WINTER WONDERLAND

WINTER WONDERLAND Although winter does not officially arrive on the calendar until next Tuesday, Dec. 21, drivers were wary and school children were delighted (well, probably most of them!) as frigid temperatures and snow covered roads greeted Coshocton County residents this past Monday morning. Remember, not counting today – Wednesday, Dec. 15, only 9 shopping days remain until Christmas. So check that list and shop local this year. BEACON PHOTO BY MARK FORTUNE

Four Paws Friends Pet Adoption Center is now taking applications for their new ”Foster For The Holidays” program, according to Sandi Guinther, President. “To give our volunteers a much-needed rest and to allow our pets to be part of a loving home environment while they wait on their ‘forever parents’ to adopt them, we are sponsoring a “Foster for the Holidays” program from Thursday, Dec. 23 - Monday, Dec. 27. However, if families want to keep the animals through the New Year’s holiday, they can indicate on their application that they will return the pets on Jan. 3. Temporary foster homes are needed for adult cats and dogs along with puppies and kittens. Foster parents must own their own homes, or have permission from their landlord to participate. If there are currently pets in the home, they must be spayed or neutered and be up to date on all their shots. This not only insures safety for the pets being fostered, but also for the family’s own pets. A brief Foster Parent Application can be picked up at Four Paws Thrift Store and Pet Adoption Center at 504 Main St., open 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Applicants can indicate whether they want an adult pet or kitten or puppy. Pets will be fostered on a first come, first serve basis, going by the dates on the application. Currently, the store has 14 dogs and 15 cats ready for adoption. If not adopted, they will all need foster homes for the holidays. “Foster For the Holidays” is a community service project of Four Paws Friends, a non-profit organization working to insure that Coshocton County’s homeless pets find loving “forever homes”.

Holiday gift guide 2010

This holiday season, give the gift of our history. Celebrate Coshocton County’s upcoming Bicentennial in 2011 with the perfect present, “Bridging the Past”, a pictorial view of life in Coshocton County. Treasured photographs from both local archives and contributions from private collections were gathered from our community to create this hardbound coffee table book filled with hundreds of pictures of Coshocton and Coshocton County, some you’ve seen before and many new ones to enjoy. Published by the Coshocton Tribune in cooperation with the Coshocton County Bicentennial Committee, “Bridging the Past” features pictures of buildings, landmarks and memorable scenes from Coshocton’s history from the earliest photographs available to present times. As we look forward to 2011 and the 200th anniversary of our community, “Bridging the Past” helps us commemorate the founding, building, and progression of our county and the lives of Coshoctonians, making this book a wonderful way for parents and grandparents to share stories and memories of Coshocton’s past with their children and grandchildren, and a cherished keepsake for all who have ever called Coshocton County their home. Just in time for holiday gift-giving, “Bridging the Past” can be purchased at the Village Crafter’s Shop in the Roscoe Village Visitor Center, the Pomerene Center for the Arts, Sue’s Hallmark, Triplitt Pharmacy, Auer Ace Hardware, and at the Coshocton Tribune for only $44.21, which includes sales tax. A limited number of this edition has been printed, so once they’re sold out there will be no other opportunity to purchase them. Consider pairing “Bridging the Past” with a reproduction of the 1961 Coshocton County Sesquicentennial book or a Bicentennial t-shirt, both available online at www.noveltyadv.com/bicentennial.html. You can also find the Sesquicentennial book at The Village Crafter’s Shop in the Roscoe Village Visitor Center and at the Pomerene Center for the Arts. The original 1961 book celebrating Coshocton’s 150th anniversary is owned by many people fortunate enough to have purchased it 50 years ago, but now you can own or give a reproduction for only $25. At only $10, a Bicentennial t-shirt makes a terrific stocking stuffer for any proud Coshoctonian. For more information on the Bicentennial’s schedule of events and activities throughout 2011, visit Coshocton County Bicentennial on Facebook or watch the official Web site for continual updates: www. coshoctonbicentennial.com.

The Rising Tide Aquatic Club will be having their first Christmas Stroke Clinic on Dec. 20 – 22 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Coshocton High School. They will be practicing three types of drills: freestyle and backstroke, breast and butterfly, and flip turns and streamlining. The Club is for students ages 5 – 18 who want to learn competitive swimming. Each student should be able to swim the length of the pool without assistance or stopping. There are four sessions a year and dues are $50 per swimmer. Scholarships are available for those who cannot pay. Currently, this competitive swim club has about 100 members on average each year. The goal of the club is to teach kids how to swim competitively and they compete in the mid-Ohio swim league in the summer. Those who would like to join the club must have strong work ethics and work hard to achieve their highest level of swimming. This is a completely parent-run organization with three instructors who swim at a college level. They are Kellie Seward, who swims at Mt. Union; Adam Turner, who competes at The Ohio State University; and Jenn Pyle, who swims at Ashland University. All three were members of the club when they were in high school. “I think it’s pretty cool that they’re coming back and giving back to the program,” said Liz Ringenberg, president of the club. For those interested in signing up to become a member of the Rising Tide Aquatic Club, there will be a registration at the High School on Dec. 29 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Students interested need to come prepared to swim.

Holiday gift guide 2010

For many of us, Christmas is a bittersweet time of year. Even though we find ourselves in the midst of this “season of joy,” many of our hearts are filled with sorrow, loneliness, and pain. We find ourselves remembering persons and events that have been a part of our lives in the past, but that are now changed or gone. In addition, this is the time of year with literally the longest nights and the deepest darkness. It can be a terribly difficult time of year. Once again this year, Roscoe United Methodist Church will be offering a worship service entitled “The Longest Night” during which we will acknowledge and honor our pain, observe time for remembering, privately share our hurting places with the Lord, and then re-claim the healing promises of God. In doing so, we will prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. We will gather in our sanctuary on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. There will be special music, Scripture, silent reflection, healing prayer and the sacrament of Holy Communion. Please join us. Everyone, regardless of church background, or lack of it, is welcome. Bring your family members and friends or come by yourself. You will not be alone. We’ll be there waiting to greet you. The Roscoe United Methodist Church is located at 475 High St., (Historic Roscoe Village), Coshocton, OH. More information can be obtained by calling the church office at (740)622-1138 during regular business hours.

Mom’s famous Christmas sugar cookies

This Christmas season is the perfect time of year to let you know how much we appreciate your business!

By beth dulaney scott

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Mom’s famous Christmas sugar cookies. I remember spending the Sunday before Christmas with my Mom making all sorts of Christmas cookies including chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal, but none were as delicious and fun to make as her sugar cookies. She’d make all kinds of different shapes including Christmas trees, wreaths, stars, snowmen, and of course, Santa Claus. I remember the whole family gathering together on Christmas Eve to visit and open presents, and Mom’s sugar cookies were always the first kind of cookies to disappear. Mom and Dad always made the holidays a little brighter for me and I have many wonderful memories involving putting up the tree and sipping hot chocolate while watching “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” you know - the good one with Burl Ives! While decorating for the holidays and wrapping gifts, Mom and Dad always took time to remind me each year, even when I was very young, who Christmas is really all about. Now that I’m in my mid-twenties and about ready to start a family of my own, those memories really mean a lot to me! Thanks for the memories, Mom and Dad. I love you both!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous new year! - Kelly & Suzanne
