HOLIDAY TRADITION The Roscoe Village candlelighting tradition spans many years and hundreds of visitors enjoyed a pleasant evening for the first ceremony of the 2015 season. The tree that came alive with lights to the “oohs” and “aahs” of everyone watching was donated by the Steve Jones family and is unique in that it was once their Christmas tree. They wanted the tree to have a second opportunity to delight boys and girls of all ages as it did with their own children years before. Our Town Stories to focus on photographers

COSHOCTON - The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum will be focusing on photographers at its Our Town Stories discussion on Thursday, Dec. 10, at noon. These are the folks who document our histories, from infancy to death.

They also show us places we’ll never glimpse, people we’ll never meet, and experiences we’ll never have. These artists behind the camera are often anonymous—who’s taking their picture?

Help us paste together a history of Coshocton’s professional photographers by bringing your

memories and any archives to the discussion.

Bring along those unforgettable stories about these photographers or about their photographic mishaps, too.

JHM’s Our Town Stories is an informal discussion about “the old days” in Coshocton County. Expect an engaging mix of storytelling, personal recollections, historical records and related items. It is always informative, amusing and surprising. Admission for the program is free, and beverages and cookies will be provided.

Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. one night a week for 19 weeks.

Classes will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 and continue each Tuesday through June 14, 2016.

This year’s training fee is $125, which includes an Ohio MGV manual and other educational materials. All OSU Extension volunteers must also be fingerprinted and return references to be considered.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Franc D’Ambrosio, “Iron Man of the Mask,” is bringing his Christmas concert, “Christmas in New York,” to the Kent State University at Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. This will be his third performance at Kent State Tuscarawas. This family show is co-sponsored by Mix 94.1 Radio and Carpenter Heating and Cooling.

“Christmas in New York,” joyously celebrates the magic of the holiday season with favorite holiday standards from the American Songbook. The show debuted in November 2011 and played too sold out audiences at the famed Rrazz Room in San Francisco in December 2011, to critical acclaim.

D’Ambrosio is best known as the “Phantom” in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award winning musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Affectionately known as “The Iron Man of The Mask,” D’Ambrosio was awarded the distinction as the “World’s Longest Running Phantom,” with more than 2,300 performances of the lead role, a title he held for a decade.

This accomplishment was immortalized in a cemented hand ceremony.

Touring with D’Ambrosio will be Scott Besser, who made his concert debut at the age of 17 as a piano concerto soloist with the Lancaster Symphony. He holds a Bachelor of Music in piano with an emphasis in music industry from James Madison University and has completed graduate coursework from East Stroudsburg University. Teachers and coaches include Patricia Brady, Daniel Fletcher, Chuck Fisher, Barbara Nissman, Debra Ronning and Rhoda Schademann.

Besser’s work as a musical director includes not only touring with D’Ambrosio, but also operas and recitals in concert venues across the U.S. Besser also composes commercial jingles currently playing on radio and television. In addition, he has acted a judge for composition competitions at the regional and national levels for the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Besser currently divides his time between teaching privately in Stroudsburg, PA, in the Pocono Mountains and touring with D’Ambrosio.

 30 youth took part in the Modeling Review and Tasting Smorgasbord at the Coshocton

County Junior Fair. Over 100 members of the community enjoyed the various food items made by the 4-H members and Cloverbuds at the Tasting Smorgasbord. At the Modeling Review, participants showed off 4-H clothing projects or their favorite store bought outfits.

 225 high school students at Coshocton, Ridgewood, River View and the Coshocton County

Career Center participated in Real Money. Real World. simulations. Real Money. Real World. includes classroom time as well as a simulation that provides students the opportunity to make lifestyle and money management choices similar to those made by a 27-year-old adult. After the simulation, many participants became aware of how education level and lifestyle choices influence personal income.

Agricultural & Natural Resources  Nearly 1500 people attended the annual Fall Foliage & Farm Tour October 17 & 18. One third of all participants were from outside Coshocton County representing six states and Nova Scotia. The tour focuses on local farms and agribusinesses to educate people on Ohio’s number one industry- agriculture.

 16 women completed Annie’s Project, a national program designed to educate women about agricultural risk management and encourage the formation of networks for women in agriculture. This six-night course was taught by OSU Extension educators, specialists and local resources and was sponsored locally by Farm Credit Mid-America and PNC Bank.

 150 River View second-graders gained knowledge about “Good Bugs and Bad Bugs” at the first River View FFA Farm Day. Students learned about insect predators, recyclers and producers and also learned that 99.4% of bugs are good!

Journey back in time at the Live Nativity Each scene features live re-enactors as well as live animals including sheep, goats, and camels that the Wise Men use to journey to Bethlehem. Approximately 120 – 140 people participate in the event each year and range in age from late 70s to children. However, a doll is used as the Christ child in the manger scene so that a newborn is not exposed to the elements.

Each year, cars begin showing up at the church at least 30 minutes if not sooner before the event starts. Before long, the road is packed with cars waiting to experience the Live Nativity.

Approximately 800 cars drive through annually with each car holding two to three people.

“I think it makes people slow down and think about the true meaning of Christmas,” said Jackie Wagner, who is in charge of the event.

At the end of the event, each car will receive a letter from the church and a CD explaining the true meaning of Christmas.

“We are showing the true meaning of Christmas and it’s a free gift to the community,” said Wagner. “It’s something we can do to give back, and it’s something that we really enjoy doing.”

Wagner said there are a few scenes that people seem to really enjoy.

“There are three scenes, the marketplace, the manger, and the Wise Men because of the camels,” said Wagner. “The camels get them every time.”

The Live Nativity will be held rain or shine.

COSHOCTON – Journey back to the time of Jesus’ birth during the Coshocton Christian Tabernacle’s Live Nativity on Dec. 11 – 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This unique drive-thru event depicts 13 scenes during the time of Christ, beginning with the market place at Bethlehem and the tax collector’s station to Mary and Joseph being turned away at the Inn. The journey continues with the angels praising the birth of Jesus and the manger scene, and then goes on to celebrate pivotal points in Jesus’ life including Jesus walking on water, His crucifixion, and ends with His resurrection.

DECEMBER 17TH, 1975

It was tragic, catastrophic, frightening and a nightmare. Those words adequately described the fire that destroyed a local industry, resulted in the death of a city fireman, the hospitalization of 61 persons, including police and fire fighters, and caused the evacuation of about 500 families in the east end of Coshocton. Flames of unknown origin broke out in the Buckeye Fabric Finishing Co. plant at 5:04 p.m. Tuesday and continued until early Wednesday. Captain Wilmer Hale of the local fire department lost his life while fighting the blaze when a wall on the flaming building collapsed on him. The flames were fought by firefighters from Coshocton, South Tuscarawas and North Tuscarawas, West Lafayette and Warsaw. Most of the 61 people admitted to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and exposure to toxic fumes were spectators of the fire. Receptacles containing chemicals exploded sending toxic fumes into a wide area in the eastern part of the city. The chemicals further fueled the flames that engulfed the interior of the building. Police evacuated many families in the area. Plant management reported the 20,000 square foot one story structure was a complete loss.

Salvation Army Corps Sergeant Major Grover Carpenter assumed his role as “Donut Man” again that year. The traditional Salvation Army Donut Hut was at the corner of 4th and Main Friday and Saturday. The hut was in operation from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Salvation Army volunteers aided Carpenter in working the hut.

The annual Edmont Christmas party was held at the Armory, boasting 800 total guests and employees. A dinner, provided by the American Legion Auxiliary, preceded the main event, which consisted of a program featuring remarks by Edmont President R.L. Prindle, a presentation by Chairman of the Board of Directors, Edward Montgomery, and entertainment by the musical comedy team the Varja Brothers, from Joliet, Illinois. In recognition of 25 years of service pins and watches were presented to Mildred Tubbs, Draper Varnes, Paul Nelson and Max Williams. Twenty-year, 15-year, 10-year, and five-year pins were also awarded.

Santa Claus and his helpers were working overtime the past week preparing gifts for the Christmas party, held at the American Legion, for the county’s foster children. The party, jointly sponsored by the Coshocton County Child Welfare Board and 40 and 8 child welfare committee of Ralph Courtright post featured a festive program of carols, accordion numbers and selections by the Gingham and Swing’em square dancers. More than 200 presents had been wrapped for Santa to give to the children. James B. Clow and Sons Co. donated the Christmas tree for the party. Miss Hammond said the Christmas party committee received many donations towards their Christmas fund. In addition to the gifts, some 50 foster children received candy bars and soft drinks, which were donated by the American Legion and the Coca-Cola Bottling Works respectively.

COSHOCTON – The Well Christian Ministries is celebrating the reopening of its sanctuary with a concert by Ginny Owens and her band.

The award-winning national Christian artist will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at the church located at 802 Walnut St. Owens will share some of her old songs, tunes from her new album and also perform Christmas music.

“Our sanctuary had a suspended ceiling and old plaster came crashing through it and hit the floor,” said Pastor Jeffery Schmidt. “No one was hurt and no one was where it fell, but it was something that we had to immediately get fixed. It turned into a major project though as we discovered old water damage. We haven’t used our sanctuary since August and we had just opened the church at the end of May.” The congregation spent most of the summer holding services outside on the church’s front lawn and when the weather turned colder moved into the fellowship area.

“This concert is a nice way for us to celebrate Christmas with the community and re-launch our sanctuary,” Schmidt said.

Owens was named the Gospel Music Association’s 2000 New Artist of the Year, has won three Dove awards and multiple ASCAP Awards and sold more than a million records.

Some of her hit songs include, “If You Want Me To,” “Free” and “I Wanna Be Moved.”

“She’s very talented and well known,” Schmidt said.

Connor Roahrig has played since his freshman year and with his leadership skills he will be a great asset to our team this season. Nick Kirkpatrick will be our primary ball handler and his great perimeter shooting capabilities will allow us to stretch the floor out on the offensive end. Andrew Mason and Miles Hardesty are both football players who have great leadership qualities and challenge their teammates each day, and hold everyone accountable on the playing court.

Key newcomers and the impact you expect them to have: Dallas Griffiths is a newcomer this year with strong qualities in rebounding, and defensive stopper. Ashton Jarvis is a newcomer this season after coming off a great JV season last year. He will bring us outside shooting, defensive length, and pressure on defense. Hunter Haas is returning to the Redskins after a year off. Hunter provides rebounding, scoring, defensive pressure, and overall athleticism.

COSHOCTON - A native of Coshocton, Darcie Keirns has always had an interest in sports.

At Coshocton High School, Keirns played basketball, softball, and ran track and served as volleyball manager. After high school, she umpired both men’s and women’s softball teams and is an avid football fan.

After graduation, Keirns attended Zane State College, earning an associate’s degree in business administration. She started her career with McWane Ductile 14 years ago in customer service/inside sales and now works in outside sales. In junior high they could muscle their way through some moves now they have to have great technique.

Meet you are most looking forward to: Barnesville Invite, County Tri, Coshocton Classic, Northwestern Tournament, Athens Invite, River View Invite, Sectionals, Districts, State Overall expectations or goals for the season: The wrestlers want to win every tournament that we are in. They would like to make it to the State Team Dual Finals. They know it isn’t going to be easy but with a lot of hard work and dedication they can. We are one of the few teams that practice twice a day. We wrestle from 5:30 – 7:00 every morning. After school we condition from 3:00 – 4:00p.m. We have been working on the proper time to stop the morning practice, the kids wrestle tired all year until the end of the season. We might lose a match or two during the regular season but win those matches in sectionals and districts.

“They will come into the office and ask if I have any wood for a fire and then we will go out there and sit around and talk,” he said.

The hunters who stay with Smith come from all over.

“Some are from Ohio, but I’ve had them come from as far away as Vermont, Maryland and Maine and also come over from Pennsylvania and West Virginia,” he said. “A lot of the ones from Ohio are just here to get a deer, but a lot of the ones from out of state are here for the big bucks. I have a gentleman from Pennsylvania that comes every year and gets a pretty good size buck.”

Smith knows at least a few other guests had good luck this season too.

Keirns participates in a women’s bowling league, has served on the board for First Step and would consider returning to board service.

She volunteers for many company sponsored events such as Relay For Life, the Salvation Army Christmas Castle and United Way. Her employer, McWane Ductile, encouraged her participation, and with the urging of friends who have participated in Leadership Coshocton, Keirns decided to apply. In the two months since the program started, Keirns states she has “learned so much” and that the program has “exceeded her expectations.” Leadership Coshocton has encouraged her to “step out of her comfort zone” and be a positive voice for the community, to “look at what we do have.”

Like many others, Keirns sees Coshocton as a “resilient community” where “people pull together” when things happen. She states, “it’s getting tougher with businesses leaving, but it is still nicer than a big city - we need to get past the negatives and find the positives. Coshocton is a great place to live - a great small town” and she wouldn’t want to live elsewhere.

COLUMBUS - Hunters harvested 1,536 wild turkeys during Ohio’s 2015 fall wild turkey season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Ohio’s 2015 fall wild turkey hunting season was open in 56 counties Oct. 10 - Nov. 29.

Wild turkeys were extirpated in Ohio by 1904 and were reintroduced in the 1950s by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Ohio’s first modern day wild turkey season opened in the spring of 1966 in nine counties, and hunters checked 12 birds. The wild turkey harvest topped 1,000 for the first time in 1984. COSHOCTON – According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, Coshocton County is currently first in deer harvested this year with a total of 3,433.

The success deer hunters have in Coshocton County doesn’t just make them happy. It also is good news for business owners like Del Smith from Roscoe Motor Inn. “We were sold out for several nights in a row (during gun season) and I saw the same thing the first part of November with bow season,” he said. “This is an incredible time for me because it helps me get through the winter months when business dies down. I love the hunters.”

Smith said the hunters appreciate the cleanliness of his motel, the setup of it with the exterior doors and he often sees them enjoy his

“I’ve had hunters who didn’t get a deer book to come back with their bow or muzzleloader and several have already setup rooms for next year’s seasons,” Smith said.

PARADE The village of West Lafayette did it up right on Saturday, Dec. 5 with a pancake breakfast held by the West Lafayette Lions Club, a craft show was held at the First Baptist Church of West Lafayette with lots to see and do, including great sandwiches and more by the Janusian Club. Planning commission unanimously votes no on rezoning requests COSHOCTON – A standing room only crowd applauded the planning commission for its unanimous decision not to recommend to Coshocton City Council that property on Cambridge Road be rezoned for a housing rental complex.

The planning commission and residents who gathered for the Dec. 1 public meeting heard a proposal from Kevin Brown and Mike Bier of PIRHL Developers, LLC about how their company would like to build 38 rental units with a clubhouse in the area of 437 Cambridge Road.

In order to do that they had to get the city to change the zoning of 4.1349 acres on and around 437 Cambridge Road (former Pretty Products) from M-2 General Manufacturing to R-3 MultiFamily District and 0.344 acres at the southern corner of Cambridge Road and South 12th Street from R-2 One and Two-Family District to R-3 Multifamily District.

The public’s main opposition to the project was that the development would be low income, subsidized housing, but Brown and Bier disagreed.

“Our consultants found that there was a demand here for work force housing,” Brown said. “This is not HUD Section 8, government subsidized or public housing of any kind.”

However, there would be income guidelines for living in the development. A family of four could only earn up to $33,420 and you could make no less than $17,000. Rent for a unit in the complex would be $625 a month.

“For a family of four that is low income,” said Leslie Lenzo McLaughlin.

She found research online that proves that Coshocton County already had more public housing than another other place in the state.

Planning commission member Dan Duren

questioned if this new proposed complex would lower property values.

“I would think these attractively built homes would help support home values,” Bier said.

Jinni Bowman from the Coshocton County Auditor’s Office disagreed. She had already seen two properties similar to this hurt tax payers when owners filed appeals to have their property tax evaluations lowered.

“What most people don’t realize is that when evaluations are lowered other tax payers make up the difference in the tax rate,” Bowman said.

She also questioned the PIRHLrepresentatives emphasizing that they were making a $9,000,000 investment in the community.

“The city and the school district are not going to get rich of off this,” Bowman said. “Some money will be collected under the city income tax while it’s being built but after that only a little will be made if there is someone (being paid) to mow or do maintenance work. People moving from one part of the town to here isn’t going to help.”

Rich Pica, who owns a portion of the property PIRHL was interested in, but no longer agrees to have it rezoned, also felt this housing complex is not needed and will not help the community.

“We have rentals,” he said. “Canal Lewisville (the housing complex there) has openings right now. They are actually advertising in Cleveland to try to get people.”

Duren questioned whether PIRHL would be bringing in people from out of town to live in its new housing units.

“You are skirting the issue,” Duren said. “Are you going to bring people into our community that take and don’t give back?”

Bier didn’t think that was a necessary concern.

“There is no reason why people right here can’t live there,” he said.

Community members at the meeting were not assured by that statement and continued to share their concerns with the planning commission.

“If you build it they will come, but if you give people the opportunity to work they will work,” said Rich Miller. “What message do you want to send to the community?”

Tiffany Swigert, whose husband’s job is one of the many lost with WestRock closing, agreed with Miller.

“We need more jobs,” she said. “Using an industrial property for something like this is not what the city needs.”

Bier questioned how much interest there had been in the property since Pretty Products closed, but Port Authority Director Dorothy Skowrunski said this was an important piece of property to keep in their inventory.

“Coshocton has very little industry property for us to market,” she said. “This also could be a good site for something commercial or a clinic or doctor’s office with its proximity to the hospital.”

Skowrunski also said she would hesitate to put residential housing there because the property hasn’t completed all EPA phases to make sure it is safe.

Both Mayor Steve Mercer and City Law Director Robert Skelton asked if PIRHL would commit to cleaning the site up to EPA standards no matter what the cost.

“It would have to be an economic decision for us,” Brown said.

“My understanding is that we would have three years to develop the property and if we didn’t the zoning would revert,” Brown said.

Bier and Brown also did eventually explain that their complexes do have a percentage of renters who use housing vouchers to help cover their costs.

“Because of fair housing laws we have to accept vouchers,” Bier said.

Mercer wrapped the question and answer session of the meeting up by asking for a show of hands for people who supported the rezoning. No one raised their hands but it appeared everyone did when he asked who was against the issue.

Even though the planning commission voted not to recommend to city council that the properties be rezoned, PIRHL can still take its requests directly to council at one of its regular meetings, which are open to the public.

Chris Neal was one of the many citizens at the meeting who applauded the planning commission’s decision.

“This is a beautiful community and I didn’t want to see this happen,” she said. “I just thank God everybody listened.”

Matt Brillhart, Jonathan Dart and Taner Belangia are all incoming three year letterman. Jorn Hocter and Jake Gossman will round out the starting five.

We also return Trevor Wine, Sam Vickers and Sean Orillion from a team that won the most games in the programs last nine years. Brillhart, Dart and Belangia will fill the bulk of the scoring while Hocter will run the point some and Wine and Vickers will be heavily relied upon for defense and rebounding. Hocter and Belangia are our two best defenders and Gossman will help with scoring and rebounding in the post.

Key newcomers and the impact you expect them to have: Ethan Fry, Warren Cox and Chase Whitehair will see time and are expected to contribute to our up and down style of play and add to our depth.

Overall strengths: Our strengths will include shooting, speed and depth. I am very pleased with our individual defensive effort to this point.

Game you are most looking forward to: We always look forward to our matchups with Coshocton, being a cross county rivalry and given how close the games have been in the last two to three years. It is always such a good environment and fun to be a part of. There’s just a different feeling when it’s time to play Coshocton.

Overall expectations or goals for the season: Overall expectations are to have a winning record, earn a top 10 seed in the tournament draw and contend for the ECOL Grey Division title.

These players must do the bulk of the scoring for us this year. I look for improved play out of these four due to the experience gained last year. I will need to have several other players step up and contribute this year. Carrie Hammond and Cassie Kaufman will need to provide minutes as substitutes for the post players and Sydnee Bice, Cydney Whiteus, Amy Johnson, and Mallory Giffin will need to be in the rotation for the perimeter players.

Overall strengths: The strength of our team is our defense and post play.

We will need to establish an inside out approach to our offense. Defensive pressure and hard play will also be a key to a successful season.

Overall expectations or goals for the season: I look for a much improved season this year. I believe if we play as a team and focus on our strengths we can be competitive this year.

We were able to get all six relay teams to districts and four individual swimmers. The boys 200 free relay just missed a state showing.

Key returning swimmers and the impact you expect them to have: Key returning lettermen for the boys are Nate Cooper, our all around best swimmer and Josh Bigrigg, Jonathon Helmick, Bryar Cox and Caleb Fischer. I expect them to be very solid with Nate and Caleb really helping out in the stroke events and making our relays very competitive. Nate, along with the other men have some individual goals we have set, and are working very hard to reach them. For the ladies we have four year letterman KJ Smailes and Shawna Shroyer returning along with several letterman that RVHS SWIMMING KJ Smailes, Morgan Ashcraft, Natasha Johnson, Lauryn Hardesty, Janay Fetzer, Lisa Jo- have shown tremendous improvement already... hansson, Josh Bigrigg, Bryar Cox, Jonathon Helmick, Adam Croup, Shawna Shroyer, Audree Murray, Kristian Meek, Morgan Ashcraft, Mackenzie Hudson and Madison Kristin Sharier, Mackenzie Hudson, Madison Woolard, Molly Schlupp, Nate Cooper, Cole Bennett, Emily Jacobs, Nela Woolard. We Dec. 19 Away Mt Vernon Invite 9 AM had some big fins to fill from our graduating seniors last year, but these kids Jan. 2 Home Dover 10 AM are hungry and have some very attainable goals. They are putting in the extra Jan. 15 Away ECOL @ Coshocton 5 PM work to reach those goals. We have a nice set of numbers of new swimmers Jan. 16 Away Northridge Classic 9 AM that I am anxious to see how they develop. They are coming along very well.

PTO Volunteer Misty Schillereff was glad she could help Snyder and other students tackle their Christmas shopping.

“It’s fun watching how excited they (the students) get to pick stuff out for their families,” Schillereff said.

The students also are all receiving a special gift this year thanks to an anonymous donation.

“We got a donation last year and gave every student $1 to pick something from the Santa Shop, but we found they weren’t getting something quality,” Milligan said. “This year the donor gave $1,000 so PTO matched that and we joined with Novelty Advertising to get every student something before they leave for Christmas break. It’s going to be pretty cool.”

SALESMAN Kapone Krupp of Minerva sold homemade aprons, gift boxes, and other items during the annual Lake Park Bazaar on Friday, Nov. 27. Kapone and his mother, Lorie Nyla, have been making and selling aprons together for two years. They heard about the bazaar from Kapone’s aunt and uncle who live in Killbuck and walk the paths of Lake Park often. “He enjoys it,” said Lorie. “It was his idea to start the kids’ aprons.

We didn’t used to make kids aprons until one day, he said, Mom what about the kids?”

Eberwine reflects on CCYL November Challenge Day COSHOCTON - On Wednesday, Nov. 18, Coshocton County Youth Leadership had its third meeting this year.

This time, the students from Coshocton, River View, Ridgewood, and Coshocton Christian met up at the United Methodist Church in Roscoe. We had breakfast and then went on our way to Annin’s Flag Company. We then had a tour and went to every job that Annin has. They make over 26,000 flags per day. Then after we learned about Annin, we went over to the Tri
