COSHOCTON – Hundreds of people from Coshocton County have attended New Pointe Community Church in Dover at least once. When church officials noticed that trend they started looking into offering services in the county. After hosting a Bible study here and a monthly large group meeting, they decided to make plans for services in Coshocton. “We are very certain God wants us to reach people and we are listening to what he’s saying about that and letting him guide us,” said John Bunn, who has been with the church for nine years and is transitioning to the campus pastor for Coshocton. The church currently has campuses in Dover, Canton, and Millersburg. Plans are to have 10 campuses by the end of the decade. “Our approach is invest and invite,” Bunn said. “We invest in people and ask them to invite their family and friends. It’s tough to do that when people are making a 40 minute drive to church so we start looking at where people are coming from. That opens up opportunities for us to connect with people from different areas.” Bunn promises that those who attend the church will have a great experience. “You won’t be weirded out and you won’t have to worry about when to stand up or sit down,” he said. The first service is tentatively set for Jan. 6, 2013, at the Coshocton County Career Center. “For right now we are going to be portable and come in and out every Sunday,” Bunn said. “The career center has been great to work with. We are going to set it up and make it look like the church as much as we can.” According to Bunn the church already has a strong following in the area. “We are going to keep building our core with the goal of having our own building one day,” he said. Services will be energetic, high tech and include music that has more of a rock style. “We also will speak your language,” Bunn said. “Services deal with practical, relevant,

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County Commissioners met Wednesday, Oct. 17 for their bi-weekly meeting. After the Pledge of Allegiance was said, the commissioners discussed whether to change their sick leave and vacation policy. Currently, employees are paid based on half an hour for sick leave and quarter hour for vacation. There was a discussion whether or not to amend the personal policy manual to quarter hour sick leave. Commissioners decided to adopt the changes once at a later date within the next few weeks. Ike Riger, Supervisor of Building Maintenance discussed tree removal at Dr. Darr’s Animal Clinic, which is adjacent to countyowned property. Riger had been approached about the matter when he went to prune the trees. It was then suggested that the trees be removed from the property completely in case they fall and damage the clinic or the house. They also want to put in a solar panel and have concerns that the trees may fall on the solar panel. Forty to 50 trees would be removed. The commissioners argued that the trees were not hanging over the clinic or the house and that they are not in danger of falling. Commissioners said they needed to personally look into the matter before any decision was made. Riger also said that four trees in the courtsquare are dying and should be removed. He also discussed the remodeling of the County Service Building, which is being remodeled by Apple Valley Landscaping. They then went into executive session. Ms. Gretchen Blazer from AEP discussed switching AEP products to lower the generation electricity portion of customers’ bills. The generation portion is the amount used to generate electricity and does not include transmission or distribution. The generation portion of the electric bill is about half of the bill. The customer’s bill under ‘Price to Compare’ will show how much customers pay per kilowatt hour. The PUCO website has all the different AEP products and prices listed for customers’ convenience. Blazer said that customers should be aware of the contract and whether or not there is a fixed rate. There is also a termination fee with the contract. Ms. Janette Donaker presented the Commissioners with the auditor’s bank

WEST LAFAYETTE – Dennis Cabot likes to carve whimsical houses and Tim Jackson likes to make caricatures. When they put their talents together they came up with plans for a quickcarve pumpkin house that were featured in “Woodcarving Illustrated.” The three page article with directions on how to make the houses was in the fall issue of the magazine. “We were at Artistry in Wood in Dayton and the people from the magazine were there,” Jackson said. “They saw the houses and asked if we’d do an article. We put it together and they edited it. It came out really nice and it’s exciting to see.”

It’s a good release.” Both Jackson and Cabot are members of the Coshocton County Woodcarvers group. “It (carving) is relaxing and it’s fun to get together with all the guys and have a good time,” Jackson said. The group has 25 active members and meets on Mondays at Jackson’s former store in West Lafayette. “Everyone is glad to share with you and there are no secrets,” Cabot said. “Tim also is nice enough to let us come in here and use his tools.” The pair has not ruled out the idea of trying to get another article published. “We are hoping to come up with another good project,” Cabot said. “They like original creations.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

1952

October 25th, 1952 Although they played to a small crowd, the Coshocton Redskins football team scored their first Central Ohio league victory of the season, defeating the Marietta Tigers with a score of 25-7. This was the Redskins second win of the season and moved them up out of the tie for the COL. The game had just begun when Paul Dober, who was back after two weeks absent, rushed 15 yards for the first score. The Redskins added two more touchdowns by halftime, one being a 79-yard dash by John L. Martin. Calvin Wagner, of the Tigers, scored in the last four seconds of the game, which was the lone Marietta score.

1962

October 28th, 1962 On Halloween night, local children knocked on doors, not asking for treats, but for spare change to give to UNICEF. The local UNICEF Drive was sponsored by the Council of Church Women and Sacred Heart Parish. In 1961, 262 children collected $481.24 locally for the UNICEF Foundation. In 1962, 14 local churches were participating in the local drive, which meant to replace, “Beggars Night” in the community. The children met at the participating churches that night with labeled milk cartons and ID tags. After the drive, churches had a party for the kids.

1972

October 24th, 1972 Mary M. Lowe of Fresno had not only recently been awarded as a winner by the Poets’ Study Club of Chicago, but had again been named a winner at thee Ohio Poetry Day in Columbus. She was presented with the first two awards and one honorable mention at the luncheon for her three poems, “Full Circle”, “Field Report”, and “Flannel Armor”. Guest speaker, John Williams Andrews, an editor from Connecticut, said that the first three lines in a poem determined whether or not it was a poem worth reading, a statement that Lowe must have took to heart as she added yet another award to her collection. She had been rewarded many times for her poems before.

1982

October 25th, 1982 Despite almost freezing temperatures, more than 2,000 spectators packed the stand at the River View High School to watch the first ever River View Invitational Marching Band Competition. Fifteen area high school bands competed and were judged on marching, maneuvering execution, music scores, and general effect of the show. River View was not eligible to compete for the judging since they hosted the event, but they had a superior rating, which qualified them for state. The grand champion trophy went to Cambridge, which also claimed the Most Outstanding music award. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE McCORMICK COSHOCTON – Lucille Clark learned the importance of dental health at a young age. “We didn’t have much growing up, but mom always made sure we got to the dentist to get our teeth cleaned,” she said. Clark, Dorothy Hall and Ralph Wisenburg were honored Oct. 16, as one of three 10 year members of the 80/20 Club at Coshocton Dentistry. The club is for patients of Brian Dunlap DDS and Patrick Laaper DDS who are 80-years-old and over and still have at least 20 of their natural teeth. “I think it (Coshocton Dentistry) is a great place to go,” Clark said. “He (Dr. Dunlap) is the best dentist I’ve ever found. I have a few missing teeth and if I had him my whole life I’d probably have them all.” There are 74 people on the Dental Champions list and 30 of them accepted the office’s invitation for a brunch celebration at Roberta’s Catering. “It’s delicious,” said Barbara Lucas, who was Clark’s guest. “I came last year too and I think it’s nice that they recognize them.” Joyce Brannon also is a member of the 80/20 Club. “I’ve been going to the dentist all my life and he (Dr. Dunlap) takes good care of all my teeth,” she said. Brannon’s guest at the brunch was her daughter Kay Gergley, who also is a patient at Coshocton Dentistry. “You have no problems getting in and everyone treats you great,” Gergley said. Dr. Dunlap borrowed the idea for the club from a dental practice in Florida. “It sounded like something fun to do and it just gets bigger every year,” he said. “This generation values keeping their teeth and having good general health.”

Laaper agreed that the members of the 80/20 Club are consistent with their checkups. “They see us on a regular basis and listen to our recommendations,” he said. “We like being able to recognize them and doing things to give back to our patients.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton Christian School volleyball team celebrated its four seniors Oct. 16, during the final home game of the season. Danielle Miller, Ashley Johnson, Carrie Carr and Arminta Coakley have each brought something special to the team this season. “Danielle is our captain and a leader on and off the court,” said Coach Amanda Hamilton. “She’s also our most athletic player.” Johnson brings a great attitude to the team and Carrie also helps keep the girls upbeat. “Ashley is very optimistic and Carrie is an all around good player who keeps us laughing with her craziness,” Hamilton said. Coakley is full of team spirit. “She’s our team cheerleader,” Hamilton said. “She’s the peppy one.” The girls were honored with gifts and also were escorted on the court by their parents. “I like pretty much everything about volleyball,” Carr said. “This has been a fun and memorable year.”

Miller said the team’s trip to a tournament in Chicago, Ill. was pretty memorable for her. “When we were there our other setter rolled an ankle and we handled it by unifying as a team,” she said. “I’m noticing more and more that life is about teamwork.” There are 10 members on the varsity team and Hamilton is proud of how the girls have played. “We have very good teamwork this year,” she said. “We’ve been working on our communication on the court though. Volleyball is a mental game and you have to have the confidence that you can do it and overcome a tough situation.” Miller played setter/spiker and Johnson, Carr and Coakley all played spiker. of the favorites from the 2010 Wings Over Coshocton, and especially the Flags of Honor, a moving tribute to the fallen in the IraqAfghanistan conflict. Those that attended the 2010 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show recalled that it was a “truly memorable display of patriotism and tribute to our fallen heroes. Ticket prices will be $10 for adults, $5 for children with age 2 and under getting free admission. Toler added that he is pleased to announce the return of the Air Show to Coshocton. “The community support for not only the 2010 Air Show but prior air shows here has been phenomenal,” he said. “The people and businesses of Coshocton support this airport in many ways, and having ‘Wings Over Coshocton’ is one of the ways we can pay some back for that support. The crowd was awed by the performers and I would expect nothing less at next year’s show.” Further announcements will be published as plans are finalized.

The vendors at the market love the fact that our Christmas in the Country Craft Show has become somewhat of a traditional event here in downtown Fresno and we all look forward to kicking off the holiday season. So, I thought it would be appropriate to touch on some of the more special traditions that most families honor 23222 CR 621 • 622-9766 during the Christmas season. OPEN: Mon. - Fri. 7am - 5pm • Sat. 8am - 12pm For instance, hanging stockings by the fire with care is a favorite in most households on Christmas Eve. Legend has it that three poor sisters had no dowry for their wedding day. One sister had hung her wet woolen sock by the fire to dry, Father Christmas heard of the these poor girls dilemma and threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney for each girl, the third bag landed in the sock that had been hung to dry. We all know that a wreath hung on one’s front door welcomes guest to your home. But a holly wreath hung not only welcomes visitors, but is a reminder of the reason for the season. The points on the holly leaves represent the thorns worn by Christ and the red holly berries symbolize His blood. The popular colors of red and green that are used

throughout the Christmas season have their own special meaning as well. Green stands for a promise of rebirth and life, the color red once again stands for the blood of Christ. People young and old alike always enjoy getting caught under the mistletoe. This legend comes from the Scandinavian goddess Frigga, whose son was shot and killed by an arrow made from mistletoe wood. Her tears became the white berries and she ordered that mistletoe would never be used to harm anyone ever again. Instead, it would be a symbol of love and everyone that passed under it, the beautiful goddess would kiss. Your vendors are so looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday, Nov. 3 for the Christmas in the Country Craft Show. It’s sure to be a fun time for all who attend. There will be hourly door prize give-a-ways and a lovely market basket full of scrumptious market items will be raffled off for charity. So mark your calendar and come get into the spirit of Christmas at this year’s craft show on Nov. 3. Who knows, we may even hang some mistletoe! In the meantime, here is a festive recipe that doesn’t require much of any cooking, to help you get in the holiday mood. Tangerine & Cranberry Relish 1 lb. fresh or frozen cranberries 4 tangerines 2 cups sugar 1 cup raisins 1 cup chopped walnuts

Wash fresh cranberries (do not thaw frozen berries) and put through the medium blade of food chopper. Wash tangerines and remove peel. Put peels through food chopper, remove seeds from tangerines and cut sections into small pieces. Combine cranberries, tangerine peel and pieces with sugar; stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Add raisins and nuts, mix well, place in storage containers with tight fitting lids, refrigerate. Relish will keep for several weeks. Makes about 2 1/2 pints. Is excellent served with your Christmas ham or turkey and is great for sharing! The Christmas in the Country Craft Show will be in the big red building at Mark McCoy’s Auto in downtown Fresno. Signs will be posted. For more information, please call 740-545-0849 or 740-545-0997 anytime.

Roscoe Village to add more benches to gardens NEW BENCH

BETH SCOTT

COSHOCTON - From 1969 – 1975, the first bench in Roscoe Village was designed by Mrs. Montgomery. Using antique architect books and magazines as a guide for her restoration, construction crews created unique bench designs from Montgomery’s vision. Montgomery’s main focus in restoring Roscoe was gardening where she loved to plant perennials, shrubs, and trees. In her mind, there was no better way to enjoy her works of art than by creating places for visitors to sit and relax. Diana Swigert had the privilege of working with Mrs. Montgomery while Roscoe was being restored. The benches were used during the restoration of Roscoe and one of Swigert’s jobs was to wipe off the morning dew each day. Now, some of the benches are deteriorating with age and Swigert wants to add new benches to different areas of Roscoe. Each bench costs $250 and Swigert is looking for local residents to

donate money for a bench to be made. Each bench is custommade by M&M Construction with Ohio lumber. “I want to keep her preferences in the gardens without adjustment changes,” said Swigert. “She wanted benches in the garden and I want to keep her benches in the garden.” Due to cost, these new benches will be made out of red oak instead of redwood, which was the lumber used to make the original benches. The benches are thicker than average and very sturdy. For those who donate money for a bench, an engraved plaque will be placed on the brace board with the names of those who donated that bench, which will be donated by G.A. Fischer. They may also be a place for donators to dedicate the bench in memory or in honor of a loved one. “I would like to have several new benches for the garden next spring,” said Swigert. “That would be wonderful. This I feel is a way of continuing Mrs. Montgomery’s vision because that is what I truly think and feel, a continuing vision for her garden.” Funding for the new benches is all by donation only. Money for two benches have already been donated, one by Mike Pherson of M&M Construction and the other by Swigert. One bench has been constructed and is now in the Buckeye Garden under three dogwood trees and a Buckeye tree, and the other is in the process of construction now. On average, it takes one month to build a bench from the time the order is placed to completion.

Roscoe Village is in the process of adding new benches to the grounds. Pictured here is the first bench that was completed and donated by Mike Pherson of M&M Construction. “Mike Pherson from M&M Construction has really done a great job working with me,” said Swigert. “He has done an excellent job with the pattern and the bench.” There are three original benches left and two are starting to deteriorate. The first places the new benches will be placed will be in Mrs. Montgomery’s gardens, and the three original benches will stay in the village until they are no longer useable. Swigert is working on the benches with Connie Miller, landscape manager at Roscoe, and Chad Miller, maintenance supervisor. “These are people who want to support Mrs. Montgomery’s visions in the gardens,” said Swigert. “That’s what these benches are for.” To donate to the Roscoe bench project, contact the Visitor’s Center at 622-9310 or Connie Miller at 623-6526. “As a gardener, I can see how Mrs. Montgomery’s style and way of doing things was unique and ahead of her time,” said Swigert. “It was inviting and enjoyable for all of the seasons. A bench was just a way to invite people to sit and enjoy their garden. She’s a person that I truly admired. So it’s very easy for me to carry on her vision. I admired her style.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

This is the second time the couple has gathered friends together for fall fun around the fire. “It’s an all day process,” Scott said. “It takes us from about 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The whole idea is for friends to come out and enjoy the afternoon.” Friends bring food to munch on throughout the day and help work the apple butter.
