Spectator admission and parking are free. Dave McVay is the event chairman. “Don McVay Sr. was an avid beagler and was respected by so many beaglers,” said Dave. “We will see hunters here from all over the country at this event since it has become one of the most prestigious events to win. In recent years we have had between 150 to over 200 dogs in the hunt. This year we expect over 1,000 people in attendance.” McVay says the hunt draws participants from across Ohio as well as from several states including - Louisiana, Virginia, New Mexico, Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi, and Iowa. Most of them stay in the Coshocton or Newcomerstown area. “The beaglers really like coming to Coshocton County,” McVay said. “With the UKC Nationals here each April, the beaglers have become very familiar with Coshocton and the running grounds that the Coshocton County Beagle Club have are some of the best in the country.” McVay explains that for the event the beagler participants will be organized into teams for this year’s event. “They are released into the field in areas of permission throughout the county,” he said. “The dogs are to hunt to find a rabbit without assistance from a handler. They are judged by how quickly they find a rabbit and once the rabbit is seen they are judged on how they cross an imaginary line drawn where the rabbit is seen. There are no guns

Some people just don’t know better and they just throw the flag in the trash. We need to educate ourselves on how to properly do this. It is so important that the kids see this. This is our heritage. Put on your running and walking shoes for good causes COSHOCTON – There are three opportunities this September to participate in local 5K events in Coshocton, all for a good cause. The second annual I’ve Got Your Six 5K and Memorial Hike to benefit the VALOR Clinic Foundation will be Saturday, Sept. 12 at Lake Park. Race day registration and packet pickup begins at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. Awards will be presented at 10:30 a.m. “The VALOR Clinic Foundation was established in 2010 to provide support to homeless or struggling veterans and to address the visible and invisible wounds of war,” said Julia Kysela. “All proceeds from this race will be directly donated to them to provide support for the repairs for their SGT Kevin Lannon Veterans Sanctuary in neighboring Fallsburg.” About 30 people came out for the race last year, but it was in March and the weather was not ideal. “We hoped by moving it to the fall we would have a better turn out and better weather,” said Kysela. “We were still able to raise just over $1,500.” This year, racers can register for $25 until Friday, Sept. 11 and the fee will be $30 on race day. If you do not want a t-shirt you can take $5 off the price. Registration and more information can be found at www.ivegotyour6k.org. After the race participants can enjoy traditional post
race food such as bagels, bananas, and water and there will be an awards ceremony. Coshocton County Job and Family Services will be having a Foster Care Fund Run on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Lake Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is $25 and registration the day of the race is $30. The first 100 participants will receive a free t-shirt. This race was first held in 2013 and proceeds from it help with a foster care college fund. “The funds may be used to help former foster children with incidental costs toward college,” said Mindy Fehrman, director of job and family services. “For example, if they need a gas voucher to come home for Christmas break or supplies for school. Most tuition, board and book costs are covered by colleges who cater to former foster youth.” There will be awards for winners in each age category/gender. For information on this race, contact Jen Fry at jennifer.fry@jfs.ohio.gov or 740-295-7557. “Many of us at JFS have started implementing better eating habits and exercise into our daily living habits,” Fehrman said. “We felt this would be a healthy way to raise funds. Some of us want to walk in the 5K for the very first time this year.” The first McWane Ductile Fun Run will be Sunday, Sept. 27 at Lake Park. Registration is

Contact Cathe Chodnoff at 740-291-1007 to pre-register or register at premierraces.com. T-shirts are guaranteed to all who pre-register. “We wanted to have an event in the community to get everyone out and make people aware of the benefits of walking and running,” said Chodnoff. “We’re hoping to have this every year so that it’s something that people can look forward to and set a goal for next year. Maybe they’ll walk this year, but set a goal to run next year, and that’s something they can train for.” All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army Food Pantry. “We wanted to give back to the Coshocton community,” said Chodnoff. “At this time of the year, donations to food pantries are really scarce.” At the end of the 5K, there will be an awards program with the top male and female awarded in each age group. There will also be healthy snacks and water available.

WEST LAFAYETTE – On the morning of Sept. 11, 1950, the late Victor Crouso, a West Lafayette resident who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in Dennison, was on his way to work when he noticed a train sitting on the tracks near West Lafayette. “It happened on his 21st birthday,” said Curt Crouso, Victor’s son. “He was on his way to work when he saw a train sitting on the tracks and he saw the other train coming toward it. He didn’t think anything of it because there used to be two train tracks in West Lafayette and he thought the train was on the other track.” By the time Victor got to work, he learned the devastating news. Just moments after he had passed the scene, the trains collided, killing 33 men. The train had stopped in the early morning on Sept. 11 in West Lafayette to fix a broken air hose, and was carrying men from Wilkes-Barre, Pa to a training camp in Indiana. Unbeknownst to the troop train, The Spirit of St. Louis was coming behind her at a dangerous 75 mph. When the workers aboard the troop train spotted The Spirit of St. Louis, they tried to make contact via flares to let the other train know to stop, but all was in vain. When the engineer finally spotted the troop train at rest on the tracks, he tried to stop, but was too late. The Spirit hit the troop train at a deadly speed of 55 mph. What followed was the worst tragedy the community of West Lafayette had ever experienced. In April of 1989, Victor Crouso, who had nearly witnessed the accident, came to Mayor Jack Patterson and asked if there could be a memorial built in memory of the 33 men who died on that early September morning of 1950. A committee of five West Lafayette residents consisting of Ed Chapdelaine, Jack Patterson, Jewell Guinther, Duke Young, and Jim Shivers was formed and it was decided that the grassy
knoll by the tracks was the best place for the monument. The land was added to the village’s lease for this purpose and ideas began to form on how the monument should look. Just as they did on that horrible morning in 1950, the village of West Lafayette came together and funded the $8,000 to create the memorial. This also included a donation from the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. “We got the idea for the shape of the monument from military monuments in cemeteries,” said Mayor Jack Patterson. “We also wanted it to look similar in shape to the Washington Monument.” The monument is made from Pennsylvania black granite and was sent to South Carolina for the engraving. The stone was designed by Free Funeral Home and is sponsored by West Lafayette American Legion 466 and the Vietnam Veterans of America 151. “We used Pennsylvania black granite as a tribute to those boys who were killed from Pennsylvania,” said Patterson. While digging the foundation for the monument, the crew came across cross ties from the original side track. Some of the side track has been left exposed for people to see. This is a chilling reminder to those who remember that day as the funeral train rested on the side track as it loaded the 33 bodies of the men who had died. “They backed the funeral train onto the side track,” said Patterson. “They stored the 33 bodies in a building across the street, and they brought them out one by one and put them on the funeral train. This memorial sits right where the funeral train sat.” Because the monument was not finished in time for the 40th anniversary, the dedication of the monument was in November of 1990. In attendance was MG (retired) Frank Townend, engineer of the troop train who was one of the
guest speakers. Shortly before the ceremony, guests and residents turned their heads skyward to witness a flyover by the Air National Guard. “The West Lafayette residents were proud of our efforts and being recognized of how we took care of the ones who could be saved and also how we took care of the ones who could not be saved,” said Patterson. A year after the dedication, a pedestal telling what happened at the site was dedicated. The site also features a replica of a 105 mm Howitzer cannon, which Coshocton Trucking brought back from Iowa at no cost, a sample of shell casings from Jones Metal, a bench donated by the Society of the 28th Division in Pennsylvania, and two trees. One tree is planted in memory of John Terry who worked at WTNS and who hooked up connections between West Lafayette and Wilkes-Barre so survivors could get in contact with family members. Later, WTNS was commemorated by the mayor of Wilkes-Barre for their coverage of the accident. The other tree is planted in memory of Al Williams, a survivor of the troop train wreck who used to come to all the memorial services in West Lafayette and who passed away in 2006. The 50th anniversary commemoration was held on Aug. 26, 2000. This ceremony was very meaningful and as the ceremony was underway, a train whistle blew in the distance and soon, a steam engine with cars similar to the ones carrying members of the 109th Field Artillery Battalion that day drove up and stopped at the memorial. “That part of the program was very touching,” said Patterson. “There were people standing in awe, some were crying, it was just very moving.” There were also 33 crosses placed on the grounds and the Coshocton Armory donated 33 blank dog tags to be used. “During a part of the memorial service, a Boy Scout member came over to the crosses and placed a dog tag around each cross as the names of the deceased were being read,” said Patterson. This year, the 65th anniversary of the troop train will be commemorated in a ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at the memorial site in West Lafayette. Col. John Brant will be the main speaker and guest speaker will be Rep. Bill Hayes. The troop train has been featured in a number of documentaries. Jerry Heller from Pennsylvania did a documentary of the tragedy which won Best Television Documentary in the PA Association of Broadcasting. “The Keystone” also had an issue on the troop train in 1988. It was also reported that after the wreck, $1,400 of claims were processed in Indiana with survivors of the accident. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

However, in the event of unusual financial difficulties the candidate may apply for tuition assistance by submitting a letter of explanation to the leadership board. “I’m looking at this celebration as a rejuvenation event to bring energy to leadership and the alumni council,” said Betsy Gosnell, executive director of Leadership Coshocton County. The next Leadership Coshocton County Alumni Council meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Uncorked in Roscoe Village. Socializing starts at 4:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 5 p.m. All alumni are welcome to attend the council meeting to help plan the event. Leadership Alumni Council planning celebration
‘Love Finds Judy Garland’ featured at Kent State Tuscarawas
N E W PHILADELPHIA - ‘Love Finds Judy Garland’ will be performed by Joan Ellison on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Kent State University at Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center in New Philadelphia. This is a cabaret performance where the audience sits on the stage with the performers. Dinner is included in the $45 ticket price. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center box office, online at www.kent.edu/tusc/pac or by calling 330-308-6400. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free parking is available for all shows. Michael Feinstein has praised Joan Ellison for her “vocal prowess...[and] organic grasp of
the classic songs” by, and Donald Rosenberg, of ‘The Plain Dealer’, described her as bringing “a keen blend of vocal splendor and verbal crispness to every musical moment” and “possess[ing] a crystalline voice that never stops” Ellison’s long-time immersion in the popular vocal styles of the 1920s to the 1960s includes transcribing more than 200 piano and vocal arrangements note-for-note from classic recordings. This intimate understanding of vintage musical and vocal styles brings distinct freshness, immediacy and authenticity to her interpretations of class American standards. This season, Ellison sang her ‘Judy Garland in Hollywood’ concert with the Lakeside Symphony under the baton of Robert Cronquist, and also performed with the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ‘Wizard of Oz’ film release. For the past several years, she has been performing the theatrical productions ‘Love Finds Judy Garland’ and ‘Gershwin On the Air’, for which she arranged

the music. Both shows received short runs at True North Cultural Arts Center this season. In July, Ellison released a new album, ‘Retrophonic Gershwin’, featuring a dozen songs from her show, ‘Gershwin On the Air’. Along with an ensemble of two singers and duopianists, the album is mixed by Grammy awardwinning engineer Robert Friedrich. Upcoming performances include ‘Judy Garland in Hollywood’ with the Wheaton Symphony, the premiere of the re-written ‘Love Finds Judy Garland’ including eight new arrangements in Cleveland before its Florida debut in February 2016, three summer concerts with the Cleveland Pops, and a return to the Lakeside Symphony as the soloist in a concert commemorating the end of World War II. Winter 2016 will find her playing the role of Judy Garland in ‘The Boy from Oz’, directed by Mark Danni, at TheatreZone in Naples, Florida. One of her past appearances was ‘Judy Garland Valentine’ with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic under Eric Benjamin. He commented, “To say ‘Joan lit up the stage’ is to use a cliché, but that’s why the phrase was coined to begin with. She did just that as she sang the Garland tunes with heartfelt spirit and a warm, vibrant sound - she is a gem! The audience fell in love at first sight and song.” Other past symphonic appearances have included the Cleveland Pops Orchestra with maestro Carl Topilow headlining their “Songwriting Giants of Broadway” concert; “The Music of Richard Rodgers” with the Erie Philharmonic; and a return engagement with the Erie Philharmonic with maestro Daniel Meyer for their series of Holiday Pops concerts. In 2005, she made her Severance Hall debut with the Cleveland Pops opposite Broadway Baritone William Michals, and has since sung a dozen times with the ensemble in repertoire ranging from ‘The King and I’ to ‘Wicked’. In addition to touring the country with ‘Love Finds Judy Garland’ and ‘Gershwin On the Air’, Ellison has trod the boards as Julie in ‘Carousel’,

A student internship provides a unique opportunity for qualified students to gain valuable professional experience and build career-specific skills at local business and industry, while at the same time contributing directly to the goals of the company or organization. We are excited to provide this service to the community.” Internships are developed to assist employers in meeting organizational goals while also providing a mentored, career-related experience for the intern. Internships can occur during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. They can range from two months to more than six months, although the average internship lasts about a semester. While some internships are full-time, others range from 10 to 30 hours per week. An internship experience can be paid, unpaid, for credit, not for credit or any combination of these. Details about the number of hours worked, length of internship, rate of pay and other specifics are usually negotiated between employers

They’re taking me into people’s homes. I’m the luckiest guy in America.” You could make the argument May already was among the luckiest, with a charmed career that’s equal parts sweat equity and choking the life out of every opportunity that came along. He fell in love with comedy after performing at a church conference at age 13, and winning unexpected rewards. He turned professional at 17 when he opened for Sam Kinison after winning a contest as a dual-enrollment student at the University of Arkansas. “He told me to move to Houston,” May said, “so I didn’t wait till graduation. I just left: ‘I’m going to Houston to do standup.’ And that was 25 years ago. It’s crazy.” Houston was a comedy Mecca at the time with seven clubs and a thriving, competitive
