The annual JAKES day (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) was held July 21, at the Coshocton County Sportsman’s Club with more than 50 area youth ages 6 to 17 participating. Clary Gardens’ Moon Hike

Experience the sights and sounds of nature at night with guided tours through the woodland trail at Clary Gardens during their first Moon Hike, which is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 3.

“It’s a very family-friendly casual hike,” said Chris Campbell, event coordinator at Clary Gardens. “We’re going to listen to the evening wonders and experience the sights and sounds of nature. This event is about getting the family out for a unique, fun, and different experience, more than being an educational hike.”

The hike will begin at 8:30 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Hikers are to meet at the Garden House located beside the upper parking area. The hike will be one half mile long with stops periodically so that hikers can enjoy the nightly creatures and better appreciate the full sturgeon moon, which was named by Native Americans in the Great Lakes area.

The event is free, but donations to Clary Gardens are appreciated. The hike is open to anyone who wants to explore the wonders of nature at night. Registration is appreciated but not required. To register, call Clary Gardens at 622-6524.

“It’s a very unique experience,” said Campbell. “Most people only day hike.

Hopefully, they can identify some sights and sounds at night and I hope they learn that enjoying the outdoors isn’t just from 9 – 5.

Light refreshments will be served after the hike.

The next big event at Clary Gardens will be their second annual Pumpkin Walk Oct. 26 – 27. There will be a pumpkin carving contest and new activities added this year. Stay tuned to future issues of the Beacon for more information on the Pumpkin Walk.

Mirra is 9 years old on July 30. She is the daughter of Darrell and Melissa (Booth) Williams of Coshocton. Her Grandparents are Harry and Lucy Williams of Columbus, Linh Powell of Texas, and Dave and Carol Booth of Coshocton. Her Great Grandparents are Christell Williams of Florida and Betty Milligan and Cinell Spencer of Coshocton. Mirra has two sisters, Maegan age 15 and Denae age 13.

has raised around $7,500 for the Fisher House Foundation. 2010 was the first year of the golf tournament and golfers raised $4,440, and in 2011, $3,170 was raised. Each year, the goal is to raise $2,000 - $4,000, and so far, that goal has been met and exceeded.

“I think it just shows the kind of community we have and their support for veterans and their love for Matt,” said Jayme. “We have a great community in Coshocton.”

There will be cash prizes for first, second, and third place, and a variety of different games on the course. Call River Greens Golf Course at 545-7817 to register. For those who want to help in other ways, they may donate prizes, money, or volunteer at the golf course the day of the event.

“I truly appreciate how the community has come out and shown support over the past few years,” said Jayme. “It really means a lot to me.”

It is time again for the Women of Witness Helping Hands Bookbag distribution.

School is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22, for city and county students. Women of Witness Coshocton is now accepting donations of school supplies, book bags and monetary donations to help purchase supplies to children in the community.

Women of Witness also wants families of Coshocton County to know that it is here to help prepare children for the beginning of the new school year by providing them with a bookbag and supplies. Contact the WOW office and leave your name, name of the student, grade level and a contact number.

Supplies and book bags can be dropped off at the Women of Witness Coshocton office at 305 Main St. Donations can be mailed to Women of Witness Coshocton, P.O. Box 742, Coshocton, OH 43812.

The third annual Matt Lingo Memorial Golf Tournament will be Sunday, Aug. 5 at River Greens Golf Course with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration will begin at noon. A fourman team may enter the tournament for $200, which includes a southern barbecue dinner.

All proceeds will benefit the Fischer House Foundation.

“Matt was a veteran and he served two years in the Navy and two years in the Marines,” said Jayme Lingo, Matt’s widow, “He loved sports, which included golf, and he loved raising money for Fisher House, so that’s why we’ve continued these golf outings to raise money and awareness for Fisher House.”

The Fisher House Foundation supports American veterans by providing housing on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. Before he passed away, Matt donated more than $2,000 for the Fisher House located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This year, half of the money raised from the golf tournament will go to the Fisher House at Wright-Patterson and the other half will be donated to a Fisher House being built in Cleveland.

“A lot of veterans in this area will utilize the one in Cleveland,” said Jayme.

Indian Mud Run was a huge success LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Indian Mud Run was a huge success for Coshocton County. On Feb. 6, 2012, a mere five months ago, Hubie Cushman, event coordinator, approached the board of Friends of the Parks and proposed the plans for a fundraiser to assist the park with financial difficulties.

The board was amazed by the thought and planning that he had done to prepare for the presentation.

What a selfless, totally voluntary challenge he was attempting, a 5K Extreme Sport, Indian Mud Run, through the hills and forest of Lake Park around the Scarr Loop Trail.

Cushman explained that the trail would have many natural obstacles as well as 20 constructed obstacles including a climbing wall, cargo nets, canal monkey bars, rope walk, mud trenches and water slides, just to name a few.

On Saturday, July 14, this hard work was all accomplished and what a huge success it proved to be. Over 500 extreme sport runners invaded the hills of Coshocton County to (as the theme said) “run like you’re being chased.” They ran the hills, climbed the rock cliffs, forged the canal, trudged through the mud and raced through a “shocking” finish line for a medal and a life time of exciting stories and memories. As I stood at the finish line snapping pictures, and seeing the exhausted

smiles, I chatted with several runners who praised the excellent trails, outstanding natural terrain and obstacles. Everyone said that it was the best mud run they had ever experienced and were looking forward to the run again next year.

Last fall the Coshocton City and County Park District’s levy attempt failed by only 46 votes. This was a severe blow to Coshocton County and our beautiful park system. One individual had a vision, stepped up, took on a major challenge, and has helped the park stay alive. Hubie Cushman, and his outstanding group of volunteers, showed what can be done when you have a passion for Coshocton County. Please join me and the Friends of the Parks in thanking them and the sponsors of the Indian Mud Run. Next year, you will have to see this thing……. or better still, “run like you’re being chased”!

Gather together under the stars for White Night, an outdoor dinner event sponsored by the Friends of the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum.

The event will take place on Whitewoman Street in front of the museum on Saturday, Aug. 4.

The street scene will be arrayed in white with luminaries and twinkling lights, and participants are encouraged to wear all white. Diners are to bring their own culinary creations as well as table decorations and service. White is the theme and elegant the modus operandi. The museum will provide tables, chairs, live music and sparklers.

Wine will be sold by the bottle or glass.

At 7 p.m. on the evening of the event, the table hosts may set up their tables. At 8 p.m. the fete formally begins with a toast to the museum and to the splendid White Night. Live music will fill the street and a salute with sparklers ends the gala. Creativity is encouraged with prizes awarded to the most elegant and the most creative tables.

Tables for two, four, six or eight will be available. Tickets for the event are $10 per person, covering the cost of the use of a table, chairs, plastic white table cloth, live music and sparklers. Diners are encouraged to pre-order their wine to ensure the right pairing for their menus. The wine list will be available at the museum or on its website in early July. Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 5. Professional players must have established a professional status from the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association).

The entry fee is $145 for professionals, $110 for amateurs, and $85 for River Greens amateur members. All monies raised will go toward the development fund at the Coshocton Hospital, which is used to purchase items that are outside of the operational realm, such as updating and enhancing existing equipment.

Refreshments will be provided by the hospital throughout the day including water and boxed lunches. At the end of the tournament, all golfers are encouraged to stay for a barbecue, also provided by the hospital’s dietary staff.

Coshocton Hospital will once again have its annual Pro-Am Golf Tournament at River Greens Golf Course located at 22749 SR 751 in West Lafayette on Friday, Aug. 3 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

The tournament will feature about 30 – 32 teams consisting of three amateur players and one professional player. Golfers are allowed to choose their own teams and a professional player will be provided to each team the day of the event if they do not already have one.

Participants don’t need three golfers to register.

Each golfer can register individually and then be matched up with another team at the event.

“We usually try to have about 30 – 32 teams,” said Mary Ellen Given, marketing coordinator at Coshocton Hospital. “It is a very nice event for everyone there. We have a number of sponsors this year, and we couldn’t do this event without them.”

Clary Gardens had its first ever Clary Kids Nature Camp July 9-13.

Clary Gardens had its first ever Clary Kids Nature Camp for children ages 6-11 on July 9-13, and it was a huge success in many ways.

Not only did children learn while having a fun time, but history was made July 11 at the water lily pond. The Clary Kids had the honor of World Renowned Naturalists, Judy Semroc and Larry Rosche, both from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, teaching their dragonfly and damselfly class that day.

The entire day was hands-on with the children not only viewing the finds, but they learned how to safely catch, hold, and release all the insects studied.

Semroc and Rosche had a wonderful way of engaging each individual child on their own level and not a child was left out. They even acknowledged in a delightful and supportive way Jillian Stamper who insisted on naming every insect that was looked at before its release.

As the day was winding up, the children explored the lily pond, butterfly nets in hand, to study more dragonflies and pond life. Rosche called Semroc to come see a damselfly specimen he had netted.

The excitement grew as they explained they did not think this particular species had been identified in Coshocton County before.

On July 8, Nancy Dillon accomplished her goal of running a marathon in each of the 50 states years before she thought she would.

“I didn’t think I’d be able to do it this fast,” she said. “I’m 53 now and I thought I would be done by the time I’m 60, but I found my body could handle at least one a month.”

Dillon ran her first marathon in 1999 in Cleveland, but got hurt later that year and didn’t run again until 2006. It was then that she decided to set her goal of running a marathon in each of the states.

“At races I was seeing people with shirts that were members of the 50 States Marathon Club,” Dillon said. “As a little girl I knew I wanted to see all the states so I figured this is how I’d get to do it.”

She crossed her first state off her list in 2006 when she ran in New York.

“I tried to go to races that were close to things I wanted to see like Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and since I’m from Mississippi I did one in its capital,” Dillon said.

Some of her favorite marathons were the ones that are like trail runs.

“I love being out in nature,” Dillon said.

“You can trip and fall more with them, but they don’t pound your body as much. When I’m on concrete I can really feel it on my joints.”

Her most memorable race was in May 2011.

“I did Avenue of the Giants in Northern California, which was in the redwood forest,” Dillon said. “I also got to see the Golden Gate Bridge when I did that one.”

Her final state to conquer was Montana, where she ran July 8, in the city of Missoula.

“It was hot,” Dillon said. “After the race it was 97 degrees. I started early so I could try to beat the heat.”

Her philosophy on race day wasn’t to compete, but to complete.

As a speech and language pathologist, a large part of Bates’ focus lies in helping individuals communicate at whatever level is possible given their level of impairment.

She specialized in the treatment of individuals with low incidence disorders including such disabilities as Autism, moderate to profound multiple developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, hearing impairment, etc. Her experience with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) modalities and devices enables her to work with patients who need this technology to supplement or replace speech or writing when impairments limit the production or comprehension of spoken or written language.

Her experience also includes specialization in adult dysphagia, which is a difficulty swallowing as a result of a stroke, brain injury, weakness of function, disease or breakdown of head or neck structures.

According to the organization’s website, the minimum size for the quilts is 55”x65” and there is no color or pattern requirement, but a majority of recipients seem to like patriotic themed quilts like the ones Guthrie sent.

“You are not sure if your quilt is going to a male or female so I’m going to try not to make them real girly,” Guthrie said.

The next ones she plans to work on will be made out of quilt blocks that have gender neutral colors in them.

A special package was prepared for the mail last week at Mercantile on Main.

Inside were three quilts neatly tucked into presentation cases that were bound for Afghanistan.

Denise Guthrie, owner of Mercantile on Main, recently got involved with the Quilts of Valor program, which was started in November 2003, with the goal of sending handmade quilts to soldiers who were wounded or touched by war.

“These are the first ones I’ve had go out to them,” Guthrie said. “I’m very excited.”

She learned about Quilts of Valor from the different companies she buys fabric from that carry fabric with the same name.

“I bought some (from United Notions

Moda) and made kits up,” Guthrie said.

Customers made up the quilts and others donated their time to do such jobs as the back, batting, and

Quilters Guild,” Guthrie said. “To get a discount in my store they have to make a (quilt) block for me. I got 80 blocks from them and I might be able to get 10 more quilts out of these.”

Each quilt is sent in a presentation case, which is like a pillow case, and also has a special label on the back of it. The label has a date, where the quilt was made and who worked on it (first name only). The label also has a space to list who the quilt is presented to, but that is filled out at a later time.

“When you are done with the quilts you fill out a form and then wait for an e-mail to find out where to send them to,” Guthrie said.

Her contact is a member of a National Guard Unit who works to medevac wounded soldiers in Afghanistan. He explained to her that the quilts comfort the soldiers and they greatly appreciate the fact that someone took the time to make them.

“It makes me feel proud that I’m able to do something for the soldiers,” Guthrie said.

“It’s my little way of giving back and paying it forward.”

Anyone interested in helping Guthrie work on Quilts of Valor is welcome to come to the store and buy a kit or sew together some of the blocks she is working on making into a quilt.

Sporting a big smile, 12 year old Liam Entrekin got to shoot a shotgun for the first time at JAKES day (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship), which was July 21, at the Coshocton County Sportsman’s Club.

The event is designed to safely introduce youth to firearms, archery and the outdoors. Liam said of the experience, “It pushed me back a bit but I enjoyed it.” The days’ activities included safe instruction in the handling and firing of firearms and archery, building a bluebird box, making a turkey call and learning basic turkey calls, a tree stand safety seminar and identifying wildlife. Eighteen adult volunteers. including Chuck Smith, above, helped at the event, which is sponsored by the Muskingum Valley Chapter of the NWTF (National Wild Turkey Federation).

July 27th, 1952 Mr. and Mrs. Halpin can literally say they do everything together. Mr. Halpin of Pennsylvania and Mrs. Halpin of Coshocton met in February 1951 at a dance in Germany, where they were both sergeants. The two entered the service the same year, trained at the same air base, were stationed in the same country, and were discharged on the same day. They had two wedding ceremonies, one performed by a German burgomeister and the other by an American chaplain in a chapel in Germany. Mrs. Halpin was the daughter of Fred Workman Sr. and had returned to Coshocton to meet her aunt who was visiting from England.

July 29th, 1962 Coshocton’s first summer speech clinic was coming to a close. The purpose of the clinic was to aid school children of all ages who had a speech problem or who needed to overcome defects which handicap speech. Eighty-two students had attended the summer sessions that had been conducted by Mrs. Lamison, who was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and speech therapist for the Coshocton County school system.

Clinic costs were funded by the Trirosis Club and the Junior Woman’s Club.

July 27th, 1972 The Coshocton Lions Club had a farewell dinner in honor of outgoing Senior Deputy Governor of District 13-G, Richard Mellett who had just accepted a position as vicepresident of Braun-Brumfield Co. at Ann Arbor, MI. Richard Bryant, immediate past president of the International Lions Club was present and said that the Coshocton Lions Club was known the world over as a very active club and that the minstrel show they performed was the best in the country. Mellett was complimented for developing a campaign plan which resulted in a lasting change in the methods of campaigning for Lion office.

Kokochak said the money raised will help out the 600 families in the 14 counties from Ashtabula to Coshocton that his office covers.

“Coshocton has a great bunch of guys,” Kokochak said. “We have a few departments that stand out and they are one of our top five.

For the past several years the firefighters have been raising between $4,000 and $5,000 between their 5K and fill the boot event.

“This is a small community but it gives a lot,” Mills said.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) wouldn’t be where it is today without the help of firefighters.

“The International Association of Firefighters has been partnering with us since 1954,” said Eric Kokochak, executive director of the Akron MDA, which covers Coshocton County. “We rely on them for so many things and when these kids see them at summer camp with their trucks or during a fill the boot fundraiser, their eyes light up. They are actually heroes to them. Without the firefighters, we would be in bad shape. They are always willing to support our cause and I can’t say enough about what they do.”

The local firefighters will help out the MDA by hosting the Coshocton Firefighters IAFF Local 216 5K Run & Walk Saturday, Aug. 4.

The race will help the MDA assist individuals with neuromuscular diseases, send kids to summer camp and raises funds for research on the diseases.

This is the seventh year for the fundraiser, which started out small, but now includes more than 100 participants.

“We always do a boot drive the Friday before, but we wanted to generate more money,” said Rick Mills, who is co-chairing the event with fellow firefighter Brent Endsley. “I’ve been a runner for years and I wanted to do something simple that I knew would draw people. It’s also for a good cause and that’s what I look for when I do races.”

The race starts at the Coshocton County Courthouse and winds its way through the city on what the firefighters consider to be a pretty flat course with only a few hills.

“The ending is all downhill,” Mills said.

The first 100 to pre-register will receive t-shirts and door prizes and awards also will be handed out.

“With the door prizes you are almost guaranteed to get your money back,” Mills said. “The door prizes have been really nice. I appreciate the community’s help.”

There are more than 40 diseases that fall under the MDA’s umbrella.

“We are hoping for a wide range of sizes, as the children in our program range in ages from infants to 18,” Mayse said. “We encourage people to bring us the clothes they are unable to sell at their yard sales or any clothes they might be considering donating to make room for new purchases.”

Ohio State University Extension announces the appointment of Rachelle Goss as Program Assistant for 4-H Youth Development in Coshocton County.

Goss is a 2011 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Agricultural Science. She has worked as 4-H Program Assistant for Penn State Cooperative Extension in both the Mifflin and Juniata County Extension Offices. She has most recently developed programming for 4-H Junior Leadership and school enrichment programs.

Goss is from rural central Pennsylvania and was a 9-year member of 4-H there. She is set to begin work on Aug. 20 and a public meet and greet for her will be announced closer to that date.

Downtown’s heyday was way before Byron Brenneman’s time, but the history of that area of town fascinates him and he wants to share that with other people.

Brenneman, a recent Coshocton High School graduate and winner of the 2012 18th district Congressional Art Competition, is working with the Pomerene Center for the Arts to collect stories and photos of O’Neil’s, J.J. Newberry’s and the Selby Building.

“It’s an entire half block that is totally empty now,” he said. “We thought we would do something with the store fronts so they don’t seem so empty. That area used to be something very special.”

Brenneman collected the stories last week at the PARK space and offered the community a $1 cup of coffee while they shared their memories.

One of his best finds was a woman whose father once managed O’Neil’s.

She stopped by to share an album of news articles, pictures and other items.

“Ours was the smallest in the chain of stores and I think it was in the 1970s that ours had the largest sales growth in one month,” Brenneman said.

He’s also learned that J.J. Newberry’s was part of a chain of 500 stores from Main to Oregon.

“I want to show the younger generation that downtown was something and had stuff,” Brenneman said.

Community members also are welcome to submit stories to the Pomerene Center’s Facebook page or e-mail them to pomerenearts@gmail.com.

“We’ve heard some very graphic stories,” said Anne Cornell, director of the Pomerene Center. “A child got his finger cut off going through the door of O’Neil’s. Some of the other stories are very descriptive of what life was like then. We hope to have our own little museum in the windows.”

After the stories are collected, plans will be made for the best way to showcase the information. Brenneman and Cornell have discussed using a timeline and artistic depictions of what they learned.

“I hope these little histories create energy for conversations that will lead to long term solutions,” Cornell said.

Students recognized for participation in state science fair SCIENCE FAIR

Six students from Coshocton City Schools were given certificates of recognition July 12, from Mayor Steve Mercer for their participation in the Ohio State Science Fair, which was May 5. Mayor Mercer met with the students to acknowledge them for representing Coshocton at the state level and to offer congratulations for their success. He also took the time to speak to the students about their topic and some of the details regarding each of their science fair projects.

Dickerson selected for All-Ohio Youth Choir Brendan Dickerson, son of Debbie and George Dickerson of Coshocton, has been selected to sing with the 50th edition of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. Dickerson will be one of the 200 high school singers from all points of Ohio who will sing with the choir at the 12-day Ohio State Fair, July 25 – Aug. 5.

As a student at River View High School, Dickerson has participated in the Coshocton Community Youth Chorale under the direction of Mr. Charles R. Snyder.

Founded in 1963 by Glenville D. Thomas, the Youth Choir has appeared in concert around Ohio and abroad, marched in a number of national parades, and has sung for several gubernatorial inaugurations.

Since 1992, the All-Ohio Youth Choir

has been led by Mr. Charles R. Snyder of Coshocton. Snyder is the director of music at The Presbyterian Church in Coshocton, and music director and conductor of the Coshocton Community Choir, a 100-voice auditioned ensemble he founded in 1971. He also conducts the Coshocton Children’s Choir, a 60-voice regional choir for young singers in grades 4 – 8 that he organized in 1987. In 2002, he created the Coshocton Youth Chorale, a high school ensemble that includes 58 singers from several counties.

After converging at the Ohio State Expo Center in Columbus on July 19, choir members will spend five days in rigorous rehearsals prior to the official opening of the 157th Ohio State Fair on Wednesday, July 25. Each day of the fair, the

Youth Choir will sing for some 60,000 fairgoers as they perform at 6 – 8 sites on the 360 acre fairgrounds.

They will perform more than 100 performances over the run of the fair. On Saturday, Aug. 4, the choir will be joined DICKERSON by hundreds of alumni in a celebration of song.

Local solider awarded the Army Commendation Medal

Private First Class Gary A. Sines II spent a year in Afghanistan doing his job, but his superiors felt he went above and beyond the call of duty.

Sines was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for his actions on May 27, 2011, when he saved the life of a fellow soldier while under enemy fire.

According to official documentation about the medal, Sines was on a routine patrol when his platoon came under small-arms fire. While working to suppress the enemy, a fellow soldier was wounded in the shoulder and Sines did not

hesitate to assist him. Sines ran 75 meters with two other soldiers through heavy fire to stabilize the wounded soldier until a MEDEVAC could arrive.

“I didn’t know I was up for the medal,” he said. “Everyone really deserves one. Nothing there is easy.”

Sines, who is stationed at Fort Drum in New York, has been in the Army two and half years and is a medic with the 10th Mountain Division.

“I’ve always been interested in doing something medical,” he said.

While in Afghanistan, Sines and his fellow soldiers were, “trying to push out the bad guys and build a presence with the local villagers.”

“We helped them out and gave them whatever they needed like schools and things like that,” he said.

Sines was recently home for a visit and got to spend time with his grandpa Bob Jones, who also served in the military. Jones was in the Air Force from 1951 to 1959 and served in Korea.

“I can’t describe how proud I am of Gary,” he said. “When someone does something like that they deserve a medal.”

Sines is the son of Melissa Sines and Gary Sines Sr. and is a graduate of Coshocton High School.

He isn’t sure if he will make a career out of the military, but likes that the Army feels like a big family.

“I like the camaraderie,” he said.

I do believe that the most anticipated piece of produce that comes out of the garden is the muchawaited tomato! There is nothing that screams summertime as that first red ripe-off-the-vine tomato. When ours are ready, you can find my son and husband down in the garden with salt shakers in hand and dirt on their tee shirts. The vendors at the Fresno Farmers’ Market have a nice selection of tomatoes in numerous varieties.

When folks think of tomatoes, the usual red variety come to mind: Rutgers, Big Boy, Early Girl, but tomatoes come in a rainbow of colors, shapes and textures. From green stripped zebra, fuzzy peach, black krim, purple Cherokee, ox heart, yellow pear, golden and white wonder, and the list of different types and heirlooms goes on. However, the age-old debate still remains.

Is the tomato a vegetable or a fruit? Personally, I consider it a veggie, so I did a little research to find the truth. According to the encyclopedia, the tomato is botanically a fruit, but for culinary purposes is considered a vegetable. The word tomato comes from the Nahuati word tomatl meaning “swelling fruit”. It was Thomas Jefferson that tasted his first tomato while visiting Paris, France and had the seeds sent

Roahrigs celebrate 50th wedding anniversary Walter “Rocky” and Susan (Fink) Roahrig of Coshocton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their family.

The couple was united in marriage July 28, 1962 at Sacred Heart Church by Father Charles Fuller. They renewed their vows on their 25th anniversary and will renew their vows sometime in the future to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Susan is the daughter of the late George and Elsie Fink. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church.

Walter is the son of the late George and Agnes Roahrig. He is retired from Home Appliance Center. He is an active member of Sacred Heart Church.

The couple has two sons, Bob (Kitty) Roahrig of Newark, OH and Randy (Tanya) Roahrig of Coshocton. They have four grandchildren: Brandon, Alexander, Conner, and Ashley.

X4J serving community and local areas REACHING OUT Twelve kids from the Coshocton Christian Tabernacle X4J Youth Group went to Columbus July 14, to help feed the homeless. They visited four different homeless camps and passed out 75 meals. This was an eye opening experience for the kids. “When you see stuff on the news, it’s hard to believe it’s true unless you get out there and see it for real,” said Matthew Brillhart, 14-years-old. “I am glad I got to see it for myself.”

The youth group is planning more community outreaches here in Coshocton.

Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices serves Coshocton County as the local drug and alcohol council, serving the community since 1972.

“Drugs have become much more prevalent since our incorporation in the 1970s,” said Beth Cormack, executive director of CBHS. “The age of first use in Coshocton County is now much younger than in the past. Seeing drug abuse among seventh and eighth graders in our community is certainly not unheard of. That’s why CBHC offers prevention efforts in our local school systems and other educational venues in the community. An ounce of prevention is certainly worth a pound of treatment when it comes to our young people and the status of safety and security in our county. Everybody knows someone who has been plagued by alcohol and other drug use. It is a powerful source that sneaks

Thanks to special grant funding offered to the region by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction services, local substance abuse professionals, Jeanette Hall and Beth Cormack from Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices were able to travel to Nashville, Tenn. to join more than 1,800 substance abuse prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) 2012 Mid-Year Training Institute.

CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute, held July 22-26, is a unique training opportunity designed specifically for community-based substance abuse prevention organizations.

Participants take part in a variety of half-day and one-day courses to expand their knowledge in prevention science and improve their skills in implementing evidence-based strategies to reduce drug and alcohol use. The theme this year is “Ticket to Community Change.”

“We are so excited to be able to spend a week with other similar organizations from across the country, learning and honing our prevention skills so our community can be a better place, one that doesn’t suffer from the harms of drug and alcohol abuse,” said Hall,

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. 5K Run/Walk. Lafayette Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will be having a 5K Run/Walk Saturday, July 28 at 8 a.m. at Burt Park in West Lafayette.

Registration is from 7 – 7:45 a.m. at the Burt Park picnic shelter located at the corner of S. Kirk St. and W. Platt St. The entry fee is $20 per participant.

Coshocton Hospital CEO Robert Miller and Genesis HealthCare System President and CEO Matthew Perry will present an open forum for Coshocton area community members at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the Coshocton Hospital Grand Central Station meeting room, 1460 Orange St. The presentation will discuss the recent management services agreement between Coshocton Hospital and Genesis. Car and Truck Show. The 13th annual fabulous 50’s car and truck show will be Aug. 11 with registration from 9 – 11 a.m. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 75 who register and 20 plaques will be awarded to the top five in each class. One trophy will be given to best of each class and one trophy will be awarded for best overall. The showtime is from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and awards will be given out at 3 p.m. Classification will be 1959s and under, 1960s – 1979s, 1980s – 1999s, 2000s and up. Entry fee is $10. A DJ service will be provided as well as food and drinks, and vendors. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. Tickets are $1, $5 for arm-length, or $10 for car-length. All proceeds will benefit First Step Family Violence Intervention Services.

Strike Out Cancer. A “Strike Out Cancer” co-ed softball tournament will be Saturday, Aug. 25 at Coshocton Lake Park complex. Entry is $100 per team.

Storm Damage Report. Did you have a building that was either damaged or destroyed by the recent severe weather? If so, Christine Sycks, Coshocton County Auditor, reminds you to call her office to request a destroyed property form. The office will mail you the necessary form or, if you prefer, direct you to the form online so you can report the damage.

Filing the form will allow adjustments to the taxes you are paying on that damaged building. To report property damage, call Coshocton County Auditor, at 740-622-1243. Damage that occurred during the June 29 storm should be reported by December 31, 2012 to receive the full tax adjustment allowable.

Wind Damage. The Coshocton County Emergency Management Agency is developing a list of damage that resulted from the wind on June 29. This list will be used to help the state to determine if there will be any help from the state or federal government.

The following types of damaged property are needed: Primary residence that had damage of more than 25 percent of its value; business that had physical damage to the building; and business that had loss of business due to the power outage. To report, call the emergency management agency at 622-1984 or e-mail ccema@coshoctoncounty.net. They will need owner’s name, phone number, address, home or business and brief description of the damage. The Coshocton County EMA may inspect the damage.

Volunteers Needed. Second Chance Homeless Shelter is currently accepting volunteer applications for part-time Resident Advisor positions. The volunteer Resident Advisor helps to provide a positive emotional and social living environment for residents of the shelter. Board of Health meeting. The regular meetings for the Coshocton County Board of Health will now be the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. in the County Services Building.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The Coshocton Senior Center is a distribution site for free monthly groceries for low income senior citizens (age 60 and over) living in Coshocton County. Benefits Habitat for Humanity Golf Scramble. Habitat for Humanity will have their 7th annual golf scramble at River Greens Golf Course on Saturday, July 28.

Teams may consist of all male, all female, or coed and will tee off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. A grand prize of $1,000 will be given away to the lucky team who wins the drawing at the end of the tournament. The entry fee is $240 per team and includes entry in the grand prize drawing, 18 hole of golf, cart, beverage, and a meal following the event.

Raffles, skill competitions, skins pot, 50/50 drawing, food, and lots of fun and golf will highlight the day. All proceeds to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County. Event added to WL Festival CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

Havin’ a rough time

This year a quarter auction/raffle will be added to Saturday’s events at the West Lafayette Homecoming Festival.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, there will be Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, photographers, Tupperware, Avon, tutus, crocheted specialty items, Thirty-one, Pink Zebra, Scentsy, Uppercase Living and so much more under the tent to be given away for quarters.

A quarter auction works by first having an item up for auction explained by the vendor/announcer. The bid is established (one quarter for items valued under $20, two for under $40, etc). A cup is passed across the row and if you are interested in bidding, you deposit the change and raise your number. After everyone has a chance to “bid” a number is drawn. If that number matches yours, you win.

Tickets are available by calling Jessie Tubbs at 610-7433 or at the tent between 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. Also, feel free to call for information about being a vendor.

The contest follows the annual car show that is sponsored by the Three Rivers Fire District as a fundraiser.
