Other audience favorites will include Paul Christiansen’s setting of “O Holy Night,” a lovely setting of “Away in a Manger” sung by the children’s choir, the familiar “Carol of the Bells,” two contemporary Christmas spirituals, and the calypso carol “Mary’s Little Boy Chile,” made famous by singer Harry Belafonte. Members of the audience will join the choirs and instrumentalists in singing “We Three Kings of Orient.” The concert features the 100-voice adult choir (now in its 43rd season), 42 singers in grades four through eight in the Coshocton Children’s Choir (now in its 27th season), 56 high school singers in the Coshocton Youth Chorale (in its 12th season), the Roscoe Brass Quintet, pianists Dickie Barrick and Mark Wagner, Deborah Jones on Oboe, and percussionist Jeff Myers. “Those who come to one of our concerts for the first time – especially those from a metropolitan area – often share their pleasant surprise when they see and hear 200 musicians from our area unite to offer their gifts of music,” Snyder said. “Many of our regular concert attendees tell us that their Christmas celebration begins with this concert. We invite you to share the joy of the season with us on Dec. 8.” Tickets for The Christmas Rose Festival Concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students. COSHOCTON — The Christmas Rose is the theme of the Coshocton Community Choir’s Festival Christmas Concert at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. More than 200 musicians from throughout central Ohio will weave together the Christmas Story at Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium. Musical selections during the 90-minute concert span the centuries as the adult choir, the Children’s Choir and the Youth Chorale, all under the direction of Charles R. Snyder, perform a mix of sacred and secular choral music. “Christmas songs and scripture abound with imagery of flowers blooming in the desert,” Snyder said. “Some songs see Jesus as the Christmas Rose; others speak of Mary as the flower that bore the Savior. As always, choosing a new theme each year allows us to see the Christmas story through a different lens. Once again, our artist friend Tom Kulewicz has beautifully captured that in the logo he’s designed for this concert.” This year’s concert narration has been written by The Rev. Richard K. Hoover, retired pastor of Roscoe United Methodist Church. “His love of music and his ability to capture and relate scriptural truth with poetic beauty make him a natural for this task,” Snyder said. “He also wrote the concert story for us in 2009. We are grateful that he agreed to tackle this task again.” Snyder says the songs suggested by The Christmas Rose theme include the time-honored “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming”; composer friend Garry Cornell’s “One Perfect Flower”; the seasonal favorite, “Gesu Bambino” by Pietro Yon; and Z. Randall Stroope’s hauntingly beautiful piece for women’s voices with piano

Journey to Christ’s birth at the Live Nativity By Beth Scott COSHOCTON – With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s hard to focus on the true meaning of the season. This Christmas, take a step back in time to the busy marketplace of Bethlehem, the tax collectors on the streets, the inn where Mary and Joseph were turned away, angels proclaiming the good news through song, shepherds in the fields watching their flocks, and finally, the stable where the Prince of Peace was born. All of this and more can be seen at the Coshocton Christian Tabernacle’s Live Nativity Dec. 6-8 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. “The marketplace scene is really neat,” said Jamie Williams, PR coordinator for the event. “It’s our biggest scene with people dressed in Biblical times and walking

around selling wares and buying things.” The Live Nativity doesn’t stop with the birth of Jesus. It continues throughout his life and death, ending with his resurrection. “We want to show the whole story so everyone gets the idea of why he came, why he was born, and why he died,” said Jackie Wagner, coordinator of the event since its inception 16 years ago. More than 100 church members participate in this event each year, the youngest being an infant and the oldest this year is 70 years old. Live animals, including three camels, meander through the different Biblical scenes. The event is drive-thru only and luminaries will light the way. At the end of the drive-thru, everyone will receive a CD of the Christmas story as told by the pastor of

the church. “It tells the Christmas story,” said Wagner. “And people like hearing what it’s really about. It’s a great family event.” The Live Nativity has always been wellreceived by the community and has become a tradition for a lot of Coshocton residents, and for the church as well. “I think it’s an awesome way to start out the Christmas season,” said Williams. “To take a pause and remember the reason for the season. He sipped on hot chocolate while listening to his sister sing in the choir. After the choir wrapped up its joyful tunes, Santa arrived to visit with all the children. Santa will make another appearance Saturday, Dec. 7, when the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce hosts its Christmas in the Village. The list of activities includes a pancake breakfast by the Lion’s Club from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the West Lafayette Methodist Church, the Club Aries Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ridgewood High School and the Santa Parade at 1 p.m. “The chamber started this many years ago and we just like to keep the tradition going and welcome Santa to the village,” said Christie Maurer, president of the chamber. Santa will make his appearance in the village at the end of the parade, which works its way down Main Street and to the band stand at Burt Park. Once there, Santa greets all the children and passes out candy to them. Line up for the parade is at 12:30 p.m. at Lafayette Point.

Warsaw started the fun off with its Village Christmas Candle Lighting Service Dec. 1, in the village square. The annual event is sponsored by the Warsaw Business Association with help from the River View Ministerial Association and the Warsaw Lions Club. Music for the festive event was provided by fifth and sixth grade choir students from Warsaw Elementary. They kept the crowd that had gathered around the gazebo entertained with

The 56th annual Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show provided laughs aplenty and a few surprises along the way. The theme was “Hooked on a Feeling”. For more than a year, guests at the show did not know who was going to be the interlocutor after long-time interlocutor Jim Bartlett announced his retirement from the position at last year’s show. Jesse Fischer stepped into the role and after stumbling and bumbling his way through a few announcements – was promptly replaced by – SURPRISE – Mr. Bartlett. The Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show is always full of great music, laughs and an opportunity for people to socialize. Larry Pepper provides an emotional talk at the end that always gives you pause. The goal is to have an activity at each location with refreshments and art. The event is free. “I want to get people into our places that maybe they have never been,” said Prindle. During 2014, Prindle will be featuring a different local artist each month at The Frame Shop. Her artwork will be featured January and February and she has artists lined up to showcase their works for the next few months afterward. “Each month, I want to do something to promote the business, the gallery, and the art in Coshocton,” said Prindle. In September, Prindle is planning a large outdoor event in commemoration of their 20th anniversary. In addition to the gallery, The Frame Shop is still selling art supplies in the back of the store. “It’s relaxing,” said Prindle about painting. “It’s peaceful. COSHOCTON — Julie Van Winkle, director of the 26th annual Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA), announced Nov. 25, that the 2014 tour, June 14-21, will feature a route in the northeastern quadrant of Ohio, which will include Coshocton. The expected 2,500 riders will start gathering for the tour on Saturday, June 14, at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Mansfield. They will begin cycling on Sunday, June 15, covering an average of 50 miles per day, and will overnight in Orrville on Sunday, Coshocton on Monday and Tuesday, Mount Vernon on Wednesday and Thursday, Bucyrus on Friday, and will return to Mansfield on Saturday, June 21. Some of the many attractions featured on this tour include the Richland Carrousel Park, Roscoe Village, Monticello III Canal Boat, Mohawk Dam, Kokosing Gap Trail, Historic Woodward Opera House, Lincoln Highway, Secrest Arboretum, Charles Mill Lake, Orrville Railroad Museum, Holmes County Trail, Millersburg, Underground Railroad sites, Bucyrus’ own 50’s Memories at Carl’s Gas Station, and other historic sites, covered bridges, and nature areas. “We are so excited to welcome the GOBA riders to Coshocton once again for a two-night stay,” said Jan Myers, Director of the Coshocton

Most of them will be staying at the Lake Park Complex and spending time visiting our attractions, shops and restaurants. It is always so fun to see all the bicycles everywhere throughout the community when they are here.” The fun-filled week will include the traditional bicycle parade and the gala opening ceremonies in Mansfield; family-oriented entertainment each night; two layover days offering bicycle loops of 50- or 100-miles to Zoar Village, Sugarcreek, or Utica; swimming; optional excursions to Zoar Village, Sugarcreek, Rolling Ridge Ranch, Dawes Arboretum, or a cruise on Buckeye Lake; and the ever-popular GOBA Song Contest. “The 2014 GOBA tour features the theme “Take a Ride on the Wild Side!” and offers a ride that promises to be a little bit hilly, a little bit wild, a lot family-friendly, and 100 percent joy,” Van Winkle stated. Held annually in June, GOBA features bicycle touring at a leisurely pace, for approximately 50 miles per day for one week. This will be the 26 year for GOBA. The tour is owned and organized by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, a nonprofit organization, for the benefit of bicycle-related projects in Ohio. In 2013, 2,300 people from 40 states; the District of Columbia; Japan; Switzerland; and Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia, Canada, took part in the tour. Included in this number were many families: nearly 20 percent of the participants are children traveling with their parents, making GOBA the largest family-oriented bicycle tour in the world. Over the past 25 years GOBA has been

instrumental in generating nearly $10 million in tourism revenues in the towns along the route, as well as in providing access to Ohio’s rural treasures to people from all over the country. “Some of the best experiences on GOBA come from the interaction with the people and places that we find in the great towns of Ohio,” Van Winkle stated. The first one included 72 dolls, which were all sold within two days. Kroger’s wasn’t as lucky to get the dolls. They sent in an order for them, but never received them. The dolls retailed for $20 and actually caused fights amongst customers.

WINGATE N.C. – The Wingate University women’s cross country team, which includes Coshocton native Brianna Stevens, finished the year 26th (out of 32 teams) in the 2013 NCAA Division II national championship meet Saturday, Nov. 23. Wingate also won the NCAA Division II Southeast Region women’s cross country team race Nov. 9, to take the school’s first-ever XC region team title and they also claimed the South Atlantic Conference title. Stevens endured two major injuries and countless hours of rehabilitation to get ready for these opportunities. At the end of her sophomore cross country season in 2011, Stevens felt pain in her foot during the SAC championship meet. She finished the SAC event and raced at regionals. She saw several doctors. “I wanted to finish the season for the team,” “I saw the team doctor…I saw a doctor in Stevens said. “The pain was excruciating…and I Ohio…I saw a doctor in Charlotte,” Stevens ran a terrible race (at regionals).” said. “They (the doctors) were trying to figure out what was wrong…at the time, no one knew. BY JOSIE SELLERS COSHOCTON – Roscoe Village Sweets and Treats features more than 1,200 different types of candy and more is constantly being added. “We have a list of what people want and will try to get it so we can keep people close to home and shopping locally,” said Teri Misener, who runs the shop with her brother Bob McKenna. “If you request it we will go try to find it.” The store is located at 435 N. Whitewoman St. and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Local people have been great in supporting us and our out of town guests are having a ball,” Misener said. She said the store was her brother’s idea and they did a lot of research on candy stores in New York, Chicago and Ohio, before opening theirs in October. “Ours is a little different from other candy stores and will be a great asset to Roscoe Village,” Misener said. “It’s a place to have fun.” Roscoe Village Sweets and Treats features candy from famous companies like Hammond’s in Colorado, Nancy’s in Virginia, and Melville’s in Massachusetts. “Some of these companies are 50-75 years old and still doing things the old fashioned way,” Misener said. The store also has unique treats like chocolate covered boulders, candied aunts and chocolate covered bacon. There also are lollipops that come in flavors like dill pickle and margarita. Diabetics will find plenty of treats in the store and candy makers can find everything they need to make their own delicious goodies. COSHOCTON - A local 4-H youth, Elisha Hamric, was selected to attend the National 4-H Congress which was from Nov. 29 through Dec. 3, in Atlanta, Georgia. Delegates to this national event were selected earlier in the year based on their documented 4-H and community achievements. The purpose of the National 4-H Congress is to reward each delegates’ achievements, provide new and educational and cultural experiences, provide a forum for interaction and exchange of ideas among youth and adults, and encourage leaders of business, government, education, and public affairs to share in the development of the youth. This year, the theme of the congress is “Passport to Excellence”. More than 1,000 youth were expected to attend the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. Only 28 youth in Ohio were selected to attend out of more than 500 interested applicants.

Coshocton wrestlers primed for success BY JIM BARSTOW

COSHOCTON - One word that is being thrown around the wrestling mat at Coshocton High School will pretty well describe the outlook that head coach Tim Ward has for the 2013-14 season: Excitement. The Redskins return 16 lettermen, led by junior Dom Johns and four senior leaders, which gives Ward reason to believe that the season will be successful. Depth is a definite asset when it comes to giving the Red and Black a competitive edge. “With 16 returning wrestlers, it will make our team better,” Ward said. “We will be able to fill every weight class this year. It will be tough to make the varsity team. We are young and working hard twice a day to get better.” Johns fought his way to a 44-15 overall record last year and capped off the season by finishing sixth at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament where he compiled a 3-3 mark. His overall win total was a school record for sophomores and embodies the reason for the excitement surrounding the team. “He is a lot of fun to watch, but he gives me a heart attack every time he wrestles,” Ward said. Johns will bump up to the 182-pound weight class this year. Among the seniors, Colton Jordan went 23-20 on his way to the districts as a 113-pound sophomore and missed his junior year due to medical reasons. He will battle at either 138 or 145 this year. Having come on strong at the end of the season, Micha Demoss fell just one win shy of advancing to the districts while going 18-24 and Tyler Gentile had a 4-15 record and will compete for a spot in the middle weight classes. At 220 pounds, Josh Ackley returns after a 23-15 mark and an appearance in the district tournament. “Josh is a wrestler whose time will come as long as he works hard in the wrestling room,” Ward said. Paul Kinard also represents the junior class and will be seeking his third varsity letter. He battled to a 9-7 mark a year ago and has an inside track on the 160-pound slot. Included in a deep and talented sophomore class are district qualifiers Tanner Ward, Kyle Bergeron and Brennen Alverson. Ward went 28-20 as a 106-pound freshman and the son of the head coach. Bergeron was 20-23 and Alverson was 24-26. Coach Ward also believes Jeremy Bresciani (170), Jacoby Spang, Christian Redman (182), Camron Redman (285), Tanner Shaw and Tanner Howell (220/285) will make an impact as they return nearly 50 wins amongst them while Caleb Meek, Trystn VanAtta have shown improvement. Also returning to the mat is Jake Fortney, who played basketball the past two seasons. The freshman group is large and only lost one dual meet in the past two years. Leading the list is Sam Fortune, who qualified for the junior

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton High School swim team will again hope to make an impact as it begins the 2013-14 high school season. Under new head coach Julie Shaw, the Redskins return 12 letter winners between the boys and girls teams while welcoming 17 new faces to the program. “We have a lot of new swimmers this year but we feel they have a lot of potential,” said Shaw.”They are hard workers and are very willing to learn.” For the girls’ team, returning letter winners include seniors Kaitlyn Salmans, Casey Fortney and Peyton Bair while Jacqueline Roman and Georgia Brown represent the junior class. Jenny Simpson is the lone sophomore who returns after earning a letter last season. Newcomers to the team are seniors Quantesha Carlton and Maisie Mitchell; juniors Ula Chodun, Marina Fernandes, Emily Hartley and Keely Misener; sophomore Sydney Ringenberg; and freshmen Severi Vouiri, Reanna Ackley, Cassidy Cantrell, Michaela Guinther, Taylor Holderbaum and Amia Woods. Ringenberg may be new to the program but not to swimming. She has swam competitively for the Rising Tide Aquatic Club for more than seven years. “She should be a great addition to the team and girls’ relays,” Shaw said. On the boys’ side, seniors Marc Smith, Alex Wheeler and Jacob Blank will provide leadership and experience while juniors are Brice Lillibridge and newcomer Brian Rogers. Rogers is new to the program after having transferred from Ridgewood, where he lettered as a freshman and sophomore as a 200 freestyler and in the 100 breaststroke. He also will bolster the Redskins’ relay teams. “As a team, their goal is to make it to the state championship meet in the relays,” Shaw said. Sophomore returnees are Cody McVay and Bryce Philabaum. New to the team are sophomores Talon Babcock and Seth Casey. “Our returning boys will definitely be the strength of the team and with the addition of Rogers, we should prove to be very strong,” Shaw said. The Redskins opened the season on Nov. 25 by hosting River View and Orrville and battled Liberty Union and Granville on Dec. 3. They should benefit from eight more meets in friendly waters as CHS hosts the Coshocton Invitational on Jan. 11 and the East Central Ohio League Championships on Jan. 17. Shaw is assisted by Carrie Weaver and Nat McColley.

WEST LAFAYETTE – Take a quick peek into the Ridgewood High School wrestling room and you will see one obvious difference from a year ago: It is a lot more crowded. Combined with the return of seven lettermen, the Generals have added nine incoming freshmen to bring the entire roster to 20 wrestlers, which will bode well as the season progresses. “The team is made up of a core of experienced upperclassmen and a big group of freshmen who have wrestled in our system all the way up through,” said Nate Carpenter, now in his third season as head coach. Back for the Generals are seniors and three year lettermen Garret Bethel and Cole Zeigler. Bethel will wrestle in the 160-pound weight class while Zeigler will man the 126 pound class. “One strength is our two senior leaders,” Carpenter said. “They were our only juniors on a team with no seniors last year so they have already spent one season being the leaders of the team. That experience should help them keep our young group together.” Also returning is another senior in Phillip Shannon (152) who brings with him two previous varsity letters. Juniors Thor Reed (152), Kelly Barthalow (285) and Zach Donley (182) are seeking their third letters while classmate Ben Hostetler (170) also earned his first letter last year. Other juniors include Nathan Schwartz (132) and Matt Deltorro (170) while sophomores are Chancey Johnston (285) and Cory Shaw (145). Freshmen are James Kedigh (195), Kyle Bethel (126), Colton Bethel (106), Kevin Bethel (138), Anthony Haarman (220), Kaden Edie (170), Javon Merrill (120), Kasey Bethel (145) and Adam Buckler (138). “A key for our success this year will be to keep working as the year progresses,” Carpenter said. “Our young guys are going to take some lumps early but if they keep their heads up and continue to work they could be dangerous by the end of the year.” Ridgewood opens the season on Friday, Dec. 6th at the Smithville Invitational. The first home match will be an Inter-Valley Conference Triangular with Sandy Valley and Newcomerstown.

We have a lot of big wrestlers so if someone gets hurt or sick, we won’t miss a beat. There is a lot of great competition for spots on the team.” “We are going to be in shape and if you take the match into the third period, anything can happen,” Coach Ward said. Among them is junior Lydia Els, who in the first meet of the season established a pair of new school records after coming off a stellar sophomore season. Primarily a distance freestyler, Els will be utilized in different events throughout the season, including the relays. “She is an elite swimmer and competent in all strokes and distances,” said King. Also returning are junior Shelby Mizer and sophomore Kristen Douglass who will excel in the sprints and sprint-relays. Sophomore Samantha Douglass well battle in the mid-distance, distance and relays while another sophomore, K.J. Smailes, will compete in the breaststroke and relays. The lone senior on the team is Lauren Brinker. Other returnees include Christen Whitt and Elayna Belt, both juniors. Also on the team are: Juniors Fawn Denbow, Chelsea Hammond and Allison Amore; sophomores C.C. Brown, Meredith Stamper and Andrea Barnett; and freshman Madison Wollard, Shawna Shroyer, Maggie Snyder, Molly Schlupp, Audree Murray, Kristian Meek and Mackenzie Hudson. King has high expectations for Shroyer and Schlupp, who both have experience from non-scholastic swimming. “We are solid in numbers and capabilities,” King said of the girls’ team. On the boys’ team, Trevis Stamper is the only senior on the squad while juniors include Dalton Hammond and Brendan Dickson. “All three of these boys will be playing a huge role in the sprints and specialty strokes, as well as key relay members,” King said. Sophomores are Trevor Wine, Andy Smith and Jade Poorman while Nate Cooper, Michael Hardesty and Jesse Lawrence are freshmen. Gone through graduation are Coleston Pope, a state meet qualifier, and Garrett Gee, a district qualifier. “The boys’ numbers will be our biggest challenge,” King said. “A big challenge will be to figure out where to utilize each one of them for the best results for the team and the individual.” Coach King said Stamper, a newcomer to the team, will help out in sprints and relays while Cooper, albeit a freshman, is an experienced swimmer and will play a key role in not only individual events, but also in the relays.

Black Bears ready for solid season on the mats BY JIM BARSTOW WARSAW - Having been around wrestling throughout most of his life, River View High School coach Devin Klein knows what it will take for the 2013-14 team to be competitive. “We are working very hard to have the best possible year,” Klein said. The Black Bears return three solid seniors to lead the team. Among them are Samuel Grashel, who will compete in the 138-pound weight class while in the upper weights, Christian Blake McKee returns in the 220 pound class while Josh Kempt is back at 285. “Our team will be led by an experienced group of young men,” Klein said. “They have big goals for the team and themselves.” Adding to the mix are juniors Tyler Gunn (132), Brendan Scherer (160), Tim Burris (170), Leeland Lauvray (195) and Cody Wetherbee (285). Grashel, Kempf and Scherer all have experience at the district tournament level. Also expected to make an impact on the success of the team are sophomores Tyler Koch (113), Ki Wright (126), Nick Fitzgerald (145), Adam Croup (152) and Alan Mitchell (285). Newcomers include freshmen Cole Morris (106), Brice Cabe (120), Sawyer Gross (126), Brody Bookless (145) and Lucas Lauvray (152). River View opened the season on Nov. 30, at the Cambridge Invitational and will compete in the Indian Valley Duals on Saturday, Dec. 7. The first home match will come Wednesday, Dec. 11, when the Black Bears host neighboring rival Danville. Another highlight will be the battle for county supremacy when they travel to Coshocton to face the Redskins and Ridgewood. Also, the regular season will be capped off with the annual River View Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 25. “The kids push each other every day in practice which makes them better,” Klein said. “I look for another successful season at River View.”

“We hope to get several kids and relays to the district meet and hopefully even further,” King said. “Obviously we want to win as many meets as we can, but also prepare properly for the end of the season with the East Central Ohio League and tournaments.” “The team is working hard in and out of the pool to prepare for the season and they are meshing very well with our veterans and upperclassmen helping the new swimmers in technique and procedures. The young kids and new members are training hard to develop and learn how things are done.” The Black Bears opened the season on Nov. 25 at Coshocton.

Redskins eye ECOL, tournament run COSHOCTON - Flying under the radar has paid off for the Coshocton High School boys’ basketball team and hopes are that some of that success rubs off on the 2013-14 squad as well. Last year, the Redskins formulated a very nice tournament run, overcoming a sub-500 record to finish with a 10-15 mark to capture a sectional championship before falling in the district semifinal. Dominated by a deep, talented junior class, there is only one senior on the team in wing player Josh Hilgenberg. At 6-foot-1, he represents the most height on the team and is one

of seven returning lettermen. Other returning lettermen from the junior class include 5-9 Damon Miller, 5-8 Sam Magness, 5-8 Jim Magness, 5-10 Patrick Brouse and 5-8 Jim Magness. Also back is 6-1 sophomore guard Connor Roahrig. Also returning from the junior class are 5-8 Gavin Gray, 5-10 Dylan Brown and 5-10 Logan Walters. “We will have to overcome youth, but the kids have varsity experience,” said Hilgenberg. “The lack of size will hurt us but we should have adequate guard play as that is where most of the

The home opener will be Friday, Dec. 6, against Zanesville Rosecrans. Coshocton also hopes to contend for the East Central Ohio League Gray Division title, but Claymont seems to have the inside track while it appears that there will be parity between the Redskins, Meadowbrook, Marietta, Zanesville Rosecrans and an improved River View squad. In the Scarlett Division, Zanesville, Dover and New Philadelphia are expected to be at the top of the heap. In addition to the ECOL grind, non-league contestants include Marion Harding, Fairfield Christian, Columbus Africentric, Licking Valley, Maysville, Philo and Conotton Valley. Assisting Hilgenberg are David Shutt as varsity assistant, Jeremy Ady with the junior varsity and Rick Jamison at the freshman level. Andrew Davis will coach the eighth grade and Judd Baker the seventh. This marks Hilgenberg’s 11th season at Coshocton and his 23rd overall. “I like the way the season has started,” Hilgenberg said. “The kids have had good effort and focus. This is a team that will get better as the season goes along.”
