invited to guess what each antique was used for. Paper will be available near the display to write down answers. At the end of the fair, participants with the most number of correct answers will be drawn from a box and the winner will receive a prize to be determined later. In addition to the game, members from the woodcarvers, quilt clubs, and the Pomerene Center for the Arts will be in the Art Hall giving demonstrations. Buxton said the Art Hall has expanded over the years. The back room, which is now where they display the photograph entries, used to be a theatre and members of the Footlight Players would present plays there during the fair. Also, the cabinets used to display the antiques and other items were not original to the Art Hall, and are probably considered antiques themselves. They were donated by the staff of the former Buckeye Clothing Store on Main Street in Coshocton. During the winter months, the Art Hall is used for storage. Buxton said that a lot of the items in the Art Hall showcase both family and Coshocton County history. “A lot of it is family history,” he said. “Grandmas are making quilts for their grandchildren, so you will probably see them back in about 25 years. It’s the pride in the community that they want to display their talents with baking and quilt making. It’s neat to see what everyone collects.” Judging at the Art Hall will be Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Thursday, Sept. 27 and it will open for public viewing on Friday, Sept. 28. “I hope people come out to the fair and see all of our entries at the Art Hall because there’ll be several thousand,” said Buxton. The Art Hall at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds has undergone a couple of major changes for the fair this year. According to Bob Buxton, Superintendent of the Home Arts Department, parts of the building have been remodeled to make it easier to view exhibits and easier for the staff to display the exhibits. One of the major changes involves the photography display. Each photograph submitted to the Art Hall this year will be mounted on a foam background that will fit into wooden slots that have been added to the back room of the Hall. This will make it easier for staff members to display the photographs, as they will no longer have to staple and hang each photograph on the wall. Another major change is that the old divisions in the walls have been torn down and are being replaced with cattle panels. This will allow for better lighting on each of the exhibits. The Art Hall has always been a popular stop for Coshocton County residents and people from other counties who come to enjoy the fair. “It’s a very popular department to enter,” said Buxton. “We have entries from children, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and when you have that many entries, everyone comes to see displays from their family, but we have a lot of people come from out of the county.” The Art Hall features a variety of exhibits including painting, photography, sewing, collections, antiques, baked goods, needlework, quilts, woodcarvings, canned goods, decorated gourds, homemade wine making, and others. The Coshocton Fair also features the largest quilt display than in any other Ohio county fairs. “I’ve been to about 15 fairs this summer, and I get a lot of ideas from other county fairs,” said Buxton. One idea he will bring to the Coshocton Fair this year is a game called, ‘Stump the Judge’. A few of the antique items that will be on display will be in a separate case, each with its own number. Judges and the public are

The fair board used to try to have two nights of musical entertainment, but an increase in costs has prevented them from doing that. “Garth Brooks was here once (early in his career) for around $10,000, but nowadays even the up and coming stars who have not had a number one or maybe only had one want at least $20,000,” Adams said. “They’ve priced themselves right out of the small community fair business. We used to be able to do two nights for that price. We know people like motor sports or something with a motor in it so we filled the extra night with that.” One of the fair’s newer grandstand events is the ATV Rodeo. “We run it like you would horses around barrels and poles,” Adams said. “Last year we had a good showing and Guernsey County did one this year so we expect to get a following from them.” Adams likes the event because it goes on rain or shine and the fair board can run it. “We don’t have to sign a contract with an outside promoter,” he said. “The fair board members can do it.” All of the grandstand events are included with your $8 admission fee to the fair. This year there also is no cost for track seating during the Sunday night concerts. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Chris Higbee may look a little familiar to some attendees of the fair. “He was here with the Povertyneck Hillbillies,” said Rodney Adams, who cochairs the fair’s entertainment committee with Jim McClure. “They broke up and he got his wife and some band members together, took vocal lessons and then went out on his own.” Adams believes those who come to the 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, concert at the grandstand will be impressed with Higbee’s fiddle playing. “In my opinion there isn’t another fiddler like him,” Adams said. “He’s also easy to work with.” Opening up for Higbee will be Double Cut who takes the stage at 6 p.m. They are a younger group from the Adams Mills and Dresden area. “They play country and maybe a little rock,” Adams said. “They do a heck of a job and have a big following in Muskingum and surrounding counties.” Other events planned for the grandstand at this year’s Coshocton County fair include: OSTPA Truck and Tractor Pull at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28; A-BAR Rodeo’s Bull Mania at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29; ATV Rodeo at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1; Open Truck and Tractor Pull at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2; Rough Truck Contest at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3; and Moto Cross Racing at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4.

Events

Once again numerous teams from Relay For Life of Coshocton County will have themed baskets at the fair in the small Commercial Arts Building from Friday, Sept 28 thru Thursday, Oct. 4. The public is invited to stop by the booth and bid on these beautiful, inspiring baskets. The evening of Wednesday, Oct. 3 may even find a bidding frenzy happening by our many supporters. Some of the teams entering baskets this year are: Home Loan and Savings, Team Alana, Flagmakers, and Family Matters. One of the themed baskets is actually a high-heel shoe chair with a storage compartment. This compartment will contain dress-up items for the little diva in our life. Also during the fair, team members will be manning the booth and available to help with any questions you may have. Questions such as: How can I have a team, what is the goal for Coshocton County, can cancer survivors attend the event?

COME VISIT US AT THE FAIR, LOCATED BETWEEN HUNTER ARENA & THE BEEF BARN FOR YOUR SHOW SUPPLIES, FEED, AND BEDDING!

As in past years during the county fair, the city will return Kenilworth Avenue, between Seventh and Eighth streets, to one-way traffic beginning Monday, Sept. 24 through Thursday, Oct. 4. Traffic may only travel east on Kenilworth between Seventh and Eighth during that time period. “NO PARKING” signs will be erected to prohibit parking on that section of Kenilworth during the actual fair dates of Sept. 28 through Oct. 4. This no-parking ban is to ease the flow of traffic of the big trucks hauling tractors, entertainment crews, etc., as they negotiate Kenilworth Avenue and make the turn into the Eighth Street gate at the fairgrounds. Traffic going north on Seventh Street from Bank Street or Otsego Avenue will not be allowed to go through to the main fair entrance. Traffic will be detoured west on Ash Street during the week of the fair.
