Annual Bargain Fair

t was another busy week in Coshocton County!

I hope you were able to attend the 39th annual Coshocton Canal Festival MARK FORTUNE events, especially the parade on Saturday evening. And if you stayed for Mike Albert’s Elvis performance you had a double treat. This guy is just plain good. The Coshocton Towne Centre Association, The Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce and all the other organizations that helped sponsor the parade and all the weekend activities deserve a big “thank you”. Do you ever take a moment to offer a “thank you” to the local businesses, organizations and volunteers that make these events possible? Or do you think that we are just entitled to them? This word “entitlement” is being bantered about in the news on a frequent basis right now. Certain generations of Americans seem to think that they (we) are entitled to a good living, abundant housing filled with all the entertainment and technology that our incomes can afford, and of course, a nice vehicle or two, or three, to drive. Where did we get this feeling of entitlement? Perhaps because many of us grew up watching our parents work hard, struggle to make ends meet, and finally – be able to enjoy some of the fruits of their labors. We just wanted it sooner. Or maybe it is because as Americans, we seemingly want to give our children a “leg up” and ensure that they have a higher standard of living than their parents. That is going to be a challenge for many younger Americans as they watch their parents lose jobs, benefits, assets and deal with the stress of working multiple jobs in a difficult economy. The old adage of “go to college and make something of yourself” is now saddled with a huge load of loans and debt for the typical college age youth – so many of our youngsters are already starting life in the hole. But assuredly somewhere in the midst of all that advice we were so freely given by our elders is the one that seems to escape many in our country today, “Be sure to live within your means”. Perhaps

the modern slogan might be, “Be sure to live within your means – but if you are a struggling corporation and can’t the government will bail you out”. While this is happening, scores of “regular” Americans are tightening their belts, planting gardens, going green, conserving, and reducing expenses and frills. And this is a good thing. Because as we learn to truly live within our means we will slowly – but surely – right the ship that is our country. Reducing debt and expenses is a worthwhile means to a positive end. And it is being done by regular, everyday Americans, folk’s right here in little ‘ol Coshocton County and hundreds of communities just like it in the good ‘ol U.S.A. The message is that the government can’t do everything because – as we sometimes seem to forget – we are the government. Now, moving to the local scene, there are lots of local groups that stepped up to help our kids get back to school with the proper supplies. Women of Witness, area churches, The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County, New Beginnings Ministries and many others that we don’t know about provided assistance for those in need. They did not do it for recognition but a “thank you” needs to be said. Moving on, there are a couple of local events coming up that are both positive and fun. The annual Taste of Coshocton County will be held at the Lake Park Pavilion on Thursday, August 27 – this is the United Way kickoff for the season. And on Saturday, September 5 will be the “Wings Over Coshocton” event held at the airport. We have heard some people ask about an air show – there is no air show this year – this event continues on the same weekend and we urge you to support this event. The funds raised will go to help fund the extension of the runway to 5,000 feet. This is a critical venture for our community and ranks right up there with the four lane highway.

There is one place that you’ll see me this coming Saturday evening – and that’s at the Conesville Barber Shop Show – which will be at River View High School. The village of Conesville goes all out to bring this top notch talent to our community for a quite enjoyable evening of song and entertainment. Mayor Bill Appis and his gang will appreciate some much deserving support – as will all of the local events coming up. Enjoy! We’ll see ya around the county!

The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum and the Richard Downing Airport are seeking entries for a Wings Over Coshocton photography contest to be displayed at the airport on September 5th. Entries must be photographic images taken at past Wings Over Coshocton air shows and be matted and/or framed for display.

A $5 entry fee must accompany each piece. To be included in the judging, work must be delivered to the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum by August 30th. The winning photographer will receive 2 admissions and 10 food tickets to the Hot Wings Over Coshocton Festival on September 5th. The three best pieces will also be displayed at the museum through the end of September.

Hot Wings Over Coshocton will feature a hot wing competition, craft brews on tap, live music, a static plane display and the Wings Over Coshocton Photography Show.

Coshocton Redskins Fired Up For This Season Despite losing fifteen senior players, Coshocton Redskins football is excited and motivated about their season.

“We need some of our experienced players to go out and teach the younger players,” said Coach Marty Arganbright. “We try to prepare for each game throughout the week and talk mostly about being prepared mentally and physically. It’s a week-long process.”

Although Coshocton is losing so many seniors, they still have nine solid senior players who are returning starters.

“They’re doing a great job and they’re excited about their senior year,” said Arganbright. “We’re expecting a big season.”

Coach Arganbright said his main concern this year is working on depth and building a strong team. Some players are sophomores and juniors with little or no playing time. This is where the seniors need to be the leaders of the team and pass their skills onto the younger players.

“We want to play in the League Championship this year and qualify for the playoffs,” said Arganbright. “It’s difficult to accomplish, but with the team we have this year, it’s a possibility.”

Coshocton had their first scrimmage Saturday, August 15 at TriValley with a 2-0

win. They also have two new opponents this year which could prove challenging, Akron Manchester and East Knox. Coach Arganbright also said one of their biggest rivals is West Holmes, which they have played for forty years and it’s always been a good and challenging game.

Last year, the Redskins were 9-2. This year, the Coach and team have similar goals.

“Every year’s different,” said Arganbright.

“Last year was a great year. We had a lot of fun and we expect to be successful again this year.

One of our goals this year is to compete for the League Championship and we’re hoping to improve from last year.”

This is Coach Aganbright’s 9th year as head coach for Coshocton and 17th year coaching football.

“I’ve learned the more experience I have, the better prepared I am to handle different situations and each player differently,” said Arganbright. “You have to do what’s best for the kids on your team.”

During practices, Coach Arganbright, as well as the other coaches on staff, have been teaching the team the importance of taking care of themselves physically and how to work well as a team. That is the key to a great season.

“The kids have been doing a great job and are working well with their teammates,” said Arganbright. “And at the end of two-a-days, that can be harder because everyone’s getting tired by then. I really have to give credit to the seniors. They have been positive and shown great leadership.”

There are eleven coaches on staff grades seven through twelve, five varsity, two freshmen, and two seventh and eighth.

“We are very fortunate to have coaches who know and understand the game,” said Arganbright. “They always do what’s best for the kids, and most are veteran coaches and have played for Coshocton in the past. They really care about these kids.”

Some players to watch this season are Marcus Johnson, number twenty-seven, and Dominique McCluskey, number twenty-two.

“They’ve been playing for a couple of years and have played a lot on both sides of the ball,” said Arganbright. “They’re key players in on our team.”

Coshocton’s first game will be at home on Friday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. against East Knox.

“Hopefully we can get a lot of people to come out and support us this year and share the excitement.”

Patience Pays off at Ridgewood

The Ridgewood Generals are hoping to keep a winning tradition alive as it regroups from losing some size to last year’s graduating class.

The 2009 team is comprised of one of its biggest senior classes, nonetheless.

“Eighteen is a great number and the biggest class I can remember as seniors which I think allows us to be better,” says Head Coach John Slusser.

Slusser says the team is full of talent, but more will be known after the first battle on the field against Shadyside, August 29th. “I think this class has a great love for football,” Slusser says.

He says he hopes the younger athletes will learn from the returning experienced players and, “continue onto the next generation of Generals.”

The one-for-the thumb IVC Championship team knows with each year also comes change, but the players are going to take it one game at a time.

“We are much smaller than last year,” says Slusser, “and more in line with our typical teams. Every year is a new one and every team is different so the change is not realized until the end, and we can look back and evaluate.”

He knows the team is full of potential key players, and some are “very capable of stepping up as leaders and role models for our program,” says Slusser.

Injury took a toll a few times last year when others had to take a lead in absence of their peers. Jake Conrad, quarterback turned

junior running back then, stepped up and ran for 6 touchdowns to help the Generals emerge victorious over a stout opponent, the Garaway Pirates.

Derrick Young was injured during that game and did not play.

Slusser says, “You never know who your leaders are until you are faced with adversity.”

Conrad, senior RB/DB, is joined by senior teammates waiting another turn to shine after putting in their fair share of waiting time like others.

Some returning letterman bringing running legs to the field and possible numbers to the scoreboard include seniors Colt Landis; RB/DB and Austin Bates; WR/DB as well as numerous others. Returning at quarterback is junior, Kevin Davis, and some sleepers this year who could see some playing time.

Slusser says, “A lot of them (the seniors) stayed and have been a part of the program and have not worried about themselves. In this day when most kids either start or they quit, it has been very refreshing. The best thing they bring is their unselfishness.”

Last year, the winning IVC streak for the Generals was broken with an upset to the Malvern Hornets as they finally clenched the title after it was safe at home in West Lafayette for five years.

Injuries have not seemed to plague the team abundantly before, but “last year was when they affected our season,” Slusser admits. “In our biggest game, (Malvern) we were without two players…that played a big

part in the outcome.”

Slusser hopes the team shows both finesse and power. “We have one of our faster teams this year,” says Slusser, “but we also have some players that can be punishing… hopefully we can do a little of both.”

Other sleepers who may notice some playing time yet this season and to come could be Sophomores Jake Zeigler and Trent Lingo.

The offensive and defensive line is made up of numerous upper-classmen which are mostly seniors. The heftiest lineman hoping to do damage tops the scale at 290 pounds.

“As a whole I like the possibilities of our defense, we are fast and so far have had good enthusiasm,” Slusser says.

Ridgewood has replaced some rivals opponents, which will test the abilities of the usually powerful lines.

Taking the place of Crooksville on the 2009 schedule are the Shadyside Tigers, and the Crusaders of Steubenville Central Catholic now hold the slot where the county rival, Coshocton Redskins once were.

Slusser says the changes are “hoped to be positive…the expectations are always high here at Ridgewood but we are not planning on changing a lot.”

The teams to beat continue to be Malvern and Garaway in IVC competition Slusser says, but notably Tuscarawas Central Catholic and Sandy Valley should also have improved.

Slusser says he and his coaching staff have realistic goals, and that is “to be champions,” and they will worry about playoffs when the

time comes.

“This season I am looking forward to seeing how we progress defensively because last year was not good on that side of the ball,” Slusser said, “I am excited to test that out.”

Gaining another good year on the field however is also bitter sweet for the team. It also means soon letting go of molded athletes with closeknit friendships out from under the wings at Ridgewood.

Slusser says, “I’m excited to watch our seniors, some of whom I’ve very close with, and see how they handle this season.”

He says he looks forward to watching them perform to their potential. “They have been waiting a long time for this.”

Jared Johnson, age 5, son of Lisa Prince and Steven Johnson, said upon receiving his backpack from the Women of Witness, “It’s cool!” Mother Lisa remarked, “It’s very helpful for people that don’t have the money”. The backpack contained a pencil box, scissors, glue, markers and other assorted items needed for school. The Women of Witness Helping Hands Program is providing backpacks and needed supplies for area youth. Robin Gross, needs director at WOW, said, “The money for this program came from churches, businesses and organizations in the community.

The community has been awesome. The

support is just great. We have served 375 students right now and last year we served a total of 348. The need is even greater than it looks”, said Gross. Annie Hoop, Office Manager, said, “These kids are tickled to death. They’re very grateful. We have prayed with one young woman and are giving out a booklet that says, “God Loves You”.

guitar playing. From Waverly, The Stone Johnson Blues Band will wrap up the evening with their fabulous renditions of classic rock, jazz and blues. If you enjoy having your bones electrified by the wails of a harmonica, organ or guitar, you’ll love their performance.

Hospital recognizes teen volunteers hree Rivers herapy Services, LLC Providing Quality Physical & Occupational Therapy in your home!

Coshocton Hospital recognized area teens that performed over 1300 hours of volunteer service during the summer during a luncheon held at the hospital on Wednesday, August 19.

The teens worked in various departments at the hospital, including; medical records, materials management, Extended Care Facility, Oncology, business office, palliative care and accounting. Special certificates of achievement were awarded to Ally Tokar for 91 hours of service, Emily Fender for 92 hours of service and Nikki Jobe with 110 hours of volunteer service. Becky Shroyer, Director of Volunteer Services for Coshocton Hospital, stated, “It has been a real rewarding experience to work with the youth in our community and watch

them grow in just three months time. This is a real blessing for the hospital just having those extra hands here to help and volunteer. And it really meant something very special to the patients – a few minutes of conversation or reading to them for 15 minutes was worth a million”. Teen volunteer Nikki Jobe, who devoted 110 hours of volunteer time this summer said, “I had a lot of different experiences working in several different areas. I did this because my Grandma thought it would be good to do . . . I had a lot of fun with it”. Steve Miller, Director of Special Services for Coshocton Hospital remarked, “The hospital appreciates you taking time out of your busy schedule this summer to volunteer. You made a difference”.

1485th presents plaque

The 1485th Transportation Company of the Ohio Army National Guard presented a plaque of appreciation to local businessman John Baird of Baird Supply Company on Sunday, August 23. The plaque stated, “In sincere appreciation of your support of Kilo Company by donating materials and knowledge”. Baird commented, “I did this just to help the Ohio Guard for all they do”. Baird donated the bricks and materials that were used to build the sign that now greets anyone who visits the Ohio Army National Guard Readiness Center at the top of Airport Hill. The brick casement and sign were built and painted by SFC Dahmen, SSG Marraccini and SGT Meluch of the Ohio Army National Guard. Unit First Sergeant Randolph commented, “We highly appreciate what you did for us. This forms a good partnership with one of our local businesses – we try to get out in the community as much as possible and contributions like this let us know that the community is here to support us”. Hope Clinic’s planned opening will be Thursday, September 10th, 2009. The dates and hours of operation will be every Thursday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on a walkin basis. The clinic is staffed by caring, local medical and non-medical volunteers. Monetary donations are desperately needed and 100% of the donations will be used in the clinic for the care of uninsured Coshocton County residents.

Three Rivers Therapy Services has finally found “our” mission in the Hope Clinic, where we can serve our local community with our gift of rehabilitation, as well as, proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you haven’t heard about the Hope Clinic of Coshocton, it is a notfor-profit medical clinic, located at the Coshocton County Career Center. They are providing free basic medical care (non-narcotic medications and the treatment of uncomplicated illnesses) and rehabilitation education to uninsured residents of Coshocton County.

Founded on, non-denominational, Christian principles, the mission of the Hope Clinic is “To love God and love people and to use medicine as a vehicle to share the gift God gave us in Jesus”.

They are supported by the talents, time and donations of community members and local churches. Their goal is to witness to the ministry of Christ through

Okay, I cannot take credit for this headline. It was suggested by a local official at the annual Grand Army of the Republic Bean dinner held at McElwee Park in Newcastle on Sunday, August 16. In order to protect the individual, we will not name them here. Always held the third Sunday in August, several hundred gathered for a meal of soup beans and ham cooked in open kettles over a fire, cornbread, Cole slaw, potato salad, pie and if beans were not your fancy – hot dogs. Over 70 pounds of beans, two whole shoulder hams, three pounds of butter, onions, salt and pepper are added to make what has to be some of the best beans that you’ve ever eaten. The main taste tester is Martha Young, who declared following the flag raising ceremony by Boy Scout troop 344 from Howard, “They’re done!” She added, “With the salt and pepper it’s always a guess – once it’s in you can’t take it out!”

John Haines, who has been stirrin’ the beans for over 20 years, said, “It’s just good to help the community out more than anything else”. Milan Mizer, who has been coming to the event for about 70 years, said, “I like the beans – and you get to see people that you don’t see but once a year”. Morgan Anglin (age 11) who attended with her parents, said, “It’s just fun to be here”.

Upon observation, everyone has their own method of eating beans. Some add ketchup, some add nothing and others add another dash of salt or pepper, even sugar. And many mix their cornbread in with the beans for some added texture. Whatever your method – it seems to originate from family habits that have developed over the generations. Just like I butter my crackers – others prefer to add ketchup to their beans. I prefer them plain. The annual bean dinner always brings another tradition – that of the crowning of a new Bean Queen – or King.

scepter, several varieties of beans including grillin’ beans, baked beans and packages of beans. Lambert was told rather forcefully by Karen Locke and Imogene Hanes that all items must be returned in good order next year. That is, except for the highly coveted green shirt with yellow letters that proudly proclaims Lambert as the “Bean King 2009”. Based on the number of green “Bean Queen” and “Bean King” shirts proudly adorning members of The Walhonding Rube Band, (you must be in the band to win this high honor) you get to keep the shirt. Lambert remarked, “They just must have run out of people. If my Uncle Ernest is watching me, he is sure proud”. Wife Georgia exclaimed, “I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know if I can live with him now – Prince Charles has nothing over on him”.

Jeanell Branstool of Chestnut Ridge, who performed prior to the Walhonding Rube Band, commented, “We are what we are. What you see is what you get with our band. We’re an all gospel band and we keep the cross before us and let the Lord lead us and we follow. We’re a simple group that loves the Lord and we follow him. “Pound Clown” and Newcastle farmer, Everet Beatty, who coordinated the event this year said, “This has been a real good turnout. We still have about a half kettle of beans but ran out of potato salad and cole slaw. This is a good time but a lot of work. You get to see a lot of people that you don’t see often and catch up with old friends and see a lot of new faces too”. When asked why he enjoys doing it, Beatty said, “I just like serving people. Plus, this is one of the last GAR bean dinners in the state. It’s nice to see the whole community pull together . . . I can’t taste all the homemade pies but you sure want to taste ‘em all after trying one! And the beans were really good this year.

We just have a good time and it’s always nice when it all comes together.

It certainly wouldn’t happen without all of the volunteers that help put this event together. I appreciate all of their help”.

He says if someone breaks away he is working on the team being able to do the job.

“We have to have everything in step in time,” says Massie. “We want to be solid tacklers in space.”

The coaching staff is not prepared to give away much more bulletin –board material, but hopes that “We are the ones to surprise others this year,” says Massie.

He is hoping his team can step up this year but also feels the league is owned by teams such as Coshocton, Dover and New Philadelphia.

“They (those schools) have a tradition of believing they are going to win, rather than hope they are,” says Massie, “That is what our boys need to change.”

Massie says that believing in a win on the road and on the new turf in Dresden for game one will be a great start.

Along with the aforementioned changes, Massie says the team has grown in a way he hopes is positive. “We have a larger group of seniors this year,” he says. “There is a good group of kids who have dedicated themselves and have shown leadership.”

A good crew of younger players is capable of stepping into voids as well if needed. “We are excited about our younger kids, “says Massie. “ They have little experience at this next level, but if ever we had a rash of injuries, they’d have to toughen up.”

For example, Massie is glad that a former injury -stricken player, Senior Brian Conrad, will be returning to the field this year.

Conrad has been out of commission since his sophomore season.

Massie says he will bring “some new legs to the field, as well as 3 or 4 other guys.”

Some adjustments that may help return the Bears to a league power are within its offense.

River View Head Football Coach Chad Massie says the Black Bears are focusing on clinching a first win early in the season.

“We haven’t had success lately,” says Massie about the team, “ It’s been several years since we’ve had early wins… we need to come out with fire in the first weeks and build on that.”

He says a strategy for changing the program to a successful one this year will be “starting with the small victories.”

Massie says, “We need to take care of TriValley … we have not done that for 6 or 7 years. We need to focus on our first game.”

The Scotties are favored to win the Muskingum Valley League competition and make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Black Bears, as a member of The East Central Ohio League, have a few changes in their 2009 schedule.

Massie says for the most part the competition is about the same, except with Philo and later in the season, St. Thomas Aquinas also returns.

They will hold a Thunderbird Car Show on the street in Roscoe Village on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The car show will be open to the public and free to attend with live music, games and nearly 75 vintage Thunderbirds. A free shuttle will be running on Friday evening (5:00 – 8:00 p.m.) from Roscoe Village to downtown Coshocton's First Friday celebration.

"Whenever we have groups like this come into our county, they are always so impressed with how friendly the residents are here," continued Williamson. "So when you see these folks that week, just smile, wave and thank them for coming. The club members will be staying in various lodging facilities throughout the county. It is so good for Coshocton and the surrounding

Paliani and her husband, Lou, who is the president of the organization, live in San Antonio, Texas. They visited CASCO (Classic Auto Supply Company) in Coshocton last summer when they were traveling from Pittsburgh to Columbus. "We stayed at the Apple Butter Inn in Roscoe Village and had such a good time," she said. "We got to talking with some folks in the area and at the restaurants, and just fell in love with the area. I felt so good being there. Coshocton seemed to be a very patriotic area. We decided that maybe we could hold our annual convention in Coshocton with a 'Main Street America' theme."

On August 27th, 2009, the United Way of Coshocton County will kick off it's annual campaign with the 5th Annual "Taste of Coshocton County" event. The event will be held from 5:30 - 7:30pm at the Lake Park Pavilion. 16 restaurants/ caterers from around the county will be serving up their favorite dishes. Tickets can be purchased for $10 from any United Way board member, at the door or from the United Way office at 448 Main St. Tickets are limited and offered on a first come first serve basis.

Newcomerstown High School football team having been an assistant coach at Waynedale High School for six years.

“I’ve had a year to learn how to deal with some of the kids and to also build a relationship with them,” Brock said. “I’m able to read them a lot better and they’re able to understand me a little better too.

The first year, it’s almost like a deer in headlights, so this year, I feel more comfortable and confident.”

This year, the Newcomerstown team is lucky in that they have nine returning seniors and are only losing two starters from last year. They also have four paid and two volunteer coaches on staff. They have been practicing since the beginning of August and recently started practicing two days a week for four and a half hours every day with an hour and a half break.

Their first scrimmage was Friday, August 16 and their first game is Friday, August 28 at Caldwell.

The end of summer is quickly approaching and with the beginning of fall and schoolwork also comes the beginning of football season. At Newcomerstown High School, players have been practicing since the beginning of August and the team is set and ready for game time.

“I try to have the team prepared for every game,” said Coach Eric Brock, “I reassure them that they’re ready for this and they have practiced well. This is important, especially with a young team.”

Coach Brock pumps his players before each game with a Breakfast of Champions each Friday where they talk about different themes they have discussed throughout the weeks of practice, such as attitude, overcoming adversity, and playing well as a team.

“If they’re not pumped up and ready to go by the time they get on the field, there’s really nothing more I can do,” Brock said.

“It’s all up to them.”

The Ridgewood Young Farmers & Wives sponsored a tractor pull in conjunction with the Fresno Farmers Market on Saturday, August 15 at the former Fresno Elementary School. Brian Powell, who coordinated the event, said, “It’s a community service – this is the first time we’ve held the event here at the Fresno Farmer’s Market. We also do this at the Bakersville Homecoming and the West Lafayette Hometown Festival”. With 19 youth participating and being cheered on by parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, the youngsters were divided into five different weight classes. Dave Warren sponsored the trophies for the event. Karen Cutshall commented that the Fresno Farmers Market has, “everything from soup to nuts. “I’m real proud of this market”. Tracy Haines, who was at the market with daughter Katelyn and husband Robert, said, “We come to the market just about every week. The food, noodles and bread are delicious”.

Robert Haines said, “I pick up the ingredients to make homemade lemonade. Four lemons, water, one and a half cups of sugar – it’s the best lemonade ever!” The Fresno Farmers Market will be open every Saturday 8 am to noon through November. Jordan Miller, Thomas Ellis, Tyler Bradford and Seth Miller won the championship in the 15/16 year old division of the GusMacker Basketball Tournament in Lancaster, Ohio on August 8th and 9th, 2009. Thomas Ellis and Tyler Bradford are from Ridgewood High School and Jordan Miller and Seth Miller are from Garaway High School. They won two trophies, one for the championship and they also won the good sportsmanship award. There were sixteen teams in the tournament in their division.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest. The Firemen’s Fall Festival will hold its first pumpkin decorating contest on September 19.
