The five seniors are experienced players and I expect them to have a big impact every game. They are the leaders on the team and an extension of the coaching staff on the field. Last year’s record: 9-7-3 Head Coach: Brian Dunlap Assistant Head Coach: Brandon Matz PLACE TIME Assistant Coach: Tony Jones A 5:00pm Key returning players and newcomers: This year’s squad has six H 1:00pm seniors, three of whom will be four-year letter winners and provide a lot of leadership as well as experience. Senior captain Conner Roahrig will start H 5:00pm in the midfield and is the team leading returning scorer and be supported A 7:00pm offensively by Austin Wheeler who is returning from injury and Brice H 5:00pm George also in the midfield. Ben Batchelor will return in a new role as H 5:00pm striker. He along with fellow junior Jake Ramsey will provide offensive depth along with energetic freshman Tanner Moats. Speedy senior captain H 1:00pm Alex McPeak will man the center of the defense. He will be flanked by A 6:00pm junior David Edmunds, senior Seth Casey and fiery freshman Austin H 5:00pm Guthrie on the back line. Freshman Kameron Brown is manning the goal A 11:00am this season. Sophomores Colin Shaw and Braeden Wheeler will add depth as well as newcomers Hunter Haas and Petr Skalny. This year’s squad has A 6:00pm 11 incoming freshman. We are thankful they will provide a foundation for H 1:00pm the future. H 5:00pm Overall expectations or goals for the season: Our team this season A 4:30pm will look to build upon an outstanding finish to last season in which after starting slow, finished strong returning to the district title match losing to A 6:00pm Dover in overtime. We have been fortunate to be in the district finals each A 7:00pm of the last six years, winning five of those. League as well as district goals are high on our list. We will have to continue to stay healthy and fit to reach our goals, but I believe we can achieve great things.

BY LIFETOUCH SCHOOL STUDIOS INC. Director: Barry Hardesty Assistant Director: Caroline Heading Color Guard Advisor: Teresa Ott Percussion Instructor: Justin Howell Number of years appearing at state competition and how placed last year: Coshocton has qualified for State Marching Band Finals 14 times. Last time we qualified for state was 2011. Number of students in band: 43 Theme for this year’s show and why it was selected: This year’s competition show is “Legends of the Underground Railroad.” These are songs that are well known that have had some historical or legendary connection with the Underground Railroad. The songs are: “Go Down Moses,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Follow The Drinking Gourd,” “Wade in the

Water,” and “Oh, Freedom.” It’s also interesting to me that four main “roads” of the Underground Railroad converged in Coshocton County. The main person responsible for these operations around Coshocton was a well respected AfricanAmerican named Prior Foster and there seemed to be many others involved. Overall strengths: The horn line seems stronger this year....especially the trombones. The show opens with a trombone duet by Mariah Kittell and Skip Hardesty. Competitions you are most looking forward to: I always look forward to the late season competitions...River View and Meadowbrook (Oct. 19) and New Philadelphia (Oct 26). That’s when we see how much progress we have made as performers.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON Overall expectations or goals for the season: Expectations and goals...music first...continued improvement in tone/sound quality, especially from the younger students. Building chops in the drumline...there are two rookies in the line, but they are all new to the position they are filling this year. Visually continue to work on posture and carriage and doing everything with increased uniformity and precision.

Last year’s record: 0-16 Head Coach: Judd Bone Assistant coaches: Casey Claxon and Keith Matz Statistician: Sydney Bone Key returning players: Our key returning players will be Allyssa Grove, Mallory Simmons, Karrie Bluck, Kristen Milligan, Breann Asbury and Courtney Elliott; these ladies will be the heartbeat of our team and provide the leadership and work ethic that we will need to develop our younger players. Key newcomers: Rachel Simpson, Hope Asbury and Alex Incarnato will play important roles this year as freshman. These girls are showing tremendous improvements with every practice and are expected to be key players as our season progresses. Juniors Abby Powers, Emily Kobel, Colleen Schwartz, Megan Cox, freshman Emily Bookless, sophomore Bree Lavigne and senior Makaya Giles, will also have a huge impact on the field as midfielders. Overall strengths: We are a small team this year and every player is important, our substitutes know the importance of their role and are giving us quality minutes when called upon. Key games for the season: Our key games for the season will be all of them. We have to get that first win under our belt to gain the confidence and trust in our ability to be successful. Overall expectations or goals for the season: We expect to be at least .500 on our season this year. Last year we were faced with the task of trying to rebuild, after losing so many seniors from the class of 2015. We still have a lot of work to do; we are restructuring our offense to become more of an offensive minded team. In the past we have relied on our defense to keep us in close matches, this year I expect our offense to pick up the slack.

We will definitely be looking to both our 5’11” seniors, Laura Crawford and Allie Dobson, to lead our offensive attack across the net. Laura led the league in hitting percentage and had 416 kills. She is our team captain and an all around player who is also one of our best passers. Allie is an effective blocker and is getting stronger at the net every day. Also, senior Morgan McDorman will be our libero and possibly see some time setting. Morgan is a nice setter; however, she is such an asset defensively it is hard to take her out of the back row. Also returning for Ridgewood is Autumn Brown, 5’10” junior middle hitter; Eliza Haynes, 5’5” junior outside hitter/setter; Katie Leitz, junior defensive specialist; SEE MORE RWHS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ON PAGE 23

Away 8:00am Head Coach Varsity: Gwenna Neal Asst. Coach: Beth Beabout Away 10:00am Key returning runners: Only losing one senior girl last year brought Home 4:30pm back a great deal of strength. Bella Pendola (12) is coming on very strong. Away 9:00am She is driven to make some history for the girls by leading this team to places RV cross country girls have never been. Kelsey Strange (11) who is Away 9:00am coming back from a hip injury also has high expectations for herself and Away 8:30am her teammates. It is very difficult to have to sit on the sidelines and watch Away 9:00am as the season begins to unfold. She will be back, however, better than ever in the near future. Cassidy Bookless (10) is trying to find her distance legs Away 10:00am and is driven to continue to improve each week. Sarah Eick (11) also is determined to keep her spot on the varsity seven and is running very well. Sarah is a solid runner. Maddie Beach (11) will be an important factor. Last year’s record: Last year was a historical one for RV Cross Country. The boys were ECOL champs two years in a row, back to back district champs, and had a team state berth. Both Sawyer Away 9:00am and Lane as freshmen were right on the heels of my sixth and seventh Away 9:00am guys and are coming along this year to fill some big shoes. Both of these Away 8:30am young men have developed over the past year and are very competitive by nature. They bring strength to the team as a whole by their “no fear/no Away 9:00am excuses” attitudes. Sawyer has dropped in right behind Michael as number Away 10:00am two runner at this point while Lane is currently running as number four man. Caleb is a senior and has really come on this past year. Last year’s improvement was noted and this year exponentially. While currently he is running number five slot, I expect some of the placements to change from week to week. They have run together now for many years. They know that this year is the year that it is time to go from “pretty good” to “Very Good.” Every year the bar has been raised and this year it is time to show up for the season in full force. Key races for the season: Running competitive meets is important. Tournament time separates the men from the boys so to speak and the ability to stand up to the intense pressure and aggressiveness of the race will make all of the difference. Tiffin and Boardman are race situations that might most represent a tournament start line in both competition and aggressive racing. These are races that have 400 plus runners on the line. It is definitely a charged atmosphere. Running isn’t like other sports in which a skill can be kept at a particular level either by practice or talent. River View Boys Cross Country Jordan’s desire and dedication to his running has made him very valuable. I am watching closely to see how he continues to develop. Anything might happen. Colt Stottlemire is also a returner that is key to the team’s success. Colt is a leader by example and helps create a sense of stability within the team dynamics. Key newcomers: After graduating nine boys last year, I knew it would feel thinner, however, I am pleased that Austin Hill has opted to run with us this year. There is a training progression which must be carefully crafted in order for the runner to be in their best physical condition at the right time. Planning ahead is key and timing is crucial for the various types of workouts that we do. Also, training them to be tough mentally is much of it. You can’t run cross country and expect to be in a comfort zone in a race. These lessons certainly transfer to other aspects of life... mental toughness can make someone decide to be successful in whatever they may choose to do. Overall expectations or goals for the season: I have very high expectations. I think that both teams have the potential to develop and go all the way. However, we are going to have to work for everything we get. Both teams know that the mixture of work ethic, the desire, training smart, and adopting the “no fear/no excuses” attitude is what will get them to their goals. I never want them to be satisfied. Being a runner is not really a sport, it is a lifestyle. is trained and is learning the finesse of racing. I believe that Austin is going to play a very important role both on the course and off. He fits in well with this group of boys. These guys are all about “team.” Freshman Nick Grashel also has made his mark coming into the number seven slot and ran well in his first HS meet at National Trail. The HS atmosphere is much different than JH. Sometimes it can be difficult to transition both mentally as well as physically. Racing a 5K is a different animal than the two mile. Talon Edgell is another freshman to watch and then RV newcomer senior David Birkbeck has joined us. David ran in Nebraska but he is more than surprised at the differences in cross country culture. I am very interested to see what some solid training and competitive races will do for him throughout the season. I anticipate that he will improve beyond his own expectations. Overall strengths: This boys’ team works together well. They spend a great deal of time together on and off the course. This factor will be crucial come tournament time. Despite their young ages, this is a competitive group. I think that in October, it will be surprising to some teams who are possibly counting us out b/c we graduated so many last year. CeCe and Morgan’s positive attitudes keep the team on an even keel. Key newcomers: Freshmen Rachel Allen and Josie Morris are going to make running the varsity squad somewhat more challenging for some of the upper classmen. I love how they all encourage one another. Your teammate is a benchmark, not competition. Pushing one another harder makes us better as a whole. I also will not count out freshman Andrea Troyer. She struggled with a stress fracture in JH and is really working to come back from that. Newcomer Macy Hill, I believe will be a player, in the next six weeks or so. Brand new to any type of training or consistent and focused racing, I can see so much potential here. She wants to contribute to the team outcome and I believe that she will. Right-handed players will keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance. Identify your weaknesses: As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work. Fix your alignment: Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance. Use your torso for power: The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same spine angle and posture on the downswing. Use the wind: Not every golf game will be played in perfect weather. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between. Choose the right clubs: There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. How to cope with an athletic injury

As any professional athlete can attest, even the most athletic and physically fit individuals can suffer an injury. Professional athletes typically have highly trained medical personnel at their disposal as they recover from injury, but men and women who don’t draw a paycheck for their athletic exploits have no such luxury, making it far more difficult to recover from and cope with injury. Each individual body responds to injury in different ways. For example, one person may heal from a hamstring injury in as little as a few weeks, while others must endure a healing process that lasts several months. But no matter how different athletes’ bodies may be, there are coping mechanisms every athlete can employ to help deal with the mental toll that injuries can take. Stay involved: Athletes who train heavily and devote much of their free time to pursuing their sport of choice may feel as though their world has come crashing down when they suffer an injury. But even if you cannot compete, you can still stay involved in your sport. If you are physically capable, offer to volunteer at

sanctioned events, which can help you maintain a connection with your sport and keep abreast of the happenings within that community. If your injury is so limiting that active volunteering is nearly impossible, you can still attend events and then blog about them afterward. The important thing is to recognize that, while an injury may prevent you from competing, you can still find other ways to stay involved. Set realistic recovery goals: Many athletes begin physical therapy or their rehabilitation processes with a gung-ho attitude, insisting they will return from injury stronger than they were before. While that’s a great attitude, it’s important that athletes temper their enthusiasm for recovery with a dose of reality. Recovery is not overnight, and even the most elite athletes, many of whom are accustomed to their bodies responding in the way they want them to respond, can be discouraged if they enter the rehabilitation process with unrealistic expectations. Work with your physical therapist, physician or trainer to establish realistic recovery goals, using your enthusiasm to meet your short and long-term recovery goals. Be flexible when setting your

How to adjust to a healthier diet

Change often requires an adjustment period. Men and women who switch jobs may need a few weeks before they feel fully comfortable in a new office, while students changing schools may also need some time to adapt to their new surroundings. An adjustment period is also common when people decide to adopt healthier diets. Diet is often habit-forming, and men and women will need some time to adjust as they kick some bad dietary habits in favor of healthier fare. The following are some simple ways to make that adjustment period a little easier to swallow. Go slowly: Some people are capable of going cold turkey when adjusting to a new diet, while others must take a more gradual approach. Unless a health condition that requires immediate change is driving your dietary changes, take things slowly so your body acclimates to its new diet over time. Such an approach may make your efforts more successful over the long haul than making more sudden, drastic changes. For example, suddenly cutting your daily calorie intake in half may force you into old, unhealthy habits when hunger pangs inevitably arise. But

gradually reducing your caloric intake over time may make it easier for your body to adjust, decreasing the likelihood that you will relapse into bad habits. Explain your motivation to loved ones: Adults, especially married men and women and parents, may find adjusting to a new diet especially difficult unless their spouses and/or families are making similar adjustments. If you are the only member of your household who will be adjusting to a new diet, explain your efforts and motivation to your loved ones. Such an explanation will make them less likely to bring unhealthy foods into your home. In addition, your loved ones can prove an invaluable source of support as you make this big adjustment in your life. Embrace positive results, even if they are initially underwhelming: Just because you have adopted a new diet does not mean you will see immediate results. Fad diets meant to last just a few weeks may produce immediate results, but such results likely will not withstand the test of time, and you may even gain weight when you revert to some of your old eating habits. recovery goals, as you never know how your body will respond to treatment. Expect setbacks: Setbacks are an unfortunate reality of recovery for many athletes. Don’t allow yourself to become discouraged if a goal can’t be met because your body is simply not ready or needs to pause in its recovery process. A setback can be frustrating, but you can cope with setbacks by writing about them, be it on a blog or in a personal journal. Many athletes have found that writing down their feelings is an effective way to deal with the frustration of the recovery process. Keeping a journal or recovery blog can also help you cope with any future setbacks down the road, as you can look back and see what did or did not help you deal with past obstacles. Athletic injuries can be thorns in the sides of committed athletes, who may or may not know what to do with themselves when sidelined with significant injuries. But there are various ways for athletes to cope with injuries and make the recovery process less frustrating.

right diet will produce long-lasting results, but you must allow for some time before such diets lead to significant weight loss. In the meantime, place more emphasis on how you feel than the figure that shows up on your bathroom scale each morning. Upon adopting a healthier diet, you will start to notice how much better you feel than you felt when eating a diet filled with fatty, unhealthy foods. Remind yourself of this extra hop in your step as you continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle. Don’t give up: Your adjustment period will require some discipline, and there may be moments when you backslide into bad habits. If that happens, don’t allow it to derail all of the progress you have made since switching to a healthier diet. Just accept that you had a setback and resolve to do your best to avoid having another one. The sooner you get back on a healthier track, the better you will feel.
