The family of Norma Boals would like to thank family and friends for all of your prayers and help during this last year and during mom’s passing. We’d like to thank College Park Home Health Care and a special thank you to Tana Fischer, Toni Berry, and Vicki Scott for all your kindness you showed mom during her illness and to Hospice of Coshocton for your care and concern and being there no matter the time of day or night that we called you, the nurses and aids showed mom and us so much compassion. A very special thank you to Amy Lathem for not only the care of mom, but also for her care and compassion she gave dad during all of this and after as well. We also thank Fischer Funeral Home and Pastor Bill Dunfee for all of their help and the beautiful service; and also New Beginnings Ministry for the nice meal. There are so many others that we have failed to mention but know that you haven’t been forgotten. Thank you all so much.

Austin Schweitzer hopes to someday make five “zillion” dollars by playing music. The 8-year-old got off to a good start when he recently made $33 strumming his guitar outside his father’s Chestnut Street home. “He wanted a skateboard and when I told him I didn’t have the money right now he asked to borrow my hat and then took his guitar, chair and SpongeBob bucket and went and sat outside,” said Tom Schweitzer, Austin’s father. “I didn’t think anyone would stop and he wouldn’t last long out there. It actually turned out pretty amazing.” Tom believes about 30 people stopped during the roughly two hours Austin was outside. “They were stopping in the parking lot next door and circling around,” Tom said. “It almost brought tears to my eyes.” One person even gave Austin $20. “I said thank you to everyone,” he said. Austin split the early part of his proceeds with his friend Kaleb Meeks, who helped him out when he first set up outside. Kaleb plays drums in the band the pair call Rock On. According to Austin, the pair really doesn’t have a favorite type of music to play. They just do a little bit of everything. Austin ended up using his money to buy

After several years of competing, the sisters both won crowns at the West Lafayette Homecoming Queen contest. “My sister’s done this six times and never got anything and I’ve done it four times and never got anything,” Ashton said. She was named the 2012 junior queen and Tayler was crowned the 2012 queen during the July 26 contest. “I feel really good because my hard work paid off,” Tayler said. “I knew if I gave up I would never get anything so I thought I would just keep trying to get it.” Tayler was also excited for her sister and was looking forward to sharing the fun of being a queen with her. “This is going to be a really good experience,” she said. “I’m proud of her.” Ashton had no doubt her sister could win the crown. “I had faith in her, but she wasn’t so sure because she said there were a lot of good girls running,” Ashton said. “It’s really exciting to know she’s going to go along with me to all the festivals.” The girls are the daughters of Georgia and Scott Shivers. “I think it’s great that they get to do this

View Park Social and Community Barbecue, which will be Aug. 3 – 5. This event has been a success over the years drawing in people from Warsaw and the surrounding communities for a time of catching up with old friends and sampling some of the Walhonding Valley Firefighter’s infamous chicken barbecue. “Without a doubt, it’s the social aspect,” said Jesse Fischer about the success of the event, “It’s the fellowship and the socializing and the chance for people to see old friends. They like to get together and have a good time.” The Park Social is the main fundraiser for the park each year and usually brings in about $5,000, which goes toward helping to maintain the park. “It helps sustain us through winter months and helps us gear up for the next season,” said Fischer. The activities kick off with a pool party Friday, Aug. 3 from 8 – 10 p.m. Each year, the pool party has a different theme. Last year was “Christmas in July”. “It’s a chance for the community and the kids to come and utilize the pool at night time,” said Fischer. Try your luck at Bingo Saturday, Aug. 4 at the large shelter from 6 – 9 p.m. The winner of each game will receive a small cash prize, all leading up to a grand cash prize for the last game of the night. Sunday, Aug. 6 is the main event. Come hungry at 11:30 a.m. for the chicken barbecue provided by members of the Walhonding Valley Firefighters. The park will provide homemade noodles, baked potatoes, sandwiches, homemade pies and homemade ice cream. Other desserts are donated by members of the community to be sold during the chicken barbecue. “The Walhonding Valley Firefighters have had the chicken barbecue

August 4th, 1972 Cleon “Tinker” Dobson met a new friend every time he shook a stranger’s hand. Dobson was the Roscoe Village blacksmith who was celebrating his 84th birthday. For 45 years, Tinker had entranced audiences at Roscoe with vivid tales about blacksmithing in the early 1800s and about the Village as he remembered it almost five decades before, as he had lived much of Roscoe’s history in that time. Tinker celebrated his birthday quietly at his home with his wife of 64 years, Lily Belle, whom he married in Roscoe. The couple had 14 living children.

Have you ever wondered about all of the many herbs and/or weeds that our Creator put on this earth for our use? There are literally thousands of botanical herbs and nearly 100 references to herbs being used in the bible. Herbs for centuries have played a vital role in our health and well being, as well as having many culinary purposes. In ancient times, people relied on herbs for their medicinal properties. You didn’t just run to the corner drug store and pick up a prescription to cure what ailed you. For instance, did you know that the lavender plant has many uses, such as being a natural disinfectant and it can be used as an insect repellent, besides just smelling wonderful? It can be used in teas to soothe headaches and calm nerves. A few drops of essential lavender oil added to you or your child’s bathwater are both calming and relaxing. Or that the common sage plant’s leaves can be made into a hot tea to help relieve minor sore throats? Your vendors at the Fresno Farmers’ Market have many different potted herbs, fresh-cut herbs,

He learned to work on and repair weapons while serving in the military and spent the last 25 years studying and working on weapons in private. “I love to custom or personalize weapons for people,” Francis said. “Best of all, I bring back to life an old firearm.” Noble’s Revived Rifles is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays by appointment only. It is closed Sundays and holidays. The building had to be demolished after it received structural damage when attempts were being made to add on a patio. “No one is at fault in what happened. We only want to get back in business,” Unger said. “We are going to have a brighter future.” Unger also said that many members have come to the aid of the organization and Don Freed from the Coshocton Moose Family Center 935 and Kevin Wilson from the Coshocton Eagles 761 offered to help out in any way they could. He also had nothing but praise for William Albert Excavating Inc. and Weaver Construction. “Everyone has done what they can to help make this a more positive beginning,” Unger said. Plans for the new building are still being made, but Unger asked that members continue to pay their dues by mailing them to 628 Walnut St., Coshocton, OH 43812. “That will help us out when we reopen so things aren’t so chaotic,” he said.

Nurturing Families of Coshocton offers parenting classes She also wants participants to learn that they have choices. “We have the choice to act in a nurturing way or to hurt,” Tupper said. Rohr also helps the children learn appropriate ways to deal with their feelings. “We work on techniques to deal with life and strengthening the family bonds through parent and child communication,” she said. Parenting classes also are held at Chestnut Crossing from 2 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. every Thursday at the Meadows. There also are parent support groups and classes for parents who are incarcerated at

the local jail. “We get a lot of people referred to us from other agencies, but people are welcome to come on their own,” Boal said. “We offer a new twist to old school parenting styles.” For information or to sign up for the classes Nurturing Families of Coshocton offers, call the office at 622-3760. “We want people to come here and feel this is a place where they can share, be listened to and supported,” Rohr said. Nurturing Families of Coshocton wants to build a stronger community one family at a time. The organization, which is part of Coshocton County Family & Children First Council, plans on doing that through its parenting classes which are regularly offered for different age groups. “My hope is that they get an understanding that their children are people too,” said Amy Boal, program coordinator for Nurturing Families of Coshocton. “We all have to work together, be aware of how each person in the family feels and try to understand and honor that.” Empathy is a big focus in the classes, but they also touch on other parenting issues such as discipline. “It’s not punishment,” Boal said. “It’s a way to teach and guide.” On July 9, Nurturing Families of Coshocton started Parenting Your School-Aged Child. The 12 week program teaches how to handle stress associated with raising a school aged child, help your child express their anger in appropriate ways and understand the needs of your school aged child. The class is held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday evenings in the County Services Building. The class starts with a family meal and then moves into opening activities with facilitators Suzie Tupper and Leane Rohr. “Dinner is an intentional part of curriculum,” Tupper said. “I’ve studied research that shows having a family dinner three to four times a week has a positive impact on a child. They do better in school, have less drug issues, better nutrition, less depression and closer family relationships.” The opening activities are used to start conversations and help the family members work on taking time to listen to each other. “Everyone answers the questions and discusses,” Boal said. “The adults and children are then split up. They work on the same topic, but the children work on it at their comprehension level through puppets, play and imagination.” Tupper worked with adults enrolled in the class and Rohr met with the children. “My goal is for the parents to gain confidence,” Tupper said. “A lot of parents don’t know what to do so I want to give them some tools to use. Parenting is a hard job that is 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Alzheimer’s is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. There is currently no treatment to stop or slow Alzheimer’s, but efforts to raise funds and

River View student participates in Peachtree Road Race

BY BETH SCOTT

The AJC Peachtree Road Race began in 1970 and has now been established as the world’s largest 10K with about 60,000 participants each year from all over the world and is in Atlanta, Ga. every year on July 4. This year, local River View Junior High student, Kayana Martin traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to participate in the race alongside her uncle, former Coshocton resident, Scott Duncan. Kayana learned about the Peachtree Road Race through her uncle who belongs to the Atlanta Track Club and travels the world participating in triathlons. This is Kayana’s second year running and she runs cross country and track for River View under Coach Gwenna Neal. “Gwenna is an awesome coach,” said Jackie, Kayana’s mother, “She’s very knowledgeable and works well with the kids.” Other than running the Peachtree Road Race, Kayana participated in the Bear Feet 10K for River View last year. She has also run in the Firefighter’s 5K and recently participated in the Atwood Lake 5K. “Ever since she was little, she loved to run,” said Jackie. “I think it’s just something that was born in her.” Kayana said that one challenge she faced while training was learning to correct her breathing while running. Instead of giving up, Kayana kept trying and built up her endurance. Kayana said her goal is to, “Get a good time on a 10K and maybe in 10 years or so, do a marathon.” A marathon is 26.2 miles while a 10K is 6.2 miles. Kayana has some words of advice to anyone who is just starting to train in running. “Believe in yourself,” she said. “Don’t quit and keep trying.” Kayana came in 20,835th in the Peachtree Road Race out of the almost 60,000 people who participated. Her time was one hour and six minutes. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Brendan Dickson, son of Debbie and George Dickson of Coshocton, has been selected to sing with the 50th edition of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. Dickson will be one of the 200 high school singers from all points of Ohio who will sing with the choir at the 12-day Ohio State Fair, July 25 – Aug. 5. As a student at River View High School, Dickson has participated in the Coshocton Community Youth Chorale under the direction of Mr. Charles R. Snyder. Founded in 1963 by Glenville D. Thomas, the Youth Choir has appeared in concert around Ohio and abroad, marched in a number of national parades, and has sung for several gubernatorial inaugurations. Since 1992, the All-Ohio Youth Choir has been led by Snyder of Coshocton. Snyder is the director of music at The Presbyterian Church in Coshocton, and music director and conductor of the Coshocton Community Choir, a 100-voice auditioned ensemble he founded in 1971. He also conducts the Coshocton Children’s Choir, a 60-voice regional choir for young singers in grades 4 – 8 that he organized in 1987. In 2002, he created the Coshocton Youth Chorale, a high school ensemble that includes 58 singers from several counties. After converging at the Ohio State Expo Center in Columbus on July 19, choir members spent five days in rigorous rehearsals prior to the official opening of the 157th Ohio State Fair on Wednesday, July 25. Each day of the fair, the Youth Choir will sing for some 60,000 fairgoers as they perform at 6 – 8 sites on the 360 acre fairgrounds. They will perform more than 100 performances over the run of the fair. On Saturday, Aug. 4, the choir will be joined by hundreds of alumni in a celebration of song. The Youth Choir’s 2012 show is entitled, “Keep the Dream Alive”, a musical celebration of the choir’s 50 years. Other local singers
