They call me crazy! That’s what wing walker Tony Kazian said about himself following the Wings Over Coshocton Air Show. Held this past
Saturday at Richard Downing Airport, a crowd estimated at 10,000 was held in awe as Kazian thrilled the crowd of young and old aviation fans alike with his death defying wing walking act. Kazian is pictured here atop Dave Dacy’s Super Stearman in a tribute to our military heroes. The foreground flags were posted as a tribute to Ohio’s fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan prior to the Air Show. More from the air show is on pages 7 and 13. Beacon photo by Mark fortune

Quilting classes offered at museum
What do you really know about that old quilt you picked up at an auction or inherited from a grandparent? Learn how to estimate a quilt’s date by its fabric and pattern and find out how to evaluate a quilt’s value from the way it’s pieced and quilted. Quilts: Collectibles and Keepsakes with Theresa Scheetz will be at the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. She will begin with an historical overview of American quilt making and then elaborate on the quilts that are currently on display in the museum’s special exhibit, Ties That Bind. The exhibit contains 27 quilts, 26 of which are from the museum’s collections dating from the 1830s through the mid 1900s. Theresa is a knowledgeable resource, having studied quilting and taken classes in quilt appraisal. If you are interested in a consultation for a specific quilt, you may arrange a time before the program for Theresa’s evaluation. A fifteenminute time slot will be allotted for each quilt and a donation to the museum of $5 per quilt will be charged. Contact the museum at 622-8710 or e-mail at jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org to set up a consultation time. General admission to Quilts: Collectibles and Keepsakes is $3; free for Friends of the Museum. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located in Roscoe Village at 300 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton, OH 43812.

Dear Editor I wish to invite all of Coshocton to become members of the Friends of the Library. We are in special need of memberships since the state funding for public libraries shrinks every year. We in the Friends of the Library do all we can to support our very fine library by conducting used book sales three times a week and by having two large book sales twice a year. As a member of Friends of the
Library, I have been made aware of the decline of memberships, particularly by banks and businesses in Coshocton that formerly were members. Please reconsider your ability and willingness to support our library. We also need individuals to consider renewing their memberships. We really need your help! Sincerely, Marlyce Parker Friends of the Library Secretary
Balderson honored as “Watchdog of the Treasury” C O L U M B U S — S t a t e thanks to reckless government Representative Troy Balderson (R-Zanesville) was awarded Watchdog of the Treasury Award. The award recognizes key legislators or policymakers every year who work tirelessly to restore responsible limited government, lower taxes, encourage free enterprise and regulatory relief, and promote personal freedom. “I am so happy and humbled to be recognized by the United Conservatives of Ohio,” said Balderson. “Our state is in an intolerable economic situation
spending, irresponsible tax policies and fiscally unsound legislation. I am working to reverse this bleak outlook by cutting government bloat and ensuring every tax dollar has a return.” The award was presented at a ceremony in Columbus by the United Conservatives of Ohio. The United Conservatives of Ohio supports the responsible spending of taxpayers’ dollars, the elimination of government waste, and the free-market system of competition among private sector firms.

airplane engines and smoke filled the sky over Richard Downing Airport. A fitting conclusion to the program was when the A-10 “Warthog” demonstration team took to the skies overhead, proving that American air power and ingenuity are second to none as the A-10 twisted and turned in a mock demonstration of its role to provide ground troops with close combat air support. The day could not have been more perfect or more picturesque for Coshocton County. 7 year old Caitlin Poremba said, “It was very good, I probably liked the A-10 demonstration the best”. Coshocton Mayor Steve Mercer said, “A beautiful day, with ideal temperatures. I can’t believe how many people are out here. It was an ideal combination of everything”. Brenda O’Brien, with the Misty Blues skydiving team commented, “This is a wonderful show, we just love it”. “It was cool”, said Hattie Clark. “It was really cool. I have been to each air show ever since I was little. I liked the Misty Blues”, said Kaitlyn Clark. “I loved the air show. It was totally awesome”, remarked Christa Lane. “I liked the A-10 because it was loud”, said Luke Burnosky. Caleb Burnosky exclaimed, “It was amazing. I liked the Misty Blues the best”. Andrea Schweitzer, marketing coordinator for the air show remarked, “The support of this community to bring an air show of this caliber and type is just outstanding. There were over 80 sponsors and it takes an entire community to do this, not just a few people. I think the airport board is very forward thinking to do this – not just for the community but for expansion – and future development of Richard Downing Airport. The community should be very proud today that they were a part of developing Richard Downing Airport. This is the fourth air show and we see the runway extended today. We couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout. We were also able to pay tribute to our veterans today, young and old, and that’s what it’s all about, being able to come together as a community”. (See pictures of the 2010 Air Show on page 13.)
A very sincere and heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the following businesses and individuals who supported the 5th Annual BPW (Business & Professional Women) Cake Auction. Because of all your help we have exceeded our goal. We will have a successful year of giving back to the community. Again “THANK YOU”.

The American flags displayed along the entrance to the 2010 Wings Over Coshocton air show waved proudly in the breeze as thousands of aviation enthusiasts made their way onto the grounds of Richard Downing Airport this past Saturday. You knew from that moment that it was going to be a special day. And special it was. Opening ceremony emcee Ken Smailes summed it up when he said, “This is just about as perfect a day as you can get”. Following the presentation of the colors and National Anthem, Bethel Toler made these comments, “I welcome you today to the Wings Over Coshocton Air Show in honor of our veterans, living and fallen. One of the best things that has ever happened here is the addition of our runway to 5,000 feet which we just completed and paved. Without the community getting behind us, we wouldn’t have realized this for our airport. This is a very important piece of our economic toolbox to help our community. Coshocton sure has a group that sticks together when there is a common goal.” Coshocton County Commissioner D. Curtis Lee spoke on behalf of the Board of Commissioners and thanked those involved in the 2010 air show; particularly the 80 plus sponsors that helped make the air show possible and those that helped make the runway extension happen. State Representative Troy Balderson and a representative from Congressman Zach Spaces’ office also spoke. The Ohio Flags of Honor ceremony recognized the over 200 fallen soldiers from the state of Ohio that have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gino Zimmer and his wife, who hail from Columbus, have continued what began as a tribute to the men of Lima Company and as a way to honor their son, who was killed in Iraq. Zimmer said, “It was a great program today. Having the military help today was neat. I would come back next week if you wanted me to.” Visit www.ohioflagsofhonor. org for more information and a way to help this effort. Veterans’ young and old alike were shown how much their sacrifice is appreciated when they walked through a human tunnel receiving handshakes, claps on the back and hugs. The crowd thrilled to the roar and distinct shape of the United States Air Force B2 Stealth Bomber flyover before the Misty Blues delivered from the skies above a 30 foot by 60 foot American flag, landing adjacent to the Ohio Flags of Honor on the hillside. Wing walker Tony Kazian, Jim “Fang” Maroney in his DeHavilland Super Chipmunk, nineteen year old stunt pilot Jason Flood and the Iron Eagle aerobatics team provided the estimated crowd of 10,000 with thrilling and chilling snap rolls and maneuvers at treetop height that had everyone on the edge of their seats as the roar of

Next year, Vance said she hoped to add a new biking and hiking class and purchase a new building for the YWCA facilities. Vance said the current building was fine, but not large enough to have large classes.

Coshocton Youth learn about county government by beth dulaney
The Coshocton County Youth Leadership class got their government lesson from hands-on experiences last Wednesday, Sept. 15 when they toured the Courthouse, Sheriff’s Office, and the Richard Downing Airport. Their morning started at the Coshocton Foundation where they met and had a quick bite to eat before heading out on their day. Their first stop was at the Courthouse Annex where they split up into groups and learned how the treasurer’s, recorder’s and auditor’s offices do their daily jobs. At the end of that tour, they went on a scavenger hunt where each student had to take what he or she had learned and apply their knowledge to answer the questions on their hunt. The first person finished received a

McDonald’s gift card as well as the four runnersup. Next, the students traveled to the County Commissioners office where they had the privilege to sit in on a County Commissioner’s meeting. Students were able to ask questions “Where you can have just about anything printed, except money!” such as “What are some of the daily problems 520 Main Street, Coshocton • Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30 p.m. that the commissioner’s face?”, “If the extension 740-622-4429 levy doesn’t pass, will there be enough funding e-mail: sprintprint@saferinternet.com available?”, and “If there was one thing you could change about your job, what would it be?” To that question, Commissioner Dane R. Shryock answered that he wished the general public could understand how difficult it is to make the decisions they make on a regular basis and that they are always trying to make decisions that are for the good of the community. After thanking the Commissioners for their time, the group headed across the street to the main Courthouse and received a VIP tour from • Country Setting Clerk of Courts, Janet Mosier. past 33 years. Then, the students went across the hall to learn about the Clerk of Courts office where the walls are piled high with old Coshocton County Court records, dating clear back to when the county first began. Janet Mosier showed the students old records from back in the 1800s. Next on the tour was maybe the scariest but also maybe the most interesting stop. The students visited the Coshocton County jail. Lt. MacDonald showed them most of the jail including the kitchen where cooks make three meals a day for the inmates. Most of the time, it’s fairly low stress, but when the jail has over 100 inmates to cook for, it can become very stressful. Lt. MacDonald also talked about outsourcing trustees. This is when the jail takes its most trusted inmates and outsources them to area non-profit organizations in the county. MacDonald said it’s nice for them because they can get out of the jail cells and get some fresh air while giving back to the community. Then, he showed them the laundry room where they go through at least three washing machines and dryers a year. One of the more disturbing parts of the tour was the small padded cell where they sometimes hold very violent inmates or inmates threatening to do harm to themselves or others. “I’m hoping they learn about dealing with the safety of officers, overpopulation, and the safety of our inmates,” said Lt. MacDonald. “We don’t want anyone to get hurt here. Officers or inmates. The safety of our officers was a main push when trying to pass the levy last year. Also, the safety of our inmates. With that many inmates, it’s hard to focus on health issues. Sometimes all these people need is just someone to talk to and with overpopulation, an officer can’t spend that oneon-one time with an inmate.” Before leaving the jail, Sgt Bricker showed the students the dispatch room where all Coshocton County 911 calls are received. Glad to be out of the jail, the students received a special demonstration by police dog, Dingo and Officer Stone. Dingo is a five-yearold Belgian Malinois and lives with his trainer, Officer Stone. Pictured here is Brian Hawkins, Gunnery Sergeant US Marines, presenting the floral tributes at the West Lafayette Troop Train memorial service, Sunday, Sept. 19. The village of West Lafayette had a memorial service for the 33 men who were killed on Sept. 11, 1950 during the Troop Train Wreck. The Ridgewood High School band entertained the rather large crowd gathered there with a patriotic tribute and the National Anthem. Pastor Dave Kraft of First Baptist Church gave the invocation and Mayor Jack Patterson welcomed the guests including two of the Coshocton County Commissioners, Curtis Lee and Dane Shryock. Master of Ceremonies, LTC Ed Chapdelanie, introduced the commander of the 1st Battalion 109 who talked about the annual ceremony at Wilkes-Barre where he met ten survivors from the Troop Train. One had been injured and told his horrific story to the people gathered at Wilkes-Barre. “It’s a tremendous memorial to those soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” the commander said of the West Lafayette memorial. Chapdelanie also talked about the two podiums used that was made from the tree that had been planted in memory of John Terry, a WTNS employee who not only reported what had happened, but set up a telephone line where survivors could communicate directly with their families. One podium will remain here at West Lafayette and the other will go to Wilkes-Barre, PA. The main speaker was Col. Kirk Haschak, US Army (retired) and he spoke about the positive things that came out of the accident such as the people of the community coming together to help the survivors. He also said he was surprised by the number of people attending the ceremony. He ended his speech by saying, “Let us continue to keep them alive through our sense of community, of service, and of remembrance today and always.” Herb Tidrick of the Coshocton County Veterans Service Office read the names of the 33 men who were killed and the Coshocton County Veterans Honor Guard fired a rifle salute while the Ridgewood High School band played “Taps”. beacon photo

River View................................................................................ district. We used some title money we received from the federal government to purchase a program through AVEAS – which is nationally recognized and research based, and we worked with Mr. Gallagher to get Keith Deltano here. Mr. Deltano really inspired our kids to do the right thing. We’ve often heard that buzzword of bullying and we can name a lot of things that happen on that same line. But it boils down to this - the climate and culture of our building is affected by what our kids do every day”.

“Like I told our seniors today, anytime we can help one situation – help one kid or reduce the amount of instances that happen across the board at any percentage that’s going to be a positive thing. We have great kids at River View; we have great things that happen here every day. We’ve been an excellent high school for six years in a row, that’s not going to happen with total chaos. That being said, we can always get better and that’s our plan”. At River View, an acronym has been established that says; Bullying Ends And Respect Starts, with each of the capital letters spelling out BEARS.
