Gospel Hill Celebrates 35 Year Anniversary a hotly contested corn hole tournament where world class athlete Brian Olinger will be pleased to learn that wife Jaime can hold up her end in Coshocton County’s adopted sport of corn hole.

Gospel Hill Ministry is the manifestation of a vision that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to Davis many years ago. The vision was of a ministry, not a church. According to Davis, that is what makes Gospel Hill different from a local church. It is an outreach ministry with different phases, such as, Outdoor services, crusades, the Gospel Hill radio program, and the lighthouse among others.

Davis explained that the Lord showed him the vision of a lighthouse standing on top of Gospel Hill. A lighthouse out in the middle of a wooded area in east central Ohio, miles away from any ocean, lake or sea, would be unique and different. Something different or seemingly out of place attracts people.

The lighthouse would be a place of prayer as well. Davis explains that from the first moments following the experience of seeing this vision of the lighthouse until today, the thought of having a prayer room in the lighthouse has been the driving force. But most of all, it (the lighthouse) will represent (a symbol of) Jesus, the true “lighthouse to the world.”

Members of Gospel Hill release 35 balloons to celebrate 35th Anniversary

Members of the Gospel Hill Ministry clapped as 35 helium filled balloons rose into the skies and headed north following a special Sunday service and covered dish lunch on Sunday, July 20th.

The balloons were launched following a brief but sudden downpour from the top of the lighthouse by Evangelist Ron Davis and members of the ministry. The attendees then enjoyed volleyball and

Okay, as you can see, I have changed the name of this article from “Publisher’s Update” to something that seems to fit my seemingly random and unsystematic approach to this column. The definition of musings, according to the Encarta online dictionary is “thoughts, especially when aimless and unsystematic.

Well, that’s perfect for this column, I think!

The list of events happening in our community seems almost endless when I look back on the past two weeks and look ahead to the next couple of weeks.

Revival on the court square, calliopes and organs at Roscoe Village, family fun day to benefit the Coshocton Christian School,

golf tournaments, rough truck and car show at the fairgrounds, toys for tots drive, ice cream socials, and so on. Looking ahead, First Friday, Towne Centre Sidewalk Sales, King Midget Car Club Jamboree, West Lafayette Hometown Festival, Carnival at the fairgrounds and Canal Days Festival in downtown Coshocton with the parade! You can find more details about these events in this issue of Coshocton County’s only locally owned newspaper, The Beacon.

Again, we’re not Columbus, but there are certainly more than enough events to keep most people satisfied and as entertained as you want to be!

Have you had the opportunity to see the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight” yet? It lives up to its’ name - dark. Recently passed Heath Ledger will most probably win an academy award for his role as “The Joker”. He plays a more sinister and twisted Joker than in previous Batman movies and a comparison to the Batman television series that I enjoyed as a child is not a comparison at all. Somehow, I always thought the “poof”, “bam” and “splats” that filled the screen were cool. I know that this shows my age – but something has to!

There are several articles of interest in this issue of The Beacon – an update from the Coshocton County Commissioners, an article on how the main street merchants, chamber of commerce, Towne Centre Association, and the Coshocton County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau are continuing to work together for progress and the betterment of our community. I know you will enjoy the article by Ginger Reiss on “Granpa’s Bridge”.

The spelling is purposeful and I will let you read the article to find out the significance of the misspelling.

Speaking more specifically about The Beacon, our distribution continues to climb and is now around 11,000 copies with this issue. We continue to hear positive comments about the paper and greatly appreciate the support of our advertisers and the community.

Dr. Phillip Prater, DDS, joins Todd Salmans DDS LLC practice. Prater is shown working on Rebecca Bice, dental assistant at the practice.

Todd Salmans DDS LLC has announced that Phillip Prater, DDS, has joined the dental practice, which is located at 229 South Fourth Street in Coshocton. Prater grew up in Coshocton and, like Salmans, attended The Ohio State University college of dentistry. Prater has worked at the Coshocton Children’s dental clinic during dental school and was awarded the Ohio State community service award for his work in that area. Prater stated

that “I have really enjoyed being back home and being able to provide dental care here in Coshocton”. Salmans stated that “with two dentists in the practice, it will allow us to see patients in a timely manner, keeping with our goal of providing the best dental care possible”.

The practice has six employees and is open Monday thru Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and Friday from 8 am to noon.

Elise Miller, owner of Three Rivers Infusion and Miller Pharmacy has benefited from her membership in both the Chamber and the Towne Centre Association, and currently serves the association as its president. “We are really fortunate to have so many committed people – both merchants and professionals – in the association,” she explains. “Plus we have a group called the Friends of Towne Centre which basically are other interested parties who come on board to help us throughout the year.” According to Miller, these entities and individuals, though not located on Main Street, share the desire to keep the downtown Coshocton area both inviting. They include MFM, Auer Ace Hardware, Buckeye Fabricators, The Coshocton Foundation, Frontier Power, the Jeff Drennen dealerships, MFM Building Products, Smurfit Stone Container and United Way of Coshocton County.

Towne CentreAssociation, formerly known by many names including the Downtown Merchants Association, has been working for the downtown area for over 40 years.

It’s specific mission is beautification and maintenance of the downtown area. To accomplish this mission, it relies on its two primary fundraising events – the recent 4th of July celebration at the fairgrounds and the Miracle on Main Street Christmas celebration. However, in order for it to keep the downtown area looking clean and spiffy, it must instill pride in the hearts of those who do business and shop there.

That’s where the other partners come in.

Coshocton’s Convention and Visitors Bureau started the First Friday celebrations in 2006 to bring visitors from outside Coshocton into the downtown area each month. “What actually happened is that First Friday became become more of a

Making sure that people know about and appreciate downtown Coshocton is a single uniting goal of Coshocton’s Towne Centre Association, the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. “Since the chamber and the CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) relocated to the downtown area a little over a year ago, we are all working so effectively together,” says Carol Remington, Chamber Director. Remington says that having the Chamber in the same building with the CVB, Port Authority and the county commissioners has helped in coordinating efforts for different events and projects.

“Our goal for First Fridays is to encourage the merchants on Main Street to take ownership of the event and to find creative ways to promote their businesses,” explains Remington.

If you remember what it looked like prior to the city’s revitalization efforts which began in 1984, you probably have a fonder appreciation of our downtown area. New lighting, new trees and foliage planters, gorgeous flowers, new sidewalks and storm sewers are the noticeable improvements.

If this is the goal, then Triplitt’s Pharmacy owner Cheryl Triplitt has taken the ball and run with it. Her storefront maintains a warehouse facility and tent that has hosted 4-H groups, churches, schools and other groups looking for a space to add festivities to First Fridays’ agendas each month.

Murray, Triplett and the other Main Street merchandisers are looking forward to this year’s Canal Festival, August 14th through 17th. “This year, we’ve moved our annual car show back from the first weekend in August to coincide with this year’s Canal Festival the third weekend in August,” says Miller. The festival will include royalty competitions, the car show, a parade and a street festival. “The grand parade is always a great family event since many area organizations participate,” Miller continues.

“Coshocton is a good small town,” Triplitt explained; “We just need to remind people of that and rekindle the good spirit that this town had in the past.” Triplitt calls First Friday a “feel-good-about-our-county event,” likening it to the county fair each fall and the Career Center Open House each winter.

This year, the street festival, which includes food and craft vendors both, will be relocated from Roscoe Village to the downtown area. “This is the first time since the early-eighties that we’ve had the street festival downtown,” exclaims Murray. So, it’s sure to bring back some nostalgia for long-time Coshocton residents.

Carroll’s Men Shop owner, Steve Murray agrees. There is so much we have to offer in the downtown area,” he says. “We just need to make sure everyone knows it and is at least wiling to give us a try.” Murray has been on Main Street since 1967 and has seen his share of businesses come and go.

He hangs his hat on pride in the community and a desire to really service his customers.

“In my business, my number one thing is customer service,” he says. “I try to not only instill it in my own employees, but also my fellow merchandisers.” Murray agrees that events like the First Friday celebrations and other main street activities are good business for downtown retailers.

“You may not sell something when folks visit your store during these events,” he explains, “but the next time they need to make a purchase, if you’ve been courteous

by Towne Centre Association. Bring your lawn chair and come enjoy an Elvis Presley tribute by Mike Albert and his fellow musicians in The Big E Band. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m.

First Friday Celebration, Art Walk & Towne Centre Sidewalk Sales

Towne Centre Art Walk Featured at Coshocton’s First Friday Celebration COSHOCTON, OH – Coshocton’s First Friday Celebration continues on Friday, August 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. First Fridays is a FREE event that will take place on Coshocton’s historic Main Street from 2nd Street to 7th Street, and offers activities for all ages including musical entertainment, free kids’ activities, an art show and sale, food vendors, and a poker walk. The Coshocton Community Band will perform on the Courtsquare. The August 1 First Friday will also include the annual Art Walk featuring local artists displaying their work in various downtown shops. For more information about First Fridays, call Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce at (740) 622-5411.

For the past eight years, artists have set up their work in downtown shops and businesses as part of the annual Towne Centre Art Walk. Additionally, for the second year, the Art Walk will include a COLLECT COSHOCTON exhibit at the Civic Hall displaying local art owned by local folks.

The six locations and the artists displaying for the Art Walk are as follows: WILSONS: Artist, Esther Marie Versch, acrylic painting and watercolor with designer, Daphne France LYNETTES: Artist, Dodie Bluck – mixed media and Artist, Bryan Rapp – bronze sculpture with designer, Julie Werley

$1 raffle tickets will be sold throughout the evening at the six Art Walk locations.

The winner will receive a half hour decorating consultation in his or her home with interior designer Daphne France. Ticket proceeds benefit the Pomerene Center for the Arts and Towne Centre Association for the upkeep of downtown.

A ticketed reception organized by Susan Metz and Sheila Mayse will follow the Art Walk from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Civic Hall.

Jonnie Dotson will be playing jazz and blues guitar and guests will have an opportunity to mingle with the artists and designers. The event is co-sponsored by the Pomerene and Coshocton Performing Arts Centers. Tickets are available at the Pomerene Center, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Art Asylum. Twila Krieger is a native of Coshocton County. She is a neighbor of mine and I usually find her baking. Her family all has their favorite of her many recipes and often make requests for family gatherings. She shared this recipe for Peanut Butter Cookies.

3/4 c.creamy peanutbutter 1/2 c. real butter 1 1/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar 3 tbsp. milk 1 tbsp vanilla 1 3/4 c. flour 3/4 tsp salt 3/4 tsp baking soda 1 egg

Combine peanutbutter, butter, sugar, milk, vanilla and beat.

Add egg. Beat just until blended. Combine flour, salt and baking soda. Add to creamed mixture at low speed. Mix until blended. Drop by teaspoons 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly in crisscross fashion with a fork. Bake 7 to 8 minutes until done in a preheated 375 degree oven. Cool 2 minutes.

The Courtsquare Café recently reopened following an extensive remodeling and expansion of the business, according to coowner Larry Garabrandt. The locally owned and operated restaurant employs ten people and is located at 241 Main Street in Towne Centre, Coshocton. Garabrandt stated that the Courtsquare Café “prides itself on using local produce and Pearl Valley Cheeses, local wines from Raven’s Glenn and Rainbow Hills. We feature Coshocton County in our decorating and local artists as well as historical memorabilia.” The expansion of the business opened up the second floor of the 1870’s building at 241 Main Street with the building being built five years after the conclusion of the Civil War. The Courtsquare Café features nightly specials, a full bar service, banquets and private parties on the second floor. Of local note, co-owner Matthew Hinds Grandpa Leroy Hinds had the “Coshocton Business

College” on Main Street from the 1920’s to 1974 and Larry’s Grandmother was a chef at the Park Hotel in the 1940’s.

Garabrandt went on to say that “we are always hiring local people for our staff and have a “Dining for Dollars” program for non-profit groups based in our county.

2008 International King Midget Jam COSHOCTON, OH—King Midget cars will be traveling the streets and roads of Coshocton County August 6 through 10.

Phil Shearrow of West Lafayette, who owns three King Midget cars, is the host for the International King Midget Jam. He expects 70+ of the little cars and says that so far 165 people are registered to attend. As part of the event, there will be a book signing at the Coshocton Public Library on Wednesday, August 6, from 5 to 6 pm with Bob Vahsholtz, author of King Midget America’s Smallest Dream Car. “The Kings were advertised as the ‘World’s number one fun car’ and they seem to hold true to that claim,” said Shearrow. “There is a universal appeal to driving a street legal clown car!”

Shearrow purchased his first Midget in 1998 and attended his first Jamboree in Mansfield in 2001.

“At that jam I learned that there was an Ohio Chapter of the International King Midget Car Club and that they met at various times through the summer,” continued Shearrow. “At my first Ohio Club meet it was suggested that the club would like to see some new scenery, so the next year I held a meet in West Lafayette.” Shearrow says he’s received so many good comments about this area that he’s had the Ohio Club back five times.

Members of the King Midget Club will be arriving in Coshocton on Wednesday and Thursday, August 6 and 7, with Club sponsored events throughout Thursday.

On Friday evening, the cars will be on display around the Coshocton County Court Square beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Alice Hoover will be at the Court Square at 6:45 p.m. to do a first person portrayal of Mary Harris, the first white woman in Coshocton County.

There will also be a dedication ceremony Friday evening for the 1952 Model II that the club will be displaying in the Athens Historical Society Museum. The car club will also have their cars on display on Saturday, August 9 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Dairy Hut in West Lafayette.

The visitors will be touring Coshocton County and nearby Muskingum and Holmes Counties.

Shearrow also had postcards made for the jamboree. “A local artist, Rick Moore, sketched each car and I used those sketches for the fronts of the post cards,” added Shearrow. “The backs have information about the cars and the Jam in Coshocton.”

According to Shearrow, The Kings were built in Athens, Ohio, from 1946 to 1970. They are street legal and get 35+ miles per gallon. “They were originally powered by a single cylinder motor, and a two speed transmission,” explained Shearrow. “A stock Midget will run 45 mph and a modified two cylinder car will run 70 mph. Earl Bosson, owner of Earl’s Dari Drive-In, located on Otsego Avenue, in Coshocton recently observed their 55th anniversary with as special visit from “Uncle” Paul Markley and his wife Georgia on Thursday, July 24th.

The Markley’s owned the drive-in, formerly known as Paul’s Drive-In, for thirty-nine years, from 1953 to 1992 when they sold the business to current owner Earl and

Becky Bosson. The Bosson’s have owned and operated Earl’s Drive-In as a family and kid friendly business for the past sixteen years. Bosson also stated that he “offer a special thanks to Dale Arnonhalt, brother Buddy Bosson, his mom and dad and all our great customers and employees for the past sixteen years.” A special treat was offered on the anniversary of fifty-five cent soft serve ice cream cones. Uncle Paul surprised and delighted customers by serving up the cones adorned in a special “ice cream tie clasp”. I bet it has been awhile since you’ve seen one of those, huh? Actually, come to recall, I’ve never seen one until today! availability of our 911 towers, so we are in the eyes of many right now. This has come about from the combined efforts of many people in the private and public sector and is a classic example of what can be done when we all work together for a common cause. Bringing affordable high speed broadband internet to Coshocton County is one of our highest priorities.

We also want to express our gratitude to the many people of the county who have called in and offered their land, buildings, towers, or other structures as sites for antennas. We are still receiving calls and are constantly adding sites to our list of potential locations.

Since we are on this subject, we want to stress very strongly that the rumor that the commissioners are trying to stop cell phone service improvements in the county are absolutely false. We are as frustrated as you are when we can’t get service when we are out in the county meeting with people. We will do whatever we can to get better cell phone service and hopefully from more than one company. The RFP for the broadband leaves open the possibility of cell phone service being included on our towers if a bidder so chooses.

In our office we are striving everyday to do what’s best for Coshocton County.

Hello again. Another month has gone by and as we drive around the county, it never ceases to amaze us how beautiful Coshocton County really is. The corn is coming in tassel and the wheat is being harvested as many summer activities are taking place throughout the county.

The transfer of the Emergency Medical Services back to the county is now complete. No interruption of service happened and now the EMS is now fully county owned with all of the personnel now county employees. Your tax dollars are staying in the county and supporting one of the finest groups of people in the state of Ohio. They give their all everyday to save lives and bring care to those in need.

We are now looking towards the capitol improvements needed to the program. We are studying current building structures and what needs done to make them more compatible to today’s needs.

We also recognize the need for more 911 towers to enhance communication. To help facilitate this, we have brought Jon Mosier onboard part-time to help determine what needs to be done to modernize our emergency response communications.

With his background in electronics and his many years in the sheriff’s department, Mosier is knowledgeable in this area of communications infrastructure.

Mosier is also helping with the Requests for Proposals for the high speed broadband. We get calls almost every day asking questions on this subject. As of right now it looks like it is going as planned. The bids are due in on August 1 and interest is high with calls coming in from all across the nation. No one has done what we are working on with the MARCS towers and

(Coshocton) - Coshocton County Commissioners, the Coshocton City / County Park District and Coshocton County Engineer Fred Wachtel announced today the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has selected the Three Rivers Peninsula project for funding under the Pre-Disaster Mitigation funds from their agency. The amount of the award is $1,105,518 in the form of a matching grant to assist in the purchase of flood prone properties and their conversion to recreational green space.

The project is along County Road 1A at the confluence of the Walhonding and Tuscarawas Rivers, an area prone to continual flooding. “These funds are an integral part of the project and will allow our local officials to proceed with voluntary purchase of these properties,” said County Engineer Fred Wachtel.

“Once completed, it will allow Coshocton County to expand its park system and provide a safe solution to the homes residing in the floodplain of County Road 1A,” he said. Wachtel

also serves as the County’s Floodplain Administrator.

Coshocton County Commissioner Chairman Gary Fischer said he is very pleased the federal government identified the need for this project for the protection of our residents. “One of our worst fears as Commissioners is to have residents impacted or displaced by a major flood event. This project takes a necessary step in reducing this threat to our residents,” he said.

The project is a multi-agency project involving the Commissioners, Engineer’s Office, Coshocton City / County Park District, Coshocton County Regional Planning Commission, Coshocton County Port Authority, Coshocton County Soil and Water Conservation District, Tuscarawas Township Trustees, the City of Coshocton and several private residents and corporations.

Granpa’s Bridge Bears Testimony to Brotherly Love

How does a person convey to others the depth of love between brothers? For identical twins Larry and Garry Leindecker, of Coshocton, you do it by erecting a bridge… In this case a covered bridge.

The Leindecker brothers, now 63, grew up in Fresno alongside older sisters Maxine and Mary Ellen, now 80 and 75 years of age, respectively. Because of the age spread between their sibling sisters Larry and Gary were inseparable as children. “My sisters were already gone from home when my brother and I were boys,” say Garry.

Growing up together, Garry says that he and his brother participated in basketball and baseball at their school in Fresno and then played football when they came to the new high school in West Lafayette their senior year. They even completed Army boot camp together in 1965.

Larry and Garry even shared a similar profession. Gary worked for the Ridgewood school district in maintenance from which he retired this Spring. Larry worked in maintenance at AEP in Conesville. He retired from his position a year prior.

When Garry was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in January of this year, both brothers felt that they needed to make their remaining time together meaningful.

Garry had always wanted to build a covered bridge on his 220-acre farm. The farm, which also includes the Garden Patch Greenhouse, off of County Road 10 on the east side of town, has a small creek

327-2075 run that runs perpendicular to C.R. 10. “I always wanted to build a covered bridge across that creek so the grandkids could get over to the barn without crossing the road,” says Garry.

Brother Larry wanted to make his twin’s dream a reality before Garry lost his battle with cancer. “The bridge was something that Garry has kind of had his heart set on for a good while,” he explained. “We both wanted to work on it together.”

Construction, which began in early April, started with the acquisition of an old trailer that was on the family farm. With wooden boards bolted together for the flooring and additional walnut wood – also from the farm - composing the exterior siding, Granpa’s Bridge began to come to life. The misspelling on ‘Granpa” is no coincidence. The brothers wanted to name the bridge the exact way Garry’s grandchildren pronounced the word when referring to Grandpa Garry.

Larry erected the structure on the side of a gently-sloping hill which serves as a lush backdrop for the memory garden, just inside Garden Patch Greenhouse.

Larry is very quiet about his part in the project. It’s hard for him to express his affection for his brother without emotion.

He simply says that he hopes that his brother and others who visit the bridge and garden will enjoy it. They will indeed.

Eventual plans also include a picnic shelter at the site. “I would love for people in the community to consider this site nice enough for family photos and photos of other significant occasions,” says Gaumer, co-owner of Garden Patch and long-time friend of Kristy’s. “We want the garden to live and to be a continual reminder to everyone who visits it of family and the love within families.” Gaumer says she has always been made to feel like she is Garry’s adopted daughter.

The men started their families at about the same time, attended their children’s events and ball games together and attended the same church – Fresno Bible Church. They built many things together, which had been a passion for both since boyhood. “We used to build all kinds of things together,” says Garry. “I was more of the sledge-hammer man and he [Larry] is more of the carpenter man,” he joked.

Together the two built their church a special 25-foot train for children to ride in at local festivals and parades. Called the Happy Day Express, the train was named after a beloved evangelical hymn.

“Folks in school who knew us said they could always tell us apart, even though we were identical,” laughed Larry. Whether or not they bore a strong or not-so-strong resemblance, everyone agreed that their bond was very tight.

Carter Eberwine Competing at High Level in 4-H Trapshooting

Carter Eberwine is doing competitive trapshooting as a Self-Determined 4-H project this year. He became interested in trapshooting through the Scholastic Clay Target Program which teaches youth trapshooting safety and allows them to become more skilled at trapshooting through supervised instruction from experienced shooters. After three years in the Scholastic Clay Target Program, he wanted to compete at a higher level.

Eberwine shot his first 100 straight at The Great Lakes Grand American Shoot in Michigan on May 24th. At the Pennsylvania State Shoot, he entered five events and was Junior Champion in two and Junior Runner-Up in two more.

At the Ohio State Shoot, he competed in all events and was High Overall Junior with 1130 out of 1200. He was Resident

Junior Runner-Up in the Ohio Singles Class Championship with 196 out of 200 and was Junior Winner of the Singles Championship with another 196 out of 200.

By winning the Ohio Singles Championship, he is eligible to compete in the Champion of Champions Event at the Grand American World Championship at Sparta, Illinois next month. Also at the Ohio State Shoot, Carter won a one-hour Personal Shooting Instruction from Leo Harrison III, Captain of the All American Team.

Eberwine also shot all events at the Kentucky State Shoot where he broke 939 out of 1000 targets and won the “C” class of the Kentucky Doubles Championship with 96 out of 100. Last week her shot in the West Virginia State Shoot where he was Open High Gun in the Fred Dague Handicap with 99 out of 100 and the Open Junior Champion in the West Virginia Doubles Championship with 94 out of 100. He was also High Overall Junior with 946 out of 1000. Eberwine is looking forward to attempting to improve his average at the Grand American World Championships next month.

The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and Nationwide sponsor the program and provide full scholarships for two 4-H members from each of Ohio’s 88 counties. Evan Ehman of Spring Mt. Climbers 4-H Club has nine years of 4-H project work in the areas of market hogs, turkeys, dairy goats, breeding sheep, fancy poultry, and dog obedience. He is active in the County 4-H Junior Leadership Club; member of the 4-H Beef, Sheep, and Swine Teen Board; and a representative on Junior Fair Board. His parents are Cindy and Lewis Ehman of Warsaw.

Jordain Latham is the son of Amy and Rodney Latham of Dresden. He is a seven-year member of Country Kids 4-H Club. His projects have included market

hogs, woodworking, tree planting, corn, welding, and gardening. He has served as a camp counselor for 4-H Junior Camp for two years.

Amanda Yoder is an eleven-year member of Millcreek Valley 4-H Club and the daughter of Ro and Keith Yoder of Millersburg. In 4-H, her project work has included dairy cattle, pygmy goats, meat goats, feeder calves, photography, keeping fit, athletics, and safe use of guns. She is active in the County 4-H Junior Leadership Club serving as the current treasurer.

State 4-H Leadership Camp is a “learn by doing” youth leadership development experience. The campers themselves are responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating most activities that occur at the week-long camp through program planning committees, leadership family groups, cabin activities, and other work groups. In doing so, they develop reallife leadership knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations and achieve the camp objectives and purposes.

Coshocton County Youth Leadership (CCYL), a program of Leadership Coshocton County (LCC) and the Coshocton Foundation is pleased to announce the Class of 2009.

Class participants are selected from all Coshocton County high schools.

Interested students apply in the spring of their sophomore year and attend the program during their junior year.

The 2009 Class participants are: Lila Borton, Coshocton; Brooke Bookless, River View; Kyle Bradford, Ridgewood; Kim Croft, River View; Kayla Finton, Ridgewood; Andrew Frank, Coshocton; Andrew Gates, Ridgewood; Joel Hamric, River View; Kim Michael, Ridgewood; Meg Shalosky, Ridgewood; Sarah Sheldon, Coshocton; Ted Shipitalo, River View; Ryan Shutt, Coshocton; and Brianna Stevens,

River View. A two-day kickoff retreat took place July 20 & 21 at Atwood Lake Resort and Conference Center. Brad Fuller and Bart Winegar of Move Your World were the facilitators. The retreat is followed by eight monthly, ½ day sessions that focus on leadership skills, team building techniques, self-development and provide for an opportunity to interact with community leaders, learn about the many facets of the county and see first-hand its challenges and opportunities for the future. The program concludes in April with commencement.

Muscle cars, rock ‘n roll music and more lent itself to a successful 11th annual Three Rivers Fire District Car Show, held Saturday, July 19 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds.

Lynn Powelson, Volunteer Fire Chief for the district, commented that “The people that bring their vehicles, attend the event, many volunteers and the rough truck participants make this all possible. We’re especially grateful to John Miller at Coshocton Tire, Rodney Adams of the Coshocton County Fairboard, William Albert Excavating who builds the rough truck track and the members of our Ladies Auxiliary, without whom we would be unable to hold this event. Our thirty-five volunteer firemen serve the Keene, Millcreek and Tuscarawas townships and this annual event allows us to purchase and upgrade equipment to help improve our firefighting abilities and keep people safe.”

Over forty rough trucks participated in the Rough Truck competition sponsored by the Three Rivers Fire District and the Coshocton County Agricultural Society on Saturday evening. The dust and dirt was flyin’ (along with some metal parts!) as the modified Fords, Chevy’s and Jeeps traversed the curves, jumps and hazards of the rough truck track. Times ranged from under forth seconds for the winner to . . . well; let’s just suffice it to say that some vehicles did not finish after losing some parts.

Members of the fair board and Three Rivers Fire District volunteer firemen kept a safe eye on everyone and Rodney Adams waved the green flag to start the timing. Many Coshocton County drivers participated in the event with the crowd roaring its’ approval at the final jump. (That 2001 Ford Ranger I am struggling to sell is starting to look more and more like an entry for next year’s event – all I need is a helmet!)

playing a variety of music, but mostly rock. We’ll have a POW/MIA ceremony in the afternoon. If anyone has a family member or friend who is a POW/MIA from any war, they can bring a photo to place on the remembrance wall.”

Other sponsors for the ‘Rocking for Our Heroes’ event include the Sports Zone and Towne Center Realty. Along with the music, the event will have camo face painting for kids, food vendors, emergency vehicle displays and raffles.

“This is a fundraiser for the Citizens for Patriots,” explained Baird. “The group uses the money to buy stuff to send the soldiers and for plaques for the organization that adopted the soldier.”

A ‘gathering of the bands’ will take place on Saturday, August 9, from 1:00 p.m. till midnight at the Courtsquare in Coshocton. Sgt. Daniel Baird of Coshocton says the Rocking for our Heroes event is being organized by local organization—Citizens for Patriots.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

“Angie Guilliams started the group about two years ago,” said Baird. “It provides a way for local groups to adopt a soldier serving oversees. I was adopted by the Head Start in Coshocton. It’s exciting to hear from someone back home. When a package would come for me, I’d call the

Baird said he even surprised the kids at Head Start when he stopped in at the school while he was on leave last time.

“Then they surprised me by throwing a surprise party for me at Lake Park when I came home on leave this time,” he said.

Baird says he is on leave until September 1 and wants to give back to the community and the Citizens for Patriots organization that helped him get through his 400 days of service in Iraq. “Helping to organize this event is one way I can help give back,” he said. “The event is free to attend and we’ll have several area bands

The Coshocton Alliance Church, located at 730 West Chestnut Street just outside of Coshocton, offered area residents a free car wash on Saturday as a way of showing the love of Christ to the community.

Pastor Michael Bilsza explained that the church wanted to provide this display of love to the community “to show the

love that Christ has for people, times are tough and we wanted to show that there are people that care. We also wanted to reach outside the walls of our church and help our own church members learn more about discipleship. We actually had more people volunteer than we needed!”
