Semi-finals for the next Coshocton Idol will be Wednesday, Aug. 29 and Thursday, Sept.

6 at 7 p.m. About seven to nine contestants will perform each night of semi-finals. Two judges have already been selected to judge the competition, Brad Fuller and Tommy Thompson, with a third one to be decided later.

During each performance, judges will be looking for appearance, stage presence, entertainment value, vocal ability, knowledge of the song, and their overall impression of the performance. They will select finalists by rating each performer on a 1 – 10 point system, 10 being the best, for each category. Performers can sing any style of music they prefer.

Beagles will be returning to Coshocton this month for the Don McVay Sr. Memorial Beagle Hunt which will take place beginning at 6:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24-25, at Schumaker Farms located at 52411 C.R. 16 in West Lafayette. Spectator admission and parking are free. Dave McVay is the event chairperson.

“Don McVay Sr. was an avid beagler and was respected by so many beaglers,” said Dave. “We will see hunters here from all over the country at this event since it has become one of the most prestigious events to win. We had 153 dogs in the hunt last year and 208 the previous year.

This is the 11th year for this event and we expect between 1,000 to 1,500 people.”

Dave says the hunt draws participants from across Ohio as well as from several states including - New Mexico, Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa, and Virginia. Most of them stay in the Coshocton or Newcomerstown area.

“This year’s event is a money event where the winners will receive a very large payout,” Dave said. “The PKC is the host kennel club and has added $1,000 to the purse. The beaglers really like coming to Coshocton County. With the UKC Nationals here in April each year, the beaglers have become very familiar with Coshocton, and the running grounds that the Coshocton County Beagle Club have are some of the best in the country.”

The public is welcome to attend the event.

Dave says visitors can show up and go out on a cast as a spectator or they can watch a show that will occur sometime between noon and 1 p.m.

“This hunt is designed to give back to the hunter by having a raffle of items totaling $20,000,” he said. “Tickets are sold the day of the event for six for $5.”

Dave explained that for the event the participants are split into four dog cast or groups.

“They are released into the field in areas of permission throughout the county,” he said.

I

t was truly a great weekend here in Coshocton County with the final concert of the summer at the Airport Amphitheater on a gorgeous and somewhat cool Saturday evening, especially for August. Three local bands: Route 83, Half Moon and the Jason Pendola Band, played to the largest crowd ever at the Amphitheater. What an awesome way to cap off the season and have a launching pad into next year’s performances. And while each band has their own “groupies”, the crowd was enthusiastic and supportive for each of the bands.

Practically on the other side of the county, the wonderful volunteers in Newcastle worked from early in the morning to late in the day to host the annual GAR Bean Dinner. The beans were delicious with just the right touch of pepper and whatever else they toss into the pot! Yummy indeed. Combine that with cornbread muffins, potato salad, pie or cake, (or maybe both!) great fellowship and wonderful music from several local groups, including the famous – or is that infamous!! – Walhonding Rube Band. One of the groups came all the way from Johnstown to perform. The Rodichok family featured six children ranging from age 7 to 17, with the youngest playing a washboard. Neat stuff. The children play bluegrass and gospel music – you may have heard them at the River View Park chicken dinner and social in early August. Their website is www. sugarcreekbluegrass.com – named for Sugar Creek, W.Va. – the old family homestead. Always popular Chestnut Ridge also performed to the delight of the crowd.

Do you think Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted made the right

call by calling two of Montgomery County’s board of election officials on the carpet (suspending) for violating Husted’s recent ruling on board of election weekend hours?

This has to do with board of elections being open two weekends (Saturday morning) prior to the election for in person voting. According to an article in The Columbus Dispatch, Husted’s decision has caught the attention of The New York Times and the Jon Stewart show.

As with all things political – there is more to this than meets the proverbial eye and more than we can logically publish in this column, so to speak. Our suggestion is to follow the story. With Ohio once again looming as a key – possibly THE state – in this fall’s election, you need to know what is happening.

Ah, school starts this week!

All across the county, parents are . . . jumping for joy. Well, mostly.

Perhaps you are not in that category if you have a young person headed off to college; ready to take another huge step in their life. It is truly one of the big moments. Local school officials are ready; the new elementary school for Coshocton is making progress – let’s watch out for those school buses and kids walking to school. Adjust your travel time to allow for increased traffic. I’m sure the children will appreciate it.

Let’s take a moment to wish good luck and health to all of the area athletic teams, coaches, bands, volunteers, referees, and all those who make these opportunities possible.

And to the parents who make the sacrifice to travel to the games, buy the shoes, pay the fees, volunteer at the concession stand, etc., here’s to you.

BPW cake auction has new twist

Fancy cakes, plain cakes and even cakes entered by cats are welcome at the BPW Cake Auction.

This year’s auction will feature a cake entered by Business and Professional Women member Janie Brown under the name of her cat, Wheezer.

“She is an imaginative person who wanted to do something different and unique,” said Kim Gress, who is chairing the cake auction.

The Seventh annual Business and Professional Women Cake Auction will be held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Civic Center on Main Street. The cakes can be viewed from 1 to 6 p.m. and the auction starts at 7 p.m.

Gress said Wheezer’s cake is coming from Buehler’s and is a fourth of a sheet cake with a cat on top made out of cupcakes with gray “fur” on them.

According to Gress, Wheezer is quite the character just like his owner.

“He has no tolerance whatsoever,” she said.

Wheezer likes to hiss at people, but he does have a soft side. Brown told Gress he will follow you from room to room like a dog, enjoys treats and loves his toys and his fan.

Cakes in the auction also come with incentives and Wheezer, of course, selected items he thought other cats would enjoy. His cake will be accompanied by a litter box, treats and cat toys.

Anyone else, human or animal that would like to submit a cake is welcome to do so.

“To be in the program we need your information by Friday, Aug. 31, but we will take cakes up until the event starts,” Gress said. “Your information just won’t be in the program.”

There were 65 cakes at last year’s event. Money raised from auctioning them off helped BPW with several projects including its Working Women Scholarships, co-sponsoring the meet the candidates’ night, a luncheon for administrative professional day and much more.

“We’ve had cakes go for over $200 and some just for $7,” Gress said.

“Every little bit helps us.”

Those entering cakes also have the chance to win the people’s choice and most unusual award.

“I love seeing all of the people and watching them walk through,” Gress said. “It’s all for a good cause and it’s a fun, family event. Everyone, even the little ones, get a slip to vote, plus you get to go home with cake to eat.”

choir has sung in Mt. Gilead, Somerset, Grove City, Wooster, Newcomerstown, and Dresden. It also sang for two conferences of the Ohio Choral Directors Association and five summers as part of the concert series at Lakeside on Lake Erie.

Aug. 14 was the most recent concert in Lakeside.

Rehearsals for this season will begin on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Coshocton.

The Coshocton Community Choir will have auditions for its 42nd season on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 29 -30, at the Presbyterian Church, 142 N. Fourth St. Vacancies in the choir’s membership are open by audition to interested singers high school age and older. A prepared song is not required or used.

The choir is directed by its founder, Charles R. Snyder, and has become known for its sacred a capella literature. More than 700 singers have sung with the choir since its beginning in the fall of 1971.

If the mud ain’t flying, you ain’t trying.

That’s the slogan used by Bad Boyz Mud Runs on State Route 541, where vehicles can be found trying to make their way through mud pits on the last Saturday of the month.

“I have a lot of friends who do mud runs and there was no place around here to do them,” said Bo Carter, who hosts the mud runs. “I had a big swamp area (on my property) so me and my brother started messing around trying to build one. We cut back trees, built pits and started having them here. It’s worked out good.”

In 2011, which was the first year for Bad Boyz Mud Runs, Carter had three runs.

“Everyone was better than the next,” he said.

Carter will host his fourth run for 2012 on Saturday, Aug. 25 and plans to have a few more

“I went around to a couple of other mud runs to get their dates so I could schedule mine around there’s,” he said.

Anywhere from around 30 to almost 100 trucks attend Carter’s mud runs. However, the course is for more than just trucks.

“You can use anything that is classified as a vehicle with four-wheel drive that will get you through the mud,” Carter said.

He has his own truck that he uses for the activity, which he didn’t participate in until opening up his own mud run.

“I enjoy the thrill of going 200 feet as fast as you can to get through the mud,” Carter said.

It usually takes his truck 7.22 seconds to get through a pit, but Carter said his mud run takes a little longer.

“My pits are harder to get through,” he said.

“They can take 10-12 seconds, but some make it through in four. Horsepower makes all the difference.”

Admission to Bad Boyz Mud Runs is $5 to watch and $20 for trucks to participate.

“The people that come are just down home people that want to sit down and enjoy themselves,” Carter said.

Participants get two runs and prizes are awarded for first through third place. There

The fun starts at 2 p.m. and lasts until all vehicles have competed.

“It’s a lot of fun, but I’m still working on it and making it more comfortable,” Carter said.

“I want to add more parking, make the pit area bigger and extend the seating. The ones I went to people had to sit in the hot sun so they appreciate being able to be in the shade here all day long. I also want to add a play area because a lot of kids come with their parents.”

Bad Boyz Mud Runs has an announcer’s stand, food stand, porta potties and is handicapped accessible. The event also features 50/50 drawings and raffles.

“It’s a good time for $5,” Carter said. “I hope to do more of this and slow down on my own (excavating) work.”

Students have mixed emotions about summer ending

after school starts so I’m excited about that.”

Leah Lonsberry, who also attends Lincoln, but is in the fifth grade, was looking forward to catching up with friends she didn’t get to see in the summer.

Both girls said they enjoy science.

“I like the hands-on activities and working in groups,” Fauver said.

Lonsberry and Fauver’s little brothers also were looking forward to being with their friends and seeing some of their teachers.

“We get candy in some classes if we are good,” said Nathan Fauver, who is in the fourth grade at Lincoln. “I also like gym for the sports and math.”

Jacob Lonsberry was a little less enthusiastic about school starting.

“It’s boring and you have to do math a lot,” said the Lincoln third grader.

The boys, however, did agree that lunch and recess are a good part of the day.

“It’s a nice break to get our brains refreshed,” Nathan said.

Redskins ready themselves for challenging season Building a football program that is the envy of many, many other high schools across Ohio has its advantages, but there is also the other side of the equation.

“We tell our kids every season that we have to work hard because the target on our back gets bigger and bigger every year,” said Jim Woodrum, head coach at Coshocton High School.

The upcoming 2012 season will be no different for the Redskins as they embark on another grueling campaign as a member of the East Central Ohio League.

“We’re everybody’s Super Bowl and we have to prepare for that every week because we know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot,” Woodrum said.

And from the onset of summer conditioning through the first three scrimmages, Woodrum is satisfied that his players have gotten the message.

“This is a very self-motivated group and is one of the hardest working groups,” said Woodrum, who is in his third season as head coach. “It’s been one of the best two-a-days I’ve experienced in 23 years of coaching. They work very, very hard and the seniors have stepped up and provided very good leadership.”

Coshocton is coming off a season that saw the team advance to the regional final. That playoff run included convincing wins over Martins Ferry and St. Clairsville before it fell to Johnstown-Monroe in heartbreaking fashion, 27-24.

In order to duplicate that feat and continue the Redskins’ impressive string of playoff appearances, the team will have to show continued development, especially on the front line where graduation losses hit the team the hardest.

“We’re young and inexperienced up front,” Woodrum said. “The guys who do have age don’t have very much experience but I feel very fortunate to have the group of seniors that I have.

To have the inexperience we have on the line, we couldn’t have a better group to help them get through this.”

Bringing that leadership to the Redskins

are the players who will man most of the skill positions, starting with senior quarterback Brock Bolden.

“Brock has had a great summer,” Woodrum said. “He’s reading things very well, throwing the ball well and he’s a big, strong kid so he’s a threat when he gets out on the flank to either run or pass. They will have to respect both and that provides some issues for defenses.

“Plus, he’s providing leadership in between plays in the huddle and that’s very crucial with a young group like this.”

Lining up behind Bolden will be Tanner Cognion at fullback while Sequore Harris and Isaiah Jackson will be the wingbacks. Split end will be filled by the combined efforts of Curtis Blake, Hayden Cantrell and T.Q. James with Michael Rhoades also seeing some action. All are seniors with outstanding quickness, which lends itself to a well-balanced attack.

Seeking playing time in the backfield is junior Chase Ashcraft. Also hoping to see action are sophomores Dom Johns, Gavin Gray and Donald Stiteler. Junior Micah Demoss and sophomore Ethan Clift will be the back-up quarterbacks.

“It helps having that speed when you have inexperience on the front line,” Woodrum said.

“Those blocks don’t have to be held as long and right now it seems to be working out well.

Even though we have a lot to improve on they’re making good strides.”

On the line, sophomore Devin Cutshaw will be the center with sophomore Cody Tarman and senior Nathan Smith at guard. The tackle positions will be manned by senior Zach Mikulik and junior Jordan Saylor with junior Cody Williams at tight end backed up by junior James Johnson.

Adding depth to the unit will be senior Devon VanAtta, junior Russell Roof and sophomores Harley Powers and Nathan Leopard while senior Kyle Farrell, juniors Andrew MacKenzie and sophomores Joe Batchelor, J.T Rodgers, David English and Brody Langley will seek playing time.

throughout the season and we plan on getting them playing time throughout the season,” Woodrum said. “We have a real good core.

It’s one of those things where they always go hard. They may go the wrong places sometimes, but when they go, they go hard and that can be corrected.”

Woodrum says he has seen some tremendous improvement between the Zanesville and TriValley scrimmages, both which finished in a 1-1 tie, and then even more against John Glenn.

Defensively, there will be youth on the line but an outstanding linebacking corps should help the cause.

Woodrum plans on using Bolden and Harris at outside backer with Cognion and Smith on the inside. Blake, the only returning starter in the secondary, will play safety with Jackson, Cantrell, Gray, Stiteler and James all getting repetitions.

On special teams, Johns will handle the kickoffs, Jackson will kick point-after and field goal attempts and Cantrell will punt. Woodrum also stated that Ashcraft will play a key role on special teams as well as getting some playing time at defensive end while junior Ian Hartley will back up the kickers and punter.

“We’re pretty deep and a lot of people don’t realize how important that is on special teams,” Woodrum said. “Plus, they’re all underclassmen and that’s nice. A lot of kids will have to play a lot, especially early in the season and until we get our depth built up.”

Assisting Woodrum are Josh Coffman, Seth Corder, Tim Fortney, Steve Smith, Tim Ward, Adam Clark, Jeremy Ady, Andrew Davis, Denny Matthews and Judd Baker.

Two long-time assistants have left the program. Craig Clarke exited to take the head coaching position at Maysville High School while Jerry Shook has taken time off to spend with his young family.

“Practically our whole staff played in our system are real good young coaches who’ve moved up. There is a lot of enthusiasm and we need that because I am getting old,” Woodrum joked. “When you have guys on your staff who graduated from Coshocton, it means a lot to them. All of the assistants are tremendous coaches. This is a very close-knit staff.”

The Redskins open their season on Friday, Aug. 24, traveling to East Knox. The first home contest will be Sept. 7 against West Holmes.

“We’re going to take them one at a time and not look ahead. It’s very important that the kids respect every opponent,” said Woodrum, who in the summer participated as an assistant coach in the Ohio versus Pennsylvania “Big 33” game.

“One of the biggest things I took away from that game is all the preparation that is necessary,” he said. “It’ doesn’t matter how good you are, as long as you prepare, you’re going to be okay.”

The Generals finished last season with a record of 8-3, including a rare loss in InterValley Conference play to rival Garaway and state powerhouse Liberty Center.

They also fell to Lucasville Valley in the opening round of the Division V playoffs, 2821, but marked the ninth consecutive year that the Orange and Black reached the postseason.

Despite the loss to Garaway, Ridgewood still captured another IVC title.

“We’re shooting for our 10th consecutive playoff,” Slusser said. “At one time, it was a big deal to make the playoffs but now it’s expected but our schedule is unbelievable.”

The Generals open the season on Friday, Aug. 24 against Buckeye Trail. Other nonconference clashes include Waynedale, Martins Ferry and Liberty Center.

Assisting Slusser will be Jamie McCrea, Jason Prater, Todd Cabot, Chris Cabot, Jake Lahna, Nate Carpenter, Ryan Gress, Chad Massie, Dusty Shroyer and Mike Masloski.

“We have a very dedicated group who take great pride in the program,” Slusser said.

“They’ve been around and they know the tradition. They’ve heard a lot of people saying that this is the year that everyone will be getting back at us and this group wants to prove they can carry on the tradition.”

“We’re still looking for a home run hitter offensively,” said Slusser. “Lowe can throw the football a little bit but we’re still looking for some receivers to step up.”

Up on the offensive line, Slusser expects junior Andrew Vaughn to be at center, junior Jared Lindig and senior Jeremy Shamel at guard with Newell and senior Chris Davidson at the tackles. Top replacements include sophomores Blake Feldner and Trevor Fuller, as well as junior Jake Eckelberry.

Also trying to crack the lineup will be junior Tommy Layman and sophomores Austin Leasure, Matt Leitz, Ben Hostetler, Gage Young, Colton Buchanon and Kelly Barthalow, Junior Laiken Bluck will also see time at tight end with sophomore Derek Ridenour battling for action.

“We think we’re pretty deep on the line,” Slusser said. “We have at least eight kids who we’re extremely comfortable with and believe there are others who will come along as the season progresses.

On the other side of the ball, Davidson and Grove will be on the ends with Vaughn and Bluck as their understudies. Eckelberry and Newell will be at the tackles with Fuller and sophomore Matt Leitz backing them up.

At inside linebacker, it will be Bethel and Shamel while Montague and freshman Brice Hammond seeing some action. At outside backer, it will be Bergeron, Cognion and Zeigler rotating. Sophomore Thor Reed is also vying for action.

The secondary will consist of McPherson, Mitchell, Whitt, Croston and C.J. Berry.

On special teams, Mitchell will perform the kicking and punting with Grove the longsnapper.

All told, the Generals’ roster contains nine seniors, eight juniors, 19 sophomores and 12

Most of the firepower from last year is gone, but the expectations remain at Ridgewood High School as the 2012 football season rolls in.

The Generals have been beset by the loss of a terrific graduating class, including Michigan State University signee Evan Jones as well as all Inter-Valley Conference first-teamers Jake Zeigler, Dakota Albertson, Lenard Davidson and Trent Lingo.

Other key losses include quarterback Chris Saylor, Brian McElhaney and Joe Holmes Along with that list of speedy and talented players, also went the majority of the team’s offensive weapons which has put head coach John Slusser and his staff in a reloading mode.

“We’re in the process of figuring out what we can and can’t do,” said Slusser. “One thing that remains consistent is that our kids still play and work hard. Right now, our biggest challenge is getting our defense where we can make tackles and get people to the ball. We’re not as fast as teams we’ve had the past few years.

Among the top returning players are senior lineman Ben Newell and two-way end Christian Grove.

Taking over the reins at quarterback is junior Ryan Lowe with junior Garrett Bethel at fullback. The wingback positions will be manned by seniors Brett Mitchell, Dillon McPherson, junior Seth Bergeron and sophomore Alex Croston.

Backing up Lowe will be sophomore Logan Slusser while others hoping for playing time in the offensive backfield include senior Ryan Cognion, juniors Tevis Whitt, D.J. Varian, David Hunt and Cole Zeigler, sophomores Jarrett Art, Austin Savage and Tommy Montague.

Playing split end will be seniors Kody Hains and Josh King with their backups including sophomores Morgan Klosinski and Dakota Fixel.

“We’re just hoping we can do the things we’ve done in the past,” Slusser said. “We

Coshocton Hospital is pleased to welcome a new physician whose training in the field of sports medicine brings an exciting new specialty to local health care the evaluation, prevention and management of sports-related injuries. Cesareo Tongco, MD - or “Dr. Bob” as his patients like to call him, is board certified in family medicine and fellowship-trained in sports medicine. His office is located at the Coshocton Hospital Family Physicians Clinic at 440 Browns Lane.

Dr. Tongco provides a comprehensive approach to TONGCO sports medicine that includes the evaluation and management of sports-related injuries, concussion management, evaluation of return-to-play issues, simple fracture care, overuse injuries, and the treatment of medical issues as related to athletic participation including asthma, diabetes, hypertension, etc. He has significant experience in the evaluation and management of arthritis in the middle-aged and senior population, and is able to provide nonsurgical options such as joint injections and viscosupplementation when appropriate.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the East in the Philippines, Dr. Tongco completed his internship at the Philippine Air Force General Hospital. He then completed his residency in family medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital and the University of Toledo. He

recently completed his fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mi. His experience includes team physician coverage at the high school, college, and professional levels.

Dr. Tongco’s three-pronged approach to sports medicine, prevention, evaluation and injury/medical management, is designed to keep patients healthy and active for a lifetime. He is able to take care of young athletes through collaborations as a high school team physician or in programs like concussion clinics, in addition to providing comprehensive care in the physician office setting. His patients also include adult athletes and “weekend warriors” who want to maintain good health to help ensure longterm participation in sports and exercise.

River View building new football program A product of tremendously successful high school and college football programs, it is no secret to Josh Lahmers what it will take to send River View in the right direction.

“We’re teaching the fundamentals of the game,” said Lahmers, who is embarking on his first season as head coach at RVHS. “We’re going over a lot of basics such as blocking, tackling. That’s kind of what we have preached from day one. We have a lot of work to do.”

While the ‘Construction Ahead’ signs around the practice field are figurative, Lahmers and his staff are seeing signs of progress.

“There are a lot of things that we’re trying to fix and we’ve gotten better over the past few weeks,” he said. “Each day has its setbacks but also each day we see something that gets a little bit better.”

Taking over the program for Chad Massie, who resigned and subsequently took a position as an assistant at Ridgewood, Lahmers is a graduate, a former player and assistant coach on some very successful teams at the school in West Lafayette.

That, combined with the experience of spending four years as a member of the football program at Division III college powerhouse Mount Union has provided Lahmers with some extremely valuable insight on what it will take to turn River View’s fortunes around.

The Black Bears were 2-8 last season and just 8-42 over the past five seasons.

“We’ve talked about creating tradition here at River View,” Lahmers said. “Unlike Coshocton and unlike Ridgewood where there is a rich tradition and they have been very successful over the last 20 years, we have to create that ourselves.

“When people now see us play I think they are going to be quick to say ‘that’s how Ridgewood does it’, but you know what? We were very successful at Ridgewood so why wouldn’t a coach want to blueprint that to create a program and try to foster that success here?” he said “There is a difference between wanting to do that and actually going out and doing it. We’re trying to connect the dots there. We see there’s potential. There are some big, fast and talented kids. They are nice athletes… We just have to turn them into football players.”

The Black Bears have a solid leader in senior quarterback John Brillhart, who will be a third-year starter but learning to operate out of the Wing-T offense.

“He’s going to be a big asset to our team,” Lahmers said. “He shows a lot of potential.”

Lahmers also hopes to get contributions on offense from senior running backs Clay Holsclaw and Josh Knight, as well as junior Brandon Adams. Seniors Seth McMahan and Devin Smith will be the wide receivers while juniors M.J. Carey and Eric Hampton will play tight end.

Depth at wideout will include seniors Travis Guilliams and Branden Wriston.

He also hopes to get contributions at the running back position from senior Kurt Strongosky and sophomores Jon Barker and Dylan Shepler. Sophomore Zach Fouch is the back-up quarterback.

In the trenches, Lahmers is looking at Nate Smith at center, Brodie Lanham and Doug Boals at guard and Jake Mathews and Tyler Triplett at tackle. All are juniors with the exception of Boals, who is a sophomore.

Also looking for playing time on the O-line are seniors Anthony Gross, juniors Corey Johnson, Josh Kempf, Blake McKee and sophomores Tim Burris, Leeland Lauvray and Blake Lee. On the defensive side of the ball and in a 4-4 alignment Gross and Kempf will likely be the starting tackles, joined by McKee and Smith on the ends with their primary back-ups consisting of Johnson and sophomore Keith Burchfield.

“The O-Line and D-Line are where we are the youngest,” Lahmers said. “We lost almost the entire line through graduation so we are rebuilding on both sides of the ball. The line is definitely the cornerstone to any football program and that’s what we’re trying to start with.

“We’ve moved a lot of people around some placed skill guys into those positions. One of the fastest kids on the team (Boals) is only 155 pounds but we moved him to the line to use his skills.”

Others who Lahmers hopes to rotate through are Johnson, Lanham, Matthews and Triplett.

Boals will also contribute on the defensive side as one of the linebackers where he will be joined by Holsclaw, Shepler and Barker. Also hoping to see action there are Carey, Strongosky and Lee. In the defensive backfield it will be Brillhart, Adams, Hampton, Smith, McMahan and Knight getting the majority of the reps with seniors Guilliams, Wriston and Fouch, backing them up.

“We’re a little behind where we want to be defensively and offensively and we’ve just recently put in some special teams plays because we’ve been focusing so much on fundamental football and doing the little things right. If you do the little things right, it leads to success,” Lahmers said.

The Black Bears have a roster of 44 players and Lahmers hopes to pick up a few more once school begins. The freshman squad consists of 17 players.

“In every position we have kids who have potential and the positive thing is that so far, they’ve been coachable for the most part,” Lahmers said. “We just need a more consistent commitment and we are battling some injuries.

You’re going to get hurt but there’s a difference between getting hurt and being injured. Some days we see good things where the kids are fulfilling their potential.”

“That got some excitement going and it carried over a little bit I think,” Lahmers said.

In their second outing, Indian Valley outscored River View 3-1.

“We had a lot of missed tackles in that scrimmage and that goes back to fundamentals,” the coach added. “Some days are real frustrating because we need to get things done. The kids need to understand that we’re on the football field for a reason. We’ve really tried to emphasize that. They need to focus on what we’re telling and coaching them on the practice field and take it to the game field.

The Black Bears opened the 2011 season with a 47-18 win over West Muskingum, then beat Zanesville Rosecrans 31-21 in week nine – the latter somewhat impressive in that the Bishops reached the Division VI playoffs and recorded a first-round victory.

With the latter victory, River View finished in a tie for third place in the Gray Division of the East Central Ohio League, something Lahmers certainly hopes to improve upon.

“When I was interviewed by the administration for this job, I was asked how soon they would see a change in the program and I told them they should expect it immediately. I don’t know how many games we’ll win or lose but I know we will put a team on the field that will compete and give us effort every night. We will have that mindset.

“How many wins will that translate into?

I’m hoping for more wins than losses, obviously, but I don’t know if that’s realistic out of the gate.

It’s more about whether what we’re putting on the field is leading to creating a successful environment and to a successful program rather than being counterproductive.

“People want to see success and it’s going to take some time but at the same time, I think if the kids accept this new mentality and new philosophies and buy into the system that’s going to be in place, I think we can have success sooner than later. It just depends on how we progress.”

Assisting Lahmers are Kevin Smith, Bart Mathews, Robb Hendershot, Matt Proper and Steve Kick.

“We have guys who have some rich tradition and some success and know what it takes I think that will go a long ways in helping change the mentality,” Lahmers added. “We have major challenges ahead of us but I know that we as a staff are going to prepare our kids the best we can and we’re going to create a mentality that we can – and need – to compete. If they believe in what we’re doing we will have success.”

West Muskingum is again River View’s foe on opening night with a home game on Saturday, Aug. 25 with their first road game at West Holmes the following Friday.

The class of 2015 will mark 50 graduating classes of students to walk the hallways of River View High School. There have been tremendous changes over the 50 years to the River View community, but one thing remains the same, Black Bear Pride.

The 50th anniversary marks a momentous time in the history of River View High School and River View Local School District. It is fitting that this occasion be celebrated in a special way with a commemorative bronze bear being placed in front of River View High School as a lasting tribute to each graduate.

The idea of this Bronze Bear Project was created by Brandon Stewart, 2011 president of the RV Student Council. As a result, the class of 2011 wanted to erect a statue in front of River View High School to commemorate their class and its accomplishments.

The project has evolved by working with world-renowned bronze artist Allan Cottrill of Zanesville. Cottrill has worked with many schools in several states to create a lasting memory of their mascot to commemorate school expansions, stadium constructions, etc.

“I drew out a sketch of what we wanted and showed him our ideas,” Stewart said. “The small bronze bear that sits in the main office now is something that he already had. I thought it was perfect and everything just kind of fell into place.”

An eight-foot tall bronze bear will be erected in August of 2014. This will mark the 50th graduating senior class in the building.

Everyone will be invited to attend a celebration to unveil this tremendous work of art - the Bronze Bear - along with a plaque to mark the project’s completion.

The bear will be secured in its base with a cement pad and anchor bolts along with a lighting system surrounding the bear so it will be visible in the evening.

“Mr. Rinkes (River View’s principal) and I talked about the light system so after a nice football victory you can see the black bear and know that that is us,” Stewart said. “It will bring all kinds of school spirit to River View. I’m so

August 26th, 1962 Woodrow Bickel of Coshocton had served 25 years with the Stone Container Co. and had been awarded a small watch for his years of dedicated service by Marvin Stone, vicepresident of the firm. Bickel had been a shift supervisor at the Coshocton paperboard mill of Stone Container. His 25 years of service was interrupted only once when Bickel left for three and a half years to serve in the United States Army during World War II with service in the ETO.

August 22nd, 1972 The Warsaw Emergency Squad had recently been organized after Mayor Robert Lewellen was notified that the village was to receive a federal grant of $40,805 to purchase two fully-equipped ambulances. The grant, made through the Ohio Department of Health, made it possible to operate a 24-hour emergency ambulance service to over 5,000 Coshocton County residents beginning that fall. The squad was composed of 20 men and women who had been trained to handle all phases of emergencies. The chief of the squad was to be Lynn Fischer.

August 25th, 1982 Amy Ransom, a senior at Coshocton High School, had been singing ever since she was a little girl. So it came as no surprise when she took first place at the Eighth Annual Governor’s Statewide Gospel and Choir Music Contest at the state fair. She had begun taking voice lessons a few months prior to the contest and had a first soprano voice that could reach three octaves. Ransom had also won other trophies throughout her musical career and wanted to record someday. Her three goals in life were to meet Barbra Streistand, sing a note high enough to break glass, and be in a Coca-Cola commercial.

August 24th, 1952 The new Coshocton-Roscoe Bridge was really coming along according to Paul K. Brenner, vice president of the Beaumont Bridge Co. who was in charge of the project. Over the past week, construction had really picked up and included the beginning of excavation operations on a second pier, pouring concrete into deeply-embedded piling, and building forms for footers on the first pier. The two piers that were presently under construction were No. 5, located at the water’s edge at the foot of Chestnut St., and No. 3 to be erected at the confluence of the Tuscarawas and Walhonding Rivers.

Triple Locks starts season CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

The Triple Locks Theatre will begin its 64th season with “37 Postcards.”

The play, directed by Nathan Mayse, is a comedy about a dysfunctional family. It features four women (ages 20-80) and two men (ages 30-60).

Auditions for the play will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, and 7 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 27, at the Triple Locks Theatre.

Production dates are Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, 19-20, and 2627. For more audition information, contact Nathan Mayse at 502-0080.

The season also includes “1940s Radio Hour – A Christmas Carol,” which combines drama and comedy, “Always…Patsy Clines,” a musical about Patsy Cline and her most devoted fan, and “Nunsense,” which will give theater goers an evening of song, dance, bingo and baking.
