ensure safety is the prime concern before every flight. Following the flight, each young person, will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook”, which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The Logbook is also accessible on the Web at www.youngeagles. org. Other activities scheduled for the Flight Rally include a pancake, egg and sausage breakfast for $6 catered by Simply for You Catering. first attendant. Madelyn Meiser, 8, was named the princess second attendant. Boyer said, “It feels great. I’ve been waiting awhile now for this opportunity. I’m really glad now that I can share Coshocton as the princess during my travels”. Boyer said she was looking forward to, “going to new places and meeting new people”. Marjorie Tidrick was named this year’s Canal Festival senior queen. Tidrick remarked, “It seems quite an honor. I enjoy doing the volunteer work, especially playing my accordion for the people in the nursing homes. I play a lot of polkas and that’s what they enjoy the best. Tidrick said that she would rather play than have her accordion set around. I enjoy my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I hope the Canal Festival turns out nice and it doesn’t rain on the parade”. The Coshocton Canal Festival Queen, Princess and Senior Queen events are sponsored and supported by Coshocton Towne Centre Association. Those that devoted the many, many hours to ensure that this event continues deserve our gratitude. The Mayor’s Promenade started at the gazebo Sunday afternoon on the Courtsquare. Following the presentation of awards for best dressed in various age categories, authentic costume and other awards, Coshocton Mayor Steve Mercer and wife Sharon led the canal era enthusiasts around the Courtsquare, down Chestnut Street and back up Main Street. Amanda Meiser, who chaired the 2010 Mayor’s Promenade, said about continuing the tradition of the Promenade, “I’m all about tradition and I was involved with the Canal Festival when I was young. I want to see that tradition live on not just for my kids but for future generations too. If this is what I can do, that’s what I’m going to do to keep it going. I think everybody enjoys playing dress-up but when you can play dress-up and there’s some history to it and its local that gives you some ownership to it and that makes it special”.

WE COME, PESTS GO! 0058_101409

The forty first annual Coshocton Canal Festival is in the books and for those that endured the downpour during the parade, it was a doozy. Kids didn’t seem to mind of course, running to and fro to grab those elusive pieces of candy from some of the nearly 150 participating parade units. Thursday evening saw the crowning of the junior queen and mini king and queen. Shayna Boyer, daughter of Shawn and Wendy Boyer captured the junior queen title while Sophia Meiser, daughter of Tony and Amanda Meiser, was named the first attendant. Mom Wendy commented, “I’m tickled to death. We are very interested in the history of Coshocton. It’s been kind of neat to be involved in this – the things that we’ve uncovered and learned about. We’ve spent time in Roscoe. The history is so amazing. They’ve met a lot of nice girls and people during their travels. Lots of these girls want to be active in their community”. Second attendant is Gracee Robertson, daughter of Doug and Mary Robertson. Dalton Robertson, brother of Gracee, was named the mini-king for 2010-2011. Boyer said, “It feels good. I’m looking forward to dressing up and stuff”. Haylee Adkins, 5, daughter of Chris and Lisa Adkins, was named the mini-queen and said it “felt good”. Mom Lisa remarked, “It feels really good. I’m proud of her, she did a great job”. Dad added that he also is proud of Haylee. Torionna Wine, 4, daughter of Lisa Wine, is first attendant and Rebecca Shearn, 4, daughter of June Kistler and Josh Shearn, is second attendant. Mike Bechtol of WTNS Radio served as the emcee. A hot and humid Friday evening saw the crowning of 17 year old Cali LaVigne of West Lafayette as the new Canal Festival queen. LaVigne said, “I am so happy. I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time. I can’t wait to represent Coshocton in the upcoming festivals”. LaVigne will be a senior at Ridgewood. LaVigne added, “I can’t wait to spend time with my court and travelling. We will have a great time”. Kassidy Meek, 15, daughter of Kevin and Diane Meek, was named the queen’s first attendant, and Arieka Galloway, 14, daughter of Jeff and Amy Galloway, was named the queen’s second attendant. Tea’ Boyer was named the Canal Festival Princess for 2010-2011. Boyer wore a bathing suit complete with hat suitable for the time period. Amy Jo Johnson, 12, daughter of Mike and Connie Johnson was named the Princess

Apple Butter Festival coming soon

There’s something special about autumn in Roscoe Village. Perhaps it’s the splendor of the scenery in southern Ohio’s rolling hills, the crisp mornings and warm afternoons, and the smoky-sweet scent of homemade apple butter simmering over an open fire that combine to make the Apple Butter Stirrin’ in Historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton synonymous with fall. For 41 years, the Apple Butter Stirrin’ has attracted crowds of all ages to this restored 1800s canal town to experience the sights, sounds and flavors of the season. The three days of Apple Butter Stirrin’ officially begin on Friday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. with the opening of the craft booth-lined street. The craft vendors, dressed in costume for this event, offer a wide variety of items from candles and pottery to dried flower wreaths and birdhouses. Of course, no stroll through the craft booths would be complete without sampling the tempting food. Just a few delectable offerings you’ll find include bison burgers, fry pies, roasted corn, smoked turkey legs, cinnamon-roasted nuts, apple butter burgers, kettle corn, hot apple dumplings & fritters, and hickory-smoked sausage on a stick. A fun attraction to the festivities is the gas-powered John Deere Hit & Miss ice cream maker provided by Old Time Country Freezer. With one taste of the product, anyone could understand why homemade is worth the trouble! Roscoe Village is a restored canal town that flourished in the early 1800s as the Ohio and Erie

Canal wound its way through Ohio. Many of the original buildings still stand along the original canal bed. Costumed interpreters spin the tales of the early 19th century and a nearby canal boat offers a sample of life on the canal with its horsedrawn rides. The candlelit tour, “The Spirit of Roscoe”, is offered at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 and 16 during the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival. This autumn tour walks the guests through the historic village while telling the tales of the spirited folk who once made the quaint canal town their home. Traditions are certainly the benchmark of the Apple Butter Stirrin’ festivities. The annual spelling bee pits local 7th and 8th grade competitors against each other on Saturday morning in the Roscoe School House. Younger visitors can enjoy the kids’ activity area, which includes old-fashioned games and pumpkin decorating. Sunday’s activities include the craft auction and the annual quilt raffle drawing for the handmade quilt made by Roscoe Village volunteer quilters. All the weekend’s events are accented by musical entertainment with performances by traditional dulcimer players, bluegrass bands, gospel singers, and country music artists. The festival runs Oct. 15 - 17 from 10 am – 6 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday. For additional information, call 800-877-1830 or 622-9310. 650 pints of blood each day to meet patient need in 41 hospitals. In addition to providing blood to our community, the American Red Cross also provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.

As the 2010 Ohio State football season kicks off, the American Red Cross will give away a pair of tickets to each of the home football game including a grand prize ticket pair to the Ohio State – Michigan game. While Ohio State – Michigan game tickets have been offered in past years, this is the first time blood donors have the chance to win tickets to any OSU home game all season long. Those who come to give blood between now and Nov. 19 can enter to win one of seven separate drawings for home game tickets with a grand prize drawing for the Ohio State - Michigan game hosted on Nov. 27. “This is a great way to show your team spirit for Ohio State and support your community by donating blood,” said Rodney Wilson, communication manager for the Central Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. This promotion is designed to help recruit blood donors in Central Ohio in order to support patients at 41 area hospitals. The need for blood is constant. Trauma victims, cancer patients, premature babies and children who suffer from sickle cell disease often need blood products to survive every day here in the central Ohio community. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood, and in Central Ohio alone, the Red Cross needs more than 650 donors each day to support patients at area hospitals. To schedule an appointment and to learn more about the OSU ticket promotion, visit redcrossblood.org. To schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. If you are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), meet height and weigh requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in good general health, you may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present positive identification. The Central Ohio Blood Services Region serves 27 counties, and needs to collect about

Coshocton Varsity Football Team

Redskins set for success

Throughout the history of Coshocton High School athletics there have been many instances where the standout players graduate and all the sudden, it’s time for replacements to fulfill new roles. This year, the Redskins football team finds itself needing to address some personnel adjustments as the 2010 season. Most significant is long-time assistant Jim Woodrum, who was hired to replace Marty Arganbright as head coach. Also gone are Marcus Johnston, the Division IV Ohio player of the year, lineman Layton Graves, a first team all-stater and Dom McCluskey, who teamed with Johnston at running back and gave CHS a 1,000-yard plus duo and quarterback Logan Huebner. But Woodrum is relishing the thought of being in charge of finding the right fit for the right person. “This is a dream come true for me, obviously,” Woodrum said. “I graduated from here and to take over this program, You could not walk into a better situation as a head coach as I am. “We lost a great group of seniors . . . a very competitive group. They had success in football but they also had success in every sport they played as seniors last year. It won’t be easy replacing them but we’ve been in this situation several times before.” The Redskins return a wigwam full of experience on the offensive and defensive line and most of the skill-position players benefited from the extended season of a year ago. Combined with the long-standing philosophy of building for tomorrow while playing for today, Woodrum doesn’t have a lot of the stress that other first-year mentors may have. “ I’m so fortunate because this program is set for me,” Woodrum said. “It started about 26 years ago with John Kelley and it’s just went on with Jimmy Arganbright, Wade Lucas and then

Marty so it’s been an easy transition. “ As a staff, we’ve been together so long that when we started two-a-days this year, it was like nothing had changed. Everything was the same. The drills. The practice. Pretty much everything. All of us are familiar with the kids and they’ve learned our system all the way up through. It’s so easy walking into a program like this.” Helping ease the transition from offensive coordinator to head coach was made even easier when he scans across the faces among his squad of 36. Among them Zach Shaw a returning first team all-state linebacker, one of a dozen seniors. He will again play inside backer but will move into the starting fullback slot on offense. He’ll join on offense the explosive halfback duo of J.J. McKay and Saquore Harris and first year quarterback Brody Philabaum. “J.J. had a similar role last year on offense so with the O-line and the backs we have it

by jim barstow takes a little bit of pressure off that quarterback position,” Woodrum said. Philabaum will be shooting for his third varsity letter, taking over as placekicker as a freshman. Challenged at that position by Evan Johnson, Philabaum will assume punting duties as well. Clay Andrews will play split end. Up front, Justin “JT” Thompson returns as the leader of the O-line with he and Nathan Conidi at the guards and Chuck Mikulik and Shane Appis at tackle. Drew McNichols returns to start at center for the second year. Shaw, McKay, Andrews, Thompson and Mikulik are seniors. Justin Lillibridge and J.J. Tarman, another senior, will see playing time at tackle and Chris Huebner will rotate in at guard. “We don’t have a lot of depth on the O-line but we have some good kids there,” Woodrum said. Philabaum is backed up by Brock Bolden. Tanner Cognion is the third option but he is in the mix at halfback as is Dylan Ogle. Third-year standout Jacob Bresciani will play halfback and/or split time with Ren Simpson at tight end, but the one definite is that he will team up with Shaw for a pair of inside linebackers to reckon with. Andrews and Zack Cantrell will be in the outside slots. McNichols, Thompson, Conidi, Appis, Tarman and Lillibridge will see duty on the D-line as should Kyle Nelson, especially in passing situations. Landon Arnold will see time at end and Mukulik at tackle. “We have a lot of kids to work in and out of there to give some kids some breathers and help us out that way because several kids play on offense too,” Woodrum said. In the secondary will be Cognion, Ogle and JJ McKay. “One thing at Coshocton, we’ve always had good hard-nosed kids who want to play, tackle and hit,” Woodrum said. “As long as you have that on defense it doesn’t matter what I call, as long as they run to the football and tackle.” The Redskins open the season on the road, playing at East Knox on Aug. 27 and Akron Manchester on Sept. 3. The home opener at Stewart Field is Sept. 10.

One of the more visible symbols of Ohio State athletics is Brutus Buckeye, the school’s mascot. In 1965, an art student designed and introduced the first Brutus, while the name was chosen in a contest. The mascot began as a hardened papier mache affair that looked like a bowling ball with legs. In 1975, a radical new Brutus was designed with a prune-like head and a man’s body. That attempt was booed off the field and was re-worked, giving way to a mascot

comparable to the beloved present-day Brutus. The original choices for Ohio State’s mascot included a ram, an elk, a moose and the leading candidate, a male deer. Due to the skittish nature of deer, the idea of a mascot was tabled until January 1941 when “Chris,” a German police dog owned by an assistant cheerleader, made an appearance at a basketball game. The dog’s career was short-lived and OSU remained without an official mascot until the 1960s.

Generals set for another solid season

replacing Skylor McQuiston, who had a stellar career. Lingo will punt. So far, Slusser is seeing a smooth transition into new roles. “Our speed on defense and the stability of our offense are big deals for us,” Slusser said. “People are comfortable with what they’re doing and we just plug people in and play. “Playing 14 games and going deep into the playoffs helped some kids gain experience, but what also helped us was we played a lot of games where we got up on people and were able to play a lot of kids,” he said. “Many games, we played up to 50 kids and that helps. The Generals open the season at Buckeye Trail on Aug. 27 and will play their home opener in week two against Steubenville Catholic Central. “I think we’re still pretty talented but we’re still working on the work ethic,” he added. “Hopefully that kicks in.

Gone from the program are an outstanding group of graduates. Jake Conrad, who broke almost every conceivable rushing record his senior season, has taken his talents to Wittenberg University. He was named state player of the year in Division V last winter. Conrad running back mate Colt Landis is also attending WU while Troy Jones, a first team all-stater at defensive tackle and top wide

receiver Austin Bates, leaves some voids. “It’s not unusual for us to have to reload,” Slusser said. “We lose talent every year so we’re kind of accustomed to that but what we really lost was a great work ethic in last year’s group. It was truly a team that turned something into nothing.” Stepping in their places in the offensive backfield is Kevin Davis, a third-year QB, Nick Bellik at tailback, Richard Hawthorne and Jay McVay at halfback. Interchanging in will be Trent Lingo at tailback, Jarod Conrad and Brett Mitchell at halfback, and Chris Saylor at quarterback. Big tight end Evan Jones is joined at split end by Brian McElhaney and Dakota Albertson. Tackles will be Coy Jones and Chris Davidson with Jake Zeigler and Donald Mullet manning the guards. Jake Hamilton is the center. Also expected to see playing time on the line will be Joe Holmes and Tim Lillibridge. C.J. Grove will back up Jones at tight end. The group includes four returning starters, including Hawthorne (at guard last year), Evan Jones, Davis and Mullet. On the defensive side, leading tackler Jake Zeigler returns at linebacker. He is joined on the inside by Hawthorne, who started at defensive end a season ago. Outside backers will be Jarod Conrad and Bellik. The secondary will consist of a deep and talented corps of Lenard Davidson, Saylor, Albertson, McVay, McElhaney and Davis. At the ends it will be Lingo and Mullet with Evan Jones and Grove at the tackles. They will be spelled by Joe Holmes, Hamilton and Lillibridge. Mitchell will perform the placekicking,

Ridgewood

No other Ridgewood High School football team accomplished more than the 2009 squad and that’s enough of a reason to motivate this year’s squad. “They feel a lot of pressure to do the same thing again this year,” said head coach John Slusser. “It’s always our goal to win the InterValley Conference and make the state playoffs and this year is no different. “There are always high expectations at Ridgewood and we’re ready to take them on.” These Generals have a tough act to follow. In 2009, Ridgewood advanced to the state semifinal before losing to Youngstown Ursuline on a cold and wintry night at Canton Central Catholic. It being the sixth consecutive playoff appearance, the Generals had never advanced as far. And, their dominance of the IVC continued with a sixth title in seven years – a stretch i n which Ridgewood teams have lost just one game.

Black Bears on the prowl Black Bear country remains hungry for a successful high school football season and the 2010 River View High School squad hopes to serve it up. After a long string of sub .500 ledgers this could be a year of revenge. “This team wants to get things turned around,” River View High School coach Chad Massie said. “When we did our team goal talk, we let the guys throw things out there but we are just focusing on getting off on a good note.” Among Massie’s hard-working group is an offensive unit that will be spearheaded by a deep backfield. John Brillhart steps into a starting role at quarterback and will be working with Jordon Bradford, Gabe Mitchell, Shawn Wagner and Clay Holdsclaw at running back. Holdsclaw is also likely to split time with Kyle Glass. “I’m very happy with how things are going,” Massie said. “Brillhart is still getting used to the speed of the game but does a nice job of decisionmaking and is smart with the football. He just needs to be able to adjust to the Friday night atmosphere. Massie also pointed out that Bradford, Mitchell and Wagner were rotating across the backfield during the second half of last season. “They’re all running the ball hard and can give a different look when they have the ball,” he said. “We just hope to stay healthy and keep fresh legs in the game. Especially in the first

half of the season, it would be beneficial to use them. We’ll keep playing them until they give us a reason not to.” At tight end will be Daniel Adkins and Clay Wilson. Anchoring the line is left tackle Ethan McKee while Neal Fox is on the right side. Left guard will be Ian Kelton and Shawn Walters will play the right. Colton Kelso will start at center. When he recovers from an injury, Thane Weaver should see some action. “Right now we lack depth in the line and that’s a concern,” Massie said. “We’re still searching for backups. We get really young in our on our line and we’re young already.” McKee, Fox and Guthrie are the only three

by jim barstow returning starters on the offensive unit. Defensively, the Black Bears also have just three starters returning in Kelton, Hammond and Guthrie. Hammond and Guthrie are returning at cornerback with McMahon rotating in. Hammond gets the start at free safety and Wagner will play strong safety. Kelton is slated to play outside linebacker with the foursome of Walters, Bradford, Adkins and Holdsclaw seeing time at inside backer. Hammond will handle the placekicking while Steven Betz and Brillhart are battling at punter. “The kids just have a wantto type of attitude. These juniors and sophomores have had some success that some of the previous classes have not. They may have not gone undefeated but they’re confident in turning things around. They have a good time playing football and flying around and competing. “They believe in each other, this group does. They’re a pretty close-knit bunch with the mix of a few seniors and a large junior class. They’re rallying behind each other and have developed a lot stronger team chemistry. They feel if they listen and limit mistakes, we can put some wins in the column this year.” River View’s season begins Aug. 27 when it hosts former Muskingum Valley League foe West Muskingum. Its first road test will be Sept. 3 at West Holmes in the battle of the black and blue. “Our goal is to get our first win against West Muskingum,” Massie said. “With the front end of our schedule we think we have some chances but getting week one is huge.”

Fifty students and nearly 400 audience members enjoyed a fun filled week of acting and performances during the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s (MCT) residency in Coshocton last week. The event was presented by the Coshocton Airport Amphitheater. It was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Coshocton and supported by the Ohio Arts Council. Two actor/directors with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, Bridget Lachowsky and Caroline Garrison held open auditions on Monday, Aug. 16 at the Grace United Methodist Church and cast 50 Coshocton County youth in the musical production of The Princess and the Pea. Rehearsals were each day that week and performances took place on Friday night and Saturday morning, Aug. 20 and 21. The dress rehearsal and performances were scheduled to be at the Airport Amphitheater, but plans were changed late in the week to move the production to Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium. “We really wanted to introduce the community to the Amphitheater with this performance,” said Mike Morris, director of the Airport Amphitheater, “but with the temperatures in the high 90s and the high humidity, we didn’t want the children to suffer in the heat during the dress rehearsal and performances. We had to take their safety into consideration, so we were grateful to the high school for accommodating us here. We are also

Meddings and Alex Burton. Jane Crow was the accompanist. Carole Smith’s granddaughter, Morgan Kelton was a dust bunny in the show. “She really enjoyed this,” said Smith. “It is amazing how much these kids learned in less than a week.” Denise Leasure’s daughter Brianna also enjoyed being in the show. “She loved every minute of it,” said Leasure. “I was really impressed with these directors. They do a wonderful job with the kids and are so patient. There was so much for the kids to learn in such a short time. I would like to see Missoula Children’s Theatre come back to Coshocton.” Kirstin Slusser agrees. “My daughter Olivia had a great experience this week,” she said. “I was so impressed that they could get these kids to learn all this. From the audition process to the performances, they made the kids feel at ease. It would be nice to see this come here on an annual basis.” Elle Coffman, age 11, played a flower gardener in the show. “It was really fun,” she said. “My favorite part was—mostly all of it! I would like to do this again.” Rachel Lain, age 11, was a winter wind worker in the performance. “It was really fun and I learned a lot about acting,” she said. “The rehearsals were fun and I liked getting to know the other kids. The directors were really funny. I would like to do this again.” Kris Hardesty, Coshocton Airport Amphitheater board member, was the local coordinator for the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s residency in Coshocton. community, and it is amazing to see how much the kids grow that one week we spend with them sharing theatre.” Morris felt the MCT week in Coshocton was a great success. “It has truly been remarkable to see the growth in these kids both individually and as a group from Monday at auditions to the Friday night performance,” he said. The mission of the Missoula Children’s Theatre is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts. The week was probably summed up best when, at the end of each performance, director Garrison asked the audience to consider, “If these kids can accomplish all this in four and a half days, just think what they can accomplish with the rest of their lives.” For more information about Missoula Children’s Theatre, visit www.mctinc. org. to be involved with MCT. “I was impressed by the excellence in the way they ran the rehearsals and the professional performance—all without any tension,” she said. “These directors were top notch to handle 50 kids in a room for several hours at a time. They were more interested in making this a positive experience for the kids. We had several actors this week who had never done anything like this before and now they are saying they want to pursue more theater experiences in the future.” Caroline Garrison, MCT tour actor director says this has been a great week in Coshocton. This was their final week for their summer tour. “These kids have been a joy to work with,” she said. “They were so respectful. We don’t find that in every community we visit.” Bridget Lachowsky was also impressed with the youth she spent time with in Coshocton. “There are so many talented kids here,” she said. “We could tell at the auditions that pretty much any one of them could have filled any of the roles. They were all so outgoing and willing to try things. This is such a supportive community with your local theater and arts programs. It creates a safe environment for the kids to try new things like this. Acting can be scary and the kids were all very supportive of each other. We just don’t find this kind of support in all the towns we visit.” This was Garrison’s first year to work with MCT. She is Shakespearean actress and says she actually was worried about this job when she first started with MCT. “But working with the kids in all the communities we have visited so far has really changed my life,” she said. “Some of the places we visit have no arts in their

There are three types of runoff: agricultural, forestry and other, runoff not caused by agriculture or forestry. Agriculture and Forestry are both strongly tied into Coshocton, as well as Ohio’s economy. One out of seven Ohio jobs is from agriculture and it is a $98 billion-a-year industry, said Bigalow. The first stop on the tour was Gerald and Judy Finlay’s property at Roscoe Village, located at the intersection of State Route 16 and U.S. 36. At this stop, officials got a chance to look at his soybean field and listen to Gerald Finlay discuss cropland rotation and no-till planting, a technique in planting that is meant to increase the water in the soil and decrease erosion. The second stop on the tour was at Kyle Hamilton’s property, off of S.R. 36, where forestry contract with the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, or EQIP was discussed. The contract is through the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Services Program. Peter Eales, from the Ohio Division of Forestry, talked about EQIP contracts. There have been 99 since 2004 and they affect more than 4,000 acres of land. The main goal is to help grow native tree species. There are very aggressive species that were alien to Ohio that are not good for Ohio forests, Eales said. The third stop on the tour was at the David Lapp farm, on SR 36. New farming technologies were talked about and how they have made it easier for farmers to do crop rotations, fertilizer and pesticide application and filter strips. David Lapp then showed off his two acres of tobacco, which does well, but is considered unusual for this far north. The next stop on the tour was Sheriff Tim Rogers’ farm, where officials learned about fencing, pipeline, watering facilities. The final stop was at the Alan Brinker farm. Solar pumps, fencing, troughs and Grazing Management plans were the topic at this farm.

The Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District took the Coshocton’s officials on a tour of the county on Friday, Aug. 20. The tour started with a demonstration of how watersheds work. A watershed is an area of land where all of the water under it and that runs off of it goes to the same source. Ohio has two, Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Coshocton has three, the Muskingum, Walhonding and Tuscarawas rivers. The demonstration showed that everything from crop fertilizer to an oil spill in a driveway can end up in the closest water source after a rainstorm. The demonstration was intended to show that people need to be conscious of what they allow to pollute waterways considering only 1 percent of water is fresh. On average a single person in America uses 100 gallons of water a day. However, in the Third World, where 46 percent of people do not have water in their homes, it is common for a person to live on less than 5 gallons, said Deb Bigalow, from Coshocton Soil and Water and guide for the tour.
