WEST LAFAYETTE – Most people in Coshocton County visit the Coshocton County Fair at least once each year, but do you know how and why it began? Dan and June Markley of West Lafayette presented the History of the Coshocton County Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the West Lafayette Branch Library.

“I have always been interested in the fair,” said Dan. “When I was nine, my mom let me go to the fair by myself because we lived just below the fairgrounds. I would go up to the fair and stay all day.”

This is the 165th anniversary of the fair, and for the 150th, Dan wanted to do something special. He decided to write a book and after many hours scourging the microfilm at the library, he and June compiled a 150-year historical book of the Coshocton County Fair.

Dan shared some of his research, memories, and memorabilia of the fair during his presentation at the library.

that each county had to have something highlighting agriculture in their county.

The next year, the first Coshocton County Fair was held in Jacobsport, which is present-day Plainfield.

Until the 1940s, the fair was the place to see and be seen. It was a social outing for many people in the county. Men would be dressed in suits and top hats and the women would wear their best dresses.

A picnic lunch would be packed so the whole family could spend the day at the fair. After the Second World War, people started “dressing down” when attending the fair and the days of eating a picnic lunch under the parasol on the grounds were gone.

“That was a social thing,” said Dan. “You had a dress on or a suit on. That was a dress-up place, besides church.”

The railroad also brought change to the fair as people from out of state started to come. In one day, up to 21,000 people came to the Coshocton County Fair on the railroad.

from Golden’s with the stipulation that the dress had to be returned to the fairboard right after the wedding ceremony.

“One thing at the fair (during this time), all the soldiers in the service would come to the fair and march and do drills in front of the grandstand,” said Dan. In the 1920s, when the fairboard started, the fair was in dire need of money and threatened to close. The Canal Lewisville Methodist Church stepped in and financed the fair.

“People have no idea what it takes to keep the fair going,” said June.

Another attraction that used to be at the fair, and was always popular when it rained, was a roller skating tent at the Seventh Street entrance.

“Me and Juney used to go in there and skate when we were dating,” said Dan. There also used to be motorcycle races at the track, but after one man was killed, the motorcycle races went by the wayside. Another major event took place shortly after in 1954 that was a major blow to the fairgrounds: the grandstand caught on fire.

“I was at work and I asked my boss if I could go take pictures of the grandstand on fire, and he told me that wasn’t my job,” said Dan. “So we have no pictures of the grandstand on fire.”

Some other memories people attending shared was the salt water taffy stand, the peanut guy in the grandstands, and having pictures taken in booths.

there used to be a building for chickens, ducks, and the like,” said Dan. “There got to be so many chickens that were shipped in box cars from New York, and the judges would go in the box cars and judge them. At that time, the fairboard was responsible for feeding and watering the chickens, and in one day, there were 1,700 shipped into the fair at one time.”

The Coshocton County Fair has been housed in many locations throughout the county. In 1872, it was located up by the present-day five-way light in Coshocton. It has also been held at the modern-day Himebaugh Lot with some tracts up Burt Avenue and the Red Sea area. It has also been held on the court square in years past.

Back in the 1800s after the fair started, instead of awarding ribbons, the Agricultural Society awarded diplomas. Dan considers himself lucky to own a copy of a diploma given out for the best homemade pie in 1852, the second year of the fair. The women he got it from had a Benton Clark painting that had an unfortunate accident.

“Her boys were throwing a football around and she kept telling them they were going to break something,” said Dan. “They broke the frame to that Benton Clark painting and the diploma was put in the back as filler. I told her to go home and give those boys a hug for me. I would not have that if those boys wouldn’t have busted that frame.”

For three years at the fair, every time you purchased something downtown, you got a ticket for the chance to win an automobile at the fair during the 1930s. It was also during this time that weddings were performed at the fair. The fairboard would lend the bride a dress

COSHOCTON – For several years, the grandstand at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds has been in need of an update. With constant leaks and cracks in the walls, the grandstand was the top priority on the fairboard’s maintenance list. When the state offered all counties a $50,000 matching grant through its Ohio Agriculture Society Facilities Grant Program, the fair board decided to apply and use that money to renovate the existing grandstand.

“In March of 1954, the old wooden structure burned to the ground,” said Jim McClure, secretary of the fair board. “For 63 years, the current structure has survived pretty well with minimum maintenance.”

The Coshocton County Commissioners have committed the $50,000 as matching funds for the grant. Other organizations have donated money as well and include The Montgomery Foundation, The Coshocton Foundation, Kiwanis, Frontier Power Community Connections Fund, and individual and memorial donations. Private individuals have donated $2,177, and between private and organization donations, the fairboard has raised $159,677. The total cost of the project is $247,440.

“We haven’t promoted this too much to the public because people are tapped out when it comes to donations like this,” said McClure. “We were trying to see how much we could raise without publicity, but any donation from any club, group, organization, or individual would be greatly appreciated.”

Renovations on the current structure are slated to begin after this year’s fair. roof replacement, replacing siding and hand rails, sandblasting the structure, painting the beams, tightening braces, new lighting, and replacing the south wall due to cracks caused by water collection.

“The public won’t see any updates for this year’s fair,” said Ward Karr, treasurer of the fairboard. “But we hope to get started right after the fair is over.”

McClure said that after this year’s fair, phase one of the project, which includes replacing the roof and siding, is slated to begin.

“The grandstand was the main item on our agenda,” said McClure. “It was something that had to be done.”

The $50,000 grant money is only available to county agricultural societies once every 20 years or so. The grant application was completed by McClure with assistance from Dorothy Skowrunski at the Coshocton Port Authority. Pat Kelly of Kelly Architectural Services, Inc. of Zanesville will be the architect for the project.

Premium Ag Kids dedicate displays to former member

COSHOCTON – The Premium Ag Kids 4-H Club is using the fair to pay special tribute to former member Anthony Moran.

Moran, a 2016 graduate of Licking Valley High School, was in a serious car crash this summer.

Three of his siblings, Jennifer, Sheldon and Ben are still in the club.

“There has been a total of eight Moran kids in the club during my 20 plus years with it,” said Susan Brinker, club advisor. “Right now 10 out of the 16 in the club are related to him in some way so this really touches home with the kids.”

Anthony is the adopted son of Jay and Sue Moran and Brinker said they live just over the Coshocton County line in Licking County.

Moran “He hasn’t been an active member for a while, but was for four or five years,” Brinker said. “When he got to junior high and high school he started focusing on athletics. He’s a tremendous athlete.

He went to state in wrestling and is an amazing football player. He was on his way to football practice for the Licking County All-Stars when the crash happened. It was a one car accident. He had his seatbelt on and was not speeding. To my knowledge they don’t know what caused the accident.”

Brinker was told after the accident he was flown to OSU by medical helicopter and is now in the hospital in Licking County and waiting to go back to OSU’s Dodd Hall for extensive physical therapy.

“Not only our club, but the community also has really rallied around the family,” she said.

General rules at the fair No person will be permitted to: • Sell or distribute free, any merchandise • Post or display signs • Distribute handbills or advertising material • Make solicitations of any nature on the fairgrounds except in contracted concession or commercially rented space.

No smoking is permitted in any barn and/or exhibition building.

No dogs or other pets, except seeing eye or Junior Fair dogs on their designed show day are permitted on the Fairgrounds.

No bikes, skateboards, roller skates or in-line skates are permitted on the Fairgrounds.

Anyone with a golf cart/ATV must provide proof of insurance to the fair board office. A sticker will be provided to put on the unit as proof at the cost of $50. Home-owners coverage is not acceptable unless a rider in the policy includes operation of golf cart/ATV. Golf cart/ATV use is limited to fair board personnel, concessionaires, and emergency service personnel.

Exhibitors may not remove any displays or exhibits prior to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Fairboard members discuss what it takes to run the fair

COSHOCTON – Organizing the Coshocton County Fair each year is a year-long process and nobody knows that better than the Coshocton County Agricultural Society. With electric bills, paying premiums, entertainment, and employees, and operating the grounds in the off-season, the fairboard depends a lot on the community to help out.

“I think the biggest challenge is to be able to have enough funds at the end of the year to maintain infrastructure, buildings, and lights,” said Ward Karr, treasurer of the fairboard. “We depend on a lot of help from the community, grants, and donations to keep us going.”

Bob Buxton, who has been on the fairboard for 37 years, agrees that the biggest challenge the board faces is to educate the public about what it takes to keep the fair up and running.

“The biggest challenge for us is to keep the public informed on what it takes to keep the fair going,” said Buxton. “They don’t realize the cost it is to run the fair.

We are not funded by anybody. We are completely self-funded.”

One of the reasons other county fairs have a cheaper admission charge is because they are funded in part by corporate sponsors. The Coshocton County Fair has no corporate sponsors.

Attendance at the fair the past several years has been low, but fairboard members try to bring something new to the fair every year to keep people coming.

“We try to make things different in the art hall every year so that people will come back,” said Buxton, who is in charge of the art hall. “We start in the art hall on Monday before the fair cleaning the hall, then the quilts come in on Tuesday and we judge them Wednesday. It’s a full week even before the fair starts.”

Karr has been busy getting ready for the fair as well.

This year, he put a new chain link fence up around the horse racing arena and new numbers on the hog pens.

He is also the superintendent of the speed department.

“I just enjoy it,” said Karr. “My kids were in 4-H and they’re all grown up and I’ve got grandkids now who have been through the program. I enjoy going down, participating, and helping out.”

Karr has been a member of the fairboard for about 40 years and is currently treasurer and is in charge of the gates and collecting the money at the end of every day.

Every year, six members are elected or re-elected to the fairboard and the president of the board has a two-year term.

“Anybody can run for the fairboard,” said Karr. “You have to have a fair membership for two years and 10 signatures on a petition from people who are fairboard members.”

Karr said that during the fair, he will sometimes put in 16-hour days from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m.

“I try to help out the other members when I have time,” said Karr. “It takes a lot of work on everybody’s part. One guy can’t be in charge of every department.”

The fair has changed over the years and Karr thinks that the biggest change has had to do with technology.

“Probably the biggest change I’ve seen is in the midway because of the digital age,” said Karr. “Kids now are playing on their computers and phones and that has almost put the vendors out of business.”

However, the fair has always been and continues to be a place to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

“I enjoy working with people and meeting new people,” said Buxton. “I’ve been to 22 county fairs this summer and just talking with people at the other fairs and getting new ideas, that’s something I really enjoy.”

New pens in place at junior fair swine barn

COSHOCTON – The junior fair swine barn at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds is now fully equipped with new pens thanks to the fundraising efforts of the hog committee.

“The pens were old and wooden and the hogs were getting too big for them with a lot coming in close to 300 pounds,” said Stephanie Snyder, who served on the committee and is the county hog representative for 4-H. “A lot of them also had broken latches.”

comfortably fit in them. The updates also will make it easier for people to come check out the hogs.

“There is more room now because the aisles are wider, which is nice because it’s a pretty popular barn for visitors,” Snyder said. “We pushed hard for these updates the past two years and worked on it for at least two years before that.”

To help raise funds for the project, the committee offered people the opportunity to sponsor a pen for $250, make a $500 to $5,000 contribution for the contributor board or for a $50,000 donation have their name put on the outside of the junior fair swine barn.

“The pen sponsorships were pretty popular,” Snyder said. “It’s been amazing. Our contributor board is starting to fill up too.”

People are still welcome to make donations as the committee has a few more projects in mind to update the barn.

“There has been talk of maybe adding fans or a water system so there will be water in every pen and people won’t have to haul it if they don’t want to,” Snyder said.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to help with updates to the swine barn can make checks out to the Coshocton County Agriculture Society and mail them to c/o Hog Committee, 707 Kenilworth Ave., Coshocton, OH 43812.

“The kids that show hogs have really had to struggle to get them in and out of the old pens and they didn’t always work right and it got frustrating,” Snyder said.

“They’ve worked hard and deserve these nicer pens and to have it looking really nice in there now.”

Conley maintains fairgrounds for more than 30 years

COSHOCTON – Taking care of the Coshocton County Fairgrounds has been the story of John Conley’s adult life.

Conley started doing maintenance work at the fairgrounds for his father, John Conley Sr., when he was 19 and 32 years later is still on the job, now serving as the grounds superintendent.

The job is year round for Conley, but his busiest month is September when set up for the fair starts.

“I go from eight hour days to 10 or 11,” he said.

Conley and his crew of four during the fair have a long list of tasks to complete prior to the annual event including spraying the barns down with disinfectant, putting up the snow fences, moving equipment that is stored in the barns during the offseason, setting up the trash cans and benches and much more.

Once the fair gets going he can be on the job until 12 or 1 a.m. each day.

“I like the work,” Conley said. “I have to report to the board, but I pretty much get to be my own boss. There’s been three generations of my family doing this. My dad still works for me and my youngest son works for me too.”

Once the fair is over him and his crew work on cleaning up, do maintenance on their equipment and then spend the rest of the year doing upkeep work and making sure the fairgrounds are ready for other events held there.

COSHOCTON - Beginning the Fair year of 2017, camping, box seats and reserved parking invoices will be mailed Jan. 31 and payment will be due by May 1. There will be a 30 day period where camping fees can be paid with a $50 late fee and reserved parking at a $20 late fee. After May 31, the spot will be put into a lottery of waiting names to be drawn by the end of June each year. The new owner will be notified that they have 30 days to make a payment.
