The tree sold for $400 with all proceeds benefiting the Union Hospital Auxiliary in Dover.

Before Thanksgiving, the students in the self-contained class worked together to make a Thanksgiving dinner.

The math department is seeking new and innovative ways to help all students grow this year. The language arts department has been helping students develop a love for reading.

of helping students work through creating a science fair project. This is a long and challenging process, but so meaningful for the students. The social studies department has been working hard to making learning about the past fun and enjoyable topics for all students. The music department has been working hard to help students learn music to share the holiday spirit.

Every other Friday, members of the staff head up various clubs throughout the building.

Students can participate in the Food Club, Video Game Club, Community Service Club, and many others.

If the opportunity arises, take a few moments to stop by the junior high or see the kids at one of the locations when they ring the bells for the Salvation Army.

Here are some upcoming events at the Junior High: Dec. 19: Handbell Choir trip to Kindred (Coshocton Rehab) and Windsorwood to perform. The music students will also be at Buehler’s that day ringing bells for the Salvation Army.

Dec. 20: The RVJH Choirs take a trip to Colony Square Mall.

Around the Christmas table there’s an empty chair this year, And yet our hearts are hopeful, though the season’s bittersweet, Because we know the one we love has filled another seat.

VA healthcare unaffected by Affordable Care Act CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON

COSHOCTON - Veterans who are enrolled in VA’s healthcare system will not face fines when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) goes into effect in 2014 according to the Veterans Health Administration.

Their enrollment counts as health insurance under provisions in the ACA. This is largely thanks to efforts of various service organizations such as the VFW, which resulted in having VA health care recognized as meeting minimum health insurance standards.

“We estimate that only about one-third of Coshocton County’s veteran population is currently enrolled in VA health care and we would like to see that number doubled,” said Jim Barstow, Coshocton County Veterans Service Officer. “I would like to encourage all veterans who are not yet enrolled to visit our office to apply for this benefit.

“If you served in the active military, naval or air service and are separated under any condition other than dishonorable, you may qualify for VA healthcare benefits,” Barstow said. “This can be especially important to those who are struggling to pay escalating insurance premiums.”

Current and former members of the Reserves or National Guard who were called to active duty – other than for training – by a federal order and completed the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty may also be eligible.

VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinics are located in Zanesville, Newark, New Philadelphia and Cambridge. Transportation to and from VA medical appointments can also be provided.

VA says about 8.6 million veterans are enrolled in its health care system and another 6.6 million are eligible to enroll.

COLUMBUS - According to ODNR, hunters enjoyed great weather as they harvested 86,964 white-tailed deer during Ohio’s traditional weeklong deer-gun season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The harvest yielded an anticipated slight decrease of 3.7 percent from 2011, when 90,282 deer were checked.

“The traditional deer-gun week is enjoyed by thousands annually, and this year was no exception,” said ODNR Director James Zehringer. “Ohio’s healthy deer population offers a great source of outdoor recreation to many Ohio residents and out-of-state hunters.”

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer checked during the 2012 gun season: Coshocton (3,119), Muskingum (2,927), Tuscarawas (2,860), Guernsey (2,620), Harrison (2,370), Licking (2,271), Washington (2,163), Knox (2,159), Belmont (2,127) and Carroll (2,062). The order of the top six counties remained unchanged from last year.

Ohio’s week-long gun season was Nov. 26Dec. 2. Hunters also were able to enjoy deer-gun season Dec. 15-16, and archery season remains open through Feb. 3, 2013. The statewide deermuzzleloader season is Jan. 5-8, 2013.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks eighth nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with hunting-related industries. Hunting has an $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

Ohio’s first modern day deer-gun season opened in 1943 in three counties, and hunters harvested 168 deer. Deer hunting was allowed in all 88 counties in 1956, and hunters killed 3,911 deer during that one-week season.

COSHOCTON COUNTY – Mike Downs Jr. killed his first deer in 1992 while hunting with his father, who is also named Mike.

“I remember feeling an overwhelming rush of adrenaline,” Mike Jr. said. “I was 12-yearsold at the time.”

This year Mike Jr. got to watch his son Carter experience the same exciting moment on his first deer hunt.

“He killed his first deer during the youth season,” Mike Jr. said. “He’s 6-years-old, half age I was, but he got it in the same place I took mine. It was meant to be. It was a frosty morning and steam was coming out of his mouth because he was breathing so hard. I told him to hold his breath and get the sites on the deer. He pulled the trigger and the deer fell right there.”

Mike Jr. said the deer was 10 yards in front of them.

“He was at the deer before I had a chance to

Mike Jr. is from Fitchville, but said his family has hunted in Coshocton County since 1990.

“There is really good hunting here,” Mike Jr. said.

The property the family hunts on is owned by Philip Brown, who gives them the run of the place.

“My neighbor was letting them hunt and since the property was side by side I started letting them hunt on mine too,” he said.

Mike Jr. appreciates the hospitality of the property owners his family works with.

“We are fortunate to have landowners who are real welcoming,” he said.

Brown enjoys working with the Downs family.

“They behave and don’t give me any trouble,” Brown said. “They are good guys and actually come down all year because they also bow hunt. They are here from the start of the season to the end.”

Mike Jr. said the family’s whole year revolves around deer season.

“We scout where to put our stands, look for sheds, check our cameras and all that good stuff,”

Leadership focuses on ethics

December 21st, 1952 What started out as a hobby for West Bedford man, John T. Metz, soon became a booming business of 50 years. Metz was a combination farmer and watch repairman who learned his mechanical trade from his cousin through the mail. Metz said every letter he received from his cousin contained literature on watch and clock repair. Metz started his trade in 1902 when he was just 17 years old and was now retiring as an official member of the watch makers’ hall of fame. The first watch he repaired was a dollar watch made by Deuber Watch Co. in Canton. Later, he began repairing Molly Stark watches for women.

1962

December 23rd, 1962 Bracey Davis had a new friend thanks to a local Warsaw man. Davis, who lived in Kentucky, was legally blind and had recently acquired ‘Danger’, a German shepherd who had been donated to the Pilot Dogs Inc. in Columbus by Elbert Quick of Warsaw. The female German shepherd received three months of training at the school and another month of training with her new master before being ready for the full-time job. Quick had donated two young shepherds to the Pilot Dogs before, but only Danger had been accepted. Davis was thankful to Quick for his generous donation.

1972

December 20th, 1972 When the Coshocton Tribune ran a series of ‘Santa’ articles from hundreds of people in the county, the response was overwhelming.

More than $3,000 was raised by the residents of Coshocton County to help make this Christmas a little brighter for needy families.

The largest contribution was $100, and there were several. The smallest was $1.08, contributed by an eight year old boy. A young woman who worked as a dishwasher gave 10 percent of her pay, while another county man was so moved by one letter, he gave $100 directly to that particular family. The Coshocton Tribune editor, John Terry, was named Santa for the year.

1982

December 23rd, 1982 River View Lady Bears had done it again!

For the third consecutive year, they had taken home the victory in the RNRVC Christmas Holiday Tournament. These defending State Champion Ladies ran their record to 8-1 with a crushing defeat over Newcomerstown.

Right away, the Lady Bears entered the game prepared to win with a 10-0 lead over the Trojans. By intermission, the Lady Bears were 30-5 over the Trojans. No more of River View’s first-string players played in the game after the third quarter as the Lady Bears led 42-11. However, in the fourth quarter, the Trojans tried to make a comeback, but it was too little, too late as River View left the game with a 48-22 victory.

During the morning session, the two groups played out and discussed ethical issues facing both teens and adults today such as bullying, cheating, drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure.

Donna Meyers, executive director of Leadership Coshocton County, is hoping that the youth can learn from the adults and vice versa during this session.

“I think the goal is to have interaction between adults and youth,” she said. “The adults can serve as a role model for the youth, and then adults can learn from the youth about what they go through in their lives. Ethics and morality is not age-sensitive. It’s for anybody.

After we have this session, both groups ask if we can do this again. The youth might meet some individual that may help them down the road.”

Father and daughter Todd and Jordan Cognion decided to participate in Leadership Coshocton County together after Jordan heard about the program at school.

“I originally wanted to do it,” said Jordan. “I heard from juniors that were in it last year that you really need to do it. Now that I’m in it, I know what they were talking about. It’s a great experience.”

Todd said that he heard of the program through his daughter and when he learned that Leadership offered a class for adults, he decided to join.

“A lot of exercises have been refreshed from my college days,” he said.

While they do not have classes jointly together, except for today, both agreed that they have taken something positive away from the program.

“I have learned so much about my community that I never knew about,” said Jordan. “It’s kind of changed my view about Coshocton. Now, I see all the great things about Coshocton.”

COSHOCTON – “Take a spin!” It was a catchphrase used by the Coshocton County Career Center to offer interested 2013-2014 students and their parents an option to gather further information about career-tech training and the programs and academic options available to Career Center students. SPIN, Student Parent Information Night, was attended by more than 100 interested parents and students.

“This is the first year we’ve followed our county-wide sophomore visitation event with an invitation specifically for parents,” says Eddie Dovenbarger, Career Center Principal.

Touch of Country Christmas was held Dec. 1213, in the River View High School agriculture education laboratory and included a petting zoo, pony rides by Tom Roahrig’s Triple “R” Stables, cookie walk, games and visits with Santa.

“A lot of the kids might not get a chance to experience something like this so it’s nice to let them come into our school and do that,” Almack said.

The event has been going on for 13 years.

“It’s about the kids,” said Jim Rich, one of the FFA advisors. “Tom (Roahrig) and I talk quite a bit about whether or not we should do it again, but when you see the kids’ faces you know it is worthwhile. I like Christmas time and giving these kids something to come in and see.”

Allyssa McMullen enjoys the event as much as an FFA advisor as she did as a student at River View before graduating in 2007.

“It feels different being an advisor now, but the event still has the same feeling of Christmas joy,” she said. “We get to put smiles on the kids’ faces and show our community spirit by giving back.”

Shayla Hickman were busy keeping rabbits in the petting zoo entertained until more children arrived.

“I like everything about the event and the kids seem really happy here,” Chaney said.

Hickman agreed that the children seemed to be having fun and enjoyed petting the rabbits and their babies.

“The kids are a little shy at first, but we’ve been trying to talk to them,” she said. “I hope they had a good time, liked all the animals and being around older kids.”

Another one of the many people who made Touch of Country Christmas happen was Adam Fisher. He graduated in 2006, but enjoyed helping with the event so much that he comes back to volunteer his time.

“FFA made a big difference in my life, especially this Christmas program,” Fisher said.

“It made me realize I like giving.”

He took care of the music for this year’s program.

“The decorations have gotten a lot more elaborate over the years and we have more animals now,” Fisher said. “Everything looks awesome. When the kids first come in they say ‘wow’ and that excitement is only rivaled by Santa.”

Museum group remembers favorite Christmas gifts COSHOCTON – Joan Johnson still has two treasured Christmas gifts from the 1940s.

“The Blue Willow Dishes were a Christmas gift from an aunt,” she said. “They came from Montgomery Ward and the doll baby my Dad found at the hardware store in Dresden. The war was going on and you couldn’t easily get babies at that time.”

Johnson shared the toys from her childhood during Our Town Stories, which was held Dec. 13, at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum.

The program takes place at noon the second Thursday of each month and gives attendees the opportunity to reminisce about different topics. This month their topic of discussion was, “Toys—Popular and Personal Favorites.”

Margaret McDowell also shared a Christmas memory related to her Dad. He made her a doll house that she has since passed on to a relative.

“I kept the doll furniture though,” she said.

“It’s probably from 1943 or 1944. Every now and then I get it out and take a look at it.”

John Matis also fondly recalled several different toys that were given to him as Christmas gifts.

“I use to get those little tops that you push down on and they’d spin,” he said. “I also liked the wind up trains.”

One of the most memorable gifts Joe Kreitzer received was a transistor radio that his Dad gave him in the 1950s.

“I had index cards that I used to keep a list of all the stations that it got,” he said. “It was over 200. At the top and bottom of the hour I had it up to my ear listening for the call sign and city (of the station).”

One of Mike Adams prize Christmas gifts was his electric train.

“I still have it, just not all the pieces and parts,” he said. “I’d set it up in the den because we had hardwood floors in there and play with it for weeks and weeks before putting it away and then getting it out again.”

In the 1960s Adams also was car crazy.

“I told my Mom I had to have a Rolls-Royce so she bought me a toy one,” he said.

Before sharing memories of their own favorite toys, participants in the program listened to Dick Hoover share information on several pieces from his vintage toy collection.

“This is a never ending toy,” he said. “When it gets to the bottom you just flip it and it starts over.”

The never ending toy was hand painted, but another one of the items he brought was an all rubber Donald Duck toy.

“It was made in Barberton at Sun Rubber,” Hoover said. “The company probably had its heyday in the 1930s to 1940s.”

He also brought a toy depicting The Yellow Kid. “It was the first comic strip character that caught on in America, but he was a bad boy,” Hoover said. “Parents didn’t like him because he caused trouble. It was discontinued after a few years.”

Several other items also were discussed including a Superman action figure and a tin windup toy. Hoover also has a display in the

The final organized event for interested sophomores will take place Thursday, Feb. 21, when the school will open its doors for its 14th annual Open House. The open house serves as both a community appreciation experience as well as a chance for sophomores to gather program and career information. That night the school’s 11 career-tech programs will host business and industry contacts prepared to offer students more information about the types of careers and jobs represented in their field.

Hello, my name is Joel Mason and I would like to take a minute of my time to invite you to join the Branch Church on Christmas Eve. I invite you to come and see what all the fuss is about this season. Just so you know in advance, we won’t be giving lessons on Santa Claus, nor will we be speaking of the hottest new Christmas carol that shares a message of shoppers in their frenzy. No, instead we will speak of the only true thing that reflects the true meaning of Christmas and that is of the baby, who came to this world, and loved us before we loved ourselves; Jesus Christ.

You see, At Branch Church we believe, “Tis the season for THE reason.” Not “tis the season for ANY reason.” I believe there is truly a gift for you and me to celebrate in this day. I believe there is more to life than waking up to die, and I believe there is a purpose for each one of us here on earth. With that said, I also believe that I am not perfect and that I make mistakes, sometimes very willingly. I also know what it feels like to be in a mess in my daily life, because I am just a mortal being.

But, I also know that there is more to life than just running in circles. I believe in forgiveness of sins, and the power of the Holy Spirit. And I can tell you that I learn a little every day about humility and love. Because Jesus Christ came to this earth for me, for you, and like or not, for everyone else under the sun.

Make no mistake, He loves you. And that is why I would like to invite you to join us on December 24th at 7:00 p.m.

If you know Jesus as Lord and Savior, please come celebrate Him with us. And if you don’t, please come and see why we gather to celebrate Him!

SEWARD COSHOCTON - Paula Seward has been nominated to be First Step, FVIS volunteer of the month for December 2012.

In the past two years, she has supported First Step in numerous ways. She has assisted with various fundraisers throughout the year, including the First Step Annual Canal Day Car Show and the Annual 5-K in April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Seward has also spent Wednesday evenings volunteering for First Step at Moose 935 Bingo. She also helped with the Christmas Parade, as the First Step walking Christmas tree.

Seward has selflessly taken time to pick up donations, sorted and organized them for the shelter and clothing room. She initially became involved with First Step in the early years of the agency. She was the first office manager in 1995. First Step staff and board of trustees are very grateful for Seward and all that she has done to better the agency and services to victims of violence.

First Step Family Violence Intervention Services, Inc. mission statement is: “To promote safety to victims of violence through education, counseling, advocacy and shelter when needed to any person suffering the effects of family violence and/or sexual assault. Victims program include: Shelter for victims of domestic violence and assault; 24 hour on-call advocate; individual support services; court advocacy (CPO, TPO, SPO); shelter for pets; 24 hour helpline; community education/presentation; self-defense program; elementary, Jr. High/High School presentations/education programs. Perpetrator programs include 25 week education/prevention program, Men’s Group and Women Who Resort to Violence.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS Angels watched as shepherds arrived to welcome the Messiah at the 2012 Chili Crossroads Bible Church Christmas Pageant. Thirtyfive kids sang in the kid’s choral to celebrate the newborn king. Drama and the adult choir rounded out the evening in the country Dec. 9. The church will celebrate Christmas Eve with luminaries lighting the hilly roads to the beautiful Chili Crossroads Bible Church. Christmas Eve Candle Lighting service is at 9 p.m. “This event is a real highlight of my year,” said Pastor Neal Dearyan. “The candles along the road represent Christ, the light of the world. As we sing carols and hold candles with our family and church family my heart swells with joy.” All are welcome.

BETH SCOTT COSHOCTON - Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation is all decked out for the holidays and had a judging contest Dec. 14 to see who would take home the coveted first place. Four area judges including Mayor Steve Mercer, Todd Shroyer of Coshocton EMS, Sheriff Timothy Rogers, and Mary Beck from the Commissioner’s office, judged seven decorated areas of Kindred to determine a winner.

Staff at Kindred broke up into teams and decorated the entryway, living room, dining room, south wing, central wing, north wing, and the therapy room for Christmas. Each room had a different theme and included the North Pole, Angels, Mrs. Claus’ Bake Shop, Winter Wonderland, OldFashioned Christmas, Island of Misfit Toys, and Let It Snow!

As the four judges went from room to room, bribes were offered (and accepted) by the judges including pens, a sticky note set, cookies, hot chocolate, grape juice, and Santa cookies.

After the judges collected their thoughts over cookies in the dining room, Mayor Mercer announced that The North Pole entryway area had won with a total of 39 points out of a possible 40. The team will receive small prizes for one week as their reward. The Island of Misfit Toys came in second with a total of 37 points.

“Personally, I think they were all really good,” said Rogers. “I think the North Pole and the Island of Misfits were exceptional.”

“I really liked the decorations in the North Pole, but the Island of Misfits went above and beyond,” said Beck.

Third place went to Let It Snow with a total of 30 points. Mrs. Claus’ Bake Shop and An Old-Fashioned Christmas tied for fourth place with 24 points, Angels were awarded sixth place with 21 points, and Winter Wonderland came in seventh with a total of 13 points.

“Thank you to everyone who made this Christmas a real show piece for all of your residents,” said Mercer. “It really looks nice.”

“It feels really good to win,” said Kim Blanton, team North Pole. “But there is a good competition going on. Everybody did a great job. We get to see a smile on the residents’ faces. One resident had tears in her eyes when she saw it.”

“We’ve had a lot of fun talking about it,” said Darla Carlisle, administration coordinator, “You were kind of thrown in with some folks you don’t regularly work with. You get to work with others in a different capacity.”

Kindred is also adopting a family from the Homeless Shelter for the holidays and are collecting donations to help make their Christmas extra special. They are also inviting children to drop off letters to Santa at their facility. Letters must be dropped off by Dec. 21 and Santa will answer each letter personally.

COSHOCTON - The Coshocton Public Library celebrated the Christmas season with a Holiday party last night, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. Children learned Christmas traditions from all parts of the world with a Christmas traditions quiz and how to say “Merry Christmas” in all different languages.

“We love to develop the love of learning and reading in the children,” said Cindy Shutt, Children’s Program Assistant at the library who led the program. “We hope they learn the different Christmas traditions and customs around the world.”

Shutt led the group in a chorus of ‘Jingle Bells’ and the children also played games and made a Christmas craft to take home. Their Christmas craft was candy poppers, also known as Christmas Crackers, which is an English tradition dating back to the 1800s. The kids packed their poppers full of candy and made them out of toilet paper rolls and wrapping paper.

Before leaving, the kids had Christmas snacks from around the world including Spekulatuis cookies from Germany, Danish cookies, pretzels, and punch.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON BY JERRY L. HAYWOOD, FORMER USMC SGT. AND PROUD VIETNAM VETERAN This is the story of a Veteran of Christmas’ past.

Not any Veteran, but an American Veteran. Red, white, and blue, clear through.

This Veteran started out like all of us. He was brought into this world by loving parents.

He walked the streets of his hometown, proud to be from his city and state. As he grew up he loved learning, especially math and history.

A place called Vietnam had escalated. He felt obligated to do his part. So, he joined the service, the service of his country, he joined the fight for freedom, against communism.

He saw and did many things during his tour of NAM! He saw the worst of man and the best.

He was on patrol one day, he only had 25 days to go on over a one year tour. All hell broke loose as the bullets from the ambush ripped through, several men were killed outright, many were wounded as they took cover.

Our Veteran, a rookie no more, was hit, but not seriously. But his best friend was seriously wounded that day. They got to say a few words as he tried desperately to save his life, but couldn’t.

He recovered from his physical wounds. But he had a hard time with the emotional part of his war.

He went on to marry, more than once. An unfortunate, sad, but true fact for many vets.

He and his wife had three beautiful children.

He was there to watch the wonder of their births

before his eyes.

He was successful in every venture that he tried. They weren’t rich, but they were happy.

Their kids did well in school. All three excelled in the classroom and athletics. With guidance, love and being, there for them. Their priorities were kept straight.

But all through the years the vet was haunted by a question all Veterans that live through war ask themselves: “Why did I live?”, “And my best friends die!”

My answer is this. I believe there is a plan or a blueprint for our lives when we’re born. Some call it destiny.

Now is probably the time to let those who are reading this know who I am.

You see I know this Veteran so well, because I am the best friend he tried to save. I never had a brother, he was mine.

But I’m not really the ghost of Christmas past, but I prefer the “Spirit of America”, you see I’ve been his “Guardian Angel” all these years.

I didn’t get to live my life like my best friend, I was only 18 when I left this earth early, my buddy was 20.

But remember this, I could’ve been a Revolutionary War Vet at Valley Forge, or two brothers at odds at Gettysburg or Belleau Woods, Iwo Jima, or Normandy, the Chosin Reservoir, Khe Sanh, or the Ashua Valley, Afghanistan, or

Iraq, anywhere in the world that America has fought for freedom.

My buddy has always honored me flying the stars and stripes, marching in parades, teaching respect and honor to his children.

In many ways I am still alive. The Veterans honor me, so I did not die in vain.

America must never forget the ones that didn’t come home.

I said earlier that I was a guardian angel.

And the great thing is: This is America: You can choose to believe or not to believe. You have: “Freedom of choice!”

This story is not about scrooge and the Christmas ghosts. This is the story of the United States of America and the sacrifices that have been made.

The “Spirits” of America, all 236 years of it.

And for you, Veterans of all branches of the service, from all wars who still feel guilt. Don’t --honor me on Memorial Day and Veterans Day and all through the years by not forgetting our sacrifices: “Some gave all and all gave some!”

My Christmas wish to America: To live each day to the best of your abilities.

Everyone is born with a gift. Use that gift to better America. Always remember, freedom isn’t free!

Some day you’ll have the answers to life’s toughest questions!

Smailes is a graduate of Kent State University with a degree in marketing. He previously was a marketing assistant with Historic Roscoe Village and has additional experience in customer

service and financial accounting.

Babcock holds a degree in business administration from Wilmington College and has experience in retail and manufacturing including manufacturing production supervision.

Both Smailes and Babcock will begin their management training at the main office of Ohio Heritage Bank in Coshocton.

he said. “I like being outside because it’s peaceful and good family time. Carter spends a lot of time in the pre-season scouting with me and hanging stands. We also do a lot of fishing. He really loves the outdoors and totally digs it all.”

Mike Jr. is proud of his son and excited by the special moment they shared.

“He shot him right where he needed to,” Mike Jr. said. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. The stars had to be aligned for this event to take place. I killed my first deer in the same place and it was real special and neat to watch him also do it.”

2012 was another year of sharing and giving in our community as neighbors, friends and family helped many that are struggling through tough economic times. We are all blessed to live in this community.

COSHOCTON - In partnership with the Ohio Benefit Bank, the United Way of Coshocton County is in search of volunteers to take a six hour training that would enable them to prepare free tax returns for qualifying individuals.

Come January, appointments will be taken to prepare free tax returns for individuals who have a combined household income of less than $60,000. Because of this income requirement, this free service could be used by many residents and the need for volunteer tax counselors will be great. No experience is necessary, although a familiarity with the computer is very helpful.

Activities at Kindred. Kindred Coshocton will be adopting a family for Christmas. They are taking donations for a family with three young children. If you would like to donate clothing or toys, please contact Darla Carlisle at the facility for specific requests for this family in need. For this project, Kindred Coshocton is working with the Homeless Shelter. Kindred Coshocton is also serving as a “post office” for the North Pole. Children are invited to bring letters for Santa to our mailbox located in the front lobby. All letters delivered to us by Friday, Dec. 21 before noon will be answered by Santa and his elves before Christmas.

Holiday Party. The Coshocton Senior Center, located at 201 Brown’s Lane, will be having a holiday party with entertainment by Jerome James on Friday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. Please call 622-4852 for lunch reservations.

Three Rivers Bluegrass Band. Three Rivers Bluegrass Music performs on the fourth Saturday of each month at Agents Realty and Auction Services, located at 23024 County Rd. 621 on U.S. 36 and Rt. 621. Admission is $5 a person. There is no charge for children 12 and under. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at 5:30 p.m. furnished by Relay for Life Team Alana. The featured band performs from 7 – 9 p.m. and acoustic jam follows from 9:15 – 11 p.m. The featured band for Dec. 22 is Frosty Morning Bluegrass Band.

Festival of Trees. The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County is looking for residents interested in participating in the Festival of Trees. They have an experienced florist/decorator graciously offering his complimentary services. Please contact the Mentoring Center if you would be interested in this service. They need the community’s participation to make this event successful. Call them at 623-8110 to reserve your tree space or make arrangements to utilize the decorator’s service.

Announcements

Flu Shots. The Coshocton City Health Department at 400 Brown Lane will have flu clinics every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 – 3 p.m. now by appointment only. There is no cost for clients with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. For all other clients, the cost is $20.

AAA9 Cancels November Meetings. The Area Agency on Aging Region 9, Inc. has rescheduled their Regional Advisory Council and Board of Trustees meetings for Thursday, Dec. 20, in the meeting room at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center – WorkPro/Occupational Medicine Facility at 10095 Brick Church Road, Cambridge. The Regional Advisory Council will begin with round table discussion at 9:30 a.m., followed by their meeting at 10 a.m.

Then the Board of Trustees will meet at 1 p.m.

Donate food this holiday season. One out of seven households in the United States are food insecure.

This holiday season, team up with your local Sears Hometown Store owners Bobby and Amanda Chaney in Coshocton and proud partner, The Salvation Army of Coshocton, to take a stand against hunger during their annual holiday food drive. Community members are encouraged to visit the Sears Hometown Store at 480 Downtowner Plaza and donate non-perishable food items. As a thank you for donating, customers will receive a coupon off their purchase. Sears Hometown Stores will collect nonperishable food items through Dec. 29. See store for details. With over 930 locations, Sears Hometown Stores hopes to impact hunger epidemic in communities across America.

Volunteers Needed. Second Chance Homeless Shelter is currently accepting volunteer applications for part-time Resident Advisor positions. The volunteer Resident Advisor helps to provide a positive emotional and social living environment for residents of the shelter. Board of Health meeting. The regular meetings for the Coshocton County Board of Health will now be the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. in the County Services Building.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program. The Coshocton Senior Center is a distribution site for free monthly groceries for low income senior citizens (age 60 and over) living in Coshocton County. To be eligible, your monthly income cannot exceed $1,211 for one person in the household. Add $429 for each additional household member. You can apply for the program at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Brown’s Lane, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 622-4852.

HEAP Assistance. Applications are available at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Brown’s Lane, for the Home Energy Assistance Program. HEAP is a federally funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet their winter heating costs. Assistance is available at the Center or for those unable to stop in, an in-home visit can be scheduled. Please call the Center at 622-4852 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to schedule an appt.

School Hotline. Help keep Coshocton City Schools safe with the new Coshocton City School District School Hotline. Just call 1-866-484-4634 to report threats of violence, fighting, bullying, theft, child abuse, gang activity, cheating, vandalism, and alcohol use. You do not have to identify yourself and your phone number is not recorded.

Toys for Tots. Advanced Spinal Care, located next to Walgreens in Coshocton, is accepting unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots.

Church Events

Revival. Set Free Community Church is having a revival now through Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. each night. Host pastor will be Rita C. Myers. Guest speakers will be evangelist R.A. Duke and Mary Duke. Everyone is welcome. The church is located at 115 S. 6th St in Coshocton.

Nellie offers Christmas candy. Prize-winning peanut brittle and chocolate, pecan and peanut butter fudges are available at Mercantile on Main in Coshocton now until Christmas. Mercantile on Main is open 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and is located at 603 Main St. across from the WTNS lot. The peanut brittle recipe won first place at the 2012 Coshocton County Fair. The Nellie Chapel UMC Talent Project will benefit 100% from the net profits and will fund various mission projects. To order five pounds or more of candy or arrange delivery of candy outside of the Coshocton area, call Becky Bowden at 740327-2235.

Back Door Café. Bakersville Presbyterian Church will have an all-you-can-eat menu of pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and drinks at their Back Door Café on Dec. 20, Jan. 17, Feb. 21, and March 21 from 7:30 – 11 a.m. A $5 donation will be appreciated to continue their community outreach programs. Sweet rolls will also be available for sale.

Christmas Concert. Sheldon Mencer will be having a Christmas Concert at Tyndall Methodist Church Sunday, Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. The church is located at 18091 TR 284 in Coshocton.

Candle lighting. The Coshocton Church of the Nazarene will have its annual candle lighting service, “Carols and Lights” Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary. A celebration of the birth of Christ will include traditional and modern carols and end with the candle lighting service. It is a free celebration and is open to the public.

Heavenly Trumpets. Rudy Cervantes of “Heavenly Trumpet Ministries” will perform Dec. 30 at 10:45 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Coshocton Church of the Nazarene. Rudy has performed in concert all over the United States. He plays a variety of music styles to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, show the love of God to nonbelievers, and encourage those who are already in the faith. This is a free performance and is open to the public.

Community Shoe Drive. Prairie Chapel Youth Alive for Christ is having a Community Shoe Drive now through Feb. 10. You can drop off your donation of gently-used or new shoes to Wilson Carpet & Furniture, Carroll’s Men Shop, The Three Rivers District Office on 415 Walnut St., or to Prairie Chapel UMC on US 36. The youth will be dividing the shoes up among local destinations, The Open Shelter in Columbus and to Souls for Soles in Africa. For the churches attending the Three Rivers District Leadership Event on Jan. 26 at Grace UMC, the youth will have a table set up where you can drop off your shoes. Calling all Kids!. Coshocton Baptist Church and the Coshocton McDonald’s are teaming up to share information about the Ronald McDonald House in Akron. Kids in preschool through 8th grade are invited to join their AWANA clubs. Meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 8 p.m. at the Coshocton Baptist Church on Denman Avenue. Fresno Bible Church AWANA Club: AWANA Club for children ages 3 to sixth grade will be every Wednesday night from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Some fun activities will include contests such as dress in your favorite sports team colors, silly hair and more. For information, call the church at 545-7382.

Community Dinners. The Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church has a community dinner the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The dinner is served at the Burt Fellowship Hall on Orange Street. The Presbyterian Church located at the corner of 4th and Chestnut, has a community dinner the third Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The dinner is served in the Fellowship Hall located in the basement of the church. The Park United Methodist Church at 122 Park Ave. has a community dinner the fourth Wednesday of every month. The dinner is served in the fellowship hall from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Jacob’s Closet. The new winter hours for the Warsaw’s United Methodist Church’s Jacob’s Closet is Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. – noon and 5 – 8 p.m. During the months of January and February, the Closet will be open only the last Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. – noon and 5 – 8 p.m. At this time, they are asking only for winter clothes to be donated weekdays from 9 a.m. – noon.

Dr. Gwinn has served Coshocton County as a board-certified family practice physician since 1983. He earned his doctor of Osteopathy from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa, and served his family practice residency at Fairview Hospital, an affiliation of Case Western Reserve University.

Beyond his medical practice, he has also been active throughout his career as the medical director for a number of community health care entities including Coshocton County EMS, Hospice of Coshocton, Inc., and Newcomerstown Emergency Rescue. He has also served as the Coshocton County Coroner since 1992.

The Coshocton Hospital Management Executive Team oversees the operations of the hospital and its hospital-based clinics and services and includes Robert D. Miller, CEO; Stephanie Conn, RN, MSN, chief nursing officer; Steve Feller, chief clinical support officer; Richard Wood, interim chief financial officer; Richard K. During their regular meeting, the Commissioners also signed a resolution for a bed rental agreement between the Muskingum County Commissioners and the Coshocton County Commissioners. The agreement guarantees Coshocton use of beds during 2013 at the Muskingum County Juvenile Detention Center.

“Juvenile housing in the state of Ohio is tight,” Shryock said. “Sometimes when you needed it there was no place to send them. This gives us four beds, two regular and two floating.”

According to the Court of Common Pleas, Coshocton County Probate and Juvenile Division 2011 annual report, 81 youth stayed at the facility in 2011 for a total of 1,444 days. The cost that year was $108,782.

“We had four there at the beginning of the week and have one there now,” Schonauer said.

“We average 3.5 to 3.8 per day.”

The Commissioners agenda also included meeting with Bernie Minet and Todd Shroyer about an EMS building fund.

“They cannot use levy money for this,” Shryock said. “They need to establish a fund to put money into.”

Work on a new building is a couple years away, but the Commissioners said EMS would like a location in the Canal Lewisville area to help them speed up response time in that part of the county.

“A difference of six, seven or even eight minutes is a big deal,” said Commissioner Curtis Lee. At their Dec. 12 meeting the Commissioners also: - Reappointed Renee Guilliams, Patti Malenke and Chad Miller to the Convention and Visitors

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Commissioners discussed a wide range of topics at their Dec. 12 meeting.

Breanne Mathews, chief deputy treasurer, attended the meeting on behalf of Janette Donaker, county treasurer. She presented the Commissioners with the Coshocton County Investment Portfolio for November 2012.

“We are at 112 percent of our estimated $125,000 interest income,” Mathews said.

“We’ve gotten a better rate of interest on a couple of our investments than we expected.”

Doug Schonauer from Coshocton County Probate and Juvenile Court and Cheryl Smailes from the Coshocton County Auditor’s Office also were at the Commissioners’ office Dec. 12 for an employer/employee relations committee meeting.

During the meeting, Smailes brought up the need for basic first aid kits in the various buildings that the Commissioners maintain.

“It’d be nice to be able to give someone a compress or Band-Aid if they got hurt,” Smailes said.

Schonauer said that his department has the kits and Mary Beck, the Commissioners Clerk, said some departments have bought them their selves to keep in their offices.

“We will discuss the issue with Tiffany Swigert (the regional planning director/safety coordinator) and get back with you,” said Commissioner Dane Shryock. “You are right that basic first aid kits do need to be in every building.”

Smailes also suggested that someone in every building be certified in CPR and Shryock said that topic also will be discussed with Swigert.

The group plans to meet again on March 13,

The floor joists were also hand hewn which indicates a lack of a saw mill close by and also dates the structure.

Most of the joists in other cabins the company encounters are sawn. The rafters are called pole rafters which are small logs (approximately 5” diameter), that are hewn flat on one side and are pegged together with wood pegs. The cabin has had siding added to it a couple times with the original siding being walnut. The first story floor is T&G Oak. Second story floor, which would have been seen from below, was T&G Maple and poplar (Maple was over the area where people would enter/visit and poplar was over the area which would have been the kitchen). The cabin originally had an interior fireplace, but was removed sometime in the past.

Antique American Log Cabins believes the cabin dates around 1860s to mid 1870s.

It took three days to strip the cabins interior and exterior by hand and three days to deconstruct the cabin itself and haul it back to the reclamation yard in Athens, where it will be reconstructed, repaired and put in storage until a buyer is found. The company will then transport the cabin and reconstruct it anywhere in the US. Antique American Log Cabins has reconstructed more than 50 cabins and timber framed barns in nine different states. All of the cabins it’s deconstructed have been destined for the wrecking ball, bulldozer or a match, saving them for generations to come.
