Local firefighters and impassioned running enthusiasts joined together at the Courtsquare early Saturday morning to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. Steve Wilson, President of IAFF Local #216, said, “We’re looking at over 125 participants this morning. This is our fifth year for the race. We started out with 34 the first year so we’ve really grown. All of the money raised goes to Muscular Dystrophy. Giving to MDA goes back over fifty some years because the International Association of Firefighters wanted to find a national cause to raise money for and MDA was brought up and that’s where we’ve donated for over fifty years”.

Referencing the event sponsors, Wilson added, “The businesses here in Coshocton are just unbelievable. I know times are tough but they always dig down deep to help us out”.

Kamryn Anisa, age 4, was on hand at the finish line with mom Vikki to root for her Dad (Jay McGinnis) during the race. She said, “One time we ran with Daddy. Mommy and me. She was tired”.

Jenny Bitting, spokesperson for the Muscular Dystrophy Association out of Akron, said, “This is a very well organized and very successful

event. We have a fifty BY Mark fortune plus year long tradition for the firefighters to partner with Muscular Dystrophy. They help raise money to find a cure for any of the forty three MDA diseases.

Yesterday they were out filling the boot, which is the most traditional form of fund raising. It’s great and appreciated that they raise money for us”.

Payton Wright and Ali Dawson, who will be sophomores at River View this fall, were racing to better their times. The pair will be on the cross country team this fall.

Tracey Kinyo, who resides in Linwood, North Carolina, recorded the fastest female time, 19:32. She commented, “I use this for training in trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon. These races help you get faster. My mom and dad live in Sugarcreek so it’s close when I’m visiting.

I really like the course – and the organization is great. I was surprised that the race director remembered me from last year – things like that are what make this event enjoyable. My goal is to have a time under 20 minutes. I normally run two or three times per month”.

United Way kick-off event “A Taste of Coshocton County” coming this month

It’s time to bring your appetite once again to ‘A Taste of Coshocton County’ – the 201011 United Way campaign kick-off event. The event will be Thursday, Aug. 26 from 5:30 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Park Pavilion. Suzanne Clark, Executive Director of United Way, said there are already a number of area restaurants and caterers signed up to participate including Auer Hardware, Buehler’s Mill, Captain Nye’s of Roscoe Village, Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, Coshocton Town & Country Club, Coshocton Yard, Friendly Hills Camp Catering, Lava Rock Grill, Padgett’s Old Fashioned Donuts, Papa John’s Pizza, Pearl Valley Cheese, Peggy Sue’s Steak & Ribs, Schumaker Farms Catering, Warehouse Steak & Stein, and Yucatan Mexican Restaurant.

“Community members attending the event will get to vote for their favorite vendor by dropping their event ticket after its use into the participant’s vote jar,” Clark said. “The vendor with the most tickets at the end of the event will be declared the ‘Best of Coshocton’.”

Live music will be onstage throughout the evening.

Tickets for ‘A Taste of Coshocton County’ are $10 for adults and includes 10 tastes from the participating restaurants and caterers. Tickets

Tickets can be purchased from the United Way office at 448 Main Street, Coshocton or from any United Way board member. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door that night.

In addition to the tasting that evening, United Way will raffle off 13 Longaberger baskets generously filled by each of the United Way agencies. The filled market baskets are valued at more than $200 each. Raffle tickets will be available during the tasting event or can be purchased in advance at the United Way office or from any of the 19 partner agencies. Those agencies include American Red Cross, The Arthritis Foundation, The Mentoring Center, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, First Step FVIS, Coshocton County Handicapped Society, Maternal & Child Health Center, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Salvation Army, The Tutoring, Learning, Contributing (TLC) Program, Coshocton Recreation, Canal Lewisville Recreation, Conesville Recreation, Ridgewood Recreation, Rising Tide Aquatics Program, Roscoe Recreation, Union Recreation and Warsaw Recreation.

This is the sixth year for ‘A Taste of Coshocton County’ and Clark says the event has grown each year. “We had over 600 attendees last year. We are thrilled with the community’s support for this event. It’s a lot of fun, you get to sample delicious tastes from the vendors, and it’s something you don’t want to miss!”

Clark says the goal for the upcoming campaign is $350,000. All proceeds raised from ‘A Taste of Coshocton County’ will go toward the 2010-11 United Way campaign.

Local student named to Dean’s List Courtney Alicia Timmons of Coshocton was named to the Dean’s list at The Ohio State University for the Spring quarter of 2010 with a 3.9 GPA. Courtney is the daughter of Denise Timmons of Coshocton and a 2009 graduate of River View High School. While attending RVHS, she was a 4-year varsity swimmer, National Honor Society member, 4-year honor roll and graduated in the top 10% of her class. Courtney was the 2009 recipient of “Land Grant” and will be a sophomore this fall in Columbus majoring in Chemistry with a minor in German. While attending classes Courtney works at the campus fitness center as a lifeguard. She is currently employed at Lake Park Aquatic Center a 3rd year lifeguard and teaches private swimming lessons. 2008 Senior Queen Lola Endsley will crown the 2010 Senior Queen on Friday, Aug. 20 during the Canal Festival Princess and Queen Competition at the Courtsquare Gazebo.

Coshocton Hospital continues its mission to provide excellent health care in Coshocton County. The hospital’s emergency department continues to operate at the national level and is continuously looking for opportunities to better serve the community. Coshocton Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Lawrence Lewis has joined their staff as full time Director of the Emergency Department.

Dr. Lewis was born in Canada and became a United States citizen in 2004. He completed his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1984. Dr. Lewis received his Board certification in Emergency Medicine in 1996. He also has several certificates including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Provider and Instructor), Advanced Trauma Life Support (Provider and Instructor) and a Certified Basic EMT Instructor.

Dr. Lewis and his wife Patricia have one daughter, Amy. In his free time, Dr. Lewis enjoys cross country skiing, golf, in line, ice skating and jogging.

Jason Bryant, Associate Director of Nursing, is looking forward to Dr. Lewis being a part of the hospital staff. “We are anxious for Dr. Lewis

COLUMBUS - Sunday, Aug. 8 marked the last day of the 2010 Ohio State Fair. Over 200 members of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir tearfully packed up their bags, said goodbye to old and new friends, and took just one more look around the fairgrounds before heading home.

For most fairgoers, the Ohio State Fair means carnival games, bumper cars and chocolate covered bacon. But for the members of the All Ohio State Fair Youth Choir, the State Fair has a whole other meaning: singing, friendships and a lot of hard work.

While the State Fair didn’t start until July 28, over 200 selected high school students from around the state of Ohio came to the fairgrounds a week early to begin rehearsal. In the five days prior to the fair, the singers practice and memorize more than 60 songs that they performed throughout the fair for more than 1,000 fairgoers.

With an average of five performances a day, the Youth Choir performed over 100 concerts by the end of the fair. Between going to various concert sites and marching in the daily parade each day, the choir marches about 10 miles a love being with the day. Coshocton Hospital has Pro-Am Golf Tournament to raise money

This is the fourth year of the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital Pro-Am Golf Tournament at West Lafayette’s River Greens Golf Course.

36 teams showed up on Friday, Aug. 6 for this year’s tournament, which started at 10 a.m.

“It’s the most teams we’ve ever had,” said Steve Miller, the director of special services.

I was sitting next to two four-year members and they knew everything. So I was like, ‘Whoa! What’s going on?’ I had no idea and they had all of the songs memorized too, so they didn’t have any music, so I was like, ‘This is crazy!’”

When asked about his favorite song, Aaron Owens of River View and second-year member said, “That’s a hard one actually. Well, my favorite new song is probably ‘Peace in this House’. It just has a really cool message – just basically let there be peace.”

“I love being with the kids and I love the impact that this organization has in Ohio,” said Devon Duling of Coshocton. He has been with the Youth Choir for 14 years, four years as a member and 10 years on staff.

Kyle Blust of Coshocton, firstyear member of the Youth Choir, agrees that the staff has been more than helpful in helping the Youth Choir learn and memorize their songs. When talking about his biggest hurdle to overcome, Kyle said, “Probably just the amount of music we have to learn in such a small time. That’s always difficult for everybody but the staff makes it really easy and they make it doable.

Typically, the event raises between $20,000 and $25,000 for the hospital. The money goes in hospital’s endowment fund, which is used for future renovations and building projects at the hospital, Steve Miller said.

There have not been any major purchases made from the endowment fund, so the money raised by the tournament has helped to strengthen the fund, said Bob Miller, CEO of Coshocton Memorial Hospital.

The goal is have more than $1 million in the fund.

“It’s an opportunity that we can highlight Coshocton, highlight River Greens Golf Course … and promote the hospital all at the same time,” Bob Miller said.

Bob Miller said that he expects that the tournament will grow in the future.

Miller said that he thinks the tournament keeps growing for a couple of reasons.

“It’s a class act outing. The money is good for the pros. The amateurs have an opportunity to win shop credit,” he said.

The teams are made up of three amateur golfers and one professional golfer. Some teams bring their own professional golfers, while other teams ask that the tournament provides a professional for them, Steve Miller said.

It costs $100 for an amateur to play and $125 for a professional to participate in the tournament.

“We get the support of the community … we have local teams who play,” he said.

Teams can come from as far away as West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The players will play one round of 18 holes.

It usually takes five hours for all the teams to finish playing. After they are finished playing, the players are provided with a meal.

The tournament has a shotgun start, meaning that each team starts on a different hole. So, a team could start on the 10th hole, which is considered the most difficult.

There were four prizes on four separate holes for anyone who got a hole-in-one. One prize was a Ford Focus, which was provided by DeCosky Ford. Other prizes included a golf outing, an opportunity to go to a golf resort and a global positioning system.

First performance at the all-new Coshocton Airport Amphitheater a success Around 200 people were in attendance at the inaugural performance at the outdoor Coshocton Airport Amphitheater on July 31 for the Jonathan Kingham concert, which was sponsored by the Jeff Drennen Dealerships. Kingham on guitar and vocals, and Ryan Shea Smith on keyboard and vocals, entertained the audience with a mix of jazz, rhythm and blues, folk, and freestyle ad lib lyrical numbers. The audience enjoyed sitting on the hillside on blankets and chairs among the beauty of the outdoors with the wooded backdrop, ever-changing sunset in the sky, singing tree frogs, and even a rainbow, which many took to be a good sign for the future of the Airport Amphitheater.

Kingham and Smith play over 100 concerts each year throughout the country. They spent several days in Coshocton last week having songwriting workshops for youth and adults at FRETS in Coshocton. “It’s great to come into a community like Coshocton and get to spend a few days getting to know the local people,” said Kingham. “We have a really cool life where we get to travel around the country holding songwriting workshops and performing.”

The attendees of the youth and adult workshops got to perform the songs they wrote with Kingham and Smith during the concert.

Two of the youth participants were Skylar and Jade Hasseman. “It was a lot of fun,” said Skylar. “We learned about songwriting and how to brainstorm ideas when you get stuck looking for the right words.”

“We learned a lot of things and got to hang out with Jonathan and Ryan which was fun,” said Jade. “It was great getting to perform the song we wrote on the stage tonight.”

“We loved Coshocton!” said Smith. “The songwriting workshop events we had here were some of the best we’ve ever had. We really connected with the group more than with any other and wrote a really neat song with the adult group that may have a chance to be cut in the country market in Nashville.”

August 13th, 1950 To celebrate the centennial, West Lafayette created a “special police force.” The task of the all-women unit was to enforce the new rule that demanded that men grow facial hair in honor of the village’s pioneer forefathers. The force, which was sworn in by Mayor Raymond Glazier, was made up of Evelyn Walker, Sandy Shaw, who was the 1949 homecoming queen, Mary Mobley, Martha Patterson, Nancy Helmereich, Joann Cutshall, Roberta Baker and Janett Smith. All men caught shaved or shaving had to pay a 25 cent fine and a $1 “whiskers pass,” all of the proceeds went to the swimming pool fund.

August 15th, 1960 Neighbors and Coshocton residents were invited to swim for free at Avondale swimming club’s opening day for its new pool. The pool, located on Hillcrest Drive, was 30 feet by 60 feet and ranged from three feet to nine feet deep.

Raymond G. Baker became the new Ridgewood High School principal. Baker, 41 at the time, came from Elyria High School, where he was the workstudy coordinator. Baker, married and father of four, and former-principal Bill Caudill were friends and that is how he came to hear about the new position.

His two sons, Robert Gardner, registrar and professor of sociology at Southwestern Adventist University near Fort Worth, and Noel Gardner, a psychiatrist from Salt Lake City, came to help celebrate. Dr. and Mrs. Gardner live with their daughter Jo Lynne and her husband Greg Owen.

Grandson, Evan Owen and wife Joni drove Friday night from Chattanooga to spend Saturday with the family.

None of their other seven grandchildren were able to make the trip. Dr. Gardner spent the last 30 years of his career in public health and lifestyle education including 10 years on the faculty of Thomas Jefferson medical school in Philadelphia. The first lady of Ohio, Mrs. Francis Strickland, came to the county to speak with local Democrats and to thank them for their hard work in helping with the governor’s election campaign. While there, the first lady also entertained with a song she wrote entitled, “The Dems are going four more years”. She said that she believes Ohio is heading in the right direction.

The 143rd annual Grand Army of the Republic Bean Dinner will take place Sunday, Aug. 15, the customary third Sunday in August, at McElwee Park in New Castle.

The day begins with church services hosted

by The New Castle Ministries at 10 a.m. and everyone is welcome. The flag raising at 11:15 a.m. is followed by a full menu meal including sandwiches, potato salad, coleslaw, homemade pies, cakes and such specialties as soup beans, cooked over an open fire in iron kettles, and cornbread. Homemade ice cream will be made available by Phil Ingmire.

Entertainment by Chestnut Ridge Bluegrass Gospel commences at 11:45 a.m. followed by a performance by the Walhonding Rube Band at 1 p.m. and the crowning of the new Bean Queen or King. In addition, people are invited to be a part of some new games, such as corn hole, and many old-fashioned family games throughout the day. Local officials and candidates will be on the grounds to visit and listen to concerns.

The GAR Bean Dinner is an annual commemoration of the Charles C. Nichols Post, formed in 1867. Historically, the dinner was on the Nichols Farm west of New Castle. On bequeathal of McElwee Park to the community many years ago, the commemoration was transferred to its present location.

The park is open for picnics and family reunions. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated and are used for park improvements only. Any questions can be directed to Karen and Allen Locke at (740) 824-3792.

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), through OSU Extension and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) teamed up to teach some healthy eating habits and how to stretch food dollars for National Nutrition Month.

National Nutrition Month is in March and that is when several WIC participates signed up and started participating in the EFNEP program.

This is a free series of eight one-hour classes that are available to families with kids in Coshocton County. They discuss how to stretch food dollars, how to plan for meals, how to have a balanced diet and tips for getting kids to eat more fruit and vegetables. They talk about physical activity and how with a little bit of physical activity, every day, we can work on stopping the obesity problem we have with kids and adults.

There is food tasting at each class and at the last class there is a goodie bag with some free items like a recipe book, calendar, pen, pencil and more.

For each class attended, participants get a free incentive for attending, like measuring cups, a beach ball, produce brush and meat thermometer.

Everyone who completed the class was eligible to be put into a drawing for a price. The Coshocton County Memorial Hospital donated a small vegetable tray and Baker’s Foods donated a $20 gift card for their store.

The two winners were Malissa Tish, who won the Baker’s card and Raylynn Shortt, who won the vegetable tray.

The Coshocton/Tuscarawas Lamb & Fleece Improvement Association will be having a workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 25 to discuss basic sheep health issues with guest speaker Eric Schaefer. The workshop will begin at 8 p.m. at TMK Farm Service in New Bedford, near the intersection of SR 643 and CR 12. Anyone interested in learning more about raising and caring for sheep should plan to attend.

They were brothers in the Lord, spiritual leaders in their youth group at Coshocton Nazarene Church, as well as a strong spiritual influence at Coshocton High School where they attended. As leaders on their football team, they were highly respected by many.

For twenty years, the Coshocton Nazarene Church has presented an Easter Musical Presentation, of which each young man was very involved. Some may remember Matt Cox playing the part of the beggar in the outdoor market scene, or being knocked down the church balcony steps by the guards. Matt always went to extreme lengths to assure that his costume was as muddy and dirty as possible to portray his part. On dress rehearsal evening, his mother said to him, “The costume is dirty enough. Anyway, it’s only dress rehearsal.” He responded, “Not to those who are there!” Many in our community were always present on dress rehearsal evening.

These three young men understood the importance of “Living Faith”.

Recently, Charles Hoffman and his wife Jana were here from Georgia celebrating their son Carson’s birthday with family and friends. Carson is 2 years old. Harlan Alford came from his home in New York City to attend.

Matt Cox and his wife Amee were unable to attend. They live in London, England and Matt was on location with his employment in Hong Kong.

Therefore, it seemed appropriate, that these two men be given the honor of passing the Prayer Torch from Coshocton Nazarene Church to Solid Rock Foursquare Church.

On July 25, Coshocton Nazarene Church received the Prayer Torch from Perry Chapel Baptist Church, who had just completed their 24/7prayer week.
