RETIRING AMERICAN FLAGS Under rainy skies, members of Boy Scout Troop Pack 403 learned the proper way to dispose of worn American flags. The public was invited to view the process. Jim Barstow of the Veterans Service Office said he hopes to perform this ceremony on a regular basis to teach the public about proper flag disposal, and also to teach the youth in our county to respect the flag. After each flag undergoes a preparation process, it is then separated by its colors. First, the red stripes are burned, which signifies the blood shed by many Americans who defended her. Second, the white stripes are burned, which signifies the tears of the many Americans who have lost sons and daughters. Last, the blue field of stars is burned, which signifies God’s heaven. One veteran who attended the ceremony as a member of the Honor Guard was George Leach, a World War Two Veteran. “I have never seen this done before,” he said. “I’ve heard about it being done, but I’ve never actually seen it done. It’s interesting.” BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT

stations, as well as on the Ohio Channel for its unique topic. Her first book, “Geneva on the Lake: A History of Ohio’s First Resort,” published in 2012, has entered its second printing as of last summer. When not writing or teaching, Koile enjoys traveling throughout Ohio with her family. She is currently working on ideas for her next book. This year’s Writers Workshop will be held Oct. 3 at Frontier Power’s Community Room, 770 S. Second St. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with coffee and muffins. Cost is $10, payable at the door. No advance registration is required. Koile’s topic is “The Secret to Writing: One Talent Every Writer Has and Should Use.” A question and answer period will follow her presentation. Later, attendees will be given time to write something, perhaps inspired by the nonfiction writer/speaker. Koile will bring her three books to the Writers Workshop, to autograph and sell. Lunch is on your own. It can be brown bagged or bought at Whit’s next door, or at one of several nearby restaurants. After lunch, attendees will choose between four different break-out sessions. Koile will lead one session, titled “A Whole New Perspective on Non-Fiction Writing.” Crystal Meinstein, a Write-On Writers Guild member, will lead

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON a session on fiction writing. Holli Rainwater of the Coshocton Public Library and a writer of Japanese-inspired Haiku poetry will lead a session titled “A Haiku Frame of Mind.” The fourth choice, “Writing your Memoirs,” will be led by Cristie Merce, also a member of the WriteOn Writers Guild, and a professional storyteller. These sessions will begin with a presenter, but will have time for individual writing in that subject area. There will be an open mic time at 2 p.m., followed by open discussion where attendees share anything pertinent to writing. At approximately 3:30 p.m., there will be a wrapup and door prizes. Another member of the Write-On Writers Guild, Mary Ann Sherman, is pleased that this year’s Writers Workshop will have time for networking and sharing. “If there’s a popular discussion, we won’t need to cut it off because of a tight schedule,” she said. COSHOCTON – Valspar Paint usually sells pretty well for Auer ACE Hardware, but recently the paint company did more than help local residents brighten up their homes. Valspar held a sales contest for three months and ACE won $630, which paint department employees Amy Taylor and Donavon Belt chose to donate to First Step Family Violence Intervention Services, Inc. and Dr. Jere Butcher and the Pleasant Valley Animal Clinic. “We wanted it to go to someone who could use it,” said Belt. They also gave First Step about $2,000 worth of brand new clothing. “We were selling Carhartt clothing for men, women and children, but as the paint department grew it kind of got pushed aside,” Taylor said. “The men’s and women’s clothing went, but I had the children’s stuff stashed away. Donavon and I talked and we thought it would be good to give to families in need. There is toddler to teen summer and winter clothing for boys and girls.” Vicki Laudick, director of First Step, said the money will help with costs at their domestic violence shelter and the clothes also will help the families they serve. “People who come to our shelter often come with nothing so it will be nice for them to have

COSHOCTON – Fourth grade students from all county schools met at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds on Thursday, Sept. 10 for a day of learning and fun. Thirteen stations set up around the south side of the fairgrounds taught students about programs offered at OSU Extension with a focus on 4-H, poultry, pumpkins, bees, grains, greenhouses, soil and water, sheep, farm safety, beef, dairy, and swine. “The purpose of this day is to teach kids all about agriculture,” said Kari Burkey, organization director of Ohio Farm Bureau. FRESNO - Cool mornings, cozy sweater evenings, hot mugs of apple cider, warming comfort food, crackling fires and the “farm to table” freshness of the Fresno Farmers’ Market. Yep, I love fall! Nothing is more satisfying than bringing home that homegrown and homemade goodness, other than eating it of course. There is just something about this time of year that is settling to ones soul. Yes, I know that in less than 60 days there is always the possibility of having snow on the ground. But, for now let’s concentrate on the positive. With approximately only six weeks of the Fresno Market left, there is still plenty of time to gather up and squirrel away some of that vary “farm to table” freshness that you no doubt will appreciate when the snow really does fly. Vine ripe tomatoes for salsa and juice, Clark’s Orchard honey crisp apples for pies and applesauce, green peppers for stuffing, little red potatoes for smashing and Karen’s homemade noodles for over top of those little taters. There is a banquet of possibilities just waiting to be discovered here in downtown Fresno. One thing is for certain, when you do visit us here at the market, it only takes one look to see the quality and dedication that our bakers, growers, producers and crafters have in the items they so thoughtfully bring to share with us at market. From the way Bill and John so professionally arrange and display their locally grown produce, to the extra care Shelia and Rhoda give to packaging their home baked sweets. It is easy to see the pride and craftsmanship that goes into every detail of how our vendors want to present this “farm to table” experience to you our loyal market shoppers. So, this Saturday morning make it a point to get up and come enjoy all that

SEPTEMBER 21, 1955 It was announced that the construction of the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital would begin within the next month and be completed in March of 1957. Architect Dan Carmichael, who is in charge of studying all bids for the new hospital, made the announcement last Tuesday. Secretary of the board of Trustees W.B. Sauer also announced that the hospital would cost approximately $1,800,000 to construct. SEPTEMBER 17TH, 1965 Students at Ridgewood High School formed the school’s first Varsity Club. The club is intended to create interest in athletics and offer athletes who have earned their varsity letter a place to have fun and interact with others. The Varsity Club’s other function is to aid in raising money to assist the athletic program and other school organizations. Officers for the Varsity Club are Regis shivers, sergeant of arms; Phil Duren, secretary; Tom Hess, vice-president; Harold Tyson, treasurer; Randy Geese, president; and Dean Holder, sergeant. SEPTEMBER 19TH, 1975 Coshocton county residents were urged to not be alarmed if they discover a foreign substance in their water. An employee for the city waterworks exclaimed that residents have nothing to worry about and that the reason for this occurrence is due to fire hydrants around the city being flushed. Due to this, calcium deposits within the water lined can often loosen, which may cause a slight water discoloration. Firemen claim that the flushing of these hydrants is a necessary measure but offer their sincerest apologies for any inconvenience it may cause.

SEPTEMBER 22ND, 1985 Coshocton native Larry J. Kobel is a candidate for the second ward City Council seat. Kobel is employed at J.C. Penney where he works as an assistant merchandiser. Kobel is also a graduate of both Coshocton High School and the Ohio State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Kobel is experienced when it comes to politics as he has volunteered for the campaigns of Joe Grady for the 29th District Senate seat and Dennis Grady for clerk of Canton Municipal Court. Larry was also a member of the Ohio State University student government program.

COSHOCTON – The fact that Coshocton has a Christian school confirmed Pastor Rod Uhlig’s move here 10 years ago. Since then he has been active at Coshocton Christian School in a number of ways. Uhlig’s daughters attend the school, he currently volunteers to teach a Bible class and he served nine years on the school board. He recently stepped down from the board and was honored at the start of the school year for the time he served. “I have a strong belief in Christian education and within the first year of my oldest going here an opening came up on the board,” Uhlig said. “I was nominated for it and took the position. I’ve enjoyed the unity (of the board) and the common mindset we have of working toward the goal of a Christian education focused on a Christ centered world view.” He is very proud of the direction the school has moved in over the last couple of years. “We have increased stability and that’s very encouraging,” Uhlig said. “A Christian school is funded by tuition parents pay so we can’t match

BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT WEST LAFAYETTE – Residents of West Lafayette and the surrounding areas came together on Sunday, Sept. 13 to remember the 33 men who were killed in the Troop Train wreck on Sept. 11, 1950. The memorial service began with the playing of the National Anthem by members of the Ridgewood High School band and a cannon was fired from across the tracks. Col. John Brant was the main speaker and said a few words about what he discovered when researching the accident. “What I found most amazing by the accident was how your community responded to the accident,” he said. “It was just amazing, the outpouring of what you people did. I think there should be a memorial to the people in this community as well as the ones who died. I really would like to thank you for all you did for the National Guard boys in Pennsylvania.” Mayor Jack Patterson gave a brief history of the founding of the Troop Train Memorial and then, the 33 names were read by three members of the original committee: Jewell Guinther, Duke Young, and Jim Shivers. “The hell of war visited Coshocton County on Sept. 11, 1950,” said guest speaker Rep. Bill Hayes. “When these things occur, we muster up the strength given through God alone to do what needs to be done.” The ceremony ended with a 21 gun salute, the firing of the cannon, and the playing of Taps.

The Don McVay Sr. Memorial Beagle Hunt sponsored by the Coshocton County Beagle Club and the McVay Family was held Sept. 1013, at Schumaker Farms. “I think one of the reasons so many people come is because of the raffle,” said Dave McVay, the event chairman. “People can run their dog and lose, but because of the raffle still go home a winner.” The hunt is held in memory of Dave’s father Don who was very active in beagle hunts and enjoyed giving back to the sport. “I was close to Don and enjoy coming,” said Matt Turner of Newark. He’s been a winner at the event before and at this year’s bench show walked away with first place in the registered division. “It was a lot of luck, but I also had her in pretty good shape and she’s a nice dog,” Turner said. “She’s actually my buddy’s dog who couldn’t be here, but I raised her and trained her.” Winning, however, isn’t the only reason he likes the event. “Look around here,” Turner said. “There are people of all ages – kids, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins – they are all here. This is a great sport. You get to see your buddies and run dogs. I love it all.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON - The Barefoot Mile Coshocton sponsored a Family Fun Day on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Himebaugh Lot. At 10 a.m., those gathered walked a mile around the park to raise awareness of human trafficking in the United States and around the world. In attendance was Dr. Jeff Brodsky who has been barefoot for five years. Brodsky said his decision to be barefoot started in Cambodia on July 19, 2010. He was in Cambodia trying to rescue girls involved in human trafficking, some as young as 4-years-old, when he saw children living in a garbage dump who were completely barefoot. “I went back to my room, took off my shoes, and made a commitment to be barefoot for one year so I could walk how these children walk every day,” he said. “After that year was up, I heard a small voice inside of my head that said, keep going.” Some at the Family Fun Day chose to walk the mile barefoot as well, even in the cold rain. BY BETH SCOTT WEST LAFAYETTE – Heidi Mason, a 1994 graduate of Ridgewood High School, has been writing all of her life. She has written short stories, poetry, children’s stories, and had some articles published in magazines, but recently, she has fulfilled one of her life-long dreams. Mason used to work as staff writer at The Advertiser, but took a break from her writing when she had a family. She then started doing family genealogy research and began writing about the interesting stories she found in her family tree. In February of this year, Mason decided MASON she wanted to write a novel. Only four months later in June, the rough draft of her novel was completed. She submitted her novel to five publishers, expecting to be rejected by all of them. She submitted her novel on Friday and by Tuesday, she received a contract in the mail. After three rounds of edits, her novel, “Investigating the Heart” was published by Solstice Publishing. “I was excited,” she said. “I was in a hurry to get it done and see it and feel it. The challenge of writing a novel is, can I do this and take these characters and do a full-on plot and make everything connect.” The storyline focuses on Emma McCoy, a single mother who owns a coffee shop. She’s had a bad experience with her first marriage and wants nothing to do with falling in love again. That’s when she meets Liam O’Reilly, an FBI agent who has a secret connection to her past that puts her in danger. “I was a reader from the time I was very young,” said Mason. “As I got older, that turned into a love of writing. I can express my feelings much more on paper than I can verbally.” She said that although her novel is a work of fiction, little bits and pieces of her life are reflected through the characters. “There are parts of it that are very much me,” she said. “If you write, it’s your story, it’s your take on life, and it’s your thoughts.” Mason will be at the Canal House in Tuscarawas on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. for a book release party. She will also be at the Coshocton Public Library on Monday, Sept. 21 from 6 – 8 p.m. Her novel is available on Amazon. Right now, Mason is working on two other novels. She is also planning to make a series from her debut novel. “I want to thank my parents,” said Mason. “My mom was really fond of reading and writing and really encouraged that in me. All of my family is very supportive. My husband and girls have been very supportive, so I have a huge support system.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

their recognition to the audience. “They both wanted me to share that they are very honored to receive this and wish they could have been here.” Local OSU Extension programs have impacted the lives of many area residents including Bill and Kyle Daugherty, Collin McCoy and Gerald Finlay and Kayla Finton. “I grew up on a dairy farm so I’ve always been involved in agriculture, but one summer I went to 4-H camp and I really enjoyed it. I met new friends from other schools and we are still the best of friends.” Kyle has been a camp counselor for three years and is looking forward to going back for his fourth and final year. “As the youngest (in my family) no one ever looked up to me so it’s been fun seeing the same kids every summer, watching them grow and build relationships with them,” he said. Kyle’s dad Bill also has found the OSU Extension office to be a great source for information when dealing with problems on the family’s farm. “We had a ventilation situation and Emily Adams (OSU Extension Educator, Agriculture & Natural Resources and County Director) put us in touch with a dairy education specialist,” Bill said. “We ended up installing 18 fans that helped immensely with the heat we’ve had. Our entire family is very grateful for OSU Extension.” For McCoy, 4-H projects helped him save money for college and lead him to a future in agriculture. “My parents are not farmers so without 4-H and OSU Extension I would not have been exposed to agriculture at this level,” he said. Finton has found OSU Extension useful in several phases of her life. Growing up she was involved in 4-H and as an adult OSU Extension is a helpful source of information for her careers in agronomy and farming. Finlay also uses OSU Extension as a resource. “When you want to get the latest information, who else do you go to, but OSU Extension,” he said. “I thank Emily and her staff for being there for us.” Ryan took a moment after he and Heather received their award to thank all the supporters of OSU Extension who attended the luncheon. “You all busted your tails to keep 4-H in this community and without you, we wouldn’t be here because 4-H wouldn’t be here,” he said. Zinkon agreed that OSU Extension is invaluable to the community. “We live in a great community and the resources and programs OSU Extension offer help make it even better,” she said. Fall Gardening

Cover crops can also be planted a month prior to frost/cold weather. (Some will die after frost while winter-hardy crops will resume growing in the spring.) As they decompose, the cover crops encourage microorganisms, improve the fertility of the soil, add organic matter to the soil and eliminate weeds. 0031_091615

Use your garden to the fullest. As summer plants are harvested, plant fall crops and enjoy fresh produce into November. Many plants enjoy cooler temperature and more consistent moisture. Radish, lettuce, beets, carrots and spinach can still be seeded in early September. Kale, broccoli, and winter onions can also be planted. Don’t forget to weed, water an inch a week-if rain doesn’t fall, and fertilize.

RUNNING FOR VETERANS For the second year, Valor Assisted Living Outreach has had a 5K run in Ohio. This year’s race took place at Lake Park on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 9 a.m. Despite the rain, 57 people came out to run and support veterans in Ohio. The organization has already had seven races in Pennsylvania this year, where they are based. The program was started by Mark Baylis, whose parents live locally and donated a house in Fallsburg to use as an assisted living facility for veterans. “The money raised here will go toward materials needed to refurbish the house,” said Baylis. “More than money, we are in need of volunteers to help remodel the house. We are hoping to be done in the fall of 2016, but we’ve already started to help veterans with services here.” The cost to race was $25 or $30 if purchasing a teeshirt. The race started with the playing of the National Anthem and there were bagels and water for racers after the run. BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT

Commissioners sign resolution to vacateBYTR 70 BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners passed a resolution on Wednesday, Sept. 9 to vacate Township Road 70 in Virginia, Bedford, and Jackson Townships. The commissioners viewed the road recently after all three township trustees requested to have the road vacated. The road runs through an old strip mine and has various issues. The vacation will include part of TR 70 starting from the intersection of CR 297 in Virginia Township, north 0.65 miles to the south line of Jackson Township, continuing through Jackson Township 1.76 miles to the east line of Bedford Township, continuing into Bedford Township 0.37 miles to the intersection with Bedford TR 62. The remaining portion of Bedford

Township will be re-numbered TR 62. Irene Miller also announced that Frontier Power Community Connection Grant has given $2,500 toward the museum-style display case in the court house. Currently, there is $4,600 in that account and Miller said she is going to start doing research on the various types of display cases available. She wants something to match the décor of the court house with plenty of shelves to store antiques and a lock on the case. The commissioners also signed the July Investment Portfolio and bank statements from Doris Frank, Coshocton County Deputy Treasurer. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
