Easton Corbin to perform Monday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Easton Corbin knew he wanted to be a country singer well before he learned how to play guitar. “One of my earliest memories is from when I was three or four,” he remembers. “I was sitting between my parents in the car and a song came on the radio—it was Mel McDaniel’s ‘Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On’. I began using the gearshift as my microphone. The desire has always been there.” Born and raised in rural Gilchrist County, Fla., Easton spent much of his time on his grandparent’s cattle farm after his parents divorced when he was young. “I lived a mile from the Suwannee River,” he says. “I grew up fishing on it and I loved to work on the farm. Every weekend, that’s where I’d be.” A member of FFA and 4-H, Easton showed cattle at the local livestock fair. Growing up in the smallest county in the state on farmland nestled between two small towns had its advantages. “It’s a close community,” he says. “Everybody knows everybody.

“There’s no Walmart there,” he says. “There was a Hardee’s, but it closed. That was the only franchise fast food place in the county. Trenton has a red light; Bell has a blinking light. It’s a great place.” While no one in his family played a musical instrument, music was a big part of his upbringing. “My grandparents liked to watch the Opry,” Easton remembers.

“We’d start Saturday night off with ‘Hee Haw’ and then ‘Opry Backstage’ and then ‘Opry Live’.” It was also at his grandparent’s house that he discovered a record player and his father and aunts’ left-behind records in a front room. “I’d go in there and play those records for hours,” he says. When Easton was 15 years old he began taking guitar lessons from Pee Wee Melton, a local musician who had at one time played on sessions in Nashville. “He was a great mentor,” Easton says. “He was a great player and a great teacher. He was a really big influence on me.” Every day when he got home from school, Easton would practice guitar for hours, sometimes until his fingers were raw, then help his grandfather around the farm. Encouraged by Melton, Easton began playing lead guitar in a local band. “I’d always wanted to play and sing, but up until that time I never really did do it in public,” he

says. “We’d play school functions and parties. We were too young to play bars, but we played everything else.” An impromptu audition at a local music store led to a slot on the Suwannee River Jam, a nearby festival that attracts thousands of people and national touring acts. “It was just me and a guitar in front of a 40-acre field full of people,” Easton remembers. “It was great.” Soon he was opening for other national acts when they played the area, including Janie Fricke and Mel McDaniel, the man whose song Easton had performed in the car years earlier. After earning a business degree through the College of Agriculture at the University of Florida, Easton took two important steps. “My wife and I got married on September 2, 2006, and on October 14 we moved to Nashville,” he says. “I always knew I wanted to move up here. There was never any question about it. I didn’t want to wake up one day and wish I would have tried it, but I had to get my education first so I had something to fall back on.” Easton, who had been making regular trips to Nashville to perform at writer’s nights, took a day job at a local Ace Hardware and his wife found a job at a doctor’s office. When a distant cousin, also a professor of music management at the University of Montana, heard Easton’s music, he asked if he could send it to some of his Nashville contacts. label. Easton, whose musical influences include George Jones, Merle Haggard, George Strait and Keith Whitley, found a kindred spirit in producer Carson Chamberlain, who years earlier had toured with Whitley as his steel guitar player and bandleader. “We really hit it off,” Easton says. “I love traditional music and he does too. I knew he was the producer for me.”

“I’m still working and developing as a writer, but I was fortunate enough to get some songs on the album,” Easton says, perhaps more humble than he needs to be. “The Way Love Looks,” which Easton co-wrote with Chamberlain and Sanders, is a love song pure and simple. “It’s just a fun upbeat song,” Easton says. “I love the line ‘when you beg and plead to go fishing with me and I have to bait your hook,’ because that’s what happens when I take my wife fishing.” Tony Lane, David Lee and Johnny Park wrote “Roll With It,” which speaks to the important things in life like sunsets and pickup trucks. “I love that one,” Easton says. “I can imagine listening to it just floatin’ down the river on the boat on a Saturday.” The tender “I Can’t Love You Back,” written by Chamberlain, Clint Daniels and Jeff Hyde, has a universal message of loss. “It can mean different things for different people,” Easton says. “She could have died, she could have left him—people can interpret it the way they feel.” Now that his life long dream is upon him, Easton says he’s ready. “I just want to make great country music,” he says. “Just the opportunity to play music for a living is a great thing. I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to do what I’m doing now.”

The two men began working in earnest. “We worked our butts off trying to find the right songs,” Easton says. The result is an overthe-top album that includes cuts from Nashville’s top songwriters, including Mark D. Sanders, Wynn Varble, Tony Lane and David Lee, among others. Like his heroes Strait and Whitley, Easton is unapologetically country. His songs, while rooted in the present, call to mind simpler times when the back porch was where folks gathered to network. Steel guitars and fiddles are as much a part of his sound as his baritone drawl. First single, “A Little More Country Than That,” which was written by Rory Feek, Don Poythress and Varble, paints a picture of rural life that speaks to Easton’s small town sensibilities. “Even though I didn’t write it, this song identifies who I am,” he says. “It shows character and that’s important where I’m from. You learn to say ‘yes, ma’am’ and ‘no, sir,’ and to open the door for the ladies.” Among the songs included on the album are three Easton co-wrote with Chamberlain and Sanders during a trip to Colorado. “When I came to Nashville I realized how important it was to write songs,” Easton says. “The opportunity to sit in a room with experienced songwriters and learn their craft has helped me become a better writer.

Fair Memories: A brief history of the Coshocton County Fair

History of the Fair

Dan Markley, local historian and member of the Coshocton County Fair Board, sat down with the Beacon to share some of his knowledge about the history of our county fair. Markley has done years of research on the fair, going as far back as the very first fair in 1851. He has published a book containing all the information that he has found over the years in his book, “Coshocton County Fair: 150 Years: 1851-2001”. In 1835, the state enacted a law that said all counties in the state were to have an annual county fair. From that date until 1844, all was quiet. In that year, Markley found an ad in the Coshocton Democrat that said the Coshocton County Agricultural Society was to have a meeting on Oct. 25 at the farm of John Burt. The farmers of the county were encouraged to bring their prized farm animals and utensils. The event turned out to be somewhat of a success, however, it was agreed that more people in

depended on the preference of the current president. The rides were also much different. Nowadays, when we think of the county fair, most of us think of the variety of rides we enjoy so much. In the early days, there were only three rides: the Ferris wheel, swing sets, and a merry-go-round, and a fair was considered lucky if they had all three. They were also powered by steam. People perceived the fair much differently in the early days too. It was considered to be a social event and visitors arrived in their Sunday best, stayed all day, viewed the livestock, and ate a homemade

the county might have wanted to attend. There were no other records after 1844 until 1850 when the farmers including Mr. Burt started making progress on having a county-wide fair. The first county fair was in 1851 and took place in East Jacobsport, adjacent to modern day Plainfield. The fair was only here one year and then moved to the Courtsquare where they had their horse racing in their buggies on Canal Lewisville Road. After traveling to the Himebaugh property and the five points, the Coshocton County Fair moved to its current home on Kenilworth Avenue. The fair back then was much different than it is now. For one thing, the president of the fair board decided when the fair would be. Other members of the fair board had no say and neither did the people of the county. Because of this, some years the fair would be in the middle of September while others would be the last week of October. It all

book on eBay. After bidding on the book, they took the highest bid and the book journeyed all the way from Alabama to make its trip back home and is now back where it belongs in the fair board office. Last but certainly not least, and maybe the most unusual, was an e-mail sent to Linda White, secretary of the fair board. A man contacted her just this year and said he had something he wanted to give them, but wouldn’t give it to them if they were going to sell it. White assured the man that they would not sell it and the man graciously sent the item to them. When they received it, they found it was an 1870 admission ticket to the Coshocton County Fair. It said, “Admit carriage and driver”. The ticket had come all the way from Idaho. The man explained that he had been at a garage sale this summer and saw a wallet for

75 cents that he really liked. After buying the wallet, he began looking through it and found this historic ticket tucked deep inside the folds. This ticket will be on display this year at the fair. Another historic display that will be at the fair this year comes from the antique tractor building. That building used to be used by the Battery F of the Cavalry to store their mules. They used to train at the fairgrounds and practice target shooting upstairs. Markley has some artifacts from that time that he will display at the fair this year. If you’re interested in the incredible history of the Coshocton County Fair, visit the fair board office and sift through Markley’s book. There are many fascinating stories, some of which are spread throughout this Fair Program, and much more history to be discovered.

year of the fair. She had purchased a Benton Clark painting at a sale and taken it home to hang on her wall. One day while her children were playing, they accidently knocked it off the wall and busted the picture. When she picked it up, she discovered the plow award from the 1852 Coshocton County Fair behind the frame. A copy of it now hangs in the Fair Board office. Three years ago, Markley received a call from Margaret Lowe. She informed him that she had found something on eBay that he might be interested in. While the fair board had all of the minute books from their meetings dating back to the second fair, years ago, they had loaned out the first one from 1851 and had never got it back. Lowe had found that very

People from other states used to be able to enter their livestock and homemade products in the Coshocton County Fair. They would write to the fair board and inform them that they wanted to submit something in the county fair. Once the goods were shipped, the fair board would have to go down to the train station, pick up the goods, enter them in the fair, judge them, care for them and then ship them back. In the last few years, three major events have brought some of the fair’s history back to life for Markley and he was kind enough to share them with us. Last year, a woman came to the fair board office and brought an award, or diploma, for a set of plows that was dated 1852, the second

Wishing Coshocton County a “Happy Fair!” -Dr. Yandam

Coshocton County fair Program

The story goes that little Shotgun Red was found in a Minnesota hobby shop by Steve Hall in 1980. (If you ask Shotgun, he might tell the tale vice versa!) Whichever you believe, Red became the emcee for Steve’s band. From there, the group’s path to stardom began. After winning a “Battle of the Bands” contest in 1982, the band traveled to Nashville for the final competition. While in Music City, Steve and Red “crashed” country broadcast legend Ralph Emery’s morning show. Ralph instantly took a liking to the quick witted Shotgun Red and asked him (with his right hand man, Steve, of course,) to come back to Nashville and be a guest with him on TNN’s new flagship series, “Nashville Now!” The rest is history. Shotgun Red was a regular member of the “Nashville Now!” cast for over ten years. He also appeared for eight years on one

Traffic going north on 7th Street from Bank Street or Otsego Avenue will not be allowed to go through to the main Fair entrance. Traffic will be detoured west on Ash Street. As per past years policy, this reminder is for all County Junior and Senior Livestock exhibitors. Due to a lack of parking availability, all county exhibitors are to take their trailers home or to an off-sight location. As in past years, the lot across from Porteus Farms on Otsego Avenue will be available to trailer parking during the fair.

The Beacon

As in past years during the county fair, the city will return Kenilworth Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets, to one-way traffic beginning Friday, Oct. 1 - Thursday, Oct. 7. Traffic may only travel east on Kenilworth between 7th and 8th during that time period. “NO PARKING” signs will be erected to prohibit parking on that section of Kenilworth during the actual fair dates. This no-parking ban is to ease the flow of traffic of the big trucks hauling tractors, entertainment crews, etc., as they negotiate Kenilworth Avenue and make the turn into the 8th Street gate at the fairgrounds.
