SOUP The smell of soup beans being cooked over an open fire in iron kettles drifted through the air Sunday, Aug. 16, at McElwee Park in Newcastle. The soup is a highlight of the annual Grand Army of the Republic Bean Dinner, which has now taken place for 148 years. Another highlight, however, for the volunteers who help make the soup is socializing with those who come for the food and entertainment. “I’ve been helping do this for a long time now,” said Ed Moran. “I like visiting with all the people you see from year to year.” Pictured from left are Moran and Bryan Johnson, who also volunteers at the dinner. COSHOCTON – Ed Mulholland was all smiles when Tabitha Patterson presented him with a check from Kiwanis of Coshocton. “This is a great surprise,” said Mulholland, scout executive/executive director of the Boy Scouts of America Muskingum Valley Council. Kiwanis made the $12,500 donation during its Aug. 12 meeting, which was held at the Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation (MVSR).
“We just completed an awesome summer here,” Mulholland said. More than 800 scouts from seven different counties spend time at MVSR learning how to canoe, raft, make pottery, work with leather, survive in the wild, be safe in the water, climb towers, repel and much more. “It’s amazing to watch these kids begin their week all nervous and then by the end of the week be walking around here with such confidence,” Mulholland said. “They develop a lot of self “Taking Care of Business”

confidence while earning merit badges that introduce them to all sorts of things.” The MVSR is used all year long for numerous events and this year guests were able to enjoy the expanded central lodge. “This is a beautiful facility that we spent about half a million dollars on,” Mulholland said. Tom Sieber is the chairman of the capital campaign that helped make this project possible. “We needed to expand our central lodge because more than just dining happens here,” he said. “We used to have scouts eating in here, under the picnic shelter and under tents, but now everyone can be under one roof.” The next project at MVSR will be a central bath/shower facility with year round cabins around it. “When you have (young) Cub Scouts come out in late fall/early spring in iffy weather you don’t give them the best first glimpse of camping,” Sieber said. “This way they can be under roof and still enjoy the camping experience.” The donation Kiwanis made will be used to construct one of these cabins. “You brought them to our attention when you spoke to us one other time and as a board we decided this would be a good fit for our club,” said Patterson, who is president elect of Kiwanis. After the check presentation, the Kiwanis members were invited to tour MVSR and see where these cabins will be constructed. Kiwanis meets at noon every Wednesday at the Elks on Chestnut Street. Anyone is welcome to come to a meeting and learn more about the club, which focuses on helping children. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

SCHOOL SUPPLIES Volunteers packed hundreds of drawstring bags full of school supplies Aug. 14 for elementary through high school students. “It’s a good start for them,” said Cindy Carroll, acting ministry director for Women of Witness. “It doesn’t give them everything they need, but its close.” This was the 13th year for the Women of Witness Helping Hands School Supply Drive and the project is made possible through donations of school supplies and money from the community. “They are the reasons we can do this and Wal-Mart has especially been a great supporter,” Carroll said. The organization ended up with 575 bags to distribute Aug. 15 at New Life Ministries on South Seventh Street. “We feel blessed to be able to extend a helping hand to families who are struggling,” said Debbie Addy, president of Women of Witness. “We also pray over these bags and for the families and children who get them. It’s a way to spread God’s love.” BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS

Mean of word gift dicussed
LETTER TO THE EDITOR FRANK T. CICHON To the Editor, Gift is an interesting word that has several meanings. It can mean something given, something received, something used. I can give something material or non material to someone, or I can receive something material or non material. Material would be a physical or hands on; non material would be love, compassion, and understanding. Another interesting thing about gifts, to be a gift it has to be either given or received. People have abilities to talk, to listen, to make things with our hands, you know, our talents. We were all given different talents, and when we use these talents to help others they become gifts. Recently a person of some notoriety, who has the gift to talk, used that gift in a very harsh way, insulting, and putting down others while all the time boasting how he did, and would do so many things. He used the words like, I did this and I did that. I find it interesting how he can say that when if it was not for the people around him he could do nothing, and without permission he could not even speak. Personally, I prefer the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord, over the gift of Gab. So we need to think before we act, do we want a person with looks and gab, or one with the other gifts. Peace, Frank T. Cichon

The girls helped families make fingerprint family trees. While up there, one of the girls spotted singer Casee Allen. He signed their sashes and took a lot of pictures with them. He also was a Head Start graduate so he and his sister (Courtney) made a family tree for Head Start’s website. Casee went on to sing for everyone and he handed the girls each two CDs. One for them to listen to and the other he signed for them to keep. Casee’s Aunt Angie was the one in charge of the party and all the tables and entertainment. FRESNO - Listen closely....hear the cheers, squeals of delight and applause? Yes, that’s right, it’s all area parents celebrating the fact that school is about to start! Where did the summer go? Summer maybe fading fast, but the fresh “farm to table” goodness is abundant at the Fresno market. Local growers and producers are brining an impressive amount and variety of farm fresh veggies, baked goods and handmade items to market each week. The quality and craftsmanship is truly amazing. From locally grown sweet corn, green and red hot peppers, cabbage, candy onions, red beets, juicy peaches, sweet plums and crisp apples to the artisan baked bread, homemade pies and pastries, not to mention the beautiful golden honey, local maple syrup and herbal seasonings and tea blends; there are certainly many unique and interesting things to be discovered. With school starting in the less than a week, why not bring the kids out to the market and let them pick from all this wonderful farm to table goodness to pack in their school lunches. Let them take a little taste of the farmers’ market back to school with them. Let’s face it, PB&J just plain tastes better on homemade bread. And who doesn’t want to impress the teacher with a lovely red apple on the first day of school? Teaching the importance and value of healthy eating starts at home with smart food choices and examples. So what better place to begin than at

AUGUST 25TH, 1955 The Coshocton County Youth Center learned that their newfound home would be located inside the Eagles building. The local lodge so kindly offered the organization their main floor for a greatly reduced rental price. The Youth Center’s old home, which was located on S. Sixth St., was unfortunately condemned due to safety hazards. Although the question of where to go has been resolved, there is still work that needs to be done. The floors are in need of being completely replaced, the walls need repainted, and some electrical wiring still needs to be completed before the group can use the building. AUGUST 22ND, 1965 Mrs. James H. Clow was named the first licensed female pilot in Coshocton County. Clow recently received her pilot’s license after passing a flight test just last Monday in Zanesville. Clow comes from a flying family as both her father and her brother each have their pilot’s license. She exclaims that flying with a purpose and going somewhere gives her much more pleasure than flying around just for the heck of it. AUGUST 20TH, 1975 Four local teens will represent Coshocton County at the State 4-H General Livestock judging contest at the Ohio State Fair. Knox Porteus, Joel McFarland, Doug Ridenbaugh, and Gene Mullett are the young men that will be competing. If any of the four should earn a top 3 award, they will be automatically qualified for a tryout for a chance to be on the State Team which would compete at the national competition. According to Jim Jonard, who is the County extension and the team’s coach, the boys will judge three classes of beef cattle, three classes of swine, and two classes of sheep as well as give an oral presentation. AUGUST 24TH, 1985 Coshocton County native Warren Rodenbaugh was presented the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award. State Senator Joseph Secrest had the honor of presenting Mr. Rodenbaugh the award. Rodenbaugh, who is of the ripe age of 83, was a supervisor at Kroger for 25 years before he began his own business where he served as a florist for an additional 21 years. Rodenbaugh spends most of his time working as the assistant director of the Kno-Ho-Co Senior center; but, he also volunteers roughly 15 hours at the center per week. He expressed that he has a great drive for helping others by saying, “I am past that hobby stage, now I like to help the seniors with some of their problems.” Warren is proud of his service to others and the community and he is truly deserving of this award.

BY BETH SCOTT Route 541 from the Roscoe Village Corporation to the south corporation sign on Cambridge Road, which is 4.9 miles. This job has been completed; however, cementing man holes, edge lines, and striping still need to be done. Although the slip area had to be bypassed in the original work, that should be finished up by the end of the week. The total cost of the State Route 541 project was $2.1 million and was funded in part by a federal grant for $1,436,000. The city contributed $600,000 to that project which also included adding handicapped sidewalks. The Ohio Public Works Commission also helped to fund the paving with a $325,000 loan. Other funding included an MLV fund and the 7.5 percent state tax fund helped to fund the State Route 541 project. The next round of repaving will be done on Main Street from Water Street to Seventh Street. This will begin sometime in September. Repair work has also been scheduled on Clow Lane and Morgan Run Road sometime in late August or early September. Repairs have been completed this year on Otsego Avenue, but Otsego is scheduled to be completely repaved next year. The funding for this has been secured through an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant in the amount of $299,992. The work on Otsego Avenue will begin next spring. Due to a $25,000 CDBG grant, the city was able to repair sidewalks, berming, and guard rails at the intersection of Seventh Street and Otsego Avenue and the intersection of Denman Avenue and Otsego Avenue. Next year, the city hopes to pave many side streets. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

This year the campaign goal was increased from $380,000 to $395,000 and United Way is well on its way to meeting that thanks to Buckeye Brine. The business became a pacesetter for the campaign after making a $40,000 donation. “This is my first time being here (at Taste of Coshocton) on behalf of Buckeye Brine and I’m pretty impressed,” said Monty Shell, operations manager at Buckeye Brine. “It’s well organized and run. NEWARK - During commencement on Aug. 7, Central Ohio Technical College awarded an associate degree to Amanda Davis, a student that graduated this past spring from Ridgewood Local School District. Davis worked independently to take college courses and high school classes simultaneously. She technically earned her associate degree before her high school diploma (having completed her coursework in spring semester). COTC initiated a program that allows Coshocton area high school students the opportunity to complete an associate degree while in high school. This initiative begins in autumn semester 2015 and is offered for free, giving students a tremendous financial advantage toward completing a bachelor’s degree. Central Ohio Technical College is a fully accredited, public college dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs, as well as encouraging the professional development of students, staff, faculty and administrators to assist them in achieving their maximum potential. COTC is the only technical college in Ohio operating four fullservice campus locations: Newark, Coshocton, Knox and Pataskala.

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met with Pat Kelley of Kelley Architectural Services on Wednesday, Aug. 12 to discuss possible exterior work on the Coshocton County Courthouse. While nothing was finalized, the commissioners talked about restoring the intricate sandstone around the windows. Kelley said that grinding or sandblasting the sandstone might reshape the decorative pieces and be more cost-effective. The difference between replacing a repairing the stone is the difference in cost and also the goal for the end design.

They also discussed the possibility of replacing the steps leading up to the courthouse door. All final decisions are based on cost and Kelley said he needs to do more research before giving the commissioners any prices. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
