Flu season is here and now is a great time to protect yourself against the virus with an annual flu shot, which is being provided at the Coshocton City Health Department, located at 400 Browns Lane in Coshocton.

“It’s important for people to get flu shots each year to not only protect themselves, but to protect others from getting it,” said Vickie Davis, Director of Nursing at the Coshocton City Health Department.

BETH SCOTT The Coshocton City Health Department will be providing flu shots Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. until Oct. 24 with no appointment necessary.

After that date, people will need to contact the health department to make an appointment for their flu shot by calling 622-1736. The cost is $20. The cost of the vaccine is covered for those with traditional Medicare and Medicaid.

“It’s important (to receive the flu vaccine) because the flu shot protects against three strains of the flu,” said Katherine Clark, Public Health Nurse at the Coshocton City Health Department.

“It’s really important for children and older adults and people with chronic diseases because they are more susceptible, and just other people so they won’t miss work or school.”

Those who should not receive the vaccine are people who have egg allergies, those who have had a bad reaction to the vaccine in the past, and those with Guillan-Barre Syndrome.

Conesville honors two local couples at barbershop show

2011 VOLUNTEERS Eileen and Gene Evans were awarded the 2011 volunteers

The barbershop show held on Saturday evening, Sept. 15 at River View High School featured The Singing Buckeyes, two quartets from the group and Park Avenue, a quartet that used humor and their vocal talent to round out the evening’s entertainment. The show was sponsored by the Conesville Village Council along with local businesses. Bryan Gentile of WTNS was the emcee. The village of Conesville honored a pair of local volunteers for 2011 and 2012 during the intermission. Bill Appis is the Mayor of Conesville.

Eileen and Gene Evans were awarded the 2011 volunteers of the year. Eileen graduated from Conesville School in 1949 as valedictorian.

She served as Conesville school secretary from 1949 to 1955 then worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office from July 1955 until September 30, 1994 when she retired. Eileen has been a member and treasurer of the Conesville Wesleyan Church for 48 years.

Eileen has been a member of the FCV Ladies Auxiliary since 1956. Gene graduated from Conesville School in 1948, served in the United States Army in Okinawa from 1951-1953. After returning home Gene worked at Shaw Barton from 1948 to 1955 then at Clow’s from 1955 until

he retired in 1993 as a machinist. Gene is also a member of the Conesville Wesleyan Church serving as Vice-Chairman of the board and as a

trustee. He is a charter member of the Christian Fellowship breakfast. Gene has been a charter

Eubanks joins Coshocton Hospital Family Physicians Clinic

Coshocton Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Jenifer Eubanks, C-NP, as a certified family nurse practitioner based in the Family Physicians Clinic.

She is working in collaboration with Jerold Meyer, MD, to provide health care services to patients in local long-term care facilities.

Eubanks earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Otterbein University in Westerville, in May, and proceeded to earn her family nurse practitioner certification through the American Academy EUBANKS of Nurse Practitioners. As a certified nurse practitioner, Eubanks provides a full range of services including diagnosis, treatment and management of patient care.

Eubanks worked for several years as a registered nurse with Health Services of Coshocton. There, she was encouraged to advance her education through her Master of Science degree in the hopes she would return to Coshocton to serve the health care needs of the local community.

In welcoming her to the Coshocton Hospital staff, the hospital is also partnering with Health Services of Coshocton to enable Eubanks to provide hospice and home health visits on an as-needed basis.

Eubanks is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses, the Rural Nurse Organization, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was the recipient of the Outstanding ADN student award at COTC. In addition, she has a bachelor of arts in music education from Muskingum University and taught in southern Ohio before returning to Coshocton in 1996.

Eubanks resides in Coshocton with her husband, Keith, and her mother Nancy Morton. In her capacity as a nurse practitioner in the long-term health care setting, Jenifer will not be seeing patients in an office setting, but will be based at the Coshocton Hospital Family Physicians Clinic. She can be contacted by calling 622-0332.

LEMONADE STAND Aaron Ward, age 9, and his neighbor and friend Troy Moran, age 8, had a lemonade and bake sale Sept. 8 in Cooperdale to raise money for Aaron’s Uncle Jim Ashcraft, who was hurt in an oil field accident and is in the Ohio State University Medical Center. The boys raised $300 selling lemonade, cookies, bread, and even some green peppers.

Aaron’s parents are Josh and Kelly Ward. Aaron is in Susie Stout’s fourth grade class at Union Elementary. Stout talked with Aaron about the book “Lemonade War” by Jaqueline Davies, during the Monday morning announcements. The book was being read by the whole school as part of the One Book, One School program. Each night students and their families read assigned chapters and they were asked trivia questions about the reading that involved lemonade stand contests between a brother and a sister. Autumn is a great time to discover what the Coshocton and West Lafayette public libraries have to offer the community. Both local libraries have events geared toward all ages, from infants to senior citizens.

“We look forward to seeing everyone at the library,” said Cathy Haynes, event coordinator at the Coshocton Public Library. “It’s a place for life-long learning. It allows people the opportunity to learn things they might not have known before.”

One of the main events coming up is the Coshocton Public Library’s commemoration of the anniversary of the War of 1812 with a special presentation by Dolley Madison as portrayed by Alice Hoover.

“The upcoming program on Dolley Madison by Alice Hoover is a really big attraction,” said Haynes.

“She (Alice) always does a really great job.”

In addition to Madison being America’s first First Lady, she lived through the two wars that established the U.S., was friends with the first 12 presidents, and watched America evolve from a struggling young republic to the first modern democracy in the world. Hoover will be portraying Madison on Monday, Sept. 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

program on Monday, Oct. 15 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. She will also explain how to obtain free access, take notes, and save information.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will once again make an appearance at the Coshocton Library’s annual Holiday Open House on Friday, Nov. 16.

“He’s always a popular hit with the kids,” said Haynes. “Parents should bring their camera along because Rudolph loves to have his picture taken with the kids.”

In addition to these special programs, the Coshocton and West Lafayette Libraries also offer programs for infants, teens, and adults every month. This year, the story time and baby time programs will go back to a school yeararound format instead of the six-week sessions.

The program requires a one-time registration.

Coshocton has their story time on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 7 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 10:30 – 11 a.m.

“Story time is intended to develop a love of learning and reading for children,” said Haynes.

“What better way to introduce them to a love of books than at the library? What a good place to be. I always challenge the kids to come to the library and not find a book they love. Very few kids leave the library without a book.”

The West Lafayette Library also has story time for young children on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. – noon.

“It’s a chance for young people to fall in love with that gift of reading,” said Andrea Schweitzer, Branch Manager.

Plugged and Unplugged at the library is very popular with local teens. There have been up to 50 teens attending sessions of Plugged and Unplugged.

“It’s a huge draw for kids,” said Haynes.

“They can come here with their friends and have a good time. We like to find things for teens to do here at the library.”

It’s the best night to be a teen at the West Lafayette Branch Library during their B.E.S.T. Night at the Branch for Teens program. B.E.S.T. stands for Books, Electronics, Snacks, and Teens.

“The library is there for them in multiple ways,” said Schweitzer, “We’re a great place for resources, but we’re also a great place to socialize with their friends. Our hope is to connect them with a love of reading. Our goal is to serve the public of all ages. The library is always open to suggestions on how to meet the informational and recreational needs of the community.”

A popular program for adults at the Coshocton library is the seasonal chi classes, taught by Holli Rainwater. The Autumn Chi is a six-week session every Thursday at the library through Oct. 25.

“I like to be challenged,” she said.

Leech took art lessons after working for 40 years.

“I like watercolors because if you don’t like what you did you can throw it in the waste basket and start over,” she said.

Leech displayed her work Sept. 12, during the open house art show Windsorwood held as part of its assisted living week celebration.

“The staff is so kind and wonderful,” said Leech, who is a resident at Windsorwood.

The theme for the week was art for the ages.

“It’s a very busy week, but I don’t mind that when I see my tenants smile and laugh and know they are happy,” said Marla Myers, activities director at Windsorwood.

1952

September 21st, 1952 Two local clock and watch repairmen had been at their trade for a combined 124 years.

Johnson M. Smith, age 85, and Robert V. Lee, age 77, both launched their careers as young men. Smith was 16 years old and Lee was 21.

The two, believed to be among the oldest men still actively engaged in their profession in the state, were employed at the Kenneth Haas Jewelry Store on Main Street. Smith was also the mayor of Coshocton from 1929 to 1934.

Both he and Lee had taken turns repairing the courthouse clock when it was operated by weights. It had been operated by electricity since 1950.

Trinity and the Arts series continues Adventures in India will be the topic of a presentation by Chloe Crouso at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Trinity Episcopal Church.

This past year, Chloe represented Coshocton as a Rotary exchange student in India and has brought back a colorful and entertaining presentation that includes slides, clothing, and other mementos of her year-long experience.

The program is part of the Trinity and the Arts series that is designed to bring artistic and cultural presentations to the community.

The event is free and will be followed by light refreshments. The church is located at the corner of Seventh and Main streets. The public is invited to enter through the red doors facing Main Street.

September 23rd, 1962 Swing your partner and dosey-doe. The East Central Ohio Federation of Square Dance Clubs was making plans to have their annual Fall Festival at Lake Park on Sept. 30. More than 300 square dancers were anticipated to strut their stuff at the festival, all dressed up in their western attire. Members of the two local square dance clubs, The Gingham & Swing ‘Ems, and The Paris & Squares Club were encouraged to attend and recruit new members. The local clubs taught 15 to 20 classes a year and this event was their chance to show off all their moves. The festival was part of observing Square Dancing Week.

September 24th, 1972 Mrs. Eggleston of Coshocton had many talents including cake decorating and quilting, but her most unique talent was that she liked to decorate eggs. Beginning with a raw egg, she used a knife to create a small hole in the shell to empty the egg, which she saved for baking. Once the insides had been removed, she cleaned out the egg shell and decorated the outside with fabrics and cotton, and even painted scenes in the inside. She enjoyed painting rural and religious scenes. She had also made a duck egg into a jewelry box. She mailed her eggs to friends all over the country and had never had one break on arrival.

September 25th, 1982 Nancy Applegate, a new resident of Coshocton, had always loved to walk, especially in the woods observing nature.

She began seriously walking when she was in college and promoted healthy eating, regular exercise, and getting back to nature.

In October, Nancy would travel to Red River Gorge, Ky. to participate in the 80K Advanced Backpacking Trek. She, along with four other women and 14 men, had raised $350 each for the trip, which was to be donated to the American Lung Association of Ohio.

Other than special programs, the library also offers computer access, magazines, a local history room, and, of course, a myriad of books to be read.

“We’re a place for life-long learning,” said Haynes. “It’s a chance for people to come to the library and discover what we have to offer.”

Progressive Water Treatment After more than 32 years of being in business as Progressive Farm Supply and then Progressive Water Treatment in the West Lafayette and Coshocton areas, Tom and Peggy Boyd have decided to retire.

Sophia Meiser, Evelyn Hire and Rylee Shrimplin had high hopes that they would get to see a pig at Ag Awareness Day. “It’s their (Evelyn and Rylee’s) favorite animal and now I’ve started to like them,” said Meiser, who attends Lincoln Elementary with Hire and Shrimplin.

Shrimplin likes pigs so much that she is showing one at the fair for the first time this year.

“My dad did it from the time he was little all the way up to his senior year,” she said. “He was grand champion four times.”

spans generations. Many may think or assume that Johnny Appleseed was a myth or fairytale, when in fact his real name was John Chapman.

His life spanned from Sept. 26, 1774 to his final days in 1845. He was a pioneer and nurseryman who introduced the apple tree to many parts of Ohio, Indian, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

Being born the eldest of ten, John set his sights on the west by the age of 18, living a nomadic life. He was literally responsible for spreading his love of apples and orchards from state to state. Lucky for us, Johnny Appleseed’s commitment and life’s dedication ensured a heritage of apples for generations to come.

Without exception, the Fresno Market has an excellent selection of apples to pick from, by the peck, bushel or bag full. Apples evoke a cozy image of Grandma’s kitchen and wonderful memories of apple pie and smells that remind you of home. They truly are a flavor of fall.

Here is a fun idea to do with your children or grandchildren: celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday by having an apple tribute party in his honor. Have an apple-themed lunch or dinner that focuses on everything apple from start to finish. You may want to try serving an apple salad, fried pork chops with apples, apple cider to drink and without saying, apple pie, crisp or dumplings for dessert. Here is a delicious apple treat that will take you back in time.

Baked Apples 4 large just picked apples (gala or red delicious work nicely) 4 tbsp. butter 4 tbsp. brown sugar 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 24 red hot cinnamon candies Carmel ice cream topping Core all four apples and hollow out some of the flesh to form a nice well. To the well add: 1 tbsp. butter, 1 tbsp. brown sugar, 6 red hot candies and divide the walnuts between the four apples.

Place apples in an oven-safe baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for about 35 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve with whipped topping or vanilla ice cream, and drizzle with caramel topping. Serves four.

The 9th annual Jack Fallon Memorial Ride and Fundraiser will be Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23 at the AEP/Fallon Park, located at the Conesville AEP Plant.

The Coshocton Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council signed an agreement with AEP in September of 1999 to rename the park AEP/Fallon Park after Jack Fallon, an employee of the Conesville AEP plant. Eight years ago, Jack passed away and the Horseman’s Council has been having the fundraiser ever since.

AEP/Fallon Park is mainly an equine park, but is also used for public hunting, fishing, and walking the trails. In order to utilize the park, visitors will need to carry a permit, which is free and available at the Wills Creek Store or on their website. This is a life-long permit, but is not needed to attend the fundraiser this weekend.

The Horseman’s Council is responsible for keeping up with the maintenance of the park, which include 25 miles of trails. Members of the club try to mow every two weeks and use 4-wheelers to clear away brush and fallen trees from the trails. Campsites are available only for equine camping except during deer hunting season when the sites are open to hunters as well.

“It just gives us a good feeling to know it (the park) is there,” said Jan Fallon, wife of the late Jack Fallon, “There’s a lot of people in our county that don’t know it’s there.”

The fundraiser will begin with a memorial ride each day at 10 a.m.

There will also be a hog roast at 6 p.m. and an auction at 7 p.m. with John Kreis as the auctioneer. A donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under is asked for the hog roast, plus a covered dish. Horseman’s Council members are asked to bring two covered dishes. Any items donated to the auction are also appreciated.

Jan said that on average, the memorial fundraiser brings in about 100 people each year. This is the only fundraiser the park has every year, and all the money raised will go toward maintaining the park.

This is just a basic check-up the homeowner can accomplish themselves with no mechanical abilities.

Most reputable HVAC contractors offer a much more intense checkup for the homeowner’s peace of mind. So mark your calendars soon to remind yourself to inspect your furnace or get a qualified technician scheduled soon.

The weather may be getting colder, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop doing outside projects. Doing a little maintenance around the outside of your home can help you prevent some major structural problems from occurring.

Jim Deam, owner/president of B-Dry and John Shrock, owner of Superior Basements, both encourage homeowners to check their gutters and their downspouts this fall.

“You absolutely want to make sure your gutters are clear,” Deam said. “You also need to check your downspout and make sure their underground lines are clear. Most actually have an adapter to them that you can slide off and stick a garden hose down them to make sure they are clear. If you have no idea where your lines go look for the wet spot out in your yard (after it rains).”

“If the grading isn’t right water will run toward your foundation instead of away from it,” he said.

Shrock agreed with Deam.

“You don’t want water sitting along the wall (of your home),” Shrock said.

It’s also important to visually inspect your foundation for cracks.

“Bowing walls also can be signs of foundation problems,” Deam said. “It’s easier to deal with these problems early on.”

Horizontal cracks should be especially watched for.

“If you have a bowed wall with a horizontal crack that keeps getting bigger it means the wall is pushing in,” Shrock said.

The dryness this year also has caused some problems with foundations.

“I’ve actually been in a couple of homes where the foundation shifted because of the extreme dryness,” Shrock said. “Dirt right up against the foundation of homes has shrunk away leaving a gap between the foundation and dirt. That causes an opening for water to come on in.”

He and Deam both agree that now is a good time for homeowners to take an assessment of their homes and get any issues checked out before winter comes.

“If homeowners do a little bit of maintenance they can prevent some of these issues,” Deam said. “They have to be diligent though. Cracks especially are like a leaky roof. If you don’t address them quickly they will get worse.”

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Water Safety. A Red Cross Water Safety class will be offered by Red Cross Authorized Provider One Stop CPR. The class will be at the Coshocton High School pool. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is offering a class on bead jewelry making from 1 to 3 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 23.

This class is geared to young people, 10 years and older, and will be taught by artist Jenn Bush, who earned an art degree from OSU. Participants will begin in the special exhibit gallery to view the museum’s special exhibit

of bead and clay works by Native Americans and contemporary artists. Bush will point out the diversity of styles and explain some of the various methods of beading. Then participants will make their own seed bead bracelet, choosing their own colors and design. (Seed beads are the small glass beads common in American Indian beadwork.) Students may choose from a number of styles suitable for boys and girls alike.
