COSHOCTON – Veterans have a special place in Brad Fuller’s heart.

“My stepdad was a veteran and I’ve always appreciated what they’ve done and the sacrifices they’ve made,” he said.

Fuller is working with a group of concerned citizens who share his feelings to establish the Coshocton County Veterans Emergency Relief Fund.

“This all started when a friend of mine who is a veteran found himself in an emergency situation,” Fuller said. “The local veterans service office does all it can to help our veterans but I wanted to help create an additional fund that they could pull from in case of emergencies.”

The Coshocton Foundation will house the fund, but the Veterans Service Office will have control over deciding who might need to be helped by it. The fund also will only be available for veterans who live in Coshocton County.

“This is a way to say thank you and repay our local veterans and those who are serving now for what they’ve done,” Fuller said.

A Night at the Races event is being planned to generate money for the fund. The event will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Coshocton Elks Lodge, 434 Chestnut St. “It’s big fun,” Fuller said. “We rented a prepackaged kit from a company that includes eight taped horse races.”

The races are narrated from start to finish, which helps make attendees feel like they are really at the races. The evening also will include programs with information on the horses and the chance to bet with “fun money” and win prizes.

The races start at 6:30 p.m. and will continue every half hour until 10 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes food. Beverages can be purchased for an extra cost.

The public also can participate in the event as sponsors. Horses can be sponsored for $20 each, races for $100 each or an honor sponsorship can be made at the following levels: Bronze – up to $49; silver - $50 to $99; gold - $100 to $249; or platinum - $250 and up.

“We will try to keep the fund active with future fundraisers,” Fuller said. “I hope the money never has to be used, but it will be nice to know it’s there if needed.”

Individuals, families, organizations, businesses and schools were invited to bring their pre-carved pumpkins for display in a friendly community competition. - Two dogs were picked up by the warden, three dogs were brought in as strays, eight dogs were destroyed, four citations were issued, 11 calls were handled, 12 licenses were sold, six dogs were sold, three dogs were redeemed, two dogs per owner were surrender, and $25 in boarding fees were collected for a total of $404 in fees collected.

At the meeting, the Commissioners also agreed to a motion to help out the Village of West Lafayette.

COSHOCTON – Final touches to Coshocton County Dog Warden Russell Dreher’s new vehicle were discussed at the Oct. 24, Coshocton County Commissioners meeting.

The GMC pickup truck was ordered about 60 to 90 days ago and just came in from Centerville, which is south of Dayton. According to Budget Director Robin Schonauer, the truck was a necessary purchase after the old one was totaled in an accident.

The truck cost $22,207, but a bed liner, gun racks and an emergency light still need added to it.

The Commissioners were able to get the truck for the state purchasing price. When projects are $25,000 or more the commissioners must bid them out. However, the state already has contracts for some projects such as vehicles and the commissioners are able to benefit from their contracts.

“That’s probably a $30,000 truck that we were able to get that kind of deal on (through the state),” said Clerk Mary Beck.

Dreher is pleased with the vehicle.

“It’s a nice truck and is perfect on size,” he said.

Commissioner Dane Shryock explained that the dog warden is a law enforcement program that has really picked up its presence in the community.

“We are at around 250 citations for the year and have almost more than doubled the number of dog licenses we’ve sold in the last eight years,” he said.

COSHOCTON - St. John’s United Church of Christ, located at 808 Orange St., will have its 40th annual holiday bazaar Wednesday, Nov. 7.

The 2012 bazaar will start at 9 a.m. with baked goods going on sale at that time. Pie and coffee will be available also. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., lunch will be served consisting of sloppy joes, coneys, kraut dogs, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, vegetable soup, chicken noodle and potato soup, potato salad, fruit salad, cake, pie, brownies and beverages.

The evening meal will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue until we run out of food. Takeout dinners are available by calling 622-2781. Baked goods and candy will be sold at the Country Store along with homemade mincemeat, noodles and fresh sausage. The women of the church get together a few weeks before the bazaar and make the mincemeat.

November 4th, 1962 Basketball enthusiasts were sure to cram the courts that Wednesday night to watch the City Merchants basketball team battle The Harlem Magicians in the Coshocton High School gym.

The City Merchants were composed of West Lafayette High School cage stars and three members of the West Lafayette coaching staff.

The Harlem Magicians were created in 1953 and had racked up more than 1800 victories and only nine loses. The City Merchants hoped to add another loss to that statistic Wednesday night. The event was sponsored by the Coshocton Jaycees and money raised went to further youth activities.

of Time, Traces of Glory: Native American Prehistoric Tools and Points,” which will be on display through Sunday, Dec. 30. The exhibit features private collections of artifacts found in Coshocton and adjacent counties.

Dr. Lepper is well acquainted with Coshocton’s prehistory, having written his doctoral thesis on Indian artifacts found in Coshocton County. Besides his work as Curator of Archaeology at the OHS, Dr. Lepper is visiting professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Denison University in Granville and an instructor at the Ohio State University’s Newark Campus.

He writes a column on archaeology for the Columbus Dispatch and he is the author of “Ohio Archaeology: an illustrated chronicle of Ohio’s ancient American Indian cultures,” published in 2005. This book received the Society for American Archaeology’s Public Audience Book Award in 2007. The Ohio Archaeological Council presented Dr. Lepper with its Public Awareness Award in 2008 in recognition of his efforts to promote the archaeology of the state.

November 1st, 1972 A new course had been added to the curriculum at Ridgewood High School.

Juniors and seniors now had the opportunity to take a leather crafting class. Students had been making wallets, purses, key chains, and one student was working on an electric clock.

Students purchased a kit at the beginning of the class which contained all the tools they would need, leather, and varnish for their projects. Mr. Wright, instructor of the leather crafting class, said it gave the students an opportunity to learn a new hobby they might not otherwise have known about.

November 1st, 1982 Margaret Arnold of West Lafayette had been chosen as an entrant in the Miss Ohio USA Pageant, which would select Ohio’s representative at the Miss USA Pageant in May. Arnold was a 1980 graduate of Ridgewood High School and had been crowned homecoming queen that year. She was also involved in sports, Student Council, and yearbook. One of the requirements of the Miss Ohio contest was to wear an outfit descriptive of the area she represents.

November 4th, 1952 Coshocton County came out on voting day to show their patriotism and practice their right to vote. According to county precinct officials, voters in Coshocton showed up in record numbers in the 1952 presidential election. The voting in the county had gone down considerably in the 1948 election, but the 1952 numbers broke the previous record set in 1940. The oldest voter in the county was 101-year-old William Smart. He had only missed voting twice in his life, once when there was a death in his family, and the previous election when he was ill.

“I hope people realize that this is not for salaries or operating expenses,” Hire said. “We are talking bricks, mortar, roofs, asphalt and other property maintenance items we might have to take care of. These are things that if we let go could be a larger expense.”

PINK OUT

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton City Schools District is asking for a yes vote from the public on Election Day. “Our school levy is a renewal,” said Dr. David Hire, superintendent of Coshocton City Schools. “We are not asking for additional money or a new tax.”

The levy for the district is a five year capital improvements 1.12 mill renewal. Money generated from it is used for maintenance and upkeep projects to the schools and their grounds.

“We don’t have any specific projects for the money, we just want to make sure we have enough to deal with problems and take care of things as they arise,” Hire said. “We also have to take care of our three older buildings until we are totally out of them.”

Hire said in the past, money from the levy was used to fix the stage in the high school’s auditorium and add railing in the gym for safety.

“When you are talking buildings and grounds you want them to look good so they can be a showcase that the community is proud of,” he said.

Money from the levy cannot be used for items such as salaries, benefits, utilities, insurance or supplies.

The levy was first passed by voters in 1987 for 2.0 mill and has been renewed every five years since then. In January 2011 it was reduced to 1.12 mills. This was done to return money back to the community after it passed the 0.5 mill maintenance levy for the new elementary school.

“As we go down to two buildings we hope we will not have as great of a need, but we have to make sure we can take care of it (the new school) and have money set aside if things break or need repaired,” Hire said. “The high school also continues to age and you never know what might need replaced.”

The levy, which comes up for renewal every five years, used to generate $224,000 a year, but now will only bring in $114,776 each year. If the levy does not pass, cost for upkeep projects

COSHOCTON - For anyone driving either direction on Main Street or Fourth Street by the court square in Coshocton on Thursday, October 25, they may have been wondering about the brightly colored tee shirts blowing in the breeze.

Krystal Smucker, speaking for First Step Family Violence Intervention Services, who sponsored the event, said, “This is called the Clothesline Project, and represents shirts done by victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and the different colors represent the different types of abuse. We do this once a year to let people know that this does go on and it does affect and it impacts generations.

Smucker said, “The reason we started our agency was to give people options and to let them know what those options are. If they have questions and don’t know which direction to go, they can come to us and we can help them look at the different options and walk them through it.” You can contact First Step at 740-622-8504.

First Step reminds community of domestic violence

Coshocton EMS urges voters to vote for renewal levy COSHOCTON - The Coshocton County EMS has seen a steady increase of calls from county residents over the past several years, and with that increase came the need for a fifth crew. With 6,200 calls coming in last year, and expecting 6,500 calls this year, the Coshocton County EMS is asking voters to vote for a 2 mil renewal levy with a 1 mil increase for operation and maintenance. The levy would cost a homeowner of a $100,000 home $91.06 a year, which is an increase of less than $30.00 a year from the current 2 mil Levy.

“We can’t afford to continue 5 crews on 2 mils,” said Todd Shroyer, assistant director of Coshocton County EMS. “Bernie and I saved up enough money to fund a fifth crew for one year to see if it would work before we asked tax payers for money.”

The result of adding a fifth crew saved county residents from having to wait on assistance.

When a call would come in from Warsaw or West Lafayette, EMS employees at the Warsaw or West Lafayette stations would often be tied up for more than an hour, and with both Coshocton ambulances out in the city, other county residents in need of help were left waiting for assistance. With the addition of the fifth crew, that crew is available to back up the City of Coshocton or respond to the Warsaw or West Lafayette stations in the event those stations get a call and have to leave. The whole idea amounts to keeping all 3 EMS stations staffed more efficiently to reduce response times.

“With pushing 6,500 calls, it’s essential that we run five ambulances so we don’t delay any response times for residents,” said Bernie Minet, director of Coshocton County EMS. On average, it costs Coshocton County EMS $400,000 to pay for one crew for one year.

To staff a 2 person ambulance crew 24 hours per day, seven days per week for a year requires 17,472 labor hours, or roughly the equivalent of 9 people working a 40 hour week.

To save money to pay for the additional crew, Coshocton County EMS purchased four used ambulances for a total of $70,000 over the past 2 years instead of buying all new ambulances. New ambulances would have cost almost $500,000. Buying used saved at least $400,000. Three of these ambulances were from small volunteer departments in New Jersey.

“Every truck we get goes to the local Ford dealer for a thorough inspection,” said Shroyer.

Staff at the Coshocton County EMS has been going door-to-door campaigning for their levy and has received mostly positive feedback.

“We would like everybody to know we have always and always will remain active in the community with public relation events like football games, festivals, and fairground event,” said Minet. “We also assist at many public health screenings around the County and we try to participate in many activities that we are asked throughout the year. We also offer free blood pressure checks at all three of our stations.”

Minet said that many residents in the community come in almost every day just to be evaluated by the EMS staff, at no charge to them. There is also no out-of-pocket charge for residents who call EMS for assistance. EMS charges their insurance company and whatever portion the insurance pays; EMS considers this amount paid in full. We consider that to be a thank you to the residents of Coshocton County for supporting an EMS Levy. We don’t believe in making people pay twice for one service.

Non-residents of Coshocton County are held responsible for the full ambulance charge.

“We just hope the community supports us with this levy because we’re always out there and available 24 hours a day,” said Minet. “ Shroyer said that EMS does a lot of service calls and more than 400 times last year, they responded to in-home requests.

“There are a lot of requests that ambulance crews do each day that does not get charged to insurances, such as wellbeing checks and uninjured fall assists. We provide a medical public service and we don’t always have to come racing in lights and sirens blaring to bring some help to someone,” said Minet. “We provide that service to any resident in Coshocton County.”

“It’s great to be productive and have my own business,” said Hoy, who communicated with the audience through the use of his iPad. “Thank you to all those who helped me.”

Angela Richcreek, CES Director, also honored several businesses that have employed her clients. Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, Triple “R” Stables, which ran the canal boat this year, the Coshocton City Recreation Department, Jerry’s Great American Restaurant and the SportZone were all specially recognized.

Mike Brown, manager of the SportZone, shared what he has learned from working with clients of the Coshocton County Board of DD. “You’d be surprised at what people with disabilities can do,” he said. “I’m impressed and amazed every single day.”

Steve Oster, superintendent of the Coshocton County Board of DD, and Bob Nicholson, adult service director, thanked all of the businesses that work with their agency and help its clients become employed in the community.

CONESVILLE – The most precious gift you can give a child is your time.

That was part of the message delivered to fathers and their children during the Coshocton County Fatherhood Initiative pancake breakfast held Oct. 22 and Oct. 23, at Conesville Elementary School.

Children and their father figures were treated to pancakes and sausage and the opportunity to play cornhole to win extra door prize tickets.

They also listened to a presentation by Frank Polen, who is a father of two, the principal at Warsaw Elementary School and an advocate for the program.

“No one is more important than your father, your father figure or your family,” Polen said.

“They are your heroes. They are the ones that each and every day encourage you and sometimes punish you when necessary.”

According to William Johnson, chairman of the Coshocton County Fatherhood Initiative, 51 fathers RSVP for Monday’s breakfast and 35 did

The Fatherhood Initiative plans to do as many of the breakfasts as it can during the school year. They are working on the schools in the River View district right now and plan to contact more of them about the breakfasts as the year goes on.

New Bethel Ministries co-sponsored the breakfast, the River View football team helped with door prizes and the child support enforcement agency did a coloring contest that also included the chance to win prizes.

Josh Lahmers, who is the varsity football coach at River View, also took a minute to address the fathers who attend the breakfast.

“As a coach I spend a lot of time away from my children so I enjoy the time I do get to spend with them,” he said. “The fact that you are here shows that you care and you do make a difference in your child’s life.”

COSHOCTON - Coshocton Business and Professional Women (BPW) met at the Coshocton Elks Oct. 22. After announcing Kim Gress as the 2012 Woman of the Year and after dinner, a short business meeting was held.

Guests included Kenny Gress, Erin Sahlica and Jennifer Miksa.

President Emily McBurney encouraged members to attend the Region 4 Meeting. She announced the Christmas Party is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at the Frontier Power meeting room. Cost is $15. Plus you need to bring a $10 gift to exchange. Members discussed the cake auction, fundraising ideas, Young Careerist (YC) and sponsoring the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum.

Marilyn Lauvray announced the dates for the Individual Development (ID) Class would be Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4, at Agents Realty and Auction Service. Cost is $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers. Cost includes instruction, materials, lunch, snacks and 1.4 CEUs completion certificate. Tomma Bordenkircher gave a report on Meet the Candidates held on Oct. 11, at the Coshocton County Career Center and co-sponsored by the Coshocton County Farm Bureau. She stated approximately 114 people attended including 26

candidates and 14 members. It was on WTNS Web live and the Talk Show. She also announced plans for the 80th year anniversary for next year from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 15, 2013, in the Frontier Power meeting room.

Liz Herrell thanked Rodger Bordenkircher and Marilyn Lauvray for helping to put up the Fair booth, Jan Luce for helping her guard the building and Raine Hammond for tearing it down. She applauded Tomma, who represented BPW/OH, for her five-minute sermonnette at the 33rd Ecumenical Lunch on Sunday held at the Steubenville Country Club. The 2013 Ecumenical will be hosted by BPW/PA. She reminded members dues were reduced to $27.50 this month and to encourage friends and family to join.

Money was collected for First Step. First Step sent a thank you letter for the $296.41 collected from recent meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Edie Ryans. NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Victory Assembly of God is hosting its first Delaware Days Festival Sunday, Nov. 4 to celebrate the rich heritage of the Tuscarawas Valley.

Starting at 11 a.m., the festival will open with live music, animal presentations, performers, reenactments and much more. Booths will be open until 4 p.m. with various special events scheduled throughout the day. A dramatic reenactment of David Zeisberger’s sermon to Deleware Chief Netawatwes (Newcomer) will begin at 1 p.m. with an encore at 3 p.m. The Roy McFarland Review will take the stage at 2 p.m. presenting authentic Appalachian music.

Booths will be open all day from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. showcasing arts, crafts, music, games, food and a hands-on reptile display.

The City of Coshocton observed the beginning of Purple Light Night on Friday, Oct. 26 at City Hall. The theme for this year is “Giving Domestic Violence a Boot”. Pictured here are residents from Coshocton, Cleveland, and Columbus placing ornaments on the Circle of Life tree.

Mayor Steve Mercer proclaimed November 2012 to be Purple Light Night month and encouraged all residents and businesses to display purple lights around the city. A tree was recently planted at City Hall in memory of a local child who was a victim of domestic violence. COTC announces Summer Quarter 2012 President and Honor List

of 2012 was Team Recruitment/Mentoring and Development Chair. Gress is currently serving as the President of the Coshocton County American Cancer Society Board.

Gress is employed through The Ohio State University County Extension Office as a Program Assistant for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). This free program serves limited income families with children by addressing issues like food safety, nutrition, using a grocery list and how to choose healthy foods for themselves and their families.

Gress has been married to her husband Kenny Gress for 16 years. She has a daughter, Danyelle Erin Sahlica of Cleveland and a son, Jarrod Allen Burt of Zanesville. She has four stepchildren, Richard Burt of Florida, John Burt of Coshocton, David Gress, of Plainfield, and Tara Gress Sthrol of Wills Creek. She is very proud to tell everyone about her 10 wonderful grandchildren, nine boys and one little girl.

COSHOCTON - The 2012 Woman of the Year is Kim Gress. She joined BPW in 2006, and was brought into BPW by Karen Fry. Ever since Gress became a member in 2006, she has been talking to women about membership in BPW. She is the example to all about how we

should be promoting the organization to women in the community.

Gress has served as vice president for two years and president for two years. She has chaired the cake auction for four years and is currently serving as a BPW Region 4 officer.

In 2009, Gress was honored by the Tribute to Women of Achievement program with the Volunteer Award. Among her volunteer activities were volunteering as a Victim’s Advocate for rape and sexual assault victims and she also attended a series of training sessions to earn her certificate. Gress served as a Crisis Hotline Volunteer for several years. She then got involved with the First Step Domestic Violence Prevention Program and the First Step Domestic Violence Shelter. She now serves as Vice-President on the First Step Board. Gress was on the Board of Commissioners for the Coshocton Metropolitan Housing Authority, an active Policy Council Member of Coshocton County Head Start, a member on the Family Selection Committee for Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and GRADS, active participant and contributor to Bowl for Kids Sake, Facilitator for the Citizens Circle and has served on the First Friday Committee.

Her most precious volunteer hours belong to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Event. Kim co-chaired Relay for Life for three years, one year with Bob Nicholson and two years with Emily McBurney. Her title for May

Fall Party and Fundraiser. There will be a fall party and fundraiser Sunday, Nov. 4 from 4 – 7 p.m. at McElwee Park in New Castle. There will be chili, hot dogs, games, campfire, s’mores, and a hay ride. They will also have an apple pie baking contest. Bring a pie for a chance to win a prize. All proceeds go to New Castle Ministries and McElwee Park.

50 Plus Expo. The annual 50 Plus Expo will be at the Coshocton Village Inn and Suites in Thursday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Booth space is free and tables will be provided. Exhibitors need to set up by 9:45 a.m. Thursday and the booth should be staffed at all times through 3 p.m. Miller Pharmacy will provide a sundae bar. The event is sponsored by The Health Plan Secure Care/Secure Choice.

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. The featured band performs from 7 – 9 p.m. and acoustic jam follows from 9:15 – 11 p.m. The featured band for Nov. 24 is Bluegrass 409 Bluegrass Band.

Announcements Flu Shots. The Coshocton City Health Department at 400 Brown Lane will have flu clinics every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. now by appointment only. There is no cost for clients with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. For all other clients, the cost is $20.

Veterans Day Program. Isleta United Methodist Church invites all area veterans to a patriotic program on Veteran’s Day, Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The Isleta choir will be singing the musical, “I Love this Land” and there will be poems, readings, and other musical selections.
