COSHOCTON - Robert R. Brems, health commissioner for the Coshocton County Health Department, announced the health department’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Center, comprised of a well-child clinic and a prenatal clinic, will close its doors on Friday, Dec. 12, unless enough community funds are raised through a public appeal to cover the current deficit of funds.

This decision was made in a special board of health meeting held on Nov. 12. The current deficit of $20,000 must be raised before Dec. 12 in order for the clinic to continue services. That amount will allow the clinic to operate through the end of March 2015.

The clinic will seek an additional $25,000 in funding that will be needed to operate through the end of 2015. The current deficit has resulted due to a number of issues, including the reduction in the amount of grant funds available to support direct patient care, the reduction of other revenue streams, and the reduction of uninsured children in the county. Leane Rohr, Director of the Maternal & Child Health Center stated that the Maternal child Health Center’s prenatal clinic and Child Health clinic needs approximately $8,000 a month or $92,000 a year to operate.

Rohr, reports the health department has looked at all possible scenarios to continue the clinics without asking for additional community funding but at this time there is not a viable option. Rohr, states that community support has always been a big part of why this clinic has been able to remain open for so long.

If the funds do not become available and the MCH clinic is forced to close, staff will work with patients to transition them to other clinics or private care. The public will be updated on clinic status through local media and the health department’s website as more information becomes available.

COTC waives application fee during Ohio College Application Month

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON NEWARK - During the month of November, Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is waiving its application fee in recognition of Ohio College Application Month. Applicants may apply online now at http:// apply.cotc.edu for spring semester which begins Jan. 12, 2015, or autumn semester which begins Aug. 26, 2015, at no cost.

Ohio College Application Month was launched by the Ohio Board of Regents in partnership with school leaders across the state. Held in November, this is the first year that Ohio has hosted Ohio College Application Month statewide. According to a study by The Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, by 2018, 60% of all jobs in Ohio will require postsecondary training beyond high school.

Generating an increase in the number of students participating in this initiative would help support Ohio’s workforce needs and demands.

COTC offers over 40 associate degree and certificate programs in allied health and nursing, arts and sciences, business and information technologies, engineering technology and public services and safety.

Courses are available at four locations in Central Ohio and online. Free support services include tutoring, personal counseling, veterans’ support and disability services. Students may also participate in activities outside of the classroom such as social organizations, community service, student government and intramural and varsity athletics.

I was headed to Coshocton last Saturday, Nov. 1, when I ended up with a horrible flat tire on a chilly evening. I planned to call AAA, but was only there five minutes when someone stopped. A young woman with her kids stopped to see if we were ok. I told her I was going to call AAA and she went on her way, but shortly after that another vehicle stopped. This time it was a truck with two men and they said they would get the tire changed in five minutes. The kindness of all these strangers was greatly appreciated.

COSHOCTON – The Himebaugh Park was a popular topic at the Nov. 10 Coshocton City Council meeting.

Councilman Jim Baker shared parts of a letter from a local resident who is very concerned about the park.

Mayor Steve Mercer assured council that he spoke with that person in great length and that the city is taking steps to deal with the vandalism problems at the park.

With the help of the city law director, Mercer discovered that the Ohio Revised Code does have an ordinance dealing with criminal mischief. The ordinance states that, “No person shall: Without privilege to do so, knowingly move, deface, damage, destroy, or otherwise improperly tamper with the property of another.”

“There is no need for the city to create an ordinance if there is already one on the books that we can use to prosecute if necessary,” Mercer said.

He also clarified that the picnic tables at the park were only removed for the winter and that a rumor circulating that the city is going to start closing the park at 7 p.m. is not true.

“We put these monster big lights up so we could have recreation opportunities well into the night if necessary,” Mercer said.

Future plans, however, could still call for security cameras to be added to the park.

Robert Skelton, city law director, told council that he is fully prepared to prosecute people who are caught vandalizing the park.

“You shouldn’t feel bad about anything you are doing because you are just trying to keep it a safe, clean, nice place for those who use it and use it well,” Skelton said.

The Mayor also shared during the meeting that the city has not heard back from Kraft Foods on whether or not it has chosen Coshocton for its expansion project.

The meeting ended with an executive session being called to discuss the city’s contract with the sheriff’s office.

Securing the more than $20,000 for the forklift came about after staff, the port authority and Job and Family Services met more than a year ago to discuss ways to get students up to speed in the welding program. The outcome was to teach downhill welding.

“A component of the project was also a new forklift so the students would be able to learn how to move the materials for downhill welding and become certified, so it’s a whole package,” Skowrunski said.

Securing the downhill welding equipment was fairly easy, but the forklift took some work.

Skowrunski received funding from several sources, including the State of Ohio and the local Community Development Fund.

“Manufacturing is so important to our community and region. Our students are the future of our community and our workforce and we want to make sure they have the best equipment to be trained on so they’re able to go into the workforce,” she said.

Students will train on the new piece of equipment to obtain their forklift operator’s certification which makes them more marketable in the workforce.

“Pretty much everything in the welding industry is heavy equipment ... so every shop, manufacturing center, no matter where they go to work has a forklift of some sort,” Baughman said.

COSHOCTON - A new piece of equipment, acquired with the help of the Coshocton Port Authority, is giving students in the Metal Fabrication program valuable experience for future employment.

The new 2014 Toyota forklift was delivered

by Williams Toyota Lift out of East Sparta, Ohio, prior to the start of the school year. It’s a major upgrade to the old manual model students have been trained on in the past.

“Dorothy Skowrunski (executive director of the Coshocton Port Authority) really helped us out and worked hard on securing the funding,” said Nick Baughman, program instructor.

The new lift has a 3,500 pound capacity with safety features which prevent the machine from tipping, lifting too much weight and also features lights.

“Toyota produces one of the best forklifts out there. They’ve taken operator comfort, safety and vision into consideration. The newer model is automatic with all controls in front of the driver, whereas the older model was manual with various operating levers throughout the cockpit,” Baughman said.

The newer model also complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines – the old one didn’t.

Baughman added, “Most companies in the industry have newer models of forklifts; but we’re still training students on the older ones.

That way, if they (program completers) secure employment at a smaller business, they can safely operate older equipment as well.”

Under the terms of the definitive agreement, CHI becomes the sole sponsor of Sylvania Franciscan Health, which includes Franciscan Living Communities in Kentucky and Ohio, St. Joseph Health System in the Brazos Valley region of Texas, Trinity Hospital Twin Cities in Eastern Ohio, and the Trinity Health System Region joint venture in Eastern Ohio near the West Virginia border.

In addition, the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, will become CHI’s 13th participating congregation and continue to influence the health care landscape in this new role. The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, will continue to sponsor their health and human services ministries of Bethany House, Our Lady of Grace, Rosary Care Center, the Sophia Center, and Convent Park Apartments, as well as their education ministry of Lourdes University.

The congregation’s decision to transfer sponsorship of SFH is a recognition that health care is rapidly changing and moving to a new model – one in which organizations are expected to offer integrated systems of care for specific geographical populations. As a result, many smaller health systems are joining larger systems to expand their care within existing regions.

WARSAW – What’s in a name? The Warsaw Lions Club will be hosting its 57th annual Minstrel Show with the theme, “The Name Game” Friday through Sunday, Nov. 21 – 23 at River View High School. Friday’s and Saturday’s show will start at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s show will be at 2:30 p.m. The theme reflects the song by that title written and performed by Shirley Ellis as a rhyming game that creates variations on a person’s name. All the songs performed will feature names.

NOVEMBER 25TH, 1964 Universal-Cyclops Steel Corporation officials had announced plans to further expand its Coshocton plant by the installation of a Custom Strip department. It would consist of a 17inch Sendzimer cold reduction mill, a 17-inch bright annealing line, a two-high cold mill, a belt grinding line, and auxiliaries. The new facilities would enable Coshocton to produce a variety of special products in stainless and other high alloy grades up to 17 inches wide to close specifications and conditions. The plan called for the facilities to be located in two new buildings while employing an additional 50 people. It was expected to begin operation in late 1965.

1974

NOVEMBER 23TH, 1974 Jill Hess, a senior at River View High School, had been named the top youth walker in the 1974 CROP walk, raising $408.50. Hess had been participating in the annual walk since its inception in 1972 and was also named top youth walker in 1973. The CROP walk raised a total of $3,442.89 which was a great improvement after just $1,400 was raised the year before. Members of two local churches had also planted corn the previous spring and promised to donate all profits to CROP-CWS. Although the numbers weren’t final, the corn sales were estimated at $2,000. Camp Echoing Hills residents raised $270.58 by ‘hiking’ in their wheelchairs.

NOVEMBER 21ST, 1954 The residents of Coshocton were expected to have a new place to dine by the next March.

Construction had started on a new restaurant and drive-in eating place at the intersection of SR 76 and 621 on the Coshocton Canal Lewisville Road. Owners of the new restaurant, Dick Olinger, Joe Olinger, and Edward Rice had not yet selected a name, but had worked together to come up with a design for this 43x34 foot structure. Knotty pine would be used in the interior and would seat approximately 70 customers. A drive-in service would also be available and the place would offer a wide variety of food, specializing in chicken dishes.

NOVEMBER 24TH, 1984 Frank Addy, collection supervisor for the county litter program, said his workers picked up everything imaginable off county streets including a kitchen sink that summer. Addy mentioned other items that were unusual such as six refrigerators, 17 kitchen chairs, eight couches, four washing machines, a toilet, and a pop machine. The litter program, sponsored by the county commissioners, ran from May 1 through Oct. 31. Addy said that a total of 1,997 bags of litter had been picked up in the sixmonth period. The program covered 728 miles of state, county, and township roads.

“We started rehearsing the week after the fair,” said Nick Fischer. “You can’t do much in Coshocton County until after the fair is over. But we start planning for the show each spring.”

The River View Park Board will be serving a soup supper two hours before the show begins each evening. Tickets for the show are $9 and can be reserved by calling 622-5031. The cost of the soup supper is not included in the ticket price.

The show is the major fundraiser each year for the Warsaw Lions Club. The money raised is put back in the community, especially through the Lions Club eye glasses program.

This year’s show has more than 125 sponsors and has become a tradition within the community.

“It’s kind of like a reunion time for the community,” said Fischer. “A lot of people who have moved away from the community come back every year for this. It’s all local people entertaining local people. It’s also a family show, so you can bring your kids.”

COSHOCTON – Veterans throughout the county were celebrated in a variety of ways this past Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11. While many restaurants and organizations offered discount or free meals to veterans, Make A Difference (MAD) delivered free meals to home-bound veterans and their spouses at noon.

Approximately 27 home cooked meals were delivered to home-bound veterans in Coshocton County. Meals included spaghetti, a roll, applesauce, and a brownie. The Army Navy not only provided their kitchen to prepare the food, but all of the ingredients as well.

“I asked the Army Navy if they could prepare the food, I could deliver it and also pay for some of the ingredients,” said Karen Casey, founder of MAD. “They told me not to worry

about it, they would provide everything. The Army Navy is the third organization I went to asking if I could do this. I was turned down twice, so I really appreciate the Army Navy.”

Six volunteers drove throughout the county delivering meals.

The organization also has a Veteran Committee that drives veterans to and from a variety of places throughout the community.

“Veterans deserve to be honored and appreciated,” said Casey. “We want them to know, we don’t want veterans to be forgotten in Coshocton County. We feel they should be honored every day of the year, and Veterans Day is a nice holiday to remind us of that.”

MAD is also preparing Christmas baskets for veterans that will be delivered the week of Christmas. Anyone who knows a veteran who would appreciate one of these baskets should call or text Casey at 202-1024. Please include the veteran’s name and address. CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON – The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum invites families to explore science and the arts using food from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.

Food will be used to do science experiments, construction, printing, and painting, as well as to create secret messages, make sculpture and play.

Participants will even use food to make something they can eat. Activity stations will be placed in the Montgomery Gallery where the special exhibit about local food and resources, Local Bounty, is displayed. This interactive program is being presented by Gen X/Y, the museum’s young adult group. Gen X/Y members come from a range of occupations engineers, teachers, medical practitioners, etc., and will bring their special interests to this event.

Family Food Fair will be educational, interesting and lots of fun.

Cost for the event is included in the museum’s admission prices: Adults $4, students $3, and families (two adults plus children 17 and younger) $11. The event is free for Museum Friends with a family membership.

There were 48 in attendance with ham and chicken provided by the auction of homemade goods by Darrell Kilpatrick, great-grandson-in-law of the Tarrhs. Traveling the greatest distance was Marci Tarrh and Tommy Graham from Sebring, Fla. Marci is the great-granddaughter of the Tarrhs. She is also the matron. The patron of the group is Aaron Work with his wife Isobel, who winters in Alabama and is the great-grandson of the Tarrhs. VETERANS DAY Several honors were handed out at the annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11, on the court square. As of Veterans Day, Leach had surpassed the 1,300 mark and Stone’s total was more than 1,100.

“One thousand one hundred funerals are close to three years and one day of their lives spent honoring other veterans,” said Coshocton County Veterans Council Commander Willie Arnold. The Blue Star Mothers Chapter OH59 also received an award for all it has done for local veterans. “They are one of Coshocton’s biggest supporters of veterans,” said Jim Barstow, county veterans’ service officer. “They are truly a blessing to this community.” During the ceremony Becky Bowden, a member of the Blue Star Mothers, and United States Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant – Retired James C. Priest also spoke. Bowden encouraged veterans to share their stories and Priest reminded them that no matter where or when the served their sacrifices were not in vain. HONORING VETERANS Students and staff at Coshocton Elementary gathered in the gymnasium on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11 to honor veterans with special music from the Coshocton fourth grade class. They performed patriotic songs such as God Bless the USA, The Armed Forces Medley, and others. “Ultimately, the purpose was to honor those who served and died for our country,” said Aaron Mencer, choir director at Coshocton Elementary. “It’s an opportunity for children to have an exposure to what it means to be an American and why these services are so important.” The kids have been practicing for this special program for the past two months and gave an outstanding performance to be proud of. “We are grateful for their (veterans) service and I hope we can always remember what they’ve done for us and what they continue to do for us every day,” said Mencer. RVHS grad named district coach of the year PORTSMOUTH – Kayla Landaker’s first year as a head varsity volleyball coach at Notre Dame High School, a Division IV Catholic school in Portsmouth, was a pretty impressive one.

“I had a very talented group of girls with incredible work ethic,” said the 2010 River View High School graduate.

Landaker’s team finished the year 22-4, which was the most wins in school history, and won the first district title in school history. She also was named district coach of the year.

“Accomplishing all of this in my first year of coaching high school is incredible,” Landaker said. “I couldn’t have been more blessed to have walked into such a great group of girls and so many caring and helpful people at Notre Dame.

I look forward to continue to build the program there.”

She said the key to the team’s success was discipline.

“They were the type of girls that responded well to it and were very, very coachable and eager to learn,” Landaker said. “One of my seniors told me they were skeptical at first because they have had a different head coach every year of volleyball, but once they figured out I knew what I was talking about they were totally on board.”

She played volleyball for four years at

LANDAKER River View and was the starting setter for three.

Landaker also played three years in college at The University of Rio Grande, where she graduated in 2013 from the Holzer School of Nursing. She also has been coaching for four years.

BY BEACON STAFF “While I was in college I coached a club team every year and had a blast doing it,” she said. “I am very knowledgeable about the sport and enjoy making an impact on younger players and watching their skills improve throughout the season.”

Landaker noted that her coaches from River View made a big impact on how she handles her own team.

“Oh my goodness….the Bahmers and all of River View’s program had such a huge impact on me,” she said. “Actually, Cari texted me and congratulated me when she found out that I got district coach of the year, and I told her thank you of course, but it was all because of the drills they taught me. I still live by the dedication and discipline they taught me and have carried it on to my players. At first they weren’t sure; they thought I was a crazy lady when I told them to tuck in their shirts the first day of practice. But they responded very well and before long started doing even the little things without being asked.”

Landaker also believes in hustling and having fun.

“Winning is always great but as long as the player is coachable, gives 110 percent all the time and has fun doing it, then I’m happy,” she said.

Superior Pizza enjoying Main Street location COSHOCTON – Larry Caudy, owner of Superior Pizza, is pretty pleased with his new location.

“We do five times a day better here than we ever did,” he said.

Superior Pizza opened on Oct. 10 at 611 Main St. It had previously been located on Second Street, where it opened on Feb. 28.

“We needed dine-in,” Caudy said. “We had no space for that there and I also wanted to bring in a buffet.”

His new location has room for 72 people and a buffet full of salad, spaghetti, breadsticks and 12-14 different pizzas. Caudy also plans to eventually add soup to the buffet.

The move also allowed Caudy to expand his regular menu. Since moving, he’s added pastas, specialty calzones, specialty pizzas, can turn any sub (except the steak one) into a pizza and also offers burger and fries.

“I’m very, very happy here,” Caudy said. “I love to cook and love to prepare food.”

He started in the pizza business seven years ago in Lewis Center and is glad he finally landed on Main Street in Coshocton.

“I’m renting right now, but I hope to buy this building,” Caudy said. “It’s 4,000 square feet and has a basement that I’d love to turn into a game and pool room eventually.”

For the time being, customers can enjoy their favorite games on one of the restaurants five televisions.

Commissioners discuss ACA requirements Any county agency funded through the nongeneral fund will be charged annually based on percentage of premium. Information must be turned into the county by Nov. 14 and must be paid by Jan. 15, 2015. Checks need to be made to the Coshocton County Commissioners and need to be paid by the end of the year so that the county can make its Jan. 15, 2015 deadline.

Robin Schonauer, budget director, announced that the county does not have to increase its budget for 2015, but to anticipate a 10 percent increase for June. Agencies may not receive what they requested for June, but it will be close.

Commissioner Dane Shryock said the county is saving money on health insurance by having more county employees use generic drugs instead of name-brand drugs. People are also taking more of an interest in their overall health and preventive care.

Beck reminded those attending that there will be FMLA training on Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Frontier Power for county agencies.

The commissioners approved: • A motion to sign an amendment to the Coshocton County Commissioners Employee Health and Welfare Plan effective Jan. 1, 2015 as required by the Affordability Care Act (ACA)

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners met Wednesday, Nov. 12 for a departmental meeting with representatives from various county agencies. During the meeting, the 2015 budget and Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements were discussed.

Mary Beck, clerk at the commissioners’ office, explained new requirements for ACA insurance. Effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2015, any employee who is currently eligible for ACA will still be eligible in 2015 even if their hours are decreased or they go from a full-time employee to part-time. This means the employee and the employer still need to pay for their portion of the insurance as if the employee were still full time. This occurs each year unless there is a gap in employment for six months. If an employee is laid off, the employer is still responsible to pay 72 percent of medical bills for that employee through COBRA, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985.

Through the ACA insurance, the county is charged for each covered life on the plan.

Currently, the payment is $63 per life, and in 2014, there were 595 lives on the plan. The total pay to the federal government by the county for 2014 is $37,485. This is put into the federal government’s reinsurance fund.

Season opens with Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece at Ohio State Newark NEWARK - The Theatre Department of The Ohio State University at Newark is proud to present Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece, “The Glass Menagerie” at 8 p.m. with performances Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 20-22. KRAFT Kraft Foods announced last week that its Coshocton facility was picked for the site of expansion. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE COSHOCTON – Kraft Foods made its decision Thursday, Nov. 13 and Coshocton came out on top.

“We are happy to share that the Coshocton facility will be receiving the investment that has been under consideration and we will be hiring approximately 300 people and doing $40 million dollars in expansion at the facility over the next few years,” said Joyce Hodel, Kraft spokesperson.

For the past several months, the local Kraft plant on Second Street has been in the running for the expansion of an unknown product line along with the plant in Missouri. Kraft’s announcement included sharing that all of its bacon production will now be done in Coshocton.

“Since Coshocton is already dedication to bacon and two thirds of our total volume comes from there, it was the most cost effective site,” Hodel said.

Kraft’s Coshocton facility manufactures Oscar Mayer Bacon and it produces the vast majority of bacon for the Oscar Mayer business unit on its production lines. The local plant produces more than 10 different varieties of bacon sold in retail stores.

City Council, the Coshocton County Commissioners and the Coshocton Port Authority also worked together to offer Kraft a package of incentives to help them choose Coshocton.

“We want to thank the City of Coshocton and the state of Ohio for their support,” Hodel said.

Mayor Steve Mercer was ecstatic when he heard that Kraft chose Coshocton as its site to expand.

“Our hard work paid off,” he said. “It took months and months of work by a lot of different people to make this happen.”

American Indian Living: The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum invites preschoolers 2 – 5 years old to learn about American Indians through play, songs, crafts, stories and authentic artifacts. Classes will be on the four Tuesdays in November at 10 a.m. Each week, learn about one aspect of American Indian culture such as clothing, music and food. The program lasts thirty minutes but parents and children are welcome to explore the museum on their own for the remaining hour. American Indian Living is free and no reservations are needed. COSHOCTON – “It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years,” says Kirby and Amy Hasseman, owners of Hasseman Marketing & Communications.

Coshocton based marketing firm and promotional products distributor Hasseman Marketing & Communications opened its doors 10 years ago this month. In 10 years, although promotional products and video production have always been a part of the mix, Hasseman says the business has really evolved.

“We’ve had to change with the market.

When we started, we had to create a market for video. Promotional products is still the largest part of our business, but now, we have evolved and are working to help other companies with their social media. It’s fun to evolve to meet the needs of our customers,” says Hasseman.

Hasseman Marketing is located on Main Street in Coshocton and has three full time employees and a sales team of five.

WEST LAFAYETTE – “The Velveteen Rabbit” made such an impact on the current Ridgewood Drama class when it was in elementary school that the students couldn’t wait for the opportunity

to perform it for others.

“We did this play about eight years ago when the kids were in elementary school and they remembered being invited over here to see it,” said Jill Collins, co-drama director. “They wanted to pass it on and hopefully inspire elementary students to join drama when they get over here.”

The play was performed Nov. 13-14, in the school’s auditorium and featured 25 students with several others working behind the scenes.

One of the main roles in the production was played by Daney Rodriguez.

“I was Nana the woman who takes care of the boy (in the play) who makes a lot of messes,”

BY JOSIE SELLERS she said. “I have to clean up after him and don’t enjoy it.”

She, however, is the one who reconnects the boy with a velveteen rabbit he received as a gift and then tossed aside. After Nana gives it to him to sleep with one night, the velveteen rabbit becomes his favorite toy. They become inseparable until he becomes sick with scarlet fever and the doctor orders his toys to be burnt.

A fairy ends up saving the velveteen rabbit and turning it into a real rabbit.

Evan Youker had the pleasure of playing the Velveteen Rabbit.

“I enjoy getting to play different characters and act completely different than I do in real life,” he said.

Proceeds from ticket sales from plays help the drama class with production costs and license fees.

“The plays are a total team effort,” Collins said. “I like seeing everyone working together, helping each other learn and taking initiative.”

Upper Room Assembly and Worship Center reaching out to community COSHOCTON – The Upper Room Assembly and Worship Center wants to reach people beyond the four walls of its church.

“We believe as a church that we have to serve those outside of the church,” said Pastor Stan Braxton. “Most of the things we do here are to help others.”

Braxton opened the nondenominational church in the former Civic Center, at 331 Main St., in late August. Since then he and the 50 member congregation have already found numerous ways to reach out to the community.

During the fair the church hosted a

concession stand, it also is the site for giveaway days organized by MAD (Make a Difference – Coshocton) and will be a distribution site for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. They also have fun events for the whole family like Hot Wheels racing organized by Bryan Casey and Gilly Hanson, and movie nights, which they hope to make regular activities. There also is a youth group for those 12 to 18 (or until you graduate from high school).

“This all started with two families who had the desire to impact the lives of people outside of church,” Braxton said.

“I think that if you are comfortable playing with people you will be comfortable praying with them,” Casey said.

Another outreach activity that they did during Halloween was going to a Christian alternative to haunted houses.

“We had people from three other churches come with us and a couple of people even gave their lives to Christ that night,” Braxton said.

People from other churches and the general public are always welcome to attend activities organized by The Upper Room Assembly and Worship Center.

“It’s nice to do things with other churches because we all serve the same God,” Casey said.

Braxton intends to have the building remain a civic center and available for the public to rent.

“The Pomerene Center is working on fixing the outside wall (where the Park Hotel was) and we are paying for the inside wall,” Braxton said. “Once that gets fixed we can use the upper floors too.”

Casey can’t wait for that to happen.

“Teens don’t have a lot to do here so it would be nice to use the space to offer them something to do,” she said.
