A LEG UP

A LEG UP If you added “Trying to get” to the beginning of this, that’s what consumers did in droves on “Black Friday”. Trying to get a leg up on those holiday purchases of course. According to media reports, sales were up an average of 9% nationwide for what is traditionally known as the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. We couldn’t resist this display – which is the front window of Linnett’s Flowers on the Square and coincides quite nicely with the upcoming play, “A Christmas Story” at Triple Locks Theater. So in keeping with the theme of The Beacon’s weekly gift guides and shopping local – get out there and support local businesses – just don’t shoot your eye out! And if you’re driving up Walnut Street, you may see another one of these leg lamps in the 1000 block . . . and we hear that this family has a special “leg lamp lighting” ceremony every year. That’s cool. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

Nellie Food Pantry John and Sharon Kirch are both pastors of God’s Eternal Love Fellowship in Nellie. They started the Nellie Food Pantry (Open Pantry Nellie) 7½ years ago to serve county residents. “We struggle to keep coming up with enough money to keep going each month,” said Sharon. Open Pantry Nellie received help and contributions from area churches, organizations and individuals, including the River View Ministerial Association, Interim Health Care, Warsaw and Union Elementary Schools, Roscoe UMC, Prairie Chapel Church, Gospel Hill, Dutch Run Church, New Life Ministries, AMVETS, Tiverton Homemakers, Walhonding Valley Grange, Warsaw Presbyterian Church, Nellie Chapel UMC and Coshocton Board of Realtors. “Many of these contribute other much-needed items such as toiletries, feminine napkins and toothpaste,” said Sharon. “We also couldn’t do what we do without the support of our congregation of approximately 80 at God’s Eternal Love Fellowship Church. They’ve taken on a big project here.” The Nellie Food Pantry distributes food once a month. “We usually feed from 575 to over 700 people each month,” said Sharon, “representing over 224 families in the county. We’ve noticed a lot of new people who feel they have no choice but to come in for the food. Many of them have lost their jobs and have been working a couple of part-time jobs but it’s just not enough. This time of year, the numbers typically go up. Often they numbers fall a bit in January most likely because people aren’t able to get out due to weather.” They order their food supplies from Mid-Ohio Food Bank. The monthly needs require around 15,000 – 20,000 pounds of food each month. “We try to give out enough for 15 meals per month per person,” said Sharon. “It costs us around $1,400 each month to purchase enough food for the distribution needs.” The financial contributions they get can go much further since they are able to purchase the food at such reasonable costs through the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Every cent contributed goes to the pantry to serve the county. Sharon says they will also take USDA processed deer meat. “We are so thankful to all our contributors and volunteers,” said Sharon. “Without them we could not exist. We distribute approximately 9,000 meals each month. That’s over 108,000 per year. We like to see the kids get involved in donating such as through the school food drives. It is good education for the children to see the boxes of food pile up and then get delivered to us for distribution to those in need.” “Right now, we really need financial contributions,” said Sharon. “Volunteers are also needed. When the truck comes in we usually need 20 to 25 helpers to pack up the food,” said Sharon. For more information or to contribute, contact God’s Eternal Love Fellowship at (740) 824-3958. Send financial contributions to God’s Eternal Love Fellowship, 24890 Township Road 444, Warsaw, OH 43844. On the check’s memo line write ‘Open Pantry Nellie’.

Coshocton and they provided toys for over 90 children. The food pantry in Nellie is her main source for collecting names of children, ages infant to 18, in the county with the need for the toys. “Last year we served over 180 kids,” she said. “And this year we have requests for 280 kids. I also work closely with the local firefighter’s toy chest to make sure all the kids in the area are taken care of.” Olinger says she especially needs toys suitable for boys and girls age 9-12. Price range for the toys are up to $25. “I try to give three or four gifts per child,” said Olinger, “with the largest gift in the $25 range and the others in the $10-$15 range and under.” “If you or your organization has a large amount of new, unwrapped toys, we can also arrange to pick them up for you,” said Olinger. “Annin and Co. has been great to help us by supplying trucks and labor. Christmas Eve.” They are collecting new, unwrapped toys at various drop-off sites throughout the county including the Family Dollar, Big Lots, the Home Loan Savings Bank locations, and the new Peddicord Rice Auction Realty office at 316 N. Third Street in Coshocton, or contact Olinger at (740) 202-0150 to arrange pick up of large quantities of toys. There are also financial donation cans at Arby’s, Crowtown Pizza, Dominoes Pizza, Papa John’s and East of Chicago Pizza. Other supporters and sponsors for Toys for Tots include Toys R Us, Ridgewood Lady Generals Booster Club, Jacobs Vanaman, Coshocton County Beacon and the Fresno Farmers Market. “I also want to thank the girls at Peddicord Rice,” said Olinger. “Debbie, Heather and Teri are a huge help to me.” Olinger says that working with Toys for Tots has been very rewarding for her. “This is definitely for the kids,” she said. “We’ve had so many positive comments from parents thanking us for the fantastic Christmas we have provided for their kids. We can definitely use the help of the community. If your business, school or organization would like to do a fundraiser for us, we would definitely appreciate it.” For more information or to send financial contributions to the Coshocton Toys for Tots, contact Christi Olinger, Peddicord Rice, 316 N. Third St., Coshocton, (740) 202-0150. The national Toys for Tots organization has been serving kids for over 80 years. For more information about Toys for Tots, visit www.toysfortots. org. Salvation Army Captain John and Tricia Cornelius feel blessed to be serving in Coshocton the past four years. “The caring in this community is unprecedented in this world,” said Capt. John. “This community gives more than any other community we have been part of. We are so thankful for the heart and spirit of God in this community. Even though people are struggling, the folks here see the need and meet that with help. “We have partnered with various other programs this year to better use the community’s resources. For example, the Salvation Army Christmas Castle is to buy clothing for children. We also distribute food baskets and the firefighters Toy Chest is for toys. We are blessed that all these people in Coshocton are helping in any way they can.” The Salvation Army is a United Way Agency. “Approximately 1/3 to ¼ of our budget comes from United Way funds,” said Capt. John. This time of year, the Salvation Army is very visible with kettle ringers posted throughout the area collecting donations. “All of the money raised from the kettle collections goes toward feeding people in the area,” said Capt. John. “We typically raise around $23,000 through the kettles each year. This year, we have kettles at Wal-Mart, Dollar General in West Lafayette, Baker’s IGA in Coshocton, Big Lots, Buehlers, Walgreens, and Woodbury Outfitters. We are so thankful to all these businesses that let us stand there and collect.” The kettle collections will take place through Dec. 24. They are always in need of volunteers to help with the ringing. Contact the Salvation Army Youth Pastor, Brennen Hinzman at 622-0971 to volunteer. The Salvation Army Christmas Castle Project on WTNS is assisting nearly 400 Coshocton children ages 5 to 15 buy winter clothing at a budget of $29,400. The shopping days are Dec. 8 and 9 and volunteers are still needed. “We would be grateful to any help we could get in taking the children shopping,” said Capt. John. “Call the Salvation Army if you wish to volunteer.”

Coshocton County Fire Fighters Toy Chest Laura Drake is the volunteer coordinator for the Coshocton County Fire Fighters Toy Chest. This year the Fire Fighters Toy Chest will serve 620 kids in the county, ages infant to 16 from over 275 families. “We have around 100 more kids than in the past,” said Drake. “We get our names of children in need in the county from Open Pantry Nellie food pantry. Dairy Queen in Coshocton has been a tremendous help. They are taking financial contributions there and it is also a toy drop off location. We are also grateful to the fairboard for allowing us to use a building there each year to package the toys.” Drake says the firefighters get together about a week before Christmas and get the toys ready to distribute. “We ask for new unwrapped toys to be dropped off at the City Fire Department, the Walhonding Valley Fire Dept., NAPA in Coshocton, Baker’s IGA and the Coshocton Dairy Queen by Dec. 14,” said Drake. “Some of the suggested items include new unwrapped jewelry, baby dolls, dinosaurs, art supplies, dress up items, remote control cars, make-up and educational items.” The Toy Chest also accepts monetary donations and contributions of wrapping paper and tape. Contributions are taken throughout the year. Checks can be sent to the Coshocton County Fire Fighters Association - CCFFA, P.O. Box 158, Warsaw, OH 43844. The Salvation Army also needs volunteers to help the week of Dec. 13 to pick up and package food from the food drives at various schools and churches. “We are assisting 435 families this year with food for the holiday,” said Capt. John. “We supply the staple items and they also receive a gift certificate for Collins Meat and Food Market. The various community food drives help us provide the extra items in their food boxes. The local schools are a huge help to us with food drives and helping to pack boxes.” Volunteers are also needed Dec. 20 as they package and distribute the food and toys. “We definitely don’t have a shortage of volunteer needs,” said Capt. John. “We always need food, clothing, financial support and food items. We also have the Adopt a Family program going on this year through around Dec. 13. Area churches, individuals and businesses who want to get involved by providing for the needs for a family this Christmas can call the Salvation Army and ask for Capt. Tricia.” Even though they are more noticeable during Christmas, the Salvation Army meets needs throughout the year and can always use assistance with their clothing room and food pantry. “It is always so hard to say no and sometimes we just don’t have the funds to help everyone,” said Capt. John. “It is becoming very difficult to meet the demand for food. That is a nationwide struggle. Many people also come to us with no place to stay. There is a high need for homeless shelters in the area. We have a lot of good people who have lost jobs are coming to us for help.” Capt. John stresses that it is important to give to all the area food pantries since not any one of them can meet all the needs. “We are all working together to take care of the needs in the community,” he said. To volunteer or contribute to the many Salvation Army projects including their youth program, food pantry, clothing room and general assistance, contact them at (740) 622-0971 or (740) 622-2386 or send checks to Salvation Army, 219 N. 4th St., Coshocton, OH 43812.

Coshocton Community Choir to present, “Rise and Follow” ‘Rise and Follow’ is the theme of the Coshocton Community Choir’s Festival Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Over 200 musicians from throughout central Ohio will be performing at Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium. Musical selections during the 90-minute concert span the centuries as the choirs, under the direction of Charles R. Snyder, perform a mix of sacred and secular choral music. Snyder says he never is sure where the inspiration for the Christmas Festival concerts will come from. “Often they don’t come as soon as I wish,” he said. “This year, the spiritual, Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow, kept running through my head as I was driving back from Lake Erie in August. I began to think about how the words, ‘rise, and follow’ described the response of all the characters in the Christmas story such as Mary’s response to the angel’s announcement, Joseph’s response to the message he received in a dream, the shepherds’ response to the message of the angels, the kings’ response to the star…and the response we should have to the story. I thought it would be a worthy theme to explore in this year’s concert.”

a place for great Christmas gifts too!

Snyder says that choosing music for the concerts is a by jan myers challenging but rewarding task. He tries to select music that tells the Christmas story and is a good fit for the choir. “I am always looking for new arrangements to help keep the concerts fresh,” he said. “Learning new works is a little like making a new friend. I’m enjoying getting to know Randall Stroope’s There Is No Rose that the women are singing early in the concert, and Craig Courtney’s setting for men’s voices, Where Shepherds Lately Knelt. I think everyone in the choir enjoys Jack Schrader’s setting of Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow. Mr. Schrader said he heard a big band sound as he was arranging the spiritual, and although the piano accompaniment has some of that, I’ve asked trumpet player, Don Kason, to add some brass, bass, and percussion to give it the big band feel.” The concert features the 100-voice adult choir, the Coshocton Children’s Choir, the Coshocton Youth Chorale, the Roscoe Brass Ensemble and piano accompanists Dickie Barrick and Mark Wagner. Other instrumentalists include Tom McLeish, timpani; Linda Gardner, oboe; Heather Smith, flute; and Steve Snyder, bass. Gordon Kendall and Marialice Mauch will be the narrators, and Dr. Allan Zagray has written the script for this year’s concerts. The choirs will also sing a number of well-known carols and the audience will be invited to sing with the choirs on some pieces. “In all, about 225 people – singers, instrumentalists, and narrators – come together to present this concert,” said Snyder. “It’s become an annual Coshocton Christmas tradition. This year, it’s hard to believe it, but we are celebrating our 40th anniversary.” All three choirs were founded and are conducted by Charles R. Snyder, who is highly respected throughout the state. He is also the conductor of the 200-voice All-Ohio Youth Choir that performs each year at the Ohio State Fair. The Coshocton Community Choir is now is it 40th season, and has commissioned several arrangements from well-known composers. Tickets for ‘Rise and Follow’ Festival Concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door. The concert is at Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium located at 1205 Cambridge Road in Coshocton. There are two concert times on Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Presale tickets are also available from these outlets: Liberty House in Roscoe Village; Good News Bookstore, Buehlers, and Marilyn’s Natural Foods in Coshocton; Home Loan Savings Bank in West Lafayette and Baker’s Foods in Newcomerstown. For more information, contact the Coshocton Community Choir at (740) 623-0554.

In 1921, a new Ohio law forces an Amish community to drastically change its way of life – or have their children taken from them. To protect his family, his friends, and their beliefs, one man urges the community to seek religious sanctuary in Mexico. But when the journey doesn’t go as planned, three sisters wonder if what lies ahead is worse than what they left behind. With their lives – and hearts – already on the line, will Paradise Valley live up to its name?

New Life Ministries Community Outreach Dinners and Community Food Pantry The New Life Ministries free Community Outreach Dinners are served on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. This is the eighth year for the dinners. “On Christmas Day the dinner will be served from Noon through 2:30 p.m.” said Pastor Mark Granger of New Life Ministries. “We can also deliver the meals if necessary beginning around 10:30 a.m. Christmas Day. We just ask that people needing meals delivered call the church and let us know how many Christmas meals they will need. They need to call the church beginning the week of Dec. 20 at (740) 622-2181.” For the Christmas dinner, they plan to serve ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, succotash, noodles, dinner rolls and pie. Granger says they can always use volunteers to help with set up, clean up, meal delivery, and serving the meal at the church on Christmas Day. They could still use donations of hams and other food items for the upcoming Christmas dinner. Granger says they typically have around 120 volunteers who assist on Thanksgiving day, and about half that many on Christmas day. “If you would like to help us out by cooking a ham for us that has been donated, we will give you as many as you want to cook and the pan to cook it in,” said Granger. “We also need approximately 60-70 pies for that day. Financial gifts are also much appreciated to help us purchase other needed items such as paper products, aluminum foil, coffee, lemon-aid, bottled water, gallon zip-lock bags, cans of broth, brown sugar, pineapple juice and stick butter. We also accept donations of these items.” The food pantry was started at the church in 2003. To receive food from the food pantry, interested parties can sign up in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 - 11 a.m. at the church. “It costs us around $40,000 annually to run the

food pantry,” said Granger. “We usually peak out in terms of numbers around this time of year to serving around 700 people each month through the food pantry. Many of these individuals are those who may have lost good jobs and are now working two or three part-time jobs and still don’t have enough to get by.” The food pantry is always in need of financial contributions as well as food donations. Any deer hunters who want to donate their deer can also contact the church. They can also use volunteers each month for the food pantry. “We have a very giving community,” said Granger. “People sometimes ask me what happens if we received too many food items. These items are saved and used later, or shared with the other food pantries in the area. We have been very credible with the food and dollars that have been donated to us for this ministry.” Donations can be dropped off at the double glass doors at the New Life Ministries Church at 727 S. 7th St. Call first to make sure someone is there at (740) 622-2181.

Agents Realty and Auction Service Toys for Kids Project This is the 13th year for the Agents Realty and Auction Service Toys for Kids project which supplies holiday toys to Coshocton County kids in need. “We donate proceeds from the Christmas auction that we have the Friday after Thanksgiving and the upcoming auction on Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m.,” said Sheri Fortune from Agents Realty. “We buy toys from the special toy auctions and patrons also buy toys from the auction and contribute funds toward the cause.” Fortune coordinates with local agencies such as Hopewell School and Job and Family Services to find the children who need the toys. They try to give at least five gifts per child, typically helping 75 to 100 children. Students from the juvenile court diversion program help them wrap the gifts. If you want to help in some way, you can attend the Dec. 10 toy auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the auction house located at 23024 County Road 621. You can also drop off new toys or monetary donations at the office. “I’ve already had patrons hand me money toward the project,” said Fortune. “Many of them support this cause every year. We also encourage other service groups and organizations to attend the auction to purchase the new toys they may need for their causes. It’s a win-win. They get the toys they need at a good price and we raise the funds we need to purchase the toys for the kids we serve.” “Paul Cochran is the dealer who brings the toys each year in to sell at the auctions,” said Fortune. “We are very thankful to everyone who comes to the auctions and supports the project. It’s the community that makes this happen by contributing funds and buying items.” For more information, contact Agents Realty and Auction Service at (740) 622-0700.
