MIRACLE ON MAIN The annual Miracle on Main Street parade, sponsored by Our Town Coshocton, headed down Seventh Street from the fairgrounds and wound its way down Main Street Coshocton on a bitter cold Friday evening, Nov. 21. Kids cheered as they saw Santa Claus riding atop the Coshocton Fire Department’s ladder truck as the parade concluded. Santa listened to the kids wishes at the gazebo following the parade. Here, 7 year old Taylor Keefer is asking Santa for an Xbox and Minecraft game. She said she enjoyed the parade and was glad to see Santa. John Leppla was in the role. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON October marks the one year anniversary of Americans signing up for Obamacare on the online exchanges. Last October, the Administration launched the “Healthcare.gov” website as the tool for Americans across the country to sign up for their new healthcare plan. The days and weeks after the website launched, countless problems occurred, leaving many Americans wondering about the safety and effectiveness of this $800 million website. After many failed attempts to sign up on my own, I feared this is the new normal. When signing up for a new healthcare plan, you want to have the peace of mind that your personal information is safe and you will be able to sign up for a plan you can afford. I had many concerns with the hastily launched healthcare website, and in September of this year, it was reported that a hacker breached HealthCare.gov’s security. Although officials say no personal information was taken, this breach never should have occurred. In a recent poll, 60 percent of voters said they want Obamacare to be repealed and replaced with a more conservative alternative. In late September of this year, Bloomberg Government conducted an analysis on the ‘Healthcare.gov’ website and found the costs have exceeded $2.1 billion. The enrollment confusion and cost continue to increase with this destructive law. The Administration has not disclosed the actual cost of the website and its many failures. Obamacare’s limitless red tape has small businesses struggling to survive in these tough economic times. During the law’s first four years, small businesses were hit with $1.9 billion in regulatory costs and spent 11.3 million hours working to comply with the law. The money and hours spent on trying to comply are devastating. Americans need patient-centered healthcare reform. The healthcare plan you choose should provide you and your family reliable coverage at a price you can afford. By giving individuals the opportunity to be in control of their healthcare, we can create a free-market system that is not riddled with problems. Now that Obamacare enrollment has been active for a year, are you better off? Are you more or less confident about the future of your healthcare costs and available coverage? Promises were made by the Administration and the politicians who voted for Obamacare such as keeping your doctor, easy access to affordable care and an end to worry about the high costs associated with previous conditions. These policies are draining Americans paychecks because rather than living up to the promises made, the Administration has decided to look the other way. Obamacare’s definition of the 30 hour “full time” work week has been detrimental for employers and employees who have seen their hours cut to comply with the law’s employer mandate. We can all agree that we need patient centered healthcare reform that includes free market principles, and encourages competition in both the insurance market and the medical provider community. Historically, our competitive free market system, coupled with commonsense regulations has provided Americans with services that are costs competitive and reliable. I believe America’s healthcare system can be accessible and provide quality, affordable, care if common sense reforms are made. SEE ‘GIBBS’ ON PAGE 30

“This is the first time we ever bought a ticket for this,” said Debbie Hilliard, Wayne’s wife. “We didn’t expect to win. We just felt it was a donation to a worthy cause.” The couple found out about the raffle while at the V.F.W. 1330. “We were really excited and thankful to win,” Debbie said. Marilyn Bechtol, who is Deeds’ sister, said she sold a lot of tickets in the V.F.W. “They were very generous to us,” Bechtol said. Dawn Shook, one of Deeds’ daughters, is impressed with how much the community has gotten behind the raffle held to support her mother’s scholarship. “There are business people supporting this cause that don’t have a firsthand interest in it,” Shook said. “Our community is fantastic.” This is the second year for the raffle and the first time someone local has won it. Shook said 50 percent of the proceeds went to her mom’s scholarship fund and 50 percent went to Edison High School to help a lady she partners with. “Five hundred to 600 tickets total were sold,” Shook said. “It was our best year ever. I thank the community for all of its support for our cause.” According to The Coshocton Foundation, the Carol A. Deeds Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Carol’s children and other family members to honor her memory. The intent of the fund is to provide a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from one of the county’s four secondary schools (Coshocton, Ridgewood, River View and the Career Center). The award rotates among the schools. “She was all about education,” Bechtol said. “She would be very proud that we are doing this.”

RAFFLE WINNERS Debbie and Wayne Hilliard were the winners of the Ohio State raffle package that supports the Carol A. Deeds Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Coshocton Foundation. BEACON PHOTO BY JOSIE SELLERS Deeds passed away in 1997 at the age of 46 due to a lung problem, but the family didn’t establish her memorial scholarship until several years later. “We took a while to think about what we wanted and what we thought her name represented,” Shook said. “She was a humble leader and was pretty quiet, but even though it was a challenge for her to take a shower because of her breathing problems she still volunteered at church, the fire department, the Salvation Army and donated to United Way.” Bechtol agreed with her niece. “She (Carol) was always helping and never asked for anything in return,” Bechtol said. The family plans to continue on with its OSU raffle fundraiser. Shook said she believes next year there will be two packages given away. Tickets will start being available in the spring and are $10. “My Aunt, Uncle and Mom didn’t have the opportunity to further their education, but they knew the value in helping others get there,” Shook said. “I think my sister (Denise Smith) and I and our children can learn a lot from what we are doing. 1954
NOVEMBER 30TH, 1954 Walter Clark was born to be a mail carrier just like his father, Martin, and his brother, Charles. After 46 years of carrying mail on Nellie Route 1, Clark was retiring. At the age of 23, Clark began his then 18-mile-long mail route on horse and buggy. When the snow would get too deep, he delivered mail on horseback. He traded in his horse and buggy for an automobile in the early 1920s. Gradually, his route increased to 41 miles. On days when his brother was sick, Clark used to deliver on his mail route as well. He planned on spending his retirement farming and raising sheep. He was to be replaced by Glenn Dawson.

COSHOCTON – Coshocton County Firefighters and their families are helping make the Christmas wishes of area children come true. The Coshocton County Firefighter Toy Chest took applications last week from Coshocton County low income families and will do it’s best to help make Christmas merry for children ages newborn to 15-years-old. “When the Coshocton Jaycees quit doing it years ago the firefighters took it over,” said Laura Drake, who coordinates the program.
1964
NOVEMBER 28TH, 1964 Old St. Nick delighted children and adults alike at the Coshocton pre-Christmas parade. According to Police Chief Ed Kreider, more than 10,000 residents lined Main Street for the parade, 1,000 of those being children. Fire chief Richard Farver headed the parade which included high school bands, new model automobiles, fire trucks, and ended with Santa in his sleigh. Artificial snow was thrown on the streets from Santa’s little helpers and was also placed around the huge community tree in the courtsquare. The parade was a kickoff celebration for the local holiday shopping and had the most attendance of any other year.
1974
NOVEMBER 30TH, 1974 Most people don’t think about air conditioning in November, but that’s exactly what was on the county commissioners’ minds. A Cincinnati firm had recently conducted a study on the feasibility of putting in central air in the Coshocton Hospital and its affect on the electrical system. The study was tied into an ongoing look at energy use at the hospital. Ongoing at the time was an investigation of heat loss through windows in the hospital. The firm said that regardless of whether or not they got central air, the old windows needed to be replaced as they closed poorly and were responsible for most of the heat loss.

NOVEMBER 30TH, 1984 Grange members across the county joined Plainfield Grange, the first grange in the county, in celebrating its 100th anniversary. During the celebration, Kathleen Bair was honored as a 70year member. Bair joined the grange in 1914 when she was 13 years old. She remembered the grange was the primary source of fellowship for rural farm families and she worked hard to learn the rituals that qualified her for membership. She remembed doing a three-act play about rural life for other grange members and a one-act play at the county fair. At the time of the celebration, the grange had 112 members. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.
“The firefighters, ladies auxiliaries, their families all help out. I think last year we had 40 some people come help and we also had people from the sheriff’s office.” In 2013, 257 families were helped and this year 187 families signed up for a total of 494 kids. “It makes you feel good to know that these children are going to have Christmas,” she said. Drake said they guarantee children one toy, but in the past they’ve been able to do at least three. “All the toys we give out are donated from throughout the community,” she said. When families fill out their applications they are asked to show proof of income and allowed to list what their children are asking for or would like. “We try to fill what they like,” Drake said. “Sometimes it’s a little hard, but we do our best. We also try to buy everything we need locally.” Anyone who would like to donate a new toy can do so at the Coshocton Fire Department on Seventh Street and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walhonding Valley Fire Department on Bridge Street in Warsaw. Drake said there also are boxes at the Coshocton and Warsaw Dollar General, Rural King, Big Lots and Dairy Queen. Wrapping paper and tape also are welcome. “We try to give at least one roll of paper and tape to each family so they can wrap the gifts,” Drake said. Donations should be dropped off by Monday, Dec. 15, but Drake said they will take items through the end of the year. “We try to save things so if there is a tragedy around the holidays the items are there if needed,” she said. Drake greatly appreciates the support the community has given the Coshocton County Firefighter Toy Chest over the years. “It means a lot,” she said. “Without the community this would not happen.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Children Services looking to make Christmas bright for children COSHOCTON – Children Services really appreciates the support of the community when it comes to spreading holiday cheer to children involved in their system. “There are faithful people that help us and we know we can count on every year,” said Anne Randles, administrator for the agency. “Our Christmas program is for people that are already on our case load. We help them first and if we have slots available we will open it to others.” Families share what their children are in need of and if there is a special toy they are interested in. The child’s first name, their sizes and special interests are then put on tags that are distributed to different places for people to select and purchase gifts. The gifts are returned, typically wrapped, to the organization or business where the tags were handed out and then taken back to Children Services to be distributed. One place that has helped Children Services for at least 10 years is West Lafayette Methodist Church.
“The weekend after Thanksgiving, we will put our tree up with all the kids’ names on it,” said Jean Mercer, who helps the church’s outreach ministries coordinate the project. “We’ve always taken 25 names, but last year there were people who wanted names but didn’t get them so this year we took 40. Hopefully they all go out.” Tiffany Mills, intake worker, said the agency plans to help around 90-100 children this year. “It’s a way to help the parents and make kids happy,” she said. Any business or organization that would like names to purchase gifts for is welcome to call Mills at 295-7501. “Once the gifts are purchased and wrapped we distribute them to the family,” Randles said. “A lot of families struggle to make ends meet and Christmas is just an added stressful and difficult time.” She also mentioned that there are other ways to also help families in need. “We have a lady who bring in hats and gloves

#GivingTuesday inspires people to give back to community CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON - United Way of Coshocton is joining countless other communities, non-profits, businesses and individuals in #GivingTuesday. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take a collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to charities and causes they support and help create a better world. Taking place Dec. 2, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday aims to harness the power of social media to create a national movement around the holidays to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are synonymous with holiday shopping. “#GivingTuesday reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not consumerism,” said Lyn Mizer, director of the United Way of Coshocton. “We can give time, talents and resources in a way that makes an impact on not only ourselves, but our families, our neighbors and our county. Coshocton County has always been a family town that pulls together and tries to do what is good and right. #GivingTuesday fits well here and everyday can be #GivingTuesday in Coshocton.” To learn more about #GivingTuesday, visit the website at www.givingtuesday.org or the Facebook page is www.facebook.com/ GivingTuesday.

GRANDPARENTS Coshocton Christian School was blessed to have the parents and grandparents in school on Oct. 17, for Grandparents’ Day. The day began with a delicious breakfast provided by the parents and was followed by a program featuring all grades preschool through high school. The junior high and high school ensemble began the program. The lower grades then presented a program reminding us all of how very special grandparents are. The day ended by the students showing off their displayed work and taking their grandparents around to their classrooms. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

COSHOCTON – If you are looking for a unique handmade Christmas gift for that special someone on your list, Coshocton is the place to shop. Becky Lowe opened Ohio State of Mind this past May in Roscoe Village. The store started with just 30 vendors plus Lowe’s Liberty Pottery and now features the work of more than 100 Ohio crafters and artisans. “They come from all points of the state, but at least 37 of them are local” Lowe said. The store features a variety of homemade items such as jams and jellies, candy, jewelry, lotions pottery, artwork and much more. There also are numerous gift ideas for Buckeye fans. “Average prices are $10-$25, but you can find candy for $1 and food items for $3-$5,” Lowe said. Wooden items also are popular. “A Fresno couple does intarsia pieces for us,” Lowe said. “It kind of looks like a puzzle, but all the wood is its natural color.” The wooden works of art are made by Rick and Jane Mautz who Lowe said currently has Brutus the Buckeye for sale and a beautiful snowman. Ohio State of Mind also has a nice selection of merchandise, such as shirts, sweatshirts and glasses, which celebrate the state of Ohio. “There has been a movement all over Ohio to support the state and even our town with the Mayor’s new campaign,” Lowe said. “It’s about paying it forward. A lot of the vendors have small family business or small farms and can’t afford their own retail store so this gives them a place to have a real impact.” Visitors to the store have been impressed with the collection of handcrafted items. “They’re amazed that everywhere they look it was made in Ohio,” Lowe said. “You don’t have to worry about where something was made when you come in here. It’s overwhelming that the idea of it (being Ohio made) was implemented so quickly.” She also works with a store in Westerville that sells handmade products. “I’ve sent some Coshocton vendors to her and that has given them exposure that they wouldn’t have gotten on their own,” Lowe said. Another great part of the store is how the products are displayed. “We have a wonderful mix of items (set up),” Lowe said. “You can get your jam and then also add a jelly jar to your purchase.” While browsing the store, customers also will notice that items can be custom ordered, but that must be done in the next three weeks to have the product ready for Christmas. “Our (Liberty Pottery’s) grandparent plate has been really popular and personalized mugs are always a nice gift,” Lowe said. She believes Local Bounty also has benefited from Ohio State of Mind. “People will shop here during the week and then go over there when they are open,” Lowe said. “It’s helped give them more exposure since we SEE ‘COSHOCTON GIFTS’ ON PAGE 15

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 also have quite a few of their vendors here like Kristi Adelsberger who has soap, lip balm, granola and other items.” Commonwealth Americana, located at Kiefer’s Florist in Roscoe Village, offers 50 different local vendors that create unique and handmade gifts for everyone on your Christmas list. “Our most popular items would be hard to find items for men,” said Ed Kiefer. “We have wooden boxes, which can be used as a catch-all for remote controls and other items. We also have two vendors that make different kinds of pens, a new expanded line of soaps, bath salts, and body lotions. There’s also the always-popular Whitewoman Pottery which feature their holiday pattern and regular patterns. We also have specialty Christmas cards and gift cards, centerpieces out of metal candle holders, jewelry, and glassware.” Commonwealth Americana was created to encourage, promote and support local arts and crafts. “A lot of people wouldn’t be displaying if we hadn’t brought them along,” Kiefer said. “People take pride in buying something well-made from their own town.” Local Bounty, Coshocton’s year-round farmers market, also has some great gift ideas that are locally made. “Vendors have started stocking the store with many gift ideas...after all, what’s better than the gift of food or something handmade,” said Marissa Mullett, market manager. Right now there are a lot of gift set options and Mullett said some feature honey, handmade soaps and other body products, hot chocolate mixes, nut butters and more. She also noted that much more will arrive in the weeks to come. “Food items make perfect gifts for individuals who appear to have everything,” Mullett said. “We also have numerous ‘small’ food items that are great gift ideas. Instead of stocking up on inexpensive big-box store gifts for teachers, bus drivers, card club members, etc. come to Local Bounty and grab something much more unique.” Local Bounty also has great stocking stuffers such as lip shop balms, soaps, gift cards and jellies. “By purchasing gifts from our vendors, you’re directly supporting individuals who live, work Located in Historic Roscoe Village and do their business in Open 7 days a week • Phone 740-623-2383 our community,” Mullett said.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING Ally Stein and Dylan Helmick served up drinks at the 11th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The dinner was held Nov. 20 at Coshocton High School and offered a traditional holiday meal to the community. Stein and Helmick are both sophomores and this was their first year helping with the event. “Last year I came to eat, but it feels better to be volunteering,” Stein said. Cathy Waibel, who organizes the event, greatly appreciates the help of the various clubs and teams at the school. “It’s all about each and every one of these kids helping and the people sitting here eating,” she said. Waibel said they were planning on feeding around 650 people like they did last year. The evening also included entertainment by the music department and the chance to see the Coshocton High School Theater Department perform “Death and Taxes.” For more photos, visit www.coshoctonbeacontoday.com.
