Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival launches spirits every June This will be the 31st year for balloons to take flight over the rolling hills and farms of Coshocton County, Ohio. The Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival, presented by the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Frontier Power, is the longest-continuously running hot air balloon festival in Ohio. This year, the event will be Friday, June 8 through Sunday, June 10, with launches and fly-ins taking place, weather permitting, at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds located at 707 Kenilworth Avenue in Coshocton. Admission, parking, and musical entertainment are free. A full slate of fun and entertainment will also take place over the weekend at the fairgrounds. Visitors can enjoy midway attractions, craft booths, antiques flea market, carnival rides, fireworks, photo contest, kiddie tractor pull, karaoke, nightglow, musical entertainment, food vendors and many other family-oriented activities. On Friday night, enjoy free musical entertainment including a ‘Johnny Cash’ tribute by Kevin Oliver, and music from the local country band Route 83, followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks display is sponsored by Coshocton County Safety Council. Saturday entertainment runs from 3 - 9 p.m. with a variety of live music from several groups including the Band It Band, Lonesome Meadow, Timothy Paul, and the Flat River Band. The popular balloon ‘Night Glow’ then takes place around 9:15 p.m. Throughout the day Saturday and Sunday, RD Promotions will have karaoke competitions. The entertainment for the Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival is sponsored by Jeff Drennen Dealerships. Balloon launches and fly-ins will take place, weather permitting, on Friday, June 8 around 6 p.m.; Saturday, June 9, around 6 a.m. and again around 6 p.m.; and Sunday, June 10, around 6 a.m. Carol Remington, Executive Director of the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce said the balloon sponsorships have been wonderful. “We have 22 balloons this year,” said Remington. “We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated sponsors each year and we are so pleased that Frontier Power is our major corporate sponsor again.” Kelly Kendall, Manager of Administration and Office Services at the Frontier Power Company, is pleased that Frontier Power is able to sponsor the Balloon Festival again this year. “We feel it’s a way of giving back to our community and the surrounding areas,” she said. “We also like the fact that it’s a free event and we want to keep it that way – free admission, parking, entertainment and most importantly, free hot air balloon viewing!” Kendall says Frontier Power is involved in several ways with the festival. “This is our sixth year as the major sponsor for this event and we’ve had a blast being part of it all,” said Kendall. “Frontier Propane provides the propane for the balloon pilot’s tanks which they need to fly. Frontier Power and Frontier Propane employees volunteer their time to work in the information tent, crew for balloon pilots, fill propane tanks and do anything else that may be needed for the entire weekend. THE BEACON This year’s Balloon Festival will begin the 2012 season for the Singing Showdown competition. The Singing Showdown is a karaoke-based singing competition open to anyone 16 years old and above. Preliminary rounds are usually at Coshocton’s First Fridays where potential contestants sing for three judges who determine whether or not singers are selected for the finals. Judges are looking for knowledge of the song, stage presence, and audience approval. The Singing Showdown offers a wide-variety of music including mostly country, pop, and today’s music. Their goal is to visit at least six different venues throughout Ohio each year. This year, in addition to the Balloon Festival, they will be performing at the Dresden Homecoming, the Marion, Ohio County Fair, the Dennison Depot Festival, and the Coshocton County Fair. “We do a lot of other things outside of the competition to promote the competition,” said Rick Williamson, owner of RD Promotions. “Usually, it’s a karaoke where anybody can come and sing and it’s all to promote the contest. We like to go out and see the public and just have fun.” Although it’s too late to try out to sing at the Balloon Festival, anyone who still wants to be a part of their 2012 season has one last chance to make it to finals. They will be having auditions on Saturday, June 9 at the Depot Pub in Dresden. Email singingshowdown@yahoo.com for more information. So far, four contestants have made it to the finals. They will be singing at the Balloon Festival on June 10 at 1 p.m. in the grandstands. First place will receive $100 and a gift certificate from the Depot Pub, second place will receive $50 and a gift certificate from the Depot Pub, and third place will receive a gift certificate from the Depot Pub. Donations will also be accepted at the event for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. “It’s just something small that each year gets bigger and brings more people into Coshocton County,” said Williamson. “We want people to come into Coshocton. If you are heading out to the balloon festival with the kids, you’ll want to be sure to stop by Safety Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9. The event, which has been done in the past, is being brought back by Donna Fischer from Farmers Insurance. Safety Saturday will feature the various fire departments, emergency medical services, the Highway Patrol and MedFlight, if they do not have a run. “In the past the guys (firefighters) have really liked it,” Fischer said. “I asked them to show what’s unique to them. Something the kids will remember them by.” Parents also will be given a free home organizing CD. “It has a purchase value of about $40,” Fischer said. “It’s the first step in the Amber Alert system. You can put in information such as Joey has a birth mark here and here and then if something happens hit a button and your child’s information is sent to police departments.” Fischer said that children are reported missing everyday in the U.S. “It’s a way to get the information out there (if something happens),” she said. “The first few hours are critical.” The system also includes a place for your child’s picture. “We are going to try to take pictures (at Safety Saturday) and e-mail them to parents so they can download them,” Fischer said. Parents will be given a form to fill out and Fischer asks that they at least include their current e-mail address so she can follow up with them. She also is planning to use the back of the form for children to mark off which Safety Saturday stations they stopped at. If they visit all of them they will be entered to win prizes. Auer Ace Hardware is donating prizes for the event and Fischer plans to at least have one bike to give away. “I want to take a day out to focus on safety,” Fischer said. “I also hope the firefighters give the kids something to remind them of the safety lessons they learned in school. Hopefully they also see the vehicles and aren’t afraid of them. I want them to know that they are there to help.” The Farmers Insurance customer care unit also will be there. Attendees will have the chance to purchase glassware, coins, furniture, war relics, paper collectibles, old jewelry, advertising items, wall art, old photos, graniteware, books, tools, old toys, post cards, knives and other collectibles. Items also can be brought in and appraised from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays of the flea market. Each weekend of the flea market also corresponds with other fun activities in the community. The hot air balloon festival is going on during the June weekend, a tractor pull takes place in July and Canal Days is going on in August. The farmers market also will be at the fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The Coshocton Antique Flea Market is the place to be if you are looking for vintage or historical items. The flea market, which is sponsored by the Coshocton Agricultural Society, will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10, July 14-15, and Aug. 11-12, at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds in commercial building two. In June the flea market will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. July and August hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. “People are going to find treasures I hope,” said Erma Miller, manager of the flea market. Her interest in yearbooks got her into the business. “I went to auctions and garage sales and ended up with duplicates I was able to sell at flea markets and make other people happy,” Miller said. One time she helped a women get a yearbook that had a photo of her son who passed away. “It was her child’s graduation yearbook and he had died before he graduated,” Miller said. “They just cried and cried. They didn’t know where to pick one up so when they saw it they bought it.” Miller is the youngest of nine children and has collected yearbooks featuring her siblings and her children. “Yearbooks help people reminisce with friends,” she said. “They like to see what they looked like then compared to now. Some people like to see the signatures too and others don’t. I have them both ways.”

Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival Pilots Pilot # 1 Name: Sean Askren Hometown: Middletown, OH Balloon Name: State Farm Sponsor: State Farm Insurance Trivia: Sean is the owner of Askren Air, the premier hot air balloon company in southwest Ohio. If you need the job done, call the “A” team. This is Sean’s third time flying in Coshocton, and he couldn’t wait to return. Pilot # 7 Name: Rick Cusick Hometown: Lima, OH Balloon Name: Arrythmia Sponsor: Coshocton County Convention and Visitor Bureau Trivia: Rick has been flying in Coshocton since 1986 and really enjoys the people and the flying area. She became hooked after the first flight and began crewing for Sean. Two years later, she bought her own balloon and got her pilots license and has been flying for over six years and enjoying every event and minute of time in the air. Her favorite quote is from Leonardo Da Vinci - When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.
Pilot # 8 Name: Mike Emich Hometown: Akron, OH Balloon Name: Second Wind Sponsor: RockTenn Trivia: Mike is a firefighter from Akron, Ohio and his first flight was in 1971. He holds three US National and two World Records for Distance in a hot air balloon. Mike was the top competitive pilot in Ohio in 2010. He has developed some great friendships in Coshocton with his local crew. His wife, Rozanne, is his fabulous crew chief and never forgets the “red cups”.
Pilot # 3 Name: Jim Birk Hometown: Defiance, OH Balloon Name: Who Cares Sponsor: Big O Refuse Trivia: Jim will be the Event Director for the US Nationals in Longview, TX later this summer. He directs events around the country and competes in selected events over the summer. Jim is a retired corporate balloon pilot having flown Pepe and the Kroger’s balloon for many years. Pilot # 5 Name: Ken Cramer Hometown: Coshocton, OH Balloon Name: Free For All Trivia: Ken has been flying since 1992 and continues to fly the prettiest area…..Coshocton County. He still thinks the most flying fun is giving someone their first balloon flight. The role he likes best these days is the one of “Gramps”. He finds great joy in playing with his grandchildren, Ethan, Leah, and Jamie. Ken is retired and is too busy to find a parttime job. Pilot # 6 Name: Jim Cusick Hometown: Marysville, OH Balloon Name: Bolt Sponsor: Central Ohio Technical College – Coshocton Campus Trivia: Jim has been a pilot since 2004 after years of crewing and learning about ballooning from his father, Rick. Bolt is Jim’s third balloon and the unique design was created when he was 11 years old. Jim is the Vice President of the Central Ohio Balloon Club and flies in events throughout the Midwest. Jim is married to his crew chief, Laura, and enjoys sharing ballooning with their son, Ben.

Pilot # 11 Name: Alex Jonard Hometown: St. Charles, IL Balloon Name: Cra-Zee Sponsor: Coshocton Tribune Media Trivia: Alex grew up in West Lafayette and still has lots of family in Coshocton County. He is the materials manager at Banner Service Corp. in Carol Stream, IL. Alex started his ballooning career as an observer at the Coshocton event in 1985 and got his pilot’s license in 1987. It is a family affair for the Jonard’s as his wife, Monica, and sons, Alex T. and Nick are his crew. Their balloon is a tribute to Professor Zee, Bob Zanella, who passed away in 2010. The “Z” on the parachute top reminds them that he will also be there as they fly. Rob sells model trains, collectibles, and toys during the off season. He has missed only one event at Coshocton in over two decades. They are joined in Coshocton by their grandson, James. Pilot # 16 Name: Ben Miller Hometown: Canfield, OH Balloon Name: Littlest Angel Sponsor: Coshocton Village Inn and Suites Trivia: Ben has been flying for five years. He teaches high school art and photography. His most memorable flight took place at the Coshocton Balloon Festival in 2008 when he landed on top of a hill side in a large patch of poison ivy. He is married to Megan who is unable to be with him this weekend and is sorely missed.
Pilot # 22 Name: Ted Watts Hometown: Meadville, PA Balloon Name: The Legal Eagle Sponsor: Frontier Power, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative Trivia: Ted is an attorney in Meadville, thus the name of the balloon. He was taught how to fly by his dear friend, the late Bob Zanella. In his memory, he has installed a Z in the parachute of his balloon. Ted loves flying here as the terrain is challenging and reminds him of his home in Pennsylvania. Ted particularly likes the good friends that he has made since he started coming here. Last year, he served as the safety officer for the BFA National Championships in Battle Creek. Pilot # 23 Name: Debby Young Hometown: Newbury, OH Balloon Name: Airgasm Sponsor: Jeff Drennen Dealerships Trivia: Debby is retired and spends most of the year traveling anywhere that looks like fun, only returning to Ohio for flying season. She earned the AX5 Feminine World Records for Distance and Duration for a flight she made in February 2001. She flew a distance of 181 miles and was in the air for 9.5 hours.

After his first ride, he was hooked. Soc’s father, John Rettos, served for many years as the Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival chairman and is now helping Soc as crew. The balloon is named for the “hot flash” of pink in its color scheme.
Pilot # 21 Name: Wayne Warren Hometown: Waterford, MI Balloon Name: Junior Sponsor: WalMart Superstore Trivia: Wayne started flying in 1973 and has flown at every balloon event at Coshocton except the first. His nick-name, The Mad Bomber, is a perfect description of Wayne dropping in on a target. Wayne served as the balloonmeister for the Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival several times and always flies well here. He is joined by his crew chief, Linda, and his loyal crew, John and Sherry.

Pilot # 17 Name: Greg Miller Hometown: Brunswick Hills, OH Balloon Name: Eclipse Sponsor: Jones Metal/Jones Zylon Trivia: Greg works at the Lubrizol Corporation as a database administrator. Greg’s favorite flight was his first flight after getting his license when he could take his wife, Sherry, and son, Michael, along for a ride. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking.
Pilot # 20 Name: Gary Tyo Hometown: Mt. Gilead, OH Balloon Name: CarMaKiDrew Sponsor: AAA of Ohio Trivia: Gary has been flying for almost 30 years and is a retired locomotive engineer from New Jersey Transit. He also practiced law and taught school. Gary and his wife, Kim, named their balloon with the first syllables of their four grandchildren’s names. No doubt some of those grandkids will be crewing this year.

Pilot # 14 Name: Tim Midura Hometown: Marshallville, OH Balloon Name: Kismet II Sponsor: Buckeye Brine Trivia: Tim has been a pilot since 1979 and flew the first balloon in Costa Rica. He is a physician’s assistant at Coshocton Memorial Hospital’s ER and enjoys having a weekend without being on-call. Tim’s wife, Missy, is also a balloon pilot though she will be driving the truck this weekend.
Pilot # 19 Name: Maury Sullivan Hometown: Canton, OH Balloon Name: Road Trip Sponsor: Edward Jones Investments – Mike Remington Trivia: “The Big Taco” was finally approved for social security! Maury is the owner of Kozmo’s in Massillon and Pancho’s Southwestern Grill in Green, but he doesn’t have an income from them if the government is checking. He will be providing weather information to the pilots this weekend. Maury’s interest in ballooning started in 1981 and he has now logged over 750 hours in hot air balloons.
