Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m.

“Alzheimer’s just doesn’t affect the person diagnosed with it,” Compton said. “It affects their family, their friends and even their extended family.”

The walk and the t-shirts will raise funds to help the Alzheimer’s Association with research.

“An Alzheimer’s patient can look in the mirror and not know who is looking back,” Compton said.

Taylor was amazed by this thought.

“I can’t imagine not knowing who you are or who your family is,” she said. “I know a neighbor of mine has Alzheimer’s but I don’t personally know anyone who is impacted by it.

I just wanted to work on the designs because I love to help other people.”

The design selected for the t-shirts reads, “Ending Alzheimer’s One Step At A Time.”

“I wanted something catchy that people would look at and make them stop to realize that Alzheimer’s is this bad,” Taylor said.

The t-shirts are $12 each and are available by calling Sue Renner Miller at 622-6657 at Kids America or by stopping at the facility.

“I’m really proud of her (Kenzie),” Compton said. “I think she did an excellent job with the t-shirts.”

Those interested in participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Coshocton should contact Cindy Baker, Alzheimer’s Association Development Coordinator, at 330-650-0552.

Teams may also register online at http://act.alz. org/coshocton2012. Baker also can be contacted for tickets for a handmade, cherry wood wall clock that is being raffled off. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

“We are hoping to have a lot more individuals at this year’s walk,” Compton said. “There will be fun activities, drinks, snacks and a chance to raise awareness.”

One of the recruiters at the fair was Coshocton High School graduate Katie – Elizabeth Brown.

She graduated from Coshocton in 2007 and in 2011 graduated from Walsh University in North Canton, where she is now an admissions counselor.

She encourages students to make sure they visit the schools they are interested in, that they look into schools of different sizes and start the financial aid process early.

“Being from Coshocton I also want to inform kids from this area and other small towns that you can be comfortable going away to school and that it can give you a whole new perspective on life,” she said.

Two hundred and thirty-two students registered to attend the college fair and were from five different counties and 12 different area high schools. Crilow also said 250 parents accompanied the students for a total attendance of 482.

COSHOCTON – Olivia Bosson found the Oct. 8, college fair at the Coshocton County Career Center to be a useful tool in her search for a school.

“There were a few here that I knew I wanted to look at and I found some extras that were interesting,” she said. “It was helpful getting their (the recruiters) opinions.”

The college fair was organized by Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. and sponsored by the Coshocton Kiwanis, who provided a grant for the event.

According to Brian Crilow, director/ advisor of Coshocton C.A.R.E.S., 60 colleges, universities, technical and trade schools from five different states attended the event with the University of Kentucky traveling the farthest.

“It was a good chance for her (Olivia) to ask questions like how big the campuses and classes are and how long of a walk it is across campus,” said Dan Bosson, Olivia’s father. Her mother, Amy Bosson, also attend the college fair.

Olivia, a senior at Coshocton High School, is undecided on her major, but knows she wants a school with good housing and price she and her family can afford.

“I’m the first kid going to college,” Olivia said.

Another one of the students gathering information on higher education was Jessica McCoun, a junior at Ridgewood High School.

“I want to be a nurse and I’m also looking at sports because I do cross country and track,” she said.

Jessica was accompanied by her mother Shawna McCoun.

Dear Editor, After reviewing the front page article in the Sunday edition of The Tribune, regarding the Probate/Juvenile Court Judge’s race, I was perplexed to see that one of the candidates felt there was a need for effective and affordable drug treatment and rehabilitation in Coshocton County.

I wanted to take a moment to clarify that Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices (CBHC) has been actively offering addictions treatment to local residents since 1972. We see an average of approximately 250 clients each year. Our programs are certified through the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services and our clinical staff is comprised of degreed and certified counselors, two of which are independently licensed. We offer evidence-based treatment and we even provide prevention education in our schools that is based on “best-practice” models.

Coshocton County is fortunate to be funded by local, state and federal funding, allowing us to offer a sliding-fee scale to Coshocton County residents! An example of the affordability that this offers is as follows: A family of 4, making $23,000 per year only pays 5% of the cost of their treatment. That makes the cost of individual and/or group treatment less than $5 per visit. Each drug screen would cost a family less than $5 – regardless of the age of the patient. In my mind, I find the cost of treatment VERY affordable.

The more the family makes and a lesser number of dependents effects how much a person will owe for treatment. However, regardless of income, we have always made payment plans available. As long as a family or individual is willing to work with us, we are more than happy to work with them. Families who have a Medicaid card actually receive services at no cost to them.

CBHC offers treatment by self-referral, or by referrals from other entities, including schools, employers and/or courts. CBHC had the pleasure of working with Judge Pierce over the past decade, as the juvenile drug court for Coshocton County was formed. Many entities were at the table, including schools, the court, treatment providers and others. Our goal was to provide wrap-around services to those juveniles who were afflicted by drug and alcohol use.

CBHC also serves on the Intensive Services Probation (ISP) program through Coshocton Municipal Court. This program also offers wraparound services, including the court, mental health providers, drug and alcohol counselors, employers, family members and others who encourage recovery in their lives. Does everyone who enters the door find recovery?

No. However, our success rates are as similar to other treatment centers, including prestigious facilities, such as the Betty Ford Clinic. Recidivism rates are high in the addictions field – it’s part of the process of recovery.

In short, is addiction treatment in Coshocton County effective and affordable to Coshocton County residents? I am proud to be able to say that it is.

COSHOCTON – The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is pleased to present the special exhibit, Appointments Recommended 622-4947 “Traces of Time, Traces of Glory: Native American Pre-historic Tools & Points”. This exhibit Walk-ins Welcome • Behind Coshocton Bowling Alley features hundreds of artifacts found in Coshocton and adjacent counties, from blades, points and AND DOWN-HOME HOSPITALITY drills to axes, bannerstones and celts. The exhibit will be on display Oct. 20 through Jan. 30, 2013.

It is always a thrill to discover remnants of cultures past. Although landowners, farmers and excavators unearth these beautifully crafted tools while working, most are found by amateur archaeologists who doggedly walk newly-plowed fields or poke around flint outcroppings. Most often, these artifacts find their home in private collections, the source of the museum’s exhibit.

Portions of two such private collections, donated to the museum in the 1980s, will be included in the exhibit. Doctors Norman L. Wright and W. R. Agricola, local physicians, collected with passion and scientific exactitude. They had accumulated enough material culture and data for a lifetime of study.

Subsequently, as museum property, their artifacts have been examined by professional archaeologists, contributing to our understanding of Ohio’s prehistory.

The earliest human culture that has been discovered in Ohio so far is the Clovis culture (9500 to 8000 B.C.) Hunters and gatherers were drawn to places like Coshocton County because of navigable rivers and ample flora for and fauna. WARSAW – Ruby Jane Fry, 91, of Warsaw died Saturday, October 7, 2012 at Autumn Extended Care.

She was born May 19, 1921 in Cooperdale to the late William Henry and Gladys Ora (Dobson) Fry. Ruby was a homemaker. She was a member of the Chalfant Church, Walhonding Grange, & the Wakatomika Homemakers Club. She was a past matron of the Wakatomika OES and a 4-H advisor for 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Charles) Radabaugh of Warsaw.

Her son, Ernest Jr. (Mary) Fry of Dresden. Two grandsons and two great grandchildren.

sisters, Wanda E. Geog and Cora M. Schweitzer, and a brother, Robert Q. Baker, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Fry, whom she married Feb. 15, 1944, he died Nov. 7, 1995.

There were no calling hours. Graveside services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Valley View Cemetery in Warsaw.

The Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw handled the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Lane leaves RHS girls’ golf with big shoes to fill

WEST LAFAYETTE – Paige Lane has left the Ridgewood High School Girls’ Golf Team with big shoes to fill.

The senior has been with the team since it started three years ago and has the honor of being the only girl to make it to the district golf tournament.

“Last year I did what I wanted to and made it to districts,” she said. “This year I expected to make it. I also had hoped to go to state, but I ended up tying for eighth.”

The team has not had a winning season, but as an individual, Lane has been very successful.

“I’m the number one girl, but it’s because I put a lot of time into it,” she said. “I believe we have at least one other girl on the team who has the drive to make it to state and attempt to beat my goals.”

Lane plans on continuing her golfing career at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania.

“In my search I wanted a D III school so I would be guaranteed a spot on the golf team and Waynesburg had that,” she said. “When I walked on the campus I also felt right at home. I knew I was going to fit in and be fine. I’m ready to spread my wings and head to Pennsylvania.”

Lane is ready to move on, but she plans to take with her many memories from her golfing days at Ridgewood.

“I got to meet a lot of people from other teams because with golf you actually get to interact with the people you are playing against,” she said. “I also enjoyed really getting to know my coach (Craig ReVeil) and teach the team the etiquette of the game. We also had our nice share of laughs.”

Lane also wishes next year’s team nothing but good luck and had a few words of wisdom for them.

“You have to put work into golf to get to where I’ve been,” she said. “Set your goals high and work to achieve them.”

Jeff Thorpe joins Miller Funeral Home

COSHOCTON – Jeff Thorpe has joined The Miller Funeral Home staff, located on Main October 19th, 1952 Street in Coshocton.

The leaves are starting to fall, the days are Jeff Thorpe moved to Coshocton in 1980 getting colder, and everyone knows what from Atchison, KS, where he was an Auto that means. It’s time for spooks, witches, Tech Graduate. He has works at AK Steel for and candy corn, and the Coshocton Jaycees 19 years, and also owns and operates Thorpe’s were planning their annual Halloween gala Automotive. He has been a 19-year member of for Halloween night, Oct. 31. The Jaycees the Elks Lodge. Jeff has been married to Cindi planned a party every year for the young for 29 years, and they have raised three sons, people to keep them out of mischief on Cody, Tyler, and Tucker, and two step sons Halloween night, as well as to let them have some good, clean fun. They also planned a Shawn and Shane Grant. In his spare time, Jeff parade where $5 would go to the best costume. enjoys fishing and hunting.

There would also be a concession stand and all money would go to help refurbish toys for needy children for the next big holiday that kids loved, Christmas.

October 17th, 1972 Seventeen-year-old sophomore, Jeff Adams of Coshocton, had recently won a $25 savings bond presented to him by Robert Passmore, County Veteran’s Service Officer. Adams was the county winner in a national poster contest urging businesses to hire their local veterans returning from war. Adams’ poster featured an up-close drawing of a soldier and said, “Throw Some Light on His Future. Hire The Vet”. Adams went on to place third in a 23 county district competition and was headed to state finals. He had the chance to win a $1500 national scholarship.

1982

October 17th, 1982 The Coshocton Redskins golf team had just returned to town after claiming their third state title in history. The team returned victorious amid sirens blaring and cheers from awaiting fans. Coshocton turned in a team score of 673, three shots better than runner-up Canton Central Catholic. Coach Craig Cramer said the game was suspenseful right up until the very end and that the team felt great knowing it was the best team in Class AA in Ohio.

Kelly Maxwell fired an 80-77-157 total to claim medalist honor. Maxwell brushed aside much of the personal glory, emphasizing the importance of teamwork.

October 18th, 1962 Sports car fans in Coshocton County were anxiously awaiting the New Philadelphia Quarter Milers’ Safety Club’s car show they were to sponsor at the Coshocton County fairgrounds. This two-day event displayed cars in 11 categories and trophies were presented to the first and second place in each category. The show would feature cars with radical changes such as elaborate paint jobs and restored antiques. The categories to be on display were: roadsters, coupes, custom cars, convertibles, semi-extensive bodywork, full custom, sports cars, restored, competition, and motorcycles.

COSHOCTON - The Ohio Department of Aging celebrates outstanding older Ohioans for their achievements and contributions to others, for the roles they play in their communities, state and nation, and for what they do to promote productive and enjoyable lives. Since 1978, more than 350 individuals have been inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for contributions toward the benefit of humankind.

The Ohio Department of Aging is currently accepting nominations for this honor. Nominees must be age 60 or older and a native-born Ohioan or a resident of Ohio for the last ten years, they must be outstanding in service to mankind through leadership, innovation, motivation and contribution and set an example for all Ohioans by leading lives not defined by age or barriers.

They will be evaluated by a committee using a formal rating system on the impact of their current contributions, or a continuation of contributions begun before age 60, in areas of endeavor including, but not limited to arts/literature, business/technology, education, health/fitness, public service/volunteerism, science/medicine or other, and the highest-rated nominees will be honored. Posthumous nominations will be accepted; however, self-nominations will not be accepted.

FRESNO - The harvest has long been a time of celebration. Harvest marks the end of a season with the hard physical labor of bringing in the corps, and with most of the canning and preserving done for the coming winter months ahead, it is truly a time to celebrate.

Actually our modern school year calendar is set up around the harvest: September through June. This was so that every able-bodied person, young and old alike, would be available to help bring in the harvest. The elderly were highly regarded for their wisdom during the harvest, having contributed many years of labor; it was now their knowledge and wisdom that was sought after. Before there was easy access to publications, and books were a luxury for the rich, knowledge was passed down from one generation to the next by word of mouth. If an elder passed and their knowledge of butchering, harvesting, preparation and preserving was not handed down, it could very well mean the Homemade Cookies, Tomatoes, Peppers. Lucky for us, time and technology have advanced and we don’t have to rely on greatgranddad to teach us how to thrash wheat using a team of oxen. The word “harvest” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “haerfest” which translated means “autumn”. The once celebrated holiday of Lammas, also known as “Loaf Day”, was a harvest celebration of the first gathering of wheat. Entire communities would bake loaves of bread from this first wheat and give to local churches for communion to show their gratitude for a good harvest. Of course, ones thoughts turn to the widely celebrated holiday of Thanksgiving as a national day of thanks. However, not only was the first Thanksgiving a celebration of the harvest, but a union of two different cultures as well. It was and still is a time to be grateful of nature’s abundance to our tables.

Fall Harvest Cake 1 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. brown sugar 2 t. cinnamon 2 t. baking soda 1/2 t. salt 1/4 t. nutmeg 1/4 t. grd. ginger 1 c. oil 1/2 t. vanilla 4 fresh brown eggs 2 c. flour 15 oz. can pumpkin 1 large fresh apple cored, peeled & chopped 1/2 c. chopped pecans Mix first 10 ingredients together; add flour, 1/2 cup at a time. Blend in pumpkin; fold in apples and nuts. Pour into greased and floured Bundt pan or tube pan; bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour or until knife inserted comes out clean.

Cool on wire rack. Frost when cool if desired or dust with powdered sugar. Wonderful served with a cup of hot mulled cider!

WARSAW - Eight local chili contestants faced off last Saturday, Oct. 13 at River View Park during the annual Parktoberfest, sponsored by Hasseman Marketing, William Todd Drown, Northpointe Dental, L.W. Randles Cheese, Walhonding Valley Fire District, and Fischer Funeral Home.

“All benefits go to the park,” said Jesse Fischer, Park Board President.

“It’s what we always do, just trying to maintain the park.”

Admission to Parktoberfest was free with a $5 charge for all-you-caneat chili. The Park Board also supplied beer, soft drinks, brats, and hot dogs. Each chili entry was judged this year by three judges, Jerry Funk, Warsaw Village Councilman; Peggy Wilson of Peggy Sue’s Steak and Ribs; and Josh from the SportZone. Cash prizes were awarded to the People’s Choice and the Judge’s Champion.

“The best thing to do is try a couple at a time and then try a couple more,” said Becky Prosek, who attended the event. “I just think this is a really fun fall thing to do. It’s a very fun event.”

Debra Richards received first place in the People’s Choice Awards and Adam Fischer took first place in Judge’s Choice. Fischer was also runner-up for the People’s Choice award and Kathy Snyder was runner up for Judge’s Choice.

“The focus of my chili is small family farms and most of the ingredients in my chili comes from small family farms in Ohio,” said Richards.

Brian Kirker also entered his famous chili in the contest.

“I came up here last year and checked it out and thought it would be fun to do,” he said. “Everyone tells me I make good chili, so I thought I’d come and try it.”

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Senior Center hosted the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Luncheon today, Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Noon. Pat Shryock, county coordinator, introduced Jamie ThomasWilliams, director, and the board members. Don Lain, pastor at Coshocton Nazarene Church, led the invocation. RSVP provided a meal of chicken, baked potatoes, vegetables, dessert, and roll.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program sends volunteers out into the community to non-profit organizations to help where there is need.

The RSVP members work in schools as tutors, the museums, libraries, just to name a few.

“I feel that the volunteers are a valued asset in the community,” said Shryock. “I don’t know what the community would do without them.”

After the meal, five-year, 10-year, 15-year, and 20-year members were recognized with a certificate.

Five-year members are: Bess Van Atta, Penny Egler, Michele Fetters, Don McMorris, Mary Lou Babcock, Dorothy Kent, Danny Lamp, Ruth Ann Richissin, Joyce Sees, and Pat Streets.

Ten-year members are Cindy Lapp and Phyllis Knuth. The 15-year member recognized was Bob Fetters. Twenty-year members are Irwin Gibson and Jo Gibson.

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office received a $29,083.24 grant Oct. 8 that will be used to increase traffic safety on Coshocton County’s roadways.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Office of Criminal Justice Services are tailored to help law enforcement agencies with their traffic enforcement.

The number of fatal crashes went up this year in Coshocton County, so the need to step up enforcement is evident.

The grant is available for law enforcement agencies that have more than two traffic-related fatalities per year for three years.

Featured musician is Charlie Berwinkle from Dover, Ohio. Charlie has been a professional guitarist and teacher for over forty years. Specializing in music to relax by, his styles include classical and jazz and he also performed in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in 1999. He has studied with a contemporary of Segovia, world-renowned classical guitarist and with a renowned orchestra guitarist in Pittsburgh.

An October special will also feature Scott Craig Mooney reciting his poem, The Haven.

DICKERSON WINFIELD, KS - Each year at the annual Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival, the MidEast Regional Championships for competitors on the mountain dulcimer and the hammered dulcimer are held. In 2011, Sarah Morgan won the mountain dulcimer competition; in 2012, Matthew Dickerson won the hammered dulcimer competition.

The Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival committee is pleased to announce that these two recent winners of the Mid-East Regional Championships have gone on to win this year’s

Walnut Valley International Championships in Winfield, KS the weekend of Sept. 14 - 16.

Matthew Dickerson of Dayton, winner of the 2012 Mid-East Regional Hammered Dulcimer Championship, won the National Championship on the hammered dulcimer. The Hammered Dulcimer Mid-East Regional Championship at the Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival in June 2012 was sponsored by Frontier Power. Sarah Morgan, who lives in Tennessee, winner of the 2011 Mid-East Regional Mountain Dulcimer Championship in Coshocton, won the National Championship on the mountain dulcimer.

Matthew started playing the hammered dulcimer six years ago at age 15 when he had completed making one from an old piano. He also plays the guitar, penny whistle, flute, and piano. He is looking forward to building a career in music and is putting together his first album.

Sarah started her music journey at age seven and has come to focus on traditional and folk music over the years, incorporating the rich musical heritage of the area where she lives. She released her first album in 2010, has performed at numerous festivals, and is an enthusiastic teacher, sharing the joy of the dulcimer.

Sarah and Matthew will both be featured at the next Coshocton Dulcimer Days festival, June 14 -16, 2013, as performers and instructors.

The Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival has been in Coshocton for the past 38 years.

The festival, which is in Roscoe Village with the support of the Roscoe Village Foundation, Roscoe Village Business Association and COTC, features performances, workshops, competitions, and jamming sessions.

year for the Mid-East Regional Championships on hammered dulcimer and mountain dulcimer.

The winner of the regional competition is then eligible to compete in the national competition.

The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS, is the home of international championships on autoharp, finger style guitar, mountain dulcimer, flat pick guitar, banjo, and hammered dulcimer as well as national championships on the mandolin and old time fiddle. The festival has been each year on the third weekend in September for the past 41 years.

COSHOCTON - Ten recipients in a six-county region were honored by receiving the 2012 Friend of Recovery award in Muskingum County on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Two Coshocton County residents were among the honorees, acknowledging their work in support and

Crystal Kiser, social worker at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, was acknowledged for her service as a liaison between the hospital and local drug council and mental health entities, making the referrals more comfortable and inviting to the patient.

Kiser has served on the Coshocton County Suicide Prevention Coalition since its inception and continues to serve on that committee to help change lives. She has a sincere commitment to reach those in the community who are struggling

and give them hope and a plan of action. She resides in Coshocton with her husband, Matt and their two children.

The second local award went to John Turley, human services student at COTC. Turley has been instrumental in helping others find recovery by his selflessness to reach out to others who are struggling to find a new life in recovery. Turley has been on COTC’s President’s List for the past three quarters and is currently interning at Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices.

The awardees were nominated by local Coshocton County residents for their tireless commitment to those who are in search of recovery. This award is sponsored by the Mental Health & Recovery Services Board, serving Coshocton, Guernsey, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble and Perry counties. 43rd annual Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival coming up this weekend CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON - There’s something special food. Just a few delectable offerings you’ll find include smoked turkey legs, cinnamonroasted nuts, apple butter burgers, kettle corn and hot apple fritters. Some fun additions to the festivities are the gas-powered John Deere Hit & Miss ice cream maker, outdoor living demonstrations and a corn-shellin’ contest.

Roscoe Village is a restored canal town that flourished in the early 1800s as the Ohio and Erie Canal wound its way through Ohio, and many of the original buildings still stand along the original canal bed. Costumed interpreters spin the tales of the early 19th century, and a nearby canal boat offers a taste of life on the canal with its horse-drawn rides.

During the festival, Civil War: On the Home Front tours will be offered. Guests can visit the fully-staffed historical buildings at their leisure from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. On Friday and Saturday evening, the eerie candlelight tour, Spirit of Roscoe, will be offered at 7 p.m. This autumn

Perhaps it’s the splendor of the scenery in central Ohio’s rolling hills, the crisp mornings and warm afternoons and the smoky-sweet scent of homemade apple butter simmering over an open fire that combine to make the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in Historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton synonymous with fall. Now in its 43rd year, the Apple Butter Stirrin’ has attracted crowds of all ages to their restored 1800s canal town to experience the sights, sounds and flavors of the season.

The three days of Apple Butter Stirrin’ officially begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, with the opening of the craft booth-lined street. The crafters and artisans offer unique handmade items including paintings, pottery, home and garden goods, and many other delightful finds.

Of course, no stroll through the festival would be complete without sampling the tempting

tour walks the guests through the historic village while telling the tales of the spirited folk who once made this quaint canal town their home. Reservations are recommended for the candlelight tour.

Throughout the weekend, younger visitors can enjoy the kids’ activity area complete with tin punching, portrait artists, various crafts and photo opportunities. An annual quilt raffle will be held for a chance to win a handmade quilt made by the Roscoe Village volunteer quilters.

All the weekend’s events are accented by musical entertainment with performances by traditional dulcimer players, bluegrass bands, gospel singers and country music artists.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 - 20, and 10 a.m. 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21.

Corn-shellin contest set at Apple Butter COSHOCTON - Roscoe Village will once again have the Corn Shellin’ contest at the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival. This family fun contest is enjoyed by kids of all ages. It may be tough on the fingers, but it doesn’t stop even the smallest contestant from shellin’ the corn off the cob. The winner is determined by the weight of the corn shelled from the cob. Bob Buxton has run the contest for the last two years and says, “It’s such a fun time watching the different way each participant goes about getting the corn off the cob!”

The Corn Shellin’ contest is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Main Stage.

What better way to get a new quilt than from the 43rd annual Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival Volunteer’s Quilt Raffle? Roscoe Village is very fortunate to have such dedicated Volunteer Quilters to keep this art alive.

The 2012 Roscoe Volunteer quilt is a Civil War Sampler inspired by a pattern by Toby Lischko. The sampler is created with 15 Civil War Era patterns with a 16th pattern used as a setting block. Five Roscoe Volunteer quilters have spent more than 300 hours in the piecing and quilting of this year’s quilt.

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Ohio State University Extension, Soil & Water Conservation District and Farm Service Agency will again sponsor a Drive-It-Yourself Fall Foliage and Farm Tour. The tour will be Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21 from noon - 5 p.m. in Coshocton County.

This year’s tour will highlight the northeast section of Coshocton County. The tour will continue to focus on the history of the area as well as provide the opportunity for participants to have an up-close experience of a variety of agricultural enterprises along the tour route.

The tour will begin with the first stop and map pickup at The Animal Boutique & Villas, located just off U.S. Route 36, three miles east of Coshocton across from the Super Wal-Mart.

Tour maps will be available at this first stop on Saturday between the hours of 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Sunday from noon - 3 p.m.

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk will be Saturday, Oct. 27, at Kids America, 1600 Otsego Ave. It is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Association care, support, and research programs. Community Calendar Family Ministry Program. All are welcome to a Wednesday evening ministry program for all ages at Grace United Methodist Church now through Dec. 5. The event begins with a meal at 5:30 followed

by Bible study. Children and youth will have crafts, drama, and creative music activities. A variety of other classes will be offered such as a quilt class, a knitting class, hearing impaired class, and an adult Bible Study. At Anchor Church. The Anchor Church in Zanesville will be having a holiday bazaar on Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. featuring unique crafts, creative arts,

Inviting all parents, grandparents, or caregivers who have children between the ages of infant to three years old for a play date every Wednesday morning from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene on Orange Street. Craft/Vendor Show

Water Safety. A Red Cross Water Safety class will be offered by Red Cross Authorized Provider One Stop CPR. The class will be at the Coshocton High School pool. Classes are 6 – 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until Oct. 18. The class is free. Call Bonnie or Sher at the Red Cross office at 622-0228 Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. for questions and to register. Register as soon as possible so books can be ordered. Water safety instructors volunteer in the summer to teach children how to swim either at the River View Community Pool or the Coshocton Aquatic Center. In order to keep Coshocton County Learn to Swim program alive, the county must have more water safety instructions.

Craft Show. Precious Treasures Learning and Child Care Center of the West Lafayette United Methodist Church will be hosting a craft/vendor show on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Table space is $25 and all participants are encouraged to provide a door prize. Lunch stand items will be available after 10 a.m. For more information or to reserve your space, call 545-6082.

Book Sale. The Coshocton County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will have its annual book sale Friday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Buehler’s Grocery store. Township Cemetery Books, Death Records 1867-1908 and Birth Records 1867-1909 for Coshocton County will be available for purchase.

Warsaw Lions Pancake Day. The annual Warsaw Lions Pancake Day will be Saturday, Oct. 20 from 7 a.m. – Noon at the Warsaw Fire Department. A requested donation of $5 is asked for those eight years and older and $3 for those under eight years old.

There will also be a bake sale by the Warsaw United Methodist Church.

Job and Family Services Chicken Dinner. The dinner will be Friday, Oct. 26, to help raise funds for next year’s children services levy. For $7 per dinner, you get a half seasoned and baked chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, pop/water and cookie. This event is being co-sponsored by Baker’s. You can pick up your dinner between 4 and 6 p.m. at the JFS alley (Pine & Seventh). To get tickets, call 295-7540 by the end of the day Friday, Oct. 19.

Bereavement Support Group Schedule. The Health Services will have a Bereavement Support Group for children ages 5 – 12 at the Coshocton office, located at 230 S. 4th St. The group will meet on from 4:30 – 6 p.m. on the following dates: Oct. 23, and Oct. 30.

Antique Power Association. The Coshocton County Antique Power Association will meet on the following Sundays in the Tractor Supply Building at 3 p.m.: Dec. 9. There will not be a meeting in November.

School Events Sports Parent Meeting. Coshocton High School Winter Sports Parent Meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. Coaches will have information/forms/schedules, etc. for parents of student athletes who are planning on participating in winter sports.

Hog Roast. There will be a hog roast Oct. 19 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. at the River View High School cafeteria.

Cost is $6. Menu includes pork, dressing noodles, coleslaw or potato salad, baked beans, roll, dessert, and beverage. The dinner is sponsored by the RV Athletic Boosters. The football team plays Rosecrans that night at 7 p.m.

Quarter Auction. The Coshocton Wrestling Boosters will be having a quarter auction on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. This will be located at Central School in the gym. A lunch stand and bake sale will be provided.

Bridge the GAP 5K. The Students Against Destructive Decisions, (SADD) will be having their first 5K on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. at Lake Park. The starting line-up will be at Shelter #4. Pre-registration cost is $20 for adults and $15 for kids. All of the proceeds will go toward funding the River View High School’s after school tutoring program, “GAP”. Participants can register online at the River View High School website.

Operation Evergreen provides Ohio trees to military units overseas

FRAZEYSBURG - American troops stationed throughout the world will celebrate the holidays with an Ohio-grown tree thanks to Operation Evergreen, an annual event of the Ohio Christmas Tree Association (OCTA).

In November, more than 100 trees will be donated by various Ohio Christmas tree growers and inspected by department nursery inspectors before being sent to soldiers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar and Kuwait.

COSHOCTON - Coshocton County OSU Extension will be offering Annie’s Project in early 2013. This is a six-week program designed to empower farm women to manage information systems used in critical decision making processes and to build local networks throughout the state. The target audience is farm women with a passion for business and involvement.

Annie’s Project is named after the mother of a University of Illinois Extension agent. Annie spent her lifetime learning how to be an involved business partner with her farm husband.

Together they did great things, but it wasn’t easy. This is Annie’s project – to take her life’s experiences and share it with farm women living and working in a complex, dynamic, evolving business environment.

Farm women will receive training in five areas of risk management: Financial, marketing, production, legal/institutional and human resources.

This women’s empowerment program will be offered in six sessions in 2013 beginning on Tuesday, January 29 and continuing through Tuesday, March 5. There will be a meal starting at 5:40 p.m. for each session, and the program will run from 6 - 9 p.m.

The individual participant cost is set statewide by OSU Extension at $95, but thanks to generous contributions of local sponsors, the

Appy’s Auction House getting ready for business COSHOCTON – Are you looking for a good deal on furniture? If so, you will want to mark Saturday, Dec. 1 on your calendar.

Appy’s Auction House will host its first auction from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in its building at 125 S. Fourth St. “We will have one the first Saturday of every month and they won’t take too much of people’s time,” said Bill Appis. “They will be fast auctions.”

Appis plans to use the front of the building to sell coins and jewelry and his brother Mark also will sell t-shirts for what Appis called “dirt cheap” prices. Plans also are being made to have 50/50 drawings, giveaways, the game Bingo Bonus and a food stand at each auction.

“Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church will do the food and the money will go to the homeless shelter,” Appis said. “We also plan to give money from our drawings to organizations like the animal shelter and Mark Granger’s church.”

Appis also is looking for people to do consignments.

Rotary Club awards scholarships

“Clean up your garage and get rid of stuff,” he said. “We’ll even come pick it up. I think our commission rates are great.”

Appy’s Auction House gets 30 percent if they pick up your items, but only 25 percent if you bring them in and set up your own table.

“Whatever people bring in we will sell for them,” Appis said. “We just ask that they are clean when we pick them up.”

Those interested in having items picked up can call 740-502-3792, or stop by Appis’ other business Coshocton Furniture at 341 Main St. The store is open from 9 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“We already have plenty of stuff and think this will be a spark for the town,” he said. “We are pretty much full for the auction. We have beds, tables, couches, glassware and I hope to eventually get some guns.”

Running the auction will be auctioneer Zach Ogle.

“He’s young, energetic and fun,” Appis said. “I think you have to have that at an auction. We are excited to have his young blood in our new place.”

Ogle, who received his auctioneer license in 2004, is excited for the opportunity “I like the interaction you have with people at auctions,” he said. “I’ve been going to them for well over 20 years. You get to socialize, catch up with people and buy things.”

Appy’s Auction House also offers plenty of parking and the use of U-Hauls if you need help getting your items home. Appis also said there is plenty of seating, but people are welcome to bring their own chairs.

“Bill has a lot of great ideas,” Zach said. “I’m looking forward to incorporating them into the auction and having a fun time.”

CAMBRIDGE - Ohio State University Extension is hosting, Shale and You: A Workshop for Landowners and Communities, from 1 to 6 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center, 7033 Glenn Highway in Cambridge.

The workshop will include a wide variety of presentations by OSU educators and specialists as well as informational booths to ask specific questions one on one. Topics include development updates, community and strategic planning, taxes, pipeline easements and a panel of landowners who have dealt with shale development directly.

The goal of the afternoon is to provide relevant information to assist landowners and community leaders with decision making.
