COSHOCTON – Get your home and garden ready for warmer weather during the fifth annual Coshocton County Home and Lifestyle Show which will be at the Coshocton County Career Center Saturday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 9 from noon to 4 p.m.

“It’s a major fundraiser for Habitat,” said Linda Miller, volunteer at Habitat and coordinator of the event. “It’s one of two. In the spring, we have the Home Show, and in the summer, we have the golf outing. It’s also something it seemed like the community needed.”

There will be approximately 35 vendors at this year’s show. Types of vendors range anywhere from landscaping, insurance, massage, jewelry, candles, and interior design to cooking, home improvement, tools, and environmental.

“I think it’s a success because it’s a good variety of vendors and just the hospitality from Habitat and the welcoming you get when you come through the door,” said Miller. “People also enjoy the demos we have on different topics that get you in the mood for spring.”

The show also allows residents to view what is available locally in the county for their home improvement needs.

“It also allows us to partner with other businesses in the community and to get their name out there as well,” said Brittleigh Smith, executive director of Coshocton County Habitat for Humanity.

Saturday begins with breakfast at 9 a.m. provided by Mike Cichon and his culinary students and will be served until noon. Cichon and the students will also provide lunch and will serve from noon to 4 p.m.

This demo leads into Rachel Hall’s presentation at 11:30 a.m. on How to Taste Wines. The demonstrations conclude at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Darr’s Field Dog Retrieving presentation.

Sunday begins at noon with lunch provided by The Depot in Dresden and will be served until 4 p.m. Connie Miller will be speaking at 1:30 p.m. about Easy Planting, Easy Maintenance. The day will conclude with a raffle drawing at 3:30 p.m.

The grand prize for the raffle is valued at over $900 and is a grill and meat package. The second prize is valued at $250 and includes a one-night stay at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites with breakfast, a gift card from Oscar Rose Steak n’ Stein, and a round of golf for two at River Greens Golf Course. The third prize is a $50 gift card from Kobel’s and a lap quilt made by Suzann Stoker. Tickets for the raffle are $1 for one and $5 for 10.

“We just want people to come out and enjoy the show,” said Miller.

“It’s time to get ready for spring and knock the dust off and get ready for planting season. It’s also meant to be an outreach to the community to show them what’s in their own area and helping Habitat to continue to help families in need of affordable housing.”

Admission to the show is free, but donations to Habitat are appreciated.

“I’m hoping people will take away a little bit more, not only about Habitat, but what we intend to do with the future and what we do here in the community,” said Smith.

Third annual women build project set

COSHOCTON – The third annual Women Build event is coming up!

This year’s Women Build project will be to construct a storage shed for Habitat’s new ReStore location. The cost to participate is $25 a person, which includes a t-shirt and snack. We encourage volunteers of all skill levels to participate. You must be 18 or over to volunteer.

There will be a Women Build booth at our Home & Lifestyle Show where interested women can sign up and learn more information. COSHOCTON - The Women Build Committee, a part of Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton County, has created a new program called Girls Build to allow girls age 12-18 the opportunity to participate in a building project. During our previous Women Build, we became aware of girls under the age of 18 who were interested in building; however, our insurance prohibits minors from participating if power tools are being utilized.

This motivated us to create the playhouse project where girls could learn basic building skills, enhance their teamwork abilities, and contribute to Habitat’s mission by assembling playhouses for a silent auction.

The materials for this project will be cut to size by the female students in the building trades class at the Career Center. The girls in the playhouse project will then assemble the 4’ x 5’ playhouses using hammers and cordless screw guns. They will also paint the playhouses using their own creativity. This project will promote the values of commitment and teamwork, as well as provide a sense of accomplishment and community involvement.

A member of the committee makes sure the family attends and completes nutrition, finance, and homeownership classes, puts in at least 300 sweat equity hours, and has their $450 down payment paid prior to taking possession of their new home. Special Events makes possible our signature events, the Home and Lifestyle Show and the annual golf outing. These are our most successful fund raising events, but it takes a lot of people to make these events the successes they have become. The more the merrier!

Church Relations works with the churches in the county to strengthen the bond with Habitat, which is a Christian faith-based organization.

Financial Development is right now in its beginning stages. The committee will be responsible for the long-term sustainability of the affiliate.

it easier to handle put your documents in a box. There is no limit. It will be shredded on site before you leave the parking lot. The paper will then be recycled into secondary products such as paper towels and tissue.

The Coshocton ReStore is also sponsoring electronic recycling at the same time. Old cell phones, computers, printers, ink cartridges and recyclable batteries can be disposed of and recycled. Old televisions cannot be accepted at this event. For questions about what can be recycled, contact Habitat at 623-2764.

Assisting with the collection will be Coshocton County REACT. These volunteers will control the traffic flow for the recycling event and their help is gratefully appreciated.

COSHOCTON - Habitat’s home improvement store opened for business to the public in its current location up from Coshocton Lumber on March 27, 2010.

For those “do-it-yourselfers” and treasure hunters looking for a great deal, the store has a variety of merchandise from used and new household items, building materials, furniture as well as appliances. Proceeds from the sale of merchandise are used to help in the building of more homes.

The ReStore has also kept more than 60 tons of good used materials out of the landfill.

In January, Habitat purchased the former Gator’s Pub and is preparing to move the ReStore to the new location at 84 Pine St. behind the Downtowner Plaza. Jason Pope, the store’s manager and our volunteers are working diligently to get the building remodeled for the move in April.

The Restore’s new location will allow for more display space of larger items and allow Habitat room for expansion in the future. With the location just off Second Street, the store will be more centrally located for shoppers. The donation drop off area will make it easier for accepting donations as well.

The ReStore is opened from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The move is planned on days the store will be closed so business will not be interrupted.

The ReStore would also like to expand on the recycling of printer cartridges, rechargeable batteries, cell phones and aluminum cans. These items can be dropped off at the store during business hours.

We are so thankful to our wonderful volunteers who give of their time throughout the year in construction, committee work as well as other aspects to make this organization successful! They truly do give from the heart!

COSHOCTON - What’s Habitat been up to over the past year?

Ground breaking for our veteran build began in the spring of 2013 with great enthusiasm from our volunteers. The recipient family of our veteran home was Grant and Kathy Ford and their three children.

This was the second year the women who participated in Women Build were able to frame a house during National Women Build Week held the week of Mother’s Day with excitement to be working on the veteran build. The house was built at 717 S. Gay St. in West Lafayette, and the dedication was held on Dec. 14, 2013, with many supporters present for the celebration and to tour the home. The Fords moved in the following week.

As the new school year commenced, Habitat again teamed up with the Coshocton County Career Center’s building trades class to frame house number 14 located at 303 N. 15th St. in Coshocton. The Aaron and Amber Allnutt family are eagerly awaiting completion of their home in late spring. There will soon be many opportunities for volunteers wanting to learn or utilize their construction skills to help others. You don’t have to be skilled to volunteer on a Habitat job site.

Habitat homes are built on full basements with poured walls. Many of the skilled components of the build are hired out unless we have a volunteer who has certification in a specific field such as plumbing or electrical. The balance of the house is built by volunteers wanting to give back to their community as well as the partner family fulfilling their sweat equity requirements.

Dr. Cathrine Darr opened her veterinary practice in 1975 after graduation from The Ohio State University. She moved to her present location eight years ago. The hospital was built two years prior by Dr. Stout another veterinarian. The office presently operates from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. It is a full service medical and surgical facility with one full time and one part time veterinarian and another full time to be added. There is also a support staff of six veterinary technicians.

Deb Gaumer, a local well known avid gardener, loves working with the soil and seeing things grow. Because of this she has been co owner of the Garden Patch Greenhouse for the last 14 years. In addition, she also puts in many long hours on the farm her family owns.

When she does have a free moment you will find her involved in many activities in Coshocton County. This is all done with a strong passion, to make the county a better place to live. One of the activities is helping to maintain the baskets hanging in the downtown area throughout the summer. Last year was also her first year as Superintendent of the Agriculture Hall at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. This is something she is deeply involved in and would like to encourage more participation at the fair.

Recently, more local people have started their own vineyards to make wines or sell to local wineries. At 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, Deb will speak on growing and pruning grape vines.

The Animal Boutique and Villas are an extension of the hospital, which came about three years ago. More space was needed to board and groom animals. Now they can board dogs or cats up to 60 days. The facility also has do it yourself bathing stations and a training center with classes for obedience, rally and agility.

It was about 10 years ago Dr. Darr purchased her first pet Cavalier and became interested in the competition of obedience and conformation showing. One of her dogs has trained to the utility dog title and four others are at various levels of obedience training. She also has two Golden Retrievers currently being trained for hunt test competition. She has also put champion titles on a dozen conformation Cavaliers. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, you will see a Cavalier show us how obedient our dog should be. Again at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting, her field dogs will demonstrate retrieving. Be sure to stop by to enjoy the show.

Manager of Shawnee Springs Winery, Rachel Hall, has been learning what it takes to run a winery for the past two years. She is involved in all aspects of the winery and wears many hats.

A country girl at heart, Rachel grew up outside of Plainfield and attended school at Ridgewood. Her communications degree from Muskingum College is helpful when it comes to marketing and experience, as a bar tender is useful in the tasting room. Rachel is also a teacher at the Montessori Preschool of Coshocton and a vendor/board member at Local Bounty Coshocton.

Make sure you are there to see Rachel show us all how to taste wine at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8.

Connie Miller 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9 Easy Planting – Easy Maintenance Connie Miller comes from a farming background both on her mother and father’s side. So, working with the soil was a natural thing to do. She has a degree from The Ohio State University in landscape horticulture, and has lived in Coshocton County since 1978.

COSHOCTON - The grand prize this year is a meat and grill package valued at over $900. The grill comes from Auer Hardware and the meat from the West Lafayette Village Market. You can purchase a ticket for this great prize at the Village Market or from any Habitat for Humanity of Coshocton board member and at the Home and Lifestyle Show.

The first ticket drawn at the end of the show will be for the grand prize meat and grill package. The second ticket’s owner will receive a very nice getaway package. This includes a one night stay at the Village Inn and Suites plus a $40 gift card from Oscar Rose and play for two from River Greens Golf course. This is valued at over $200. The third ticket is for a $50 gift card from Kobel’s Landscaping and a lap quilt donated by Suzann Stoker of Coshocton.

Tickets for these great raffle prizes are $1 each or 10 for $5. Again they can be purchased from any Habitat for Humanity board member or the Village Market in West Lafayette and at the Home and Lifestyle Show.

COSHOCTON - If you were here for breakfast last year, you know it was a hit. This year it will be back again from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 8.

Preparing the breakfast this year will be Mike Cichon, the Career Center Culinary Arts instructor, and his students. They will be serving a traditional breakfast of eggs, pancakes, sausage and biscuit, a prepared meat and fruit.

The cost will range from $3 to $6 and proceeds will go to the culinary department.

At noon on Saturday the restaurant will switch to a lunch menu that will consist of soups, salads and sandwiches. The culinary students at the Career Center will also be preparing the lunch. The cost of lunch will be between $3 and $8 with proceeds benefiting them.

From noon to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, Spragg Enterprises of Dresden will be serving a delicious lunch that will range from $5 to $7.

You may have already visited their restaurant, The Depot, in Dresden or had one of their tasty meals at the Airport Café in Coshocton last year.

They will be serving pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken sandwiches, cheesy potatoes and a dessert. Make a point to come out and enjoy the show and have a tasty lunch. The admission and parking are free.

Many may remember first knowing Connie at Kobel’s Garden Center.

She worked there until 1991 and returned to school for a degree in elementary education and taught for the next five years. It was in 2000 a full time position became available in landscaping at Roscoe Village and she has had her hands in the soil ever since. The thousands of visitors who walk the streets of Roscoe Village each year see her love for the plants.
