CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON Stars from an industry-wide annual competition. Nominated by industry peers and selected by an in-house panel, the 10 individuals chosen showcase an impressive array of accomplishments along with strong initiative, high energy, industry and community commitments, entrepreneurial prowess and demonstrated expertise in technology. Since PPB launched the program in 2010, it has become one of the most sought-after honors in the industry. “This year’s PPB Rising Stars are quite an impressive group,” said PPB editor Tina Berres Filipski. “It’s exciting to see what these individuals have accomplished in their short time in the industry and refreshing to see the skills and initiatives they are bringing to it. These are the most watchable young pros in the industry and we are delighted to spotlight them at this point in their careers.” This year’s Rising Stars were recognized on Aug. 9 at the PPAI North American Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Read more about them in PPB’s September issue. “It’s such a huge honor to be recognized in the Promotional Products industry,” said Hasseman. “And it’s great to a part of such a dynamic group.” For more information about Hasseman Marketing, please visit them at www. hassemanmarketing.com.

My morals

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To The Editor, Have you heard of the term Moral Relativism, it is a newer term that is being used to describe events like the ones I am going to talk about. The other day in the news there was a person in a major city parading around with the top of her body painted, that’s right, just paint and no clothes. YEP, that’s right, kinda crazy. Glad I was not there, but she should be asked a couple of questions, besides the obvious, what in the world are you doing? “Do you think people want to see you demoralize yourself like this”, and, “are you going to be held responsible for the thoughts and actions of those that see you”? You see there is more to what she is doing than just expressing her art work! This is what’s called Moral Relativism, it is a term where people do as they want, without regard to whom or what it affects; they develop their own set of morals. If I want to drive past the speed limit, if I want to text and drive, if I want to dress inappropriate, if I want to cuss out loud, If I want to talk loudly on a phone in public, if I choose not to obey someone in authority, if I choose to not use my turn signal, etc, it is all OK, because it is what I want to do. But, there is one slight problem with developing your own morals, you, are not alone, and your actions affect others. For an example think of the child / young adult that sees those actions and adopts them for their own set of morals. The cycle continues. Have you ever heard the statement “I don’t know where they learned that”? Well let me tell you. Frank T. Cichon West Lafayette

COSHOCTON – Jan Myers was honored to hear that Coshocton will be recognized as one of five best hometowns in “Ohio Magazine” 10th annual Ohio’s Best Hometowns November issue. “It speaks well of our community and all we have going on here,” she said. “They look at the whole package and everything we have here.” Myers, director of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau, said a writer from the magazine explored the city this summer and spoke with her office and Mayor Steve Mercer’s office. “She found things she wanted to focus on by utilizing our (the visitors bureau) website,” Myers said. “She wanted to go to new places and local favorites that local citizens really enjoy going to. She really wanted a local feel since this is about hometown. She wanted to know where we like to eat and hangout at and what we are proud of.” Some of the places the magazine’s writer and photographer visited were: Annin, Hannah Marie’s, English Ivy, the downtown area and Roscoe Village. “I was excited to show them the renovations at the courthouse,” Myers said. “It’s a signature feature of our downtown. We also showed them Roscoe Village, the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, Clary Gardens and other gems of our community that make it a great place to live and visit.” “Ohio Magazine” selected Coshocton because it embodies qualities that make Ohio hometowns so special: Friendly residents, beautiful parks, charming shops and a rich history that is celebrated to this day. “Hopefully they recognized that people who live here are committed to this community, are friendly to visitors and each other,” Myers said. “I also hope the community focuses on this positive news instead of what they sometimes see on the Internet and Facebook about Coshocton.” In this special collector’s issue, “Ohio Magazine” also recognizes four other communities as 2015–2016 Ohio’s Best Hometowns: Hudson, Huron, Powell and Tipp City. The issue will be on newsstands by Friday, Oct. 30. Subscriptions purchased by Wednesday, Sept. 9 will begin with the November issue. A digital edition of the issue can also be purchased through the iTunes App Store or for Android devices on Google Play. To determine the honorees, “Ohio Magazine” solicited nominations and conducted site visits across the state. The editors evaluated the nominees in six categories — community spirit, education, entertainment, health and safety, business environment and culture and heritage — to help finalize their selections. Each of “Ohio Magazine’s” Best Hometowns will be featured in the November, January and July issues, showing readers unique places to visit and ways to enjoy each location. Myers said “Ohio Magazine” is published by Great Lakes Publishing which also publishes an Ohio travel guide and “Sip,” a magazine featuring Ohio wineries. “They are right here in Ohio and are looking out for the best in the state,” she said. “They are good people to work with and are positive. We have to focus on the positives so we can continue to grow and beautify our community.” For more on “Ohio Magazine” visit ohiomagazine.com. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Long-time auto tech teachers retire COSHOCTON - After 31 and 30 years as the Coshocton County Career Center’s Auto Technology instructors, Dennis Rine and Randy Orsborn entered into retirement at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. “That’s 61 years of experience in the classroom, plus all the experience that they brought from the automotive industry, gone” said Eddie Dovenbarger, principal. “You’re not going to just replace that overnight.” John Large, a former student of the two men with 25 years of field experience himself, is stepping up to the challenge. “I know they’re big shoes to fill, and I’ll be doing the job both of them had to do,” Large said. “I’m ready for the challenge.” The Auto Tech program has been part of the school since its opening in 1978. “I think Rine and Orsborn brought a lot to the plate,” Dovenbarger said. Auto Tech has been the only two teacher program kept at the school after state academic

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON requirements eventually phased out the other two teacher programs through the years. “As the state added requirements we reduced the amount of career-tech time,” Dovenbarger said. “Most other schools started transitioning to one teacher programs through retirement and attrition. We were fortunate that we were able to sustain a two teacher Auto Tech program because of the large number of enrollment.” Although not the largest enrolled program today, Auto Tech remains very popular. Large wanted to teach for a living since coaching a youth basketball program about three years ago. “I thought it was pretty neat working with the kids and watching the little light bulb go off in their heads when they learned something new,” Large said. “It was a great feeling for me.” Large remembers Rine and Orsborn’s philosophy in the classroom when it came to students. “It’s something that I have remembered and that’s always stuck with me,” Large said. “If you’ve got kids that really want to learn a lot you teach them as much as you can while you’ve got them there.” Large looks to replicate a lot of Rine and Orsborn’s same philosophies and procedures in the classroom, with some modifications. “He [Large] has a wide variety of background/training but has never been a high school teacher,” Dovenbarger said. “Obviously, he has a wealth of knowledge in the field, but it’s going to be a transition for him - getting into the mindset of teaching and working with teenagers as opposed to the adult population in the working world.”

SEPTEMBER 8TH, 1955 Three men who attempted to break out of the Coshocton County jail were arraigned today. Harley Francis Brush, Robert Clyde Taylor, and Randolph Stiltner were the three wannabee escape artists. Bruch was charged on two different counts, one being the passing of a hacksaw through a jail window and two being the passing of alcohol to Taylor and Stiltner through the same window. Brush is being placed under a $500 bond and as for Taylor and Stiltner; they are being placed under a $200 bond which will be added to the $1,000 bond that they received for their previous breaking and entering offense. The trio’s bumbling escape plot was quickly foiled when Sheriff Gilbert Kempf noticed saw marks on the bars of the jail’s rear windows.

Of course we talk about things related to the canal era, but we also get to tell people about the hot air balloons, fireworks, fall foliage tour, the fair, candlelighting and much more. Meiser is glad to see these contests continue and encourages people to participate. “It’s important for the royalty to continue because it does so many good things for the girls in it,” she said. “Many people my age are afraid to speak in public, but not me because the Canal contests have had me doing it since I was really little. Also, I want to see the royalty keep going so kids who aren’t even born yet can have an experience like mine. My mom was Canal Princess and Canal Queen and my sister was junior queen and princess. She and I both want to run for queen someday and we also hope that it will be around so our little girls can do the same thing in the future.”

of the events we have coming up is Fourth grade Ag day. It’s a great awareness event for all of the fourth graders around Coshocton County.” “We were really involved in First Farm Friday which was a tremendous event just a few weeks ago in town. Community outreach is one of the biggest things we try to do, we try to involve all of our members as well as the nonfarming community to try and let them know where their food comes from and that we share this community together.” Whinnery said when it comes to being a member of the Farm Bureau, “First and foremost, the Farm Bureau is a lobbying organization. And the only way to have your voice really heard is to be active and be members of the organization that can then take that voice on to the next level whether it is at county, state or even federal. I had the opportunity this past March to spend time in Washington D.C. and take direct questions from our county to our legislators.” When asked about agriculture in today’s world, he said, “Whether people know it or not, agriculture is the number one industry in Coshocton County as well as every other county in the state and just about every other county in every state in the United States. So it really is the driving force behind our economy and it’s where our food comes from.” “If things go the way we hope they do tonight there will be some new classes of members available for Coshocton County Farm Bureau so people that aren’t necessarily in the farming community but want to support the agricultural community that they live in can get involved. We encourage people to visit our website and see how they can get involved.” Several awards were presented during the evening including a Friend of Agriculture Award to Deb Bigelow of Coshocton Soil & Water Conservation District and Sally Ellis of Pearl Valley Cheese. Chili Crossroads Bible Church opens learning center FRESNO - Chili Crossroads Bible Church is pleased to offer a new service to the community. The Chili Learning Center opened this month at the church and provides private tutoring with a certified instructor. “When our daughter was in third grade in Chicago, Ill. she would start a book and work really hard at reading it, but she’d get an eighth of the way through and stop,” said Pastor Neal Dearyan. “We had books all over our house with bookmarkers where she had stopped. Reading was really hard for her, but people at the private school she went to identified the symptoms of dyslexia.” The couple’s daughter, who is now 18, was assisted through the Barton Reading & Spelling System. “It took our daughter about 18 months, but the amount of time needed depends on the person,” Neal said. “It’s so worth it though. She really is a different person in so many ways and is more confident with reading.” One of her tutors from Chicago has relocated

to Ohio to offer the program to children of all ages and adults at the church’s learning center. “One in five children has dyslexia,” Neal said. “That’s 20 percent of the population and reading is so fundamental to so many different things in life. This program will enable them to be able to think in letters and words where right now they can’t. You and I see letters where they see pictures and things in reverse and that takes a lot of extra energy. I’m not an expert though. I’m just a parent with a child with dyslexia who was helped and I want to help others. From what I understand the earlier you catch it the better, but you never stop having dyslexia.” To make an appointment, call 740-610-0828 or visit www.chililearning.org. The church is located at 29445 C.R. 10. “The approach we are going to take is to celebrate what they have and offer to go on a journey with them to build new wiring in their brain to make things easier,” Neal said. Organization Director Kari Burkey, who is responsible for five counties, challenged everyone to “Get engaged with your elected officials, get engaged and share your story on social media; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or a blog. Get engaged in your community and organizations.” Burkey said, “This is our end of year event where we recognize all of the volunteers who do a lot to make our events and programs happen. We know that we have a lot of good involvement and we appreciate everyone who helps out with those and it’s just nice to recognize them and get all of the members together for the final meeting. I love working with the volunteers. It’s very rewarding to be able to recognize them and let the membership appreciate all of the hard work and effort that they put in.” All proposals brought before the members were approved on the county, state and national levels. President Jesse Whinnery concluded the evening by telling the members that, “The Farm Bureau is what we make it.” MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Coshocton Footlight Players plan upcoming season COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Footlight Players are pleased to announce Season 67, “A Season of Love and Laughter,” to be performed at Triple Locks Theater, located at 685 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton, OH. The inaugural play of the season is “Love Letters”, written by A.R. Gurney and directed by Susan Metz. In “Love Letters”, Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards and continues through the following 50 years. The letters exchanged and shared with the audience chronical their lives, the joys, the sorrows, the complexities, in the ever-changing kaleidoscope of life. Audiences will be treated to the rare privilege of experiencing the talents of the legendary Bettsy and Jim Gauerke on stage together in these beloved roles as we celebrate and pay tribute to Bettsy and Jim’s 60 years of involvement with Footlight Players. Performance dates are Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 at 8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale for “Love Letters” on Sept. 28 for members and Sept. 29 to the general public. The holiday season offering, “Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas”, is a collection of 15 holiday stories from the international best-selling author of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”, Robert Fulghum. The stories have been crafted into an engaging evening of storytelling and song. This charming show takes a funny, heartwarming and often poignant look at the struggle to find the spirit of the holidays amid the avalanche of commercialism, stress and chaos that crashes down every December. Directed by Susan Metz, “Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas”, will be performed on the Triple Locks Theater stage on Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19 at 8 p.m. Auditions for “Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas” will be Sunday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Triple Locks Theater. The cast is comprised of three men and two women ages 18 and up.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON The spring play, “Everybody Loves Opal”, depicts the comedic tale of Opal Kronkie, a recluse, who lives in a tumbledown house at the edge of the municipal dump. The general disarray of her establishment is aggravated by the fact that Opal collects things. Anything that can fit in her little red wagon goes home with her. Opal is an optimist and treats all with unfailing kindness and has an abiding faith in the goodness of human nature. Into her strange world enters, Gloria, Bradford and Solomon, a band of misfits and thieves. They decide Opal is the answer to their shattered finances and embark upon a number of elaborate schemes involving insurance and a variety of accidents. Despite their best attempts to turn the tides, Opal radiates kindness, affection and, strangely enough, gratitude. Director, Nathan Mayse will be conducting auditions for a cast of one woman age 20s-30s,one woman age 50s-70s, one man ages 20s-30s, and three men ages 30s-70s on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016 at 2 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 at 7 p.m. Performance dates for “Everybody Loves Opal” are March 3,4,10,11,17,18 at 8 p.m. To round out the season with laughter is “Incorruptible”, directed by Susan Gordon. Set in Priseaux, France, c. 1250 A.D., this comedy of the Dark Ages will delight modern audiences, as a group of destitute monks take a lesson from a larcenous one-eyed minstrel, who teaches them an outrageous new way to pay old debts. According to the American Theater, this show is, “A lightning-fast farce, rich in both verbal and physical humor.” Auditions will be March 20 at 2 p.m. and March 21 at 7 p.m. for a cast of three women (one 20s, one 40s, one 50+) and five men of various ages. The character of Jack must sing a little, dance a little, juggle and do magic tricks. The young woman must sing a little and dance a little. “Incorruptible” will be presented at Triple Locks Theater on May 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $7 for students. The Season Pass membership rate of $40 for adults and $25 for students provides a cost savings off the regular price of admission and provides members the opportunity to make reservations in advance of the general public. Season memberships are available now at www.footlightplayers.com.

The tour is sponsored by ResponsibleOhio, the organization promoting Issue 3, which if passed by voters on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, will legalize medical marijuana and personal use marijuana for adults over 21. “For years and years prohibition of marijuana in Ohio has failed and each year around $100 million is spent trying to enforce it,” Phillippi said. “This issue will provide tax revenue for

The marijuana industry in Ohio will create ample opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment, with around 10,000 new, wellpaying jobs projected statewide. FRESNO - Alright, close up the swimming pool, box up the flip flops and sunscreen, put away the white slacks...summer will be officially over this Labor Day weekend. Somehow, I feel as if summer never really fully arrived this year. It just seems unbelievable that Labor Day and the month of September are upon us, not to mention that there are only eight Saturdays left until the last Fresno Market, amazing. Fortunately for all there is still a wonderful amount and variety of fabulous “farm to table” freshness to select from in downtown Fresno. Our vendors have and continue to do a stand up job of bringing the farm to our tables each and every week. I just want to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone that has contributed to the market’s overwhelming success this season. A job well done! And that is what Labor Day is all about, taking time to thank and appreciate the working force, those that supply, produce and keep this great country of ours moving, growing and going in the right direction. So when you are

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON ready to celebrate this weekend, make the Fresno Farmers’ Market your first stop shopping spot (say that three times fast) for all your Labor Day picnic and party needs. There really is something for everyone to be discovered. But, I still have never totally figured out the whole “no white” after Labor Day thing? Anyway, come visit us and bring the “farm to your picnic table” this weekend. Here is a colorful and simple recipe to make ahead of time that is sure to be a hit at any picnic. Picnic Slaw 1 med head cabbage shredded 1 large carrot shredded 1 green and 1 sweet red pepper julienned 1 medium purple onion thinly sliced 1/3 cup green onions chopped 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley Dressing 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup mayo 1/3 cup sugar 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tbsp. red wine vinegar 1/2 tsp. celery seed salt & pepper to taste Combine all veggies in a large bowl, toss with dressing.
