be held for a chance to win a handmade quilt made by the Roscoe Village volunteer quilters. Coshocton County will be celebrating the canal era by having a festival. Things have certainly changed over the years, and this year’s festival will be very different than the first festival, which was in 1970. However, change is not always a bad thing. The most noticeable change will be the lack of a royalty competition as the original planning committee did not want to give the royalty competition up. They announced weeks ago that the festival was being canceled due to a lack of funds. However, they plan to crown the Coshocton Canal Royalty during October in Roscoe Village in correlation with the Apple Butter Festival. The Upper Room Assembly & Worship Center’s, located at 331 Main Street in Coshocton is a community minded church. Many of us were born and raised in Coshocton County, and we desire to facilitate positivity in our community. We as a church family are not only interested in meeting the “spiritual” needs of the community, but we strive to help meet the financial and social needs of the residents of Coshocton as well. The Canal Days celebration has been a social tradition in our town for a very long time and we felt it was simply something we could not allow the people of Coshocton to lose. Coshocton has lost a lot over the years. We have lost factories and high paying jobs. We have lost businesses evidenced by the many empty retail buildings not only on Main Street but scattered throughout the city. We are stepping up, and with God’s help, we are preventing Canal Days from being yet another loss for Coshocton. We have visions and goals to sponsor more family-oriented events to our community. We are hoping to plan a Veteran’s Day Parade this year as that is something we have lost and we feel it is important. Veterans are a population of people who need and deserve to be honored. We need to bring things like that back to our town. The 2015 Coshocton County Canal Days Festival will be fantastic, but it is only the beginning of what we plan to accomplish in the future.
CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The planned schedule of events includes: a grand parade, a pet parade, craft vendors, a mini museum, a car show, a hula-hoop contest, a kid’s talent show, a cornhole tournament, four professional performers on Saturday and three on Sunday. There will also be a “kiddy Land” featuring an inflatable bounce house and maze, a petting zoo, as well as many craft and game stations. We have also secured several food vendors for the weekend so families can come, bring a blanket or chairs to sit on and stay all day. If you are interested in participating in the festival in any way, please contact The Upper Room by calling 740-610-0082 or email them at canaldays@theupperroomag.org. Forms for vendors, parade units, and mini museum entries can be found on the church website: www. theupperroomag.org . Just as finances were an issue for the original committee, they are also an issue for The Upper Room. We are committed to putting on a great family-oriented fun festival to celebrate the canal era even if our church has to pay for some of it ourselves. However, we know the people of Coshocton are very giving people who care about tradition. We had a toll road on Main Street to fund this event and we have also received a donation from McWane Ductile. If any individual, family, or business would like to make a donation of any amount to help fund this festival, please contact Pastor Stan Braxton or Nichole Braxton by calling the church at740610-0082. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated! Be sure to look for the official schedule of events in more detail next week in The Beacon!

WARSAW – The 49th annual River View Park Social will be Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 2 at the River View Community Park. “I think it goes back to what our tagline is, food, fun, and fellowship,” said Jesse Fischer, River View Park Board president, about the success of the park social each year, “That’s what we try to aim towards each year. There’s a little bit of something for everyone.” The social begins with a community pool party on Friday night from 8 – 10 p.m. Admission is $2. Saturday night, try your luck at Bingo! at
the large shelter from 6 – 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 is the main event. Come hungry as the Walhonding Valley Firefighters will once again be grilling their finger-lickin’good barbequed chicken. There will also be homemade noodles, sandwiches, homemade pies, and homemade ice cream to enjoy. Sit back and enjoy the Walhonding Rube Band from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. and then the Chestnut Ridge Bluegrass Gospel Band from 1:30 – 3 p.m. There will also be a $49 coin toss at the pool where kids can dive for money. The ever-popular watermelon-eating contest begins at 3 p.m. and is sponsored by the following: Designs by Michele, Zimmer’s Racing, Mizer’s Logging, and Janette Donaker. Kids can register for the contest the day of the social.
The event will wrap up with the Beaver Run Duck Race. Adopt your own plastic duck and hope he finishes in the money! Throughout the day, don’t miss the Cruise-In Car Show, dunk tank, and the Rollie Darr Memorial Baseball Tournament. “We are so blessed in our community,” said Fischer. “People care about our park. They don’t just come, buy a chicken dinner, eat, and then leave. They make a day of it and give donations for things like the duck race. They care about the quality of life in this area.” The River View Park Social started in 1966 when the initial park board was formed. Their goal was to raise money to purchase land for a community park. They decided to have a community social to raise money for the park, and the River View Park Social was born. “It’s a good way to see familiar faces and maybe some faces you haven’t seen in a while,” said Fischer. “There are people who’ve moved away from the community and they always know the first Sunday in August is the Park Social, and they’ll come back for the day.” Next year will be the 50th annual park social and Fischer said plans are in the works for a special celebration. Courthouse to have community celebration
COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Courthouse is having a Courthouse Renovation Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 4 – 7 p.m. in honor of the recent renovations completed in the courtroom by Lepi and Associates from Zanesville. The community is invited to come any time between those hours and tour the courthouse, enjoy music by the Coshocton Community Band, and have a picnic on the courthouse lawn. Make
sure to wear your tennis shoes and bring your cameras as the public will be able to tour the courthouse from the basement to the clock tower. The Coshocton County Veterans’ Office will also be open that day. For those who love history, don’t miss the historical pictures which will be on display in the Jury Assembly room. The Clerk of Courts office will also be open with case files dating back to 1811, the year the county was founded. “The judge and the commissioners are very adamant that this is the county’s building,” said Irene Miller, who spearheaded the renovations. Oscar Rose Steak and Seafood will be providing food for purchase for a perfect picnic out on the courthouse lawn, so bring your lawn chairs and blanket. The highlight of the event will be a silent auction featuring seven windows that were found
BY BETH SCOTT
BY BETH SCOTT in the courthouse during renovations. These windows have been completely refurbished and have scenes painted on each of them by seven local artists who took a tour of the courthouse with cameras in hand. The pictures they captured during the tour were the inspiration for their paintings. Scenes feature views of the courthouse both inside and outside. One reason Miller wanted to have a celebration honoring the recent renovations at the courthouse is because in 1875 when the courthouse was finished, the community came together and had a weekend-long celebration at the courthouse. They opened up a dance floor inside the courthouse and had picnics on the courthouse lawn with a band providing music. “This is kind of reminiscent of what happened in 1875,” said Miller. “People celebrated their beautiful building then, so we’re celebrating it again.” During the event, courthouse personnel, the county commissioners, and local law officials will be present. “For three hours, just come as you are and come and enjoy your courthouse,” said Miller. COSHOCTON – Sacred Heart had their annual Parish Festival on Saturday, July 18 with food, fellowship, music, and more. “We haven’t had a parish festival like this for quite a few years,” said Kathy Bauman, chairperson of the event. “Father Victor wanted to start a festival here again.”
BY BETH SCOTT More than 450 tickets were sold for the Baker’s IGA chicken dinner that night. In addition to the meal, the festival offered children’s games donated by Cheryl Triplitt-Wantuck, a kids slide donated by Chip Udischas, face painting, a bake sale, 40 silent auction items, live music by Rendezvous, popcorn, and snocones. “We’ve had an awesome response from people in the parish,” said Bauman. “They’ve baked food for the bake sale, and it’s just been awesome.” The festival also had a raffle for a stay at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites, an Annin flag, an iPod, and a free paint night class at The Frame Shop. There was a stewardship table set up with information on all the committees available at Sacred Heart with the hope that people would sign up to help. All proceeds from the festival went toward the operation of the school and church. “We’re trying to get the community together and try to raise as much money as we can,” said Bauman. “We would like to build on this year after year.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

“We’re hoping that people who are having floats in the parade will decorate their floats along with that theme,” said Chapdelaine. “We’re also planning to have a special wagon decorated for veterans to ride on in the parade.” The festival will begin Thursday, July 23 at 5 p.m. with an eat stand and carnival rides. The queen contest will begin at 6 p.m. in Burt Park. Friday will feature the 68th annual homecoming festival parade at 7 p.m. and the Border highway dedication following the parade at 8 p.m. at the Main Stage. The parade route will go down Russell Ave. and end at the Ridgewood Middle School. Saturday features a variety of fun activities and starts at 8:30 a.m. with the Lafayette Pointe 5K Walk and Run and an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the eat stand. Sam Hitchcock Sound System will provide musical entertainment all day. You can see a full schedule on page ? “A lot of people donate their effort and time to put this on,” said Chapdelaine. “It does take a lot of people behind the scenes to put this festival together every year. It’s also difficult to pick a weekend where nothing else is going on in the county.” Also new this year is a Chamber headquarters building. The West Lafayette Chamber decided to construct a building to use as their headquarters in Burt Park. The building is not permanent and can be moved after the festival. It will be used throughout the festival as a place to draw for merchandise and 50/50. “We would just like for people to come out and enjoy themselves and have a good time,” said Chapdelaine. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com
WEST LAFAYETTE – The 68th annual West Lafayette Homecoming Festival will be paying special tribute to Chief Petty Officer Raymond Border, a Coshocton County resident who enlisted in the Navy right after high school and was killed by an IED during his second tour in Afghanistan. Right after the parade, Mayor Jack Patterson will make the announcement that a portion of
Highway 36 between SR 83 and SR 93 will be dedicated in memory of Border. Also during this time, a table featuring some of Border’s items will be displayed. The theme this year is “Troops of the Stars and Stripes”. “The reason we chose the theme this year is because it’s the 65th anniversary of the Troop Train wreck,” said Ed Chapdelaine, chairman of the West Lafayette Homecoming Festival parade. “It honors all service men and veterans, but the Troop Train was the principle reason we chose this theme.” The Pennsylvania National Guard Troop Train #4 was struck by a passenger train, Spirit of St. Louis, on Sept. 11, 1950, resulting in the death of 33 soldiers. Every five years, the Village of West Lafayette has a memorial to honor those soldiers who were killed in the accident.
