Cheerleaders show school spirit COSHOCTON - The varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads for Coshocton and River View met at the Elks Lodge in Coshocton on Tuesday evening, Nov. 5 for dinner and conversation. WALHONDING - There are resources in the United States to help care for children with disabilities, but overseas that often isn’t the case.

“They aren’t always taken in and loved,” said Phil Maddux from the Walhonding Valley Church of Christ.

He has personally seen how these children are treated and wanted to make a difference in their lives.

“We are collecting medical supplies for Christian workers to use for humanitarian projects that help children with therapy,” Maddux said.

There are people willing and able to help these children, they just need the equipment to do it.

“America has a surplus of things like wheelchairs that people have out grown or were used by someone who was deceased,” Maddux said. “They are being scrapped or just sitting in garages and basements.”

The church started collecting items in June and now has 140 to 150 pieces of equipment.

“We have wheelchairs, crutches, walkers and just a lot of good therapy equipment,” Maddux said. “This has been a blessing to be part of. We want to give what we can and do what we can.”

Donations of new and used equipment

are always welcome and so are monetary donations to help with shipping. It will cost about $6,000 to send one container full of supplies, but other churches and organizations across the country also are helping with that fee. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call Maddux at 5755042.

“We will take items that are broken and fix them up because we want to be able to send over good, solid stuff,” Maddux said.

The church also is looking for a building to store the items they collect and be able to work on those that need repaired.

“We don’t want to stop with this shipment,” he said. “We want to continue to do this as long as the Lord blesses us and allows us to.”

About 15-20 people from the church gathered together Nov. 2, to help with the service project.

Pell said when asked what he thought one of the most pressing issues facing the city of Coshocton is, “I’m disappointed about the street levy. I don’t know that it’s the most pressing issue but I’m disappointed about the street levy obviously. I guess the most pressing is just making sure that we get the most out of our expenditures as far as services to the citizens and keeping a tight rein on spending until we can figure out a way to get some additional tax revenues in – I’m not talking about raising taxes certainly, hopefully more jobs with more people paying taxes would be the answer.”

Pell, who has a background in accounting, said of his prior experience, “I think budgeting, I have quite a bit of experience in industry as far as looking at budgets and that sort of thing, and running a business of my own, you’re always looking at the bottom line and I think that’s what the citizens want. They want to make sure they’re getting a good value for their tax dollar and the services that they’re receiving and just making sure that we’re not doing anything extravagant.

We want to take care of issues as they come up and I certainly want to be responsive to the citizens when they have a concern or an idea, hopefully of something we can do better.”

COSHOCTON - Incumbent Tom Grier was handily re-elected to his city council at large seat with unofficial results reported at the board of elections on Tuesday night Nov. 5. Glenn Mishler and Bob Pell were also voted in by Coshocton city residents to the two remaining at large seats. Five candidates were vying for three positions on city council: Tom Grier, Glenn Mishler, Bob Pell, Shane Pyle and Mike Cichon.

Mishler said, “I am on top of the world.

It’s very rewarding; the people who helped me get to this position have been terrific both with their hard work and their encouragement and support. There are so many people I would like to thank that I can’t because I would overlook somebody.”

When asked what he thought was one of the most pressing issues facing the city of Coshocton right now, Mishler responded, “Obviously jobs and employment is the most pressing issue but there is very little that a councilman can do about that. The street levy going down is a disappointment. I honestly did not expect it to pass but the fact that it lost by so few votes is very discouraging.”

Bob Pell was also elected to a council-atlarge seat. Pell said, “I feel pretty good. I was just hoping to slip in basically to the third spot and that worked out. I’m excited and ready to

COSHOCTON - As the weather turns cooler, the Coshocton is Blooming Committee has been making plans to help spruce up Main Street for the holiday season.

The committee is organizing three days to assemble the holiday baskets using greens from trees donated by Bill and Carol Freud. Lawn Barber is lending a hand with cutting down the trees and hauling the greens to the fairgrounds.

CIB is looking for volunteers to help fill the hanging baskets with greens Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 18-20. Work will be done from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the art hall.

Baskets will be hung in time for the Christmas Parade on Friday, Nov. 22. For information, call Connie Miller at 622-6569 and leave a message.

WARSAW – Hometown Pizza and Pub opened in late summer of this year and is located at 108 E. Main St. in Warsaw. Owned by Pat Matter, the pizza shop is open Tuesdays thru Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.

COSHOCTON - Bill Swails, who graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1979, is part of a Colorado company that recently had the pleasure of being featured on the Travel Channel.

The West Lafayette native is president and CEO of EarthRoamer, which makes four wheel drive motor homes know as Xpedition Vehicles that were shown on the show Extreme RVs. “It was great to see our product and employees on a national TV program,” Swails said. “We invited all EarthRoamer employees and their families to our factory for a viewing party. We had a great time watching the premier episode on a big projection screen.”

The company was founded in 1998, but at that time Swails focused on adventure travel, writing and photography. According to the company’s website, “At that time Bill was driving a custom expedition camper he built in his driveway to explore, travel and camp in remote locations. In 2002 it became clear that people were more interested in Bill’s custom camper than his photography and writing, so Bill designed the EarthRoamer XV-LT and started manufacturing Xpedition Vehicles.”

There are now seven different variations of the EarthRoamer XV-LT and they can accommodate two to eight people depending on which one you select.

November 14th, 1963 A new class at Coshocton High School gave young men the opportunity to reach for the stars. Seventeen male students had enrolled in the new astronomy class that had just begun at the high school. The class’ main goal was to offer an introduction of astronomy to these students who had just extensively studied the moon and who were now engaged in the sun.

The school’s new planetarium had often been utilized by these students and had been useful in locating astronomical bodies to view their distribution and motion patterns. A five-inch retracting telescope, a gift from William Coffman, had been utilized a lot by the class.

November 14th, 1973 Coshocton wanted to do its part to help alleviate the country’s energy crisis for the upcoming holiday season. Mayor S.G. Wharton had declared that all merchants would still be turning on their Christmas lights, but for fewer days than in previous years. According to Don Widder of the Ohio Power Company, the decision would also save about 25 percent of the power normally used during the holiday season. Chamber of Commerce director, John O’Reilly, said that most neighboring communities would be doing similar things with their Christmas decorations to help with the energy crisis as well.

November 18th, 1983 David Sycks, a 1982 Coshocton High School graduate, had attended a concert by famous trumpeter Al Hirt at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus. When Hirt asked for a volunteer from the audience, Sycks raised his hand and was chosen. Hirt originally wanted Sycks to lead a hand-clapping line behind him while he played “When the Saints go Marching in”. On a whim, Hirt handed Sycks his trumpet and got the shock of his life when Sycks started to play. He had no idea he had just handed his trumpet to a jazz performance major at Capital University.

He also received an M.A. in Art History at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in China and a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at Northwest Normal University in China. Yan Sun’s paintings are shown in solo exhibitions in art centers and galleries, as well as in museums such as Hayden Museum of American Art, Zanesville Museum of Art, Canton Museum of Art, and Museum of East Texas. His paintings have also been selected and received awards in numerous regional, national, and international art exhibitions. To recognize the contributions of Yan Sun to the museum and its community, the Zanesville Museum of Art named its “Diverse Cultures” Gallery the “Yan Sun Diverse Cultures Gallery”.

The Portrait Painting Demonstration will take place in the Montgomery Gallery where Living Waters, a juried exhibit by the Southeast Ohio Watermedia Society, is currently on display. The exhibit contains Sun’s work. The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this event with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

The portrait demonstration is included in the cost of the museum’s general admission: $4 for adults, $3 for students, and $11 for families (two adults with youth). COSHOCTON - Churches, organizations, schools and businesses set aside time this week to honor area veterans.

Wal-Mart held a program Nov. 9 that paid special honor to local World War II Veterans. They were presented with a plaque from the store and a flag from Annin’s. The family of Ray Border, who died in the current war on terror, also received the same honor and store employees who are veterans were recognized.

The local Wal-Mart store also collected notes of appreciation from the public to be shared with veterans and soldiers. Rich Wright from the VFW Post 1330 was given some of the notes to display at his organization and the rest were given to Girl Scout Troop 2527.

The Girl Scouts plan to add to the letters and send them overseas. This year they also sent cookies overseas to troops with the help of Post 1330.

The VFW paid for the shipping of the cookies and also volunteered to pay to send the notes of appreciation to the troops.

The court square was the site of the annual Veterans Day Ceremony which was held Nov. 11. The ceremony was hosted by the Coshocton County Veterans Service Commission and featured guest speaker Brigadier General Myron Ashcraft.

Ashcraft was born and raised in Coshocton County and retired from the service in 2004. During his speech he encouraged those in attendance to thank veterans for their service.

“We need to do this every opportunity we get to,” Ashcraft said. “It is because of veterans that we live in a free country that is the United States.

We also need to thank their families because they also sacrificed a lot.”

He also encouraged people to ask veterans to share their stories.

“It may take some work to get it out of them, but I bet they will tell you,” Ashcraft said. “It also will change your life to understand what it is that they did. Some of them will be funny and some will be tragic, but you will never forget their stories.”

Ashcraft hoped the veterans in attendance would comply with this request.

“You must tell your stories,” he said. “It’s the number one gift you can give to the next generation.”

“This levy passing makes me feel like the community is aware of what we do and the value of our services and that means a lot to us,” Williams said.

Ken Sheffield, director of Six County of Coshocton, was excited that the mental health and recovery program levy passed.

“We really appreciate this and I think it shows that the community appreciates what all three of our agencies do,” he said.

The passing of this levy will enable Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices, The Coshocton Counseling Center and Tompkins Child & Adolescent Services to continue to maintain services offered to help children with emotional and behavioral problems, men, women and adolescents whose lives are off course due to misuse/abuse of alcohol or other drugs and people with chronic mental illness, who struggle to maintain their freedom from life in an institution.

Chris Gallagher, site director at Tompkins also thanked the voters for their generosity.

“They realized there was a need for us to keep our services and not have to cut programs,” she said. “Now we can focus on our work and what we are all called to do.”

The last time the mental health and recovery programs levy was on the ballot, it needed three tries to pass.

“That was discouraging so we are so relieved it passed on the first try this time,” Gallagher said. “We got out and talked to the voters and made it clear what we do and that we are careful with our funds.”

Voters also recognized the need to maintain emergency services and passed the 911 levy.

This levy provides funds that pay some of the dispatchers’ wages and equipment and towers for the 911 system. It helps make sure there is someone there to provide assistance when people call 911 in an emergency.

Steven Oster, Coshocton County Board of DD superintendent, also was thrilled on election night after seeing voters support the Hopewell School levy.

“This will help us provide services from

birth through the end of life for everybody with developmental disabilities,” he said. “We are thankful voters chose to put their money toward us.”

Backers of the Coshocton City Street Department and Joint Vocational School District levies, however, were not as happy on election night. Both levies unfortunately failed.

“The streets are probably the number one issue we receive calls about at city hall,” said Mayor Steve Mercer. “We tried to make people aware of our needs and we came close to passing this. What we need to do now is evaluate what this means for us and get together and see where we go from here.”

He is not sure if the city will try to put another levy for street repairs on the ballot.

“It’s too early to say,” Mercer said. “We know the need is there, but we aren’t sure of the course of action we need to take. At this point, we need to evaluate what this vote told us.”

The Coshocton County Career Center is disappointed its levy failed, but officials at the school promise to keep building skills and changing the lives of children in the community.

“We do a lot for people and kids in the community,” said Superintendent Deborah Kapp-Salupo. “We just need a roof over our head that we can’t pay for right now. We will just keep doing what we can with what we have.

The kids are the most important thing though, and we want to have a good, solid building that will keep them safe.”

The career center plans to be back on the ballot in the spring and hopes at that time people are able to see how important its need for facility and security upgrades are.

“We hope to have more support then, but all of us truly understand that there were a lot of levies on the ballot and people had to pick and chose,” Kapp-Salupo said.

COSHOCTON - Voters threw their support to renewal levies, but weren’t as willing to back new ones on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Levies for the Coshocton City School District, senior citizen services, mental health and recovery program, 911 emergency service and Hopewell School all passed.

“We are excited,” said Todd Salmans, president of Coshocton’s school board. “It’s been a very good few weeks for us. We opened a new elementary school and now the voters have renewed our levy. We are very thankful for what the community has done to help us.”

Funds from the school district’s levy are used for general operating expenses such as personnel, maintenance, upkeep, utilities, supplies, books, etc.

“This will help us maintain what we already have going on,” said Superintendent Dr. David Hire.

The Senior Center also will be able to continue to maintain services thanks to the support of area voters.

“I’m elated,” said Jamie Williams, director at the Coshocton Senior Center. “This means our senior community will be able to get the services they need and we won’t have to tell people we can’t help them. This is awesome.”

The center offers many services to seniors including home-delivered meals, congregate meals, transportation, exercise classes and much more.

Tupper encourages people to check their closets for gently used shoes, or make a generous purchase for the benefit of others.

Shoes will be collected from now until Friday, Nov. 22, with a special collection emphasis on Wednesday, Nov. 20. how he and his friends struggled through deep snow and refused to let a broken elevator stop them from their destination. He also shared how surprised they were to come across two German citizens, one of them being the designer and operator of the elevator.

“They were wet and very exhausted and the German’s asked them in,” Pizzino said. “They made them tea and dried their socks and shoes.”

Her father and his friends relaxed with the Germans and talked to them the best they could despite their language barrier.

The Blue Star Mothers’ November display at the library also includes letters Pizzino found online from Civil War, World War I and the Vietnam War. “We wanted to focus on what the soldiers

and airmen brought home with them and the letters they wrote,” she said.

The local Blue Star Mothers chapter also recently donated about 20 books to the library that deal with issues military families face.

“We were looking for projects and searched the library’s catalog to see what books there were on military life,” Pizzino said. “When you are active military and not near a base you can experience a disconnection. When you are near a base there are always seminars going on about different issues and access to medical care and other things.”

The Blue Star Mothers discovered there were not books available to help military families with these issues so they worked with Eric Taggart, library director, to fill that hole.

“They span different age groups and concerns,” Pizzino said. “There are books to help kids understand where mom and dad have gone and help people deal with post deployment and post active duty issues.”

Cathy Meek, who also belongs to the Blue Star Mothers, said the children’s books would have been helpful when she had her grandchild when her son, who is in the U.S. Navy, was out to sea.

COSHOCTON – Marge Pizzino has a letter her father wrote to her mother during World War II and several other items from his time in the service that are part of the Blue Star Mothers display at the Coshocton Public Library.

The letter especially means a lot to her because it shows the human side of war.

“The purpose of our display is not to show the devastation of war, but the camaraderie between those who were there,” Pizzino said.

the state tournament, which led to the adoption of the “Dream Team” moniker but Gilmour’s past experiences played a role in the outcome.

“Ridgewood is a great team but our experience along with our execution and versatility really was just too much,” Gilmour coach Kelly Coughlin said. “We came in playing pretty fast and kept them out of rhythm. I don’t know if they ever truly found it.”

Amanda Lowery paced Ridgewood with nine kills and Laura Crawford chipped in six kills to lead the Generals, who finished the season 26-2.

Ridgewood’s only senior, Frazee chipped in five kills and seven digs in the final match of her volleyball career, Erika Michael had 22 assists and Morgan McDorman recorded 11 digs.

Sitting in front of the bright lights of the postmatch media interview room, a very emotional Frazee was unable to find the words to put a cap on exactly how the 2013 season unfolded, but Coach Crozier chimed in.

“I don’t think the whole experience has set in just yet,” she said. “But hopefully the girls understand what it means to get here and want to experience it again. We accomplished a lot of things and made school history, it was a great season.”

The Lady Generals finish the campaign with a 26-2 record, the best in school history.

“This team learned a lot about what needs to be done to be prepared to compete at this level,” said Frazee, who spent several minutes embracing and talking with sophomore Laura Crawford. “I told her thanks for everything because this was a season I will never forget for the rest of my entire life.”

DAYTON - A season with high expectations for the Ridgewood High School volleyball team culminated Friday afternoon.

Unable to solve a thunderous attack by a tall, talented front line, the Lady Generals fell to Gilmour Academy of Gates Mills in the Division III State Tournament Semifinal at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.

Bolstered by a 6-foot-3 senior Jess Jonata’s 16 kills, Gilmour ended the self-proclaimed “Dream Team’s” storybook season with a 25-17, 25-6, 25-16 decision.

But as much as Ridgewood was unable to produce it’s “A game” in the process, much of the credit should go to the Lancers, which reached the state finals for the third time in the past four years and the fifth time overall.

“We really zeroed in on trying to execute with minimal mistakes,” said Gilmour coach Kelly Coughlin, whose team improved to 23-6.

“We are trying to become hard to beat and I think today, our experience along with our execution and versatility really was just too much.”

Behind Jonata, Gilmour was virtually unstoppable at the net, combining for a .311 overall hitting percentage as they committed just 11 errors on 106 total spike attempts. Alexa Turk, a 5-10 sophomore, Laura Brzozowski, a 6-1 junior and Megan Polak, a 5-11 junior combined for 26 more kills against the Ridgewood defense.

“Gilmour played extremely well,” Ridgewood coach Kayla Crozier said. “They took us out of our offense and out of our passing game a lot more than we are used to, which made it challenging for us to do anything.”

Having committed to playing collegiately at the University of Iowa, Janota started a 4-0 run in the first set with a kill, which helped the Lancers move from a 6-6 tie to a 10-6 lead and Ridgewood was unable to creep any closer than four points the rest of the set.

Gilmour completely dominated the second set by rolling out to a 14-1 lead. In the third set, Ridgewood scored the first point but backto-back kills by Janota provided a lead that the Lancers never relinquished.

Ridgewood’s lone senior, Laura Frazee said the start of each set hurt the Generals.

“We just didn’t start out very strong,” she said. “It wasn’t really nerves, we approached this as if it was just another match but we just couldn’t get anything going.”

Crozier was pleased with how the team battled after a poor second set.

“That third set was proof that these girls never give up,” she said. “They are fighters and have been all season. I think if we could have had better passing today, the game would have been totally different. That wasn’t our normal passing and it was hard to come out of that.”

these children’s books would have helped him,” she said.

Taggart greatly appreciated the Blue Star Mothers help with research to find the perfect books to add to the library’s collection and for purchasing them.

“They were a pleasure to work with and I think we chose titles that will be most helpful to our military families,” he said. “We want to meet the needs of the community and I’m glad they pointed out an area that needed worked on.”

The books are on display at the library and are all available to be checked out. Each book also has a label explaining that it was donated by the Blue Star Mothers.

Taggart is hoping the display will also make more people aware of the local Blue Star Mothers chapter.

“Books are nice, but sometimes it’s also helpful to talk to people who have been there and gone through what you are,” he said.

The Soul’d Out Quartet is based out of Georgetown, Ohio and is a group of five young men who write and perform gospel music. They sing everything from contemporary Christian music to old hymns passed down through the generations.

The project was a joint effort between Coshocton is Blooming and the city school district. Public Meeting: There will be a public meeting of the Coshocton County Local Committee of the Ohio Public Works Commission at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the County Commissioners Conference Room, 401½ Main Street, Coshocton. Andy is a newly-qualified aircraft engineer with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). He has been training here in Coshocton for the last three years and they are leaving the states at the end of November in order to serve for the next eight years in Africa. Heather was recently in Uganda for a visit and will be able to give an insight into what they will be doing there and give a flavor of what life will be like. Holiday Baskets: The Coshocton is Blooming Committee has been making plans to help spruce up Main Street for the holiday season. The committee is organizing three days to assemble the holiday baskets using greens from trees donated by Bill and Carol Freud. Lawn Barber is lending a hand with cutting down the trees and hauling the greens to the Fairgrounds. CIB is looking for volunteers to help fill the hanging baskets with greens starting on Monday, Nov. 18, Tuesday, Nov. 19, and Wednesday, Nov. 20.
