sandstone used around it and returning the court room to the way it originally looked. “That building is the center of our community and we want people to see that we take pride in it,” Shryock said. “If we let it deteriorate then society will deteriorate.” The courthouse is just one of many buildings in the community that the commissioners are responsible for. They also own the old county home, with is currently occupied by Head Start, who wants to do renovations to the building. Steve Troendly and Sheryl Hardesty stopped by the commissioners Oct. 30 meeting to discuss the need for key pads to be added to doors, a system set up so visitors must be buzzed into the building, a wall added to block direct access to the elevator and a few other changes. These upgrades would cost about $18,000 and they also are looking at $6,000 to $8,000 for a metal roof on a building behind the school. They also are looking at a $5,000 fix to a water line problem and trying to get tapped into natural gas. The commissioners gave Head Start their ok to continue to move forward on the projects. They also gave their blessings to a request made by the Blue Star Mothers. The organization honors local members of the military with a photo slideshow that is constantly played on a television in the window of the Coshocton County Auditor’s Office. “We have a significant glare problem,” said Marge Pizzino, from the Blue Star Mothers. “We want to try to cut that down by placing a temporary vinyl film on the outside of the window.” Commissioners Lee agreed with the group that the display is tough to see during the day. “Even on an overcast day there is still a glare,” he said. “We are all for you doing this just as long as it’s temporary so if you aren’t there in a year or two it can come down.” Colder temperatures will impact how well the film is applied so the Blue Star Mothers plan to wait until warmer weather returns to make the improvement. recent updates cost the commissioners $98,835. “The last time it was just painted,” said Commissioner Curtis Lee. “There was no repair work done then.” Brian Bros. sealed openings they found, repaired slate that needed fixed and did decorative painting. “We feel that if we take care of the outside of the building then the work inside will not be compromised by leaks and water damage,” Shryock said. The commissioners bid the project out twice. The first time they received no bids and the second time Brian Bros. was the lowest bidder. “They’ve done work on other courthouses, libraries, churches and I think are heading to Ohio University next,” Fischer said. The work done by Brian Bros. has a 20 year life expectancy. “We’ve had quite a few comments delivered to us on how nice it looks,” Shryock said. The commissioners were able to pay for this project because of the oil and gas lease they signed for the hydrologic station land. “All three of us have known that work needed done at the courthouse but we didn’t have the funding until now,” said Fischer. The commissioners also have made updates to the heating and air conditioning system at the courthouse and replaced 25 windows. “We did the windows in house with our maintenance people,” Fischer said. “The cool thing about them is that some of the frames had arches that were rotted out and our maintenance guys were able to soak wood and bend it to replace them their selves.” The next two steps the commissioners would like to take with the courthouse are repairing the

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Courthouse recently received a facelift that the county commissioners are quite happy with. “They (the company doing the work) went above and beyond what we expected,” said Commissioner Gary Fischer. “The guys doing the work were very particular. They cleaned the windows before they left and the numbers on the clock were even painted by hand.” Brian Bros. Painting and Restoration, LLC finished the project Oct. 28, after spending about five and a half weeks cleaning, painting and repairing the outside of the courthouse. “This spring we realized the metal work (around the third floor) was rusted,” said Commissioner Dane Shryock. “You needed binoculars to see the holes, but we knew we had to get on this pretty quick because you are talking about a historical building.” The courthouse has stood in downtown Coshocton since 1875. The last time it was painted was in 1988 for about $15,350. The most

2015 County-Wide Reappraisal Begins CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON
COSHOCTON COUNTY - Coshocton County Auditor Christine Sycks announced that the next county-wide Reappraisal for Coshocton County will be for tax year 2015, payable in 2016. Work on this project has already begun. One of the statutory duties of the County Auditor is to ensure that all properties are assessed with a fair market value for tax purposes. “Ohio Law and the Ohio Department of Taxation require county auditor’s office to view and appraise every parcel of real estate at least once every six years,” said Sycks. “This requires our office to view, collect and enter property information that contributes to the property’s value.” A contract has been signed with Tyler-Technologies out of Moraine, Ohio, to do the reappraisal work, alongside Wesley Tubbs, County Chief Appraiser, and Jarrod Tipton, Appraiser. Every parcel in the county will be viewed, first electronically and then physically, throughout the twoyear process. The first step for the reappraisal will be for the appraisal company to send out mailers to the owners of all residential and agricultural properties with buildings on them. These mailers, showing what the county currently has on record, were mailed on Oct. 25. Property owners should carefully review the information and let the Auditor’s Office know about any changes, additions, or deletions that need to be made to make the record accurate. If the record is correct, no action is necessary. The appraisers will enter any changes reported by the owners into the data. This will give them a good, accurate record to use when they go into the field. “With the help of the educational materials available on our website, homeowners will have greater access to, and a better understanding of, the procedures taken to determine real estate valuation,” said Sycks. A link to a program, entitled Your Home. Your Value. and developed with the assistance of the County Auditor’s Association of Ohio, will be available as well as a link to an informative video describing the process. In addition, homeowners can visit the auditor’s website for answers to view the status of the project and other pertinent information. COSHOCTON - Health Services and Hospice of Coshocton was recently named a Cardiovascular Pioneer by the Home Health Quality Improvement (HHQI) National Campaign, which is an initiative of the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The Pioneer designation is awarded to home health agencies that make a commitment to helping patients lower their risks for heart attacks and strokes. Participating agencies implement patient-centered programs to improve aspirin therapy, blood pressure control, cholesterol management and smoking cessation (known as the ABCS of cardiovascular prevention). They also agree to report statistics to the HHQI campaign, which tracks progress locally and across the nation through its Cardiovascular Data Registry pilot project. “Health Services and Hospice of Coshocton is participating in the quality improvement and

I also wouldn’t have met my living (kidney) donor if we hadn’t opened the store. That in itself is a miracle. I have a lot of great memories from the store that I will keep and hold on to.” The store will officially close at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24 and until then all merchandise will be on sale. However, the store’s shelves and parts of the kitchen used for the cooking classes are not for sale. “I’m going to continue to do the cooking classes,” Jenny said. “I’ve been talking to local venues and businesses about doing them there and I also will do private (cooking) parties in people’s homes.” The economy at times made sales for the store slow. “Locally our economy is struggling,” Jenny said. “It’s tough for the everyday person right now, but you have to shop local and support your local businesses. It’s up to us as citizens to make changes because they are not going to happen on their own.” The cooking classes, however, were almost always popular. “Their attendance would only drop off a little in the winter, but we usually filled every one of them,” Jenny said. The final class to be offered in the store will be Wednesday, Nov. 20. The non-traditional holiday meal class starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be taught by Bob McKenna. Tickets are $10 and RSVP is required by calling 575-4049. Jenny and Chris also plan to continue to support community events. “Chris and I both try to give back to the community,” Jenny said. “We really want to promote local history and the beauty of Coshocton.” One event they will continue to support is Taste for Summer at Clary Gardens. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17,

COSHOCTON – Jenny Wilson enjoys people and cooking. “I like making a dish and watching someone taste it and then see their face glow,” she said. “You can’t put a price on that.” Wilson has decided to focus on what she truly enjoys and close the Village Pantry in Roscoe Village, which she and her husband Chris opened in 2010. “It was a tough decision to make, but I think it’s time to take the part of the business I love and move in a different direction other than retail,” Jenny said. The Village Pantry sold specialty kitchen items, but it also offered cooking classes to the public.

Cindy Kostecki completed her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification program in the spring of 2012 through Yoga Central and Hot Yoga in Edwardsville, IL. COSHOCTON – The annual Kiwanis Pancake Day will be moving back to the Coshocton Elks this year as Roberta’s is no longer open. Thirty-five to 40 members of Kiwanis and the Key Club will be working together from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 7 providing freshly-made pancakes, sausage, and beverages to members of the community who come out and support Pancake Day year after year. “The Key Club is a big part of our success each year,” said Brad Fuller, coordinator of the event and member of Kiwanis. Everyone who volunteers is assigned a different task, cleaning tables, flipping pancakes, mixing batter, or serving the public, and they all work in shifts. A lot of hard work and dedication goes into preparing for the event each year, although after 52 years, it runs like a well-oiled machine. “It’s like an airplane,” Fuller said. “Once it gets off the ground, it flies.” Over the course of 12 hours, volunteers feed about 1,000 people. On average, each person will eat about three pancakes. “It’s just a huge community event that everyone looks forward to each year,” said Fuller. “It’s a great time to support Kiwanis and it’s also a social event for people.” Kiwanis’ main goal is to serve the children of the world whether that is physically or financially. All the money raised with ticket sales stay here locally. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis member or at the door. “We try to make it affordable to people,” said Fuller. “We wanted to give the best deal we can while still making it a profitable fundraiser.” Kiwanis is always looking for new members. Five Coshocton High School musicians got the break of a lifetime when they appeared on NBC’s Ted Mack’s Amateur Talent Show. The Coshocton singing group, Four Jacks and a Joker, were already known around the Coshocton area as a talented performing group. They arrived in New York by plane, which was the first plane ride for all members of the group, and they all enjoyed it, especially since the passengers asked them to entertain them on the two-hour flight. While in New York, they enjoyed other entertainers and saw Duke Ellington and his orchestra and the Golden Gate quartet. The musical group consisted of Bill Ingram, Jim Porter, Roger Harrold, Tom King, and Eugene Rogers.
KEENE – For more than 150 years, community members in Keene have been getting together each autumn and making large amounts of apple butter to sell to area residents. The event, which used to take place at various homes in Keene, has been moved to the Keene United Methodist Church where members gathered Saturday, Oct. 26 to make and package apple butter to sell for the church. The apple butter stirring started at 5:30 a.m. and continued until the afternoon when

Mrs. Lavada Fry of Coshocton County was amazed by modern technology that was designed specifically for housewives. Mrs. Fry had recently celebrated her 94th birthday and said that life for a housewife was much harder back in her day. Although her eyesight and hearing had weakened, her mind was sharp as she could still remember operating an ash hopper for soap making and a churn to make homemade butter. For more years than she cared to remember, Mrs. Fry had been hand-washing the dishes and she still did even on her 94th birthday. She was the oldest of 14 children, seven boys and seven girls, had two living children, eight grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Ridgewood completed their football season with a 7-2-1 record, the best in the school’s history. But for senior Dave Foreman, the ending of football season meant a little more to him. That Friday night, Foreman scored a record eight touchdowns, completely wiping out Coshocton County’s single season scoring record of 138 points set previously by Tim McLane, and the area mark of 158 points set by Whit Parks of Newcomerstown in 1969. Foreman concluded the season with 23 touchdowns and 10 two-point conversions. He also had 339 rushing yards in the game and set a new area record of 1500 yards for the season. The Generals scored a victorious 56-6 win over I.V. South that Friday night for their last game of the season.

When people give blood to the American Red Cross, they may not think they are helping others all that much. That was not the case with Doris Hayes, who had probably received blood more times than anyone else in Coshocton County. Hayes suffered from a disease, myloid fibrosis for 12 years and had to receive a blood transfusion every few weeks. The disease affected her bone marrow, where the blood is produced. She said she wished she could personally thank each person who had donated, but most donations were anonymous. In the last ten years, she received nearly 200 pints of blood, two pints per day in a three-day hospital stay every six to eight weeks. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

COSHOCTON – Jon McFarland recently competed in the World Karate Championship in Italy where he placed second in his division against 11 other competitors from around the world. “It feels pretty good, especially to represent Team U.S.A.,” said McFarland. McFarland’s journey to the top started when he qualified for regionals in Toledo where he was awarded first place. From there, he traveled to Nationals in Detroit where he again placed first. He and the other top three were qualified to go to Italy to compete for the world title. He first became interested in karate when he was 14 years old and began competing in 1991. He has competed in and won tournaments in California, Florida, and New York. During the World Karate Championship, McFarland met former world champions from Team U.S.A. who offered to help him train for the 2014 World Karate Championship in Ireland.

“Jason Flood did an excellent show – and actually he got certified for a lower altitude after doing our show – he was rated by an examiner so he got his license to go lower. The one that we added was the extra 300 – the gentleman from Israel – a tremendous act – you will probably see him again for sure at our next show.” Connie Toler said, “I’m most grateful to all the volunteers and especially all those that came back on Sunday – most everyone came back. We didn’t have a lot of problems – the radio communications between everybody was just – it was practically silent all day – it was a good show. COSHOCTON Coshocton Airport Administrator Bethel Toler reported that the 2013 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show was a success. Toler said, “The Air Show went real well. The only bad thing was that we had to cancel on Saturday due to the weather. That really worried us going into Saturday because we have never done that before. Actually it turned out really well. We approximated that we had a little over 2,500 people, which is good. Had it been on Saturday we had calls from the northern part of the state and everywhere in Ohio, we would probably had another 8,000 or 9,000 people.” “We were in the black with it so you can’t ask for much more. We didn’t go in the red and everyone’s happy. That was the main goal since we had to cancel on Saturday to have a good show plus.” Toler talked about all of the volunteers that helped make the transition from Saturday to Sunday, “I don’t think there are any other people than Coshocton that really goes out for events like this and volunteers their time to help and do such a good job. The sponsors – that was unbelievable for the air show. We had a lot of sponsors and we had a lot of in kind gifts and just tremendous.” “The next air show will be in 2015 – Sept. 12-13 – if everything works out it will be a two day show. It will be great.”

Coshocton Redskins Basketball Tip Off Club It is with great pride that the “Coshocton Boys Basketball Tip Off Club” announce its continuing support for “The Coshocton Boys Basketball Teams”! This unique and exciting program completed its campaign last season with resonating success! The fundamentals goals of The Tip Off Club were (and still are) simply to enhance basketball activities for our dedicated players and to energize the students, parents, and fans of our wonderful community! Building on “The Buzz” created in last year’s play off games, we are eager to kick off another exciting season in support of our basketball program! As with last season, all funds collected by the Coshocton Boys Basketball Tip Off Club will directly benefit the boys basketball program. Expenditures for the 2013-2014 year include: 1. Paying for a bus to transport students and adults to away games. 2. Purchasing uniforms and basketball shoes for the players. 3. Purchasing Redskins tee shirts for students to wear to games. 4. Purchasing equipment for players. 5. Team Meals. 6. Any other programs or tangible equipment beneficial to the team. What is your favorite pre-game warm-up song? This song isn’t on our warm-up playlist, but I personally try to listen to “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us” by Sidewalk Prophets. It gets me ready to play and reminds me of what I play for. What is your favorite sports drink and flavor? Mostly a water fan. What advice would you give younger athletes? First, believe in yourself in all things. Second, awareness and anticipation are two of the most important parts of any sport you can play on or off the field, being aware of yourself and of what is going on around you is crucial. Applying awareness and anticipating things will also help. Sometimes this just means making sure your teammates are okay and being ready when they need help. What do you want to do after high school graduation? I plan to attend college to major in speech pathology. I would love to continue playing soccer if opportunities at the college level arise.

Numerous events planned to celebrate Veterans Day COSHOCTON - Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and there are several opportunities throughout the county to honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. • WAL-MART VETERANS APPRECIATION The local Wal-Mart will hold a special ceremony to honor veterans at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. • ISLETA UMC VETERANS DAY PROGRAM Isleta UMC invites all area veterans to a patriotic program at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the church sanctuary. The Isleta Choir will sing the musical, “America the Beautiful” and there will be readings and other musical selections. Dave Dilly will speak about Coshocton County’s latest Honor Flight and Sergeant Nathan Hardesty will speak about his service in Afghanistan. All veterans will be honored and there will be a free meal after the program for all in attendance. Attendees are asked, but not required, to bring a donation for the Louis Stokes VA Center in Cleveland. COSHOCTON - The PARK space, summer home of the world’s first root ball park, is the designated venue for the Second annual Coshocton Crow Homecoming, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. It seems appropriate to take the opportunity to double up and let the party serve as a “last hurrah” for the root ball trees before they leave their cushy bean bag couches and become part of the planted urban forest. After Nov. 9 the Pomerene Center for the Arts will turn the 19 Root Ball trees over to the Coshocton is Blooming Tree Committee who will work with Coshocton City to see that the trees are planted according to best urban forestry practices. The CIB Tree Committee and Master Gardener Jim Gray played an integral role in the selection of the Root Ball trees ensuring appropriate urban specimens were chosen. Jan Myers, director at the Coshocton Visitors Bureau, says this event is a fun way to turn something that could be viewed as a negative into something positive. “The crows are coming here anyway, so why not take advantage of the situation and use it to promote Coshocton,” she said. “We have already had numerous visitors come to the area in the past few years to witness the masses of crows flying throughout the county and to study the crows’ behavior.” Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the Crow Homecoming. WEST LAFAYETTE – Evan Youker, son of Richard and Rhonda Youker, was named the West Lafayette Rotary student of the month for October. Evan, Ridgewood junior, is an active member of all of the music programs at Ridgewood High School. These include concert choir, dynamic chorale, spare change ensemble, chromatones quartet, marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band. In addition to these numerous music activities, Evan is a member of the foreign language club, quiz team, and drama club. This extremely busy young man has a 4.0 GPA in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. His community activities include 4-H, Coshocton Community Youth Chorale, Moving Spirits, Cardinal Chorale, and the All-Ohio Youth Choir. Evan is an active member of the West Lafayette Baptist Church as well as the youth group and helps with Christ Kitchen. His one relaxation is the Coshocton County bowling league. When asked who has contributed to his self-development, he named his mother. He finds his greatest satisfaction in helping to spread Christianity to those who share a common interest with him.

COSHOCTON - The Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission’s Emergency HEAP program began Nov. 1. Emergency HEAP is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Department of Development, Office of Community Assistance that provides financial assistance to low-income households that are threatened with disconnection from their heating source, or have already had service disconnected. Those households serviced by a PUCO-regulated utility are encouraged to sign up for the Percentage of Income Payment Plus Plan (PIPP Plus) or an alternate budget payment plan in order to receive energy assistance. Households utilizing bulk fuel must have a tank containing less than 25 percent of its capacity. Income documentation for all household members along with social security numbers, electric and gas bills, and other documentation must be presented at the appointment. Income guidelines are based at 175 percent of the Federal Poverty Level and are as follows: Household size of one may earn up to $20,107, household of two $27,142, household of three $34,177, household of four $41,212, household of five $48,247 and household of six $55,282. Income may also be calculated using the past three months, whichever benefits the client. PIPP Plus customers have a lower income eligibility threshold. Approved applicants will also have their application automatically transmitted to the State HEAP office, where additional assistance may be available under the Regular HEAP program. Eligible households may receive financial assistance once per heating season. The HEAP heating season is Nov. 1 through March 31, 2014. The benefit amounts are as follows: PUCO regulated gas or electric customers may receive a benefit of up to $175, non-regulated electric or gas (i.e. coops) may receive a benefit amount up to $450. Income eligible bulk fuel customers may receive up to $350 for wood or coal, up to $750 is available for bulk fuel propane/bottled gas and fuel oil consumers. Co’ from Medbery Marketplace; and more. “One of the great animal phenomena of the world is the congregation of large numbers of birds into a single communal sleeping group known as a ‘roost,’” said Anne Cornell, director of the Pomerene Center for the Arts. “Annually, late October/early November, upwards to 10,000 crows come from as far away as Canada to roost in Coshocton, crow resort town, Crowtown.” Coshocton has carried the nickname Crowtown for some time. “No one seems to know exactly where the nickname came from but it is somehow linked to motorcycles,” Cornell said. “In 2008, when crows began to congregate in town in significant enough numbers to warrant propane cannons and pyrotechnics, the name began to fit like a glove. Science says they’re here to stay.”

The Pomerene Center for the Arts is hosting this free event which will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the PARK Space in the 300 Block of Main Street in downtown Coshocton. the past 14-15 years. It is part of the East Ohio Network and shoe boxes of small toys collected, will be taken to the Valley View Community Church in Sugarcreek. They will be loaded on to semi trucks, transported to collection centers and then shipped to children all over the world. The East Ohio goal is 15,000 boxes. The program has been in existence for 20 years and has delivered more than 100 million boxes with the help of churches from different denominations and various other groups. Participants are encouraged to fill a shoe box with items for a girl or boy and include a $7 donation for shipping. Suggested gifts include: Small toys with extra batteries for those that need them, school supplies, hygiene items, hair clips or toy jewelry. Age categories are: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. The collection week for the program is Nov. 18-25. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The final collection will be from 9 to 11 a.m. The goal is to have the majority of the boxes delivered by Sunday, Nov. 24. COSHOCTON - Promotional products distributor Hasseman Marketing hosted its annual customer appreciation show Oct. 10, at Lake Park Pavilion. The “end user” style show boasted the theme “Oktoberfest” and had over 15 vendors represented for the over 125 customers in attendance. “This year’s show was off the charts,” said owner Kirby Hasseman. “The venue, the suppliers, and the customers came together to make a wonderful atmosphere. We love to be able to provide this opportunity for our clients.” Hasseman dubs the event as “a must see marketing event” as it features a trade show-like atmosphere and even includes a speaker. Association since 1992 and the Association of Critical Care Nurse since 1998. She joined BPW in 2004. For many years she has served as the Chair for the Sweat Suit Project (clothing for rape victims). She has passed out agendas at Meet the Candidates, modeled at the Administrative Professional Luncheon, baked cakes for the Cake Auctions, baked and decorated high-heel shaped cookies for Equal Pay Day, baked and decorated cookies for the 80th Coshocton BPW anniversary, and worked on the Fair Booth. She has taken the Individual Development (ID) course, ID Facilitator training, and she serves on the local ID Committee. She serves on the Issues Management Committee, and last year her submission was recognized at the state conference. She has presented health programs to her local, plus she has located several speakers to talk on health topics. On May 6, Hammond and her husband Dick celebrated 34 years together but on May 11 she lost him to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Besides her five living children and their spouses, she has 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She resides in West Lafayette with her grandson Donovan Miller, a junior at Coshocton County Career Center (CCCC). She is the daughter of Frank and Jean Sharier. “I have known Raine Hammond for 38

COSHOCTON - Raine Hammond was surprised to learn she was voted the 2013 Coshocton Business and Professional Women (BPW) Woman of the Year at Grace United Methodist Church on Monday, Oct. 21. Several members of her family and co-workers were ushered in after her name was announced. After introductions, MC and 2006 Woman of the Year Tomma Bordenkircher read a “This is your Life” version of Hammond’s personal and professional background. Seventeen years after graduating from high school Hammond entered college to obtain her nursing degree – a dream she has had since
childhood. Hammond, second oldest in a family of six, graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1972, was married and had a baby girl. A couple of years later she was a single parent. In 1978, she married Dick Hammond, who had five children plus they added one for a total of seven. In 1989 she entered Kent State. The stepchildren had left home, leaving her with her two girls, now 11 and 14. She traveled to New Philadelphia, a 45-minute drive one way, five days a week for three years. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1992. She was the first member of her family to obtain a college degree. After taking on-line classes, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2008 from Indiana Wesleyan University. In 2009 she received the YWCA/BPW Tribute to Women of Achievement Health Award. In 1991 Hammond started working weekends at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) Extended Care as a Nurse Assistant. Today she is Head Nurse, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on day shift. She serves on the ICU Committee, Code Blue Committee and the Professional Development Committee. She has been a member of the American Nurse

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Towne Centre Association extends an invitation to all city and county schools, local businesses, civic organizations and service groups for participation in the Main Street Magic Christmas Parade. This parade is one of the first events kicking off festivities for the holiday season in Coshocton Towne Centre. The parade is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. Line up begins at 4 p.m. at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. The parade will travel north on Seventh Street and west on Main Street with disbandment near Stewart Field on Water Street. This is an excellent opportunity to promote your school’s spirit, demonstrate your organization’s service to the community, promote your business and encourage shopping locally or to show everyone just how proud you are that you live in Coshocton. You are encouraged to participate as appropriate for the event with floats, motorized or walking units, carolers, etc. All units are requested to have lights and complete the entire parade route. Please remember that candy may not be thrown from any moving units only handed to the children in the crowd. As with last year’s parade the committee is planning to feature a showcase of local mascots. From businesses to school sports teams, we are seeking mascots to participate and join Mr. and Mrs. Frosty, our Gingerbread Boy and Girl, Santa Bear and Rudolph Reindeer. Applications for this year’s parade can be picked up at Miller Pharmacy, the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce or WNTS Radio. The parade committee is accepting calls at 622-1806 if you would like to have the entry form mailed or faxed to you. The deadline to submit the entry form is Friday, Nov. 15. Holiday Craft Show: There will be a holiday craft show and quarter auction on Nov. 9 at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. or until the auction ends to support Relay for Life. HEAP is a federally-funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet the rising costs of home heating bills. Relay For Life Chili Cook-Off: Relay team, All Night for the Fight will be having a chili cook-off Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on South 11th St., Coshocton. The fee to enter is $20. Tasting is $5. Tickets are available now and will also be at the door. Soup Supper: Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church will be having a Veteran’s Day soup supper on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Veterans eat free. There will be homemade soups, sandwiches, pies and cakes, and beverages. A Cultural Adventure: On Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Coshocton Church of the Nazarene, Andy and Heather Swanson and family will be sharing a cultural adventure with you. Heather is a music teacher/singer/songwriter from Scotland and will be performing some Scottish traditional songs and poems as well as some of her compositions. Andy is a newly-qualified aircraft engineer with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). He has been training here in Coshocton for the last three years and they are leaving the states at the end of November in order to serve for the next eight years in Africa. Heather was recently in Uganda for a visit and will be able to give an insight into what they will be doing there and give a flavor of what life will be like. Bring your family and friends, and hear about their journey from Scotland to Coshocton and on to Africa. Fall Rummage Sale: The Coshocton Presbyterian Church will be having a fall rummage sale on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. - noon. A large trash bag will be provided on Saturday for a $5 bag sale. The sale will be in the basement of the church, located at the corner of 4th and Chestnut. Items include tools, collectibles, furniture, jewelry, and much more. All proceeds go toward the Presbyterian Women’s Community Missions. These signs are paid for not by taxpayer money; Replacement of the signs is handled by a fund consisting of private donations, each replacement costing $50. The County Engineers Department assists with removal and installation. “It is primarily a moral issue but it also becomes very personal,” Barstow said. “The signs are a monument designed to pay tribute to servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. “These are veterans who fought and died during the wars in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea and World War II.” The same concerns go for the 190 flag holders that were stolen from veterans’ graves throughout the county last spring. The Sheriff’s Office had some suspects but has not yet been able to link them to their crimes. These items are purchased using taxpayer dollars, but thanks to the generous donations from businesses Given-Dawson and Miller Funeral Homes, they were replaced. Local scrap yard owners are now on the lookout for those who believe they can make a quick buck by recycling them. “Anyone living in close proximity to one of the counties’ cemeteries or near one of the KIA bridges are asked to keep a closer eye on these areas and help maintain the integrity of our

COSHOCTON - The theft of bronze flag holders from the graves of veterans seems to have subsided, but vandalism of Killed-In-Action Memorial Bridge Project signs that are erected throughout the county continues. Recently, another KIA sign situated on Lafayette Township Road 156 was damaged by what appeared to have been a shotgun blast. This marks the fifth time in three years that one of the red and white signs have been used as “target practice” and have had to be replaced. Some signs have been damaged by floodwaters and farm equipment but in the cases where they are riddled with bullet holes that are the most frustrating situations to deal with. “These incidents simply are “not cool” and neither are the person or persons who perpetrate these types of crimes,” said Coshocton County Veterans Service Officer Jim Barstow. It should be noted that these damage reports are no longer being handled solely within the Veterans Office. If a sign is damaged, it is inspected to determine whether it was vandalized or victim of an accident. When foul play is suspected, a report is filed with the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office and an investigation is being conducted. At minimum, if a person is convicted, they could be facing a second-degree misdemeanor for criminal damaging. According to Lt. Dean Hettinger of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, if the Prosecutor’s Office determines that the property that is damaged is a “tomb, monument, gravestone or other similar structure that is used as a memorial for the dead,” the charge could be a fifth degree felony for vandalism. Hettinger also stated that there is also a hunting provision that prohibits anyone from

The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office was scheduled to stop by the school Wednesday, Nov. 6 to talk to the students about safety, show them their various vehicles and give a K-9 demonstration. “Even kindergarten’s not too early to be thinking about what you want to do,” Colvin said. “When our kids get to the high school we want them to be prepared for career paths.” He also wants parents to be involved in their children’s education and one way of doing that was the parents’ luncheon held in October.
