The Pomerene Center for the Arts is hosting free activities for children there from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesday through Friday until Aug. 16. Mondays and Thursdays focus on art, Wednesdays are about drumming and Fridays involve outdoor play.

“He loves drums,” said Julia Fisher. “Last week was our first time here and we made sure we came back. It’s neat when you find something your children are interested in and the community offers a program for it. It’s also awesome that it’s free.”

Children seven and under should be accompanied by an adult and everyone is welcome to bring their own refreshments.

Evening events also are planned at the PARK for Thursdays, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15. Say Hello to the Moon Night is scheduled for Aug. 8 and Hugo will be shown Aug. 15. The preparty starts at 8 p.m. and the main event at 9 p.m.

Celebrating breastfeeding awareness

Community Baby Shower Melissa Haarman (right) talked about the positive and negative experiences she had while breastfeeding her two children and how she overcame her negative experiences, at the Community Baby Shower last Saturday, Aug. 3 at Kids America. Jenny Philabaum (left), lactation consultant at the Coshocton Hospital, explained the different myths of breast feeding and encouraged all women who were considering whether or not to nurse to come and talk with her. Also pictured are Melissa’s two children, Jason, 2-years-old, and Lilleighan, two months old. Local family-friendly resources in the community were on hand to pass out material related to their organization. Dr. Jha, a new pediatrician in Coshocton, was also present to introduce herself to the community and answer any questions. Door prizes were also handed out at the end of the shower.

The Presidential Challenge Citation and The Peace Through Service Award were presented to the club for achieving an array of accomplishments that had been established as club goals for the 20122013 club year. These defined goals were to strengthen the club image, to increase their service, and to enhance the club’s image. These achievements were accomplished through some of the following ways.

One could say that a combination of gorgeous weather, community pride, and support lent itself to a very successful social at the River View Park this past weekend. About the only thing with any discomfort were the dunk tank participants with a breeze and not quite August temperatures.

Jesse Fischer, president of the River View Community Park Board, said of the event, “There are cars parked in places that I have not seen them parked here before. This is one of the most tremendous crowds I can ever remember us having here. A lot of that is attributable to the weather, a lot of that is attributable to the baseball tournament; we had nine teams from as far away as Cleveland here today. But for the most part I would say it is what people know they can expect when they get here, and that’s the food, the fun and the fellowship.

It’s perfect weather, people eat, and they hang around visiting, having a good time. We’re very, very pleased with how things have turned out here today.

He also was thankful for the help of the firefighters.

“The Walhonding Valley Volunteer Firefighters are the single largest organization that comes in and helps us,” Fischer said. “They barbecue the chicken – Chet pulled in at 4 a.m., and the rest of the guys pulled in shortly after that to get the charcoal started. They cooked 720 chicken halves.”

Prior to the watermelon eating contest – that had a record number of kids involved – the Walhonding Rube Band entertained the crowd followed by Chestnut Ridge. In the watermelon eating contest, in the 7 to 12 age category, Sophia Darling was first, Bailey Bowman, second and Cruz Mobley third. Thirteen and up was Kadden Mobley first, Rya Kron second and Abby Burchett third. Six and under results are on the front page of the Beacon.

Duck number 104 won the duck race – with ducks dating back to 1991. Despite their age, the fowl frolicked and fancied their way down the creek.

Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland CAC continues summer crisis program COSHOCTON - The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission’s Summer Crisis Program continues to help those with their summer cooling needs. This program, funded through the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Assistance, will assist households with a resident age 60 and older or those with a household member with a qualifying medical condition with payment toward their electric bill.

In addition, air conditioners or fans may be available to qualifying households if they have not received an a/c unit or fan in the past three years. The maximum benefit amount is up to

$175 for PUCO regulated electric companies and up $250 for non-PUCO electric suppliers (Co-Op) applied as payment to the household’s electric bill. The cost of the air conditioner and/ or fan must be factored in and cannot exceed the maximum total benefit after paying the electric bill for those households seeking them.

Income guidelines are based at 175 percent of the Federal Poverty Level and are as follows: Household size of one may earn up to $20,107, household of two $27,142, household of three $34,177, household of four $41,212, household of five $48,247 and household of six $55,282.

“We have done everything possible to live within our means over the past eight years,” Murphy said. “We have cut 24 positions, closed a school, and restructured our foods services and transportation system. Still, it is not enough. We can’t seem to make enough cuts to offset the revenues lost from the state.”

COLUMBUS - The Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS) have reviewed funding for public schools found in the state budget recently signed into law and are decrying the plan as the worst budget for poor districts in decades.

Tom Perkins, CORAS President and Northern Local School District Superintendent, said children in poor and rural districts in Ohio are being left behind while local property owners will be asked to approve more and more levies to keep their school doors open.

“In Northern Local, we cut 32 staff positions in the past three years,” Perkins said. “Our costs are rising at the same time state funding is drying up. We aren’t alone. The poorest districts in the state are among those hardest hit by this new funding formula. Northern Local has been rated Excellent with Distinction for the past three years. The state is making it more and more difficult to maintain our excellent programs for our students.”

Lori Snyder-Lowe, past CORAS president and Morgan County Schools superintendent, said the state budget is a move in the wrong direction.

“Under this budget, students in rural and Appalachia Ohio are attending schools that are going to depend even more on local property values and local levies for funding,” SnyderLowe said. “An overdependence on property taxes was the underlying problem that led the Ohio Supreme Court in 1997 to rule the way the state pays for schools in Ohio in inequitable and unconstitutional.”

Morgan Local Schools has been rated an Excellent School District for two straight years.

Paul Shaw, Logan-Hocking School District treasurer, said his district will receive $0 per pupil increase from the state in the 2013-14 school year and $20.85 per pupil more the following school year when the state sends the district $81,796.

Logan-Hocking has been rated an Excellent School District for the past three years.

“State lawmakers ignored our numerous testimonies, ignored the documented success stories of our struggling public schools in rural and Appalachia, including Logan-Hocking, and instead rewarded charter schools like Cleveland’s Invictus High School that is in Academic Emergency by giving them one of the largest increases in per pupil funding,” Shaw said.

“Our local communities should be outraged as state tax dollars are redirected to failing charter schools at the expense of our local public schools that are the backbone of our democracy,” Shaw said. “Logan-Hocking has no other choice.

We will now begin to dismantle our successful education programs. We pray for guidance as we make the tough decisions ahead.”

Mark Murphy, Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools Superintendent, said he is frustrated with the continued debacle over state funding.

August 9th, 1953 Members of a Mennonite Church in Berlin had pooled together their resources and had erected a church in Pleasant Valley, just south of Coshocton, in one day. A group of 25 men gathered at the foundation of the church, which had been installed previously, early that morning and by nightfall had constructed a 24x26 feet one-story frame building. Women of the church served lunch at noon. The congregation of the new church had been meeting at the Pleasant Valley School building and had approximately 55 members.

COSHOCTON – Energy and excitement filled Isaac Dickerson’s voice when he explained what he thought of the program he attended at the Mentoring Center of Coshocton County.

“It’s awesome,” said the 8-year-old.

The summer youth mentoring program was free for ages 6-10 and was held Wednesday afternoons from July 17 – Aug. 7, at The Mentoring Center’s office on Main Street. The program gave youngsters the opportunity to learn about art, science, different cultures and cooking all while being mentored by teen volunteers.

During the July 31 meeting, Dickerson worked on craft projects with volunteer Jessie Gibson.

“I really, really like doing this,” she said.

“It’s nice to get out and help people. It’s also fun.”

The pair worked together on a dream catcher after also spending some time learning about Germany.

“I like doing the arts and crafts with the younger kids,” said Raine Lewis, who was one of the volunteers. “It’s fun to interact with them and get to know each other.”

Sheila Mayse, executive director of The Mentoring Center, said about 17-25 children showed up for the programs and they usually had six to 10 volunteers.

“The activities were educational and fun and gave the children a chance to interact with and make friends with kids that attend other schools,” Mayse said. “It also was an opportunity for some of our newer volunteers to get their feet wet and interact with the Littles.”

August 11th, 1973 Van R. Saum was born into a Christian home, but turned away from his faith as a teenager and joined a motorcycle gang. One day, he had a horrible accident and lost his left arm and his left leg. Depressed and shaken, he turned his faith back to God and started attending church. He graduated from seminary and became a pastor. It was during that time that he felt inspired to start a Captain Hook ministry where he dressed as a pirate and traveled with his ventriloquist doll, ‘Sharkey’, to spread the Word of God. He was scheduled to appear at the Coshocton Baptist Church the next week.

August 7th, 1983 With 25 first place trophies from tournaments in Ohio already sitting on her shelves, Darrelyn Bordenkircher had earned fourth place in the Bowhunter Midwest Grand National Archery Tournament in Indiana. As she competed against hundreds of women, some professional, throughout the country, Bordenkircher said she was never intimidated, but never expected to receive fourth place.

She started competitive shooting in 1979, using her son’s bowhunting equipment, who was also a champion bowhunter himself, having won the 1979 State Bowhunter Championship.

August 13th, 1963 After a lapse of several years, the Coshocton County Fair would again be offering a rabbit show. Jack Beck and Wayne Lowery, representatives of the Coshocton rabbit breeders group, offered to present a rabbit show if a suitable location could be found, as the former rabbit show building was repurposed some years before. After a discussion among the board, a plan to provide rabbit show space in half of the building used for the dog show was approved. The rabbit breeders promised to give a good show this year with the space available with 150 rabbits.

BAKERSVILLE - Every year on the second weekend of August since 1948, pies are baking, chicken is roasting and tractors are being made ready to pull in the Bakersville community.

When you talk about a festival with three days of tractor pulling, you know you are in farm country.

The Homecoming starts on Friday, Aug. 9, with the chicken barbecue with serving starting at 4 p.m. The menu includes half chicken, homemade potato salad, applesauce, roll, desert and drink. Most of the pies are still homemade.

Entertainment at the bandstand will be Wacky’s Country Experience, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The 30th annual antique tractor pull starts at 5 p.m. In this pull, all tractors are 1957 or older.

Tractors are placed in one of three divisions: Stock, pro-stock or super stock, depending on how much they have been altered. There are 27 weight classes and the pull usually lasts until 2 or 3 the next morning. On a usual pull, about 225 pullers will pull. Many of the tractors that will be pulled have been in the same family for two, three or four generations. A lot of younger pullers also pull this pull as they can work on the older tractors themselves and don’t have to put as much money into them as the newer tractors require.

The community has suffered a deep loss with eight individuals passing that are connected to the fire department and/or pull. These individuals are: Lewis T. Reiss, Bob McClure, Dianne Mizer, Lewis Lahna, Mark Kerr, Richard Hothem, Lee Wyse and Russell Mizer. We will have a short memorial program in their honor around 7:30 p.m. at the pulling arena. Pastor Ken Smailes will handle the ceremony along with Larry Stahl, regular announcer.

Saturday, Aug. 10th starts with breakfast being served at 7 a.m. followed by three classes of stone-boat tractor pulling starting at 9:30 a.m.

For Saturday and Sunday, there is no year limit on tractors. Good food will be served all day at the eat stand. At 1 p.m. will be the kids pedal

pull at the basketball court.

At 6:30 p.m. there will be a watermelon eating contest.

Saturday evening’s entertainment will be music by a DJ from 5 to 6:30 p.m. From 7 to 10 p.m. Haley Watson will perform. She is a great singer with a large following and will be sure to have something to offer for everyone.

Sunday starts with the annual community church service at 10:30 a.m. at the eat stand. The area churches take turns hosting the morning worship. This year’s service will be by Renner’s St. Paul United Church of Christ. While the homecoming is an annual tradition where friends and families get together to renew fellowship, it is also one of the community’s most important events as it is the major fund raiser for the Bakersville Community Park and the Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department. jamming in my room and a neighbor of mine encouraged me to compete in the battle of the bands,” he said. “I didn’t really want to, but at the last minute I went and found a bunch of random people on campus and had us practice nonstop for a week. We ended up winning the contest and our award was to perform at another show. It was then that we realized we had something.”

Laughhunn is now a junior at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the band has been through some changes, but they are still making their mark on the music

world.

“We ended up playing for Chris Sligh who was on American Idol and was in the top 10,” Laughhunn said. “We opened up for him and he said he’d record us for free if we could get out to where he lives in Colorado.”

Wyndsor was able to fund the trip to Colorado to record with Sligh and are now in the process of working on their second album.

“We’ve been described as having hints of Coldplay, U2 and other more contemporary bands, but our music also is kind of unique,” Laughhunn said. “We aren’t boring. You just have to come hear us to get a proper description.”

He also believes their music conveys a message of hope.

“It says how we feel, who we are and how we deal with it,” Laughhunn said. “Our first album was a lot of songs about crying out to God as we

COSHOCTON – The Make a Joyful Noise concert at the Coshocton Airport Amphitheater this weekend is a great opportunity for church groups and area residents to rock out to Christian music.

Headliner of the event is Josh Wilson, who is known for hits such as, “Savior, Please” and “Before the Morning.” In 2012 he also won the Christian Songwriter/Artist of the Year award.

The concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 and also features Wyndsor, which is excited to open for Wilson.

“We get to play at a great big venue before a well-followed artist,” said Nate Laughhunn.

“You can’t match that.”

Wyndsor was formed when Laughhunn made a last minute decision to compete in a battle of the bands.

Park’s community-banking subsidiary in Ohio, The Park National Bank, reported net income of $40.3 million for the first half of 2013, compared to net income of $45.0 million for the same period in 2012. The Park National Bank had total assets of $6.5 billion at both June 30, 2013 and 2012. This performance generated an annualized return on average assets of 1.24 percent and 1.40 percent for The Park National Bank through the first six months of 2013 and 2012, respectively.

The Park National Bank loan portfolio experienced good growth during the second quarter of 2013 and first half of 2013. Through the first six months of 2013, loan balances increased by $72.4 million. Loans outstanding at June 30, 2013 of $4.44 billion represented an increase of $160 million compared to the loans outstanding of $4.28 billion at June 30, 2012.

The $160 million increase in loans over the last twelve months is related to continued growth in the bank’s retained mortgage loan portfolio, growth in the consumer loan portfolio, and increases in the commercial loan portfolio.

“We continue to find new opportunities to help families and businesses secure smart, reliable loans,” said Trautman. “We’ll strive to sustain the loan growth in the second half of the year. Our associates are focused, devoting consistent attention to the financial needs and goals of our customers.”

The report showed increased second quarter income compared to 2012 as well as notable loan growth. Also, Park’s board of directors declared a $0.94 per common share quarterly cash dividend, payable on Sept. 10, 2013 to common shareholders of record as of Aug. 23, 2013.

The board of directors also announced that effective Jan. 1, 2014, Park President David L. Trautman will become chief executive officer of Park National Corporation and The Park National Bank. Trautman will then serve as president and chief executive officer, while C. Daniel DeLawder will continue in his role as chairman of both Park National Corporation and The Park National Bank.

Net income for the second quarter of 2013 was $20.0 million, compared to $18.9 million for the same period in 2012. Net income for the six months ending June 30, 2013 was $40.7 million. Net income for the same period in 2012 was $50.4 million, which included a gain of $22.2 million ($14.4 million after-tax) from the sale of substantially all of the performing loans, operating assets and the liabilities of Vision Bank. That transaction closed on Feb. 16, 2012.

Excluding the gain from the sale of the Vision Bank business in 2012, net income for the first half of 2012 would have been $36.0 million.

Park’s net income in the first half of 2013 of $40.7 million was an increase of $4.7 million, or 13.1 percent, above first half of 2012 results excluding the gain related to this sale.

Park National Corporation announces David L. Trautman will become Chief Executive Officer in 2014 NEWARK - Park National Corporation (Park) (NYSE MKT: PRK) announced the next step in its formal and traditional leadership succession.

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, David L. Trautman will become the next chief executive officer of The Park National Bank and Park National Corporation, in addition to retaining his responsibility as president of both entities. Park Chairman and current Chief Executive Officer C. Daniel DeLawder will continue in his role as chairman of both entities. Both Trautman and DeLawder also serve as directors on the boards of The Park National Bank and Park National Corporation.

DeLawder plans to continue working on a full-time basis, following the identical pattern established by former Park Chief Executive Officers John W. Alford and William T. McConnell. Like DeLawder, Trautman was hired by and worked directly with past leaders Everett Reese, Alford, and McConnell.

“I’ve had the great fortune to work with four giants in banking — leaders who have had a profound impact on our industry, our organization, our colleagues and me,” Trautman said. “My goal is to build upon the firm foundation they constructed. David L. Trautman has been president of The Park National Bank and Park National Corporation since 2005, and has served as secretary of the corporation since 2002. A graduate of Upper Arlington High School (Columbus, Ohio), he joined Park National in 1983 after earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke University. His first position at the bank

His leadership in local community organizations includes serving as a trustee and treasurer for Licking County Foundation, a trustee and treasurer for Dawes Arboretum, a trustee for Kenyon College, a member of the development council for The Works, and a member of the Newark Rotary Club. Previously, he was a member of the campaign cabinet of United Way of Licking County, served as chairman and treasurer of the Newark and Licking County Chamber of Commerce and co-chaired a highly-successful fundraising campaign for the Midland Theatre. When he resided in Knox County, he served as the campaign chair for the United Way, was the president of the YMCA board of trustees, a board member of the Area Development Foundation and served as a trustee of Kenyon College.

He resides in Granville, Ohio with his wife, Joan. They are members of Centenary United Methodist Church, and the proud parents of three children, Ben, Will, and Karen.

C. Daniel DeLawder has served as chief executive officer of The Park National Bank and Park National Corporation since 1999. He began his career with Park National in 1971 as

a management trainee and has had various roles within the Park organization, including President of the Fairfield National Bank Division.

DeLawder is a graduate of Heath High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education, cum laude, from Ohio University in Athens. He is a graduate of numerous bank industry educational programs.

He has had many significant community leadership roles including president of United Way of Licking County and Fairfield County, chairman of the Newark Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, president of each of the Lancaster-Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce, the Simon Kenton Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the Lancaster Rotary Club; and was a member and past chairman of the board of trustees of Ohio University.

He is a past member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He served as a member of the American Bankers Association (ABA) BankPac Committee as well as a member of the Government Relations Council of the ABA. He is past president of the Ohio Bankers Association and a past director-atlarge of the Community Bankers Association of Ohio.

Currently, he serves on the boards of MedBen, Truck One, Inc. and Fleet Service, Inc., The Salvation Army, The Works, the Simon Kenton Council of the Boy Scouts of America, is a member of The Ohio University campaign steering committee, and is chair of the Newark Development Partners Board. He is also a member of the Newark Rotary Club.

Ohio Express is a rock band from Mansfield that has been selling millions of songs and touring the U.S.A. and Europe exposing the world to their unique sound. The band first hit the stage in the 1960s with catchy melodies, lyrics, driving base and harmonic keyboards. My Canal Festival journey began four years ago in 2009. I was a shy little girl whose mom entered her in the junior queen contest on a whim, wearing a dress purchased at a garage sale. I never imagined they would call my name as junior queen, but when they did, the experience of a lifetime began.

The older girls took me under their wings, and guided me out of my shell. My thanks go to Queen Desiree and her attendants Lydia, Tea and Amy Jo. The next year I was lucky enough to be back on court as princess second attendant,

and the year after that, princess first attendant.

Each of those years brought their own special memories, as I was allowed to travel further and to new festivals. Thank you to more friends like Queen Cali, and attendants Arieka and Shayna that made those years so special. I also met a very sweet young lady that was a tremendous role model, who I will look up to forever. Queen Kassidy may be small in size, but she has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know. And then came the year that has topped off this whole experience.

Last year I dressed in a 1912 costume and told a story that referenced the “Titanic.” Once they called my name as princess, I had an uncontrollable smile stretched from ear to ear for the next several days. This year allowed me to become close with my new friends Queen Shelby, Megan, and Jenna, and let me reconnect with old ones.

I have traveled as far north as Lake Erie (several times) and as far south as Waverly, not quite to the Ohio River. My favorite festivals over the years include Feast of the Flowering Moon, Geneva Grape Jamboree, and Vermilion Festival of the Fish. But better than the festivals themselves are the friends I have made. Other than my own court members, I will always treasure Katie Miss Grapette (we traveled together all four years!) and Kensey from West Lafayette Homecoming.

I have learned so much about our state, and our community. I even learned more about my own ancestors and their work on the canal when I researched for my essay last year. This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without

Thank you to the queens for inviting me along. Thank you to our royalty director Jacque for organizing the pageants and coordinating our festival travels. The biggest thanks goes to my family. My Dad always made sure the car was clean and even got to take me to some festivals. My little brother Lucas loved to ride in the back seat during parades and wave out the windows. My grandparents and even my great-grandma went to some of my festivals. Traveling with my mom and sister Sophia (who was the junior queen last year) has brought many fun times. I can’t begin to list them all. My Mom has taken me to most of my festivals, researched and made my competition costumes, and even bought a convertible for us to use at festivals. I leave this year with memories of little girls calling me Cinderella and Rapunzel who looked at me as if I were Miss America.

To whoever the next princess is, remember to act like a princess all the time, because those little girls are watching every move you make.

Above all, have fun, and may all YOUR dreams come true, just as mine did.

Canal Quilters to honor veterans during show veteran’s quilt

Over the past few years, the Canal Quilters have donated more than 200 quilts to area veterans. This year, they are taking it a step further and honoring our area veterans with a Hall of Honor during their annual Canal Quilters show, which will be Aug. 9, 10, and 11 at the Presbyterian Church.

COSHOCTON – Each year, the Coshocton Canal Quilters donate quilts to our local veterans

through a generous donation by the Coshocton Elks, which allow them to purchase materials needed for their quilting projects. Twenty to 25 quilts are donated each year to veterans in the community that are lovingly made by the members of the Canal Quilters.

This year, the Canal Quilters are taking it a step further during their Canal Quilters Annual Show, which will be Aug. 9, 10, and 11 at the Presbyterian Church.

“This year, we have decided to honor the veterans by this Hall of Honor,” said Karen Caley, chairperson of the veterans quilt committee. “It will be totally dedicated to honoring our veterans. We’ve distributed over 200 quilts in Coshocton County in the last five to six years.”

The Hall of Honor will be located on the second floor of the church down the hall by the office and will feature quilts, 15 flag holders from various wars, and patriotic music. The quilt show itself will be spread out all over the church. The basement will host the majority of the quilts, the sanctuary will feature sanctuary art with quilts hanging from the balcony, and the parlor will be home to the theme quilts, which also has a patriotic ring to it, “Red and White, a Quilter’s Delight.”

The theme was actually inspired by the Columbus Museum of Art, which featured a display with only red and white quilts. Over 230 entries, not including the quilts for the veterans, have been entered into this year’s show. There will be hand-quilted, machine applique, baby, cross stitch, bead work, and many other types of quilts at the show. There will also be vendors coming in and selling materials needed for quilting.

A scavenger hunt is the perfect way to get children involved with quilting. Each child will be given a flashlight and a list of items they need to find on the quilts. When the item is found, they will shine their flashlight on the quilt.

A food stand will also be available for $5 which will include a boxed lunch with a quilter’s surprise. There will also be a boutique with items on sale for about $15.

“We had 23 committee members that did an outstanding job,” said Vickie Davis, chairperson of the quilt show. “These committee members went above and beyond and I just wanted to say thank you.”

Last August when I was crowned Canal Festival Queen I never expected what would come about over the next year. I had been given the opportunity to represent my home and travel around the great state of Ohio to many festivals and events and tell of the wonderful things that happen here; and let me tell you, this has been one of the best years of my life. I have traveled to almost 40 events, festivals and parades all over Ohio. I have gone as far north as Geneva, as far south as Mason, as far east as Dennison and as far west as West Jefferson. Going to these festivals and meeting all of the new and incredible people. I can honestly say some of

You came with us to Barnesville and Geneva and I was glad to have my best friend with me on that long car ride. Thanks for everything Amanda. To my Mom, Cheryl, we’ve traveled to 17 festivals together, well over 2,500 miles.

The memories made and the car rides together are some of my favorite, even more important than the ones made at festivals. You are my navigator, personal stylist, confidant and above all, my Mom. Thank you for being all of these things.

There is one more special lady that deserves many, many thanks. My Great-Aunt Nancy Porteus was the one to get me started walking in the Canal Days Parade in August of 1996. For those of you counting, this marks 17 years of Canal Parades. It all started with a little purple dress that some of you may remember from the Coshocton Tribune. Without my Aunt Nancy to make my beautiful and one of a kind gowns I wouldn’t be the Queen I am today. I am just one of many Queens and other royalty to have had the pleasure of wearing one of her original dresses.

I was honored to be the 2012 Coshocton Canal Festival Queen. I hope the young lady that I will crown on Friday, Aug. 9, feels as honored as I do. Good luck to all of the contestants and thanks for a good ending to a great year.

the friendships and memories that I have made during this journey are some of my most dear and treasured memories. Without the support of many important people my reign as Canal Queen wouldn’t have been possible.

I have many people to thank for their support, advice, help and friendship over the last year, and without these people I don’t think anything that went on would have been possible. I would like to thank the Coshocton Towne Centre Association, Jacque Wagner and Elise Miller for all that they do for our festival and my court.

Thank you to my Grandpa Rick and Grandma Janie for letting me borrow their car for the first couple festivals and Grandma for taking me to the Dennison Railroad Festival. I’d also like to thank Mike and Connie Johnson for treating me like another daughter and taking me to festivals even when they didn’t have one on court. To my wonderful court! Lydia and Arieka thank you for becoming like my sisters. We’ve become pretty close and shared some great memories; I hope we stay as close even when I’m not on court.

Princess Madelyn thank you for some fun times, I enjoyed getting to know you and you’ll make a great queen someday. Megan and Jenna you two may be the quietest on court but we’ve sure had some laughs and thank you for that. Emmilia, thank you for making new friends with me, and letting me ride with you in the parade at First Town Days. Senior Queen Bess you are truly one of a kind.

Fight mosquito bites

Canal Festival: The Coshocton Canal Days Festival will be Aug. 8 – 11. The junior queen competition will be Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the gazebo at the court square. The queen, princess, and senior queen competition will be Friday, Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the court square gazebo. There will be a 50s car show and a bike show Saturday, Aug. 10 starting at 9 a.m. The grand parade will also be Saturday at 5 p.m. and a concert featuring Ohio Express at 7 p.m.

The mayor’s promenade will be Sunday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. The Red and White Quilters Delight quilt show will be at the Presbyterian Church Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Coshocton Antique Flea Market: The Coshocton Antique Flea Market, sponsored by the Coshocton Agriculture Society, will be Aug. 10-11. Bark For Life: The annual American Cancer Society Bark for Life will be Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The event starts with an Opening Celebration and is followed by a walk around Lake Park. After the walk, there are games, demonstrations, food, and activities for everyone.

The American Cancer Society Bark for Life of Coshocton County canine teams fundraise to celebrate cancer survivorship and to contribute to the ACS mission of continued cancer research, education, awareness, and improved services for cancer patients and advocacy.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Auditions: Coshocton Footlight Players is announcing auditions for the season’s opening play in its newly-renovated theater.

Stevenson’s novella, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, follows Hyde’s evil persona as he tries to take over his creator, Dr. Jekyll. COSHOCTON - Ice, ice cream and sodas is the topic for the Thursday, Aug. 8 Our Town Stories discussion at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum.

It’s summertime—the season that begs for refreshing drinks and cold treats. Attendees will discuss the types of ice creams, sodas and soft drinks that could be purchased as well as the shops where you could purchase them. Homemade ice cream stories are welcomed too.

Whether you grew up in Coshocton or not, you’re invited to this onehour discussion about the ways things were.

Our Town Stories begins at noon and admission is free. JHM’s Our Town Stories meets on the second Thursday of each month to discuss an array of local history topics. The atmosphere is casual and the discussion is always informative, fun and surprising. Free beverages and dessert will be provided. These Our Town Stories sessions are being videotaped for posterity. Don’t let local history be forgotten. September’s topic will be Early Transportation, including trains, buses and taxis.

COSHOCTON - On July 25, four local teens who are in foster care attended the Connecting the Dots Conference at the Crowne Plaza North in Columbus. The primary goal of the one-day conference was to connect Ohio teens and young adults in and from foster care with resources, information and preparation to succeed in their transition to young adulthood.

Connecting the Dots from Foster Care to Employment and Independent Living is a statewide initiative launched by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, championed by Director Michael Colbert, for the purpose of breaking down silos and bringing together child welfare professionals, workforce experts and mentors with the goal of helping teens in foster care successfully prepare for work, vocational training or college, and independent living.

The conference was a youth conference, first and foremost. Its primary purpose was to connect dots between Ohio foster care youth and the resources they need to succeed in young adulthood. Participants were provided with hands-on learning, opportunities to network and share ideas. Wide arrays of workshops were offered and the local teens chose the following

COSHOCTON – Several local organizations are helping to send children back to school in style and well supplied.

New Beginnings Ministries held its Fourth annual Back to School Fair Aug. 3. Attendees were treated to food, entertainment, free school supplies, backpacks, clothing, haircuts and even manicures.

This year, the Coshocton Women of Witness also is making an event out of its distribution of free school supplies. The organization is partnering with Ken Stocker and Pastor Mark Granger of New Life Ministries to host the first The Gathering – Back to School Bash, which they hope to make an annual event.

The Back to School Bash will be Saturday, Aug. 17 at Kids America from noon to 5 p.m.

josie sellers will be distributing book bags filled with generic school supplies to families who have requested them. To request a filled book bag, contact the Women of Witness office at 622-3797 and leave the child’s name, grade, school and a contact name and phone number.

The book bags were filled thanks to generous donations from community businesses and residents who donated items or made monetary donations. This year, a local business gave Women of Witness a great deal on drawstring bags, and 750 were ordered.

“They’ve been very generous and very kind,” said Cindy Carroll, Women of Witness ministry director. “This community has very big hearts. People in this community always rise to the challenge and go above and beyond.”

The 750 drawstring bags have been filled and will be available at the Back to School Bash to those who have called and requested them.

The bags will be filled and sorted by grade level, grades kindergarten through sixth grade.

In addition to the drawstring bags, 350 other book bags have been purchased and are ready to be filled, but donations are still needed to fill them. The goal is to have 100 of those available at the Back to School Bash in addition to the 750

Women of Witness will be needing the following items to help fill the remainder book bags: Pink erasers and pencil top erasers, crayons, scissors, colored pencils, rulers, blue/ black pens, highlighters, pocket folders, onesubject spiral notebooks, small packets of loose leaf notebook paper, glue sticks, and small plastic pencil boxes.

In addition to book bags being distributed, The Gathering – Back to School Bash will also feature a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, games inside and outside for the kids, Christian music all afternoon, and food. Social services in the community will be on hand to provide services to those who attend.

“It’s kind of a pairing between the faithbased community with the social services community,” said Carroll. “I hope families take advantage of this. I’m hoping the community participates and supports the faith-based and social services community, and I’m hoping the community helps us meet these needs. We’re excited to be involved with it this year.”

COSHOCTON - Coshocton County Youth Leadership (CCYL), a program of Leadership Coshocton County (LCC) and the Coshocton Foundation announced the Class of 2014.

A two-day kickoff retreat took place July 21-22 at Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center. Brad Fuller and Bart Winegar of AEGIS Consulting, LLC were the facilitators. The retreat is followed by seven monthly half day sessions and an all day closing session that focus on leadership skills and styles, team building and problem solving techniques, communication skills and self-development. It also provides an opportunity for the youth to interact with community leaders, learn about the many facets of the county and see first-hand opportunities for the future. The program concludes in April with commencement.
