WARSAW CANDLELIGHTING Festive Christmas music filled the village square in Warsaw thanks to the fifth and sixth grade honors choir from Warsaw Elementary School. The students are a traditional part of Warsaw’s candlelighting ceremony, which was held on Nov. 29. The Warsaw Business Association, the Warsaw Lions Club, the River View Ministerial Association, the Walhonding Valley Fire Department, EMS and the sheriff’s department work together to make the annual event happen. This year’s honorary candlelighter was Ronnie Lawrence and the speaker was Rev. Ron Davis. “We need to remember that the real reason for the season is to celebrate a light coming into this world named Jesus,” Davis said. He reminded attendees that they represent the light of Jesus and should let it shine brightly, not just at Christmas, but all year long. Lawrence helped get the candles, donated by Canal Cargo, lit while “Silent Night” was sung and then children were invited to visit with Santa Claus. Get in the spirit at West Lafayette’s Christmas in the Village WEST LAFAYETTE – Christmas in the Village in West Lafayette has become an annual holiday tradition for many local residents. The whole village is decked out for the holiday season by village employees and volunteers who help transform West Lafayette into Christmas town each year for the holidays. Burt Park is also decorated in its holiday finery.

This year, the festivities will be Saturday, Dec. 5 beginning with the West Lafayette Lions Breakfast buffet from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Children under the age of two can eat for free.

The menu will include pancakes, French toast, sausage, scrambled eggs, orange juice, and coffee.

After breakfast, make sure to stop by the craft show at the Village Baptist Church located at 21537 SR 751 beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting most of the day.

The West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce,

who sponsors the event each year, recently teamed up with Club Aries and combined the two craft shows together for one incredible show that will feature approximately 50 vendors.

Jessie Tubbs, Chuck Weaver, and Carol Wears have been hard at work making this year’s craft show a success.

The West Lafayette Library will also be getting in on some of the holiday fun during their Holiday Open House, which is from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Relax with a cup of hot cocoa, cookies, a craft, music, and a door prize. This event is sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

The main event each year is the Christmas parade featuring none other than Santa Claus.

Parade line-up is from noon to 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot at the Middle School and begins at 1 p.m. The parade will travel down Oak Street to Russell Avenue up to Plainfield Road, then down to Main Street and SR 751. The parade will disperse at the Baptist Church on SR 751 where Santa will then spend some time at the church to

COSHOCTON - Gifts of Love is the theme of the Coshocton Community Choir’s Festival Christmas Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. The concert is under the direction of Charles R. Snyder and features the 100-voice adult choir (now in its 45th season); singers in grades four through eight in the Coshocton Singers (now in its 29th season); high school singers in the Coshocton Youth Chorale (in its 14th season); the Roscoe Brass Quintet; pianist Dickie Barrick; and other area musicians. Interspersed with the music is narration written by Rev. Richard Hoover.

“In a season that’s become so focused on material gifts, I think we all need to be reminded of the gifts of love that surround us each day – gifts that are especially obvious at Christmas,” said Snyder. “Since our first festival concert in 1987, we’ve tried to look at Christmas through a different lens each year. A line from one of our songs in our choir’s library, ‘Come to the Manger’ shares the words ‘bring gifts of love, of joy, and brotherhood,’ which gave me the idea for this year’s concert theme: Gifts of Love.”

Snyder says that when putting together a concert program it’s always a joy to include compositions and arrangements by some of his teachers and colleagues from over the years.

“This year’s concert includes works by teachers/mentors Paul Christiansen, Donald Neuen and Harry Simeone, and by friends/ colleagues John Ness Beck and Hal Hopson,”

Public agencies tour Conesville Elementary School

This is the only way school officials can make sure their water has the right pH level.

Principal Joel Moore and River View Local School District Superintendent Dalton Summers took representatives of community agencies on a tour of the school Nov. 24 to show them some of the building’s quirks and hazards.

Moore likes to compare the building to an old tractor his family had.

“You knew how to make it run, but you couldn’t let anyone else borrow it because they wouldn’t know how to keep it from running out of gas or the battery going dead,” he said.

This is just the first of several tours the district is planning to show the public why they need to pass a bond issue next year to build a new elementary school. The Ohio School Facilities Commission recently informed the district that its plan to combine its four elementary schools into one new building connected to the current junior high and renovate it and the high school was accepted.

“I’ve heard over and over again from people how well kept our buildings are and it’s against my nature to show people what’s wrong or not up to standard, but it’s time to show people the reality of these (elementary school) buildings,” Summers said.

Moore, who is in his 10th year at the school, started the tour by showing attendees pictures hanging in the hallway of classes that went to Conesville in the 1930s-1950s and some more current ones.

“I’m proud of all these folks,” he said. “I’ve met a lot of them and heard their stories. I’m proud of the younger groups too, but not proud of the fact that they were in the same building as their great-grandparents.”

The original part of Conesville Elementary was built in 1917 and additions were made in 1935 and 1955. It was not built to have Internet cables running through it as Moore pointed out to the tour group once they were outside.

“All around the building we have cables running outside and to windows,” he said. “You can’t put cables through these thick walls.”

Moore also noted that the 345 students have to wait outside in all kinds of weather before school starts and there also are two modules that date back to the 1980s that the students use for a computer lab, science lab and for music class.

“We have no words to express how much we appreciate the community’s donations to the auction,” Tom said. “With everything that’s going on this year we’ve found that people are giving even more and that has floored us. Papa John’s Pizza normally gives us two or three pizzas and this year they are giving us eight. We appreciate everyone and the huge turnout we get. I think the auction gets more popular every year.”

Tom is excited about many of the items up for bid including fire rings from McWane Ductile and some of the gift baskets.

“What we try to do with things like the Kalahari Resort passes is make a travel package out of them,” Tom said. “We try to make sure you can have some gift cards for dinner or gas and can stay all night. We also have a nice package with dinner from John (at the Warehouse Coshocton Steak n Stein), a stay Tire and at Hillside Cabins and Retreading a nice bottle of wine.

The auction also features a 50/50 drawing, silent auction, cake auction, saddle raffle and door prizes.

“Our cake auction is a little different,” Tom said. “You don’t just get the cake; you also get what is under it in the envelope. They could have gift certificates from Bob Evans, Hardee’s, McDonald’s or a variety of other places under them.”

Auction items also don’t have to go home with you. They can be donated to worthy causes.

“The big thing I like about the auction is that it’s not just for Higher Hopes,” Tom said. “We also help (River View’s) Country Christmas.”

During the auction there is a big sleigh set up in the front of the room and if people buy items that come in multiples they can have the extra put in the sleigh or even buy something just to donate. Toys in the sleigh get donated to schools who take part in Country Christmas and any horse items are used at Higher Hopes.

“Country Christmas is for kids with special needs and we try to pick a different school each year (that attends) for them to take the toys back,” Tom said. “There are no strings attached.

WARSAW – Higher Hopes upcoming fundraiser is more than just an auction.

“I always tell people to come for the auction and stay for the fun,” said Tom Roahrig, who runs Higher Hopes with his wife Peggy. “There is something for everyone.”

The Higher Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center 15th Annual Auction will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, at River View High School. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the auction begins at 5 p.m. It is sponsored by River View FFA and auctioneers will be Wayne Yoder, Andrew Yoder Jr. and Mel-Dave.

“This is our biggest fundraiser,” Tom said.

“It keeps Higher Hopes going. It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun. We come home dead tired, but we know at the end of the night everybody was happy.”

“They told us to take it back up to the barn and use it for the kids,” Tom said. “This is more than an auction. It’s a time for people to get together and realize that there is more to life than just us.”

COSHOCTON - Jeff Wherley from the Coshocton County Recycling & Litter Prevention office is working hard to help businesses find a new place to recycle their paper products now that WestRock has closed.

“I am working with some different business and trying to find a possibility,” he said. “We have to find a business to do this because of the amount of products WestRock got. We can’t step in and do it because we would be overwhelmed.”

The majority of calls Wherley has received in regard to where to take recycling now have come from businesses like auto repair places, home repair businesses and garage door replacement people that get a lot of big boxes.

“We are trying to find a way to accommodate them,” Wherley said. “Residents in the city have their curb side program that they can use and those outside of the city have nine locations where we have recycling trailers.”

COSHOCTON – The first of three Roscoe Village Candlelightings will be Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Stage in Roscoe Village.

The Dec. 5 honorary candlelighter will be Santa Claus and the story reader will be Maddie Meiser.

The theme is “A Child’s Christmas”.

Guests visiting Roscoe Village for the Christmas Candlelightings on Dec. 5, 12 and 19, will have the opportunity to experience a truly old-fashioned Christmas. At candlelightings each year, visitors surround the stage in the center of the village to listen to the singing of carols, hear a Christmas story and witness the lighting of the 35-foot tree. They may also participate in the lighting of their candle. The Honorary Candlelighter lights his or her candle from the main candle on stage then passes the flame through the crowd as each guest joins in the singing of Silent Night until everyone’s candle is glowing. The candlelighting ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. Parking is also free.

Roscoe Village will offer a guided Christmas tour during each Candlelighting. Christmas cards, toys, treats, visions of sugarplums and letter to Santa learn from costumed interpreters how these holiday traditions were practiced in the 1800s. The tour will be available at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Following the Christmas Candlelighting Ceremony is a special candlelit tour at 7 p.m. Reservations for the evening tour must be made in advance by calling the Roscoe Village Visitor Center at 740-622-7644 ext. 12.

The Christmas tour will also be offered the first three Sundays in December at 1 p.m. Cost for the Christmas tour at any of the times listed is $9.95 for adults and $4.95 for students. Many have made this wonderful event a holiday tradition.

DECEMBER 4TH, 1955 Operation Toys, a toy rehabilitation program authorized by Santa Claus, was in progress at the Main Street band Walnut Street fire stations.

The firemen were busy repairing and painting toys which were distributed to needy children a few days before Christmas. Smaller toys were reconditioned at the Main Street station and the larger ones at the Walnut Street station.

Oneita Adams, county welfare director, was in charge of distributing the toys from Walnut Street station. Toys being rejuvenated at the fire stations included bicycles, wagons, sleds, scooters, baby buggies, dolls and doll beds, games, etc. New toys were also accepted at the Walnut Street station. The toys were on display for public inspection at the annual Yule party at the Walnut Street fire station.

DECEMBER 4TH, 1965 Lines formed early Friday night at River View High School as it opened the largest gymnasium in Coshocton County. Those who came early soon filled over 2,000 seats and saw the thrilling game in the well-lit gym. It was a tight contest all the way with the Redskins bringing home a 49-47 victory over the Bears. The crowd had to be the largest to see a basketball game in Coshocton County. Estimates ranged up to 3,000. School officials say there were slightly more than 2,000 permanent seats in the gym. Quite a few fans were seated in the aisles and chairs at the end of the floor, but at least 300 stood for the game. The game itself was a typical early season affair with both teams showing flashes of their potential.

DECEMBER 6TH, 1975 Henry Schriver, lecturer, farmer and humorist, was the guest speaker at the Ridgewood Corn Club Banquet Tuesday evening at Bakersville United Presbyterian Church. Described by the Amarillo Daily News as “America’s finest Farmer Philosopher”, Schriver was a nationallyrecognized goodwill ambassador of co-ops.

His education started in a one-room country school and continued to a bachelor degree of Science from the College of Agriculture at Ohio State University where he majored in pomology. Schriver’a citizenship efforts range from service on his local church and education boards, 25 years as leader of the 4-H dairy club, to service on the Ohio General Assembly. This was the 12th year the Ridgewood 100 Bushel Corn Club Banquet had been held.

DECEMBER 6TH, 1985 Christmas Love was a program established in 1980 to help needy residents in the county.

Originally it provided toys, but since then, it strictly gave food to those in need. Last year, the program helped about 36 families and provided them with about a week’s supply of groceries bought from local stores. Organizers check the names of families it intends to help against a list kept by the Salvation Army of those helped by other programs. The goal for the program that year was $1,000. In addition canisters were set up at local businesses for donations. All money collected went into the Christmas Love program.

COSHOCTON - Richard Downing Airport Administrator Bethel Toler has announced plans and dates for the 2016 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show, promising two days of fun and adventure for the community.

The dates for the 2016 event are Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18 with a special VIP night on Friday, Sept. 16. Toler also said that the 2013 Air Show – which was the most recent air show held in the community – was a success thanks

to the financial generosity of several corporations, businesses, individual sponsors and numerous volunteers.

Toler said, “We are planning to host two full days hoping that this will give everyone an opportunity to watch some of the world’s greatest aerobatic pilots and parachuters in action.

“Your commitment to the success of this event is vital to the growth of Richard Downing Airport and the continued economic growth of our community.

Over the past five years, since the expansion of our runway, our jet traffic has increased enormously. As a result, we strive to build a corporate hangar, install de-icing equipment and other necessities to keep these business jets coming into out airport/community as Coshocton continues to grow economically.

Because of the cost of hosting an Air Show of this magnitude, we only plan one every two to three years, as not to burden our sponsors every

The school also has experienced problems with its roof and water and sewer systems.

“The sewer backs up all the time and we have to snake it out,” Moore said. “The pipes are 80 years old.”

Moore made sure to point out cracks in the building, where water leaks around windows, the lack of sidewalks around the building, the parking lot that has to be double parked, the outside door that doesn’t always latch and the lack of handicap accessibility.

“There are a lot of steps in this building,” Moore said. “If we have an assembly and a grandparent wants to come watch (but is

handicapped) we have to take them in through the custodian’s entrance and then we can only get them to the bottom floor.”

Another one of the many problems Moore pointed out is that the building wasn’t built for little children.

“The newer part of the building is where are youngest kids are,” he said. “They are trying to do personalized learning in a building not built for it. They do an excellent job though despite the rooms they are in. It’s like magic in here, unless it starts raining and then they have to move everything away from the windows.”

Learning in the school though when it’s hot is a whole different story.

“On the third floor it can get up to 104 and 106 degrees and that’s in September,” Summers said.

The school, however, does have one bonus that the others in the district don’t.

“It’s the only building that has cell phone service,” Summers said.

Moore said mass text messaging is part of the staff’s emergency plan.

“We were on lock down once this year when there was an incident outside off school grounds that made us nervous,” he said. “Our teachers were under pressure, but our system worked. The teachers were texting each other and telling them where kids were and that they were safe.”

When the tour ended Summers reminded attendees that this was only one of four buildings that are all in very similar condition.

“We invited you here because you are in contact with people,” he said. “Whether you agree or disagree with us you have now seen firsthand the condition of one of our buildings,” he said.

Summers explained that there will be public tours of the schools planned for the near future to help the district get the word out about its need to pass a bond issue next year.

“Industries that may want to come to town are going to want to look at the schools,” he said. “They are going to see the new school in Coshocton and the fairly new one for Ridgewood and then ours. Our state test for achievement scores came back pretty good but people don’t always care about scores. Our buildings aren’t going to attract people to the community.”

BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – This year, kick off your Christmas season a little bit differently with a Christmas-themed 5k night race at Lake Park on Dec. 19. The Jingle Bell Jangle 5k is part of a new venture by locals Dustin Haywood and Kelly Treat as they strive to host more events, mostly races, in Coshocton in the future.

“This has been an idea I have had for the last couple of years,” said Haywood. “A lot of bigger cities have more options when it comes to 5ks, so I just figured, why not have something like this in Coshocton?”

The course at Lake Park will be a brand new course that has never been used by runners. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and runners are asked to meet at the Lake Park Canal Boat parking lot. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. and all participants will be provided with jingle bells to wear as they run, if they choose. A giveaway item will also be given to all preregistrants.

What makes this 5k unique is that the course will feature a widevariety of Christmas decorations lighting the course, making it the perfect way for area runners to get into the holiday spirit. COSHOCTON – The parents of her preschoolers just about moved Connie McCullough to tears during their Nov. 25 Thanksgiving luncheon at Head Start’s location on County Road 16.

“Thank you all for coming,” said McCullough, who teaches preschool. “In 24 years of teaching this is the first time every child has had a family member come. You have no idea what this means to your child. You guys are amazing.”

Head Start doesn’t just prepare children for kindergarten. The staff genuinely cares about the students and their families and partner with them to help them set and achieve goals.

Arika Stephen is glad her 5-year-old son Trennon Martin attends Head Start.

“I like her (Connie),” Stephen said. “You can tell she cares.”

McCullough teaches the class along with Donna Covic and they have a volunteer from the foster grandparent program that assists them.

“Trennon has been to other schools and they weren’t as interactive with him like this,” Stephen said.

“I like this,” Taran said. “I remember being in elementary school and thinking it was cool to have my parents at school.”

The meal at the luncheon was served family style, which is very important to Head Start.

“This is how we serve our lunches and our snacks here,” McCullough said. “We sit like a family because we are a school family. The conversation is unbelievable. The kids will talk about their families, their puppies or kittens, about going fishing with dad or baking cupcakes with mom.

The importance of spending time with family wasn’t the only lesson worked into the luncheon.

The students created decorations and placemats for the tables and practiced literacy by learning a finger play that was performed for their parents while wearing hats they made. The 18 3-5-yearolds also drew pictures of what they are thankful for and dictated to their teachers what the pictures stood for.

Trennon was thankful for his Mom, Dad, cat and kitten. Four-year-old Ellayna Smith was thankful for her puppies, but also her mom.

“I love her,” Smith said.

Her mom, Sarah Green, really enjoyed the luncheon.

“Not very many schools have this type of interaction with the kids, teachers and parents,” Green said.

Charissa Freeman and Justin Freeman also are appreciative of the school and all it has done for their 5-year-old son Braxton Darr.

“They are wonderful with the kids and Braxton has improved so much in the time he’s been here,” Charissa said.

City Council closer to finalizing law enforcement contract prioritizing the different layers of a safe routes to school project that address the need for things like sidewalks in certain areas.

“They should have a proposal for us in January and we believe there is some grant funding available,” he said.

Stenner also shared that leaf pickup is going well.

“We should be able to go back around after Dec. 5 and get anyone we missed or who didn’t have their leaves together in time,” he said.

Unfortunately at the meeting Stenner didn’t have any answers for how WestRock closing will impact the city’s utilities department.

“We haven’t come to a complete conclusion, but we are working on it,” he said.

Ordinances 53-15 and 54-15, connected to the creation of a property code inspector position, also were discussed.

“It’s clear that a lot of thought was put into what we want to do and I appreciate that,” said Council President Cliff Biggers.

Councilman Jim Baker objected to the need for this position when members of council have been voluntarily keeping their eyes open for violations and reporting them. Mercer, however, believes this position is necessary to take enforcement of property codes to a new level.

Both ordinance 53-15 and 54-15 were only given a first reading.

Council also heard from Rev. Elvis Bloom during the public input part of their meeting.

Bloom feels he is harassed by members of the community and isn’t able to go out and support the community like a pastor should. He also was concerned about how fast people travel down an alley near his home. Stenner assured him the problem is being addressed and additional speed limit signs will be put up.

The meeting ended with Councilman Tom Grier passing out information books on infrastructure renovation projects Our Town Coshocton has funding for. Our Town Coshocton would like to do a presentation at an upcoming council meeting and give council members the opportunity to ask questions about their proposals.

COSHOCTON – Coshocton City Council is one step closer to finalizing its contract with the sheriff’s office.

During the Nov. 23 meeting city council heard the first reading of ordinance 52-15, which authorizes the mayor or service director to enter into a contract with the Coshocton County Sheriff for law enforcement protection for the City of Coshocton.

“We have reached a tentative settlement that will increase the number of deputies over a three year period and allow us to upgrade and purchase some new vehicles,” said Mayor Steve Mercer.

At meeting time the contract was only in draft form, but Mercer said the council members would soon have an updated version of it in their e-mail to review.

Sheriff Tim Rogers was thankful for the progress on the contract.

“It will allow us to get additional deputies out there on the streets, which is what we pushed to the voters,” he said. “It will be good to be able to fulfill that.”

Rogers also said his department is continuing its war on drugs.

“We’ve done a lot of indictments recently and we have a lot more to go,” he said. “We are going to keep a close eye on that.”

Revision to PRC amendment made

BY BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON – Melinda Fehrman, director of Department of Job and Family Services, met with the commissioners on Wednesday, Nov. 25 to discuss revisions to the Prevention, Retention, and Contingency (PRC) plan amendment. Fehrman met with the commissioners at the end of October to discuss recommended changes to the department’s PRC Plan.

Fehrman recommended four areas of the plan that need adjustments. After sending those changes to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the state came back with a revision. The PRC program is not to be used as continued assistance, but rather a one-time short-term assistance to low-income families. The state required that the section in the revision stating funding may be used to supply other programs was removed. The commissioners approved the new revision.

COSHOCTON - Several area 4-H volunteers were honored at the 2015 Leaders Banquet held Tuesday evening, Nov. 24 at The Presbyterian Church. The event was sponsored by the Coshocton County Agricultural Society, Farm Credit Services, People’s Bank and the Coshocton County Farm Bureau.

The always delicious meal was prepared by the 4-H Endowment Committee and 4-H Advisory Committee chaired by Maureen Pritchard and was served by members of the Coshocton County Junior Fair Board & Junior Leaders. Bob Buxton gave the invocation and 2015 Junior Fair King and Queen Collin McCoy and Jade Poorman gave remarks on how the 4-H program has prepared them for their future.

First year 4-H advisors were honored with

those in attendance given a certificate. Other 4-H advisors were recognized for each five years of service. Twenty year advisor was Stacey Seitz; 25 year advisors are Sheila Graves, Paula Hathaway, Ann Morgan and Trent Parkhill. Thirty year advisors are Doris Parkhill and Cheryl Smailes.

Thirty-five year advisor is Gordon Arney and one 50 year advisor was recognized – Bob Buxton.

An Ambassador Award was presented to Vickie Davis by Jean Haumschild. Among other experiences, Davis has been an advisor with the Active Achievers 4-H Club for 23 years, a member of the 4-H Camp adult staff, helped with goat committee, the 4-H advisory committee and others. Haumschild said, “The word creativity doesn’t even come close to describing her speech writing abilities. She helps young 4-H

members come up with speeches that are full of information, knowledge and humor to make a very informative and fun speech. She also brings out the best in all of her 4-H speakers that she works with. She has helped shape so many young people in our community that have gone on to become amazing young adults.”

An Ambassador Award was presented to Bambi Zinkon by Susan McCurdy. Among other experiences, Zinkon has been an advisor with the Odds ‘n Ends 4-H Club for eight years and helps take the photos for the buyers at the fair. They joined approximately 500 other tourism industry members to discuss tourism trends and opportunities, as well as to hear from national experts. The conference, sponsored by the Ohio Travel Association, was held Nov. 16-18.

During the conference, several attendees were honored with RUBY Awards and the Coshocton Visitors Bureau received a Citation of Excellence award in the Marketing Campaign category for their Annin Flagmakers Showroom and Visitor Welcome Center. The Ohio Travel Association’s RUBY Awards recognize excellence in Ohio’s travel and tourism industry for efforts in advertising, marketing and public relations. In this year’s competition, the Recognizing Uncommon Brilliance (RUBY) Awards had over 190 entries in 16 categories.

The awards were sponsored by Ohio Magazine.

Also at the conference, TourismOhio, the state’s tourism marketing office, released the new brand for the state which connects the emotional components of travel with a tagline motto: find it here. County 4-H. Heather has been our official photographer for the junior fair livestock auction sale and this is quite a tremendous undertaking.

She has served on the OSU Extension Advisory Committee, served as president for three years and was very active in being on our extension levy committee both times. Ryan, as all of you know, serves as an auctioneer with the beef program and not only that he volunteers as the auctioneer on the auction committee. They both have helped with 4-H skillathons and when it comes to anything with the 4-H program, they don’t know how to say no.”

A Friend of 4-H Award was presented to Janet Smith by Jan Luce. Words that were used

by Luce to describe Janet were: hard working, dependable, dedicated, caring, perfectionist, faithful, considerate, reliable. “All are equally applicable,” Luce said. “Janet has had a noticeable impact on the 4-H program and has given strength, knowledge and dedication for 14 years to our county 4-H members, parents, advisors, extension staff and Junior Fair Board.”

Shelter helps save dog lost from Pennsylvania

Kutter didn’t have a collar on and the microchip the family said he had couldn’t be read by the shelter’s scanner.

“Our scanner is old and only reads nine numbers,” Selders said.

The family, however, had papers for Kutter and showed Selders how he responded to their commands in German.

“They took him to their local vet and it turns out his microchip had fallen all the way down to his paw,” Selders said.

She believes Kutter’s story has several lessons in it.

“Microchips are very important and so are tags,” she said. “Also if you move or change your phone number, make sure to update your information (for your dogs at the county auditor’s office or the shelter). We also learned to scan the whole dog’s body when looking for a chip.”

Thankfully, the shelter now has the funds to get a universal scanner.

“We are so happy to have saved a life just through shares (on Facebook),” Selders said.

Debra said Kutter is very happy to be home.

“The kids all missed him terribly and so did we,” she said. “Kutter is their ‘fur brother’ and my ‘fur child,’ We are all thrilled to finally have him home and want to use his story to continue to bring hope to families with lost ‘fur babies’ as well as get awareness out there about the issues with the scanners. We are just over the moon we found him!”

REUNION Kutter, who somehow found his way from Pennsylvania to Coshocton County, was reunited with his family at the Coshocton County Animal Shelter thanks to the power of Facebook shares. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON – Rachael Selders was a little skeptical when a family from Pennsylvania called and said their dog was at the Coshocton County Animal Shelter.

“It just seemed so farfetched,” Selders said.

However, it turned out the bloodhound named Kutter that was picked up by the dog warden was indeed theirs.

“He (Kutter) went missing from a private family camp in Parker, Pa., east of our home in Hermitage, Pa.,” said Debra Fair. “We were ecstatic (to find him). We were all devastated when Kutter went missing, it was four months to the day we got him home, but we searched, never stopping.. even with him being MIA the last two months... never ever gave up, nor would have.”

Kutter, who belongs to Debra, her husband Joseph and their kids, Dade, age 10, Wren age 7, Ryvr age 4, and Crüe age 2 ½, traveled nearly 133 miles and found himself in the County Road 23 area of Coshocton County.

“The dog warden picked him up on Nov. 14 and the person who called said he was nice, but just scared her kitty cats,” Selders said. “When we got him here he was vicious and hollering and jumping. We weren’t going to be able to adopt him out because he was too aggressive.”

Life could have been very bleak for Kutter, but through the power of Facebook shares his owners were found. Selders posted a picture of the dog on a Saturday in hopes of finding his owners and by Tuesday his family in Pennsylvania had seen him on Facebook and came to get him that Wednesday.

“We started posting right after he went missing (fliers, FB, websites etc, anywhere and everywhere), then the come home Kutter page was born not long after,” Debra said. “He went missing on July 18 of this year and the many great people we call ‘Kutter’s followers’ are the ones who really got the word to us and helped just by sharing possibilities to his page if we hadn’t checked ourselves.”

Thanksgiving Day run well attended COSHOCTON – One hundred and eight-seven participants came out to Lake Park early on Thanksgiving Day morning to run, walk or jog away the calories that they might put on later in the day. Event organizers Kelly Treat and Dustin Haywood were enthusiastic about this year’s response. “It has blown up this year,” said Treat.

“We planned last year in about three weeks and had 62 participants.”

Haywood said, “I think there are a lot of people in town that maybe don’t live here but they’re visiting family and they are runners and they just wanted to come out and support a race.

They’re here, so why not.”

Treat said, “We also have a lot of local runners that don’t want to go out of town so they’re thankful that they have their own Turkey Trot to attend.”

“I’m going to hand select a wrestler from K-sixth, seventh – eighth and ninth - 12th grade,” Allen said. “I wrestled at Coshocton and coached there so I want to give back to them.”

This was his third time performing in his hometown.

“If it weren’t for the folks who were packing the bars here when I played, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to try Nashville,” Allen said. “I like to show my appreciation to them.”

The concert also had a different format than most of Allen’s performances.

“There are no lights and smoke,” Allen said.

“I wanted to show the fans what we’ve been working so hard on. I wanted this concert to be personal and the Triple Locks Theater is the perfect spot to do that.”
