support the show. You see people you don’t see except during the minstrel show. The minstrel is the only time you see people who don’t live here anymore.” This year’s theme is “Music, Music, Music.” “Each year, we try to get something generic to give soloists a wide range to choose from,” said Haumschild about the theme. There are 14 soloists, the chorus, and several interruptions or comedy skits, throughout the show. Overall, there are approximately 50 to 60 people participating in the show each year. In addition to the show, the River View Park Board will be serving a dinner two hours before each show. Tickets for the show are $10 each and can be reserved by calling 740-622-5031 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The cost of the dinner is not included in the ticket price. All of the money raised goes toward the Lions Club. “They do a lot for the community with that money,” said Haumschild. The cast and crew have been rehearsing for this year’s production since the Tuesday after the Coshocton County Fair and are ready to give their audience another memorable performance. Our Town Stories: Labor Unions Strikes

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

COSHOCTON - Coshocton County is rooted in farming, mining and manufacturing. Labor unions along with their powerful tool of persuasion—the strike—also flourished by way of those latter two industries. Join us at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum on Thursday, Nov. 12 at noon as we discuss labor unions and memorable strikes from Coshocton’s past. There are many in recent memory such as G.E., the glove companies and the paper mill, but there were also important strikes at the turn of the 20th century that occurred in the mining industry. Of course one of the most famous union organizers is Coshocton native William F. Green. Green went to work himself in the coal mines in 1879 at the age of 16. He became involved in the trade union movement as a young miner and was elected as GREEN secretary of the Coshocton Progressive Miners Union in 1891. The Coshocton Progressive Miners Union later became a local of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). Green is best remembered for serving as the President of the American Federation of Labor from 1924 to 1952. JHM’s Our Town Stories gathering occurs monthly on the second Thursday of the month at noon. The conversation animates “the old days” as we conjure up memories, share personal stories, and recall Coshocton County as it once was. The atmosphere is casual and the discussion is always informative, amusing and surprising. Admission for the program is free, and beverages and cookies will be provided. Make this hour your lunch break. Feel free to eat your meal while we talk. December’s topic is “Photographers.” For more information contact the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum at 740-622-8710 or jhmuseum@ jhmuseum.org. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is located at 300 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton. The museum is open to the public daily, noon to 5 p.m.

by people such as yourselves.” After the mayor spoke, Vickers took the podium to say a few words. “This is my favorite part, after all the work is done, all the pages are laid out, to travel around to these five towns and celebrate with the community,” he said. He explained that the choosing process begins in early summer when the magazine takes nominations for the best hometowns from people who have traveled around Ohio. He said the November issue isn’t the end. Another issue will be out in January that will feature what there is to love about Coshocton. A July travel issue will focus on tourism in Coshocton and the fun things to do in Coshocton during summer. “We try to tell interesting stories about Ohio and get people adventurous about their state,” said Vickers. “It’s places like Coshocton where the character of Ohio is truly defined and we really believe that. When it comes to a great place to live, work, and visit, it can’t get much better than towns like Coshocton.” The evening ended with Vickers presenting a framed copy of the cover to Mercer and Jan Myers, director of the Coshocton CVB. NOVEMBER 14TH, 1965 “Never too Late” was the title of the first play of the Footlight Players 1965-1966 season. The part of Harry Lambert, egotist owner and operator of the town’s largest lumberyard and 45 year old father-to-be was Jim Grubbs. One of the most active members of the Footlight Players was Mary Michl, who portrayed one of the leads, Edith Lambert. For the part of Charlie, the group turned to Larry Jonson, whose talent in humor allowed him to portray the confused son-in-law. Elaine Wagner faithfully portrayed Charlie’s wife, Kate. NOVEMBER 16TH, 1975 Coshocton now had a “Miss Hope” to represent the local unit of the American Cancer Society. She was Denise Olinger, 22, employed at the Intensive Care Unit at Coshocton Memorial Hospital. Denise volunteered to be Coshocton Miss Hope when it was determined she was the sole applicant for the honor. Her interest in the project is sincere and during her training she nursed a number of cancer patients. As Miss Hope for the county she was asked to give a two-minute talk on cancer. NOVEMBER 13TH, 1985 The Coshocton Middle school was going to be the site of a computer software and reference lending library. Lois Forsythe, computer coordinator for Coshocton City School District, noted the lending library had intended to serve a 40-50 mile radius around the city of Coshocton. The main aim of the software lending library was to further education. The lending library provided access to software for pupils to practice on without the parents having to spend money on the software. Individual membership for one year cost $15 per person, while family membership cost $25 a year. A school membership fee was based on the number of students who use the service. The library was established through a $5,000 grant contributed by the Coshocton Foundation which went toward the software and reference materials.

All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

NOVEMBER 14TH, 1955 The first step toward dial telephones in Coshocton was taken. Property on Walnut Street was chosen as a site for use by Ohio Bell Telephone Company. Property purchased by Ohio Bell had a total frontage of 100 feet on the south side of Walnut and the lots extended 176 feet south to an alley. The company erected a modern, fireproof, building which will house dialing equipment. Operators needed in operation of telephone services will probably work in the new building, but other personnel will be housed elsewhere.

Commissioners discuss supplemental insurance for county employees Mutual Health Services, which is a division of Medical Mutual. Colonial will not replace employees’ current insurance, but is designed to be a supplement only, if the employee chooses. The commissioners explained that even if the county decided to use Colonial as supplemental insurance for their employees, the employees would still have the right to purchase additional insurance on their own and/or reject Colonials benefit packages. The representative from Colonial stated that a benefit councilor would need to meet with at least 75 percent of county employees annually either individually or in a

It was only an informative meeting with a representative from Colonial. During the meeting, Doris Frank also submitted and the commissioners signed the investment portfolio and September bank statement. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

DENNISON - Trinity Hospital Twin City’s diabetes wellness program was recently named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), a National Accredited Organization (NAO), certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This will allow the people with Diabetes in and around the Tuscarawas County area to have increased access to high quality diabetes education services. Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. The program is comprehensive and taught by diabetes educators who have extensive training. Trinity Hospital Twin City’s Diabetes Wellness Program, located at 819 N. First Street in Dennison, offers diabetes education classes at locations in the following towns on a regular basis: Coshocton, Dennison, Dover, and Newcomerstown. To register for a class or to get more information, call (740) 922-7450, ext. 2177. As part of the hospital’s recognition of November as Diabetes Awareness Month, the hospital will provide a free educational seminar titled “Living Well with Diabetes” on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6 pm. Call (740) 922-7450, ext. 2124 for more information about the seminar. “We began offering diabetes education services in February of 2014 thanks to federal grant funding from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, and we’ve helped more than 400 area residents with diabetes so far,” said LuAnn Beavers-Willis, THTC Certified Diabetes Educator. “Applying for and becoming accredited was the logical next step to build on the success of our program.” “AADE’s accreditation assures that an accredited program meets the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support. Programs that meet this criteria are considered high quality and have been shown to improve the health status of the individuals who embrace the education and help to modify sometimes unhealthy behaviors, or simply provide the education that the person with diabetes has not previously received” said Leslie E. Kolb, RN, BSN, MBA, accreditation director for the diabetes education accreditation program. “Trinity Hospital Twin City’s Diabetes Wellness Program is exactly the type of program we envisioned when we set up our accreditation in 2009.” This project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under grant number G20RH26409 of the Small Health Care Provider Quality Improvement Grant Program for $378,000 with approximately 35 percent of the costs paid by nongovernmental sources.

COSHOCTON – Here is a brief roundup of Election Night 2015 highlights from the Nov. 3 general election. Village of West Lafayette The Village of West Lafayette has a new mayor after what was a pretty close race for most of election night. When the first round of results came in after the polls closed, Stephen R. Bordenkircher was only ahead of Timothy L. Tubbs II by one vote, 268 to 267. However, when the final unofficial results were announced the difference in votes had widened to 319 for Bordenkircher and 288 for Tubbs. “I’m excited,” Bordenkircher said. “I appreciate the voters support and wish Mayor Patterson the best in his retirement. My first step once I get in office will be to put my ideas to a formal plan and set goals. I’m going to do everything in my power to make my ideas come together. It’s going to be a busy four years because I have a lot of ideas to put into place.” Tubbs thanked everyone who came out and voted. “Everybody who came out and voted had their voices heard and I’m glad to see the participation from the community,” he said. “I also congratulated Mr. Bordenkircher on a good race. I jumped into this blind and learned a lot during the process. If I decide to do this again there are a couple of things I’d change, but all in all it was a good and enjoyable experience.” Tubbs hopes that he helped people realize that anyone who wants to make a difference in their community can run for an elected position. “It’s not about wealth or social status,” he

BEACON STAFF Voters in the River View Local School District had the opportunity to vote for a renewal tax levy and Superintendent Dalton Summers was very glad to see that 2,491 people said yes to it and only 1,397 said no. “On behalf of the River View Board of Education, all of our students, and all of the staff, I want to thank the River View community for again supporting this operating levy,” Summers said. “Our children deserve a quality education and our community expects it. This is just another great example of the support that River View citizens give to their schools. We use passages of renewal levies to gage not only the support we have from our public, but also the level of satisfaction they have with our fiscal responsibilities.” The passing of this levy helps secure the level of quality education that the district can provide to its students. “As many know, we will now focus our attention to our facilities,” Summers said. “We will be analyzing many community factors as well as increasing community awareness as to the actual condition, age, and barriers that our current facilities have. Please take time to visit any of our buildings.” According to Summers, River View’s board of education will be making some critical decisions this coming year. “These decisions can and will impact the community, our kids, and the future success of River View,” he said. “Again, we thank each of you for your past, present, and future support of the River View School District.” For more election results, visit www. coshoctoncounty.net/agency/boe/results.php.

COSHOCTON – The annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner at Coshocton High School will be making a change in food served this year. While turkey is always the center of a traditional Thanksgiving feast, due to the bird flu scare, the dinner will feature ham instead. “Our suppliers were not able to come through with the amount of turkeys we needed,” said Grant Fauver, principal at Coshocton High School. “But we will be serving all the other traditional fixings, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, and a pumpkin dessert.” This year’s dinner will be Thursday, Nov. 19 in the high school cafeteria and food will be served in three shifts, one at 5:30 p.m., one at 6 p.m., and one at 6:30 p.m. This is the 12th annual dinner and all the food items have been donated, so there is no cost to attend the event. Approximately, 75 to 100 community volunteers including students, staff, and parents work the three shifts. “It’s totally all volunteer and a way to give

back to the community and show them how much we appreciate them,” said Fauver. The dinner usually serves approximately 500 to 600 people annually. This year, the music department will be playing Holiday music during the dinner and afterward, the community is invited to stay for the high school fall play, “Around the World in 80 Days.” Each year, the Community Dinner helps bring people together to kick off the upcoming holiday season and is a time for great food and fellowship. “It’s such a great atmosphere,” said Fauver. “We seat you and serve you a warm meal. It gives you that sense of community. You look around the room and there’s laughter and smiles all around.” Take-out is also available and can be reserved by calling the high school in advance at 740-6229433. COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office is happy to announce that the Skelton Family stepped forward to help raise funds in an effort to replace outdated Tasers. In recent years the sheriff office’s Tasers have aged to the point that they are no longer serviceable. As these units no longer work properly, they have been removed from service and have not been replaced. This equipment is vital to the everyday policing of the community and to the safety of officers; however, the expense of replacing all of the units comes at a substantial cost. TREATS Roscoe United Methodist Church held a Trunk or Treat on Nov. 1. The event featured treats and food, In an effort to help the office reach its needed goal of $26,000, Jim, Bob and Joe Skelton from games, costume judging and prizes. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON Pomerene, Burns and Skelton have agreed to donate matching funds of up to $12,500. This extremely generous gift is profoundly appreciated. BY MARK FORTUNE COSHOCTON - By a unanimous vote, four members of the Coshocton School Board of Education approved the five year forecast as submitted during a special meeting and work session held at the board of education office on Monday evening, Oct. 26. The document will now be submitted to the Department of Education by Oct. 31. During the meeting, members of the board, superintendent Dr. David Hire and Treasurer Felicia Drummey discussed several items on the agenda including local real estate taxes, land values, state funding with a particular emphasis on student enrollment going forward in the district, personnel, capital outlays and the impact of WestRock closing on the district finances and enrollment. The board looked at possible future enrollment declines and how that impacts finances going forward. The state of Ohio currently allows $5900 per student. Also discussed was how post-secondary enrollment students impact the finances of the district. Dr. David Hire stated, “We always do what’s best for the kids.” One of the goals expressed at the meeting was how the district can keep students and how Coshocton City Schools can attract more students. “A lot of it is economics” stated a board member. It was discussed that the local planetarium committee would like to make a presentation at the next board meeting. Capital outlay with identification and a prioritization of needs was mentioned with Treasurer Drummey suggesting that the district possibly look at getting an assessment done at no cost to the district to establish needs and priorities. The athletic league conversation that has been in the news of late is in a holding pattern. Coshocton has been a long standing member of the ECOL. MARK@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

He’s lived in Tennessee since 1995 and has been in education for 16 years. This is Kirkbride’s second year as the principal of Thelma Barker. He was nominated for the Forty Under 40 award by his school’s PTO President Jeff Wall. “Again, it is an honor to be nominated,” Kirkbride said. “There are many great leaders in our district and I believe my work is a representation of what everyone in education does.” The Forty Under 40 award was sponsored by “The Jackson Sun” and the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce and honored people for making contributions to their industries, companies or community. “What I enjoy most is helping others be successful,” Kirkbride said. “This includes both students and adults. I take pride in making sure that folks feel appreciated.”
