CONTEST The annual rough truck contest, sponsored by the Three Rivers Fire District and the Coshocton County Agricultural Society, was held

July 20 at the fairgrounds. While the threat of rain reduced the number of overall drivers for the contest, the quality of vehicles, crowd enthusiasm and thrills remained including one Chevrolet truck that refused to quit despite attempting to run the gauntlet of speed bumps, hills, turns and jumps with one tire splayed out like an athlete with a broken limb. Camp Invention for children ages 7 to 11 begins Monday, August 5, 2013, and continues until Friday, August 9, 2013. The camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily and features the award-winning CREATE program.

The Camp Invention CREATE program is packed with five days of hands-on activities, brainstorming, experimentation and unbelievable action. Campers are immersed in the wondrous world of science fiction as they use their creative and critical thinking skills to keep them safe and nourished after crash-landing on a strange planet.

COSHOCTON— The Works is bringing the fun of science and art to the Coshocton campus of Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) with two children’s camps this summer. Busy Bee Play & Learn Camp and Camp Invention present fundamental education concepts in the unique style of The Works to spark imagination and creativity. A limited number of scholarships to send children to camp are available through a donation from the Simpson Family Fund.

“What could be more fun than learning by inventing, experimenting and creating?” said Teri Holder, COTC Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives. “We are so pleased to partner with The Works to bring these exciting summer camps to the Coshocton community. It is a great extension of the college’s commitment to education at all ages.”

WEST LAFAYETTE – Jessica E. Clements Williams, a 2002 graduate of Ridgewood High School, received a doctorate degree June 27, from Purdue University.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Capital University in English literature with minors in creative writing and Spanish in 2006 and her master’s degree from the Ohio State University in English language and literature with concentrations in rhetoric and composition and digital media studies in 2008. While at Ohio

Williams accepted a position as assistant professor of English and writing center director at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. beginning in fall 2013.

She is the daughter of Joann Clements of West Lafayette and John Clements of Newcomerstown. She is married to Rick Williams and they have a 1-year-old son Brevin.

To the Editor, Over the last few days, my fellow judge Alex Pearl and I were graciously welcomed into the Coshocton community. We met with your city leaders, business owners, concerned citizens and of course avid gardeners. We saw many unique sites such as Clary Gardens and Roscoe Village, and talked with residents who shared with us inspirational stories about Coshocton’s past and its vision for the future.

Many initiatives including Our Town Coshocton aimed at strengthening the Main Street area of downtown, and the establishment of a Municipal Tree Ordinance to protect, preserve, maintain and plan for the future, will provide valuable tools for long range planning and community development as the city continues to move forward.

Over the past four years, the Coshocton in Bloom Committee has brought together residents from all vocations and professions with one goal - to improve the quality of life in their community. We commend Bill Freund for pulling together a pool of amazing talented and dedicated volunteers who are passionate about sharing the story of THEIR community of Coshocton.

This year’s theme, “Let’s Make Coshocton Pop” was successfully carried out with colorful hanging baskets and plantings around the community. The judges would encourage the community to continue the efforts. While Coshocton has accomplished a great deal, there is still much to be done. Often singular citizens are of the opinion that they cannot accomplish change. Simple things like policing your own properties keeping lawns neat and clean, picking up trash from the sidewalks and pulling weeds along the curbs and gutters can go a long way to improving the overall impression of a community. So yes, one citizen can make a difference.

Many thanks to all of those in Coshocton, who took the time to meet with us, welcomed us into their places of business, their shops, homes and back yards. We sincerely appreciate your hospitality and wish you the best to luck as you continue to work together to keep Coshocton in Bloom.

COSHOCTON - The deadline for this year’s Coshocton Canal Festival Grande Parade is quickly approaching, and if you love a parade, you won’t want to be left out.

This year’s parade is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever, with a large variety of entries and more performing units. You can be a part of the excitement that honors the area’s canal era by joining the parade in historical clothing, a vintage car, decorated float or by using your own original idea to make your way through downtown Coshocton.

This year’s festival will take place Aug. 9-11, with the parade stepping off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. In honor of Mayor Steve Mercer’s vision of recognizing Coshocton as an all-American city, this year’s parade theme will be Made in the U.S.A. Awards will be presented in keeping with the parade theme or keeping within the historical content of the Canal Era in the Commercial Float and Non-Commercial Float category. Awards will also be given for: Best Historical Unit, Best Walking Unit, Best Mounted Unit, Best HorseDrawn Unit and Best Church entry. In addition, awards will be given in the automobile category for Pre-1950s, Best Truck, Mayor’s Choice, Queen’s Choice and Judges’ Choice-Best Overall.

New this year, awards will be given to marching band entries for Best Dressed, Best Musical Performance, Best Marching and Grande Champion.

All awards will be presented at the main stage at the conclusion of the Grande Parade.

1953

July 26th, 1953 The All-Star teams chosen from Little League teams in Coshocton and Newcomerstown were ready to meet on the diamond at the Coshocton Fairgrounds in one of the opening contests of the Area C Tournament of Ohio’s district No. 1. The Coshocton/ Newcomerstown game was one of four in the district that evening. The Coshocton team came through like champions and pounded the visiting Newcomerstown team 19 – 1.

Coshocton went on to compete against the winner of the New Philadelphia/Dover game in Newcomerstown. The highlight of the game involved the old timers game where players 50 and above competed on teams representing the city and county.

1963

July 28th, 1963 While most people were still enjoying the heat of the summer, models at the local Montgomery Ward store were showing off the latest fashions for the upcoming fall and winter wardrobes. L.C. Johnson, manager of the local store, viewed all the new fashions that were soon to be found in every woman’s wardrobe in Coshocton, and promised to debut the new clothes before school started that next month. Johnson had also traveled to Detroit where he had met with 87 other store managers to view other upcoming items for fall, including home décor, winter power tools, and other new merchandise.

1973

July 28th, 1973 Cheerleading camp seemed an impossible dream for River View Cheerleaders, but because of the generosity of Jerry B. Jones who let the girls use his facilities for a car wash at Jones Marathon to raise enough money for camp, Advisor Judy Mikesell said she felt that camp was much more meaningful to the girls because they had worked hard for it. The cheerleaders presented Jones with a plaque of appreciation. They won three ribbons at camp, one for excellence and two for outstanding performances. They were also awarded for improvement in cheerleading skills.

July 24th, 1983 When Chris Werley, vice president of Coshocton Lumber, had witnessed entertainment by balloonist Robert Zanella, Professor Zee, at the Home Show, Werley became fascinated by balloons and started a new hobby. He enjoyed the balloon show so much that he tried to find balloon races in the nearby area, but they were always rained out, so Werley decided to start one here in Coshocton. He organized a balloon race at the fairgrounds the previous year, drawing in 13 balloonists. It was such a success that another one was planned for this year. Werley received his balloon pilot license in July so he would be able to fly in this year’s event.

Girl Scout Emily White of Troop 2527 received a $100 donation from Major Amy Massaglia of Columbus. The donation was to purchase Girl Scout cookies to be donated to the major’s units in Kuwait/Iraq.

Additional donations from customers and sister Girl Scout Troup 468 were used to purchase surplus boxes of cookies to add to the shipment. VFW 1330 also made a donation to cover the expense of shipping the cookies to Kuwait. Cookies were also given to another of the major’s units that just returned to the United States in June. Girl Scout Troop 2527 has completed several other projects to show its support for the military such as: Wal-Mart’s Salute to Veterans Ceremony, Relay for Life Honor Guard Ceremony, cards to veterans on Veteran’s Day, letters and cards of condolence to a local fallen soldier’s family, donation of nuts/candy to the Elks for military care packages, Coshocton County Memorial Day Parade and the Coshocton County Veterans Service Office veterans ceremony balloon launch. COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met on Wednesday, July 17 for their bi-weekly meeting to discuss the 2014 estimated budget presented by Robin Schonauer, budget director. She reported that county departments estimated a 2014 budget of $10,157,728, which is up $363,000 from last year. This increase is mostly due to the fact that departments are expecting retirements this year.

The total revenue estimate is also up $300,000 from 2013.

There is also an estimated 4.3% increase in sales taxes and $400 increase for casino taxes next year. A good carry-over is expected for 2014.

The total county estimated budget for 2014 is $41,661,107, which includes the general and non-general fund with $31,503,379 estimated for the non-general fund.

The commissioners also approved: - A motion to sign Resolution 2013-38 to submit the Annual 2014 Budget to the Coshocton County Budget Commission for their consideration.

- A motion to sign a Commendation for Raise Your Voice Self-Advocates on their accomplishment of organizing and presenting Freedom Fest 2013.

- A motion to approve the road vacation request of the Crawford Township Trustees for the vacation of all of third alley located between lots six and seven, all of second alley located between lots four and five, and all of first alley located between lots two and three, located in the unincorporated Village of New Bedford, Crawford Township, Coshocton County, Ohio.

Entries wanting to be judged must be in line by 6:30 p.m. and those not being judged should be in line by 6:40 p.m. according to organizer Ed Chapdelaine.

“It’s like a military operation,” he said.

“You do all this planning and layout and then on parade day after the last vehicle has gone by you see that people enjoyed it and that makes me feel good.”

The parade moves up Russell Avenue, but Chapdelaine said the side streets are utilized to get it organized.

“We try to organize it so that you have continuing change,” he said. “You don’t want all the vehicles, fire trucks, horses and queens together. You want a mixture so it has variation and doesn’t feel like a boring parade.”

In the past, the parade has had as many as 150 entries and Chapdelaine said he will let people in even right before start time.

“Nobody is refused entry,” he said. “If you come to me at 6:45 p.m., I’ll put you at the end of

the line as long as your entry is legal and moral.

We always have a wide variety of units with generally lots of hometown kids. It’s colorful and a number of groups pass out candy. If you have a sweet tooth, it’s the place to come.”

Saturday there also will be a three on three basketball tournament and car show.

“It’s something for kids to do and gets people involved,” said Ardie Varian, an organizer of the event.

The contest is in the administration building parking lot and has divisions for 11 and under, 12-15 and 16 and over. Winners in the 16 and over division will receive a monetary prize.

Sign up is at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Varian at 545-9748.

The top 10 vehicles at the car show will receive plaques and there will be a 50/50 drawing and prizes. Any make and model is welcome and there is a $10 registration fee.

“I enjoy the camaraderie, meeting new people and getting different ideas at car shows,” he said.

During the festival, new West Lafayette royalty also will be named, there will be nightly entertainment and delicious food cooked by hometown groups.

“I enjoy seeing everyone come out for the festival and that it has a lot of community involvement,” Varian said.

13 West Lafayette Festival

WEST LAFAYETTE – There will be games, food, contests, entertainment and more at the 66th annual West Lafayette Homecoming Festival, which is held Thursday through Saturday, July 25–27.

One of the highlights of the festival is the baking contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

“We encourage people to try,” said Janette Schrock, who is coordinating the contest. “A lot of people say they can’t cook or aren’t good enough, but you never know unless you try.”

The contest has two divisions: Children up to age 17 and adults age 18 and up. The adults can enter two crust fruit pies, cookies (drop or bar) and cakes or cupcakes and the children’s division features cakes and cupcakes, cookies (drop or bar) and brownies.

“You also have to provide the recipe to prove that it was made from scratch,” Schrock said.

The goodies can be dropped off from 1-2 p.m. Friday at the eat stand. Judges will evaluate them based on appearance, texture and flavor.

“The judges are not there until after the food has arrived and everyone is gone,” Schrock said.

“They have no clue whose baked goods they are getting. It’s all very anonymous.”

Cash prizes are typically awarded to the first and second place winners, which are also auctioned off to raise money for the chamber.

“I love baking and to see the kids and adults excited,” she said. “It just gives you a good hometown feeling.”

The winners will be announced at 8 p.m., right after the parade.

The 7 p.m. parade will focus on the festival’s theme, School Days – Then and Now.

WARSAW – The 103rd annual Warsaw Alumni banquet was held May 18, at Warsaw Elementary School with 228 registered members, guests and former teachers. The evening began at 4 p.m. with honor classes assembled in various first floor classrooms. At 5:30 p.m. alumni officers escorted alumni to the cafeteria for the banquet where President Bob Buxton, RV ‘66, welcomed everyone present.

The 50/50 winner was Mary Mason, RV ‘66, for a total of $160, which she donated back to the alumni association. Raffle prizes from area businesses amounting to more than $800 were awarded to 30 alumni and guests. The top prize of a $100 bill was won by Robert “Butch” Wright, ‘63.

Gary Kilpatrick, chairperson of the nominating committee, reported the alumni officers for 2014. They are: President – Gary Kilpatrick, RV ‘66; President-elect David Dill, ‘63; Secretary/Treasurer Lehner, RV ‘66; and Executive Committee Elaine Jensen, ‘65. A motion was made and seconded and the slate of officers was approved.

President Buxton thanked all who helped make the evening successful and those who attended the event. The punch table was prepared and hosted by Ann Tarrh Mercer, ‘60 and Donna Ashcraft, ‘60, and the registration table was attended by Kaye O’Bryon Powell and Joan Shrimplin Lawrence, both from the class of ‘61.

The evening concluded with the singing of the Warsaw Alma Mater, led by the Pirate Quartet and accompanied by Anita Hitchock Mowery, a former music teacher.

COSHOCTON - For the month of July, the Coshocton Handicapped Society has been chosen to be spotlighted for the United Way Agency of the Month.

In 1990, Lloyd Udder and Duane Beck started the handicapped society, with May 23, 2013 marking its 23rd anniversary. It is the only agency of its kind in Ohio to be run solely on volunteers.

Current programs they run are: • Medical equipment loan program, which provides equipment to any person in need • Wheelchair ramp building, providing ramps to those qualifying for accessibility in their homes • Air conditioning, provides window units to those who have a doctor’s prescription Currently, the handicapped society has 10 actively involved volunteers.

Their future goals include trying to get more community involvement, to provide more accessibility to those in need and to get the knowledge of their agency out in the community

The handicapped society will always accept donations of medical equipment. They also need volunteers to man the phone at the office so that they can keep it open later in the day.

Businesses opening and expanding COSHOCTON – You don’t have to go to Pittsburgh, Pa. to get a Steelers training camp shirt. Coshocton Sports Depot has them and much more.

Cheryl Triplitt-Wantuck opened the store in May next to her Coshocton Gift Depot.

Sports fans will find a variety of shirts in a number of sizes, baby items, dog toys, household decorations, jewelry and more.

“We have everything from a toothbrush to an umbrella,” Triplitt-Wantuck said. “We can get every team too. Tell me what team you want and I can order it. I’ll also get deeper into whatever people want.”

In addition to merchandise for area high schools, college and pro teams, the store also has a small selection of Under Armour and items to celebrate hobbies such as a love of the outdoors, music and dance.

“It isn’t just about sports,” Triplitt-Wantuck said. “I call it leisure time.”

She also has gifts for the military men and women and veterans in your life.

“I know you can go online, but here you can come in and actually look at things,” TriplittWantuck said.

She also plans to have autograph sessions and encourages customers to shoot some pool and play a little basketball in the back of the store.

The Coshocton Sports Depot is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and closed Sundays.

“Everything is at reasonable prices,” TriplittWantuck said. “Just come in and look around.”

In front of both of her stores, customers also will find a collection of antiques from Jane and Doug Johnston who own Shaker House Antiques in Roscoe and The Vault 416 on Main Street. She also plans to showcase a quilt from Mercantile on Main. The displays are a way for area stores to help promote each other, which is a

concept Triplitt-Wantuck, will encourage others to do during Our Town Coshocton meetings.

Our Town Coshocton will hold community meetings at 5 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month at Frontier Power. Everyone, including business and property owners and the general public, are welcome to come and discuss ideas to unify Roscoe, Main Street and Second Street.

Perry was portrayed on Tuesday evening, but more can be learned about Logan on

Wednesday, York on Friday and Appleseed on Saturday. All performances are free and start at 7:30 p.m. but attendees are encouraged to come enjoy live music at 6:30 p.m.

The Ohio Historical Society site marker at the Plainfield Cemetery reads: This cemetery, established in 1810, is the final resting place of many founders of Plainfield and Linton townships. Besides the early date of its founding, it is notable for the number of armed forces veterans interred here, who represent every major conflict since the Revolutionary War. The graves of 89 Civil War soldiers - a number nearly equal to those of veterans involved - all other wars between the War 1812 and the Vietnam War - indicate the depth of Plainfield’s involvement in that conflict.

Also, at the cemetery, two monuments honor William “Fighting Bill” Reed. He was a blacksmith and when the War of 1812 was declared Reed enlisted with General William Henry Harrison’s Company. He saw a great deal of service with Commodore Perry, including the famous Battle of Lake Erie fought on Sept. 10, 1813. “We have met the enemy and they are ours,” was the dispatch from Perry to General Harrison.

Reed was a survivor of Perry’s flagship, the Lawrence, which was cut to pieces by Captain Barclay’s British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie. Reed helped row Perry and the United States Flag to a nearby ship, the Niagara, while under intense enemy gunfire.

William “Fighting Bill” Reed is the second oarsman in the painting of Perry’s victory in the famous Battle of Lake Erie. The painting hangs in the rotunda of the Ohio Statehouse.

Two memorials have been placed at Reed’s grave site at Plainfield Cemetery in Coshocton County. One was placed by the Ohio Historical Society and the other by the citizens of the Plainfield community. One monument reads: In memory of “Fighting Bill” Reed, circa 1795-1875, pictured with bandaged head in boat with O. H. Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie, War of 1812.

John Logan. Three times Chief Logan saved Robinson from burning at the stake by speaking to the council of other chiefs in Dresden. Robinson was adopted by the Indians and moved with them to Newcomerstown. Being able to read and write, Chief Logan had Robinson write a letter for him on July 21, 1774. The letter was addressed to Colonel Cresap, whom Logan supposed was the killer of his family.

Robinson remained with the Indians a short time and in 1801 he moved to Franklin Township in Coshocton County to the Robinson section of military land. This land was granted to William Edgar Jr. by President John Adams in April 1800. Edgar transferred the land to William in October 1800. Major William Robinson settled on the land and died in 1815, at the age of 72. James Robinson, the youngest child, was born in 1787, inherited the homestead. The Robinson Cemetery in Franklin Township was on the 2003 Coshocton County Foliage and Farm Tour.

Chief Logan, who in 1774, delivered a passionate speech known as “Logan’s Lament” which is said to be the most famous speech ever given by a Native American, was killed by his nephew in 1781.

The tree under which Logan gave this speech is known as the “Logan Elm.” Today the location is a state memorial in Pickaway County. The 65 foot tree died in 1964 after being stricken by blight and storms. It was chopped into chunks and distributed. I am most fortunate to own one of those chunks given to me by my mother-in-law, Mary Lowe.

Margaret Blennerhassett visits Coshocton during Ohio Chautauqua COSHOCTON — Ohio Chautauqua, presented by the Ohio Humanities Council, will be in Coshocton July 23-27 presenting When Ohio Was the Western Frontier. Debra Conner, from Parkersburg, WV, will be among the five-person troupe and she portrays frontier aristocrat Margaret Blennerhassett of Blennerhassett Island near Marietta, Ohio.

Conner began her career as a chautauqua performer in 1997 after receiving a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to develop a first-person portrayal of Emily Dickinson. She has since developed a variety of other characters including Margaret Mitchell, Zelda Fitzgerald, and Civil War surgeon Dr. Mary Edwards Walker.

“This will be my eighth tour with Ohio Chautauqua,” said Conner. “I’ve also been part of tours in Missouri, Florida, New Hampshire, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and South Carolina.”

Conner says she has been portraying Margaret Blennerhassett since 1998. “The Blennerhassett story is a well known one in my region since Blennerhassett Island is actually not far from my house,” she explained. “This is a historically significant story that involves Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson, and Supreme Court Justice John Marshall. The Blennerhassetts were not typical frontier settlers. Their story is an interesting contrast to the others.”

Debra Conner will offer a youth workshop entitled ‘Inspired by Margaret Blennerhassett’ for youth ages 4th grade and up at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, 142 N. 4th Street at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27. Her Adult Workshop on ‘Women on America’s Western Frontier’ will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Central Ohio Technical College, 200 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton.

Conner hopes to inspire the audience and workshop participants to seek further knowledge about the Blennerhassetts. “I hope to encourage the people of Coshocton to travel down to Parkersburg to visit Blennerhassett Island State Park,” she added.

Along with Margaret Blennerhassett, the other characters who will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. under the Ohio Chautauqua Tent during the week of July 23-27 are: Dan Cutler as Iroquois leader Chief John Logan; Marvin Jefferson as Lewis & Clark expedition member York; Hank Fincken as naturalist and folk hero Johnny Appleseed; and Jeremy Meier as the Battle of Lake Erie hero Oliver Hazard Perry.

COSHOCTON - The application window for the state’s new incomebased scholarship program is now open, and Sacred Heart Elementary is accepting recipients of the scholarship.

There are 2,000 scholarships available for incoming kindergarteners for the 2013-14 school year. Recipients will receive scholarships worth $4,250 to be used toward tuition at the participating private school of their choice. Scholarships can be renewed through graduation.

Any incoming kindergarten student whose family’s income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines is eligible to apply. For example, a family of four with a household income at or below $46,100 is eligible to apply. The application window is open now and will close Wednesday, July 31.

Families can access the scholarship application now on the Ohio Department of Education’s website. The application and all supporting documents must be postmarked by 4 p.m. July 31.

Sacred Heart Elementary is now accepting students who apply for this scholarship program for this year’s kindergarten class. The incomebased scholarship program was signed into law by Ohio Governor John Kasich on June 30, as part of the state budget bill. For the 2014-15 school year, the program will expand, and first grade students as well as incoming kindergarteners will be eligible to apply.

Warsaw First Presbyterian: Warsaw First Presbyterian invites youth from age four through 6th grade to attend Kingdom Rock VBS. Time and dates are 6 – 8:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday evenings, Aug. 4 - 8. At Kingdom Rock, children don’t just hear about God’s love, they see it, touch it, sing it, taste it, and put it into action through God Sightings. COSHOCTON - The Second annual Airport Summer Jam returns to the Coshocton Airport Amphitheater on Saturday, July 27. The event is being sponsored by Jones Metal and Home Loan Savings Bank.

Five area bands will take the stage from 5-11p.m. Saturday night. Musical styles for the evening include country, classic rock, oldies and contemporary popular music of today.

Coshocton County’s Maxine Metheney and the Dotson Brothers” play the opening set beginning at 5 p.m. Ashleigh Kingsmore from Columbus takes the stage at 6:20 p.m. Band It from Tuscarawas County entertains the crowd at 7:40 p.m. Local favorite The Jason Pendola Band makes its third straight appearance at the amphitheater at 9 p.m. McVay’s Country Gentleman, also from Coshocton County,

Tickets are $10 per person and will be available at the gate. Deadline approaching for 2013 Big Tree Contest COSHOCTON - Entries for the annual Big Tree Contest are now being taken. This contest is sponsored by the Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District. It is open to all species of trees growing on privately owned property in Coshocton County. Property line trees and trees growing on federal, state, or local government owned land are not eligible. Any person can enter a tree physically located in Coshocton County whether or not the tree is growing on the nominator’s property.
