or early March to inform the public about the ongoing study of Mohawk Dam. The commissioners also met with Steve Lonsinger to sign a letter of support for the 2016 Coshocton Licking Fairfield Perry Solid Waste District Grant Application for the Coshocton County Health Department in the amount of $47,035.40. This is a $7,000 increase over last year. A records commission meeting was held and the commissioners approved the disposal of outdated reports, board books, minutes, handbooks, and newspaper articles from two county agencies. The next records commission meeting will be March 9. Pastor Bill Dunfee of New Beginnings Ministries also approached the commissioners about the protesters outside of his church. The commissioners informed Dunfee that they have no jurisdiction on what is going on at the church. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM NOW ACCEPTING MAJOR CREDIT CARDS

other was spillway erosion. The result of the IES study was that the organization conduct a Dam Safety Modification Study, which is a six-step process that is being conducted now. The study is to identify and recommend a risk management plan which supports the expeditious and cost effective reduction of risk within the overall portfolio of dams. The organization is also working with the River View School District on an emergency action plan in case flooding would occur. The study also has the geologists look 50 years into the future to determine how the changes they make now to the structure, if any, will affect the structure and surrounding areas 50 years from now. Will the methods they use today still be as effective in 50 years? What is likely to happen in the next 50 years to increase or decrease risks at the Mohawk Dam? The organization not only examines the Mohawk Dam, but the 21,000 acres surrounding it from Tuscarawas County to Dresden. They also asked the commissioners the chances of current cropland in floodplain areas one day being used as residential or industrial space. Dorothy Skowrunski of the Port Authority was present and said there is a great potential that industries may be moving into the cropland area within the next 50 years. A public meeting will be held in late February

COSHOCTON - The commissioners met on Wednesday, Sept. 23 with the US Army Corps of Engineers to discuss an ongoing study of the Mohawk Dam. There is no immediate danger with the structure. The dam was just the next on the list of area dams to be evaluated. The organization is trained to look for weaknesses in the dams and intervene before they become major problems for the surrounding areas. The Mohawk Dam was built in the 1930s and has a capacity to hold 93 billion gallons of water. The structure has a history of seepage, but that is common. Although it is a dry dam, it has had various pool events throughout its life, the highest being in 2005 when it was within 10 feet of its spillway. In 2005, the dam received a Dam Safety Action Classification rank of two out of five, which ranked the structure as a high urgency of action. At that time, the organization identified three areas of the dam that needed immediate attention, and those issues were resolved. In 2011, the dam experienced another notably high pool event, although not as high as in 2005. In 2014, the organization began an Issue Evaluation Study, which is to evaluate a dam’s safety issue found during an incident, inspection, or study to determine if it warrants further actions. The IES identified four potential failure modes, three of which dealt with internal erosion. The

River View School District LETTER TO THE EDITOR

DALTON SUMMERS

To The Editor, A few weeks ago, we opened our doors to our bright and smiling students for the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, and we couldn’t be happier to have everybody back. As we’ve discussed, we have a lot to do in the coming year to solidify the future of River View Schools, and it is important to us to keep you informed every step of the way. To that end, I wanted to take a brief moment to share with you what we have done, and what you’ll start to see in the coming weeks. As many have noticed, we’ve dramatically ramped up our social media activity, particularly on Facebook. It is a great way for us to communicate with our residents in real-time and share the story of our schools. Many of you recently saw our picture on Facebook of a thermometer from inside a second grade classroom at Keene Elementary. After lunch one day, that thermometer read 94 degrees! The only way we could keep students cool was to spray them lightly with water bottles. You’re also going to be seeing more of our school leaders. River View is a big school district, and not everybody has to time to come to the administration office when they have questions. In the coming weeks, members of our Board of Education and our top administrators will be visiting various clubs and community groups throughout the district to provide updates on what is going on at River View School. If you’d like a speaker from River View Schools to attend the next meeting of your club, please contact the Board office at 740-824-3760, send us a direct message on Facebook, or e-mail my Secretary, Renee Anderson, at renee. anderson@rvbears.org. This level of engagement and activity is important to us. Our schools are facing some very serious issues. We have an important renewal levy on the ballot this November that WILL NOT RAISE TAXES, but will keep us operating so we can continue to provide the quality services and programs our community expects. In the near future, we will also have to address our failing school facilities. These issues aren’t going to go away. If we are going to solve them, we’ll need the help and support of our entire community. You’ll be hearing from us again soon. In the meantime, you can find us on Facebook for up-to-date news and information, or you can call my office directly with any questions you may have at 740-824-3521. Regards, Dalton Summers Superintendent

COSHOCTON – The Footlight Players generally don’t precast plays, but when Susan Metz picked “Love Letters” to start this season, she knew Jim and Bettsy Gauerke were the perfect people for the production. “I was so pleased when I called and they accepted,” said Metz, who is directing “Love Letters.” The play, written by A.R. Gurney, focuses on letters written between Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, who were both born to wealth and position. They are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank you notes and summer camp postcards and continues through the following 50 years. The letters exchanged and shared with the audience chronicle their lives, the joys, the sorrows, the complexities, in the ever-changing kaleidoscope of life. “In the play the actors come out together and read the series of letters,” Metz said. “It’s been done by many, many different couples and been on Broadway at least three times that I’m aware

of. It made me think of Jim and Bettsy.” The Gauerkes were honored that she thought of them. “I was very flattered and thrilled,” Bettsy said. Jim added that saying yes was an easy decision. “I didn’t have to think more than two seconds about it,” he said. Their roles also are a way for the Footlight Players to pay tribute to Jim and Bettsy’s 60 years of involvement with the theater group. “We’ve worked together on several plays and directing them is an awesome experience,” Metz said. “Both of them have been in over 100 productions each in one way or another.” Both Jim and Bettsy said being part of the theater is fun. “I enjoy doing different parts and playing different people and ages,” Jim said. “It’s also a thrill when the audience appreciates what you do.” “Love Letters” will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, at Triple Locks Theater, 685 N. Whitewoman St. “This play really grabs you,” Bettsy said. “It’s funny, but also kind of heartbreaking. It has a little bit of everything.” Tickets for “Love Letters” are $12 for adults and $7 for students. They can be ordered online at www.footlightplayers.com or by calling 740-

622-2959 from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 2 to 4 p.m. on performance days. Those who attend the play also will have the opportunity to win a bracelet from corporate sponsor Dean’s Jewelry. The bracelet will be on display in the green room and a donation will give you the chance to win it. The winner will be drawn after the final show on Saturday, Oct. 24. All proceeds will be donated to Hopewell School in Jim and Bettsy’s honor in memory of their son Jimmy. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Tourism meeting highlights local activities

0030_101409

COSHOCTON – Tourism was alive and well this summer in Coshocton County. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the Coshocton Visitors Bureau had 6,713 visits to its store in Roscoe Village. Those guests to our town represented many different places including 14 different countries and 35 different states. “They were from places you wouldn’t expect like Taiwan and Argentina,” said Mindy Brems, who works for the CVB. “Some of them (the visitors) don’t even speak English and they were here riding the canal boat.” She shared these numbers on Sept. 23, with attendees of the Coshocton Tourism Partner Meeting. The meeting was held at Colonial Campground on County Road 10, which has activities planned to help make fall another great tourism season for the county. “We bought 23 additional acres this spring and some of it was woods and some was cropland that we decided to turn into a corn maze,” said Ryan McPeek, owner. “It should be a lot of fun.

ELKS 2016 LOTTERY CALENDARS AVAILABLE It’s that time of year; time to think about purchasing a winning calendar.

M os

Here’s how it works: each pocket calendar has a unique 4-digit number. If that number is pulled in the Pick 4 either midday or evening, you win! Weekdays it’s $50 twice a day and weekends it’s $100 twice a day. There are 10 holidays where the 2 drawings are worth $500. (No drawing on Christmas). That’s 728 chances to win for only $20! And the beauty part is that if you win, all you have to do is sit back and wait for a check from the Ohio Elks Association. Additionally, the lodge gets $5 from each calendar sold to use for youth, drug awareness or veterans programs.

COSHOCTON – It’s been a long process, but Coshocton Grain Co. is ready to start serving customers again on Thursday, Oct. 1. “We are so thankful for all our well wishers and everyone’s patience,” said Rhoda Crown, CEO of Coshocton Grain. “We are very grateful for our customer base and the community we live and work in.” Coshocton Grain spent the past year rebuilding after an explosion that occurred in August 2014. Forensic engineers proved that the explosion was an accident and that regular maintenance was being done by employees, but Coshocton Grain had to wait on insurance payments before they could start rebuilding. “Rebuilding didn’t start as soon as we wanted it to because we had to wait on insurance to approve our plans,” Crown said. While they were waiting to get up and running, she made sure her employees and customers were taken care of. “All of our employees maintained their benefits and wages throughout this difficult process,” Crown said. “They took turns going down to our Hebron facility and did some work around here and the office employees continued to work full time.” She also noted that Coshocton Grain paid mileage for customers who had contracts with them to deliver their grain to another facility. Construction started at the beginning of June and was done by Custom Agri Builders from Washington, Ind. and the electrical work was completed by Custom Agri Systems from

Napoleon. Prior to them being on site, demolition of damaged structures was completed by Eslich Wrecking Company from Louisville. “We are very pleased with the construction,” Crown said. “They did a phenomenal job. Completing a project of this size in this short of a time is amazing.” She also is excited about changes that were made with the rebuild. “Our two pits together will dump 35,000 bushels an hour and we will load out grain at 30,000 bushels an hour,” Crown said. “The traffic pattern also changed for easier in and out access to the facility.” Another change that will occur is that Coshocton Grain will now operate in cooperation with Interstate Commodities Incorporated. However, the current shareholders of Coshocton Grain will still own the local facility and the Hebron one and maintain ownership of the elevators in Illinois. Coshocton Grain’s staff and Crown will continue with the company. “Our employees are ready to get back to work,” Crown said. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

OCTOBER 3RD, 1955 With the opening of the Coshocton County Fair only two days away, more than 800 teens and young adults were finalizing projects and anxiously awaiting the fair in what was the largest number of county youth participating in the Junior Fair in the county’s history. The Junior Fair had been growing each year and John McCabe and Loweli Mizer, superintendents of the Junior Fair, hoped that this year would be the best by far. The more than 800 young participants were members of the 55 4-H Clubs and FFA programs. All boys and girls must exhibit projects carried in the 4-H program during the current year and certified by the advisor and extension agent in charge. SEPTEMBER 30TH, 1965 The City-County Recreation Board recognized Mrs. Wharton for her service to the Coshocton City Recreation Program with a trophy at a dinner meeting at the L Grill. Jerome Stenner, president of the board, presented Mrs. Wharton with the trophy, which was a tribute to the many years she assisted her husband Sky when he directed the program. Mrs. Wharton was also a full-time school teacher and active in clinic and church affairs. C.M. Ross, Coshocton County probate and juvenile judge, was guest speaker and said that the recreation program was a necessity to the young people of the community and helped them develop healthy relationships with one another and the community. OCTOBER 5TH, 1975 The annual CROP walk was scheduled for October 19 and walkers were already out asking for sponsors who pledged money based on how many miles walked. After the event, proof of their miles walked was shown to their sponsors and the promised amount of money was then collected. All monies were then turned over to Church World Services who used it for CROP projects to send food, seeds, tools, and other aids to fight hunger in more than 30 countries. The previous year, 80 walkers participated with an average of 15 sponsors per walker. $3,000 was raised and $3,300 was raised the first year of the walk in 1972. SEPTEMBER 30TH, 1985 Tom Scheaffer of Warsaw had a very important job at the Coshocton Fair. He was one of the night watchmen who kept an eye on the fairgrounds after the gates were closed. He usually arrived at the Agricultural Building by 4 p.m. and stayed until morning. After the crowds left, Scheaffer kept himself busy by cleaning up after other people, and during the day, he kept watch over the exhibits to make sure they were left untouched. He estimated that there was several thousand dollars’ worth of exhibits in the AG Hall, although the building was locked at night with guards patrolling the grounds outside. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON – At 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, the Coshocton County Senior Center will host an evening of excitement, Bluegrass music, awesome door prizes, 50/50 drawing, great food and amazing desserts. The Stockdale Brothers will be featured at the October evening meal. The brothers, Jacob & James, often spend kitchen and farm chore time together singing their favorite songs and honing their harmonies. Together they perform Bluegrass and Appalachian music about faith, family and farm life with comedy for good measure. The duet often switches out on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and bass. Jacob is an Ohio State Grand Fiddle Champion. The Stockdale Brothers are especially suited for stage performance, as their affection for people and enthusiasm for traditional acoustic music is infectious to audiences. During the evening meal, six fantastic door prizes from San Cast, Triplett Pharmacy & Gifts, and Wilson Carpet & Furniture will be given away. There also will be a 50/50 drawing...so there are lots of chances to win big. Desserts will be offered by Primrose Retirement Community. PROJECT River View High School physics, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, and some upper level art students are embarking on a school to real life project with embedded artist Tony Bible. The partnership with the Pomerene Arts Center as well as local manufacturing facilities including Jones Metal, Crozier Welding, and Coshocton Industries presents the students the opportunity to idealize, design, and build a structure for the artPark on Main Street in Coshocton. This roller coaster fountain project encompasses learning at a deep level where students are given the chance to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to a real life situation. As a kickoff event, the group of 28 students, four staff members, embedded artist Tony Bible and Anne Cornell, Pomerene Arts Center, enjoyed touring the manufacturing facilities in the county. For the third consecutive year, library cards were distributed to students at no cost and their accounts at the library and online had previously been set up. Approximately 90 cards were distributed and more than 90 percent of the eighth grade class participated in the program. Students can now go online and download e-books, choosing from more than 66,000 titles. This program is more important than ever because the school no longer has an in-house library. CLOSING The Front Porch has been open for business for approximately five to six years in downtown Coshocton. However, due to new regulations by the Department of Medicare and Medicaid involving individuals who receive home and community waivers, the store will be closing its doors on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The new rules state that employed individuals who receive the waivers must work with other members of the community and not work in a locally-owned business. The Front Porch store will still be open in Hartville and will still participate at the Berlin Flea Market. The local facilities are not closing and the workshop for these individuals will change, but will still be open. BEACON PHOTO BY BETH SCOTT

Following an explosion on Aug. 13, 2014, construction on the new elevator began in early June of 2015. The CGC shareholders approved the relationship with ICI for Browns Lane as well as for their Hebron location. ICI will operate the facilities while the CGC shareholders will retain ownership of the assets. The staff at Coshocton will continue to be employed in their respective positions. Rhoda Sue Crown, CEO of CGC and Paul Zysset, VP of Grain Trading for ICI are very excited to begin this new endeavor to provide a viable, competitive market for the area producers’ grain. This cooperative effort showcases the long standing tradition of CGC’s local service to the area producers. Combined with the strength of ICI’s domestic and international marketing capabilities, this agreement will be beneficial to both companies and the community. Coshocton Grain Company is a privately owned corporation with grain elevators in Ohio and Edgar County, Illinois. CGC is a country elevator handling corn and soybeans. The company began operations on Browns Lane in 1948 with the current shareholders gaining ownership in 1993. Interstate Commodities, Inc. is a third generation, family owned business that markets over 30 commodities domestically and internationally for an annual sales volume of over $2 billion. examination of the wall and discovered it was not as unsafe as people thought. “The worry was if the fire could have gone through the bricks and charred the ends of joists,” Cornell said. “They discovered that couldn’t have happened because it (the wall) was too thick. Harold really stuck his neck out for us. To overcome opinion is very difficult.” Lang Masonry Contractors Inc. in Waterford, however, did come in and grind out the old mortar, replace deteriorated bricks, replace mortar and coat the wall with a sealer. The next step in the artPARK development will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 when a Make a Difference Project will be held there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It will be like an Amish barn raising,” Cornell said. “We will have an Amish foreman there and volunteers will be putting the oak down on our wooden platform. It’s a great opportunity….to stand shoulder to shoulder and drive screws into our platform.” Hathaway Construction also will be at the site on Oct. 24 working on making furniture for the space and Cornell is hoping that some trees can be planted. “We can start doing major work on the floor of the PARK space now that we are done with the wall,” Cornell said. The target date for a ribbon cutting at the artPARK is the first of May in 2016 so it can coincide with Dogwood Festival weekend. “The idea behind this is to give people a reason to be downtown,” Cornell said. “Things happen where people congregate.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

CONTRIBUTED TO THE BEACON COSHOCTON — Jan Myers, director of the Coshocton Visitors Bureau joined other leaders of Ohio’s tourism industry in attending the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (OACVB) Annual Education Conference, Sept. 16-17 in Gahanna. OACVB President Larry Fletcher expressed his appreciation to Gahanna CVB Director Laurie Jadwin, her staff, and conference team for organizing the event. “The OACVB education conference is always one of my favorite professional development sessions of the year and the Gahanna team really raised the bar!” said Fletcher. “The event was a perfect blend of educational and networking opportunities, plus the chance to experience some of Gahanna’s diverse attractions.” During the conference, attendees learned more about working with bloggers through a panel discussion featuring Laura Kretler, Heather Rader and Betsy Decillis. Another educational presentation entitled the X + Y = Generational Marketing & Recruiting, by Ann and Al Turpin, outlined the challenges and opportunities the Millennial Generation presents for the tourism industry. Columbus restaurateur, Cameron Mitchell then addressed the group about his company’s philosophies for success. The conference also included the OACVB September Board Meeting, a great networking event at the Ohio Herb Education Center, dinner at 101 Beer Kitchen and the OACVB’s Annual Middy Awards Luncheon which recognizes excellence among member bureaus for marketing and PR efforts. MIDDY Awards are presented for destination marketing and tourism development. Monica Day, from NBC4 served as Master of Ceremonies. During the Luncheon, Day spoke about the U.S. Travel Association’s Project Time Off and the importance of leisure and travel time for Americans. “The MIDDY Award name reflects our region of the country,” said Randie Adams, chairperson of the OACVB MIDDY Awards for 2015. “Recipients are recognized for excellence in objective, results, creativity and originality. 127 entries were received in print, advertising, promotion, social media, TV/Video, website and marketing campaign categories. All entries are judged by a team of experts in the communications, advertising, public relations, publications and/or tourism fields from outside of the OACVB membership.” The Coshocton Visitors Bureau received two MIDDY awards at the conference - second place for the 2015 Coshocton Visitors Guide and a first place for the 2015 Shops of Historic Roscoe Village brochure. Convention and visitors bureaus are best described as destination marketing organizations and are responsible for travel and tourism product awareness to visitors. Many outstanding marketing projects were submitted for the annual awards competition. Being recognized for a job well-done in the promotion of travel and tourism throughout the state of Ohio is a highly valued achievement. “It is truly an honor to be recognized for our marketing efforts,” said Coshocton Visitors Bureau Director Jan Myers. “Our office has a huge job promoting all Coshocton County has to offer our visitors. We focus our efforts on attracting travelers to Coshocton - specifically to spend the night in one of our lodging facilities. This is crucial because the Visitors Bureau is funded by the collection of the lodging tax paid by the visitor. This money is what allows us to continue marketing Coshocton County attractions and events.” OACVB is statewide organization serving CVBs throughout Ohio helping them to maximize the economic impact of tourism via effective communication, cooperative marketing, industry education, legislative awareness, issue management, trend identification and professional development. To contact the Coshocton Visitors Bureau, go to www.VisitCoshocton. com, call 740-622-4877, or stop at their office at the Annin Flagmakers Showroom at 432 N. Whitewoman Street in Roscoe Village.
