Fifth grader Annie Bosson likes to share with her Prayer Person what’s been going on in school. “Since it’s been a long time since they were in school I tell them about that and what I’m doing in my life,” she said. “I also send them cards for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas and all the holidays.” Bosson ran into one of her Prayer Persons at the library. “She gave me a big hug and thanked me for my prayers,” she said. Josie Fornara enjoys having a Prayer Person. “I think it’s really cool,” said the fifth grader. “If they don’t have grandchildren they can feel like they have some. I tell them how my days go, what books I’m reading and about my gymnastics.” Sixth grader Mattison Harrison also tells her Prayer Person about school and sends holiday cards. “It’s been a good experience that I’ll look back on,” she said. Sacred Heart students are making sure the homebound, sick and elderly are not forgotten. “Students have Prayer Persons that they send cards and letters to and invite them to the Special Friends Mass if they want,” said Pat Andrews, who coordinates the program and also teaches fourth through sixth grade religion and social studies. “They also promise to pray for them every day.” The students are assigned a Prayer Person in third grade and stay involved with the program through sixth grade. Andrews gets the names for Prayer Persons from the church office. “When I need names of Prayer Persons, they let me know who they know from our parish that could use our prayers, cards and letters,” she said. “Many are visited by our parish deacons. They are usually people from Sacred Heart that have lost a love one, been ill or hospitalized, have no family left, or have relatives who live far away.” The Prayer Persons program is a community service project for the students and they are asked to contact their person at least once a month. Nothing is expected of the Prayer Person. “At this time we have a waiting list to draw from whenever one of our Prayer Persons passes away or moves out of our county,” Andrews

Kevin and Kent Doherty, who told her about the Grace Clinic, a clinic the two had started in Columbus which purpose was to provide healing to area residents who might not be able to afford a doctor’s visit. Out of this idea, the Hope Clinic in Coshocton was created through the hard work and dedication of many local people, and opened its doors at the Coshocton County Career Center on Sept. 10, 2009. The mission of the Hope Clinic of Coshocton is to love God and love people and to use medicine as a vehicle to share the gift God gave us in Jesus. The Hope Clinic has since moved from the Career Center to 131 S. Sixth Street, a building which was donated to them, where they saw 25 new patients the first three weeks they were open. The clinic is set up just like a doctor’s office with a waiting room, a registration desk, five exam rooms that were donated by area churches and healthcare facilities, a child care

More than 2,300 patients have been treated with 742 seeking ministry in the prayer room, and 1,485 have submitted prayer requests, as of March 1. The all-volunteer staff has provided an amazing $349,653 worth of services to the community. “Jesus said the greatest in the kingdom of God are the servants, so that’s where we want to be, serving people,” said Mark Granger, pastor at New Life Ministries in Warsaw. “You run into a lot of different people, but there are some people who think they have it coming to them, but there are so many people that come through here that just thank you and thank you because they’ve been helped so much. Not only helped physically but they’ve been helped spiritually through prayer and just knowing that somebody cares. We all face things that are bigger than we are and we’re not going to make it without one another and we’re not going to make it without God.” The Hope Clinic offers a variety of services including but not limited to blood sugar tests, EKGs, rapid strep tests, pregnancy tests, and influenza A/B tests. Two doctors are on staff once a week to see to your physical needs while a pastor or members of churches in Coshocton are stationed in the prayer room to see to your spiritual needs. We’ve even had people come in off the street and ask for prayer. To us, the basic thing is we want them to see Jesus Christ through us. Everyone needs to know the Lord and we believe that’s why we’re here. So we’re just trying to serve and trying to do what we feel the Lord wants us to do.” Any patient who needs treatment must be uninsured. However, you don’t need to be uninsured to ask for prayer. “If you need prayer, you can come,” said Merrell. “Just because you need prayer and you have insurance doesn’t mean you can’t come. We hope they see something special in the volunteers that make them feel a little bit better. That’s what it’s all about. We want them to know that we care and we love them and are worried about their health and their spiritual health. We hope that when they leave, they feel that they’ve been in a place where people care.” All volunteers at the Hope Clinic work voluntarily and donations to the clinic are used only for materials and supplies. The clinic’s doors open at 5 p.m. every Thursday. “We just continue to pray that what the Lord has in mind is what the Hope Clinic will become,” said Merrell. Trinity Episcopal Church wants to share its love of the arts with the community. “Trinity has historically been a strong supporter of the arts,” said the Rev. Diane Cook. “We have a number of members who are active in the artistic side of the community.” Several of the church’s choir members sing in the Community Choir, there are members who have a long time connection with the Footlight Players and the rector before Cook was a photographer. The church council decided it would be fun to highlight the talents of its congregation and other community members. “There are so many people in our community that are really talented,” Cook said. Trinity and the Arts will be held once a month on Saturday nights with the first event set for 6 p.m. Saturday, April 14. Tom Edwards, a local author, business owner and city councilman will speak about his books, “Ode to the Outhouse” and “Works of Wisdom from my Drill Sergeant and My Uncle Clyde.” His presentation and future ones will be followed by a dinner. April’s meal will be soup. “So many people drive by the church, but have never come in,” Cook said. “We hope they come and enjoy themselves.” Cook said the church is also talking about partnering with the library on programs. “We are right next to each other and we could share resources,” she said. Another program will be scheduled for May. Then the church will take a break for the summer months before starting back up again in September and running events through the school year. “We are working on something for May that will attract a nice young crowd,” Cook said. She hopes to offer programs that will appeal

New building helps Liberty Church grow

Liberty Church has grown in leaps and bounds since 2006 and they now have a building where they can continue to do that. “God called me to start a church,” said Pastor Andy Loos. “There was no should about it. God said start a church and that’s what I did.” According to the church’s website, the first service was held in a rented room at Kids America. It then had two locations on Main Street and now calls the old V.F.W. building home. “We had 15-20 at our first service and now there are 80-90 in attendance on Sundays,” Loos said. “This spring we are looking to really start to breakout with events and outreach projects.” The children’s room at Liberty Church’s

old building was overflowing and the previous location also was not handicapped accessible. The new facility at 219 N. 15th St. is easily accessible for the handicapped and elderly and gives the church a basement to dedicate to its youth. “It also gives us storage,” Loos said. “We had to refrain from doing different things in the past because we had no place to store things.” The basement will provide room to minister to the youth, do craft projects with them and play games. “They will come down the elevator and be in a secured area with our trained leaders who will make sure they are safe,” Loos said. “We have 50-70 kids right now and we are ready to Now accepting new admissions for short start growing more.” term rehabilitation and long term care. and come be with the Lord. It’s just a different approach.” Loos said the house lights are turned down during the Liberty Extreme service and the stage lights are up. “It’s a relaxed atmosphere,” he said. “It’s also a nonthreatening atmosphere for people that aren’t use to going to church.” The church has received several enquires about the service. “We get phone calls asking if anyone can come and once they do they love it,” said Jon Hutchison, care pastor. The church also has fellowship with coffee and donuts at 10 a.m., contemporary worship service and Liberty Kidz, both at 10:30 a.m. and evening worship at 6 p.m. on Sundays. Thursday nights also feature Ignite Youth from 6 to 8 p.m. for grades seven through 12, and EMS (Eliminate My Sin, Elevate My Savior) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for 9 to 13-year-olds. “We reach families through these youth program too,” Hutchison said. “There is one child who started EMS then his sister started coming then his mom and dad. It’s a testimony to the way the church works.” The pastors feel their new location is perfect for serving those who already attend and those who are looking for a church home. “The most important thing is that we give people a place to worship no matter their economic condition, race or age,” Loos said. “We want to break down any barrier that holds people back from each other and God.” Bromberg agreed with Loos. “Church is not a place where perfect people go,” he said. “It’s like a hospital where the broken go to get better.” Both he and Loos believe there is a great revival coming to Coshocton. “People here are going to come together to change the spiritual climate of the city,” Loos said. “When that happens you will see a moral revival and less mental disorders, substance abuse and disrespectful youth. It’s important that people get hold of God.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Ministries

We are pleased to announce the Grand Opening of our New Worship Facility! It is our prayer that this extension of our Ministry will help us better serve the needs of our community and your family!

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

MMS Aviation Prepares Planes for Missions

WORKING ON PLANES MMS Aviation, located at the Richard Downing Airport, has been preparing people and planes for mission services for almost 40 years. Every airplane at MMS Aviation has a story. Several MMS crew members were sent to Africa when an aircraft crash landed and needed repaired. When the MMS crew couldn’t repair the plane in Africa, they took it apart piece by piece and shipped it by boat back to New York where it was placed on a train to Columbus and finally arrived in Coshocton on a truck. Crew members at the MMS Aviation facility repaired the damage to the plane and shipped it back to Africa to complete its work there. “We send teams offsite,” said Dwight Jarboe, president and CEO of MMS Aviation. “Not everything happens here. We send our people all around the world.” Another aircraft frame was found in Alaska and brought to the facility in Coshocton to be transformed into a floatplane and will operate on the Amazon River. The plane was completely restored at MMS Aviation and installed with floats,

For almost 40 years, Missionary Maintenance, located at the Richard Downing Airport in Coshocton, has been fulfilling their mission of preparing people and planes for worldwide mission service. Aircrafts come in from all over the world to be repaired, tested, and readied for spreading the Word of God to foreign countries. These planes are used to move missionary personnel and leaders to their destination while carrying supplies and materials in support of Christian ministries. In the event of a disaster, they are also used to carrying emergency medical supplies to those in need. A few of the planes Missionary Maintenance prepares for missionary work have never operated in missions and come to the Coshocton facility to be prepared and tested for entering an already existing fleet. In addition to repairing aircraft for the about 120 Christian organizations who use airplanes in their mission work, Missionary Maintenance also trains aircraft mechanics from all over the world through a 30-month apprenticeship program. At the end of their training, they will receive their FAA mechanic certificate. “I just wanted to work with airplanes,” said Phil Maddux from Kansas. “I enjoy working with the guys. I enjoy the fact that we’re all believers and at the end of the day, I can see what I’ve done.” Maddux has been in Coshocton for three years.

Groups in Coshocton Churches strong

Churches in Coshocton County have been blessed with teens and children who attend and are active in their youth groups faithfully. These youths not only make a difference in their church, but also in the community through various projects and missions. “It’s fun and it’s challenging,” said Mark Gibson, youth pastor at Roscoe United Methodist Church, “The unique challenge is the fact that the kids who are involved are also involved in other activities. To their credit, if they don’t have something else to do, they are always here.” The Roscoe United Methodist Church has about 10 – 15 youths involved in their youth group. At 5:30 p.m., they all sit down together in the fellowship hall and have a meal provided by the church and then enjoy various activities together including games, Bible Study, and watching music videos. In addition to meeting once a week, the Roscoe Youth Group has also participated in the CROP Walk and Fools for Food to raise donations for food pantries. They have also just finished sending care packages to teens in the church who are away at college or in the military. “We try to do one special activity a month,” said Sherri Gibson, youth pastor. Bible School crew leaders in June, and last December, they had a movie night where they watched “Soul Surfer” and had a beach party. This Easter, the youth will be in charge of the Sunrise Easter Service with a lock-in the night before and breakfast together in the morning. The Sunday after Easter, April 15, the youth will be hosting Aaron Mencer’s band, “Where Words Fail” in concert at 5 p.m. at the church. Any teen, even those who do not attend the Roscoe United Methodist Church can be involved in the youth group. used for a meeting place for the PBJ group on Sunday nights. Another PBJ group meets at The Meadows on Sunday night as well. The mission of the PBJ group is to meet a small need and share Jesus. For the Lenten season this year, the teens have shown their dedication by following the Busted Halo Web site, which makes daily suggestions on what to give up for Lent. Instead of giving up just one thing for Lent, the teens decided to use this Web site to give up something different each day. One suggestion might be to give up social networking for one day or to give up transportation for a day and walk. During the summer, teens at the Nazarene Church share the love of Jesus at Echoing Hills where they spend a week interacting with peers their own age who have special needs. They also voluntarily conduct a 30-hour famine where they raise money for children in poverty. The children’s youth group at the Nazarene conduct their Bible Study like Vacation Bible School where they travel to three different stations throughout the evening and learn their lesson three different ways through music, Bible Study, and crafts. There are also 30 children on the Bible Quiz Team where they test their Bible skills and compete against other churches in their district. Other activities the youth group at the Nazarene Church are involved in include Party Like a Princess, which is all sold out this year, and Boot Camp for Boys which over 30 boys attended last year. Another church with plenty of fun activities for the youth is the Coshocton Presbyterian Church. The Presbyterian Church has two children’s groups, one for kindergarten through sixth grade and one for seventh and eighth grade that meet on Tuesday nights and a high school group which meets every other week on Tuesdays. The kids meet from 5:30 – 7 p.m. and the high school group meets 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the church.

Youth “I try to do something brief,” said youth pastor Erin Jobes. “Because I want this to be fun and so they invite their friends. I want this to be a place where they want to be.” The children’s group watches a short video and has dinner together. Then, Erin always asks them about the best and worst thing that happened to them that week and asks them a ‘question of the week’ which could be anything as simple as, ‘If you were an animal, what would you be and why?’ “The kids enjoy it because it gives them a chance to talk and relate to one another and it makes them feel important as an individual,” she said. They play games during the evening like Catch Phrase or Apples to Apples. The youth groups also have activities throughout the year. At Christmas time, they bake cookies and take them to shut-ins in the

Initially I started out thinking I was going to be a pilot but when I started working with my hands, I really enjoy the technical and the handson aspect of the work, so I really, really enjoy the maintenance.” Coates has been here for 19 years. building and to the office. They have also been able to purchase a new forklift and specialty aircraft testing equipment. All engines are tested and operated before going into an aircraft to ensure they are running properly without any defects. Although MMS Aviation works with people all around the world, they will also do maintenance on a local pilot’s aircraft as well. MMS Aviation has helped an average of 15 faithbased organizations annually. church and community. They also participate in the Super Bowl of Caring where they collect money and give to the Salvation Army. One Sunday in May, the youth is in charge of the Sunday service and a senior in high school gives the message. For Easter, the high school youths stuff plastic eggs with candy and hide them in the chapel for the younger kids to find. “A lot of the kids who looked for the eggs are now the ones stuffing the eggs and they think that’s great,” said Erin. The youth group recently had a $5 prom night where everything they wore had to cost no more than $5. Because it was Dr. Seuss’ birthday, they had a Dr. Seuss theme with decorations, music, and refreshments. “Anything they can all do together is a good thing,” Erin said.

Mission teams from New Beginnings Ministries recently returned from Paintsville, Ky., which was devastated by a tornado. While there they helped local residents sort through debris and search mostly for photos. The church also prepares and serves food at the Ronald McDonald House, which is across from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. The church does this to help lift some of the burden and expenses placed on families who have children in the hospital. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON
