CotC Vice president for Business and Finance named a CFo of the year

David Brillhart, vice president for business and finance at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and senior fiscal officer at The Ohio State University at Newark, has been named a chief financial officer (CFO) of the year

by Columbus Business First. Brillhart was honored in the nonprofit, public funding source category.

Amidst dwindling state and federal support, COTC is thriving due in part to Brillhart’s leadership, noted COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D. “Under his guidance, the college has not only invested in technology, facilities and programs, but is tracking to have adequate reserves and eliminate all debt by 2012. This is an incredible achievement considering the major initiatives undertaken recently, including establishing three full-service extended campuses and adapting to an enrollment that has nearly tripled in FTE in 10 years,” wrote Coe in nominating Brillhart.

It is COTC’s vision to improve both qualitatively and quantitatively, and while double-digit enrollment growth at the college has supported that vision, fiscal viability remains critical to sustaining success. guidance, efficiency of operations between COTC and Ohio State Newark has become recognized as a model statewide. At the request of Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, Brillhart recently presented an efficiency report to a committee studying best practices of efficiency in higher education.

“It is nearly impossible to attain individual achievement in higher education administration,” said Brillhart of his award. “Only a great place and a great group of people working together make this kind of recognition possible. We have accomplished a lot, and I’m thrilled to have been part of it.”

Brillhart, a lifelong resident of Coshocton, has been affiliated with COTC since 1996. He holds a Master of Science in Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

The Coshocton Community Children’s Choir will have auditions for its 24th season on Oct. 11 – 13 at the Presbyterian Church.

Singers for the choir are in grades four through eight with unchanged voices. A prepared song is not used. Concerts for this season will be Dec. 5, 2010 and May 1, 2011 with rehearsals on Tuesdays from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday morning before each concert. Choir members come from Coshocton, Newcomerstown, Ridgewood, River View, Sacred Heart, Coshocton Christian Tabernacle, Pataskala, Indian Valley, and several home schools.

The event will be Oct. 14 at the Coshocton County Career Center on Airport Road and will start at 6:30 p.m. WTNS will broadcast the event and the moderator will be Ken Smailes, WTNS News Director.

Another race that has been of interest is the race for Representative to Congress for the 18th District. Coshocton public library hosts author of Coshocton County Covered Bridges The Coshocton Public Library hosted author Terry E. Miller on Monday, Sept. 20 from 6:45 – 8 p.m. Miller has recently published a book about the covered bridges of Coshocton County and was at the library promoting his book. He also gave a lecture about covered bridges in the United States and China and how the two differ in terms of design.

Miller was a professor at Kent State whose main focus was music.

His passion for covered bridges began as a young child when his father began shooting pictures of covered bridges in 1952. When his father lost interest, Terry continued his. He began studying covered bridges in his early teenaged years and came to Coshocton for the first time at the age of 21 to sift through the archives and research covered bridges in the county. He wrote his first book in 1975 entitled, “The Covered Bridges in Tuscarawas County”.

“It’s been a passion ever since,” said Miller, “Why it’s that way, I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter.”

The title of Miller’s lecture was “The Construction and Use of Covered Bridges in North America: Contrasts from Chinese pattern”.

He started by giving a brief history of covered bridges and explained a little about his research process.

the United States are very rare and originally came from Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

When they came to the States, the designs for the bridges changed and they were more prominent in the eastern part of the country.

Miller then talked about all the different engineering details on a bridge and explained the various trusses that were used in building covered bridges and their origin. He also gave a brief history of all the books written about covered bridges including the very first book written in 1931.

Miller explained that covered bridges are becoming almost like an endangered species. One major problem with preserving covered bridges is severe weather and vandalism including arson. He also said that a lot of people are tearing down covered bridges that are still well-maintained and in good condition just to build a new one.

Because of this, the bridges are losing their true identity.

“They have no spirit,” Miller said, “They have no soul.”

Miller closed his presentation by opening up the floor for questions.

All proceeds from Miller’s book went to the Coshocton Public Library.

Morgan says that is why she wrote about her experience. “I am very honest in my book,” she said. “I share my pain completely, in a hope that it will help others who are experiencing pain or grief.”

Rev. Jan Coffman and Ruth Edwards, from Grace UMC, were the co-chairs of the event.

Coffman says they were pleased with the turnout at the conference. “Ruth had heard Phil Morgan sing a few years ago when she was visiting her brother in Iowa,” said Coffman. “That was a few months after Pam had been injured. Phil shared the couple’s story with the audience and he affirmed that Pam would stand and sing again. Fifteen months after the accident, she did just that. Pam’s story was so inspiring and their music so uplifting, that Ruth said we needed to bring them here to Coshocton and we are certainly glad that we did. This has been a wonderful ecumenical event.”

Zachary Mills, a 2010 graduate of River View High School, has earned a Trustee Scholarship to attend the University of Mount Union.

Mills is the son of Rick and Missy Mills of Coshocton.

A member of the swim, cross country and track teams, Mills was also an Eagle Scout, mills National Honor Society Vice President, German Club Vice President. He was also a member of the Roscoe United Methodist Church, Letterman’s Club and math club. Mills participated in a variety of service opportunities and was presented with the Muskingum Valley Educational Center Outstanding Senior of the Year for River View High School.

1 score of at least 1220, and either a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or a high school rank in the top 15 percent of their class.

Nearly ninety women attended the Women’s Conference on Saturday, September 25 at Grace United Methodist Church led by Pam Morgan.

Pam and her husband, Phil are talented musicians from Kansas City, MO, who began singing gospel music full-time in 1996. In June of 2000, they were in a serious car accident that left Pam completely paralyzed from the chest down.

Even though top surgeons said she would never feel or move most of her body again, she has made a miraculous recovery, which the couple attributes to the healing power of God. The program that Pam led for the Women’s Conference was entitled Extreme Makeover…

Inside Edition, where she focused on showing women how to look for their beauty and worth from the inside. “As women, we tend to build our self esteem on our appearance,” said Morgan.

“I experienced this in my own life. After my accident, I felt I lost everything ‘appearancewise’ Through the process of healing and recovery, I underwent an ‘extreme makeover’ on the inside. I learned that sometimes God has to prune us back, so we can grow, just like a gardener in a vineyard. Through pruning off the pretty leafy parts, the vines can then produce sweet delicious fruit.”

The Morgan’s are back on the road touring with their music, performing around 120 concerts annually. Pam recently released an autobiography, entitled I Stand, based on her struggle to recover from her accident. She now also conducts women’s conferences based on the valuable insights from God that she gained through her recovery.

“It took me seven years to write my book,” she said. “The lessons I discovered came in intervals. One of the biggest questions or requests I receive now is to talk with someone who is going through a similar situation—to help them feel better somehow. My advice is that we can’t fix someone else’s pain. They need to allow themselves time to do things in their own time and work through all of their emotions.”

The Coshocton County Ohio State University Extension, Soil & Water Conservation District and Farm Service Agency will again sponsor a Drive-It-Yourself Fall Foliage and Farm Tour.

The tour will be Saturday, Oct. 16, 10 a.m.

- 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 17, Noon - 5 p.m. in Coshocton County. This year’s tour will highlight the Northwest section of Coshocton County. The tour will continue to focus on some of the history of the area as well as provide the opportunity for participants to view first-hand the workings of various agricultural enterprises along the tour route.

The tour will begin with the first stop and map pickup at Walhonding Valley Fire Dept., located just off U.S. Route 36, 9 miles west of Coshocton in Warsaw, OH. Tour maps will be available at this first stop on Saturday between the hours of 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Sunday, from

Some features of the 2010 Coshocton County Fall Foliage and Farm Tour are Mohawk Dam, beef farm, dairy farm, a community supported agriculture (CSA) operation and more!

The lunch stop will be at the Pilgrim Hills.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 4. The Board office will be open 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on that day. Regular hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

The Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District will be having their 68th Annual Meeting and Banquet Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Coshocton County Career Center.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $ 5 for children 10 and under. The Fresno Methodist Ladies will be serving a Baked Ham Dinner, and tickets may be purchased at the Coshocton SWCD Office located in the County Services Building, 724 S. 7th Street or by calling 622-8087, ext. 4. The speaker at this year’s banquet will be Bill Huston, Farm Service Agency County Executive Director for Muskingum and Morgan Counties. Huston will share his experiences of a 13 month-long tour as an Agricultural Advisor in Diyala Province, Iraq explaining the challenges and opportunities that confront the Iraqi farmer, farm organizations and Agricultural Ministry.

Huston’s presentation will share farming practices observed during his tour and will highlight the cultural differences and similarities that the Iraqi farmer faces compared to their U.S. counterparts.

The Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission will cause an election of two supervisors of the Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District to be in accordance with Chapter 1515. 01-14 of the Ohio Revised Code.

The candidates are Jim McKinney, Knox Porteus and Greg Waters. Voting will take place prior to the Coshocton SWCD Annual Meeting from 6 7 p.m. All voters must be at least 18 years of age.

Bishop Mano Rumalshah, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Peshawar in the Church of Pakistan, will speak at The Coshocton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Oct. 3, World Communion Sunday.

His presentation will focus on peacemaking in Pakistan. Bishop Mano brings a deep commitment to Christian presence and ministry in the territory of Pakistan that borders Afghanistan.

Bishop Mano has engaged in ministry in England and in Pakistan. He is experienced in developing interfaith relationships and in cross-cultural communications. Rev. Jonathan Carlisle from the Coshocton Presbyterian Church is looking forward to Bishop Mano’s visit.

“He will lead a Sunday School class that morning beginning at 9:15 and then lead the worship service at 10:30,” said Carlisle.

Bishop Mano graduated from universities in Punjab, Calcutta, Karachi and Cambridge. He has been an Anglican Deacon, Priest and Bishop since 1994. “He has worked with the British Council of Churches and has served an Anglican church in Southall, Diocese of London,” added Carlisle. “He has also been Priest and college lecturer and later Bishop of Peshawar in Pakistan. September 30th, 1970 Let’s sew together! Local women from eight area churches had come together for one purpose: to unite women of all churches in projects which would stress sisterhood through community service projects. One project they were currently working on was free sewing classes. The class was open to women of all ages and would be every Tuesday morning and evening through November. Many local women had already expressed high interest in the class and local crafters couldn’t wait to discover new techniques and beginners were eager to learn basic sewing.

Fencing is the first step but planning for livestock water is also important. Collecting and conveying water from seeps and wet spots to a stock tank serves two purposes. A clean source of water is available for drinking while drying up those muddy areas. It may be necessary to build fenced stream crossings for livestock movement.

Where it is not feasible to fence streambanks due to frequent out-of-bank flow and flooding, there are options such as fencing one side only, installing an electric high tensile wire on thirty foot post spacing, or piping clean water to strategically located stock tanks.

Winners of the 11th annual Coshocton Golf Scramble to benefit Crohn’s and Colitis research at River Greens were Ed Tompkins, Richard Goss, Jim Kreis and Gary Thomas. They shot 10 under par. The team of Al Mueller, Bob Marshall, Alan Boster and Curt Boster finished second at 7 under par. The third spot went to Brad Haynes, Patrick Moran, Ron Glosser and Ken Ramage.

A total of $110,839.71 has been raised from golf outings, yard sales, donations, car shows and band jams. In addition to the golfers and social participants, fifty local businesses provided gift certificates and in-kind support. Also, forty individuals provided financial donations.

Several area church youth leaders and groups combined their efforts on Wednesday evening, Sept. 22 to conclude a day of activities that started with, “See You at the Pole” events held at area high schools in the morning. The event included a large inflatable, popcorn, volleyball, corn hole, cotton candy, games and live music provided by local band, “Saving Sunday” from New Bethel Ministries. Coshocton Church of the Nazarene youth pastor Brian Daniels inspired the youth to do more to spread God’s word among their friends in the community. “The Homecoming” from Canton was the featured band for the event.

Juniors who have recently begun their career-technical training at the Coshocton County Career Center took an afternoon to join forces with the seniors in their respective programs to compete at the school’s annual fall mixer, Friday, Sept. 17.

Each year, the school has an activity day the last three periods of the day so that students and staff can relax and have a little informal fun on campus. This year’s outdoor games included a basketball shoot, a football toss, a softball throw, a bean bag toss, lawn golf, horseshoes and Frisbee bowling. Additionally, each program competed in the annual tug-of-war contest.

The organized games were sponsored by the school’s Student Council organization and staffed by career center instructors and administrators.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” said Karen Overholt, Career Center instructor and Student Council advisor. “We like to encourage our students, especially the juniors, to sign up for as many games as possible. Several students in each of three employability classes at the Coshocton County Career Center were provided the opportunity to experience teamwork in a very unusual challenge. Part of a special workshop focused on leadership and teamwork, the students were tasked with untangling themselves from a human chain.

The exercise was part of a youth lesson regularly given by Salvation Army Youth Pastor Brennen Hinzman who runs the teen program at the Coshocton chapter building. Called The Maxx, Hinzman has been leading the group’s activities for three years now, after moving here from outside of New York City. He says the fact that he’s moved here from such a large city makes him somewhat of a novelty to his group’s members, though he is originally from the Canton area.

The program he delivered at the career center was focused on characteristics of good leadership and how teamwork among subordinates and their leaders plays in instrumental role in an organization’s overall success.

To illustrate many of the concepts discussed, Hinzman had the high school juniors and seniors form a human chain and then had them work together to unravel themselves. Students had to work together and it was interesting to observe who took leadership in providing the team recommendations and instruction.

“I enjoyed delivering the program to the students here at the career center because they really seemed interested and took to heart what we discussed,” Hinzman said. Hinzman also encouraged the youth to apply those leadership skills by growing and sharing them though volunteer work in their local community.

This event is not possible without our sponsors; we had 17 tee box sponsors and the Coshocton County Safety Council was our corporate sponsor. The course played well today and there was even a slight – very slight – breeze”.

Joe Douglass chaired the scramble format event, saying, “Hilltop Golf Course provided us with a great day and a wonderful catered meal. The steak was terrific”.
